Abstract:The recent renaissance of lithium metal batteries as promising energy storage devices calls for in operando monitoring and control of electrochemical evolution of lithium metal morphologies. While the development of plasmonics has led to significant advancement in real-time and ultrasensitive chemical and biological sensing and surface-enhanced spectroscopies, alkali metals featured by ideal free electron gas models have long been regarded as promising plasmonic materials but seldom been explored due to their high chemical reactivity. Here, we demonstrate the in operando plasmonic monitoring of the electrochemical evolution of lithium metal during battery cycling by taking advantage of selective electrochemical deposition. The relationships between the evolving morphologies of lithium metal and in operando optical spectra are established both numerically and experimentally: Ordered growth of lithium particles shows clear size-dependent reflective dips due to hybrid surface plasmon resonances, while the formation of undesirable disordered lithium dendrites exhibits a flat spectroscopic profile with pure suppression in reflection intensity. Under the in operando plasmonic monitoring enabled by the microscopic morphology of metal, the differences of lithium evolutionary behaviors with different electrolytes can be conveniently identified without destruction. At the intersection of energy storage and plasmonics, it is expected that the ability to actively control and in operando plasmonically monitor electrochemical evolution of lithium metal can provide a promising platform for investigating lithium metal behavior during electrochemical cycling under various working conditions.

Abstract:Li metal has been regarded as one of the promising anode materials of the future due to its high specific capacity and low redox potential. To guarantee its safety and take full advantage of the capacity of Li metal batteries, it is important to understand the growth location, deposition uniformity, and degree of compactness of lithium metal deposition in the anode area during the operation of Li metal batteries. However, no research has been reported on the monitoring of lithium plating within the anode structure at the micro-level. Herein, we propose a new concept for the real-time monitoring of Li metal growth and the early surveillance of Li dendrites, which was demonstrated by simply adopting an alternating dielectric/conductive lamella structure. Within our alternated carbon nanofiber (CNF) scaffold and polyimide (PI) film host (CNF-PI host), the dielectric PI layer can block the direct electron transportation pathway between adjacent conductive CNF frameworks, thus guiding the Li metal plating in a more desirable stepwise "bottom-up" manner. The Li growth position could be detected in real time by monitoring the voltage between each conductive CNF layer and the counter electrode. And the Li deposition capacity inside each layer of CNF was further obtained, which reflected the stability of the Li deposition process. Meanwhile, due to the optimized Li deposition manner, a composite Li anode with this functional host shows excellent electrochemical performance. The full cell based on this functional Li metal anode with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode shows excellent cycling stability under both a high current density of 3.6 mA cm(-2) (1C rate) and areal capacity of 3.18 mA h cm(-2).

Abstract:Abstract Efficient lithium metal stripping and plating operation capable of maintaining electronic and ionic conductivity is crucial to develop safe lithium metal batteries. However, monitoring lithium metal microstructure evolution during cell cycling is challenging. Here, we report the development of an operando synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy method capable of probing in real-time the formation, growth, and dissolution of Li microstructures during the cycling of a Li||Cu cell containing a standard non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solution. The analyses of the operando X-ray tomographic microscopy measurements enable tracking the evolution of deposited Li metal as a function of time and applied current density and distinguishing the formation of electrochemically inactive Li from the active bulk of Li microstructures. Furthermore, in-depth analyses of the Li microstructures shed some light on the structural connectivity of deposited Li at different current densities as well as the formation mechanism of fast-growing fractal Li microstructures, which are ultimately responsible for cell failure.

