Abstract:There is insufficient understanding of the spatio-temporal evolution of surface water-groundwater quality and hydraulic connection under both natural and human influences in urban river basins. To this end, this paper investigated the spatio-seasonal pattern of hydrochemical evolution and surface water-groundwater interaction in a typical urban river basin (Dahei River basin) based on isotopic and hydrochemical data of 132 water samples collected during three seasons (normal, wet and dry seasons). From the normal season to the wet season, surface water in the Dahei River basin was dominated by the impacts of evaporation and groundwater discharge processes. During this period, the precipitation and agricultural activities (canal irrigation) were frequent. Thus, groundwater was affected by irrigation infiltration of surface water and precipitation from high-altitude areas. From the wet season to the dry season, precipitation decreased and irrigation methods changed (canal irrigation → well irrigation). In this case, groundwater discharge had a stronger impact on surface water, and shallow groundwater was recharged by deep groundwater through the well irrigation. Under this hydrological pattern, the hydrochemical characteristics of surface water were mainly influenced by evaporation, human activities (agricultural irrigation and sewage treatment) and groundwater discharge. In contrast, the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater were main influenced by water-rock interactions (dissolution of evaporites and silicates, and cation exchange) and human activities. This study contributed to a better understanding of the hydrochemical and hydrological processes in urban river basins and provided a theoretical basis for the sustainable management of water resources.

Abstract:The exploitation of groundwater in arid and semi-arid areas, especially in basins where groundwater is intensively exploited, is likely to have adverse effects on the originally fragile ecological environment, which also greatly alter the hydrogeochemical evolution process. Over-abstraction of groundwater in the Haolebaoji watershed of the Ordos Basin located in the semi-arid regions has led to a series of changes in the groundwater system, which has attracted considerable attention from environmental protection organizations. However, the origin and geochemical evolution of groundwater in the Haolebaoji watershed have not been revealed. In this study, the Haolebaoji watershed is selected as the typical study area to investigate hydrogeochemical evolution under the intensive groundwater exploitation. Groundwater samples were collected and tested for major ions and stable isotopes (δ18O, δD). Various approaches including the ion proportional relationship diagram, chlor-alkali index, saturation index, Gibbs diagram, and principal factor analysis were used to reveal the hydrogeochemical processes regulating the groundwater geochemistry. The groundwater in the study area is divided into five hydrochemical types according to the Piper diagram. It was found that the chemical composition of groundwater in the study area is mainly controlled by the dissolution of calcite, dolomite, gypsum, and halite. The cation exchange intensity gradually increased with the flow of groundwater from the recharge to the discharge area. Rock weathering plays a controlling role in the formation of groundwater geochemistry, but it is also controlled by evaporative crystallization in some runoff and discharge areas. Groundwater is predominantly recharged by modern local atmospheric precipitation, and deep wells receive water supply during cold periods. The study findings provide important information for the development of sustainable groundwater management strategies for the Ordos Energy Base.

Abstract:Stable isotopes (δDVSMOW and δ18OVSMOW) and hydrochemical characteristics were analyzed to determine the groundwater and surface water characteristics of the Taizi River Basin in Northeast China. Total dissolved solids and major ion concentrations gradually increase along the Taizi River, and only parts of the middle and lower reaches were slightly reduced by replenishment from the Hun River and the tributaries of the eastern mountainous areas. The hydrochemical evolution of the surface water and groundwater may be due to a combination of mineral dissolution, mixing processes, cation exchange, and evaporation along the groundwater flow path. The geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the waters suggest that the surface water from the piedmont recharges the groundwater through faults and that precipitation near the mountain reservoirs contributes immensely to both water types. Lateral groundwater movement from the piedmont may be an effective source for replenishing river water in the middle and lower reaches. The geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the groundwater and surface water interaction in the Taizi River Basin contribute toward their comprehensive management.

