Abstract:Using sulfonated and fluorinated poly (arylene ether ketone) comprising functional strong coordination group benzimidazole (SPAEK-F-BI) as a template film, a novel fabrication method of cobalt nanoflowers (CoNFs) and non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensor was developed in this work. After the precursors Co2+ ions were cooperatively bound by sulfonate and imidazole functionalities contained in SPAEK-F-BI film through ion exchange and strong coordination action, cobalt colloid nuclei were formed and grew to flower-like nanostructures by subsequent in-situ electrochemical reduction on SPAEK-F-BI film modified GCE. Characterization of SPAEK-F-BI film and CoNFs/SPAEK-F-BI film on GCE was performed in detail by FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results of SEM showed that beautiful CoNFs constructed by Co colloid nanosheets with just a few nanometers thickness were well dispersed on uniform SPAEK-F-BI film modified GCE, and the density of CoNFs was mainly influenced by the concentration of the precursor solution CoSO4. The CoNFs/SPAEK-F-BI composite modified electrode exhibited good electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation in 0.1M NaOH solution, and the kinetic parameters of glucose oxidation were determined using chronoamperometry. When it was applied for the determination of glucose by amperometry at a potential of 0.6V versus Ag/AgCl, the linear range from 5μM to 1.14mM and the detection limit of 800nM (S/N = 3) were obtained. Finally, it was successfully employed to detect the glucose in human serum real samples, and the results were agreed closely with those measured in hospital.

Abstract:In this paper, α-Fe2O3 ceramic nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning poly(vinyl alcohol)/Fe (NO3)3·9H2O composite nanofibers and followed by calcination. The morphologies and structures of the as-prepared samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The gas sensing properties of the sensor based on the as-prepared α-Fe2O3 nanofibers were investigated in detail. The experimental results exhibited that our product held rapid response-recovery and high sensitivity characteristics to ethanol vapor. The response and recovery time of the sensor to C2H5OH vapor (from 100 to 5000ppm) are about 3 and 5s, respectively.
Facial synthesis of Fe/Fe3N@carbon nanocomposite for simultaneous electrochemical detection of dopamine and acetaminophen

Abstract:In this work, a serial of Fe/Fe3N based nanocomposites were synthesized by high-temperature pyrolytic method. Structural characterizations show that the small Fe/Fe3N nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the surface of carbon films, where thin carbon may effectively enhance the stability of Fe/Fe3N and the carbon films can accelerate the migration of electrons. Moreover, Fe/Fe3N based composite can significantly increase the effective area of bare GCE because of its high conductivity, large surface area, and good catalytic property. These structural advantages enhance the electrochemical performance of the constructed electrodes toward simultaneous dopamine (DA) and acetaminophen (AP) sensing. Under optimum condition, the linear ranges for DA and AP detection were 0.05–66.4 μM and 0.05–56.9 μM, respectively. In addition, due to its high sensitivity, good selectivity and strong stability, Fe/Fe3N-900@GCE can also be applied for detecting DA and AP in real samples. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for constructing new electrode materials for small biomolecule sensing.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides have garnered a lot of attention in the field of electrocatalysis along with their unique crystal structure and excellent catalytic properties. In this study, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) decorated with Mn3O4/NiO nanoparticles were made using electrospinning and calcination. The conductive network constructed by CNFs not only facilitates electron transport, but also provides landing sites for nanoparticles, thus reducing nanoparticle aggregation and exposing more active sites. Additionally, the synergistic interaction between Mn3O4 and NiO improved electrocatalytic capacity for glucose oxidation. The Mn3O4/NiO/CNFs modified glassy carbon electrode shows satisfactory results in terms of linear range and anti-interference capability for glucose detection, suggesting that the constructed enzyme-free sensor has a promising application in clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of Co- and Fe-based bimetallic nanocatalysts embedded in mesoporous carbon and g-C3N4 nanosheets (denoted as Co3O4/Fe3O4/mC@g-C3N4) for selectively simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine acid (DA), and uric acid (UA). These electrocatalysts consisting of bimetallic Co-Fe alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon matrix were prepared via pyrolysis of Co/Fe-MOFs after grinding with high amounts of melamine. Chemical/crystal structures suggest high contents of mesoporous carbon in calcinated Co3O4/Fe3O4/mC nanocomposites, which exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward small biomolecules. The intrinsic performances of Co/Fe-MOFs with large specific surface area and regular nodes in the two-dimensional nanostructured g-C3N4 nanosheets endowed the as-prepared series of Co3O4/Fe3O4/mC@g-C3N4 nanocomposites with remarkable electrocatalytic activities and high adsorption ability toward oxidation of AA, DA, and UA. The developed biosensors also showed long-term stability and high selectivity for targeted analytes, with satisfactory results on actual samples in human urine. The results indicate that the as-synthesized Co3O4/Fe3O4/mC@g-C3N4 nanostructure exhibits good electrocatalytic activity and potential applications in clinical diagnosis and biosensing. Abstract:Nanofibers or nanofibrous membranes prepared by electrospinning possess many attractive properties, including excellent mechanical properties, high specific surface area and high porosity, making them attractive for sensor application, especially for the electrochemical sensors. Many nanomaterials are used as additives to improve the conductivity, sensitivity and selectivity of sensors. Based on the different modifiers of electrode materials, electrochemical sensors can be divided into enzyme sensors and non-enzyme sensors. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of the electrochemical sensors fabricated by electrospinning, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensors, glucose sensors and other sensors. In addition, the sensing mechanisms of various electrochemical sensors are introduced in detail. Finally, future research directions of electrochemical sensors based on electrospinning and the challenges faced by large-scale applications of electrospun electrochemical sensors are presented.