Abstract:Enabling ultra-high energy density rechargeable Li batteries would have widespread impact on society. However the critical challenges of Li metal anodes (most notably cycle life and safety) remain unsolved. This is attributed to the evolution of Li metal morphology during cycling, which leads to dendrite growth and surface pitting. Herein, we present a comprehensive understanding of the voltage variations observed during Li metal cycling, which is directly correlated to morphology evolution through the use of operando video microscopy. A custom-designed visualization cell was developed to enable operando synchronized observation of Li metal electrode morphology and electrochemical behavior during cycling. A mechanistic understanding of the complex behavior of these electrodes is gained through correlation with continuum-scale modeling, which provides insight into the dominant surface kinetics. This work provides a detailed explanation of (1) when dendrite nucleation occurs, (2) how those dendrites evolve as a function of time, (3) when surface pitting occurs during Li electrodissolution, (4) kinetic parameters that dictate overpotential as the electrode morphology evolves, and (5) how this understanding can be applied to evaluate electrode performance in a variety of electrolytes. The results provide detailed insight into the interplay between morphology and the dominant electrochemical processes occurring on the Li electrode surface through an improved understanding of changes in cell voltage, which represents a powerful new platform for analysis.

Abstract:ConspectusDriven by the intrinsic safety and potential to achieve higher energy densities, solid-state Li-metal batteries are intensively researched. The ideal solid electrolyte should possess a high conductivity, should have electrochemical stability both toward the Li-metal anode and to high voltage cathodes, should suppress dendrites, should provide flexibility to deal with the volumetric changes of the electrodes, and should be easy to process. This challenging combination is to date not fulfilled by any solid electrolyte, be it organic, inorganic, or even a hybrid of the two. Pushing the development of solid electrolytes toward reversible room temperature operation when used in tandem with Li-metal anodes demands an understanding of critical processes that determine the properties of the solid electrolyte. These include the complex Li-ion transport as well as the Li-metal plating processes. This already presents the first experimental hurdle as the ability to directly and noninvasively monitor the Li-ion kinetics, Li densities, and Li chemistries, under in/situ or operando, is not trivial.The scope of this Account is the investigation and improvement of solid electrolytes, with the emphasis on the possibilities offered by solid-state NMR and neutron depth profiling as direct probes for the study of critical processes that involve Li ions and Li metal. Solid-state NMR allows us to unravel the complex interface chemical environment and the diffusion processes both in the bulk solid electrolyte and in the interface environment. These studies shed light on the role of interface composition, wetting and space-charge layers, on the macroscopic battery performance. Another technique that enables probing Li directly is operando neutron depth profiling, which allows us to determine the Li density as a function of depth. It provides a noninvasive and effectively nondestructive tool to examine delamination, irreversible reactions and dendrite formation during plating/stripping. Results demonstrate that it is very challenging to maintain the contact between Li metal and the SE during cycling, especially for the "anode-less" or "anode-free" configuration under low-pressure conditions. A perspective is provided on the potential improvement of the Li-ion transport, dendrite suppression, and preventing Li-metal-solid-electrolyte delamination as well as on the potential role of solid-state NMR and NDP techniques to guide these developments.

Abstract:<p>The application of lithium metal as an anode material for next generation high energy‐density batteries has to overcome the major bottleneck that is the seemingly unavoidable growth of Li dendrites caused by non‐uniform electrodeposition on the electrode surface. This problem must be addressed by clarifying the detailed mechanism. In this work the mass‐transfer of Li‐ions is investigated, a key process controlling the electrochemical reaction. By a phase field modeling approach, the Li‐ion concentration and the electric fields are visualized to reveal the role of three key experimental parameters, operating temperature, Li‐salt concentration in electrolyte, and applied current density, on the microstructure of deposited Li. It is shown that a rapid depletion of Li‐ions on electrode surface, induced by, e.g., low operating temperature, diluted electrolyte and a high applied current density, is the underlying driving force for non‐uniform electrodeposition of Li. Thus, a viable route to realize a dendrite‐free Li plating process would be to mitigate the depletion of Li‐ions on the electrode surface. The methodology and results in this work may boost the practical applicability of Li anodes in Li metal batteries and other battery systems using metal anodes.</p>

High-Throughput Combinatorial Analysis of the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Nanoscale Lithium Metal Plating