Abstract:Intense anthropogenic activities in a karst area will inevitably change the regional groundwater environment and affect the characteristics of the karst groundwater, such as the hydrochemistry and water quality. It is of great importance to study the evolution characteristics of the hydrochemistry and water quality of karst groundwater under intense anthropogenic activities to ensure the stability and sustainable development of karst ecosystems. In this study, a representative synclinal basin-type karst groundwater system in northern China was used as the study object, and the effects of intense anthropogenic activities on the evolution of the hydrochemistry and water quality of the karst groundwater were analyzed using a comprehensive application of a groundwater quality assessment, a multivariate statistical analysis, a hydrogeochemical analysis, and multi-factor regime monitoring of the karst groundwater quality. The results showed that during the time scale from 1991 to 2019, major ion components, such as Na + +K + , Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , and total dissolved solids (TDS), in the karst groundwater in discharge area increased by 1.73–4.59 times. In addition, the ion component contents primarily displayed a fluctuating equilibrium state from 2019 to 2023. At the spatial scale, the primary ion components in the karst groundwater in the discharge area were considerably higher than those in the recharge and runoff areas, and they also showed a gradual increasing trend from upstream to downstream and from the surrounding to the middle. Conclusion Intense anthropogenic activities changed the circulation conditions of karst groundwater and deteriorated the karst groundwater quality. The primary human activity factors that controlled the evolution of the karst groundwater during the different periods were different. The large-scale exploitation of karst groundwater and other human activities primarily affected the karst groundwater quality. The construction of the Zhuangli Reservoir had a positive impact and improved the karst groundwater quality downstream, but its long-term impact on the karst groundwater environment requires long-term monitoring and study.

Abstract:Globally, groundwater resources are being deteriorated by rapid social development. Thus, there is an urgent need to assess the combined impacts of natural and enhanced anthropogenic sources on groundwater chemistry. The aim of this study was to identify seasonal characteristics and spatial variations in anthropogenic and natural effects, to improve the understanding of major hydrogeochemical processes based on source apportionment. 34 groundwater points located in a riverside groundwater resource area in northeast China were sampled during the wet and dry seasons in 2015. Using principal component analysis and factor analysis, 4 principal components (PCs) were extracted from 16 groundwater parameters. Three of the PCs were water-rock interaction (PC₁), geogenic Fe and Mn (PC₂), and agricultural pollution (PC₃). A remarkable difference (PC₄) was organic pollution originating from negative anthropogenic effects during the wet season, and geogenic F enrichment during the dry season. Groundwater exploitation resulted in dramatic depression cone with higher hydraulic gradient around the water source area. It not only intensified dissolution of calcite, dolomite, gypsum, Fe, Mn and fluorine minerals, but also induced more surface water recharge for the water source area. The spatial distribution of the PCs also suggested the center of the study area was extremely vulnerable to contamination by Fe, Mn, COD, and F<sup>-</sup>.

Abstract:Various environmental factors could induce groundwater hydrochemical evolution, which should be considered when addressing groundwater environmental issues. However, the complex interactions among the environmental controls remain unknown for a groundwater flow system spanning multiple geological units. To fill this gap, we conducted a study on the groundwater hydrochemical evolution in the fluvial corridor of the Fen River, Northern China, utilizing a combination of hydrogeochemical and multiple isotope methods. Results reveal that the groundwater in the corridor has significantly degraded due to high concentrations of , , Cl − , or F − . We find an unordered evolution of the hydrochemical composition of groundwater along this corridor. These evolutions are driven by mineral dissolution/precipitation, dedolomitization, and cation exchange processes. Human activities play a significant role, with notable contributions including fluxes from agricultural fertilizers, manure, and sewage, as well as fluxes arising from coal mining activities. The combination between karst spring areas and faults/uplifts, between coal-bearing strata and mining activities fosters the mixing of karst water/mine water with shallow groundwater, promoting dramatic hydrochemical evolution of groundwater. The flat terrain and the natural blockage formed by mountains significantly enhance water–rock interactions and groundwater evaporation by slowing groundwater flow. The contribution of evaporation on groundwater salinity ranges from ~ 0.2% to 4.8%, highlighting its importance in the groundwater hydrochemical evolution. This study unravels the multifaceted nature of groundwater hydrochemical evolution. It emphasizes the four types of environmental controls, including hydrogeochemical processes, climate factors, human activities, and variations in geological settings, can be equally important, which is usually ignored. The findings enrich our understanding of groundwater evolution and highlight the challenges encountered in regions composed of diverse geological units.

