Abstract:Pulsar timing arrays are sensitive to gravitational wave perturbations produced by individual supermassive black hole binaries during their early inspiral phase. Modified gravity theories allow for the emission of gravitational dipole radiation, which is enhanced relative to the quadrupole contribution for low orbital velocities, making the early inspiral an ideal regime to test for the presence of modified gravity effects. Using a theory-agnostic description of modified gravity theories based on the parametrized post-Einsteinian framework, we explore the possibility of detecting deviations from General Relativity using simulated pulsar timing array data, and provide forecasts for the constraints that can be achieved. We generalize the {\tt enterprise} pulsar timing software to account for possible additional polarization states and modifications to the phase evolution, and study how accurately the parameters of simulated signals can be recovered. We find that while a pure dipole model can partially recover a pure quadrupole signal, there is little possibility for confusion when the full model with all polarization states is used. With no signal present, and using noise levels comparable to those seen in contemporary arrays, we produce forecasts for the upper limits that can be placed on the amplitudes of alternative polarization modes as a function of the sky location of the source.

Pulsar Timing As a Probe of Non‐Einsteinian Polarizations of Gravitational Waves

Abstract:Einstein's theory of gravity predicts waves of the distortion of spacetime with two degrees of polarization; alternative theories predict more polarizations, up to a maximum of six. Although laser interferometric gravity wave detectors can be used to search for at least some of the non-Einsteinian polarizations, their configuration is not optimal for the task. By contrast, the angular distribution of pulsars in the sky makes pulsar timing a flexible tool for detecting all polarizations. We give here an analysis of the sensitivity of pulsar timing to an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background of waves with non-Einsteinian polarizations and conclude that their detection may be feasible in the near future. In particular, we compute the number of pulsars necessary to detect a stochastic background made up of one type of polarization and to distinguish non-Einsteinian from standard polarizations. We conclude that for biweekly observations made for five years with rms timing accuracy of 100 ns, detecting non-Einsteinian modes will require: 60 pulsars in the case of the longitudinal mode; 60 for the two spin-1 "shear'' modes; and 40 for the spin-0 "breathing'' mode. These are targets that should be easily achievable with the proposed Square Kilometer Array project. To discriminate non-Einsteinian modes from Einsteinian modes, we need 40 pulsars for the breathing mode, 100 pulsars for the longitudinal mode, and 500 pulsars for the shear mode. We confirm the previous estimate that 40 pulsars are needed to detect the spin-2 "transverse'' (Einsteinian) polarizations. Better focused statistical tests may allow improvements in sensitivity for some of these polarizations.

Abstract:The determination of the polarization modes of gravitational waves (GWs) and their dispersion relations is a crucial task for scrutinizing the viability of extended theories of gravity. A tool to investigate the polarization states of GWs is the well-known formalism developed by Eardley, Lee, and Lightman [ Phys. Rev. D 8 , 3308 (1973).] which uses the Newman-Penrose (NP) coefficients to determine the polarization content of GWs in metric theories of gravity. However, if the speed of GWs is smaller than the speed of light, the number of NP coefficients is greater than the number of polarizations. To overcome this inconvenience we use the Bardeen formalism to describe the six possible polarization modes of GWs considering general dispersion relations for the modes. The definition of a new gauge-invariant quantity enables an unambiguous description of the scalar longitudinal polarization mode. We apply the formalism to general relativity, scalar-tensor theories, f(R) gravity, and a wide class of quadratic gravity. To obtain a bridge between theory and experiment, we derive an explicit relation between a physical observable (the derivative of the frequency shift of an electromagnetic signal), and the gauge-invariant variables. From this relation, we find an analytical formula for the pulsar timing rms response to each polarization mode. To estimate the sensitivity of a single pulsar timing, we focus on the case of a dispersion relation of a massive particle. The sensitivity curves of the scalar longitudinal and vector polarization modes change significantly depending on the value of the effective mass. The detection (or absence of detection) of the polarization modes using the pulsar timing technique has decisive implications for alternative theories of gravity. Finally, investigating a cutoff frequency in the pulsar timing band can lead to a more stringent bound on the graviton mass than that presented by ground-based interferometers. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.104054 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on testing gravity theories in the radiative regime using pulsar timing array observations. After reviewing current techniques to measure the dispersion and alternative polarization of gravitational waves, we extend the framework to the most general situations, where the combinations of a massive graviton and alternative polarization modes are considered. The atlas of the Hellings-Downs functions is completed by the new calculations for these dispersive alternative polarization modes. We find that each mode and corresponding graviton mass introduce characteristic features in the Hellings-Downs function. Thus, in principal, we can not only detect each polarization mode, measure the corresponding graviton mass, but also discriminate the different scenarios. In this way, we can test gravity theories in the radiative regime in a generalized fashion, and such method is a direct experiment, where one can address the gauge symmetry of the gravity theories in their linearised limits. Although current pulsar timing still lacks enough stable pulsars and sensitivity for such practices, we expect that future telescopes with larger collecting area could make such experiments be feasible.
Pulsar timing constraints on narrow-band stochastic signals

