Abstract:This chapter presents a computer simulation case study of two typical WDM phase-modulated millimeter-wave systems. The phase-modulated 60 GHz fiber multi-channel transmission systems employ single sideband (SSB) and double sideband subcarrier modulation (DSB-SC) schemes and present one of the latest research efforts in the rapidly emerging Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) application space for in-house access networks.
A Software Tool for Quick Codes Analysis and Selection in Spread Spectrum Communication Systems

Abstract:Spread spectrum communications rely on the selection of suitable sets of so-called spreading codes, also known as signatures, to ensure satisfactory system performance. Comparing different sets of spreading codes may be not a straightforward process, due to the amount of different code-related parameters that should be taken into account, and to the inherent differences in the codes generation algorithms. This paper presents a practical software tool to facilitate the evaluation and comparison of different families of spreading codes, under different parameters and constraints. Simulations to evaluate the selected signatures in a CDMA system, under AWGN or multipath channel, are also supported by the tool. The tool may be usefully applied in the design of communication systems and networks relying upon spread spectrum techniques.

Abstract:Coherent multi‐band splicing offers an effective approach, extending existing band‐limited communication systems to support high‐precision sensing applications by combining multiple narrow‐band measurements. However, this method presents considerable challenges, particularly in compensating for phase offsets and hardware distortions before merging the acquired samples, whether they are distributed contiguously or non‐contiguously. This survey paper reviews the current state of the art in coherent multi‐band splicing and identify key challenges that require further exploration by the research community. Coherent multi‐band splicing is an optimal solution for extending existing band‐limited communication systems to support high‐precision sensing applications. Conceptually, the communication system performs narrow‐band measurements at different centre frequencies, which are then concatenated to increase the effective bandwidth without altering the sampling rate. This can be done in parallel for multiple non‐contiguous subbands or by hopping across the different bands. However, multi‐band splicing poses significant challenges, particularly in compensating for phase offsets and hardware distortions before stitching the acquired samples, which can be distributed in contiguous or non‐contiguous manners. This survey paper studies the state of the art in coherent multi‐band splicing and identify open research questions. For beginners in the field, this review serves as a guide to the most relevant literature, enabling them to quickly catch up with the current achievements. For experts, open research questions that require further investigation are highlighted.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate spectral measurement and wavelength determination are fundamental and vital for many fields. A compact spectrum analyzer with high performance is expected to meet the growing requirements, and speckle-based spectrum analyzer is a potential solution. The basic principle is based on using the random medium to establish a speckle-to-wavelength mapping relationship for spectrum reconstruction. This article introduces current speckle-based spectrum analyzers with different schemes and reviews recent advances in this field. Besides, some applications by using speckle-based spectrum analyzers are also introduced. Finally, the existing challenges and the future prospects of using speckle for spectrum recovery are discussed.

Review on spin-wave RF applications

Abstract:This review explores the progress of spin-wave technology, emphasizing magnonics as a potential solution to modern challenges in radio frequency (RF) communication systems. To ensure clarity, the first two sections of the review reiterate premises of the magnonics, outline key milestones in spin-wave research, briefly review the state-of-the-art for technology and materials, as well as highlight potential directions for future developments. The third section is dedicated to spin-wave RF applications developed over the past 50 years, focusing on selected passive fundamental devices (filters, power limiters, delay lines, phase shifters, directional couplers, resonators, etc) and their operating principles. In the last section, the review further discusses the main advantages of spin-waves for RF applications while highlighting potential concerns, such as insertion losses, linearity and power capacity. Finally, potential solutions to address these challenges are proposed.

Abstract:Short-reach transmission systems traditionally utilize intensity modulation (IM) at the transmitter and direct detection (DD) at the receiver due to their cost-effectiveness, small footprint, and low power consumption. However, with the exponential increase in bandwidth demand, coherent optical communication systems have become necessary for long-haul distances, requiring application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms coupled with high-speed digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters to achieve Tbit/s speeds. As coherent technology matures, it will eventually become feasible for short-reach transmission. In this context, self-coherent systems have emerged as an intermediary solution, offering advantages over traditional IM/DD systems. While comprehensive review studies exist on self-coherent transceivers, they do not cover recent advances in phase retrieval methods for short-reach optical communications. This review article highlights recent developments in cost-effective self-coherent detection for short-reach systems through comparing the benefits of single sideband (SSB) transmission and Kramers-Kronig detection to carrier-assisted phase retrieval, the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, and the transport of intensity equation (TIE) method.