Abstract:The development of Li metal batteries requires a detailed understanding of complex nucleation and growth processes during electrodeposition. In situ techniques offer a framework to study these phenomena by visualizing structural dynamics that can inform the design of uniform plating morphologies. Herein, we combine scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) with in situ interference reflection microscopy (IRM) for a comprehensive investigation of Li nucleation and growth on lithiophilic thin-film gold electrodes. This multimicroscopy approach enables nanoscale spatiotemporal monitoring of Li plating and stripping, along with high-throughput capabilities for screening experimental conditions. We reveal the accumulation of inactive Li nanoparticles in specific electrode regions, yet these regions remain functional in subsequent plating cycles, suggesting that growth does not preferentially occur from particle tips. Optical-electrochemical correlations enabled nanoscale mapping of Coulombic Efficiency (CE), showing that regions prone to inactive Li accumulation require more cycles to achieve higher CE. We demonstrate that electrochemical nucleation time (tnuc) is a lagging indicator of nucleation and introduce an optical method to determine tnuc at earlier stages with nanoscale resolution. Plating at higher current densities yielded smaller Li nanoparticles and increased areal density, and was not affected by heterogeneous topographical features, being potentially beneficial to achieve a more uniform plating at longer time scales. These results enhance the understanding of Li plating on lithiophilic surfaces and offer promising strategies for uniform nucleation and growth. Our multimicroscopy approach has broad applicability to study nanoscale metal plating and stripping phenomena, with relevance in the battery and electroplating fields.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) dendrite growth significantly deteriorates the performance and shortens the operation life of lithium metal batteries. Capturing the intricate dynamics of surface localized and rapid mass transport at the electrolyte–electrode interface of lithium metal is essential for the understanding of the dendrite growth process, and the evaluation of the solutions mitigating the dendrite growth issue. Here we demonstrate an approach based on an ultrasensitive tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensor which is inserted close to the electrode surface in a working lithium metal battery, without disturbing its operation. Thanks to the superfine optical resonances of the TFBG, in situ and rapid monitoring of mass transport kinetics and lithium dendrite growth at the nanoscale interface of lithium anodes have been achieved. Reliable correlations between the performance of different natural/artificial solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) and the time-resolved optical responses have been observed and quantified, enabling us to link the nanoscale ion and SEI behavior with the macroscopic battery performance. This new operando tool will provide additional capabilities for parametrization of the batteries' electrochemistry and help identify the optimal interphases of lithium metal batteries to enhance battery performance and its safety.

Abstract:Lithium-metal anodes are considered as the most gifted anode material owing to the extraordinarily theoretical specific capacity and ultralow redox potential. Nevertheless, the inevitable Li dendrite growth during plating processes impedes its practical application and performance. In this paper, a model for lithium deposition and dissolution based on Monte Carlo method is proposed and developed. Simultaneous Li deposition and dissolution occurs in the electrolyte space, leading to the formation of isolated lithium during charge and discharge. Through the identification of potential active point for dissolution, the dissolution process under different operation conditions is simulated. The number and mobility of Li ion is recorded during dissolution process. Revealed by our simulation results, the distribution of electric field intensity affects the dissolution of Li dendrite and the isolated lithium appears during dissolution process. This work, therefore, gives insights and guidance into the future research and development of advanced dendrite free lithium-based batteries of high safety and energy, including solid-state batteries, lithium-ion batteries, Li-metal batteries, etc. Furthermore, the simulation results provide suggestions for echelon utilization and charging strategy of batteries used in portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid applications.

