Abstract:Premise: Flowering phenology strongly influences reproductive success in plants. Days to first flower is easy to quantify and widely used to characterize phenology, but reproductive fitness depends on the full schedule of flower production over time. Methods: We examined floral display traits associated with rapid adaptive evolution and range expansion among thirteen populations of Lythrum salicaria, sampled along a 10-degree latitudinal gradient in eastern North America. We grew these collections in a common garden field experiment at a mid-latitude site and quantified variation in flowering schedule shape using Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) and quantitative metrics analogous to central moments of probability distributions (i.e., mean, variance, skew, and kurtosis). Key Results: Consistent with earlier evidence for adaptation to shorter growing seasons, we found that populations from higher latitudes had earlier start and mean flowering day, on average, when compared to populations from southern latitudes. Flowering skew increased with latitude whereas kurtosis decreased, consistent with a bet-hedging strategy in biotic environments with more herbivores and greater competition for pollinators. Conclusions: Heritable clines in flowering schedules are consistent with adaptive evolution in response to a predicted shift toward weaker biotic interactions and less variable but more stressful abiotic environments at higher latitudes, potentially contributing to rapid evolution and range expansion of this invasive species.

Abstract:<p>Natural selection by pollinators is an important factor in the morphological diversity and adaptive radiation of flowering plants. Selection by similar pollinators in unrelated plants leads to convergence in floral morphology, or "floral syndromes." Previous investigations into floral syndromes have mostly studied relatively small and/or simple systems; emphasizing vertebrate‐pollination. Despite the importance of multiple floral traits in plant‐pollinator interactions, these studies have examined few quantitative traits, so their co‐variation and phenotypic integration have been underexplored. To gain better insights into pollinator‐trait dynamics, we investigate the model system of the phlox family (Polemoniaceae), a clade of ∼ 400 species pollinated by a diversity of vectors. Using a comprehensive phylogeny and large dataset of traits and observations of pollinators, we reconstruct ancestral pollination system; accounting for the temporal history of pollinators. We conduct phylogenetically controlled analyses of trait co‐variation and association with pollinators, integrating many analyses over phylogenetic uncertainty. Pollinator shifts are more heterogeneous than previously hypothesized. The evolution of floral traits is partially constrained by phylogenetic history and trait co‐variation, but traits are convergent and differences are associated with different pollinators. Trait shifts are usually gradual, rather than rapid, suggesting complex genetic and ecological interactions of flowers at macroevolutionary scales.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Shift from bird to butterfly pollination in Clivia (Amaryllidaceae)

Abstract:Premise of the study: Pollinator shifts have been implicated as a driver of divergence in angiosperms. We tested the hypothesis that there was a transition from bird- to butterfly pollination in the African genus Clivia (Amaryllidaceae) and investigated how floral traits may have been either modified or retained during this transition. Methods: We identified pollinators using field observations, correlations between lepidopteran wing scales and pollen on stigmas, and single-visit and selective exclusion experiments. We also quantified floral rewards and advertising traits. Key results: The upright trumpet-shaped flowers of C. miniata were found to be pollinated effectively by swallowtail butterflies during both nectar-feeding and brush visits. These butterflies transfer pollen on their wings, as evidenced by positive correlations between wing scales and pollen loads on stigmas. All other Clivia species have narrow pendulous flowers that are visited by sunbirds. Selective exclusion of birds and large butterflies from flowers of two Clivia species resulted in a significant decline in seed production. Conclusions: From the distribution of pollination systems on available phylogenies, it is apparent that a shift took place from bird- to butterfly pollination in Clivia. This shift was accompanied by the evolution of trumpet-shaped flowers, smaller nectar volume, and emission of scent, while flower color and nectar chemistry do not appear to have been substantially modified. These results are consistent with the idea that pollinator shifts can explain major floral modifications during plant diversification.
Phenotypic selection patterns in a hybrid zone between two Calceolaria species with contrasting pollinators: insights from field surveys and fitness assessments