Abstract:In this study, perovskite samarium ferrite (SmFeO3) nanofibers have been successfully fabricated by electrospinning route and calcination process. The as-prepared sample was characterized by various technologies. The results show that the surfaces of SmFeO3 nanofibers are of extreme depression and roughness, which increases contact area between gases and material surface, contributing to enhancing gas sensing properties. The sensor based on as-prepared SmFeO3 nanofibers owns good response and distinct selectivity to ethylene glycol, and response value reaches 18.19 to 100 ppm ethylene glycol at 240 °C, even to 5 ppm ethylene glycol with high response value of 2.18. In addition, the gas sensing mechanism based on hole accumulation layer model was explained in detail.

Abstract:An ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor was fabricated for electroanalytical determination of ascorbic acid(AA), dopamine(DA) and uric acid(UA) individually and simultaneously based on polypyrrole hollow nanotubes loaded with Au and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles(NPs) uniformly(PPy@Au-Fe 3 O 4 ). The PPy@Au-Fe 3 O 4 nanotubes were synthesized in one-pot using MoO 3 nanorods as templates and the polymerization of Py, the formation of Au and Fe 3 O 4 NPs and the removel of MoO 3 templates took place stimultaneously. Electrochemical studies reveal that PPy@Au-Fe 3 O 4 modified glassy carbon electrode(GCE) possesses excellent electrocatalytic activities toward the oxidation of AA, DA and UA. Their oxidation peak currents increase linearly in the concentration ranges of 1–2000 μmol/L for AA, 0.01–25 and 25–300 μmol/L for DA and 0.1–300 μmol/L for UA. Their detection limit values( S/N =3) were calculated as 0.45, 0.0049, and 0.051 μmol/L for AA, DA and UA in the individual detection. By changing the concentrations simultaneously, the calibration curves showed linearity to 1000, 200, and 200 μmol/L with detection limit of 0.39, 0.0060, and 0.060 μmol/L for AA, DA, and UA, respectively. Finally, the obtained biosensor was successfully applied to the detection of AA, DA, and UA with satisfactory results on actual samples.

Abstract:It is of great significance for electrochemical sensors to simultaneously detect dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) related to biological metabolism. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets (CNS) was prepared as electrocatalysts to improve the sensitivity, the selectivity, and the detection limit of the simultaneous detection. First, 2D amorphous iron-metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOF) was synthesized with Fe3+ and terephthalic acid via a facile wet chemistry method at room temperature. And then, CNS was prepared by pyrolysis and pickling of Fe-MOF. CNS had large specific surface area, good electrical conductivity and lots of carbon defects. The response currents of the CNS modified electrode was larger than those of the control electrodes in the simultaneous determination. The simultaneous determination were measured via difference pulse voltammetry to reduce the effect of capacitive currents on quantitative analysis. The CNS modified electrodes showed high sensitivity and low detection limit for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA. The modified electrodes have been successfully used to detect DA and UA in normal human serum.

