Abstract:As a new cyanobacterial neurotoxin generated by cyanobacteria, BMAA was closely related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC). In this study, the degradation of BMAA by UV/chlorine process was investigated under the impacts of chlorine dosage, NOM dosage, pH and alkalinity. Results showed that only 10% of BMAA was removed by UV irradiation and 46.8% by chlorination in 5 min, however, 98.6% of BMAA was removed by UV/chlorine process in 5 min. The reaction rates were increased under alkaline conditions, but all achieved complete degradation in 5 min. Besides, HCO3- had slight inhibition, while NOM had significant inhibition on the degradation of BMAA. Furthermore, based on the detected degradation products of BMAA during UV/chlorine process, the possible degradation pathways were concluded. Overall, outcomes of this study exhibited that the use of the UV/chlorine process for BMAA degradation was appropriate in practical applications.

Abstract:Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) preoxidation is capable of enhancing cyanobacteria cell removal. However, the impacts of KMnO4 on cell viability and potential toxin release have not been comprehensively characterized. In this study, the impacts of KMnO4 on Microcystis aeruginosa inactivation and on the release and degradation of intracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and other featured organic matter were investigated. KMnO4 oxidation of M. aeruginosa exhibited some kinetic patterns that were different from standard chemical reactions. Results indicated that cell viability loss and MC-LR release both followed two-segment second-order kinetics with turning points of KMnO4 exposure (ct) at ct(y) and ct(r), respectively. KMnO4 primarily reacted with dissolved and cell-bound extracellular organic matter (mucilage) and resulted in a minor loss of cell viability and MC-LR release before the ct value reached ct(y). Thereafter, KMnO4 approached the inner layer of the cell wall and resulted in a rapid decrease of cell viability. Further increase of ct to ct(r) led to cell lysis and massive release of intracellular MC-LR. The MC-LR release rate was generally much slower than its degradation rate during permanganation. However, MC-LR continued to be released even after total depletion of KMnO4, which led to a great increase in MC-LR concentration in the treated water.

Abstract:β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) is a cyanobacterial neurotoxin associated with human neurodegenerative diseases, and its removal in drinking water is receiving increasing attention. In this study, the degradation of BMAA in UV/peracetic acid (UV/PAA) system was investigated. BMAA degradation followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The synergistic effect of UV and PAA exhibited a great potential for BMAA degradation, which was attributed to the generation of a large number of reactive radicals, of which R-C• was the most dominant contributor. We also explored the effects of different factors on BMAA degradation. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between BMAA degradation and PAA dosage, and the optimal effect was achieved at pH 7. Notably, the existence of water matrices such as bicarbonate (HCO3－), chloride ion (Cl－), humic acid (HA) and algal intracellular organic matter (IOM) all inhibited the degradation of BMAA. Based on the identified intermediates, this study suggested that reactive radicals degraded BMAA mainly by attacking the carbon-nitrogen bonds on BMAA. Besides, comparing the effect of Cl－ on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation in UV/PAA-post-PAA oxidation and UV/chlorine-post-chlorination systems, it was found that the former was more sensitive to the presence of Cl－.

Abstract:Bench-scale kinetics tests were conducted to evaluate the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), as well as the odorant degradation, during chlorination of representative algal odorants. beta-Cyclocitral degradation better followed a pseudo first order kinetics pattern, while the decomposition behaviors of beta-ionone and heptanal were better described by the pseudo second order kinetics. Trihalomethanes (THMs) were commonly found during chlorination of beta-cyclocitral, beta-ionone and heptanal, but dimethylsulfide and dimethyl trisulfide did not contribute to the THM formation. In contrast, haloacetic acids (HAAs) were undetectable in all the samples. During chlorination of beta-cyclocitral, beta-ionone and heptanal, primary intermediate oxidation products were identified. Particularly, beta-ionone was a significant THM precursor. Typically, the formation of chloroform was favored with the increasing pH from 2 to 12. In the tests to chlorinate raw water collected from the Taihu Lake, China, odorants in Micro cystis aeruginosa could contribute to the chloroform formation. beta-Cyclocitral and beta-ionone, accounting for 0.021% mu g/mu g DOC and 0.0027% mu g/mu g DOC of intracellular organic matter (IOM), produced 0.98% and 0.78% chloroform of IOM formed, respectively. A Comprehensive Assessment of Catalytic Performances of Mn2O3 Nanoparticles for Peroxymonosulfate Activation during Bisphenol A Degradation