Abstract:Summary Hybrid zones provide natural experimental settings to test hypotheses about species divergence. We concentrated on a hybrid swarm in which oil‐collecting bees and flower‐pecking birds act as pollinators of two Calceolaria species. We asked whether both pollinators contributed to flower divergence by differentially promoting prezygotic fitness at the phenotypic extremes that represent parentals. We studied pollinator‐mediated selection on phenotypic traits critical in plant–pollinator mechanical interaction, namely plant height, reward‐to‐stigma distance, and flower shape. We utilised the quantity and quality of pollen deposited as fitness measures and distinguished between the contribution of the two pollinator types. Results showed uni‐ and bivariate disruptive selection for most traits through pollen grains deposited by both pollinators. Bird‐mediated fitness favoured low plants with a long reward‐to‐stigma distance and a straight corolla, while bee‐mediated fitness favoured tall plants with a short reward‐to‐stigma distance and curved corolla. In addition, stabilising selection at one end of the phenotypic range showed a bird‐mediated reproductive asymmetry within the swarm. The disruptive pattern was countered, albeit weakly, by hybrids receiving higher‐quality pollen on the stigmas. Results suggest that pollinator‐mediated selection promotes divergence of integrated flower phenotypes mechanically adjusted either to bees or birds underscoring the importance of pollinator specialisation in diversification.

Abstract:Summary Plants can evolve rapidly after pollinator changes, but the response of different floral traits to novel selection can vary. Floral morphology is often expected to show high integration to maintain pollination accuracy, while nectar traits can be more environmentally sensitive. The relative role of genetic correlations and phenotypic plasticity (PP) in floral evolution remains unclear, particularly for nectar traits, and can be studied in the context of recent pollinator changes. Digitalis purpurea shows rapid recent evolution of corolla morphology but not nectar traits following a range expansion with hummingbirds added as pollinators. We use this species to compare PP, heritability, evolvability and integration of floral morphology and nectar in a common garden. Morphological traits showed higher heritability than nectar traits, and the proximal section of the corolla, which regulates access to nectar and underwent rapid change in introduced populations, presented lower integration than the rest of the floral phenotype. Nectar was more plastic than morphology, driven by highly plastic sugar concentration. Nectar production rate showed high potential to respond to selection. These results explain the differential rapid evolution of floral traits previously observed in this species and show how intrafloral modularity determines variable evolutionary potential in morphological and nectar traits.

Abstract:The burgeoning of phylogenetic information during the past 15 years has focused much interest on whether specific features of clades enhance or hinder the evolution of species diversity. In the angiosperms many of the traits thought to affect clade diversity are floral in nature, because of their association with reproduction and thus species isolation. Therefore, we briefly review mechanisms by which floral traits can affect diversification. We then consider the possible influences of four specific traits by comparing the species diversity of a clade possessing a trait with that of its sister clade that lacks the trait. Clearly, this approach requires correct identification of sister groups, so that changes in phylogenetic reconstruction can have profound effects on these analyses. Here we use a recent supertree analysis of the angiosperms, which includes nearly all described families, along with other phylogenies to reexamine a number of floral traits thought to affect diversification rates. In addition, because many of the previous analyses employed a statistical test that has since been shown to be misleading, we use a suite of signed-rank tests to assess associations with diversification. We find statistical support for the positive effect of animal pollination and floral nectar spurs and a negative effect of dioecious sexual system on diversification, as proposed previously. However, our results for the effect of bilaterally symmetric flowers on species diversity are equivocal. We discuss several factors that will aid in future analyses and the need for both more detailed phylogenetic analyses and more studies on floral biology.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Morphological matching between flower and pollinator traits has been documented in diverse plant lineages. Indeed, the matching of corolla tube length and pollinator tongue length has been cited repeatedly as a classic case of coevolution. However, there are many possible evolutionary routes to trait matching. Our aim here is both to review the evolutionary mechanisms of plantâpollinator trait matching and to investigate a specific case of trait matching/mismatching in a genus of alpine gingers. Methods Roscoea gingers with long corolla tubes in the western Himalayas have pollinators with correspondingly long tongues, but the match between corolla tube and pollinator tongue lengths is not seen in the eastern Himalayas. Six floral traits were measured, including corolla tube depth, an internal trait controlling pollinator access to nectar. We calculated coefficients of variation and phylogenetically controlled correlation patterns of these traits in six Roscoea species in order to gain possible insights into stabilizing selection and modularization of these traits. Key Results The distal (nectar-containing) portion of the corolla tube exhibited lower coefficients of variations than did the basal portion. This is consistent with the hypothesis that pollinators mediate stabilizing selection on the distal, but not basal, portion of the corolla tube. This result, combined with phylogenetic data, suggests that the elevated liquid level of nectar in the distal tube evolved subsequent to dispersal into the eastern Himalayan region and loss of long-tongue pollinators. After accounting for phylogeny, corolla tube length, anther length, style length and labellum width were all intercorrelated. Corolla-tube depth was not part of this covariational module, however, suggesting separate adaptation to short-tongued pollinators. Conclusions The reduction in functional corolla tube depth in the Roscoea appears to be related to the loss of long-tongued pollinators associated with dispersal to the eastern Himalayas and pollination by short-tongued pollinators. The apparent mismatch between floral tubes and pollinator tongues is a case of cryptic trait matching between flowers and pollinators, underscoring the importance of combining floral anatomy with pollination ecology in assessing plantâpollinator trait matching.

