Abstract:Mental health and psychological distress are rising in adults, showing the importance of wellbeing promotion, support, and technique practice that is effective and accessible. Interactive social robots have been tested to deliver health programs but have not been explored to deliver wellbeing technique training in detail. A pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted to explore the feasibility of an autonomous humanoid social robot to deliver a brief mindful breathing technique to promote information around wellbeing. It contained two conditions: brief technique training ('Technique') and control designed to represent a simple wait-list activity to represent a relationship-building discussion ('Simple Rapport'). This trial also explored willingness to discuss health-related topics with a robot. Recruitment uptake rate through convenience sampling was high (53%). A total of 230 participants took part (mean age = 29 years) with 71% being higher education students. There were moderate ratings of technique enjoyment, perceived usefulness, and likelihood to repeat the technique again. Interaction effects were found across measures with scores varying across gender and distress levels. Males with high distress and females with low distress who received the simple rapport activity reported greater comfort to discuss non-health topics than males with low distress and females with high distress. This trial marks a notable step towards the design and deployment of an autonomous wellbeing intervention to investigate the impact of a brief robot-delivered mindfulness training program for a sub-clinical population.

Abstract:Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are able to form pathogenic polymicrobial communities. P. aeruginosa colonizes and kills hyphae but is unable to attach to yeast. It is unknown why the interaction of P. aeruginosa is different with yeast than with hyphae. Here we aim to evaluate the role of P. aeruginosa chitin-binding protein (CbpD) in its physical interaction with C. albicans hyphae or yeast, based on surface thermodynamic and atomic force microscopic analyses. A P. aeruginosa mutant lacking CbpD was unable to express strong adhesion forces with hyphae (-2.9 nN) as compared with the parent strain P. aeruginosa PAO1 (-4.8 nN) and showed less adhesion to hyphae. Also blocking of CbpD using N-acetyl-glucosamine yielded a lower adhesion force (-4.3 nN) with hyphae. Strong adhesion forces were restored after complementing the expression of CbpD in P. aeruginosa PAO1 ΔcbpD yielding an adhesion force of -5.1 nN. These observations were confirmed with microscopic evaluation of adhesion tests. Regardless of the absence or presence of CbpD on the bacterial cell surfaces, or their blocking, P. aeruginosa experienced favorable thermodynamic conditions for adhesion with hyphae, which were absent with yeast. In addition, adhesion forces with yeast were less than 0.5 nN in all cases. Concluding, CbpD in P. aeruginosa is responsible for strong physical interactions with C. albicans hyphae. The development of this interaction requires time due to the fact that CbpDs have to invade the outermost mannoprotein layer on the hyphal cell surfaces. In order to do this, thermodynamic conditions at the outermost cell surfaces have to be favorable.
Creating a Robot Coach for Mindfulness and Wellbeing: A Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Social robots are starting to become incorporated into daily lives by assisting in the promotion of physical and mental wellbeing. This paper investigates the use of social robots for delivering mindfulness sessions. We created a teleoperated robotic platform that enables an experienced human coach to conduct the sessions in a virtual manner by replicating upper body and head pose in real time. The coach is also able to view the world from the robot's perspective and make a conversation with participants by talking and listening through the robot. We studied how participants interacted with a teleoperated robot mindfulness coach over a period of 5 weeks and compared with the interactions another group of participants had with a human coach. The mindfulness sessions delivered by both types of coaching invoked positive responses from the participants for all the sessions. We found that the participants rated the interactions with human coach consistently high in all aspects. However, there is a longitudinal change in the ratings for the interaction with the teleoperated robot for the aspects of motion and conversation. We also found that the participants' personality traits -- conscientiousness and neuroticism influenced the perceptions of the robot coach.