Abstract:We consider the sensitivity of the pulsar timing array (PTA) technique to specific kind of narrow-band stochastic signals in nano-Hz frequency range. Specifically, we examine the narrow-band signal produced by oscillating gravitational scalar potentials in the Galaxy (Gravitational Potential Background), which arise if an ultralight massive scalar field is the galactic dark matter. We have performed a Bayesian analysis of publicly available data on 12 pulsars obtained by the NANOGrav project. In the monochromatic approximation, the upper limit on the variable gravitational potential amplitude is $\Psi_c<1.14 \times 10^{-15}$, corresponding to the dimensionless strain amplitude $h_c=2\sqrt{3}\Psi_c < 4\times 10^{-15}$ at frequency $f=1.75\times 10^{-8} Hz$. In the narrow-band approximation, the upper limit on the energy density of GPB is found to be $\Omega_{GPB}<1.27 \times 10^{-9}$ at $f=6.2\times 10^{-9} Hz$. These limits are an order of magnitude higher than the theoretically expected values, if the ultralight scalar field with a mass of $\sim 10^{-23} eV$ is assumed to be the galactic dark matter with a local density of $\sim 0.3 GeV cm^{-3}$.

Pulsar Timing Sensitivities to Gravitational Waves from Relativistic Metric Theories of Gravity

Abstract:Pulsar timing experiments aimed at the detection of gravitational radiation have been performed for decades now. With the forthcoming construction of large arrays capable of tracking multiple millisecond pulsars, it is very likely we will be able to make the first detection of gravitational radiation in the nano-Hertz band, and test Einstein's theory of relativity by measuring the polarization components of the detected signals. Since a gravitational wave predicted by the most general relativistic metric theory of gravity accounts for {\it six} polarization modes (the usual two Einstein's tensor polarizations as well as two vector and two scalar wave components), we have estimated the single-antenna sensitivities to these six polarizations. We find pulsar timing experiments to be significantly more sensitive, over their entire observational frequency band ($\approx 10^{-9} - 10^{-6}$ Hz), to scalar-longitudinal and vector waves than to scalar-transverse and tensor waves. At $10^{-7}$ Hz and with pulsars at a distance of $1$ kpc, for instance, we estimate an average sensitivity to scalar-longitudinal waves that is more than two orders of magnitude better than the sensitivity to tensor waves. Our results imply that a direct detection of gravitational radiation by pulsar timing will result into a test of the theory of general relativity that is more stringent than that based on monitoring the decay of the orbital period of a binary system.

