Abstract:Abstract Magnetic achiral planar microswimmers can be massively fabricated at low cost and are envisioned to be useful for in vivo biomedical applications. To understand locomotion in representative in vivo environments, we investigated the swimming performance of achiral planar microswimmers in methylcellulose solutions. We observed that these microswimmers displayed very similar swimming characteristics in methylcellulose solutions as in water. Furthermore, this study indicated that the range of precession angles increased as the concentration of MC solution increased. Last, it was demonstrated that achiral planar microswimmers with similar precession angles exhibited nearly the same dimensionless speeds in different concentrations of the methylcellulose solutions. Upon understanding swimmer kinematics, more effective control over the achiral planar microswimmers can be achieved to perform multiple biomedical tasks in in vivo environments.

Abstract:Magnetic microrobots that swim through liquid media are of interest for minimally invasive medical procedures, bioengineering, and manufacturing. Many of the envisaged applications, such as micromanipulation and targeted cargo delivery, necessitate the use and adequate control of multiple microrobots, which will increase the velocity, robustness, and efficacy of a procedure. While various methods involving heterogeneous geometries, magnetic properties, and surface chemistries have been proposed to enhance independent control, the main challenge has been that the motion between all microwsimmers remains coupled through the global control signal of the magnetic field. Katsamba and Lauga proposed transchiral microrobots, a theoretical design with magnetized spirals of opposite handedness. The competition between the spirals can be tuned to give an intrinsic nonlinearity that each device can function only within a given band of frequencies. This allows individual microrobots to be selectively controlled by varying the frequency of the rotating magnetic field. Here we present the experimental realization and characterization of transchiral micromotors composed of independently driven magnetic helices. We show a swimming micromotor that yields negligible net motion until a critical frequency is reached and a micromotor that changes its translation direction as a function of the frequency of the rotating magnetic field. This work demonstrates a crucial step towards completely decoupled and addressable swimming magnetic microrobots.

Abstract:Engineering the shape of nanoparticles has emerged as an effective approach for optimizing their physical/chemical properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with their high surface area/volume ratio have opened up exciting opportunities for developing advanced anisotropic materials and facilitating chemical processes that demand high levels of surface interactions. Although the great potential of low-dimensional 2D nanoswimmers has been suggested by theoretical works, very little experimental study has been undertaken thus far. Here we fabricated a low-dimensional magnetic nanomotor based on discotic barium ferrite nanoplates. We demonstrated that the "fuel-to-motion" behavior and the enhanced diffusion of nanoswimmers are not limited to just OD nanospheres or 1D nanorods but are also applicable to 2D nanoplates. In addition, the 2D nanoswimmers showed excellent catalytic performance in removing molecular and particle stains on cloth likely due to their catalytic activity as well as active locomotion that enhanced microconvection of solution. This study validated a new self-powered nanomachine for cleaning application without any requirement of surfactants or external mechanical energy.

Abstract:Effective propulsion of untethered micro-/nanorobots at low Reynolds numbers can offer possibilities for promising biomedical applications. Diverse locomotion modes have been proposed for propulsion at a small scale, and rolling is an alternative method which is significantly effective. Here, we demonstrate mass produced magnetic wheel-shape flaky microswimmers fabricated via a simple and cost-effective method. Locomotion behaviors under vertical rotating magnetic fields were studied, and the propulsion mechanisms were analyzed. They exhibited two modes to swim forward as tumbling and rolling, which relied on the actuating field and the fluid. The rolling microswimmers could be propelled and steered precisely and a high velocity can be easily reached. Forward velocity and transition frequency within diverse fields and fluids were analyzed, and side slip effects when rolling at a camber angle were also observed. Such microswimmers synthesized in bulk with alternative locomotion modes and excellent swimming performances may have potential in low Reynolds number fluids.

