Abstract:Ammonia (NH), is a precursor for the formation of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM), and thus establishing efficient and cost-effective methods to detect ammonia emission is highly desired. Transition metal oxide semiconductors-based sensors for electrochemical gas sensing have been extensively explored. Among various types of semiconductors, tungsten oxide (WO) possesses an anisotropic layered crystalline structure and is recognized as a promising material for gas sensing. However, the performance of commercial WO is unsatisfactory because of its high impedance and low charge transportation efficiency. Thus, the modification of commercial WO is needed to make it an efficient ammonia sensor material. In this work, closely packed WO microspheres with oxygen vacancies were synthesized successfully through a novel two-step hydrothermal route. Our WO showed a good selectivity to ammonia sensing, and its response intensity was 2.6 times higher than that of commercial WO because of its optimized conductivity. Moreover, the mechanism behind its robust ammonia sensing performance was elucidated. The effectiveness of the as-prepared WO microspheres for ammonia sensing also suggests a new strategy for modifying transition metal oxide materials.
Mesoporous tungsten trioxide for highly sensitive and selective detection of ammonia

Abstract:The sensing performance of a mixed-potential NH3 sensor is dependent on the microstructure of its electrode, which can be optimized to enhance the adsorption and diffusion of target gases. Mesoporous tungsten trioxide was prepared using an effective hard template method and applied as a sensitive electrode in a yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte-based mixed-potential NH3 gas sensor. The NH3 detection of the sensor was investigated in a temperature range of 250–650 °C. The sensor exhibited a much better NH3 sensing performance than another sensor based on commercial bulk WO3 under the same conditions. Furthermore, the NH3 sensor based on mesoporous WO3 exhibited a logarithmic response to the NH3 concentration (30–250 ppm). To investigate this response, the specialized microstructure of mesoporous WO3 was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Specifically, the high surface area and well-defined mesopores of the material significantly contributed to the excellent sensing performance. This report provides the first demonstration of the excellent response and sensitivity of an NH3 sensor based on mesoporous WO3 at low temperatures (250–400 °C).Graphical Abstract

Abstract:A series of noble‐metal‐nanoparticle‐decorated nitrogen‐doped ordered mesoporous tungsten oxide (namely Pt/N‐mWO3, Rh/N‐mWO3, Pd/N‐mWO3) are straightforwardly synthesized through a solvent‐pair‐enabled multicomponent coassembly strategy. The obtained Pt/N‐mWO3 materials have ordered mesoporous structure with ultrasmall Pt nanoparticles, rich oxygen vacancies, and metal–metal oxide interfaces, exhibiting superior ammonia sensing performances with a low limit of detection (51.2 ppb). The straightforward synthesis of noble‐metal‐nanoparticle‐decorated ordered mesoporous transition metal oxides remains a great challenge due to the difficulty of balancing the interactions between precursors and templates. Herein, a solvent‐pair‐enabled multicomponent coassembly (SPEMC) strategy is developed for straightforward synthesis of noble‐metal‐nanoparticle‐decorated nitrogen‐doped ordered mesoporous tungsten oxide (abbreviated as NM/N‐mWO3, NM = Pt, Rh, Pd). The amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO‐b‐PS) copolymers coassemble with ammonium metatungstate (AMT) clusters and different kinds of hydrophilic noble metal precursors without phase separation. SPEMC synthesis requires no direct interaction between PEO‐b‐PS and AMT, thus the assembly equilibriums between noble metal precursors and PEO‐b‐PS can be readily controlled. The obtained NM/N‐mWO3 nanocomposites possess ordered mesopores, abundant oxygen vacancies, and metal–metal oxide interfaces. As a result, the Pt/N‐mWO3 sensors exhibit superior ammonia sensing performances with high sensitivity, an ultralow limit of detection (51.2 ppb), good selectivity, and long‐term stability. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that ammonia is oxidized stepwise to NO, NO2−, and NO3− during the sensing process. Moreover, a portable wireless module based on Pt/N‐mWO3 sensor can recognize ppm‐level concentration of ammonia, which lays a solid foundation for its application in various fields.