Abstract:Catalytic performances of Mn2O3 nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation were comprehensively investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that 10 mg/L BPA could be 100% degraded within 20 min with the dosages of 0.2 g/L Mn2O3 and 0.1 mM PMS. Moreover, Mn2O3 showed remarkable activity in activation of PMS and excellent adaptability in various real water matrices, including river water, tap water and secondary effluents. Based on the radical detection and scavenging experiments, it was found that both radical and non-radical oxidation contributed to the degradation of BPA and O-1(2) was the dominant species in the degradation compared to (OH)-O-center dot, SO4 center dot- and O-2(center dot-). A total of 15 transformation products were identified by LC/MS-MS during BPA degradation in the Mn2O3/PMS system, and degradation pathways via three routes are proposed. Compared with lab-made catalysts reported in the literature, the Mn2O3 catalyst demonstrated its superiority in terms of its high TOC removal, low PMS consumption and fast degradation rate for BPA.
Effect and influence of two representative microcystins degradation by ozonation in water

Abstract:The kinetics and comparison on degradation of MC-RR and MC-LR by ozonation were investigated. The result showed MC-RR and MC-LR could be effectively degraded by ozonation and pseudo first-order kinetics was observed. The rate constant of degradation increased with ozone dosage, but decreased with pH value. MC-RR was degraded more easily than MC-LR under the same dosage of ozone, and its degradation rate increased faster with ozone dosage. The pH value was less effective to MC-RR than MC-LR. When pH value changed from 4.51 to 10.08, the rate constant of MC-RR and MC-LR decreased by 75.5% and 82.5%, respectively. The sequences of effect to the degradation of MC-RR and MC-LR of the four anions were similar, which were NO3 - > Cl- > SO4 2- > CO3 2-. The degradation of MC-RR was inhibited by SO4 2- and Cl-, but they hardly affected the degradation of MC-LR. The difference of degradation between MC-RR and MC-LR was caused by difference in reactivity of amino acids.

Abstract:The kinetics of the chlorination of leucine, isoleucine, and valine (BCAAs) was studied in excess HOCl by stopped-flow and spectrophotometric methods (25 ◦ C, I = 1.0 M NaClO 4 ). The intermediates and products were identified and monitored by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. It was established that these reactions are fully analogous and proceed according to distinct mechanisms under alkaline and neutral conditions. At high pH, the formation and subsequent rate determining decomposition of N -monochloroamino acid control the process. The decomposition occurs via competing pH-independent and OH − -assisted reaction paths and the sequence of chlorination, dichlorination and decarboxylation steps leads to the formation of N -chloroimines and their carbanionic forms, which are in fast acid – base equilibria. The dechlorination of the carbanions yields nitriles as the main products. The hydration of the N -chloro imines produces chloramine and aldehydes which are involved in further oxidation reactions with HOCl. The formation of chloroform and chloroacetaldehyde was confirmed in each system. At pH 7.0, the N -chloro derivatives of BCAAs form immediately and are converted into the corresponding N , N -dichloro species within a few seconds after mixing the reactants. In this reaction, the reactive form of the oxidant is Cl 2 O. The first-order decomposition of the dichloroamino acids occurs on stopped-flow timescale ( k = 0.5 – 0.7 s −1 ) and yields N -chloroimines which slowly decompose with a characteristic first-order rate constant on the order of a few times 10 −5 s −1 . The main products are the corresponding nitriles that account for about 80% and 60% of the original amounts of amino acids under neutral and alkaline ( c OH − = 5.00 × 10 −2 M) conditions, respectively. Aldehydes, carboxylic acids, chloroform and NCl 3 were also identified as by-products. The results unequivocally confirm that harmful chlorinated species may form from amino acids long after the chlorination step in water treatment technologies that deteriorates the quality of the finished water. Environmental implication In source waters, amino acids account for about 75% of the total dissolved nitrogen. Therefore, it is an essential issue how the reactions of these compounds with hypochlorite ion can be controlled to avoid the formation of toxic compounds. The compounds formed from BCAAs are considered to be harmful both under alkaline and neutral conditions (chloroacetaldehyde, chloroform, nitriles). However, some of the intermediates have extended lifetime in these systems and they may also react with other components of raw water during water treatment processes.