Abstract:A simple electrochemical sensor based on electrochemically synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles was constructed by an ink with the nanoparticles, isopropanol, NAFION and carbon Vulcan to detect dopamine, uric acid and ascorbic acid. The electrocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles for the oxidation of the analyte molecules was examined by means of cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The parameters controlling the performance of the sensor were optimized, such as the amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10 mg), amount of binder (5, 10, 15 μL) and carbon Vulcan in the ink (4, 6, 8 mg). The temperature was maintained at 25 °C and the pH was 7.5 with buffer phosphate. The optimal sensor conditions were 8 mg magnetite, 4 mg carbon Vulcan and 5 μL of NAFION@ 117. The calibration curves for the three analytes were determined separately, obtaining linear ranges of 10–100, 20–160 and 1050–2300 μM and limits of detection of 4.5, 14 and 95 μM for dopamine, uric acid and ascorbic acid, respectively. This electrochemical sensor has also shown significant sensitivity and selectivity without interference from the three analyte molecules presented simultaneously in solution. This sensor was applied for the detection of these molecules in real samples.

Abstract:A novel carbon nanohorns/poly(glycine) based sensor was successfully fabricated by electropolymerization of glycine at carbon nanohorns modified glassy carbon electrode for simultaneous determination of uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Electrochemical responses of as-prepared electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and differential pulse voltammetry. Owing to the synergistic effect of carbon nanohorns and poly(glycine), three well defined and separated oxidation peaks were observed. Peak separations between AA and DA, DA and UA at as-prepared electrode were 130 and 120mV, respectively. The current of the oxidation peaks showed a linear dependent on the concentrations of UA, DA and AA in the range of 2–350μM, 1–280μM and 30–450μM, respectively, and the detection limits were calculated as 0.18, 0.03 and 0.34μM (S/N=3), respectively. Based on the simple preparation and prominent electrochemical properties, the obtained carbon nanohorns/poly(glycine) modified electrode was applied for the simultaneous determination of UA, DA and AA in the urine samples.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have become increasingly important for applications in energy materials, optical devices and biosensors. Here we report a facile technique to fabricate a nanofibrous membrane of GQDs by electrospinning water-soluble GQDs with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) directly. The structure and fluorescence properties of the fabricated PVA/GQD nanofibrous membrane were investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy. It was found that the electrospun PVA/GQD nanofibrous membrane has a three-dimensional structure with a high surface area to volume ratio, which is beneficial for the adsorption of electrolytes and the diffusion of reactants. For the first time, the created PVA/GQD nanofibrous membrane was utilized to fabricate dual-purpose fluorescent and electrochemical biosensors for highly sensitive determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose. The experimental results indicated that the fluorescence intensity of the nanofibrous membrane decreased linearly with increasing H2O2 concentration, because the addition of H2O2 leads to fluorescence quenching of the GQDs, which endows the fabricated nanofibrous membrane with fluorescence activity. Besides, after binding glucose oxidase onto the created nanofibrous membrane, the fabricated nanofibrous membrane showed high sensitivity and selectivity for glucose detection. In addition, the PVA/GQD nanofibrous membrane can also be directly electrospun onto an electrode for electrochemical detection of H2O2. This novel nanofibrous membrane exhibits excellent catalytic performance and fluorescence activity, and therefore has potential applications for the highly stable, sensitive, and selective detection of H2O2 and glucose.