Abstract:Premise Flower phenotypes evolve to attract pollinators and to ensure efficient pollen transfer to and from the bodies of pollinators or, in self‐compatible bisexual flowers, between anthers and stigmas. If functionally interacting traits are genetically correlated, response to selection may be subject to genetic constraints. Genetic constraints can be assessed by quantifying standing genetic variation in (multivariate) phenotypic traits and by asking how much the available variation is reduced under specific assumptions about phenotypic selection on functionally interacting and genetically correlated traits. Methods We evaluated multivariate evolvability and potential genetic constraints underlying the evolution of the three‐dimensional structure of Dalechampia blossoms. First, we used data from a greenhouse crossing design to estimate the G matrix for traits representing the relative positions of male and female sexual organs (anthers and stigmas) and used the G matrix to ask how genetic variation is distributed in multivariate space. To assess the evolutionary importance of genetic constraints, we related standing genetic variation across phenotypic space to evolutionary divergence of population and species in the same phenotypic directions. Results Evolvabilities varied substantially across phenotype space, suggesting that certain traits or trait combinations may be subject to strong genetic constraint. Traits involved functionally in flower‐pollinator fit and autonomous selfing exhibited considerable independent evolutionary potential, but population and species divergence tended to occur in phenotypic directions associated with greater‐than‐average evolvability. Conclusions These results are consistent with the hypothesis that genetic constraints can hamper joint trait evolution towards optimum flower‐pollinator fit and optimum self‐pollination rates.
Complex floral traits shape pollinator attraction to ornamental plants

Abstract:Background and aims: Ornamental flowering plant species are often used in managed greenspaces to attract and support pollinator populations. In natural systems, selection by pollinators is hypothesized to result in convergent multimodal floral phenotypes that are more attractive to specific pollinator taxa. In contrast, ornamental cultivars are bred via artificial selection by humans, and exhibit diverse and distinct phenotypes. Despite their prevalence in managed habitats, the influence of cultivar phenotypic variation on plant attractiveness to pollinator taxa is not well resolved. Methods: We used a combination of field and behavioural assays to evaluate how variation in floral visual, chemical and nutritional traits impacted overall attractiveness and visitation by pollinator taxonomic groups and bee species to 25 cultivars of five herbaceous perennial ornamental plant genera. Key results: Despite significant phenotypic variation, cultivars tended to attract a broad range of pollinator species. Nonetheless, at the level of insect order (bee, fly, butterfly, beetle), attraction was generally modulated by traits consistent with the pollination syndrome hypothesis. At the level of bee species, the relative influence of traits on visitation varied across plant genera, with some floral phenotypes leading to a broadening of the visitor community, and others leading to exclusion of visitation by certain bee species. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate how pollinator choice is mediated by complex multimodal floral signals. Importantly, the traits that had the greatest and most consistent effect on regulating pollinator attraction were those that are commonly selected for in cultivar development. Though variation among cultivars in floral traits may limit the pollinator community by excluding certain species, it may also encourage interactions with generalist taxa to support pollinator diversity in managed landscapes.
Altered trait covariances between invasive and native ranges of a global plant invader

