Abstract:CO2 is a prominent example for an exhaust gas, and it is known for its high impact on global warming. Therefore, carbon capture from CO2 emissions of industrial processes is increasingly important to halt and prevent the disruptive consequences of global warming. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as porous nanomaterials have been shown to selectively adsorb CO2 in high quantities and with high CO2/N2 selectivity. Interactions with amines are recognized to selectively adsorb CO2 and help capture it from exhaust emissions. Herein, a novel COF (Me3TFB-(NH2)2BD), which was not accessible via a direct condensation reaction, was synthetized by dynamic linker exchange starting with Me3TFB-BD. Despite the linker exchange, the porosity of the COF was largely maintained, resulting in a high BET surface area of 1624 ± 89 m2/g. The CO2 and N2 adsorption isotherms at 273 and 295 K were studied to determine the performance in carbon capture at flue gas conditions. Me3TFB-(NH2)2BD adsorbs 1.12 ± 0.26 and 0.72 ± 0.07 mmol/g of CO2 at 1 bar and 273 and 295 K, respectively. The COF shows a high CO2/N2 IAST selectivity under flue gas conditions (273 K:83 ± 11, 295 K: 47 ± 11). The interaction of the aromatic amine groups with CO2 is based on physisorption, which is expected to make the regeneration of the material energy efficient.

Abstract:We report the first covalent incorporation of reactive aliphatic amine species into covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This was achieved through the crystallization of an imine-linked COF, termed COF-609-Im, followed by conversion of its imine linkage to base-stable tetrahydroquinoline linkage through aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition, and finally, the covalent incorporation of tris(3-aminopropyl)amine into the framework. The obtained COF-609 exhibits a 1360-fold increase in CO2 uptake capacity compared to the pristine framework and a further 29% enhancement in the presence of humidity. We confirmed the chemistry of framework conversion and corroborated the enhanced CO2 uptake phenomenon with and without humidity through isotope-labeled Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. With this study, we established a new synthetic strategy to access a class of chemisorbents characterized by high affinity to CO2 in dilute sources, such as the air.

Abstract:Ordered open channels found in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) could enable them to adsorb carbon dioxide. However, the frameworks' dense layer architecture results in low porosity that has thus far restricted their potential for carbon dioxide adsorption. Here we report a strategy for converting a conventional 2D COF into an outstanding platform for carbon dioxide capture through channel-wall functionalization. The dense layer structure enables the dense integration of functional groups on the channel walls, creating a new version of COFs with high capacity, reusability, selectivity, and separation productivity for flue gas. These results suggest that channel-wall functional engineering could be a facile and powerful strategy to develop 2D COFs for high-performance gas storage and separation.

Abstract:Functionalized 3D COF‐300s (COF‐300‐X, X = –SO3H, –NO2, –OH, and –NH2) possess excellent CO2 adsorption and separation performances over N2. In‐depth analyses on pore physical characteristics, gas–framework interaction, and gas distribution elucidate the promotion essence from the introduction of functionalized groups. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging adsorbent materials for CO2 capture and separation due to their tunable pore size, periodic permutation, and chemical thermal stability. Herein, four functionalized 3D COF‐300s (COF‐300‐X, X = –SO3H, –NO2, –OH, and –NH2) for CO2 adsorption and separation are studied by using density functional theory and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that four functionalized COF‐300s could create a feasible environment for CO2 adsorption with high accessible surface area, suitable pore size, and high porosity. The CO2 adsorption capacity in COF‐300s could be significantly improved by functionalization. In comparison, the best performing COF‐300‐SO3H shows a superior CO2 adsorption capacity of 6.23 mmol g−1 and a high CO2/N2 selectivity of 393 at 298 K and 100 kPa. The adsorption heat and interaction analyses demonstrate that the CO2 affinity in COF‐300s is enhanced by the introduction of polar functional groups, which renders great CO2 adsorption and separation performances. The gas distribution shows that the adsorption sites are concentrated near the functional groups and the distribution of CO2 in COF‐300‐SO3H has a characteristic of multilayer adsorptions. This work highlights COF‐300‐SO3H as an outperforming adsorbent candidate for CO2 capture and separation.