Abstract:During harmful algal blooms (HABs), permanganate may be used as a preoxidant to improve drinking water quality by removing algal cells and degrading algal toxins. However, permanganate also lyses algal cells, releasing intracellular algal organic matter (AOM). AOM further reacts with permanganate to alter the abundance of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors, which in turn affects DBP formation during disinfection. In this study, we evaluated the impacts of preoxidation by permanganate applied at commonly used doses (i.e., 1-5 mg/L) on DBP generation during chlorination and chloramination of AOM. We found that permanganate preoxidation increased trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation by up to 3-fold and decreased dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation by up to 40% during chlorination, indicating that permanganate oxidized organic amines in AOM to organic nitro compounds rather than organic nitrile compounds. To test this proposed mechanism, we demonstrated that permanganate oxidized organic amines in known DBP precursors (i.e., tyrosine, tryptophan) to favor the production of TCNM over DCAN during chlorination. Compared to the decreased formation of DCAN during chlorination, permanganate increased DCAN formation by 30-50% during chloramination of AOM. This difference likely arose from monochloramine's ability to react with non-nitrogenous precursors (e.g., organic aldehydes) that formed during permanganate preoxidation of AOM to generate nitrogen-containing intermediates that go on to form DCAN. Our results also showed that permanganate preoxidation favored the formation of dichlorobromomethane (DCBM) over trichloromethane (TCM) during chlorination and chloramination. The increased formation of DBPs, especially nitrogenous DBPs that are more toxic than carbonaceous DBPs, may increase the overall toxicity in finished drinking water when permanganate preoxidation is implemented.
[Gamma-Al2o3 Catalyzed Ozonation for Removing Taste and Odor Substance 2-Methylisoborneol in Drinking Water].

Abstract:gamma-Alumina was used as a catalyst in ozonation, and efficiency and influencing factors in degradation of taste and odor substance 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) in drinking water were studied. The result shown that gamma-alumina was activated in catalytic ozonation for degradation MIB not only in distilled water, but also in tap water. In distilled water condition, catalyzed ozonation could enhance 47% removal efficiency; in tap water condition, catalyzed ozonation could increase 40% removal efficiency. The concentration of ozone, gamma-alumina, MIB can affect the degradation of MIB observably. gamma-Alumina catalyzed ozonation for removing MIB did not depend on rigidity in water, but was affected by inorganic negative ions. By capturing the hydroxyl radicals produced by gamma-alumina catalyzed ozone decomposition, the bicarbonate/carbonate in natural water can restrain the effect of gamma-alumina catalyzed ozonation for degradation of MIB. Lower concentration of humic acid can promote the effect of oxidation of the MIB, but higher concentration of humic acid may reduce the efficiency. As pH values can affect the process of catalyzed ozonation and tert-butyl alcohol can inhibit the efficiency of catalyzed ozonation efficiency of MIB, the mechanism of gamma-alumina enhanced ozone oxidation of MIB can be identified as that gamma-alumina catalyzed ozone to decompose into hydroxyl radicals which further break up the molecule of MIB.

Abstract:Pre-oxidants are frequently used to eliminate algae and to enhance the removal of algae organic matter (AOM) at the intakes of drinking water sources; at the same time, they can cause the rupture of algal cells resulting in the release of AOM into the water sources, and AOM serves as a source of precursors for the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the final disinfection stage in the treatment process of drinking water. This study aims to investigate the effects of different doses of sodium hypochlorite pre-oxidation on algal growth, AOM, and potential DBPs in algal-rich drinking source water named Yanlong constructed wetlands and reservoir (YL CWs-R) ecosystem. DOC, UV 254 , and DON had a certain reduction, and K + concentration increased slowly at low dosage (≤ 1 mg/L). When the dose exceeded 2 mg/L, part of the algal cells were damaged, resulting in a significant increase in DOC, UV 254 , DON, and K + concentrations, and the characteristic peak value and the fluorescence volume increased significantly, with the humic acid-like fluorescence area experiencing the most significant increase. Total C-DBP and total N-DBP precursors can be partially removed under low dosage (≤ 2 mg/L), and high dosage of chlorine increased total C-DBP and total N-DBP precursors after oxidation. The precursors of DCAN, TCM, BCAA, and 1,1-DCP increased with increasing sodium hypochlorite dosage, and it had a better control of DCAA, DBAA, DBAN, and TCAM precursors when the dosage was less than 3 mg/L. With comprehensive algae removal efficiency, AOM release, and DBP precursors' control, the ideal chlorine pre-oxidation dosage was 1 mg/L.