Abstract:Abnormal levels of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) in the human body are valuable indicators for monitoring human health, as they are associated with certain diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to develop sensitive and simultaneous analytical techniques for DA and UA in diagnosing the related diseases. Herein, the Co- and Mo- doped carbon nanofibers (Co, Mo@CNFs) electrochemical biosensor was developed successfully for the sensitive and accurate simultaneous detection of DA and UA. A straightforward electrospinning technique followed by a carbonization process was employed for the synthesis of Co, Mo@CNFs, and the encapsulation of Co and Mo within CNFs served to not only prevent nanoparticle agglomeration, thus providing more active sites, but also to facilitate rapid electron transfer. By incorporating Co and Mo into CNFs, the electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode was greatly improved due to the beneficial conductivity and synergistic effects of transition metals. This enhancement effectively addressed issues such as the overlapping anodic peaks that occur when DA and UA are oxidized concurrently. Due to the mentioned synergistic contributions, the modified Co, Mo@CNFs electrode (Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE) achieved remarkable sensitivity for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA, while also exhibiting strong anti-interference ability. The detection limits for DA and UA were 2.35 nmol L-1 and 0.16 μmol L-1, respectively. We applied the developed Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE electrochemical biosensor to detect DA and UA in 50-fold diluted serum and urine samples. The results affirm the biosensor's reliability and precision. Moreover, the developed Co, Mo@CNFs/GCE biosensor demonstrated excellent performance in simultaneously detecting DA and UA, providing an efficient and dependable detection approach for clinical diagnosis and bioanalysis.

Abstract:In this study, we present an electrochemical sensor with superior sensitivity and selectivity for dopamine (DA) detection. The sensor was created using a nanocomposite of iron-iron carbide nanoparticles decorated with carbon nanotubes (Fe-Fe 3 C@CNTs) to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The Fe-Fe 3 C@CNTs nanocomposite can be synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted synthesis method with just adopting ferrocene and carbon fiber as raw material and heat source, respectively. The electron microscopy (EM) results indicate that the Fe-Fe 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated with graphitic layer were decorated with CNTs. An investigation of the electrochemical responses of the Fe-Fe 3 C@CNTs/GCE sensor to DA was performed using both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Notably, in ideal experimental settings, the sensor demonstrated a minimal limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 μM within a range of linearity from 0.05 to 40 μM, even under a high concentration of uric acid (UA) interference. Moreover, the utility of the produced Fe-Fe 3 C@CNTs/GCE sensor was further validated through successful DA testing in urine samples of human.

Engineering FeOOH/Fe2O3@Carbon Interfaces with Biomass‐Derived Carbon Nanodot/Iron Colloids for Efficient Redox‐Modulated Dopamine Voltammetric Detection

Abstract:The Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couple is effective for voltammetric detection of trace dopamine (DA). However, achieving adequate concentrations with high electroactive surface area (ECSA), DA affinity, and fast interfacial charge transfer is challenging. Consequently, most reported Fe‐based sensors have a high nanomolar range detection limit (LOD). Herein, we address these limitations by manipulating the phase and morphology of FeOOH/Fe2O3 heterojunctions anchored on sp2‐carbon. FeOOH/Fe2O3 is synthesized by variable temperature aging of unique Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2‐carbon colloidal nanoparticles, which form via chelation between biomass‐derived carbon nanodots (CNDs) and Fe2+ ions. At 27°C and 120°C, Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2‐carbon transforms into β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanoparticles and α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheet, respectively. The β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 interface exhibits higher eg orbital electron occupancy than α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3, thereby facilitating oxygen adsorption and the generation of Fe2+/Fe3+ sites near the polarization potential of DA. This facilitates interfacial electron transfer between Fe3+ and DA. Moreover, its nanoparticle morphology enhances ECSA and DA adsorption compared to α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheets. With a LOD of ~3.11 nM, β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 surpasses the lower threshold in humans (~10 nM) and matches noble‐metal sensors. Furthermore, it exhibits selective detection of DA over 10 biochemicals in urine. Therefore, the β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3@sp2‐C platform holds promise as a low‐cost, easy‐to‐synthesize, and practical voltammetric DA monitor.

Interfacial galvanic replacement strategy for Pd-doped NiFe MOF nanosheets with highly efficient dopamine detection

