Abstract:Biomass materials are regarded as ideal precursors for activated carbon owing to their unique structure. Here, a novel hierarchical carbon with a high surface area (2742 m2 g−1) and pore volume (1.528 cm3 g−1) is prepared from cashew nut husk biomass waste by a simple chemical activation. The as-obtained carbon is further assembled into electrodes and analyzed. In a three-electrode system, an optimal sample exhibits superior capacitive performance (305.2 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and rate capability (256 F g−1 at 20 A g−1). Furthermore, a coin-type symmetric supercapacitor made from the optimal carbon sample exhibits a high energy density of 11.2 Wh kg−1 at 400 W kg−1, as well as excellent long-term cycling retention with 97.1% of the capacity being retained after 4000 charge-discharge cycles. Our work demonstrates that the porous carbon obtained from activated cashew nut husks presents great potential in the energy storage field.

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their low cost, wide availability, rich pore structures, and good stability. Different biomass-derived porous carbon materials have variations in compositions and structures, resulting in different electrochemical performances. Here, four types of biomass-derived porous carbon materials, namely corn stalk-derived porous carbon (CC), bamboo-derived porous carbon, peanut shell-derived porous carbon and rice straw-derived porous carbon, were prepared using raw materials such as corn stalk powders, bamboo powders, peanut shell powders and rice straw powders, respectively. The preparation process was carried out through high-temperature carbonization and activation methods. The prepared carbon electrode samples were characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM and BET, and the three-electrode performances and the assembled symmetric supercapacitors were also investigated by a series of electrochemical testing techniques. The results indicate that among the four biomass-derived porous carbon materials, CC exhibits the best electrochemical performances, and the specific capacitance is 103 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 . The assembled symmetric supercapacitors demonstrate a specific capacitance of 99 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , a specific mass power density of 25 W kg −1 and a specific mass-energy density of 3.44 Wh kg −1 . After 20,000 cycles, the capacitance retention rate remains at 104%, which shows an increase. Therefore, the electrode samples prepared from corn stalk-derived porous carbon exhibit high specific energy, high specific power and long cycle life and have promising prospects for development in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Catalytic graphitization opens a route to prepare graphitic carbon under fairly mild conditions. Biomass has been identified as a potentially attractive precursor for graphitic carbon materials. In this work, corn starch was used as carbon source to prepare hollow graphitic carbon microspheres by pyrolysis after mixing impregnation with nitrate salts, and the surface of these carbon microspheres is covered with controllable pores structure. Under optimal synthesis conditions, the prepared carbon microspheres show a uniform pore size distribution and high degree of graphitization. When tested as electrode materials for supercapacitor with organic electrolyte, the electrode exhibited a superior specific capacitance of 144.8 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , as well as large power density and a capacitance retention rate of 93.5% after 1,000 cycles in galvanostatic charge/discharge test at 1.0 A g −1 . The synthesis extends use of the renewable nature resources and sheds light on developing new routes to design graphitic carbon microspheres.

Abstract:Fabricating electrically conductive porous electrode for supercapacitors from abundant raw materials remains a significant challenge in the field of energy storage. 3D porous carbon with high surface areas was synthesized by high-temperature carbonization and activation of lignin from cornstalks. When used as electrode materials in supercapacitors they showed a specific capacitance of 280 F g−1 and an area-specific capacitance of 1.3 F cm−2 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. An assembled symmetric supercapacitor showed a high energy density of 7.7 Wh kg−1 at power density of 5200 W kg−1. It is demonstrated here that the use of lignin waste to fabricate electrode materials is feasible, affording lignin new value-added utilization.

Abstract:Porous carbon has attracted enormous attentions as electrode materials for supercapacitor due to its sufficient porosity and large specific surface area. In this paper, we reported a convenient approach for the preparation of activated porous carbon (APC) by one-step activation method using bacterial cellulose as carbon source and potassium gluconate as activator. The obtained porous carbon possesses a unique porous framework with suitable specific surface area and rich oxygen content. Benefiting from the unique structure, the obtained electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 437 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and excellent electrochemical stability. More interestingly, the constructed APC-700//APC-700 symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 23.5 Wh kg −1 and good cycling stability in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolyte. Therefore, the work provides a new and facile method to prepare porous carbon-based electrode materials from biomass for supercapacitor.