Abstract:To study the recharge source, hydrochemical characteristics, and evolution process of karst underground water and surface water in the Xianghualing Mining area, we collected 32 groups of samples from karst underground water and surface water sources in and around the mining area. Based on multivariate statistical analysis, the Piper three-line diagram, Gibbs diagram, and ion ratio coefficient, this study analyzed the hydrogeochemical characteristics of karst underground water and surface water in the Xianghualing Mining area. The study systematically revealed the recharge source, recharge age, and hydrochemical evolution law of both water sources. The results showed that the karst underground water and surface water in the Xianghualing Mining area were weakly alkaline, with the main anions being HCO3- and the main cations being Ca2+. The hydrochemical types mainly included HCO3-Ca, HCO3-Ca·Mg, and HCO3·SO4-Ca·Mg types. Atmospheric precipitation was the primary source of recharge for karst underground water and surface water, and it was also influenced by evaporation during the runoff process. However, the evaporation effect of karst groundwater was relatively small, which was closely related to modern hydrology, and the cycle replacement process was more rapid. The hydrochemical evolution characteristics of karst underground water and surface water were mainly affected by rock weathering, cation exchange adsorption, mineral dissolution, and human activities （such as agricultural and mining activities）. Ca2+, Mg2+, and HCO3- were primarily derived from the dissolution of carbonate minerals, with a small portion also originating from the weathering and dissolution of silicate minerals. Na+ and Cl- were primarily derived from the dissolution of rock salts. Among them, Cl-, NO3-, and SO42- were greatly affected by external inputs from agricultural activities, domestic sewage discharge, and mining activities. The research results are of great significance to the cyclical evolution process of karst underground water and surface water, as well as the protection and utilization of water resources in the Xianghualing Mining area.

Abstract:Hydrochemical evolution and hydrological zoning patterns were identified. Rock weathering, carbonate precipitation and cation exchange control groundwater hydrochemical evolution. Spatial zoning patterns related by river hydrochemistry and anthrogogenic activities. A comprehensive understanding of the hydrochemical evolution and spatial patterns of shallow groundwater systems is essential for water resource management and wetland ecological restoration. The Baiyangdian Wetland is one of the most concerning areas because of the development of the Xiong'an New Area. The spatial characteristics of groundwater hydrochemistry and potential controlling factors associated with hydrochemical evolution remain unclear. In this study, hydrogeochemistry together with the hierarchical cluster analysis were used to elucidate the hydrochemical processes and hydrological zoning patterns of shallow groundwater systems in the Baiyangdian Wetland, North China Plain. The results showed that hydrochemical compositions of shallow groundwater had considerable spatial variations, which was closely related to the inflow rivers hydrochemistry and the dynamics of groundwater–surface water interactions. A significant increase in SO42− concentration occurring at the cone of the depression was related to extensive pumping caused by anthropogenic activities. Anthropogenic activities were also a major factor controlling the spatial distribution patterns of shallow groundwater hydrochemistry. Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO42− in the wetland and shallow groundwater were primarily derived from carbonate and gypsum dissolution, while Na+ and Cl− originated from halite and silicate dissolution. Rock weathering predominated the geochemical evolution of shallow groundwater in conjunction with carbonate precipitation and cation exchange. The hydrochemistry of the shallow groundwater system presented distinct spatial zonation patterns that were classified into four clusters corresponding to seven subzones. In Zones I–IV, water‐rock interaction was the dominant factor controlling shallow groundwater chemistry, which was driven by the positive groundwater–surface water exchange. The coupled effects of anthropogenic activities and river infiltration and mixing caused the high levels of dissolved components in Zones V–VII. This study contributes to have a better understanding of the water cycle and hydraulic connections among different bodies, and will benefit the rational evaluation of hydrochemical evolution and wetland ecological restoration in the Baiyangdian Wetland.