Abstract:Because of the small size,controlled mobility,and versatile functionalities,micro-/nanoscale swimmers have drawn great attention and shown various potential applications,ranging from biomedicine to environmental remediation,such as minimal invasive surgery,targeted therapy,cell manipulation,heavy metal ions adsorption in waste water,and so on.Development of micro-/nanoscale swimmers meets different challenges compared with traditional large-size robots,because the Renyolds number is very small (10-5-10-2) in their movement environment,that is,inertia is negligible compared to viscous forces.Such a low Renyolds number leads to that several difficulties must be overcome to actuate and steer the motion of micro-/nanoscale swimmers,including critical design of micro-/nanoscale swimmers whose movement must be non-reciprocal,and appropriate energy supply which can be applied to micro-/nanoscale swimmers constantly.Great efforts have been made to propel micro-/nanoscale swimmers at low Renyolds number,and at present,the propulsion mechanisms can be divided into two aspects:Self-propulsion and propulsion using external fields.The former means that micro-/nanoscale swimmers can obtain and convert energy from their surrounding environment to mechanical energy by themselves,including self-electrophoresis,self-diffusiophoresis,bubble propulsion,and so on.While the latter refers to that the motion of micro-/nanoscale swimmers is propelled by an external field such as electric field,acoustic field,magnetic field and light.Among the propulsion methods,magnetic field has aroused high research interest as one of the most promising means to actuate and steer magnetic micro-/nanoscale swimmers wirelessly,because low-strength magnetic field with low frequency is easy to be obtained and tuned,which is also considered harmless to biological cells and tissues,and decays slowly in living body.In this review article,magnetic micro-/nanoscale swimmers are divided into two aspects and introduced separately:Magnetic field actuated swimmers which are powered and steered by magnetic field,and magnetic-field-steered swimmers whose motion is powered by other means but steered by the magnetic field.On one hand,the power source of micro-/nanoscale swimmers actuated by magnetic field comes from the induced magnetic torque or field gradient,and the magnetic field that has been applied to actuate micro/nanoscale swimmers includes rotating magnetic field,magnetic field with field vector oscillating up and down in a plane,magnetic field with field gradient along or perpendicular to the direction of the field,and so on.Herein,the motion mechanisms and fabrication methods of helical swimmers and flexible swimmers actuated by rotating magnetic field and oscillating magnetic field,respectively,which are inspired by microorganisms in nature,are introduced in detail.Moreover,other kinds of magnetic swimmers,such as U-shaped microrobot actuated by magnetic field gradient,magnetic device pushed along a surface by a rotating dipole field,nickel nanowire propelled near a patterned solid surface by rotating magnetic field,and so on,are also discussed.On the other hand,we describe several kinds of magnetic micro-/nanoscale swimmers whose motion are powered by self-electrophoresis,bubble or metabolism,and steered by magnetic field,such as multi-segment nanorod based nanomotors,microtubular jet engines,Janus microparticles and magnetotactic bacteria.Herein,the magnetic field is only used to control the motion direction of swimmers and has no effect on the swimming speed.In summary,we have overviewed the recent research progress on the application of magnetic field in micro/ nanoswimmers,and introduced relevant mechanisms in this work,which could pave the way for the research and development of swimming machines and robots at small scales.

Abstract:Recent strides in micro- and nanofabrication technology have enabled researchers to design and develop new micro- and nanorobots for biomedicine and environmental monitoring. Due to its non-invasive remote actuation and convenient navigation abilities, magnetic propulsion has been widely used in micro- and nanoscale robotic systems. In this article, a highly efficient Janus microdimer swimmer propelled by a rotating uniform magnetic field was investigated experimentally and numerically. The velocity of the Janus microdimer swimmer can be modulated by adjusting the magnetic field frequency with a maximum speed of 133 μm·s−1 (≈13.3 body length s−1) at the frequency of 32 Hz. Fast and accurate navigation of these Janus microdimer swimmers in complex environments and near obstacles was also demonstrated. This efficient propulsion behavior of the new Janus microdimer swimmer holds considerable promise for diverse future practical applications ranging from nanoscale manipulation and assembly to nanomedicine.