Abstract:Development of high-performance ammonia (NH3) sensor is imperative for monitoring NH3 in the living environment. In this work, to obtain a high performance NH3 gas sensor, structurally well-defined WO3@SnO2 core shell nanosheets with a controllable thickness of SnO2 shell layer have been employed as sensing materials. The prepared core shell nanosheets were used to obtain a miniaturized gas sensor based on micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS). By tuning the thickness of SnO2 layer via atomic layer deposition, a series of WO3@SnO2 core-shell nanosheets with tunable sensing properties were realized. Particularly, the sensor base on the fabricated WO3@SnO2 nanosheets with 20-nm SnO2 shell layer demonstrated superior gas sensing performance with the highest response (1.55) and selectivity toward 15 ppm NH3 at 200 °C. This remarkable enhancement of NH3 sensing ability could be ascribed to the formation of unique WO3-SnO2 core-shell heterojunction structure. The detailed mechanism was elucidated by the heterojunction-depletion model with the help of specific band alignment.

Abstract:The directional modulation of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) can be effective in developing high-performance gas-sensing materials. Herein, we propose an efficient strategy by modifying ZnWO4 on In2O3 to achieve controllable modulation of oxygen vacancies and energy band structures in ZnWO4/In2O3 heterostructures. The sensor based on optimized ZnWO4/In2O3 exhibits significantly enhanced performance to detect triethylamine, including a lower operating temperature (100 °C), a higher responsivity (Ra/Rg = 221.2 for 100 ppm), and a lower detection limit (500 ppb). In addition, the fabricated sensor exhibits faster response and good selectivity. The improved gas-sensing performance could be attributed to the acid–base interaction between triethylamine gas and ZnWO4, the formation of heterojunctions, and the increase of oxygen vacancies to achieve a synergistic modulation of the chemical and energy band structures. It is anticipated that our current investigation could offer insights and a useful strategy for triethylamine detection.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising materials for chemiresistive gas sensor, while TMD alloys (two chalcogenide or/and metal elements) with tunable electronic structures have drawn little attention in gas sensing. Herein, Mo 0.5 W 0.5 S 2 alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a facile sonication exfoliation method and then tested for ammonia sensing. The crystal structure, geometric morphology, and elemental composition of Mo 0.5 W 0.5 S 2 NPs were investigated. The gas sensing measurements demonstrated Mo 0.5 W 0.5 S 2 NPs with good response to ammonia at 80 °C with a limit of detection down to 500 part per billion (ppb). The sensor also displayed good stability as well as superb selectivity to ammonia in the presence of interferences, such as methanol, acetone, benzene, and cyclohexane. The theoretical calculations revealed Mo and W atoms at edges (such as Mo 0.5 W 0.5 S 2 (010)) of sheet-like NPs as the active sites for ammonia adsorption. Electrons donated by the adsorbed ammonia were combined with holes in p-type Mo 0.5 W 0.5 S 2 NPs, and the concentration of the main charge carrier was reduced, resulting in resistance enhancement.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is a harmful gas contaminant that is part of the nitrogen cycle in our daily lives. Therefore, highly sensitive ammonia sensors are important for environmental protection and human health. However, it is difficult to detect low concentrations of ammonia (<= 50 ppm) using conventional means at room temperature. Tin monoxide (SnO), a member of IV-VI metal monoxides, has attracted much attention due to its low cost, environmental-friendly nature, and higher stability compared with other non-oxide ammonia sensing material like alkaline metal or polymer, which made this material an ideal alternative for ammonia sensor applications. In this work, we fabricated high-sensitive ammonia sensors based on self-assembly SnO nanoshells via a solution method and annealing under 300 degrees C for 1 h. The as fabricated sensors exhibited the response of 313%, 874%, 2757%, 3116%, and 3757% ( increment G/G) under ammonia concentration of 5 ppm, 20 ppm, 50 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200 ppm, respectively. The structure of the nanoshells, which have curved shells that provide shelters for the core and also possess a large surface area, is able to absorb more ammonia molecules, leading to further improvements in the sensitivity. Further, the SnO nanoshells have higher oxygen vacancy densities compared with other metal oxide ammonia sensing materials, enabling it to have higher performance. Additionally, the selectivity of ammonia sensors is also outstanding. We hope this work will provide a reference for the study of similar structures and applications of IV-VI metal monoxides in the gas sensor field.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Co3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized using a hydrothermal method with calcination. The microstructure and surface defects of these materials were investigated systematically. Room temperature gas sensing properties of Co3O4 nanoparticles were tested towards ammonia (NH3). The response value of Co3O4-2 h gas sensor to 200 ppm NH3 is 102.8 with response and recovery time of 65 s and 208 s, respectively. The Co3O4-2 h sensor also exhibited high selectivity, good repeatability and long-term stability. After excluding the impact of specific surface area and grain-size effect on sensitivity, the boosted sensing performance of Co3O4-2 h nanoparticles is mainly attributed to the high Co3+ concentration and the abundant doubly ionized oxygen vacancies (VO¨). This work provides a promising strategy to enhance gas sensing properties of p-type oxides by adjusting charge states of oxygen vacancy.