Abstract:Background For robots to be effectively used in health applications, they need to display appropriate social behaviors. A fundamental requirement in all social interactions is the ability to engage, maintain, and demonstrate attention. Attentional behaviors include leaning forward, self-disclosure, and changes in voice pitch. Objective This study aimed to examine the effect of robot attentional behaviors on user perceptions and behaviors in a simulated health care interaction. Methods A parallel randomized controlled trial with a 1:1:1:1 allocation ratio was conducted. We randomized participants to 1 of 4 experimental conditions before engaging in a scripted face-to-face interaction with a fully automated medical receptionist robot. Experimental conditions included a self-disclosure condition, voice pitch change condition, forward lean condition, and neutral condition. Participants completed paper-based postinteraction measures relating to engagement, perceived robot attention, and perceived robot empathy. We video recorded interactions and coded for participant attentional behaviors. Results A total of 181 participants were recruited from the University of Auckland. Participants who interacted with the robot in the forward lean and self-disclosure conditions found the robot to be significantly more stimulating than those who interacted with the robot in the voice pitch or neutral conditions (P=.03). Participants in the forward lean, self-disclosure, and neutral conditions found the robot to be significantly more interesting than those in the voice pitch condition (P<.001). Participants in the forward lean and self-disclosure conditions spent significantly more time looking at the robot than participants in the neutral condition (P<.001). Significantly, more participants in the self-disclosure condition laughed during the interaction (P=.01), whereas significantly more participants in the forward lean condition leant toward the robot during the interaction (P<.001). Conclusions The use of self-disclosure and forward lean by a health care robot can increase human engagement and attentional behaviors. Voice pitch changes did not increase attention or engagement. The small effects with regard to participant perceptions are potentially because of the limitations in self-report measures or a lack of comparison for most participants who had never interacted with a robot before. Further research could explore the use of self-disclosure and forward lean using a within-subjects design and in real health care settings.

A Robotic Positive Psychology Coach to Improve College Students' Wellbeing

Abstract:A significant number of college students suffer from mental health issues that impact their physical, social, and occupational outcomes. Various scalable technologies have been proposed in order to mitigate the negative impact of mental health disorders. However, the evaluation for these technologies, if done at all, often reports mixed results on improving users' mental health. We need to better understand the factors that align a user's attributes and needs with technology-based interventions for positive outcomes. In psychotherapy theory, therapeutic alliance and rapport between a therapist and a client is regarded as the basis for therapeutic success. In prior works, social robots have shown the potential to build rapport and a working alliance with users in various settings. In this work, we explore the use of a social robot coach to deliver positive psychology interventions to college students living in on-campus dormitories. We recruited 35 college students to participate in our study and deployed a social robot coach in their room. The robot delivered daily positive psychology sessions among other useful skills like delivering the weather forecast, scheduling reminders, etc. We found a statistically significant improvement in participants' psychological wellbeing, mood, and readiness to change behavior for improved wellbeing after they completed the study. Furthermore, students' personality traits were found to have a significant association with intervention efficacy. Analysis of the post-study interview revealed students' appreciation of the robot's companionship and their concerns for privacy.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the potential of using a social robot in speech therapy interventions in children. A descriptive and explorative case study design was implemented involving the intervention for language disorder in five children with different needs with an age ranging from 9 to 12 years. Children participated in sessions with a NAO-type robot in individual sessions. Qualitative methods were used to collect data on aspects of viability, usefulness, barriers and facilitators for the child as well as for the therapist in order to obtain an indication of the effects on learning and the achievement of goals. The main results pointed out the affordances and possibilities of the use of a NAO robot in achieving speech therapy and educational goals. A NAO can contribute towards eliciting motivation, readiness towards learning and improving attention span of the children. The results of the study showed the potential that NAO has in therapy and education for children with different disabilities. More research is needed to gain insight into how a NAO can be applied best in speech therapy to make a more inclusive education conclusions.