Abstract:An imine-based nitrogen-rich covalent-organic framework (COF) was successfully synthesized using two triangular building units under solvothermal reaction condition. The gas adsorption properties of the obtained microporous nitrogen-rich COF were investigated. The results indicated that the activated COF material presented good up take capabilities of CO2 and CH4 at 61.2 and 43.4 cm(3).g(-1) at 1 atm and 273 K, respectively, showing its application potential in selective gas capture and separation.

Abstract:Nineteen Plesiomonas shigelloides strains were evaluated for their stability at acidic and slightly alkaline pHs and for their susceptibility to antimicrobial agent-like compounds produced by enteric flora. Most P. shigelloides isolates were rapidly inactivated under high-acid (pH 4 or less) conditions. Screening of enteric bacteria for elaboration of factors active against P. shigelloides revealed two organisms (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus [Enterococcus] faecium) capable of secreting such inhibitory substances. The results of this study suggest some factors potentially important in regulating gastrointestinal colonization by P. shigelloides from environmental sources.

Abstract:Tailorable sorption properties at the molecular level are key for efficient carbon capture and storage and a hallmark of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Although amine functional groups are known to facilitate CO2 uptake, atomistic insights into CO2 sorption by COFs modified with amine-bearing functional groups are scarce. Herein, we present a detailed study of the interactions of carbon dioxide and water with two isostructural hydrazone-linked COFs with different polarities based on the 2,5-diethoxyterephthalohydrazide linker. Varying amounts of tertiary amines were introduced in the COF backbones by means of a copolymerization approach using 2,5-bis(2-(dimethylamino)ethoxy)terephthalohydrazide in different amounts ranging from 25 to 100% substitution of the original DETH linker. The interactions of the frameworks with CO2 and H2O were comprehensively studied by means of sorption analysis, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. We show that the addition of the tertiary amine linker increases the overall CO2 sorption capacity normalized by the surface area and of the heat of adsorption, whereas surface areas and pore size diameters decrease. The formation of ammonium bicarbonate species in the COF pores is shown to occur, revealing the contributing role of water for CO2 uptake by amine-modified porous frameworks.

Covalent Triazine-Based Frameworks with Ultramicropores and High Nitrogen Contents for Highly Selective CO2 Capture

Abstract:Porous organic frameworks (POFs) are a class of porous materials composed of organic precursors linked by covalent bonds. The objective of this work is to develop POFs with both ultramicropores and high nitrogen contents for CO2 capture. Specifically, two covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) with ultramicropores (pores of width <7 Å) based on short (fumaronitrile, FUM) and wide monomers (1,4-dicyanonaphthalene, DCN) were synthesized. The obtained CTF-FUM and CTF-DCN possess excellent chemical and thermal stability with ultramicropores of 5.2 and 5.4 Å, respectively. In addition, they exhibit excellent ability to selectively capture CO2 due to ultramicroporous nature. Especially, CTF-FUM-350 has the highest nitrogen content (27.64%) and thus the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (57.2 cc/g at 298 K) and selectivities for CO2 over N2 and CH4 (102.4 and 20.5 at 298 K, respectively) among all CTF-FUM and CTF-DCN. More impressively, as far as we know, the CO2/CH4 selectivity is larger than that of all reported CTFs and ranks in top 10 among all reported POFs. Dynamic breakthrough curves indicate that both CTFs could indeed separate gas mixtures of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 completely.

Abstract:As a consequence of the accelerated climate change, solutions to capture, store and potentially activate carbon dioxide received increased interest in recent years. Herein, it is demonstrated, that the neural network potential ANI-2x is able to describe nanoporous organic materials at approx. density functional theory accuracy and force field cost, using the example of the recently published two- and three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks HEX-COF1 and 3D-HNU5 and their interaction with CO 2 guest molecules. Along with the investigation of the diffusion behaviour, a wide range of properties of interest is analyzed, such as the structure, pore size distribution and host-guest distribution functions. The workflow developed herein facilitates the estimation of the maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity and is easily generalizable to other systems. Additionally, this work illustrates, that minimum distance distribution functions can be a highly useful tool in understanding the nature of interactions in host-gas systems at the atomic level.