Abstract:1. Increasing evidence suggests that invasive populations adapt to the novel environments rapidly, and the ability of rapid adaptation depends on genetically‐based trait variation and covariation. However, few studies have investigated the trait covariance in the native and invasive ranges. Such investigation will give a more comprehensive picture of how historical contingency and adaptation shape invasiveness, contributing to the prediction of future invasion dynamics. 2. Here, we collected seven and nine populations alongside latitudes from invasive and native ranges of a global invasive plant, Spartina alterniflora, and planted them in two common gardens at the southernmost and northernmost sites of the invasive range. We measured plant traits, including the first flowering time, plant height, and seed set, and analyzed how these traits varied with garden sites and populations' origin latitudes and how their covariance changed between ranges. 3. We found that plants flowered later, grew taller, and set more seeds in the high‐latitude garden than the low‐latitude one. The growth and expression of genetic variation of traits appeared to be limited by high ambient temperature in the low‐latitude garden. In the high‐latitude garden, the flowering time of populations showed clinal variation for both invasive and native populations, whereas the plant height and seed set showed clinal variation only for native or invasive populations. From the native to the invasive range, the flowering time and seed set developed negative genetic covariance, and flowering time and plant height changed from negative genetically correlated to uncorrelated. 4. Our results suggested that S. alterniflora has experienced rapid adaptation to clinal and local conditions over the 40‐year invasion. Such geographic‐scale rapid adaptation appeared to have benefited from previously identified genetic admixture that has released the trait covariance. Our study highlights the importance of integrating full‐range geographical surveys with introduction history to understand the potential and mechanisms of trait evolution during invasion.

Abstract:Premise Strong elevational and latitudinal gradients allow the study of genetic differentiation in response to similar environmental changes. However, it is uncertain whether the environmental changes along the two types of gradients result in similar genetically based changes in quantitative traits. Peripheral arctic and alpine populations are thought to have less evolutionary potential than more central populations do. Methods We studied quantitative traits of the widespread Anthyllis vulneraria in a common garden. Plants originated from 20 populations along a 2000‐m elevational gradient from the lowlands to the elevational limit of the species in the Alps, and from 20 populations along a 2400‐km latitudinal gradient from the center of the distribution of the species in Central Europe to its northern distributional margin. Results Most traits showed similar clinal variations with elevation and latitude of origin, and the magnitude of all measured traits in relation to mean annual temperature was similar. Higher QST values than FST values in several traits indicated diversifying selection, but for others QST was smaller than FST. Genetic diversity of quantitative traits and neutral molecular markers was not correlated. Plasticity in response to favorable conditions declined with elevation and less strongly with latitude of origin, but the evolvability of traits did not. Conclusions The clinal variation suggests adaptive differentiation of quantitative traits along the two gradients. The evolutionary potential of peripheral populations is not necessarily reduced, but lower plasticity may threaten their survival under rapidly changing climatic conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Background Pollinators impose strong selection on floral traits. Indeed, pollinator syndromes are the result of these strong selective forces, but other abiotic and biotic agents also drive the evolution of floral traits and influence plant reproduction. Global change is expected to have widespread effects on biotic and abiotic systems resulting in novel selection on floral traits under future conditions. Scope Global change has depressed pollinator abundance and altered abiotic conditions, thereby exposing flowering plant species to novel suites of selective pressures. Here we consider how biotic and abiotic factors interact to shape the expression and evolution of various floral characteristics (the targets of selection), including floral size, color, physiology, reward quantity and quality, and longevity amongst other traits. We examine cases in which selection imposed by climatic factors conflicts with pollinator-mediated selection. Additionally, we explore how floral traits respond to environmental changes through phenotypic plasticity and how that can alter plant fecundity. In this review, we evaluate how global change may shift the expression and evolution of floral phenotypes. Conclusions Floral traits evolve in response to multiple interacting agents of selection. Different agents can sometimes exert conflicting selection. For example, pollinators often prefer large flowers, but drought stress can favor the evolution of smaller flowers, and the size of floral organs can evolve as a trade-off between selection mediated by these opposing actors. Nevertheless, few studies have factorially manipulated abiotic and biotic agents of selection to disentangle their relative strengths and directions of selection. The literature has more often evaluated plastic responses of floral traits to stressors than it has considered how abiotic factors alter selection on these traits. Furthermore, global change will likely alter the selective landscape through changes in the abundance and community compositions of mutualists and antagonists and novel abiotic conditions. We encourage future work to consider a more holistic model of floral evolution, which will enable more robust predictions about floral evolution and plant reproduction as global change progresses.