Abstract:Conversion of Biomass into porous carbon with high yield is a huge challenge due to the consumption of plentiful carbon during pore-forming. Here, we employ the biomass materials as the activation agent to circumvent the excessive etching effect of the conventional chemical reagent. Both green activation agent and raw material are converted into porous carbon, which results in ultrahigh yield (even more than 100%). Furthermore, the biomass activation agent with abundant metal elements not only contributes to pore-forming but also achieves heteroatom doping. The obtained N-doped hierarchical porous carbon presented good capacitive capability (150.1 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1) and high rate performance (∼61% of capacitance retention from 0.2 to 50 A g−1). The green activation process achieves both the increase of yield and excellent capacitive properties for the first time. The green strategy proposed in this work for producing porous carbon with high yield provides a new consideration on comprehensive utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:Exploring renewable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly electrode materials with high adsorption, fast ions/electrons transports and tunable surface chemistry are urgently needed for the development of next-generation biocompatible energy-storage devices. In recent years, biomass-derived carbon electrode materials for energy storage have attracted a great deal of attention because of their widespread availability, renewable nature and low cost. More importantly, their inborn uniform and precise biological structures can be utilized as the templates for fabricating electrode materials with controlled and well-defined geometries. Meanwhile, the basic elements of biomass are carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus. The speical naturally ordered hierarchical structures as well as abundant surface properties of biomass-derived carbon materials can be well compatible with electrochemical reaction process, such as ions transfer and diffusion. To date, a series of novel porous carbon materials with different dimensionalities have been made by various methods using biomass as raw material, which is an important field in the fabrication of supercapacitor electrode materials. Herein, we summarize the recent reported biomass-derived carbon materials with 1-Dimension, 2-Dimension to 3-Dimension and their applications as carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitors. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of carbon-based electrode materials on the supercapacitor's performance are closely highlighted.

Abstract:Owing to the environmental friendliness, renewability, and biodegradability of biomass, tremendous efforts have been devoted to use them as promising carbon precursors in sustainable energy storage devices. Biomass-based porous graphitic carbon (BPGC), possessing both large specific surface area and good conductivity, has received particular attention as an electrode material in supercapacitors. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress toward the preparation methods of BPGC, which include activation, catalytic graphitization, and simultaneous activation–graphitization, and special attention is given to the mechanisms of structure evolution during activation and graphitization. The review also presents the advances for optimizing and restructuring the microstructure of BPGC from 0D to 3D. Besides, structure–performance correlation of BPGC for supercapacitor is presented and discussed. Furthermore, insights into challenges and opportunities for the further development of BPGC for energy storage are pointed out. Overall, this review will not only help researchers choose appropriate method to construct BPGC, but also open various directions to optimize ions and electrons transport for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Porous carbons are considered as promising electrode materials for electrical double layer capacitors due to their high surface area, abundant pores and high conductivity. However, the preparation of porous carbons with controlled morphology and graphitization degree is still a challenge, since the structure of the precursor tends to collapse and the amorphous carbon tends to form during the synthesis process. Herein, an efficient ball milling-assisted method for the preparation of porous carbons with controlled morphology and graphitization degree is developed. The results show that the amount of FeCl3·6H2O determines the morphologies, graphitization degree and yield of porous carbons. The as-prepared porous carbon exhibits a superior specific capacitance of 168 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a good cycling stability of a 94.7% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles when used as supercapacitor electrode materials. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the high surface area (992 m2 g−1) and rich micropores, which can supply more active sites and ensure high specific capacitance. The abundant mesopores and high graphitization degree can accelerate the electron transfer and the ion diffusion within the electrodes. In addition, the thin sheets can also shorten the ion diffusion and electron transfer length.