Abstract:Understanding the internal mechanism of CO2 adsorption and separation of COF adsorbent materials is of great significance for high-efficiency carbon capture and storage (CCS). Herein, polyarylether-based covalent organic frameworks (PAE-COFs) structures with functionalized –CN, –COOH, and –C(NH2)NOH groups were evaluated for CO2 adsorption and separation over N2 by using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation and density functional theory (DFT). Our calculation results showed that the adsorption and separation performance of CO2 in COF frameworks was related to the physical characteristics of pores, the types of gas molecules, and the interaction between COFs and gas molecules. JUC-505 modified by –CN functional group provided a feasible microporous environment with moderate specific surface area and porosity, presenting a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 5.14 mmol/g at 273 K and 1 bar. The PAE-COFs structures had good CO2/N2 separation performance, in which the CO2/N2 selectivity of JUC-505-COOH reached up to 90 at 273 K and 1 bar. Interactions analysis showed that the van der Waals and Coulomb interactions between CO2 and the framework were significantly stronger than those between N2 and the framework. Therefore, CO2 had a higher adsorption heat, which led to the larger adsorption capacity and the high selectivity of CO2 over N2. The gas radial distribution functions and 2D density distribution displayed that the CO2 adsorption corresponded to a multi-layer adsorption in frameworks, leading to the high performances of PAE-COFs for CO2 capture and separation.

Abstract:The cognitive intent of a highly ordered and robust adsorbent is extremely sensible and, in this context, Covalent Organic Framework (COF) materials have significantly burgeoned their scope in diverse applications. Herein, a simple time-competent hydrothermal procedure is presented to construct a covalent framework with an ultrahigh surface area of 1428 m2 /g that shows active adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) at variable temperature ranges. Moreover, a facile scalably controlled post-synthetic air liquid interfacial plasma (ALIP) induced protocol is substantiated that explicitly amplifies the surface area of the pristine framework even to a higher value of 2051 m2 /g. The post-synthetic plasma approach presented here led to the rapid enhancement of the surface area of the pristine COF by 43 %, which concurrently advances the CO2 uptake up to 67 %. Hence, the current study may open up a new frontier in the design as well as fine-tune the properties of the covalent framework that unfolds the advanced outlook in addressing the challenges of CO2 capture.
Designing of Organic Bridging Linkers of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