Is variation in flower shape and length among native and non-native populations of Nicotiana glauca a product of pollinator-mediated selection?

Abstract:Due to drastic changes in pollinators between native and invaded habitats, we might expect that pollinator-mediated selection on floral traits of alien plants differ from that in their native ranges. Here, through geometric morphometric tools and phenotypic selection analyses, we examined whether adaptation in flower shape and length occurred in Nicotiana glauca as a response to pollinator selection in contrasting pollination environments. We assessed populations of this plant species in the native range (South America), where plants depend on hummingbird pollination, and in two invaded areas, one where sunbirds act as pollinators (South Africa), and another where nectar feeding birds are absent and reproduction is entirely by autonomous self-pollination (Mallorca, Spain). Corolla length and shape varied significantly among pollination environments. Non-native sites were less variable and their range of variation fell within the native range of variation. Flower length in native populations and in a South African population matched the bill length of their respective pollinators. In contrast with the straight floral tubes in the native range, both non-native areas had significantly curved tubes. Curvature may improve the fit with the curved bills of sunbirds in South Africa (versus straight beaks of hummingbirds) and may enhance self-pollination in Mallorca, but this similarity between invaded areas may equally be due to drift and a shared colonization route. We found spatial variation in selection acting on corolla length but not on corolla shape. Overall, selection patterns were not consistent with floral trait variation. Although some results are consistent with both drift and selection, our study suggests that population divergence in flower shape and length is more likely the result of long-term diversifying pollinator-driven selection, which is difficult to detect by studying a single selection event.

Abstract:Abstract Intraspecific processes impact macroevolutionary patterns through individual variation, selection, and ecological specialization. According to the niche variation hypothesis, the broader ecological niche of generalist species results in an increased morphological variation among individuals either because they are constituted of diversified specialized individuals each exploiting a fraction of the species’ niche or because they are constituted of true generalist individuals that experience relaxed selection. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed the individual floral morphology of species of Antillean Gesneriaceae, a group that has transitioned between specialization for hummingbird pollination and generalization multiple times throughout its evolutionary history. We characterized the profiles of corollas using geometric morphometrics and compared the intraspecific shape variance of specialists and generalists in a phylogenetic context. We used three approaches that differently accounted for the high dimensionality of morphological traits, the ancestral reconstruction of pollination syndromes over time, and the error associated with the estimation of the intraspecific variance. Our findings provide partial support for the niche variation hypothesis. If considering the whole shape in the analysis corroborated this idea, decomposing the shape into principal components indicated that not all aspects of the corolla exhibit the same pattern of variation. Specifically, pollination generalists tend to display greater intraspecific variation than specialists in terms of tubularity, but not of curvature. Accounting for the error in the variance estimation also reduced the support for the hypothesis, suggesting that larger sample sizes may be required to reach stronger conclusions. This study emphasizes the reciprocal influence between plants and their pollinators on floral morphology at different biodiversity scales and suggests that ecological strategies of species can affect patterns of morphological variation at macroevolutionary scales.

