Abstract:A single-photon, time-gated, $160 \times 120 $ pixel imager is presented for its application in fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. Exploiting single-photon avalanche diodes and an extremely compact pixel circuitry—only seven MOSFETs and one MOSCAP—the imager is capable of gathering information about photon position, number, and time distribution, enabling cost-effective devices for scientific imaging applications. This is achieved thanks to the photon counting and time-gating capabilities implemented in the analog domain, which in turn enable a $15\;{\upmu}{\text{m}}$ pixel with a 21% fill-factor. A reconfigurable column circuitry supports both the analog conventional readout and a self-referenced analog-to-digital conversion, able to cancel out the pixel-to-pixel nonuniformities, and speeding up the framerate to 486 fps. The imager, featuring also a delay locked loop to stabilize the internal waveform generation for reliable timing performance, has been implemented in a standard high-voltage $0.35\;{\upmu}{\text{m}}$ CMOS technology. Measurements in a fluorescent lifetime setup have been performed, comparing the results with single-point acquisitions made with commercial time-correlated equipment.

Abstract:A quantitative analysis of the surface composition of the Heusler alloy NiMnSb has been undertaken using angle-resolved x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and the surface composition characterized. With sufficient annealing cycles, the stoichiometric surface evolves to a surface that is manganese rich. This indicates that the surface enthalpy is different from the bulk for the Heusler alloy NiMnSb.
E2F1 and RNA binding protein QKI comprise a negative feedback in the cell cycle regulation

Abstract:pRb/E2F1 activity is coordinately regulated during the cell cycle progression, while the molecular strategies safeguarding this pathway are not fully understood. We have previously shown that RNA binding protein QKI inhibits the cell proliferation and promotes the differentiation of gastrointestinal epithelium, suggesting a role of QKI in cell cycle regulation. Here we found that with the cell entry into S phase, QKI expression increased both at the mRNA and protein levels, which was reminiscent of cyclin E expression. Forced expression of E2F1 increased the endogenous level of QKI. Promoter luciferase assay and ChIP analysis identified that the -542~-538 E2F1 binding site was responsible for the upregulation. Increased QKI expression by E2F1, in turn, reduced the E2F1 activity and delayed S-phase entry, forming a negative feedback. As a gene expression regulator, QKI overexpression increased p27, while it decreased cyclin D1 and c-fos expression. Molecularly, p27 and c-fos were direct targets of QKI, while cyclin D1 reduction might be an indirect effect. Taken together, our results reveal that E2F1 directly transcribes QKI, which, in turn, negatively regulates the cell cycle by targeting multiple cell cycle regulators, forming an E2F1-QKI-pRb/E2F1 negative feedback loop.
Online Dating Sites: A tool for romance scams or a lucrative e-business model?

Abstract:Online dating sites are a new lucrative B2C e-business model, however, these sites are increasingly used by felons and scammers to exploit vulnerable customers. Although the impact of online dating scams on victims is vast, and online dating sites are a growing e-business, research on this topic is almost non-existent. The few studies on online dating sites are generally from Psychology addressing user issues. The aim of this research is to explore online dating sites as an e-business model, types of scams carried out via these sites, and regulations required to protect users of online dating sites. Using document analysis, this research will establish the current business models of online dating sites, the types of online dating scams, the impact of these scams on victims, and will develop a typology of these issues for the protection of users and for reducing this new type of cybercrime. Findings of this research will contribute to knowledge on online dating sites as an e-business model which unfortunately is misused by some users for criminal activities to provide future research directions.
Reminiscing Goals and Behavior as Predictors of Child Psychological Functioning