Abstract:Owning to their very high theoretical capacity, lithium metal anodes are expected to fuel the extensive practical applications in portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, unstable solid electrolyte interphase and lithium dendrite growth during lithium plating/stripping induce poor safety, low Coulombic efficiency, and short span life of lithium metal batteries. Lately, varies of micro/nanostructured lithium metal anodes are proposed to address these issues in lithium metal batteries. With the unique surface, pore, and connecting structures of different nanomaterials, lithium plating/stripping processes have been regulated. Thus the electrochemical properties and lithium morphologies have been significantly improved. These micro/nanostructured lithium metal anodes shed new light on the future applications for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Lean-electrolyte conditions are highly pursued for practical lithium (Li) metal batteries. The previous studies on the Li metal anodes, in general, exhibited good stability with a large excess of electrolyte. However, the targeted design of Li hosts under relatively low electrolyte conditions has been rarely studied so far. Herein, we have shown that electrolyte consumption severely affects the cycling stability of Li metal anode. Considering carbon hosts as typical examples, we innovatively employed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical computations to obtain a better understanding of the Li nucleation/deposition processes. We also showed the usefulness of in situ electrochemical impedance spectra to analyze interfacial fluctuation at the Li/electrolyte interface, together with nuclear magnetic resonance data to quantify electrolyte consumption. We have found that uneven Li nucleation/deposition and the crack of surface-area-derived solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer both lead to a great consumption of electrolyte. Then, we suggested a design principle for Li host to overcome the electrolyte loss, that is, uneven growth of the Li structure and the crack of the SEI layer must be simultaneously controlled. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated the usefulness of a 3D low-surface-area defective graphene host (L-DG) to control Li nucleation/deposition and stabilize the SEI layer, contributing to a highly reversible Li plating/stripping. As a result, such a Li host can achieve stable cycles (e.g., 1.0 mAh cm-2) with a low electrolyte loading (10 μL). This work demonstrates the necessity to design Li metal anodes under lean-electrolyte conditions and brings Li metal batteries a step closer to their practical applications.
Early Lithium Plating Behavior in Confined Nanospace of 3D Lithiophilic Carbon Matrix for Stable Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries.

Abstract:Considerable efforts are devoted to relieve the critical lithium dendritic and volume change problems in the lithium metal anode. Constructing uniform Li+ distribution and lithium "host" are shown to be the most promising strategies to drive practical lithium metal anode development. Herein, a uniform Li nucleation/growth behavior in a confined nanospace is verified by constructing vertical graphene on a 3D commercial copper mesh. The difference of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition and lithium growth behavior in the confined nanospace is further demonstrated by in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and line-scan energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDS) methods. As a result, a high Columbic efficiency of 97% beyond 250 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2) and a prolonged lifespan of symmetrical cell (500 cycles at 5 mA cm(-2)) can be easily achieved. More meaningfully, the solid-state lithium metal cell paired with the composite lithium anode and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM) as the cathode also demonstrate reduced polarization and extended cycle. The present confined nanospace-derived hybrid anode can further promote the development of future all solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:<p>Lithium metal batteries are recognized as the ultimate next generation batteries of high specific energy. The energy density is hopeful to increase by 2–3 times when lithium ion batteries change the graphite anode to lithium metal. Undesirable dendrite growth and low coulombic efficiency are known as the key problems of lithium metal anode, while the resulted stress accumulation with cycling may also have impact on its performance. In this work, an operando thickness measuring equipment is used to track the thickness variation behavior of lithium metal anode during cycling using Li|carbonate electrolyte|Li symmetric cells. Combined with the voltage profile and morphology observation, the lithium plating/stripping mechanism is discussed. Dendrites and parasitic reactions may result in contrary effect on potential or voltage signal, while the operando thickness tracking technology can provide indispensable and complementary information to judge the exact situation of lithium metal anode. The quantitative study shows that the cycle life of the Li||Li symmetric cell is more sensitive to current density than areal capacity. Operando thickness measurement is not only promising to study the lithium plating/stripping mechanism, but also provides the important stress data quantitatively for battery design.</p>