Abstract:The largest groundwater funnel area is located in the North China Plain (NCP) due to long-term and large-scale overexploitation of groundwater from 1970s. Comprehensive control and management measures have been implemented both in national-scale and local-scale since 2015. This paper presented the evolution of hydrochemical characteristics and its mechanism before (2014) and during the artificial governance (2015–2020) in the center of the NCP funnels (Hengshui City) based on water level, water chemical (including concentrations of K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , TH and TDS) data. By using Piper diagrams, ion ratio relationships, geostatistical analysis, Gibbs diagrams, chlor-alkali index and inverse hydrogeochemical simulation (PHREEQC), the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) Temporally, the dominant cation and anion were Na + and HCO 3 − both in shallow groundwater (SG) and deep groundwater (DG), respectively. Hydrochemical types both in SG and DG tend to be diverse, owing to the increase of SO 4 2− and Cl − proportion after groundwater overdraft management. Spatially, ion concentrations (except for HCO 3 − ) of discharge areas distributed higher due to shorter hydraulic retention time and flow path of recharge area. The impact of groundwater overdraft management on distribution characteristics of DG was lower than that in SG. (2) Compared with 2014 (before artificial management), SG and DG hydrochemical components had stronger correlation relationships with groundwater level. Hydrochemistry field was influenced by groundwater depth fluctuation and the rates of it at varying degree in recharge and discharge areas. Leakage from SG to DG can be deduced by similar alteration of ion concentrations. (3) In SG, the major water chemistry was controlled by evaporation and water–rock interaction, while dissolution of silicate and evaporate companied with ion exchange dominating the groundwater chemistry in DG from 2014 to 2020. Both in SG and DG simulation paths, dissolution/precipitation of mineral phases and artificial governance influence the hydrochemistry. DG also caused by SG leakage. During artificial management, human activities are a factor that cannot be ignored. Ion concentrations increased with the water–rock interaction enhanced, due to the rate of groundwater depth change decreasing.

Abstract:To determine the impact of natural factors and human activities on the hydrogeochemical evolution of karst groundwater, hydrochemical surveys were conducted in the Jinci spring area, north China. In the present work, a comprehensive method, including hydrochemistry, isotopes, statistical analysis and hydrochemical modeling, was applied to analyze the origin of karst groundwater, hydrochemical reactions, and the causes of SO 4 2− pollution. Isotopic characteristics ( 2 H and 18 O) suggest that karst groundwater is majorly replenished by precipitation infiltration and surface water leakage from the exposed carbonate rock areas. The hydrochemical facies evolve from HCO 3 -Ca and HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the recharge area, to HCO 3 ·SO 4 -Ca·Mg and SO 4 ·HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the transitional area, and SO 4 -Ca and SO 4 -Ca·Mg in the discharge area. Naturally, dissolution or precipitation of calcite, dolomite, gypsum and halite, as well as cation exchange predominate the hydrochemical evolution. Due to long-term coal mining activities, acid mine drainage mixed with karst groundwater, resulting in strong SO 4 2− contamination of groundwater in the spring area. According to 34 S isotope fractionation, SO 4 2− is mainly from gypsum dissolution (64%), followed by pyrite oxidation (36%). In addition, the mixing processes, rock–water interactions, cation exchange, and dedolomitization were identified and confirmed by hydrochemical modeling with PHREEQC program. The findings of this work are meaningful for groundwater sustainable utilization and contamination management.