Abstract:State-of-the-art biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery and laparoscopic surgery are extremely challenging because of the small length scales, the requirements of wireless manipulation, operational accuracy, and precise localization. In this regard, miniaturized magnetic soft robotic swimmers (MSRS) are attractive candidates since they offer a contactless mode of operation for precise path maneuvering. Inspired by nature, researchers have designed these small-scale intelligent machines to demonstrate enhanced swimming performance through viscous fluidic media using different modes of propulsion. In this review paper, we identify and classify nature-inspired basic swimming modes that have been optimized over large evolutionary timescales. For example, ciliary swimmers like Paramecium and Coleps are covered with tiny hairlike filaments (cilia) that beat rhythmically using coordinated wave movements for propulsion and to gather food. Undulatory swimmers such as spermatozoa and midge larvae use traveling body waves to push the surrounding fluid for effective propulsion through highly viscous environments. Helical swimmers like bacteria rotate their slender whiskers (flagella) for locomotion through stagnant viscid fluids. Essentially, all the three modes of swimming employ nonreciprocal motion to achieve spatial asymmetry. We provide a mechanistic understanding of magnetic-field-induced spatiotemporal symmetry-breaking principles adopted by MSRS for the effective propulsion at such small length scales. Furthermore, theoretical and computational tools that can precisely predict the magnetically driven large deformation fluid–structure interaction of these MSRS are discussed. Here, we present a holistic descriptive review of the recent developments in these smart material systems covering the wide spectrum of their fabrication techniques, nature-inspired design, biomedical applications, swimming strategies, magnetic actuation, and modeling approaches. Finally, we present the future prospects of these promising material systems. Specifically, synchronous tracking and noninvasive imaging of these external agents during in vivo clinical applications still remains a daunting task. Furthermore, their experimental demonstrations have mostly been limited to in vitro and ex vivo phantom models where the dynamics of the testing conditions are quite different compared the in vivo conditions. Additionally, multi-shape morphing and multi-stimuli-responsive modalities of these active structures demand further advancements in 4D printing avenues. Their multi-state configuration as an active solid-fluid continuum would require the development of multi-scale models. Eventually, adding multiple levels of intelligence would enhance their adaptivity, functionalities, and reliability during critical biomedical applications.

Abstract:Recently, there has been much progress in creating microswimmers or microrobots capable of controlled propulsion in fluidic environments. These microswimmers have numerous possible applications in biomedicine, microfabrication, and sensing. One type of effective microrobot consists of rigid magnetic helical microswimmers that are propelled when rotated at a range of frequencies by an external rotating magnetic field. Here we focus on investigating which magnetic dipoles and helical geometries optimally lead to linear velocity-frequency response, which may be desirable for the precise control and positioning of microswimmers. We identify a class of optimal magnetic field moments. We connect our results to the wobbling behavior previously observed and studied in helical microswimmers. In contrast to previous studies, we find that when the full helical geometry is taken into account, wobble-free motion is not possible for magnetic fields rotating in a plane. Our results compare well quantitatively to previously reported experiments, validating the theoretical analysis method. Finally, in the context of our optimal moments, we identify helical geometries for minimization of wobbling and maximization of swimming velocities.

Abstract:Abstract Microscale swimming robots have been envisaged for many biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery, where the microrobot will be expected to navigate in a fluid environment while carrying a payload. We show that such a payload does not have to be physically bound to the swimmer, but may be instead manipulated by the microrobot through hydrodynamic interaction. We consider a magnetically actuated artificial microswimmer, whose locomotion induces a disturbance velocity field in the fluid, which moves a cargo particle in its vicinity. The problem investigated in this paper is therefore one of coupled locomotion-manipulation of two bodies in a fluid. The swimmer is actuated by a uniform, rotating magnetic field of constant strength leading to net motion in the direction perpendicular to the plane of rotation if the frequency associated with the periodic magnetic field is above a critical frequency. Below this critical frequency, the swimmer tumbles in place without net locomotion. Controlled motion of the particle and swimmer is achieved by switching the planes of rotation of the magnetic field and the frequency of the magnetic field above and below the critical frequency. The results of this paper show that microswimmers can be utilized as mobile manipulators of microparticles in a fluid.
Highly Efficient Freestyle Magnetic Nanoswimmer

Abstract:The unique swimming strategies of natural microorganisms have inspired recent development of magnetic micro/nanorobots powered by artificial helical or flexible flagella. However, as artificial nanoswimmers with unique geometries are being developed, it is critical to explore new potential modes for kinetic optimization. For example, the freestyle stroke is the most efficient of the competitive swimming strokes for humans. Here we report a new type of magnetic nanorobot, a symmetric multilinked two-arm nanoswimmer, capable of efficient "freestyle" swimming at low Reynolds numbers. Excellent agreement between the experimental observations and theoretical predictions indicates that the powerful "freestyle" propulsion of the two-arm nanorobot is attributed to synchronized oscillatory deformations of the nanorobot under the combined action of magnetic field and viscous forces. It is demonstrated for the first time that the nonplanar propulsion gait due to the cooperative "freestyle" stroke of the two magnetic arms can be powered by a plane oscillatory magnetic field. These two-arm nanorobots are capable of a powerful propulsion up to 12 body lengths per second, along with on-demand speed regulation and remote navigation. Furthermore, the nonplanar propulsion gait powered by the consecutive swinging of the achiral magnetic arms is more efficient than that of common chiral nanohelical swimmers. This new swimming mechanism and its attractive performance opens new possibilities in designing remotely actuated nanorobots for biomedical operation at the nanoscale.