Abstract:In the current technological landscape, lithium metal batteries have significantly surpassed the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, The advent of anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) offers higher energy densities.. They also provide advantages such as reduced process complexity and lower costs due to their design that eliminates the need for anode materials. Unlike the lithium-ion insertion and extraction reactions in traditional lithium-ion batteries. This makes them easier to lithium dendrite formation, which can puncture the separator or solid electrolytes, among other issues. In this work, we developed anin-operando electron microscopic technique with a unique vacuum square-cell design to ensure air-tight transfer of in-operandocells with vacuum protection into the SEM chamber. We significantly improved the imaging resolution with a windowless design, enabling the direct electron beam to focus on the electrode interfaces. Thus, real-time imaging of Li growth could be achieved via a stable current supply and controlled temperature. we systematically analyzed the Li growth and dendrite propagation behavior in AFLMBs using solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). In particular, we used polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based SPEs containing different lithium salts, namely 25wt% Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ( LiTFSI ), Lithium difluoro (oxalateo)borate ( LiDFOB ), and Lithium bis(oxalate)borate ( LiBOB ), within a LiFePO 4 ||Cu anode-free cell configuration. Under a fixed current density, Li deposition and stripping were conducted, in which the PEO-LiTFSI SPE exhibited uniform deposition with a mossy lithium dendrite morphology. In the subsequent deposition process, some branching lithium dendrites were observed. Meanwhile, PEO-LiBOB showed uneven Li deposition with needle-like dendritic formation, potentially disrupting the SPE/electrode interface and leading to safety hazards. Lastly, PEO-LiDFOB initially showed mossy lithium deposition. In contrast, a few dendritic lithium structures appeared as the deposition process continued into the intermediate and later stages. The study successfully established a novel in-situ electron microscopy observation platform isolating water and oxygen. This platform recreated the actual battery operating environment, enhancing the credibility of experimental results. Additionally, we successfully elucidated the growth mechanisms of lithium dendrites in SPE with different lithium salts in the LFP||Cu configuration. This in-situ microscope technology aims to observe the relevant mechanisms behind dynamic deposition. Understanding how this deposition affects battery performance and safety and combining it with advanced operational and ex-situ characterization techniques can further promote the development of all-solid -state batteries in the future.
Dynamic Lithium Distribution upon Dendrite Growth and Shorting Revealed by Operando Neutron Imaging

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has the highest theoretical capacity and is essential for energy storage technologies beyond conventional Li chemistries. However, its utilization inevitably leads to dendrite growth from repeated plating and stripping, eventually shorts the battery. The process that leads to shorting and the consequential electrochemical impacts are not well understood due to its dynamic features. Herein, we apply neutron radiography to study the Li dendrite growth in real time. The dynamic distribution of Li flowing from the anode to cathode during charge, induced by the internal short circuit due to Li dendrite growth, has been observed. Furthermore, a competing mechanism after battery shorting between the short-induced self-discharge and charge is proposed to explain the voltage drop/rise during the extended charging time. Our work provides mechanistic insights with a deep understanding of dendrite Li shorting and redistribution. This can lead to safe design principles of Li metal electrodes in batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) with graphite as an anode and lithiated transition metal oxide as a cathode are approaching their specific energy and power theoretical values. To overcome the limitations of LiBs, lithium metal anode with high specific capacity and low negative redox potential is necessary. However, practical application in rechargeable cells is hindered by uncontrolled lithium deposition manifesting, for instance, as Li dendrite growth which can cause formation of dead Li, short circuits and cell failure. The electrochemical behaviour of a protic additive (NH 4 PF 6 ) in a carbonate-based electrolyte has been investigated by operando confocal Raman spectroscopy, in situ optical microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elucidating its functional mechanism. The ammonium cation promotes a chemical modification of the lithium metal anode-electrolyte interphase by producing an N -rich solid electrolyte interphase and chemically modifying the lithium surface morphology by electrochemical pitting. This novel method results in stable lithium deposition and stripping by a decreasing the local current density on the electrode, thus limiting dendritic deposition.

