Abstract:The deposition of particles on a substrate by drying a colloidal suspension droplet is at the core of applications ranging from traditional printing on paper to printable electronics or photovoltaic devices. The self-pinning induced by the accumulation of particles at the contact line plays an important role in the formation of the deposition. In this paper, we investigate both numerically and theoretically, the effect of friction between the particles and the substrate on the deposition pattern. Without friction, the contact line shows a stick-slip behaviour and a dot-like deposit is left after the droplet is evaporated. By increasing the friction force, we observe a transition from a dot-like to a ring-like deposit. We propose a theoretical model to predict the effective radius of the particle deposition as a function of the friction force. Our theoretical model predicts a critical friction force when the self-pinning happens and the effective radius of deposit increases with increasing friction force, confirmed by our simulation results. Our results can find implications for developing active control strategies for the deposition of drying droplets.

Abstract:We propose a theory for the multi-ring pattern of the deposits that are formed when droplets of suspension are dried on a substrate. Assuming a standard model for the stick-slip motion of the contact line, we show that as droplets evaporate, many concentric rings of deposits are formed, but are taken over by a solid-circle pattern in the final stage of drying. An analytical expression is given to indicate when ring-pattern changes to solid-circle pattern during an evaporation process. The results are in qualitative agreement with existing experiments, and the other predictions on how the evaporation rate, droplet radius and receding contact angle affect the pattern are all subject to experimental test.

Abstract:The shape of deposits obtained from drying drops containing colloidal particles matters for technologies such as inkjet printing, microelectronics and bioassay manufacturing. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter drops containing colloidal particles is investigated experimentally with microscopy and profilometry, and theoretically with an inhouse finite-element code. The system studied involves aqueous drops containing titania nanoparticles evaporating on a glass substrate. Deposit shapes from spotted drops at different pH values are measured using a laser profilometer. Our results show that the pH of the solution influences the dried deposit pattern, which can be ring-like or more uniform. The transition between these patterns is explained by considering how DLVO interactions such as the electrostatic and van der Waals forces modify the particle deposition process. Also a phase diagram is proposed to describe how the shape of a colloidal deposit results from the competition between three flow patterns: a radial flow driven by evaporation at the wetting line, a Marangoni recirculating flow driven by surface tension gradients, and the transport of particles towards the substrate driven by DLVO interactions. This phase diagram explains three types of deposits commonly observed experimentally, such as a peripheral ring, a small central bump, or a uniform layer. Simulations and experiments are found in very good agreement.

Abstract:When a droplet containing a non-volatile component is dried on a substrate, it leaves a ringlike deposit on the substrate. We propose a theory which predicts the deposit distribution based on a model of fluid flow and contact line motion of the droplet. It is shown that the deposition pattern changes continuously from coffee-ring to volcano-like and to mountain-like depending on the mobility of the contact line and the evaporation rate. Analytical expression is given for the peak position of the distribution of deposit left on the substrate.
Pattern formation during the evaporation of a colloidal nanoliter drop: a numerical and experimental study

Abstract:An efficient way to precisely pattern particles on solid surfaces is to dispense and evaporate colloidal drops, as for bioassays. The dried deposits often exhibit complex structures exemplified by the coffee ring pattern, where most particles have accumulated at the periphery of the deposit. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter colloidal drops on a flat substrate is investigated numerically and experimentally. A finite-element numerical model is developed that solves the Navier-Stokes, heat and mass transport equations in a Lagrangian framework. The diffusion of vapor in the atmosphere is solved numerically, providing an exact boundary condition for the evaporative flux at the droplet-air interface. Laplace stresses and thermal Marangoni stresses are accounted for. The particle concentration is tracked by solving a continuum advection-diffusion equation. Wetting line motion and the interaction of the free surface of the drop with the growing deposit are modeled based on criteria on wetting angles. Numerical results for evaporation times and flow field are in very good agreement with published experimental and theoretical results. We also performed transient visualization experiments of water and isopropanol drops loaded with polystyrene microsphere evaporating on respectively glass and polydimethylsiloxane substrates. Measured evaporation times, deposit shape and sizes, and flow fields are in very good agreement with the numerical results. Different flow patterns caused by the competition of Marangoni loops and radial flow are shown to determine the deposit shape to be either a ring-like pattern or a homogeneous bump.