Abstract:A linked river-irrigation-lake system exhibits intricate and dynamic hydrochemical variations, closely related to changes in natural conditions and anthropogenic activities. However, little is known about the sources, migration and transformation of hydrochemical composition, and the driving mechanisms, in such systems. In this study, the hydrochemical characteristics and processes in the linked Yellow River-Hetao Irrigation District-Lake Ulansuhai system were studied, based on a comprehensive hydrochemical and stable isotope analysis of water samples collected during spring, summer, and autumn. The results showed that the water bodies in the system were weakly alkaline with a pH range of 8.05–8.49. The concentrations of hydrochemical ions showed an increasing trend in the water flow direction. Total dissolved solids (TDS) were less than 1000 mg/L (freshwater) in the Yellow River and the irrigation canals, and increased to more than 1800 mg/L (saltwater) in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. The dominant hydrochemical types varied from SO4•Cl–Ca•Mg and HCO3–Ca•Mg types in the Yellow River and the irrigation canals to Cl–Na type in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. The ion concentrations in the Yellow River, the irrigation canals, and the drainage ditches were highest during summer, while ion concentrations in Lake Ulansuhai were highest during spring. The hydrochemistry of the Yellow River and the irrigation canals was mainly affected by rock weathering, while evaporation was the principal controlling factor in the drainage ditches and Lake Ulansuhai. Water-rock interactions including the dissolution of evaporites and silicates, the precipitation of carbonates, and cation exchange were the main sources of hydrochemical compositions in this system. Anthropogenic inputs had a low impact on the hydrochemistry. Therefore, greater attention should be paid in future to hydrochemical variations, especially salt ions, in the management of linked river-irrigation-lake system water resources.

Abstract:A thorough understanding of the evolution of coastal brine-bearing groundwater systems under the influence of human activities contributes to the sustainable use of coastal groundwater resources. Therefore, this study comprehensively investigated the processes associated with hydrochemical changes in groundwater during brine exploitation based on long-term monitoring data. The dataset comprised 102 samples (including groundwater, seawater, rain and river samples) collected from 1966 to 2021 to capture the hydrochemical variability. Significant changes in the brine water table and concentration between the pre-overexploitation period (1965–2000) and the exploitation period (2000−2021) are observed. From the relationship between stable isotope (δ18O and δ2H) values and Cl− contents, shallow saline water (SSW) near the drawdown cone (with δ18O and δ2H values of −4.66 ‰ ~ −3.57 ‰ and − 42.1 ‰ ~ −32.8 ‰, respectively) is similar geochemically to the brine inside the drawdown cone (with values of −4.30 ‰ ~ −3.10 ‰ and − 39.0 ‰ ~ −32.3 ‰, respectively), indicating that the SSW has a recharge effect on the underground brine. The delta values of major cations were calculated to analyze the hydrochemical processes at different water quality interfaces (saline/freshwater interface, salinewater/brine interface). The results demonstrated that the SSW and deep saline water (DSW) at the offshore brine/saline water interface undergo seawater intrusion, where SSW undergoes a salinization process with cation exchange (Na+ is exchanged for Ca2+ and Mg2+ in clay), while DSW undergoes a freshening process. The SSW at the saline/freshwater interface is affected by freshwater pumping, and the DSW undergoes a salinization process influenced by brine intrusion presenting the common salinization process with cation exchange. The hydrochemical model shows that the brine concentration recovered during the restricted exploitation stage due to the dissolution of gypsum and halite. If no measures are taken to restrict exploitation, then brine will eventually be replaced by saline water.