Abstract:Social robots are becoming an integrated part of our daily life due to their ability to provide companionship and entertainment. A subfield of robotics, Socially Assistive Robotics (SAR), is particularly suitable for expanding these benefits into the healthcare setting because of its unique ability to provide cognitive, social, and emotional support. This paper presents our recent research on developing SAR by evaluating the ability of a life-like conversational social robot, called Ryan, to administer internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) to older adults with depression. For Ryan to administer the therapy, we developed a dialogue-management system, called Program-R. Using an accredited CBT manual for the treatment of depression, we created seven hour-long iCBT dialogues and integrated them into Program-R using Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML). To assess the effectiveness of Robot-based iCBT and users' likability of our approach, we conducted an HRI study with a cohort of elderly people with mild-to-moderate depression over a period of four weeks. Quantitative analyses of participant's spoken responses (e.g. word count and sentiment analysis), face-scale mood scores, and exit surveys, strongly support the notion robot-based iCBT is a viable alternative to traditional human-delivered therapy.

Abstract:Introduction: Underlying mechanisms of speech perception masked by background speakers, a common daily listening condition, are often investigated using various and lengthy psychophysical tests. The presence of a social agent, such as an interactive humanoid NAO robot, may help maintain engagement and attention. However, such robots potentially have limited sound quality or processing speed. Methods: As a first step toward the use of NAO in psychophysical testing of speech- in-speech perception, we compared normal-hearing young adults' performance when using the standard computer interface to that when using a NAO robot to introduce the test and present all corresponding stimuli. Target sentences were presented with colour and number keywords in the presence of competing masker speech at varying target-to-masker ratios. Sentences were produced by the same speaker, but voice differences between the target and masker were introduced using speech synthesis methods. To assess test performance, speech intelligibility and data collection duration were compared between the computer and NAO setups. Human-robot interaction was assessed using the Negative Attitude Toward Robot Scale (NARS) and quantification of behavioural cues (backchannels). Results: Speech intelligibility results showed functional similarity between the computer and NAO setups. Data collection durations were longer when using NAO. NARS results showed participants had a relatively positive attitude toward "situations of interactions" with robots prior to the experiment, but otherwise showed neutral attitudes toward the "social influence" of and "emotions in interaction" with robots. The presence of more positive backchannels when using NAO suggest higher engagement with the robot in comparison to the computer. Discussion: Overall, the study presents the potential of the NAO for presenting speech materials and collecting psychophysical measurements for speech-in-speech perception.

The Attitude of Elderly and Young Adults Towards a Humanoid Robot as a Facilitator for Social Interaction

Abstract:The main objective of this research was to gain insight in the attitude that groups of elderly and young students have towards social robots. A total of 52 participants (24 elderly vs. 28 students) took part in a short-term interaction with a humanoid social robot. In small groups of two to four people, they engaged in a conversation with a Nao robot. Their attitude was measured before and after the interaction using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) questionnaire. Furthermore, the role of the robot as a facilitator for conversation was assessed by observing the interaction between individuals after the robot was removed. This research explored the use of social robots as a means to improve socialization between individuals rather than aiming to replace the human contact. Results from the questionnaire and an additional observational analysis showed a positive attitude towards the robot and the interaction from both age groups. After the interaction, elderly perceived the robot as significantly more useful than students, which could be assigned to a difference in needs and expectations they had from it. Furthermore, anxiety towards the robot for both groups decreased after the interaction. Future research can investigate the effect of long-term interaction with a similar robot. In the long-term, social robots could possibly be deployed to decrease loneliness, a common issue among elderly.

Abstract:Abstract Social Assistive Robotics is increasingly being used in care settings to provide psychosocial support and interventions for the elderly with cognitive impairments. Most of these social robots have provided timely stimuli to the elderly at home and in care centres, including keeping them active and boosting their mood. However, previous investigations have registered shortcomings in these robots, particularly in their ability to satisfy an essential human need: the need for companionship. Reports show that the elderly tend to lose interests in these social robots after the initial excitement as the novelty wears out and the monotonous familiarity becomes all too familiar. This paper presents our research facilitating conversations between a social humanoid robot, Nadine, and cognitively impaired elderly at a nursing home. We analysed the effectiveness of human–humanoid interactions between our robot and 14 elderly over 29 sessions. We used both objective tools (based on computer vision methods) and subjective tools (based on observational scales) to evaluate the recorded videos. Our findings showed that our subjects engaged positively with Nadine, suggesting that their interaction with the robot could improve their well-being by compensating for some of their emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial deficiencies. We detected emotions associated with cognitively impaired elderly during these interactions. This study could help understand the expectations of the elderly and the current limitations of Social Assistive Robots. Our research is aligned with all the ethical recommendations by the NTU Institutional Review Board.