Abstract:Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) has drawn more attention from research into drinking water treatment because of its potential to form nitrogenous disinfection byproducts. Amino acids are important DON constituents that are difficult to remove by conventional water treatment. The permanganate/hydrogen sulfite (PM/BS) system, a novel oxidation process, is used to remove a typical amino acid, glutamate. The factors that affect removal mechanism and the degradation pathways were studied. The results show that the rates of DON and glutamate removal in the PM/BS system within 10 min were 55% and 90%, respectively. The optimum pH for glutamate degradation was 5, and the optimal dosages of KMnO4 and NaHSO3 were 1 mM and 5 mM, respectively. Activation of <math><msubsup><mtext>MnO</mtext><mn>4</mn><mo>-</mo></msubsup></math> by <math><msubsup><mtext>HSO</mtext><mn>3</mn><mo>-</mo></msubsup></math> resulted in the oxidation of glutamate at very high rates. As shown by electronic spin resonance (ESR) experiments, Mn (III), <math><msubsup><mtext>SO</mtext><mn>3</mn><mrow><mo>-</mo><mo>⋅</mo></mrow></msubsup></math> , and •OH were involved in the degradation process. The oxidation products suggest that most of the glutamate undergoes oxidation to ammonia nitrogen within 10 min, eventually forming N2 in the process. No evidence shows that <math><msubsup><mtext>NO</mtext><mn>3</mn><mo>-</mo></msubsup></math> and <math><msubsup><mtext>NO</mtext><mn>2</mn><mo>-</mo></msubsup></math> formed during the entire process. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry results reveal that glutamate degradation consists of two separate pathways involving Mn(III), <math><msubsup><mtext>SO</mtext><mn>3</mn><mrow><mo>-</mo><mo>⋅</mo></mrow></msubsup></math> , and •OH, both of which convert -NH2 into <math><msubsup><mtext>NH</mtext><mn>4</mn><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> or directly to N2. It can be indicated that nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) formation decreased in the degradation process, as shown by gas chromatograph detection.

Abstract:Oxidation-assisted coagulation has been widely applied to destabilize algae and improve algae removal through a flocculation-sedimentation process in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). However, oxidation poses a potential threat to drinking water safety with increasing algal organic matter (AOM) in the algae-polluted surface water. This study investigated the effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) oxidation-assisted polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulation on algae removal, along with the identification of the optical properties for AOM fractions. The results have demonstrated that the increased NaOCl oxidant dose coupled with PACl coagulation induced by sweep flocculation is more effective in Microcystis aeruginosa (MA) cells destabilization and removal, where the highest algae removal rate around 99 %. However, NaOCl oxidation coupled with PACl coagulation fails to reduce the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in MA suspension attributed to the released AOM. Strong free chlorine destroys MA cells in response to the increases in humic acid-like (HAL) and fulvic acid-like (FAL) substances, while it is sufficient to degrade soluble microbial product-like (SMPL) and aromatic protein-like (APL) substances. In oxidation-assisted coagulation, bigger diameter (483–640 μm) with lower fractal dimension (1.31–1.39) of M. aeruginosa flocs are formed at low chlorine dosing ratio (Cl2:DOC = 1:1), while higher fractal dimension (2.39–2.75) with smaller diameter (143–395 μm) is reached at high chlorine dosing ratio (Cl2:DOC = 3:1). It is concluded that the changes in fluorescent organic matter fraction during chlorination dominantly affect coagulation performance for AOM removal in oxidation-coagulation process.