Abstract:An interfacial galvanic replacement strategy to controllable synthesize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs)-modified NiFe MOF nanocomposite on nickel foam, which served as an efficient sensing platform for quantitative determination of dopamine (DA). Pd NPs grown in situ on the nanosheets of NiFe MOF via self-driven galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) and well uniform distribution was achieved. This method effectively reduced the aggregation of metallic nanoparticles and significantly promoted the electron transfer rate during the electrochemical process, leading to improved electrocatalytic activity for DA oxidation. Remarkably, the precisely constructed biosensor achieved a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.068 µM and recovery of 94.1% (RSD 6.7%, N = 3) for simulated real sample detection and also exhibited superior selectivity and stability. The results confirmed that the as-fabricated Pd-NiFe/NF composite electrode could realize the quantitative determination of DA and showed promising prospects in real sample biosensing.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a cost-effective and flexible technology for producing nanofibers with large specific surface areas, functionalized surfaces, and stable structures. In recent years, electrospun nanofibers have attracted more and more attention in electrochemical biosensors due to their excellent morphological and structural properties. This review outlines the principle of electrospinning technology. The strategies of producing nanofibers with different diameters, morphologies, and structures are discussed to understand the regulation rules of nanofiber morphology and structure. The application of electrospun nanofibers in electrochemical biosensors is reviewed in detail. In addition, we look towards the future prospects of electrospinning technology and the challenge of scale production.

Abstract:The development of electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity for the simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) is urgently desirable in clinical medicine. However, the challenge lies in achieving simultaneous detection due to their closely oxidation potentials. In this work, we present the synthesis of a composite material comprised of in-situ grown TiO2 nanowires (NWs) on a Ti3C2T x substrate (Ti3C2T x /TiO2 NWs) through a facile alkali process. By modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with Ti3C2T x /TiO2 NWs (Ti3C2T x /TiO2 NWs/GCE), it showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the simultaneous detection of AA/DA/UA by regulating the surface functional groups of Ti3C2T x . Remarkably, the Ti3C2T x /TiO2 NWs/GCE enabled simultaneous detection of AA in the range of 300–1800 μM, DA in the range of 2–33 μM, and UA in the range of 2–33 μM. The limits of detection (LODs) for AA, DA, and UA were estimated as 6.61 μM, 0.093 μM, and 0.038 μM, respectively. The proposed Ti3C2T x /TiO2 NWs/GCE demonstrated good stability, high selectivity, reliable reproducibility and satisfactory recovery results in real samples, making it a promising electrochemical sensor for the detection of AA, DA, and UA. This work offers a new perspective for human health monitoring, paving the way for advancements in this field.

Abstract:A novel sensing system was constructed by biomass carbon/MOF-derived Co3O4/FeCo2O4 (BC/Co3O4/FeCo2O4) composite decorated with glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for exploiting to determine dopamine (DA), acetaminophen (AC), and xanthine (XA) simultaneously. The BC/Co3O4/FeCo2O4 composite was synthesized via a facile in-situ growth process and calcination treatment, coupled with hydrothermal reaction. This composite could appreciably enlarge the electrochemically active surface area of as-prepared sensor to promote electron transfer resulting in enhanced response signals. Applying BC/Co3O4/FeCo2O4/GCE sensor under the optimum conditions, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) current responses vs. concentration are linear in the wider ranges of 0.1–250 μM, 0.1–220 μM, and 0.5–280 μM, along with low detection limits (LOD, S/N = 3) of 0.04587 μM, 0.02886 μM, and 0.1209 μM for DA, AC and XA correspondingly. Moreover, the proposed sensor exhibited a satisfying selectivity, stability and reproducibility as well. Finally, this sensor had been utilized to detect DA, AC and XA successfully in real samples with satisfactorily apparent recoveries, providing a promising application for further sensing analysis.

Abstract:Fabrication of multifunctional nanocomposites that are simultaneously magnetic, stable, and biocompatible is critical for their application in bioanalysis but remains a challenge. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 @C–Au nanocomposites were prepared by a rapid microwave-hydrothermal procedure followed by the layer-by-layer assembly for this intention. The morphologies, composition, phase structures, and magnetic properties of the nanocomposites were well-characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and superconducting quantum interference device. The nanocomposites have the sizes of about 200 nm in diameter. They integrate the advantages of the satisfactory stability of carbon shell, the good biocompatibility and conductivity of Au nanoparticles as well as the excellent magnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 core. Furthermore, a novel biosensor based on the multifunctional nanocomposites was fabricated after the immobilization of hemoglobin and the direct electrochemistry was studied. The proposed biosensor exhibits wide linear range, high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and stability. The presented multifunctional nanocomposites provide an alternative and effective matrix for the direct electrochemistry of proteins and might have potential applications in biosensing and drug delivery.