Abstract:The development of a high-performance sensing material for the detection of ammonia gas is of significant importance due to its wide industrial presence and potential hazard risks. In this article, we report the synthesis of porous and hollow MoO3 (p-h-MoO3) microspheres via the oxidation of MoS2 microsphere templates, which are obtained via self-assembly of MoS2 nanosheets under hydrothermal conditions. The composition and morphology of the p-h-MoO3 microspheres are systematically characterized via microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, and our sensing tests reveals that p-h-MoO3 possesses ultrahigh responsiveness to ammonia gas, which can be further optimized via the selection of a suitable oxidation temperature and time. Additionally, the p-h-MoO3 shows minimal responses to other gaseous molecules, thereby demonstrating significant selectivity toward ammonia. The sensing mechanism of p-h-MoO3 toward ammonia is further investigated to identify the origin of its ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract:The breath ammonia detection is crucial for the evaluation of the pathological state. Among the existing ammonia detection technologies, the mixed potential sensor exhibits promising potential owing to its high stability, good selectivity and small size. However, it remains challenging in application due to its insufficient limit of detection (LOD). To improve the performance of such sensor, a novel sensing material Ag 2 MoO 4 was synthesized in this work. The electrode morphology was tuned for optimum performance by adjusting the sintering temperature. The response to 5 ppm NH 3 at 425°C is about -29.86 mV with response/recover times of 105/96 s and sensitivity of -49.55 mV/decade. In addition, the sensor exhibits good selectivity and outstanding detection capability of trace-level NH 3 as low as 400 ppb. High concentrations of water vapor and CO 2 can greatly affect its performance, but it can be easily eliminated by a filter. The research of its sensing mechanism reveals that Ag 2 MoO 4 has both ionic conductance and electronic conductance, which transforms the electrochemical reaction site from two-dimensional three-phase boundaries (TPB) to a three-dimensional one distributed within the sensing material. Specifically, the sensor shows excellent NH 3 detection ability with the number of reaction sites increases.

Abstract:In this work, a room-temperature ammonia sensor based on hydrothermally synthesized tin dioxide/tungsten selenide (SnO2/WSe2) nanostructure was demonstrated. The SnO2 nanorod was decorated on the WSe2 hexagonal nanosheets. The characterization results confirmed that the SnO2/WSe2 composite had unique microstructure, chemical composition and morphology distribution. The experimental results show that the SnO2/WSe2 composite sensor had a response of 87.07% toward ammonia gas of 5 ppm, which was 2.58 times higher than that of pristine WSe2. Meantime, the response/recovery time for the SnO2/WSe2 composite sensor was 24 s/40 s. Besides, the low detection limit of the SnO2/WSe2 sensor could reach 0.1 ppm of ammonia gas. Additionally, the sensor exhibited excellent repeatability, outstanding long-term stability, and anti-humidity interference. The greatly improvement of the SnO2/WSe2 sensor was mainly due to the special structure of the p-n heterojunction between SnO2 nanorod and WSe2 hexagonal nanosheets.

Synthesis and in-situ noble metal modification of WO3·0.33H2O nanorods from a tungsten-containing mineral for enhancing NH3 sensing performance

Abstract:Ag- and Pt-doped WO3·0.33H2O nanorods with high response and selectivity to NH3 were synthesized from a tungsten-containing mineral of scheelite concentrate by a simple combined process, namely by a high pressure leaching method to obtain tungstate ions-containing leaching solution and followed by a hydrothermal method to prepare corresponding nanorods. The microstructure and NH3 sensing performance of the final products were investigated systematically. The microstructure characterization showed that the as-prepared WO3·0.33H2O nanorods had a hexagonal crystal structure, and Ag and Pt nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the WO3·0.33H2O nanorods. Gas sensing measurements indicated that Ag and Pt nanoparticles not only could obviously enhance NH3 sensing properties in terms of response, selectivity as well as response/recovery time, but also could reduce the optimal operating temperature at which the highest response was achieved. The highest responses of 22.4 and 47.6 for Ag- and Pt-doped WO3·0.33H2O nanorods to 1000 ppm NH3 were obtained at 225 and 175°C, respectively, which were about four and eight folds higher than that of pure one at 250°C. The superior NH3 sensing properties are mainly ascribed to the catalytic activities of noble metals and the different work functions between noble metals and WO3·0.33H2O.