Abstract:Chaohu lake is a key water body for water pollution prevention and treatment in our country. However， it has been at a higher eutrophication level recently. Here， the surface water and groundwater in the Dianbu River Basin， a secondary tributary of Chaohu Lake， were taken as the research object. In order to test the hydrochemical composition and hydrogen and oxygen isotope values of different water bodies， 30 groups of surface water samples， 36 groups of groundwater samples， 16 groups of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope samples， and 18 groups of groundwater hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope samples were collected in August 2021 （wet season）， November 2021 （normal season）， and February 2022 （dry season）. The seasonal and spatial variation characteristics were analyzed to explore the hydrochemical characteristics and formation mechanism of water bodies by means of mathematical statistics， Piper triangular diagram， Gibbs figures， and ion ratios. The following results were obtained： ① precipitation was the main source of surface water and groundwater in Dianbu River Basin， and the evaporation fractionation effect of surface water was more significant than that of groundwater. At different periods， the surface water was more enriched with stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen than groundwater. The stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water showed seasonal variation， relative enrichment in the wet season， and depletion in the dry season. ② Both surface water and groundwater in the Dianbu River Basin were weakly alkaline， and the concentration of ions in surface water was significantly lower than that in groundwater. Ca2+ and Na+ were the main cations in surface water， Ca2+ was the main cation in groundwater， and the dominant anion in all water was HCO3-. The hydrochemical typology of surface water was mainly HCO3·Cl-Na·Ca， and that of groundwater was mainly HCO3-Na·Ca. ③ The concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes of surface water and groundwater showed certain seasonal and spatial differences. From the wet season to the dry season， the concentrations of TDS， K+， Na+， Ca2+， Mg2+， Cl-， and SO42- in surface water showed an increasing trend on the whole. The concentrations of Na+， Ca2+， and Mg2+ in groundwater showed little change but increased slightly， whereas the concentrations of Cl-， SO42-， and NO3- showed an increasing trend on the whole. The concentrations of Cl-， SO42-， and NO3- in the water showed relatively large seasonal fluctuations. From upstream to downstream， the concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes in surface water first decreased and then increased， among which the concentration of NO3- increased the most. The concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes of groundwater in the direction of runoff changed little overall， but the concentration in the discharge area was higher than that in the recharge area. ④ The formation of hydrochemical characteristics of the water was mainly controlled by water-rock interaction but was also influenced by human factors. The water-rock action was mainly the weathering dissolution of silicate rock， salt rock， and carbonate rock. Man-made pollutants such as sewage from a sewage treatment plant， domestic sewage， and feces had obviously changed the hydrochemical characteristics of the local water. ⑤ Compared with that in 2016， the concentration of NO3- in surface water showed a certain degree of reduction. The nitrogen pollution control work carried out by the local government had achieved certain results， but it was still necessary to strengthen the pollution prevention and control of sewage and feces in the downstream of the Dianbu River， some tributaries （such as the Dingguang River and Maqiao River）， and some residential areas.

Abstract:Fast population growth and rapid economic and societal development drive the massive extraction of groundwater, increasing complications for the relationship between surface water and groundwater. To study the surface water and groundwater interactions in the north and south tributaries of the Wei River (Xin and Jing Rivers), China, 17 surface water samples and 30 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed. Hydrochemistry and stable isotopes were used to study the surface water and groundwater interactions in the two rivers. The results showed that the main hydrochemical type of both surface water and groundwater in the Xin River watershed was HCO3-Ca•Mg, while that of the Jing River water was SO4•Cl-Na, and groundwater was of HCO3-Na type. The hydraulic connectivity between the surface water and groundwater of the two rivers was generally weak. The contributions of surface water, precipitation and lateral groundwater flow to groundwater in the Xin River were 48%, 34% and 18%, respectively, whereas in Jing River they were 27%, 51% and 22%. The river in the south of the Wei River has greater hydraulic connectivity than the river in the north. The results provide scientific basis for the integrated management of surface water and groundwater in the areas.

Abstract:Luan River is the main water source in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, northern China, where the groundwater system is vulnerable and pollution issue is serious. It is significant for regional groundwater resources protection to identify the hydrogeochemistry evolution and affecting factors along flow direction occurred in the upper reaches, especially the surface water-groundwater (SW-GW) conversion relationship. In this study, recharge, conversion and geochemistry evolution of SW and GW were elucidated based on physical-hydrochemical indicators and stable isotopes in 36 GW samples and 20 SW samples, which were collected in July 2019 and July 2020. The factor analysis was further utilized to determine the main factors responsible for regional hydrogeochemical evolution. Results indicate that GW recharged SW in plateau area, and SW and GW recharged each other in typical Alpine valley area. The hydrochemical types are HCO 3 − Ca·Mg and HCO 3 -Ca, and the hydrochemical evolution is dominated by weathering of silicate and carbonate minerals. The cation exchange adsorption has minor impact on groundwater hydrochemistry. The rise of SO 4 2− and NO 3 − contents in groundwater is related to industrial and agricultural activities. The main controlling factors of SW hydrochemical components included recharge from groundwater, industrial and mining activities, explaining 90.04% of data variance. However, water-rock interaction, agricultural and domestic sewage are responsible for GW quality, accounting for 83.38%.