Abstract:The global rate of anthropogenic CO2 emission is rising, which urges the development of efficient carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. Among the various CO2 capture methods, adsorption by the linkers of the Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) materials has received more interest as excellent CO2 adsorbents because of their important role in understanding the interaction mechanism for CO2 adsorption. Here, we investigate the adsorption of CO2 molecules at the center and side positions of several MOF-linkers using molecular cluster models. The interaction between CO2 and the linkers is approximated by computing the binding enthalpy ({\Delta}H) through the first principles-based Density Functional Theory with Grimmes dispersion correction (i.e., B3LYP-D3) and second-order Moller Plesset Theory (MP2). The computed values of {\Delta}H indicate the weak nature of CO2 adsorption on the pristine linkers, hence the strategy of lithium decoration is used to see its impact on the binding strength. Among the various linkers tested, CO2 adsorbing at the side position of the DFBDC-2 linker has strong adsorption with {\Delta}H value of about -35.32 kJ/mol computed by the B3LYP-D3 method. The Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) study reveals that among all the energy terms, the contribution of electrostatic and polarization energy terms to the {\Delta}H value are the most dominant one. Furthermore, the results of Frontier Molecular Orbital Analysis (FMO) revealed that all the linkers remained stable even after Li-decoration. The results of our investigations will direct towards the development and synthesis of novel adsorbents with enhanced CO2 adsorption.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging material family having several potential applications. Their porous framework and redox-active centers enable gas/ion adsorption, allowing them to function as safe, cheap, and tunable electrode materials in next-generation batteries, as well as CO2 adsorption materials for carbon-capture applications. Herein, we develop four polyimide COFs by combining aromatic triamines with aromatic dianhydrides and provide detailed structural and electrochemical characterization. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and powder X-ray diffraction, we achieve a detailed structural characterization, where DFT calculations reveal that the imide bonds prefer to form at an angle with one another, breaking the 2D symmetry, which shrinks the pore width and elongates the pore walls. The eclipsed perpendicular stacking is preferable, while sliding of the COF sheets is energetically accessible in a relatively flat energy landscape with a few metastable regions. We investigate the potential use of these COFs in CO2 adsorption and electrochemical applications. The adsorption and electrochemical properties are related to the structural and chemical characteristics of each COF, giving new insights for advanced material designs. For CO2 adsorption specifically, the two best performing COFs originated from the same triamine building block, which—in combination with force-field calculations—revealed unexpected structure–property relationships. Specific geometries provide a useful framework for Na-ion intercalation with retainable capacities and stable cycle life at a relatively high working potential (>1.5 V vs Na/Na+). Although this capacity is low compared to conventional inorganic Li-ion materials, we show as a proof of principle that these COFs are especially promising for sustainable, safe, and stable Na-aqueous batteries due to the combination of their working potentials and their insoluble nature in water.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been designed and successfully synthesized by condensation reactions of phenyl diboronic acid {C 6 H 4 [B(OH) 2 ] 2 } and hexahydroxytriphenylene [C 18 H 6 (OH) 6 ]. Powder x-ray diffraction studies of the highly crystalline products (C 3 H 2 BO) 6 ·(C 9 H 12 ) 1 (COF-1) and C 9 H 4 BO 2 (COF-5) revealed expanded porous graphitic layers that are either staggered (COF-1, P 6 3 / mmc ) or eclipsed (COF-5, P 6/ mmm ). Their crystal structures are entirely held by strong bonds between B, C, and O atoms to form rigid porous architectures with pore sizes ranging from 7 to 27 angstroms. COF-1 and COF-5 exhibit high thermal stability (to temperatures up to 500° to 600°C), permanent porosity, and high surface areas (711 and 1590 square meters per gram, respectively).

Abstract:Developing novel synthetic strategies to construct crystalline polymeric materials with excellent chemical stability and high carbon capture capacity has become a challenging process. Herein, we report the synthesis of two novel 2D benzobisoxazole-linked covalent organic frameworks (BBO-COFs) utilizing C3-symmetric formyl- and C2-symmetric o-aminophenol-substituted molecular building blocks. The BBO-COFs exhibit excellent water stability, high surface areas, and great CO2 uptake capacities. This general synthetic method affords the opportunity to prepare ordered BBO-based polymeric materials for carbon capture, chemical sensing, and organic electronic applications.

Abstract:Carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCSU) represents an opportunity to mitigate carbon emissions that drive global anthropogenic climate change. Promising materials for CCSU through gas adsorption have been developed by leveraging the porosity, stability, and tunability of extended crystalline coordination polymers called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). While the development of these frameworks has yielded highly effective CO2 sorbents, an in-depth understanding of the properties of MOF pores that lead to the most efficient uptake during sorption would benefit the rational design of more efficient CCSU materials. Though previous investigations of gas-pore interactions often assumed that the internal pore environment was static, discovery of more dynamic behavior represents an opportunity for precise sorbent engineering. Herein, we report a multifaceted in situ analysis following the adsorption of CO2 in MOF-808 variants with different capping agents (formate, acetate, and trifluoroacetate: FA, AA, and TFA, respectively). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis paired with multivariate analysis tools and in situ powder X-ray diffraction revealed unexpected CO2 interactions at the node associated with dynamic behavior of node-capping modulators in the pores of MOF-808, which had previously been assumed to be static. MOF-808-TFA displays two binding modes, resulting in higher binding affinity for CO2. Computational analyses further support these dynamic observations. The beneficial role of these structural dynamics could play an essential role in building a deeper understanding of CO2 binding in MOFs.