Abstract:Research has shown links between parent-child emotion reminiscing and socio-emotional outcomes, yet little research has investigated why parents talk about emotions with their children and how this relates to children's development. The purpose of this study was to explore how parents' self-reported goals and observed behavior in emotion reminiscing predict children's psychological functioning. Recruited from both clinical and community settings in Australia, 54 children aged 8–12-years old engaged in an emotion reminiscing conversation task with their parent. Conversations were coded on emotion and elaborative quality. Parents reported their reminiscing goals using the Caregiver Reminiscing Scale-Revised (CRS-R), and both parent and child reported on the child's psychological functioning. After including associated covariates, six hierarchical regression models were conducted to assess for unique associations of parents' goals and behavior with each of the child's psychological functioning indicators. Child-reported internalizing difficulties (C-INT) were predicted by peer relationship goals, whereas parent-reported internalizing (p-INT) and externalizing difficulties (p-EXT) were uniquely predicted by behavior control goals. Emotion comprehension was uniquely predicted by memory skill goals, and cognitive errors were uniquely predicted by children's emotion exploration during emotion reminiscing. Rumination was not uniquely predicted by reminiscing goals or behavior. This study highlights the importance of considering parents' emotion reminiscing goals: for future longitudinal research, and in reminiscing interventions for children with mental health difficulties.

Abstract:Parent‐guided reminiscing helps children learn how to interpret and recollect personal experiences. These interpretive abilities are important because many experiences are ambiguous, and a tendency toward negative interpretation is associated with emotional disorders. Here, we explore whether naturally‐occurring variations in parent‐guided reminiscing are associated with children's interpretation and recall of novel ambiguous events. Mothers and their children (aged 5–6 years) reminisced about three shared negative events. Next, children were read several stories that described ambiguous social situations and were asked to invent endings that involved making an inference about motives of others in the stories. Later, children were asked questions to elicit story recall. Mothers who used more negative terms during reminiscing had children who were more likely to invent negative story endings and distort story recall negatively. Thus, mothers who frame memory‐sharing conversations with children negatively might put them at risk for developing negative interpretation and memory biases.

Abstract:Recent research has highlighted the critical role in children's cognitive development of the metacognitive support parents give their children during everyday interactions. Our main goal was to examine whether parents made consistent use of metacognitive talk across different parent – child interaction contexts and to document the effect of this metacognitive talk across contexts on preschoolers' memory. The relation between children's and parents' metacognitive talk was also examined, along with the link between children's metacognitive talk and their own memory performance. 64 Belgian preschooler – parent dyads ( M age = 40.3 months) were invited to play memory games together and to reminisce about a standardized event. In both contexts, parents' and children's utterances were analyzed for their metacognitive content. Children's episodic memory was assessed through a story-recall task. Results revealed that, in terms of frequency of use, parents exhibited a somewhat consistent metacognitive style across contexts. The nature of the metacognitive comments that were produced, however, varied depending on the context. Moreover, parents' consistent production of higher rates of metacognitive comments in both contexts was found to be associated with better memory performance in children. Our data also revealed that children's tendency to make metacognitive comments was related to their parents' metacognitive production and to their own memory performance. By documenting the relations between parents' and children's metacognitive talk and the effect on children's memory, this study provides promising avenues for a better understanding of how metacognitive processes might be involved in early memory development.