Toxicity of chlorinated algal-impacted waters: Formation of disinfection byproducts vs. reduction of cyanotoxins

Abstract:Seasonal algal blooms in surface waters can impact water quality through an input of algal organic matter (AOM) to the pool of dissolved organic matter as well as the release of cyanotoxins. The formation and speciation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorination of algal-impacted waters, collected from growth of Microcystis aeruginosa were studied. Second-order rate constants for the reactions of microcystins (MCs) with chlorine and bromine were determined. Finally, the toxicity of chlorinated algal-impacted waters was evaluated by Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays. Under practical water treatment conditions, algal-impacted waters produced less regulated trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), and total organic halogen (TOX) than natural organic matter (NOM). For example, the weight ratios of DBP formation from AOM to NOM (median levels) were approximately 1:5, 1:3, 1:2 and 1:3 for THMs, HAAs, HANs, and TOX, respectively. Increasing initial bromide level significantly enhanced THM and HAN concentrations, and therefore unknown TOX decreased. The second-order rate constant for the reactions of MC-LR (the most common MC species) with chlorine was 60 M-1 s-1 at pH 7.5 and 21 °C, and the rate constants for MC congeners follow the order: MC-WR > MC-LW > MC-YR > MC-LY > MC-LR ≈ MC-RR. The reaction rate constant of bromine with MC-LR is two orders of magnitude higher than that of chlorine. Unchlorinated algal-impacted waters were toxic owning to the presence of MCs, and chlorination enhanced their cytotoxicity and genotoxicity due to the formation of toxic halogenated DBPs. However, the toxicity of treated waters depended on the evolution of cyanotoxins and formation of DBPs (particularly unknown or emerging DBPs).
Impact of permanganate with polyaluminium chloride on algae-laden karst water: Behaviors and disinfection by-products control

Abstract:The removal of algal organic matter (AOM) through water treatment processes is a major approach of reducing the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP). Here, the formation of DBP from AOM in karst water under different combination of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and polyaluminium chloride (PACl) was investigated. The effect of divalent ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) on DBP formation was traced by AOM chemistry variations. For DBP formation after KMnO4 preoxidation, total carbonaceous DBPs (C-DBPs) decreased by 12.9% but nitrogen-containing DBPs (N-DBPs) increased by 18.8%. Conversely, the C-DBPs further increased by 3.3% but N-DBPs reduced by 10.7% after the addition of PACl besides KMnO4 preoxidation. The variations of aromatic protein-like, soluble microbial products-like compounds and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) were highly correlated with the formation of DBPs, which suggest aromatic substances strongly affect DBP behaviors at different treatment conditions. In the presence of divalent ions (Ca2+ = 135.86 mg/L, Mg2+ = 18.51 mg/L), the combination of KMnO4 and PACl was more effective in controlling DBP formation compared to the situation without Ca2+ and Mg2+. Specifically, trichloromethane formation was largely inhibited compared to the other tested DBPs, which may refer to complexation of electron-donating groups via divalent ions. While Ca2+ and Mg2+ may not affect the nature of α-carbon and amine groups, so the variation of haloacetonitriles (HANs) was not obvious. The study enhances the understanding of the DBP formation patterns, transformation of carbon and nitrogen by preoxidation-coagulation (KMnO4-PACl) treatment in algae-laden karst water.

Abstract:Preoxidation is usually used to remove cyanobacteria in drinking waterworks. However, the effects and mechanisms of action of oxidants on the membrane integrity of cyanobacterial cells are scarcely known, which may lead to cell damage and facile release of plenty of harmful metabolites. This study investigated the kinetics of Pseudanabaena cell lysis under separate exposure to potassium permanganate (KMnO4), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), and hydro-gen peroxide (H2O2). Mechanisms of interaction between them and the Pseudanabaena cell surface at the cellular and molecular levels were then defined. Results showed that cell lysis matched a two-stage kinetic model under KMnO4 or H2O2 exposure, and cells remained intact below a certain exposure threshold; in comparison, the log value of cell concentration decreased linearly with NaClO exposure. Pseudanabaena cell damage rates followed the order NaClO > KMnO4 > H2O2. Permanganate ions primarily reacted with cell-bound organic matter and then oxidized cell membrane, whereas neutral HClO produced by NaClO can permeate the membrane of algal cells and damage cell membrane quickly. As for H2O2, although H2O2 can gradually permeate the algal cell membrane, the reactivity between H2O2 and cell membranes was low. The algal cell membrane remained intact in the initial stage and then was damaged when H2O2 accumulation reached a certain level.
Oxidation of Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystins with Peracetic Acid