Abstract:Hypertension affects from 20% to 30% of the world population.1,2 Blood pressure is the most consistent and powerful predictor of stroke. Population mortality trends for stroke parallel those in hypertension.3,4 A systolic blood pressure >115 mm Hg explains 60% of the population-attributable risk of stroke.5 In the Framingham cohort,6 the lifetime risk of stroke at ages 55, 65, and 75 years was similar, approximating 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 6 for men. In many countries, such as China,7 stroke is the third cause of death only preceded by heart disease and total cancer. Two thirds of stroke deaths occur in developing nations.8 According to recent estimates published by the World Health Organization, worldwide, &15 million people per year fall victim to a stroke, of whom &5 million die and another &5 million are left permanently disabled.1 From this vantage point, we reviewed the recent literature to underscore the deadly but reversible link between stroke and blood pressure. ### Nonmodifiable Risk Factors Nonwhite ethnicity, male sex, older age, and a positive family history are among the nonmodifiable risk factors of stroke.9,10 Monogenic stroke disorders,11 such as, for instance, cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy,12 are extremely rare. Abstract:The functional gas sensor device plays a pivotal role in intelligent medical treatment, among which metal oxide semiconductors are widely studied because of their inexpensiveness and ease of fabrication. However, the metal oxide sensors present a significant challenge in detecting NH3 at ppm levels within complex exhaled gases. Herein, the ZnO/PdO-x series were prepared by in situ loading palladium particles and calcining using nano-ZIF-8 as a precursor, which not only provided more transport path for ammonia adsorption but also achieved homogeneous nanoheterojunction accumulation structure. The tailor-made ZnO/PdO-2 sensor exhibits the optimum gas sensitivity, with a response value of 5.56 for 100 ppm of NH3 at 160 °C and a lower detection limit of 0.75 ppm. Particularly, it has a clear quantitative response to the actual exhaled gas of liver and kidney patients. By elucidating the intrinsic link between the in situ loading of MOF templates and the sensing mechanism, it is expected to broaden the rational design of metal-oxide sensors and thus provide an effective method for clinical detection.
Surface Enhancement Effects of Tiny SnO2 Nanoparticle Modification on Α-Fe2o3 for Room-Temperature NH3 Sensing.

Abstract:The development of a gas sensor capable of detecting ammonia with high selectivity and rapid response at room temperature has consistently posed a formidable challenge. To address this issue, the present study utilized a one-step solvothermal method to co-assemble α-Fe2O3 and SnO2 by evenly covering SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface of α-Fe2O3. By controlling the morphology and Fe/Sn mole ratio of the composite, the as-prepared sample exhibits high-performance detection of NH3. At room temperature conditions, a gas sensor composed of α-Fe2O3@3%SnO2 demonstrates a rapid response time of 14 s and a notable sensitivity of 83.9% when detecting 100 ppm ammonia. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the adsorption capacity of α-Fe2O3 to ammonia is enhanced by the surface effect provided by SnO2. Meanwhile, the existence of SnO2 tailors the pore structure and effective surface area of α-Fe2O3, creating multiple channels for the diffusion and adsorption of ammonia molecules. Additionally, an N-N heterostructure is formed between α-Fe2O3 and SnO2, which enhances the potential energy barrier and improves the ammonia sensing performance. Demonstration experiments have proved that the sensor shows significant advantages over commercial sensors in the process of ammonia detection in agricultural facilities. This work provides new insights into the perspectives on ammonia detection at room temperature.

Herein, we synthesize hierarchical WO3 spheres assembled by sheet-like structures via a facile sono-chemical strategy followed by the calcination process. The acidic environment and hydroxyl radicals released by hydrogen peroxide play crucial roles for the final formation of hierarchical WO3 flower-like spheres. The obtained hierarchical WO3 spheres are assembled by loosely connected sheet-like structures, which is convenient for the diffusion of gas molecules and the maximum utilization of sensing materials. The optimal WO3 sensor is endowed with an excellent response of 11.6 and an ultrafast response time of 3 s to 10 ppm triethylamine (TEA) at 205 degrees C. Furthermore, the WO3 sensor displays superior reusability, reliability in normal humidity conditions, and low theoretical limit of detection of 83 ppb. The excellent sensing properties are largely attributed to the unique nanostructures of hierarchical WO3 flower-like spheres, which promote the active surface reactions and facilitate TEA molecules diffusion into the sensing layers. Therefore, we provide a facile synthesis method for hierarchical WO3 flower-like spheres and their gas sensing applications.
Design of P–p Heterojunctions Based on CuO Decorated WS2 Nanosheets for Sensitive NH3 Gas Sensing at Room Temperature