Abstract:In contemporary society, the conversion and efficient utilization of waste biomass and its derivatives are of great significance. Carbonized wood (CW) is an easily accessible and cost-effective green resource, but it has limitations as an electrode material due to its low specific surface area, limited active sites and poor conductivity. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the performance of biomass-based materials by using activation, heteroatom doping and modification methods to enhance the specific surface area and active sites. In this study, we developed acid-modified urea-doped activated carbonized wood (AUACW) with a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure and porosity, achieving a high specific surface area of 1321.3 m2 g-1. In addition, the degree of graphitization (ID/IG = 1.0) provides good conductivity and a large number of active sites, which are conducive to charge transfer and ion diffusion. The increase of nitrogen and oxygen elements enhances the surface wettability of the material and provides additional pseudocapacitance. The specific capacitance of AUACW reaches 435.84 F g-1 at 0.8 A g-1 with a 93.6% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. More attractively, a symmetrical supercapacitor (SSC) based on AUACW delivers an energy density of 22.61 W h kg-1 at a power density of 533.26 W kg-1. This work demonstrates the promising potential of utilizing waste biomass to develop green and valuable carbon materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Biomass-based interconnected porous carbon is not only inexpensive and eco-friendly, but also has the characteristics of a large specific surface area and multiple heteroatom co-doping, making it prominent in the energy storage device field. This work reports a simple method to fabricate N, P, and S co-doped interconnected porous carbon from bamboo pulp fiber by one-step pyrolysis method with NaOH/thiourea aqueous and melamine phosphate. In this reaction system, NaOH/thiourea is an activator and a solvent for bamboo pulp fiber, thiourea is the dopant of nitrogen and sulfur, and melamine phosphate is the dopant of nitrogen and phosphorus. The synergistic effect of NaOH/thiourea and melamine phosphate under freezing conditions contributed to increasing the specific surface area, mesoporosity, degree of graphitization, and heteroatom doping of porous carbon, thereby improving its electrochemical behavior. The synthesized porous carbon exhibits interconnected loose structure, huge specific surface area, extremely high mesoporosity (98.26%) and N (3.78 at%), P (0.32 at%), and S (3.36 at%) co-doping characteristics. As a supercapacitor electrode, it presents a specific capacitance (316 F⋅g −1 ) at a current density of 1 A⋅g −1 . After assembly into a symmetrical supercapacitor, it has a high energy density (16.3 Wh⋅kg −1 ) at a power density of 489.0 W⋅kg −1 , and an excellent cycling stability (91.2% capacitance retention after 5 000 cycles in 6 M KOH). In addition, this work aims to find a novel sustainable approach of using renewable biomass to produce high performance electrode materials to meet the need of different energy storage applications.

Abstract:In this report, a hierarchical porous activated carbon material with interconnected micro-meso-macro pores was prepared and studied with biomass waste as the starting point and transformation into high-value materials as the destination. Based on biomass hazelnut shell, a porous carbon material with a large specific surface area (3374 m2 g−1), rich pore structure, and suitable nitrogen content is constructed with polypyrrole as nitrogen source and KOH as the activator. Because of its unique pore structure, large specific surface area, and suitable nitrogen content, the prepared material as supercapacitor electrodes showed excellent capacitive performance (334 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), good rate capacity, and cycle stability. The experimental results show that the introduced nitrogen-containing functional groups endow the material with large pseudo-capacitance, which is conducive to increasing the specific capacitance. In addition, the symmetrical supercapacitor devices assembled on the basis of the material also showed excellent performance with an energy density of 11.4 W h kg−1 at a power density of 300.4 W kg−1. This synthetic strategy shows that the preparation of high-value electrode materials from biomass waste is promising.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass such as plants and agricultural waste are ideal to tackle the current energy crisis and energy-related environmental issues. Carbon-rich lignin is abundant in lignocellulosic biomass, whose high-value transformation and utilization has been the most urgent problem to be solved. Herein, we propose a method for the preparation of porous carbon from lignin employing an H 3 PO 4 -assisted hydrothermal method. We characterize the as-prepared lignin-derived porous carbon and investigate its potential for energy storage. After assisted hydrothermal treatment followed by carbonization at 800 °C, the lignin-derived porous carbon displays a high specific capacitance (223.6 F·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 ) and excellent cycling ability with good capacitance retention. In this present study, the resultant lignin-derived porous carbon was used as the electrode of a supercapacitor, illustrating yet another potential high-value use for lignin, namely as a candidate for the sustainable fabrication of main supercapacitor components.