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) shows potential for use in drinking water treatment as an alternative to prechlorination, such as for mussel control and disinfection by-product precursor destruction, though its impact as a preoxidant during cyanobacterial blooms remains underexplored. Here, Microcystis aeruginosa inactivation and microcystin-LR and -RR release and degradation using PAA were explored. The toxin degradation rates were found to be higher in alkaline conditions than in neutral and acidic conditions. However, all rates were significantly smaller than comparable rates when using free chlorine. The inactivation of M. aeruginosa cells using PAA was faster at acidic pH, showing immediate cell damage and subsequent cell death after 15-60 min of exposure to 10 mg/L PAA. In neutral and alkaline conditions, cell death occurred after a longer lag phase (3-6 h). During cell inactivation, microcystin-LR was released slowly, with <35% of the initial intracellular toxins measured in solution after 12 h of exposure to 10 mg/L PAA. Overall, PAA appears impractically slow for M. aeruginosa cell inactivation or microcystin-LR and -RR destruction in drinking water treatment, but this slow reactivity may also allow it to continue to be applied as a preoxidant for other purposes during cyanobacterial blooms without the risk of toxin release.

Abstract:Blue-green algae are responsible for the production of different types of toxins which can be neurotoxic, hepatotoxic, cytotoxic and dermatotoxic and that can affect both aquatic and terrestrial life. Since its discovery the neurotoxin β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) has been a cause for concern, being associated with the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism-dementia complex (ALS/PDC). The initial focus was on Guam where it was observed that a high number of people were affected by the ALS/PDC complex. Subsequently, researchers were surprised to find levels of BMAA in post mortem brains from Canadian patients who also suffered from ALS/PDC. Recent research demonstrates that BMAA has been found at different levels in the aquatic food web in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. There is emerging evidence to suggest that sand-borne algae from Qatar can also contain BMAA. Furthermore, there is now concern because BMAA has been found not only in warmer regions of the world but also in temperate regions like Europe. The aim of this review is to focus on the methods of extraction and analysis of the neurotoxic non-protein amino acid BMAA. We also consider the neurotoxicity, aetiology, and diverse sources and routes of exposure to BMAA. In recent years, different methods have been developed for the analysis of BMAA. Some of these use HPLC-FD, UPLC-UV, UPLC-MS and LC-MS/MS using samples that have been derivatised or underivatised. To date the LC-MS/MS approach is the most widely used analytical technique as it is the most selective and sensitive method for BMAA determination.
Degradation of P-Aminobenzoic Acid by Peroxymonosulfate and Evolution of Effluent Organic Matter: the Effect of Chloride Ion

Abstract:Effluent organic matter (EfOM) and chloride (Cl-) are coexisting in the effluent of wastewater treatment plant. The degradation of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) along with the evolution of EfOM in the presence of Clwere assessed in this study. In PMS/Cl-/EfOM system, the degradation efficiency of PABA was enhanced with the increase of Clconcentration. Direct PMS oxidation made a major contribution to the degradation of PABA when Cldosage was lower than 50 mM. Hypochlorous acid/hypochlorite (HClO/ClO-) were identified to be the main reactive chlorine species (RCS) by experiments together with modelling results. Additionally, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) also contributed to the decomposition of PABA. The pseudo-first-order rate constant (k') of direct PMS oxidation (k ' PMS) rose slightly with the increase of pH value (6.0-9.0). The k' of RCS (k '(RCS)) improved significantly with increasing Clconcentration, while k '(RCS) reduced upon increasing EfOM concentration due to the scavenging effect by EfOM. Comparatively, the contribution of k' of O-1(2) (k ' O-1(2)) witnessed a slight rise from 4.17% to 7.96% with the increase of Clconcentration. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of EfOM showed a marked increase as the Cl- dosage increased. Humic-like component of EfOM was most liable to decomposition, whereas tryptophan-like aromatic protein in EfOM was not amenable to degradation. This study provides useful insights for PABA degradation by PMS in the coexistence of Cland EfOM in the advanced treatment of wastewater.