Abstract:The usage of social robots in psychotherapy has gained interest in various applications. In the context of therapy for children with socio-emotional impairments, for example autism spectrum conditions, the first approaches have already been successfully evaluated in research. In this context, the robot can be seen as a tool for therapists to foster interaction with the children. To ensure a successful integration of social robots into therapy sessions, an intuitive and comprehensive interface for the therapist is needed to guarantee save and appropriate human-robot interaction. This publication addresses the development of a graphical user interface for robot-assisted therapy to train socio-emotional skills in children on the autism spectrum. The software follows a generic and modular approach. Furthermore, a robotic middleware is used to control the robot and the user interface is based on a local web application. During therapy sessions, the therapist interface is used to control the robot’s reactions and provides additional information from emotion and arousal recognition software. The approach is implemented with the humanoid robot Pepper (Softbank Robotics). A pilot study is carried out with four experts from a child and youth psychiatry to evaluate the feasibility and user experience of the therapist interface. In sum, the user experience and usefulness can be rated positively.

Abstract:Social robotics is an emerging field with a high level of innovation. For many years, it was a concept framed in the literature and theoretical approaches. Scientific and technological advances have made it possible for robots to progressively make their way into different areas of our society, and now, they are ready to make the leap out of the industry and extend their presence into our daily lives. In this sense, user experience plays a fundamental role in achieving a smooth and natural interaction between robots and humans. This research focused on the user experience approach in terms of the embodiment of a robot, centring on its movements, gestures, and dialogues. The aim was to investigate how the interaction between robotic platforms and humans takes place and what differential aspects should be considered when designing the robot tasks. To achieve this objective, a qualitative and quantitative study was conducted based on a real interview between several human users and the robotic platform. The data were gathered by recording the session and having each user complete a form. The results showed that participants generally enjoyed interacting with the robot and found it engaging, which led to greater trust and satisfaction. However, delays and errors in the robot's responses caused frustration and disconnection. The study found that incorporating embodiment into the design of the robot improved the user experience, and the robot's personality and behaviour were significant factors. It was concluded that robotic platforms and their appearance, movements, and way of communicating have a decisive influence on the user's opinion and the way they interact.

Robots as Mental Health Coaches: A Study of Emotional Responses to Technology-Assisted Stress Management Tasks Using Physiological Signals

Abstract:The current study investigated the effectiveness of social robots in facilitating stress management interventions for university students by evaluating their physiological responses. We collected electroencephalogram (EEG) brain activity and Galvanic Skin Responses (GSRs) together with self-reported questionnaires from two groups of students who practiced a deep breathing exercise either with a social robot or a laptop. From GSR signals, we obtained the change in participants' arousal level throughout the intervention, and from the EEG signals, we extracted the change in their emotional valence using the neurometric of Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA). While subjective perceptions of stress and user experience did not differ significantly between the two groups, the physiological signals revealed differences in their emotional responses as evaluated by the arousal–valence model. The Laptop group tended to show a decrease in arousal level which, in some cases, was accompanied by negative valence indicative of boredom or lack of interest. On the other hand, the Robot group displayed two patterns; some demonstrated a decrease in arousal with positive valence indicative of calmness and relaxation, and others showed an increase in arousal together with positive valence interpreted as excitement. These findings provide interesting insights into the impact of social robots as mental well-being coaches on students' emotions particularly in the presence of the novelty effect. Additionally, they provide evidence for the efficacy of physiological signals as an objective and reliable measure of user experience in HRI settings.