Abstract:Tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets (NSs) have become a promising room-temperature gas sensor candidate due to their inherent high surface-to-volume ratio, tunable electrical properties, and high on-state current density. For further practical applications of WS2-based gas sensors, it is still necessary to overcome the insensitive response and incomplete recovery at room temperature. In this work, we controllably synthesized high-performance ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on CuO decorated WS2 NSs. The optimized p-p WS2/CuO heterojunctions improve the surface catalytic effect, thereby enhancing the gas-sensing performance. The pure WS2 NSs-based gas sensors showed a low response and an incomplete recovery in the case of NH3 sensing. After the functionalization of CuO nanoparticles, the WS2/CuO heterostructure-based gas sensor exhibits an improved response value of 40.5% to 5 ppm NH3 and full recoverability without any external assistance. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the adsorption of CuO for NH3 is much superior to WS2. The p-p heterojunctions strategy demonstrated in this work has great potential in the design of sensitive materials for gas sensors, and provides useful guidance for enhancing the room-temperature sensitivity and recoverability.

Abstract:An ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on ZnO/CuO (ZC) heterojunction was prepared by hydrothermal method and the sensing mechanism was studied by first principle calculations based on density function theory (DFT). Experiments show that NH3 sensor based on ZC heterojunction has low detection limit (0.39 ppm), fast response/recovery time (2.3 s/2.1 s), high sensitivity, good selectivity, strong stability and high humidity resistance at room temperature (RT). Compared with ZnO, ZC has more oxygen free radicals appeared on surface of heterojunction, and has redox reactions with NH3 molecules to release more electrons to improve sensitivity of ZC. Calculations show that excellent performance is mainly due to the strong adsorption energy of ZC heterojunction to NH3 detection. The polarity of NH3 molecules is enhanced under strong built-in electric field formed by ZC heterojunction which absorbs more NH3 molecules to react with oxygen radicals on surface of ZC and induce high response of ZC to NH3 molecules. This study indicates that ZC heterojunction structure can effectively improve ZnO sensors for NH3 detection at RT, which is helpful for application of metal oxide semiconductor.

Abstract:This work reported a high-performance room temperature ammonia (NH3) gas sensor, which was prepared by metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived zinc oxide (ZnO)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite. The sensor was prepared by depositing MOFs-derived ZnO/rGO film on an epoxy substrate with interdigital electrodes (IDEs). The microstructure and elementary composition of ZnO/rGO nanocomposite were measured and analyzed by using XRD, SEM, XPS and TEM measurements. The sensing performance of the prepared sensor was measured over a range of 0.5–30 ppm of ammonia gas. According to test results, the MOFs-derived ZnO/rGO sensor has a better sensing performance toward ammonia gas detection than that of ZIF8-ZnO and rGO sensors. The sensor exhibits high response (6.46@30 ppm), quick response/recovery time (50 s/25 s), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), excellent stability and well selectivity when the sensor was exposed to ammonia. The response–concentration curve shows good linear relationship (Y = 0.910 + 0.186X) within a certain range (0.5–30 ppm). Finally, the excellent performance of the sensor is explained by analyzing surface structure of MOFs ZnO/rGO and ammonia gas adsorption model.

Abstract:NiWO4 microflowers with a large surface area up to 79.77 m2·g-1 are synthesized in situ via a facile coprecipitation method. The NiWO4 microflowers are further decorated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and assembled to form composites for NH3 detection. The as-fabricated composite exhibits an excellent NH3 sensing response/recovery time (53 s/177 s) at a temperature of 460 °C, which is a 10-fold enhancement compared to that of pristine NiWO4. It also demonstrates a low detection limit of 50 ppm; the improved sensing performance is attributed to the porous structure of the material, the large specific surface area, and the p-n heterojunction formed between the MWNTs and NiWO4. The gas sensitivity of the sensor based on daisy-like NiWO4/MWCNTs shows that the sensor based on 10 mol % (MWN10) has the best gas sensitivity, with a sensitivity of 13.07 to 50 ppm NH3 at room temperature and a detection lower limit of 20 ppm. NH3, CO2, NO2, SO2, CO, and CH4 are used as typical target gases to construct the NiWO4/MWCNTs gas-sensitive material and study the research method combining density functional theory calculations and experiments. By calculating the morphology and structure of the gas-sensitive material NiWO4(110), the MWCNT load samples, the vacancy defects, and the influence law and internal mechanism of gas sensitivity were described.