Abstract:Some alternative gravity theories allow the Universal matter distribution to single out the existence of a preferred frame, which breaks the symmetry of local Lorentz invariance (LLI) for the gravitational interaction. In the post-Newtonian parametrization of semi-conservative gravity theories, LLI violation is characterized by two parameters, alpha(1) and alpha(2). In binary pulsars, the isotropic violation of Lorentz invariance in the gravitational sector should lead to characteristic preferred frame effects (PFEs) in the orbital dynamics, if the barycenter of the binary is moving relative to the preferred frame with a velocity w. For small-eccentricity binaries, the effects induced by (alpha) over cap (1) and (alpha) over cap (2) (the hat indicates possible modifications by strong-field effects) decouple, and can therefore be tested independently. We use recent timing results of two compact pulsar-white dwarf binaries with known three-dimensional velocity, PSRs J1012+5307 and J1738+0333 to constrain PFEs for strongly self-gravitating bodies, by assuming the isotropic cosmic microwave background to single out a preferred frame. The time derivative of the projected semi-major axis is used to constrain a precession of the orbital plane around w due to PFEs. From this, we derive a limit vertical bar(alpha) over cap (2)vertical bar < 1.8 x 10(-4) at 95% confidence level, which is the most constraining limit for strongly self-gravitating systems up to now, however, still three orders of magnitude weaker than the best Solar system limit for the corresponding weak-field parameter alpha(2). Concerning <(alpha)over cap>(1), we propose a new, robust method to constrain this parameter, which avoids the probabilistic considerations inherent in previous methods. This method is based on the fact that a PFE-induced intrinsic eccentricity cannot stay unobserved during a long-term observation due to the significant precession of periastron in binary pulsar with short orbital periods. Our most conservative result, (alpha) over cap (1) = -0.4(-3.1)(+3.7) x 10(-5) at 95% confidence level from PSR J1738+0333, constitutes a significant improvement compared to current most stringent limits obtained both in the Solar system and binary pulsar tests. We also derive corresponding limits for (alpha) over cap (1) and (alpha) over cap (2) for a preferred frame that is at rest with respect to our Galaxy, and preferred frames that locally co-move with rotation of our Galaxy. These limits will continue to improve significantly with future pulsar timing observations conducted at large radio telescopes.

Abstract:We present results from the first directed search for nontensorial gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for tensorial (plus and cross) modes only, a generic metric theory may, in principle, predict waves with up to six different polarizations. This analysis is sensitive to continuous signals of scalar, vector, or tensor polarizations, and does not rely on any specific theory of gravity. After searching data from the first observation run of the advanced LIGO detectors for signals at twice the rotational frequency of 200 known pulsars, we find no evidence of gravitational waves of any polarization. We report the first upper limits for scalar and vector strains, finding values comparable in magnitude to previously published limits for tensor strain. Our results may be translated into constraints on specific alternative theories of gravity.
Constraints on non-local gravity from binary pulsars gravitational emission

Abstract:Non-local theories of gravity are considered extended theories of gravity, meaning that when the non-local terms are canceled out, the limit of General Relativity (GR) is obtained. Several reasons have led us to consider this theory with increasing interest, but primarily non-locality emerges in a natural way as a side effect of the introduction of quantum corrections to GR, the purpose of which was to cure the singularity problem, both at astrophysical and cosmological level. In this paper we studied a peculiar case of the so called Deser-Woodard theory consisting in the addition of a non-local term to the Hilbert-Einstein lagrangian, and we derived for the first time contraints on the dimensionaless non-local parameter A by exploiting the predicted gravitational wave emission in three binary pulsars, namely PSR J1012+5307, PSR J0348+0432 and PSR $J1738+0333. We discovered that the instantaneous flux strongly depends on A and that the best constraints (0.12 < A < 0.16) come from PSR J1012+5307, for which the GR prediction is outside the observational ranges. However, since for PSR J1012 + 5307 scintillation is suspected, as emerged in a recent census by LOFAR, corruptions in pulsar timing could be hidden. We finally comment on the usability and reliability of this type of test for extended theories of gravity.

A Test of Gravity with Pulsar Timing Arrays

Abstract:A successful measurement of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) in Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) would open up a new window through which to test the predictions of General Relativity (GR). We consider how these measurements might reveal deviations from GR by studying the overlap reduction function -- the quantity that in GR is approximated by the Hellings-Downs curve -- in some sample modifications of gravity, focusing on the generic prediction of a modified dispersion relation for gravitational waves. We find a distinct signature of such modifications to GR -- a shift in the minimum angle of the angular distribution -- and demonstrate that this shift is quantitatively sensitive to any change in the phase velocity. In a given modification of gravity, this result can be used, in some regions of parameter space, to distinguish the effect of a modified dispersion relation from that due to the presence of extra polarization modes.