Abstract:Populations expanding to new habitats may encounter novel selection regimes which can lead to ecotype formation. In the Alps, elevation corresponds to steep ecological gradients, along which ecotype formation has occurred in many species. The majority of alpine plant species are perennial and little is known about how selection acts across different stages of their life-cycles and how fitness trade-offs shape adaptive processes in perennials. We investigated how selection at opposite ends of elevational gradients has driven ecotype formation in , a perennial herb that expanded its ecological niche to low elevation habitats after the Last Glacial Maximum. Through a multi-year reciprocal transplant experiment including parental populations and recombinant crosses we assessed fitness under natural conditions and dissect how adaptation is mediated by different fitness components with inherent trade-offs, and pinpoint the contribution of growth and reproductive traits to this process. We show that the evolution of local adaptation proceeded by selection acting primarily through reproduction and survival at low and high elevation, respectively. At low elevation the primary contribution to adaptation was third year reproduction, concomitant with a left skewed age distribution. At high elevation the contribution to adaptation and the age distribution were more dispersed across the life cycle. We found that large, early flowering plants have a consistent fitness advantage. This was mediated by direct selection favoring large size through reproductive output at low elevation, and early flowering through the probability to produce seeds at high elevation. Our results indicate that the selection regime imposed by the warm low elevation habitat led to the evolution of an ecotype exhibiting a life-history strategy characterized by high investment in rapid growth and early reproduction. In contrast, the high elevation strategy favors high investment in self-maintenance. Our results suggest that weakening of a key fitness trade-off associated with resource allocation contributed to the evolution of distinct ecotypes in this perennial plant species.

Genetic Architecture of Flowering Time Differs Between Populations With Contrasting Demographic and Selective Histories

Abstract:Understanding the evolutionary factors that impact the genetic architecture of traits is a central goal of evolutionary genetics. Here, we investigate how quantitative trait variation accumulated over time in populations that colonized a novel environment. We compare the genetic architecture of flowering time in Arabidopsis populations from the drought-prone Cape Verde Islands and their closest outgroup population from North Africa. We find that trait polygenicity is severely reduced in the island populations compared to the continental North African population. Further, trait architectures and reconstructed allelic histories best fit a model of strong directional selection in the islands in accord with a Fisher-Orr adaptive walk. Consistent with this, we find that large-effect variants that disrupt major flowering time genes (FRI and FLC) arose first, followed by smaller effect variants, including ATX2 L125F, which is associated with a 4-day reduction in flowering time. The most recently arising flowering time-associated loci are not known to be directly involved in flowering time, consistent with an omnigenic signature developing as the population approaches its trait optimum. Surprisingly, we find no effect in the natural population of EDI-Cvi-0 (CRY2 V367M), an allele for which an effect was previously validated by introgression into a Eurasian line. Instead, our results suggest the previously observed effect of the EDI-Cvi-0 allele on flowering time likely depends on genetic background, due to an epistatic interaction. Altogether, our results provide an empirical example of the effects demographic history and selection has on trait architecture.
Floral traits and their connection with Pollinators and Climate

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Floral characteristics vary significantly among plant species, and multiple underlying factors govern this diversity. Although it is widely known that spatial variation in pollinator groups can exert selection on floral traits, the relative contribution of pollinators and climate to the variation of floral traits across large geographic areas remains a little-studied area. Besides furthering our conceptual understanding of these processes, gaining insight into the topic is also of conservation relevance: understanding how climate may drive floral traits variation can serve to protect plant-pollinator interactions under global change conditions. Methods We used Rhododendron as a model system and collected floral traits (corolla length, nectar volume and concentrations), floral visitors, and climatic data on 21 Rhododendron species across two continents (North America-Appalachians and Asia-Himalaya). Based on this we quantified the influence of climate and pollinators to floral traits using phylogeny-informed analyses. Key results Our results indicate that there is substantial variation in pollinators and morphological traits across Rhododendron species and continents. We came across four pollinator groups: birds, bees, butterflies, and flies. Asian species were commonly visited by birds, bees, and flies, while bees and butterflies were the most common visitors of North American species. The visitor identity explained nectar trait variation, with flowers visited by birds presenting higher volumes of dilute nectar and those visited by insects producing concentrated nectar. Nectar concentration and corolla length exhibited a strong phylogenetic signal across the analysed set of species. We also found that nectar trait variation in the Himalaya could also be explained by climate, which presented significant interactions with pollinator identity. Conclusions Our results indicate that both pollinators and climate contribute and interact to drive nectar trait variation, suggesting that both can affect pollination interactions and floral (and plant) evolution individually and interacting with each other.