Abstract:<p>Inspired by the movement of bacteria and other microorganisms, researchers have developed artificial helical micro‐ and nanorobots that can perform corkscrew locomotion or helical path swimming under external energy actuation. In this paper, for the first time the locomotion of nonhelical multifunctional nanorobots that can swim in helical klinotactic trajectories, similarly to rod‐shaped bacteria, under rotating magnetic fields is investigated. These nanorobots consist of a rigid ferromagnetic nickel head connected to a rhodium tail by a flexible hydrogel‐based hollow hinge composed of chemically responsive chitosan and alginate multilayers. This design allows nanoswimmers switching between different dynamic behaviors—from in‐plane tumbling to helical klinotactic swimming—by varying the rotating magnetic field frequency and strength. It also adds a rich spectrum of swimming capabilities that can be adjusted by varying the type of applied magnetic fields and/or frequencies. A theoretical model is developed to analyze the propulsion mechanisms and predict the swimming behavior at distinct rotating magnetic frequencies. The model shows good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, the biomedical capabilities of the nanoswimmers as drug delivery platforms are demonstrated. Unlike previous designs constitute metallic segments, the proposed nanoswimmers can encapsulate drugs into their hollow hinge and successfully release them to cells.</p>

Abstract:Given the low cost of batch fabrication of micro/nanorobots controlled by a magnetic field, we propose herein micro/nanorobots fabricated from helical carbon nanowires. We solve the critical problems of dispersion, cutting, and screening of the appropriate length of helical carbon nanowires and fabricate helical carbon nanowire robots (HCNRs) from 2 to 8 μm in length. We investigate the magnetic-field-controlled motion of HCNRs less than 8 μm long immersed in a low-Reynolds-number liquid. The results confirm that HCNRs have two modes of motion: translating in rotational mode and rolling. HCNRs can capture and transport small particles, which constitutes a new method to transport nanoparticles by using helical micro/nanorobots. The results show that the translational speed of HCNRs depends on the rotating-magnetic-field frequency and strength and, in particular, on the length of the helical nanowires, with the highest speed reaching 40 μm/s (13.1 body lengths per second). The configuration for maximum translational speed is a 3.05-μm-long HCNR in a 40 G magnetic field at a frequency of 60 Hz. These results demonstrate that HCNRs have good mobility and can be accurately manipulated in a microchannel chip.

Abstract:A simple and general fabrication method for helical swimming micromachines by direct laser writing and e‐beam evaporation is demonstrated. The magnetic helical devices exhibit varying magnetic shape anisotropy, yet always generate corkscrew motion using a rotating magnetic field. They also exhibit good swimming performance and are capable of pick‐and‐place micromanipulation in 3D. Cytotoxicity of the devices was investigated using mouse myoblasts.

Abstract:Physics governing the locomotion of microorganisms and other microsystems is dominated by viscous damping. An effective swimming strategy involves the non-reciprocal and periodic deformations of the considered body. Here, we show that a magnetocapillary-driven self-assembly, composed of three soft ferromagnetic beads, is able to swim along a liquid-air interface when powered by an external magnetic field. More importantly, we demonstrate that trajectories can be fully controlled, opening ways to explore low Reynolds number swimming. This magnetocapillary system spontaneously forms by self-assembly, allowing miniaturization and other possible applications such as cargo transport or solvent flows.