Abstract:We study the size and shape of the final deposit obtained when a drop with colloidal particles has dried on a super-hydrophobic surface made of micro-posts. As expected, most of the particles lie inside a circular area, which radius roughly corresponds to the Laplace pressure threshold for liquid impalement inside the structure (Cassie-Wenzel transition), inducing a coffee-stain deposit due to contact-line pinning. Less expected is the observation of tiny deposits on top of posts in the area external to the main ring, despite the low macroscopic liquid/solid friction. Experiments are carried out varying the concentration in particles and initial volume of drops, in order to determine the influence of these parameters on the size distribution of deposits. A microscopic insight of the tiny deposits is proposed, based on recent experiments of non-volatile liquid sliding drops.

Abstract:When a film of a liquid suspension of nanoparticles or a polymer solution is deposited on a surface, it may dewet from the surface and as the solvent evaporates the solute particles/polymer can be deposited on the surface in regular line patterns. In this paper we explore a hydrodynamic model for the process that is based on a long-wave approximation that predicts the deposition of irregular and regular line patterns. This is due to a self-organised pinning-depinning cycle that resembles a stick-slip motion of the contact line. We present a detailed analysis of how the line pattern properties depend on quantities such as the evaporation rate, the solute concentration, the Péclet number, the chemical potential of the ambient vapour, the disjoining pressure, and the intrinsic viscosity. The results are related to several experiments and to depinning transitions in other soft matter systems.

Abstract:Strategies to suppress the coffee-ring effect are critical in various applications, such as printing, surface manufacturing, and biochemical analysis. We propose a simple and contactless method based on forced airflow to obtain uniform depositions of drying colloidal droplets in this work. This method eliminates the coffee-ring effect without chemical/physical modifications of the suspensions and substrates. The tangential liquid flow in the drying droplets caused by forced airflow prevents nanoparticles from accumulating on the periphery and diminishes the three-phase contact line's pinning. The contact line retracts continuously and smoothly, resulting in a relatively uniform stain pattern. This paper experimentally explores several critical parameters in this strategy, including the droplet volume, the distance between droplets and the air inlet pipe, and forced airflow velocity. Our comprehensive study of the forced-air strategy offers potential for further diverse applications in both industrial and scientific fields.

Abstract:Spilling tea or coffee leads to a tell-tale circular stain after the droplet dries, known as the "coffee ring effect". The evaporation of suspension droplets is a complex physical process, and predicting and controlling the particle deposit patterns from sessile droplet evaporation are essential for many industrial processes, such as ink-jet printing and crop-care applications. In this article, we systematically investigate the effect of surface wettability on the evaporation dynamics of a particle-laden droplet, focussing on the contact line stick-slip behaviour, the hydrodynamic flow of the suspended particles, and the resulting particle deposit after evaporation. We use substrates with different wettabilities, ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and quantify the internal flow during the evaporation by tracking (fluorescent) tracer particles. We find that the internal flow shifts from a predominantly outward flow towards the contact line for low contact angles to an inward flow for large contact angles. Correspondingly, the particle deposit transitions from the typical coffee-ring pattern to a central stain as the substrates's hydrophobicity increases. Finally, we corroborate these experimental findings with dynamic density functional theory, modelling the droplet evaporation process and stick-slip behaviour of the contact line. Our investigation suggests that the wettability of the substrate can significantly alter hydrodynamic flow within drying droplets, thereby affecting the resulting particle deposit.

Abstract:When a colloidal sessile droplet dries on a substrate, the particles suspended in it usually deposit in a ringlike pattern. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the "coffee-ring" effect. One paradigm for why this occurs is as a consequence of the solutes being transported towards the pinned contact line by the flow inside the drop, which is induced by surface evaporation. From this perspective, the role of the liquid-gas interface in shaping the deposition pattern is somewhat minimized. Here, we propose an alternative mechanism for the coffee-ring deposition. It is based on the bulk flow within the drop transporting particles to the interface where they are captured by the receding free surface and subsequently transported along the interface until they are deposited near the contact line. That the interface captures the solutes as the evaporation proceeds is supported by a Lagrangian tracing of particles advected by the flow field within the droplet. We model the interfacial adsorption and transport of particles as a one-dimensional advection-generation process in toroidal coordinates and show that the theory reproduces ring-shaped depositions. Using this model, deposition patterns on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces are examined in which the evaporation is modeled as being either diffusive or uniform over the surface.