Abstract:The development of robots that are truly sociable requires understanding how human interactions can be applied to the interaction between humans and robots. A sociable robot must be able to interact with people taking into account aspects like verbal and non-verbal communications (emotions, postures, gestures). This work presents a social robot which main goal is to provide assistance to older people in carrying out their daily activities (through suggestions or reminders). In addition, the robot presents non-verbal communications like perceiving emotions and displaying human identifiable emotions in order to express empathy. A prototype of the robot is being tested in a daycare center in the northern area of Portugal.

Abstract:We developed an innovative system that combines Natural Language Understanding (NLU), a curated knowledge base, and the efficient management of a Large Language Model (LLM) to support motivational health coaching. Using Rasa as the core framework, we enhanced it by integrating the GPT-3.5-turbo model. Users opt into reflective dialogues during conversations. When they respond to open-ended questions, their input goes directly to the GPT-3.5-turbo model, allowing for more flexible responses. To provide curated trustworthy content, we integrated a knowledge provision component that searches a PDF-based knowledge base and generates user-friendly responses using Retrieval-Augmented Generation. We tested the system in a real-world scenario by deploying it on a Nao robot in seven older adults' homes for 1–2 weeks, encouraging positive behavioral changes in some users. Our system serves as a valuable foundation for building an even more integrated, personalized system that can connect with other Application Programing Interfaces (APIs) and integrate with home sensors and edge devices.

Abstract:The social applications of robots possess intrinsic challenges with respect to social paradigms and heterogeneity of different groups. These challenges can be in the form of social acceptability, anthropomorphism, likeability, past experiences with robots etc. In this paper, we have considered a group of neurotypical adults to describe how different voices and motion types of the NAO robot can have effect on the perceived safety, anthropomorphism, likeability, animacy, and perceived intelligence of the robot. In addition, prior robot experience has also been taken into consideration to perform this analysis using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Further, we also demonstrate that these different modalities instigate different physiological responses in the person. This classification has been done using two different deep learning approaches, 1) Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and 2) Gramian Angular Fields on the Blood Volume Pulse (BVP) data recorded. Both of these approaches achieve better than chance accuracy 25% for a 4 class classification.

Abstract:Social robots are coming to our homes and have already been used to help humans in a number of ways in geriatric care. This article aims to develop a framework that enables social robots to conduct regular clinical screening interviews in geriatric care, such as cognitive evaluation, falls' risk evaluation, and pain rating. We develop a social robot with essential features to enable clinical screening interviews, including a conversational interface, face tracking, an interaction handler, attention management, robot skills, and cloud service management. Besides, a general clinical screening interview management (GCSIM) model is proposed and implemented. The GCSIM enables social robots to handle various types of clinical questions and answers, evaluate and score responses, engage interviewees during conversations, and generate reports on their well-being. These reports can be used to evaluate the progression of cognitive impairment, risk of falls, pain level, and so on by caregivers or physicians. Such a clinical screening capability allows for early detection and treatment planning in geriatric care. The framework was developed and implemented on our 3-D-printed social robot. It was tested on 30 older adults with different ages, achieved satisfying results, and received their high confidence and trust in the use of this robot for human well-being assessment. Note to Practitioners—This article is motivated by the goal of using a social robot to perform geriatric well-being assessment through clinical screening interviews. In order to conduct clinical screening interviews, the social robot needs the following essential features: having a verbal conversational interface, adapting to different types of clinical screening interviews, scoring and evaluating answers, having nondirective listening responses, and enabling directive listening responses. The proposed general clinical screening interview management (GCSIM)-model demonstrates these capabilities on the social robot. The robot can give structured clinical screening interviews with different question–answer sheets. This will help advance assistive technologies for use by geriatric physicians, nurses, and social service professionals to keep older adults healthy, safe, and independent at home. Robots will become more and more essential in working alongside geriatric practitioners to help monitor older adults at home and to provide early detection and warning of cognitive/mental health problems, falls' risk, and so on. This early detection property can improve quality-of-care and help older adults remain living at home.