Abstract:Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) show unique superiority for secondary batteries because they possess the lowest molar mass and reduction potential among metallic elements. It can diminish the large gap in energy density between secondary batteries and fossil fuels. However, notorious dendrite propagation gives rise to large volume expansion, low reversibility and potential safety hazards, making the commercial application of LMAs a perennial challenge. The booming development in material characterization deepens the understanding of the dendrite formation mechanism, and the great progress made via nanotechnology-based solutions hastens practical procedures. In this paper, we highlight the current understanding of lithium dendrites. We first illustrate different nucleation theories and growth patterns of lithium dendrites. According to the growth patterns, we classify dendrites into three categories to accurately describe their different formation mechanisms. Then, we concentrate on the factors that may lead to dendritic deposits in each electroplating step. The dendritic morphology originates from the inhomogeneity of Li atoms, electrons, mass transport in the bulk electrolyte and the solid electrolyte interphase. Different inducements lead to different growth patterns. Based on this understanding, strategies for controlling lithium plating are divided into five methodologies. Reasonable integration of the strategies is expected to provide new ideas for basic research and practical application of LMAs. Finally, current limitations and advice for future research are proposed, aiming at inspiring engaged contributors and new entrants to explore scalable solutions for early realization of industrialization.

Abstract:The evolution of mechanical stress in lithium metal anodes has been suggested as a persistent challenge for large volume fluctuations, dendritic lithium deposition, and eventual failure of the electrodes. There is, however, only limited knowledge and probe methods regarding the stress generation of lithium metal anodes. Here, the stress evolution of a practical lithium metal anode during lithium plating/stripping was studied for the first time and in situ precise measurements were performed using a well-designed electrochemistry–mechanics-coupled cell device. A failure mechanism of the Li metal anode was proved by the observed Li morphology and the continuously increasing stress evolution of the Li metal over cycling. The Li metal anode suffers from a dramatic stress increase and irreversible volume expansion due to the formation of porous Li and "dead" Li after the continuous Li metal volume change during the electrochemical reaction. The real-time stress evolution of lithium could be probed with a variety of parameters, e.g., electrolytes, rates, cathode mass loadings, and even short circuits. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anodes (LMAs) are considered to be the holy grail of electrodes to enable advanced battery chemistry for energy‐intensive applications. However, the formation of Li dendrites and their intricate interplay with the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) remain unclear to date. Herein, a simple yet efficient methodology for in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation is reported, and the relationship between the SEI chemistry and the morphology of LMAs is unraveled by a combination of TEM imaging and selected area electron diffraction analysis in an unprecedented way. The authors find that the coexistence of LiF and Li3N in the SEI layer helps realize dendrite‐free Li deposition and directly visualize the deposition–dissolution behavior of individual Li deposits with different microstructures. The approach should be applicable to scrutinize a broad range of interfacial reactions in nonvolatile electrolytes (e.g., ionic liquid, glass‐, and ceramic‐based electrolytes) relevant to future energy storage devices, including magnesium secondary batteries. A new transmission electron microscopy methodology is presented to accurately monitor the morphology evolution of lithium metal anodes and their solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) under realistic operation conditions. This method combines the advantages of conventional open‐cell (high‐resolution visualization) and liquid‐cell approaches (better mimicking a real battery), which will expedite the development of next‐generation electrode materials.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium (Li)-based batteries, including Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and Li-metal batteries (LMBs), are essential energy storage devices. However, their electrochemical performance in practical applications is affected by Li electroplating characters and accompanying inevitable dendrite growth, which undermines their safety and longevity. Effective monitoring of electroplated Li formation, dendrite growth dynamics, and the evolution of inactive/active Li components are essential for understanding the degradation pathways of Li-based batteries and realizing their highly reversible elongated lifespan. Recently, significant research progress has been achieved in the quantitative detection and characterization of dendrite Li growth and evolutions, including chemical quantification, electrochemical analysis, and characterization techniques derived quantified methodologies. They provide new insights into how metallic Li formation affects the performance of Li-based batteries. This review article comprehensively summarizes the latest research advancements in quantitatively detecting and characterizing metallic Li formation and its effects on the performance of Li-based batteries. It provides an improved understanding of the failure proliferation induced by metallic Li formation. The review also discusses the positive effects of techniques on understanding failure mechanisms, critical unknown aspects, challenges, and potential future research directions necessary to overcome the limitations originating from metallic Li electroplating. We propose that future research focus on refining quantitative detection techniques and controlling metallic Li formation, enhancing the long-term stability of Li-based batteries.