The impact of a stochastic gravitational-wave background on pulsar timing parameters

Abstract:Gravitational waves are predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity as well as other theories of gravity. The rotational stability of the fastest pulsars means that timing of an array of these objects can be used to detect and investigate gravitational waves. Simultaneously, however, pulsar timing is used to estimate spin period, period derivative, astrometric, and binary parameters. Here we calculate the effects that a stochastic background of gravitational waves has on pulsar timing parameters through the use of simulations and data from the millisecond pulsars PSR J0437--4715 and PSR J1713+0747. We show that the reported timing uncertainties become underestimated with increasing background amplitude by up to a factor of $\sim10$ for a stochastic gravitational-wave background amplitude of $A=5\times 10^{-15}$, where $A$ is the amplitude of the characteristic strain spectrum at one-year gravitational wave periods. We find evidence for prominent low-frequency spectral leakage in simulated data sets including a stochastic gravitational-wave background. We use these simulations along with independent Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of parallax to set a 2--sigma upper limit of $A\le9.1\times 10^{-14}$. We find that different supermassive black hole assembly scenarios do not have a significant effect on the calculated upper limits. We also test the effects that ultralow--frequency (10$^{-12}$--10$^{-9}$ Hz) gravitational waves have on binary pulsar parameter measurements and find that the corruption of these parameters is less than those due to $10^{-9}$--$10^{-7}$ Hz gravitational waves.

Abstract:The recent compelling observation of the nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background has brought to light a new galactic arena to test gravity. In this paper, we derive a formula for the most general expression of the stochastic gravitational wave background correlation that could be tested with pulsar timing and future square kilometer arrays. Our expressions extend the harmonic space analysis, also often referred to as the power spectrum approach, to predict the correlation signatures of an anisotropic polarized stochastic gravitational wave background with subluminal tensor, vector, and scalar gravitational degrees of freedom. We present the first few nontrivial anisotropy and polarization signatures in the correlation and discuss their dependence on the gravitational wave speed and pulsar distances. Our results set up tests that could potentially be used to rigorously examine the isotropy of the stochastic gravitational wave background and strengthen the existing constraints on possible non-Einsteinian polarizations in the nanohertz gravitational wave regime.

Constraining Nonperturbative Strong-Field Effects in Scalar-Tensor Gravity by Combining Pulsar Timing and Laser-Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Detectors

Abstract:Pulsar timing and laser-interferometer gravitational-wave (GW) detectors are superb laboratories to study gravity theories in the strong-field regime. Here, we combine these tools to test the mono-scalar-tensor theory of Damour and Esposito-Farese (DEF), which predicts nonperturbative scalarization phenomena for neutron stars (NSs). First, applying Markov-chain Monte Carlo techniques, we use the absence of dipolar radiation in the pulsar-timing observations of five binary systems composed of a NS and a white dwarf, and eleven equations of state (EOSs) for NSs, to derive the most stringent constraints on the two free parameters of the DEF scalar-tensor theory. Since the binary-pulsar bounds depend on the NS mass and the EOS, we find that current pulsar-timing observations leave scalarization windows, i.e., regions of parameter space where scalarization can still be prominent. Then, we investigate if these scalarization windows could be closed and if pulsar-timing constraints could be improved by laser-interferometer GW detectors, when spontaneous (or dynamical) scalarization sets in during the early (or late) stages of a binary NS (BNS) evolution. For the early inspiral of a BNS carrying constant scalar charge, we employ a Fisher-matrix analysis to show that Advanced LIGO can improve pulsar-timing constraints for some EOSs, and next-generation detectors, such as the Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope, will be able to improve those bounds for all eleven EOSs. Using the late inspiral of a BNS, we estimate that for some of the EOSs under consideration, the onset of dynamical scalarization can happen early enough to improve the constraints on the DEF parameters obtained by combining the five binary pulsars. Thus, in the near future, the complementarity of pulsar timing and direct observations of GWs on the ground will be extremely valuable in probing gravity theories in the strong-field regime.
Linear polarization of the stochastic gravitational-wave background with pulsar timing arrays