Abstract:The ring-like deposit along the perimeter of drying droplets is commonly observed, and its formation process is crucial to the applications attempting to promote or attenuate this phenomenon. In this paper, the growth of colloidal rings formed at the edge of drying droplets has been measured by utilizing fluorescent colloidal particles. The experimental observations indicate a nearly linear growth in the ring mass with time, which is quite different from the power-law growth predicted by Deegan et al. The observed linear growth of the colloidal ring is then explained by a model considering the thermal Marangoni effect in the drying droplets. The analysis shows that, when the Marangoni effect is remarkable, both the capillary outward flow and the convective Marangoni flow appear inside the drying droplet. In such case, not all the particles dispersed in the droplet, but only the particles in the outward flow region can be brought to the contact line to form the colloidal ring, and as a result, the ring will grow linearly with time. The present work may provide a better understanding for the formation of the colloidal ring in the presence of Marangoni effect. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Pinning Effects of Wettability Contrast on Pendant Drops on Chemically Patterned Surfaces

Abstract:The morphology and dynamics of the pendant drops attached to chemically patterned surfaces (pattern-pinned pendant drops) with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrasts were investigated experimentally and numerically. During the experiments, the evolution of the contact angle and the maximum drop volume were found to be different from those of traditional pendant drops, whose contact line is pinned on the edge of the tips (tip-pinned pendant drops), and the deviation is related to both the pattern radius and the wettability contrast. Then, a hypothesis was proposed to illustrate the behavior of the contact line after it reached the pattern boundary, based on the premise that the pattern boundary possessed a certain width or fuzziness. It was concluded that the special phenomena in this case were due to the movement of the contact line, and the maximum contact radius was presented as a key parameter for the pattern-pinned drops, which is directly related to the stability and the maximum volume of the drops. Furthermore, through a simulation study on pattern pinned pendant drops, the vibration performance of the meniscus was revealed as a superposition of two vibration behaviors including a low-frequency vibration due to the inertia effects and a high-frequency vibration due to the surface tension gradient within the boundary region. In addition, the hypothesis proposed above was also verified. Finally, a forecasting model to predict the maximum contact radius for the pattern-pinned pendant drops was built for different liquids and pattern wettabilities. This allows us to effectively design and optimize chemically patterned surfaces to achieve a desired pinning function or a pendant drop with desired properties.
Dynamics of Droplets Moving on Lubricated Polymer Brushes

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of drops on polymer-coated surfaces is crucial for optimizing applications such as self-cleaning materials or microfluidic devices. While the static and dynamic properties of deposited drops have been well characterised, a microscopic understanding of the underlying dynamics is missing. In particular, it is unclear how drop dynamics depends on the amount of uncrosslinked chains in the brush, because experimental techniques fail to quantify those. Here we use coarse-grained simulations to study droplets moving on a lubricated polymer brush substrate under the influence of an external body force. The simulation model is based on the many body dissipative particle dynamics (mDPD) method and designed to mimic a system of water droplets on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes with chemically identical PDMS lubricant. In agreement with experiments, we find a sublinear power law dependence between the external force $F$ and the droplet velocity $v$, $F \propto v^\alpha$ with $\alpha <1$; however, the exponents differ ($\alpha \sim 0.6-0.7$ in simulations versus $\alpha \sim 0.25$ in experiments). With increasing velocity, the droplets elongate and the receding contact angle decreases, whereas the advancing contact angle remains roughly constant. Analyzing the flow profiles inside the droplet reveals that the droplets do not slide, but roll, with vanishing slip at the substrate surface. Surprisingly, adding lubricant has very little effect on the effective friction force between the droplet and the substrate, even though it has a pronounced effect on the size and structure of the wetting ridge, especially above the cloaking transition.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of nanoparticle deposition from drying of colloidal droplets. By means of lattice Boltzmann modeling and theoretical analysis, various deposition patterns, including mountain-like, uniform and coffee ring, as well as un-/symmetrical multiring/mountain-like patterns are achieved. The ratio of nanoparticles deposited at droplet peripheries and center is proposed to quantify different patterns. Its value is controlled by the competition between the capillary flow and nanoparticle diffusion, leading to a linear dependence on an effective Péclet number, across over three orders of magnitude. Remarkably, the final deposition pattern can be predicted based on material properties only.