Stable Isotope and Hydrochemical Evolution of Groundwater in Mining Area of the Changzhi Basin, Northern China

Abstract:Abstract The Changzhi Basin of China is an economically and ecologically important area with intensive human activities. To foster the sustainable development of groundwater resources and the economy, a total of 117 groundwater samples were collected in shallow and deep aquifers, including 91 2 H and 18 O isotope samples, to improved understanding of the natural geochemical processes and the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the groundwater chemistry. Synthetical application of the stable isotopes, Piper diagram, Gibbs diagram, ionic ratios and saturation indices to data analysis led to identification of hydrochemical zones for both aquifers from west to east of the basin. Isotopic analyses suggested that the groundwater recharge mainly comes from infiltration of rain water, hydraulic interaction between surface water and shallow groundwater, and lateral recharge from fissure water at the edge of the basin. The predominant natural geochemical processes include mineral dissolution in conjunction with the cation exchange. The excess deuterium method revealed that mineral dissolution contributed 81%–98% to the salinity of shallow groundwater and 84%–98% to the salinity of deep groundwater. Anthropogenic activities are secondary contributions to the hydrochemical evolution with fertilizer application, human waste and sewage discharges causing an increase in NO 3 -N content and coal mining activities affecting the ion content of Na + , Cl - , SO 4 2- , and HCO 3 - in the groundwater.

Abstract:The scarcity of freshwater resources in coastal plains has raised global concerns. Understanding the chemical characteristics and evolution of groundwater in coastal plains is crucial for ensuring sustainable water supply for residents and irrigation. This study focuses on a representative profile of the Luanhe plain, systematically analyzing hydrochemistry and stable isotopes of seawater, river water, and groundwater samples to elucidate groundwater chemistry evolution and investigate the influence of evaporation and mixing processes. Results showed that shallow groundwater was predominantly of the Ca-HCO 3 type, formed through the dissolution of halite, carbonate, and silicate minerals in the aquifer. Under the influence of evaporation and mixing processes, there was a transition in the chemical type towards Ca-Na-HCO 3 type. Especially in areas influenced by seawater intrusion at estuaries, a rapid shift towards Na-Cl type occurred. In addition, deep aquifers evolved predominantly into Ca-HCO 3 type groundwater through the leaching of silicate and carbonate minerals within the aquifer matrix. Along the flow path, influenced by cation exchange and mixing processes, the water chemistry underwent a shift from the Ca-HCO 3 type to the Na-HCO 3 type. The river water chemistry was primarily influenced by evaporation and the erosion of silicate and sulfate minerals from the riverbed. At estuarine zones, intense seawater intrusion significantly increased salinity and shifted the water chemistry from a Ca-Cl type to a Na-Cl type. This study elucidated the evolution mechanisms and influencing factors of coastal groundwater chemistry, providing scientific insights for local groundwater resource management.

Abstract:Hydrochemical evolution of groundwater can be related to and affected by mining activity, such as mine drainage. However, it is difficult to systematically and accurately identify and assess the hydrochemical evolution after mine drainage. In this study, we reported the hydrochemical evolution of groundwater in the overburden aquifers (Jurassic Anding and Zhiluo aquifers) under the influence of water drained from the underlying Yan'an aquifer, based on hydrochemistry and groundwater dynamics characteristics using self-organizing map (SOM) and time series analysis. The groundwater components presented significant change after mine drainage. A continuous decline of groundwater level observed at both Anding and Zhiluo aquifers revealed that these two aquifers had a good hydraulic connection and were influenced by mine drainage. Based on those, it is found that the water–rock interaction (minerals precipitation) and inflow of dilute water could be responsible for hydrochemical variations in Anding and Zhiluo groundwater, respectively. The results of this work could improve the understanding of hydrochemical evolution induced by mining activity and could provide an essential information for water resources management in the coalfield.