Abstract:Vicarious memories, in which individuals recall events experienced by others, may have similar properties to personal memories. Two studies explored characteristics of memories shared between parents and their offspring. A key question was whether vicarious memories would form a reminiscence bump, clustering disproportionately in adolescence and early adulthood. In Study 1, 147 older adults (current M age = 68.0 years) reported personal memories that they had shared with their child (current M age = 44.5 years) and personal memories that their child had shared with them. Prominent reminiscence bumps were evident for both kinds of memories. Vicarious and personal memory qualities correlated similarly with well-being and relationship closeness. In Study 2, 149 adults ( M age = 47.3) imagined hypothetical events a 70-year-old had shared with their child, and vice versa. Reminiscence bumps for hypothetical events mirrored Study 1 memory distributions. The observed similarities between vicarious and personal memories have theoretical and practical implications. Abstract:Autobiographical memory specificity is known to contribute to better mental health, social problem-solving, and episodic future thinking. While numerous studies have addressed variables that affect autobiographical memory specificity, little is known regarding the meta-memory processes that underpin memory retrieval. In this study, we introduced two meta-memory constructs, ease of retrieval judgments and anticipation of negative emotion evoked, which potentially affect autobiographical memory specificity. Participants ( N = 109) first rated the ease of retrieval and anticipated emotions for positive and negative words used in a subsequent autobiographical memory test. We used the Optional Instructions of the Autobiographical Memory Test , in which participants were instructed that "specific memories are better, but other memories are permissible," allowing them to adjust how much cognitive effort they spent on generative retrieval after a failure of direct retrieval. They also self-judged whether each retrieval was generative (using additional cues with cognitive effort) or direct (immediate recall without much cognitive effort). Results showed that for generative retrieval, ease of retrieval was associated with greater specific and general memories and fewer omissions. A more negative anticipated emotion was associated with fewer specific memories and greater omissions, but was not with general memories. These results suggest that low retrievability and anticipated negative emotion prevent individuals from devoting efforts to generative retrieval. The lack of association between anticipated negative emotion and general memory calls into question the functional avoidance hypothesis regarding autobiographical memory specificity. We discussed how participants judged these meta-memories and directions for future research.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of a study examining links between maternal representations of attachment, child attachment security, and mother and child narrative styles assessed in the context of reminiscences about shared experiences. Participants were 90 mother - child dyads. Child attachment security was assessed using the attachment Q-set and maternal attachment representations were measured using a recently designed instrument that assesses the script-like qualities of those representations. Analyses examined dependencies in the mother - child memory talk data and then assessed the overlap between both mother and child reminiscing styles and the attachment variables. Narrative styles of both the mothers and their children were coherent and consistent for each dyad member. Furthermore, maternal narrative style (e.g., specific and elaborative questions, using confirming evaluation comments) was significantly related to child participation in the narrative. Maternal and child attachment variables were positively and significantly correlated, and child security was positively associated with maternal narrative style. Maternal secure base scripts were also found to be significantly related to the number of references to emotions in both mother and child narratives as well as to children's overall participation in the memory talk. The pattern of results suggests that attachment representations serve as one influence on the manner(s) in which mother - child dyads think about and discuss emotion-laden content relevant to the child's personal autobiography. Furthermore, the results are consistent with the notion that the manner in which children organize their thoughts about emotion are (at least potentially) shaped by the narrative styles of their parents.
Knowledge of Memory Functions in European and Asian American Adults and Children: the Relation to Autobiographical Memory.

Abstract:This study investigated explicit knowledge of autobiographical memory functions using a newly developed questionnaire. European and Asian American adults (N = 57) and school-aged children (N = 68) indicated their agreement with 13 statements about why people think about and share memories pertaining to four broad functions-self, social, directive and emotion regulation. Children were interviewed for personal memories concurrently with the memory function knowledge assessment and again 3 months later. It was found that adults agreed to the self, social and directive purposes of memory to a greater extent than did children, whereas European American children agreed to the emotion regulation purposes of memory to a greater extent than did European American adults. Furthermore, European American children endorsed more self and emotion regulation functions than did Asian American children, whereas Asian American adults endorsed more directive functions than did European American adults. Children's endorsement of memory functions, particularly social functions, was associated with more detailed and personally meaningful memories. These findings are informative for the understanding of developmental and cultural influences on memory function knowledge and of the relation of such knowledge to autobiographical memory development.