Abstract:Pulsar-timing collaborations have recently reported evidence for the detection of an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background consistent with one sourced by a population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries. However, a certain degree of anisotropy and polarization may be present. Thus, the characterization of the energy density and polarization of the background at different angular scales is important. In this paper, we describe the signatures of linear polarization in the stochastic gravitational-wave background on the timing residuals obtained with pulsar-timing arrays. We expand the linear polarization map in terms of spin-weighted spherical harmonics and recast it into the $E$-mode (parity even) and $B$-mode (parity odd) basis. We provide expressions for the minimum-variance estimators for the coefficients of that expansion and evaluate the smallest detectable signal as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio with which the isotropic GW signal is detected and the number of pulsars in the survey. We evaluate the covariance between the estimators for the spherical-harmonic coefficients of the linear polarization $E$-modes and those for the intensity anisotropy. We also show that there is no covariance between the spherical-harmonic coefficients for the $B$-modes of the linear polarization and those for the circular polarization, even though both have the same parity. Our approach results in simple, elegant, and easily evaluated expressions for the overlap reduction functions for linear polarization.

Abstract:Pulsars are wonderful gravitational probes. Their tiny size and stellar mass give their rotation periods a stablility comparable to that of atomic frequency standards. This is especially true of the rapidly rotating "millisecond pulsars" (MSPs). Many of these rapidly rotating pulsars are in orbit with another star, allowing pulsar timing to probe relativistic perturbations to the orbital motion. Pulsars have provided the most stringent tests of theories of relativistic gravitation, especially in the strong-field regime, and have shown that Einstein's general theory of relativity is an accurate description of the observed motions. Many other gravitational theories are effectively ruled out or at least severely constrained by these results. MSPs can also be used to form a "Pulsar Timing Array" (PTA). PTAs are Galactic-scale interferometers that have the potential to directly detect nanohertz gravitational waves from astrophysical sources. Orbiting super-massive black holes in the cores of distant galaxies are the sources most likely to be detectable. Although no evidence for gravitational waves has yet been found in PTA data sets, the latest limits are seriously constraining current ideas on galaxy and black-hole evolution in the early Universe.

Abstract:The discovery of the first pulsar in a binary star system, the Hulse--Taylor pulsar, 50 years ago opened up an entirely new field of experimental gravity. For the first time it was possible to investigate strong-field and radiative aspects of the gravitational interaction. Continued observations of the Hulse--Taylor pulsar eventually led, among other confirmations of the predictions of general relativity (GR), to the first evidence for the reality of gravitational waves. In the meantime, many more radio pulsars have been discovered that are suitable for testing GR and its alternatives. One particularly remarkable binary system is the Double Pulsar, which has far surpassed the Hulse--Taylor pulsar in several respects. In addition, binary pulsar-white dwarf systems have been shown to be particularly suitable for testing alternative gravitational theories, as they often predict strong dipolar gravitational radiation for such asymmetric systems. A rather unique pulsar laboratory is the pulsar in a hierarchical stellar triple, that led to by far the most precise confirmation of the strong-field version of the universality of free fall. Using radio pulsars, it could be shown that additional aspects of the Strong Equivalence Principle apply to the dynamics of strongly self-gravitating bodies, like the local position and local Lorentz invariance of the gravitational interaction. So far, GR has passed all pulsar tests with flying colours, while at the same time many alternative gravity theories have either been strongly constrained or even falsified. New telescopes, instrumentation, timing and search algorithms promise a significant improvement of the existing tests and the discovery of (qualitatively) new, more relativistic binary systems.

Abstract:The nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is an excellent early universe laboratory for testing the fundamental properties of gravity. In this paper, we elucidate on the full potential of pulsar timing array (PTA) by utilizing cosmic variance-limited, or rather experimental noise-free, correlation measurements to understand the SGWB and by extension gravity. We show that measurements of the angular power spectrum play a pivotal role in the PTA precision era for scientific inferencing. In particular, we illustrate that cosmic variance-limited measurements of the first few power spectrum multipoles enable us to clearly set apart general relativity from alternative theories of gravity.