Abstract:As the green and renewable material, biomass-based carbon is one of the prospective electrode materials for supercapacitors. Limited by the microstructure and compositions, the activation of biomass-based materials is challenging for enhancing the performance of supercapacitors. Herein, a series of porous carbon based supercapacitor electrode materials have been synthesized through pyrolysis combining with KOH activation using the biomass wastes soybean pods as resources. Theoretical calculation results proved that N-doping can improve the conductivity and K+ adsorption capacity, which can further improve the capacitive performance of carbon materials. O and N co-doped porous carbon with the optimal ratio of KOH and operation temperature showed a large specific surface area (SSA) of 1807.56 m2 g-1, with a large capacitance of 366.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and great rate capability of 65.6% capacitance retention at 100 A g-1 (240 F g-1). In addition, the all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor assembled by O and N co-doped porous carbon exhibits an energy density of 8.34 Wh kg-1 at 247.95 W kg-1 with excellent cycling stability of 96.03% capacity retention over 50 000 cycles. This work provides a new approach for the synthesis of the biomass-based carbon materials, which can be used for energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. As the low-cost, natural multi-component for elemental doping and environment-friendly characteristics, biomass-derived porous carbon for energy storage attracts intense attention. Herein, walnut shells-based porous carbon has been obtained through carbonization, hydrothermal and activation treatment. The corresponding porous carbon owns superior electrochemical performances with specific capacitance reaching up to 462[math]F[math]g[math] at 1[math]A[math]g[math], and shows excellent cycling stability (5000 cycles, [math]94.2% of capacitance retention at 10[math]A[math]g[math]). Moreover, the symmetry supercapacitor achieves high specific capacitance (197[math]F[math]g[math] at 1[math]A[math]g[math]), relevant electrochemical cycling stability (5000 cycles, 89.2% of capacitance retention at 5[math]A[math]g[math]) and high power/energy density (42.8[math]W[math]h[math]kg[math] at 1249[math]W[math]kg[math]). Therefore, the facile synthesis approach and superb electrochemical performance ensure that the walnut shells-derived porous carbon is a promising electrode material candidate for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Developing high-performance electrode by use of abundant natural materials as sustainable precursors is extremely important for promoting the practical application of supercapacitors. Herein, we present a promising strategy to convert biomass, sorghum seeds (SS), into efficient electrode material through pre-carbonization and combined KOH/melamine chemical activation. The derived electrode material possesses ultrahigh specific surface area (2132.1 m2 g−1), abundant hierarchical pores, and rich N, O doping, which are very beneficial for energy storage. Typically, the as-prepared carbon displays a high specific capacitance of 536.7 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 in 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte in a three-electrode system. The assembled symmetric supercapacitors offer excellent cycling stability (97.6% retention after 15,000 cycles) and high specific energy (13.8 Wh kg−1 at specific power of 298.0 W kg−1). The study provides a facile, sustainable, and eco-friendly approach to produce hierarchical porous carbon from biomass for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:The synthesis and application of biomass-derived carbon in energy storage have drawn increasing research attention due to the ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of the meso/microporous carbon produced from various biological precursors, including plants, fruits, microorganisms, and animals. Compared to the artificial nanostructured carbons, such as fullerene, carbon nanotube and graphene, the biomass-derived carbons may obtain superior capacitance, rate performance and stability in supercapacitor applications ascribing to their intrinsic nanoporous and hierarchical structures. However, challenges remain in processing techniques to obtain biomass-derived carbons with high carbon yield, high energy density, and controllable graphitic microstructures, which may require a clear understanding over the chemical and elemental compositions, and the intrinsic microstructural characteristics of the biological precursors. Herein we present comprehensive analyses over the impacts of the chemical and elemental compositions of the precursors on the carbon yield of the biomass, as well as the mechanism of chemical activation on the nanoporous structure development of the biomass-derived carbons. The structure–property relationship and functional performance of various biomass-derived carbons for supercapacitor applications are also discussed in detail and compared. Finally, useful insights are also provided for the improvements of biomass-derived carbons in supercapacitor applications.