Abstract:Inspired by flagellar bacteria, helical microswimmers are proposed in many biomedical applications due to their efficient propulsion at low Reynolds numbers. And the ability to swim through a confined environment such as a blood capillary is an urgent issue to further expand their functions both in vivo and in vitro. Herein, we report an inorganic but soft helical microswimmer that can accurately navigate and achieve self-adaptive locomotion driven by a weak magnetic field. The microswimmer is made via nanomembrane self-rolling method. The motion of helical microswimmer is influenced by its structures such as size and pitch, which can be precisely manipulated by strain engineering during fabrication. Self-adaptive motion is demonstrated in a confined capillary filled with viscous fluid. This helical microswimmer is expected as a magnetic microtool applied to thrombosis treatment as a combination of rigid inorganic materials and soft helical structure.

Abstract:The remarkable efficiency and dynamics of micromachines in living organisms have inspired researchers to make artificial microrobots for targeted drug delivery, chemical sensing, cargo transport, and waste remediation applications. While several self- and directed-propulsion mechanisms have been discovered, the phoretic force has to be generated via either asymmetric surface functionalization or sophisticated geometric design of microrobots. As a result, many symmetric structures assembled from isotropic colloids are ruled out as viable microrobot possibilities. Here, we propose to utilize orientation control to actuate axially symmetric micro-objects with homogeneous surface properties, such as linear chains assembled from superparamagnetic microspheres. We demonstrate that the fore-and-aft symmetry of a horizontal chain can be broken by tilting it with an angle relative to the substrate under a two-dimensional magnetic field. A superimposed alternating current electric field propels the tilted chains. Our experiments and numerical simulation confirm that the electrohydrodynamic flow along the electrode is unbalanced surrounding the tilted chain, generating hydrodynamic stresses that both propel the chain and reorient it slightly toward the substrate. Our work takes advantage of external fields, where the magnetic field, as a driving wheel and brake, controls chain orientation and direction, while the electric field, as an engine, provides power for locomotion. Without the need to create complex-shaped micromotors with intricate building blocks, our work reveals a propulsion mechanism that breaks the symmetry of hydrodynamic flow by manipulating the orientation of a microscopic object.

Abstract:Microrobots have the potential to impact many areas such as microsurgery, micromanipulation and minimally invasive sensing. Due to their small size, microrobots swim in a regime that is governed by low Reynolds number hydrodynamics. In this paper, we consider small scale artificial swimmers that are fabricated using ferromagnetic filaments and locomote in response to time varying external magnetic fields. We motivate the design of previously proposed control laws using tools from geometric mechanics and also demonstrate how new control laws can be synthesized to generate net translation in such swimmers. We further describe how to modify these control inputs to make the swimmers track rich trajectories in the workspace by investigating stability properties of their limit cycles in the orientation angles phase space. Following a systematic design optimization, we develop a principled approach to encode internal magnetization distributions in millimeter scale ferromagnetic filaments. We verify and demonstrate this procedure experimentally and finally show translation, trajectory tracking and turning in place locomotion in these optimal swimmers using a Helmholtz coils setup.

Abstract:Untethered and wirelessly-controlled microrobots have many applications in the field of biomedicine. Therefore, many laboratories and scientists have invested more scientific research into magnetic microrobots which can make more contributions to medical care. Many magnetic field devices and microrobots are manufactured. In the development of micro-robots, helical microrobots have been well developed. Rigid-body robots account for the majority of these, but they may cause damage to human organs during treatment. However, soft and deformable robots can relieve more medical restrictions. In general, helical microrobots are driven by uniform fields which have their own limitations while the gradient magnetic field can relieve more restrictions and have more functions. This paper presents a flexible deformable helical swimmer controlled in a rotating gradient magnetic field. Helical swimmers are covered with magnetic nano-particles and the helical structure is derived from the inner fiber structure of the lotus root. The soft helical swimmers are controlled to swim several special trajectories in the rotating gradient magnetic field and we analyze the frequency and other factors for velocity or other effects.

Abstract:The last decade has seen a surge of interest in the field of catalytically propelled micro‐ and nanoswimmers for their potential use in biomedical applications, such as biosensing, biopsy, targeted drug delivery, and on‐the‐fly chemistry. However, to fully utilize these devices, precise control over their motion is essential. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly understand their locomotion mechanisms. Herein, the currently accepted mechanisms for propulsion are discussed, which are self‐electrophoresis, self‐diffusiophoresis, and bubble recoil. Additionally, the concept of using multilocomotive mechanisms as a solution to achieve fully autonomous navigation is explored. Moreover, recent advances in the design of these devices are explored.