Abstract:Cognitive radio innovation could be able to alleviate the limitation of accessible radio spectrum by facilitating dynamic spectrum access. Analysts have indeed been focusing on empowering this innovative idea in dealing with the wireless spectrum since its presentation. As a result, rapid progress has been made in this sector of exploration. Reviews and instructional exercise papers are absolutely necessary to keep analysts up to speed with these advancements. As a result, we wanted to take a deeper look at the most emerging technologies in sensing of spectrum, from their origins to their present state and history, in this research. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both wideband and narrowband sensing of spectrum techniques, including the implementation challenges. The primary genuine usage of cognitive radio is also discussed in this study as television blank zones. Finally, but certainly not least, we examine at anticipated assessment directions. This study paper was written to help young scientists in the area understand the fundamentals of compressive sensing, spectrum sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI), which are all inspiring for future research and application, as well as to assist analysts in promoting the usefulness of spectrum sensing.

Abstract:A software controllable system which generates and transmits user defined RF signals is discussed. The system is implemented with multiple, modular transmitting channels that allow the user to easily replace parts such as amplifiers or antennas. Each channel is comprised of a data pattern generator (DPG), a digital to analog converter (DAC), a power amplifier, and a transmitting antenna. All channels are controlled through a host PC and synchronized through a master clock signal provided to each DAC by an external clock source. Signals to be transmitted are generated through the DPG control software on the PC or can be created by the user in a numerical computing environment. Three experiments are discussed using a two- and four-channel antenna array incorporating Chebyshev tapered TEM horn antennas. Transmitting distinct sets of nonperiodic bipolar impulses through each of the antennas in the array enabled synthesizing a sinusoidal signal of specific frequency in free space. Opposite to the standard phased array approach, each antenna radiates a distinctly different signal rather than the same signal simply phase shifted. The presented approach may be employed as a physical layer of encryption dependent on the position of the receiving antenna.
A Robust Radio Frequency Identification System Enhanced with Spread Spectrum Technique.

Abstract:A robust passive UHF RFID backscatter system enhanced with spread spectrum technique is presented in this paper. Due to the weak signal energy of the backscatter chain, traditional RFID backscatter communication is easily affected by the noises, interferences, and interceptions from the environment. To solve the problem, spread spectrum technique is introduced into the backscatter link of RFID system. Simulated results show that this approach largely reduces the Bit Error Rate and improves the system's reliability and security. For hardware realization, spectrum spreading operation is implemented in a RFID tag baseband processor, which is finally applied into a complete RFID tag and fabricated using 0.18um 1P6M CMOS technology. Furthermore, de-spreading operation including the PN acquisition is integrated into a FPGA implementation of RFID reader. Thus, a complete robust RFID backscatter system enhanced with spread spectrum technique is constructed. ©2009 IEEE.
27.5-29.5 GHz Switched Array Sounder for Dynamic Channel Characterization: Design, Implementation and Measurements

Abstract:A pre-requisite for the design of wireless systems is the understanding of the propagation channel. While a wealth of propagation knowledge exists for bands below 6 GHz, the same can not be said for bands approaching millimeter-wave frequencies. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and measurement-based verification of a re-configurable 27.5-29.5 GHz channel sounder for measuring dynamic directional channels. Based on the switched array principle, our design is capable of characterizing 128$\times$256 dual-polarized channels with snapshot times of around 600 ms. This is in sharp contrast to measurement times on the order of tens-of-minutes with rotating horn antenna sounders. Our design lends itself to high angular resolution at both link ends with calibrated antenna arrays sampled at 2$^\circ$ and 5$^\circ$ intervals in the azimuth and elevation domains. This is complemented with a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz, enabling nanosecond-level delay resolution. The short measurement times and stable radio frequency design facilitates real-time processing and averaging of the received wavefronts to gain measurement signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range. After disclosing the sounder design and implementation, we demonstrate its capabilities by presenting dynamic and static measurements at 28 GHz over a 1 GHz bandwidth in an office corridor environment.

Abstract:In the past as well as present wireless communication systems, the wireless propagation environment is regarded as an uncontrollable black box that impairs the received signal quality, and its negative impacts are compensated for by relying on the design of various sophisticated transmission/reception schemes. However, the improvements through applying such schemes operating only at two endpoints (i.e., transmitter and receiver) are limited even after five generations of wireless systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have emerged as a new and promising technology that can configure the wireless environment in a favorable manner by properly tuning the phase shifts of a large number of quasi passive and low-cost reflecting elements, thus standing out as a promising candidate technology for the next/sixth-generation (6G) wireless system. However, to reap the performance benefits promised by RIS/IRS, efficient signal processing techniques are crucial, for a variety of purposes such as channel estimation, transmission design, radio localization, and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances on RIS/IRS-aided wireless systems from the signal processing perspective.We also highlight promising research directions that are worthy of investigation in the future.