Abstract:Training in mindfulness skills has been shown to increase autobiographical memory specificity. The aim of this study was to examine whether there is also an association between individual differences in trait mindfulness and memory specificity using a non-clinical student sample (N = 70). Also examined were the relationships between other memory characteristics and trait mindfulness, self-reported depression and rumination. Participants wrote about 12 autobiographical memories, which were recalled in response to emotion word cues in a minimal instruction version of the Autobiographical Memory Test, rated each memory for seven characteristics, and completed the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Ruminative Responses Scale. Higher rumination scores were associated with more reliving and more intense emotion during recall. Depression scores were not associated with any memory variables. Higher trait mindfulness was associated with lower memory specificity and with more intense and more positive emotion during recall. Thus, trait mindfulness is associated with memory specificity, but the association is opposite to that found in mindfulness training studies. It is suggested that this difference may be due to an influence of trait mindfulness on memory encoding as well as retrieval processes and an influence on the mode of self-awareness that leads to a greater focus on momentary rather than narrative self-reference.

Abstract:To test the transmission of mental health difficulties from mother to child, we examined mediation through emotion reminiscing conversations and child language. Maternal depression symptoms were measured at 9 months post-partum, and child mental health outcomes were measured at age 8 years. Emotion reminiscing conversations between 1,234 mother-child pairs (624 boys, 610 girls) were recorded as part of a large, diverse, longitudinal cohort Growing Up in New Zealand. The 1,234 reminiscing conversations were transcribed and coded for maternal elaboration and emotion resolution quality (mother and child). The coded reminiscing variables did not mediate the pathway from maternal depression to child mental health outcomes; however, each maternal reminiscing variable together with child language skill serially mediated the relationship from maternal depression symptoms to child-reported anxiety and depression symptoms, and parent-reported child externalizing symptoms. Language as a skill and it's use as a tool for making shared meaning from past events are highlighted as possible mechanisms for the intergenerational transmission of mental health difficulties. These findings point to potential opportunities for early interventions, including prevention of and support for postnatal depression, family intervention in reminiscing training, and supporting child language development.

Abstract:This study tests whether developments in self‐knowledge and autobiographical memory across early to late childhood are related. Self‐descriptions and autobiographical memory reports were collected from 379 three‐ to eleven‐year‐old predominantly white Scottish children, Mage = 90.3 months, SD = 31.1, 54% female. Episodic memory was measured in an enactment task involving recall and source monitoring of performed and witnessed actions. The volume and complexity of self‐knowledge and autobiographical memory reports increased with age, as did source monitoring ability and recall bias for own actions. Regression analyses and structural equation modeling confirmed a close association between these developments. These results inform our theoretical understanding of the development of the self‐memory system in childhood, which may contribute to the gradual offset of childhood amnesia.

Abstract:According to the CaRFAX model (Williams et al., 2007), several processes may result in overgeneral autobiographical memory. The present study examined whether the type of cue used in the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) is important for illuminating relationships between autobiographical memory specificity and variables pertinent to the Functional Avoidance (FA) and Capture and Rumination (CaR) aspects of the model. Sixty-one women varying in their experience of a potentially traumatic event and previous depression completed two versions of the AMT: one containing affective cues and the other containing cues representing idiosyncratic self-discrepancies. Consistent with the FA hypothesis, avoidance of the potentially traumatic event was associated with fewer specific memories on the affective, but not the self-discrepant AMT. Furthermore, in line with the CaR hypothesis, performance on the self-discrepant, but not the affective AMT was related to ruminative self-reflection in women reporting previous depression, even after controlling for current depression and education levels. Together the results suggest that varying cue type may increase the sensitivity of the AMT, depending on the aspect of the CaRFAX model of overgeneral memory that is to be addressed.

Retrieval-induced forgetting for autobiographical memories beyond recall rates: A developmental study.