Abstract:Abstract Premise Heterostyly, a genetic style polymorphism, is linked to symmetric pollen transfer, vital for its maintenance. Clonal growth typically impacts sexual reproduction by influencing pollen transfer. However, the floral morph variation remains poorly understood under the combined effects of pollinators and clonal growth in heterostyly characterized by negative frequency-dependent selection and disassortative mating. Methods We estimated morph ratios, ramets per genet, and heterostylous syndrome, and quantified legitimate pollen transfer via clonal growth, pollinators, and reciprocal herkogamy between floral morphs in Limonium otolepis, a fragmented population composed of five subpopulations in the desert environment of northwestern China, with small flower and large floral morph variation. Results All subpopulations but one exhibited pollen-stigma morphology dimorphism. The compatibility between mating types with different pollen-stigma morphologies remained consistent regardless of reciprocal herkogamy. Biased ratios and ramets per genet of the two mating types with distinct pollen-stigma morphologies caused asymmetric pollen flow and varying fruit sets in all subpopulations. Short-tongued insects were the primary pollinators due to small flower sizes. However, pollen-feeding Syrphidae sp. triggered asymmetry in pollen flow between high and low sex organs, with short-styled morphs having lower stigma pollen depositions and greater variation. Clonal growth amplified this variation by reducing intermorph pollen transfer. Conclusions Pollinators and clonal growth jointly drive floral morph variation. H-morphs with the same stigma-anther position and self-incompatibility, which mitigate the disadvantages of sunken low sex organs with differing from the classical homostyly, might arise from long- and short-styled morphs through a “relaxed selection”. This study is the first to uncover the occurrence of the H-morph and its associated influencing factors in a distylous plant featuring clonal growth, small flowers, and a fragmented population.

Abstract:Species traits greatly influence interactions between plants and pollinators where floral nectar is the primary energy source fostering this mutualism. However, very little is known about how nectar traits mediate interactions in pollination networks compared with morphological traits. Here, we evaluated the role of morphological and nectar traits in shaping plant–hummingbird interaction networks along an elevation gradient. For this, we assessed patterns in floral phenotypic traits and network properties of plant species across elevations in Costa Rica. We also analysed whether plant species with generalized flower traits are ecological generalists and how morphological trait matching versus nectar traits affect interactions. We found marked variation in floral phenotypic traits and flower abundance of hummingbird-visited plant species across 10 sites along the elevation gradient. We did not find evidence for a relationship between flower morphology and nectar traits or between morphological and ecological generalization of plant species. Plant–hummingbird interaction frequency increased when the lengths of hummingbird bill and flower corolla were similar, indicating morphological matching, whereas nectar traits were unrelated to interactions. While nectar may play a difficult-to-detect secondary role within plant–hummingbird networks, our results reinforce the idea that morphological matching is an important factor in structuring ecological communities.

Abstract:Divergent patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits can arise in response to interactions with functionally distinct pollinators. However, there are a limited number of studies that relate patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits to variation in local pollinator assemblages in pollination-generalized plant species. We studied phenotypic selection on floral traits of Viscaria vulgaris, a plant that interacts with a broad range of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators, and related divergence in phenotypic selection on floral traits to the expected level of divergence in local pollinator assemblages. We detected phenotypic selection on floral traits involved in the attraction of pollinators and the mechanics of pollen removal and deposition, and demonstrated that floral traits are subject to spatiotemporal variation in the strength and direction of phenotypic selection. We revealed that diurnal and nocturnal pollinators, when considered in isolation, mediated divergent patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits. Consistent with the Grant-Stebbins model, we observed that divergence in phenotypic selection on floral traits increased with the expected level of divergence in local pollinator assemblages. Thus, generalized plant-pollinator interactions can mediate phenotypic selection on floral traits, and distinct local pollinator assemblages can generate a geographic mosaic of divergent patterns of phenotypic selection. We underscore that these outcomes are not exclusive to specialized plant-pollinator interactions and can emerge at a local geographic scale.