Abstract:This paper, mostly tutorial in nature, deals with the problem of characterizing the capacity of fading channels in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We focus on the practically relevant noncoherent setting, where neither transmitter nor receiver know the channel realizations, but both are aware of the channel law. We present, in an intuitive and accessible form, two tools, first proposed by Lapidoth & Moser (2003), of fundamental importance to high-SNR capacity analysis: the duality approach and the escape-to-infinity property of capacity-achieving distributions. Furthermore, we apply these tools to refine some of the results that appeared previously in the literature and to simplify the corresponding proofs.

Performance Analysis of Systems with Coupled and Decoupled RISs

Abstract:We analyze and compare different methods for handling the mutual coupling in RIS-aided communication systems. A new mutual coupling aware algorithm is derived where the reactance of each element is updated successively with a closed-form solution. In comparison to existing element-wise methods, this approach leads to a considerably reduced computational complexity. Furthermore, we introduce decoupling networks for the RIS array as a potential solution for handling mutual coupling. With these networks, the system model reduces to the same structure as when no mutual coupling were present. Including decoupling networks, we can optimize the channel gain of a RIS-aided SISO system in closed-form which allows to analyze the scenario under mutual coupling analytically and to draw connections to the conventional transmit array gain. In particular, a super-quadratic channel gain can be achieved which scales as N^4 where N is the number of RIS elements.

Interstellar Communication: The Case for Spread Spectrum

Abstract:Spread spectrum, widely employed in modern digital wireless terrestrial radio systems, chooses a signal with a noise-like character and much higher bandwidth than necessary. This paper advocates spread spectrum modulation for interstellar communication, motivated by robust immunity to radio-frequency interference (RFI) of technological origin in the vicinity of the receiver while preserving full detection sensitivity in the presence of natural sources of noise. Receiver design for noise immunity alone provides no basis for choosing a signal with any specific character, therefore failing to reduce ambiguity. By adding RFI to noise immunity as a design objective, the conjunction of choice of signal (by the transmitter) together with optimum detection for noise immunity (in the receiver) leads through simple probabilistic argument to the conclusion that the signal should possess the statistical properties of a burst of white noise, and also have a large time-bandwidth product. Thus spread spectrum also provides an implicit coordination between transmitter and receiver by reducing the ambiguity as to the signal character. This strategy requires the receiver to guess the specific noise-like signal, and it is contended that this is feasible if an appropriate pseudorandom signal is generated algorithmically. For example, conceptually simple algorithms like the binary expansion of common irrational numbers like Pi are shown to be suitable. Due to its deliberately wider bandwidth, spread spectrum is more susceptible to dispersion and distortion in propagation through the interstellar medium, desirably reducing ambiguity in parameters like bandwidth and carrier frequency. This suggests a promising new direction in interstellar communication using spread spectrum modulation techniques.

Abstract:This book begins with an overview of the RF control concepts and strategies. It then introduces RF system models for optimizing the system parameters to satisfy beam requirements and for controller design. In addition to systematically discussing the RF field control algorithms, it presents typical architecture and algorithms for RF signal detection and actuation. Further, the book addresses the analysis of the noise and nonlinearity in LLRF systems to provide a better understanding of the performance of the RF control system and to specify the performance requirements for different parts of the RF system. Today, accelerators require increased RF stability and more complex operation scenarios, such as providing beam for different beam lines with various parameters, and as a result LLRF systems are becoming more critical and complex. This means that LLRF system developers need have extensive knowledge of the entire accelerator complex and a wide range of other areas, including RF and digital signal processing, noise analysis, accelerator physics and systems engineering. Providing a comprehensive introduction to the basic theories, algorithms and technologies, this book enables LLRF system developers to systematically gain the knowledge required to specify, design and implement LLRF systems and integrate them with beam acceleration. It is intended for graduate students, professional engineers and researchers in accelerator physics.
A review of codebooks for CSI feedback in 5G new radio and beyond

Abstract:Codebooks have been indispensable for wireless communication standard since the first release of the Long-Term Evolution in 2009. They offer an efficient way to acquire the channel state information (CSI) for multiple antenna systems. Nowadays, a codebook is not limited to a set of pre-defined precoders, it refers to a CSI feedback framework, which is more and more sophisticated. In this paper, we review the codebooks in 5G New Radio (NR) standards. The codebook timeline and the evolution trend are shown. Each codebook is elaborated with its motivation, the corresponding feedback mechanism, and the format of the precoding matrix indicator. Some insights are given to help grasp the underlying reasons and intuitions of these codebooks. Finally, we point out some unresolved challenges of the codebooks for future evolution of the standards. In general, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the codebooks in 5G NR and aims to help researchers understand the CSI feedback schemes from a standard and industrial perspective.