Abstract:We investigated whether selective discussion of autobiographical memory narratives would impact the quality of young people's recall of their nondiscussed memory narratives. Children (ages 8-9 years, <i>n</i> = 65) and adolescents (ages 13-15 years, <i>n</i> = 58) completed an adapted version of the retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) paradigm for self-generated positively and negatively valenced autobiographical memories. Overall, 54.5% of the sample were female and 63.4% were of European ethnicity (11.4% Pacific Peoples, 8.1% Middle Eastern/Latin American/African, 7.3% Māori, 7.3% Asian, 2.4% Other). We defined narrative qualities as narrative coherence (Reese et al., 2011) and episodic and nonepisodic information (Addis et al., 2008). In light of developmental findings in other domains of autobiographical memory research (e.g., Reese et al., 2011; Willoughby et al., 2012), we hypothesized that selective discussion would result in RIF for children's, but not adolescents', narrative coherence and episodic detail, and that RIF would not occur for nonepisodic details for either children or adolescents. Findings for narrative coherence and nonepisodic detail indicated support for our hypotheses. Findings for episodic detail were in partial support of our hypothesis; RIF for episodic detail was found for both children and adolescents. Our findings not only demonstrate the importance of investigating the wider effects of RIF but also uncovered developmental differences previously overlooked in the field. Mother-child reminiscing about everyday experiences: implications for psychological interventions in the preschool years

Abstract:The preschool years are a critical period for all aspects of child development, and any disruption to cognitive or socio-emotional functioning at this stage has potential repercussions for current and future functioning. There is, therefore, a need for clinical interventions that optimize the functioning of children at risk of psychological disorders. In the current paper, we review research showing that the way in which parents discuss everyday experiences with their young children has significant implications for the children's cognitive and socio-emotional functioning. Specifically, mothers who engage their child in a rich elaborative style of talking about past experiences have children who also develop an elaborative style of remembering and reporting personal experiences. Evidence suggests that elaborative reminiscing can benefit children's social and self understanding, the quality of the parent-child relationship, and language and emergent literacy. Moreover, findings show that elements of the elaborative style can be identified and taught to parents. We propose that elaborative parent-child discussion about the past could form the basis of developmentally sensitive intervention during the preschool period.

Abstract:A protocol on chemoselective cobalt(II) porphyrin-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation of N-alkyl indoles/pyrroles with alkylcarbenes has been developed. The reaction enables the rapid construction of a range of nitrogen-containing polycyclic compounds in moderate to high yields from readily accessible materials. These N-containing polycyclic compounds can be converted into a variety of N-heterocycles with potential synthetic and biological interest. Compared to their N-tosylhydrazone counterparts, the use of bulky N-2,4,6-triisopropylbenzenesulfonyl hydrazones as carbene precursors allows cyclopropanation to occur under milder reaction conditions.
Depression diagnoses, but not individual differences in depression symptoms, are associated with reduced autobiographical memory specificity

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Difficulties recalling specific events from one's autobiographical past have been associated with a range of emotional disorders. We present the first examination of whether diagnoses of depression or individual differences in depression severity explain the most variance in autobiographical memory specificity. We also examine the contribution of other key cognitive factors associated with reduced memory specificity - rumination and verbal fluency - to these effects.METHODS: Participants with (n = 21) and without (n = 25) major depressive disorder completed self-report measures of depression severity (Beck Depression Inventory version II; BDI-II) and ruminative tendency (Ruminative Response Scale), a measure of verbal fluency, and the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) to assess memory specificity.RESULTS: People diagnosed with depression recalled significantly fewer specific memories in the AMT relative to healthy controls. In a linear regression, diagnostic status explained a significant amount of unique variance in specificity whereas BDI-II scores did not. Diagnostic group differences in verbal fluency also explained a significant amount of variance in specificity.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings extend our understanding of the mechanisms involved in reduced memory specificity but future research must explore the causal contribution of weak executive functioning to reduced memory specificity.PRACTITIONERS POINTS: Diagnoses of depression were associated with problems recalling specific events from one's past. Problems with memory specificity amongst depressed people were associated with executive functioning difficulties. Problems with specificity were not associated with individual differences in depression severity or ruminative tendencies.