Analysis of Profile and Morphology of Colloidal Deposits obtained from Evaporating Sessile Droplets

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the profile and morphology of the ring-like deposits obtained after evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing polystyrene colloidal particles on a hydrophilic glass substrate. In particular, the coupled effect of particle size and concentration are studied. The deposits were qualitatively visualized under an optical microscope and profile of the ring was measured by an optical profilometer. The profile of the ring resembles a partial torus-like shape for all cases of particles size and concentration. The cracks on the surface of the ring were found to occur only at smaller particle size and larger concentration. We plot a regime map to classify three deposit types - discontinuous monolayer ring, continuous monolayer ring, and multiple layers ring - on particles concentration - particle size plane. Our data shows a possible existence of a critical concentration (particle size) for a given particle size (concentration) at which the monolayer ring forms. For the larger particle sizes, the immersion capillary forces between the particles dominate, aiding the formation of a monolayer ring of the particles. The relative mass of the particles accumulated in the ring is lesser in cases of the monolayer ring. We measure the width and height of the ring and show that they scale with particle concentration by a power law for the multiple layers ring. This scaling corroborates with an existing continuum based theoretical model. We briefly discuss the effect of the interaction of growing deposit with shrinking free surface on the ring dimensions and profile. The present results aid understanding of the ring formation process and will be useful in guiding the design of self-assemblies of the colloidal particles formed by the evaporating droplets.

Abstract:A two-dimension theoretical model has been developed to explain the mechanism of the film for- mation in drying silver nanoparticle dispersion drops on solid substrates. The film formation process for a stable drop was first analyzed and simulated by using this model. And then the surface topographies of the films formed in ejected drops at low drying temperature and drops at high drying temperature were simula- ted especially. All the simulaton results were in agreements with our experimental profiles. Our analyses and simulation results revealed that the coffee-ring defect may be eliminated by reducing the evaporation rate of the solvent. The model would be useful for understanding and forecasting the surface topography of the film formed by inkjet printing technology.
Friction of Droplets Sliding on Microstructured Superhydrophobic Surfaces.

Abstract:Liquid transport is a fundamental process relevant to a wide range of applications, for example, heat transfer, anti-icing, self-cleaning, drag reduction, and microfluidic systems. For these applications, a deeper understanding of the sliding behavior of water droplets on solid surfaces is of particular importance. In this study, the frictional behavior of water droplets sliding on superhydrophobic surfaces decorated with micropillar arrays was studied using a nanotribometer. Our experiments show that surfaces with a higher solid area fraction generally exhibited larger friction, although friction might drop when the solid area fraction was close to unity. More interestingly, we found that the sliding friction of droplets was enhanced when the dimension of the microstructures increased, showing a distinct size effect. The nonmonotonic dependence of friction force on solid area fraction and the apparent size effect can be qualitatively explained by the evolution of two governing factors, that is, the true length of the contact line and the coordination degree of the depinning events. The mechanisms are expected to be generally applicable for other liquid transport processes involving the dynamic motion of a three-phase contact line, which may provide a new means of tuning liquid-transfer behavior through surface microstructures.
Morphological Control of Linear Particle Deposits from the Drying of Inkjet-Printed Rivulets

Abstract:We studied the morphology of linear particle deposits obtained by inkjet-printing of silica nanoparticle suspension in drying condition where contact line depinning occurs. We show that this evaporation mode can be obtained by adjusting the particle concentration in different solvents. For isolated drops, deposited manually or by inkjet printing, drying induces the formation of two concentric rings in which particles self-assemble into a monolayer. For fused drops, our main result is that stable rivulets could be formed by drop overlap leading, after drying, to the formation of three parallel lines composed of a self-assembled particle monolayer. The three lines are of homogeneous thickness with two very thin outer lines (~ 1 $\mu$m width) and a wider central line (~ 20 $\mu$m width). We reveal how the width of the resulting lines is influenced by drop spacing in a predictable manner for a large experimental window knowing the drop size.

Abstract:The deposit pattern of drying liquid droplets has a close relationship with the radial-velocity profile along the droplet surface. In this paper, the surface temperature of the droplet is first solved numerically and approximated by a simple analytical form, and an analytical expression for the radial-velocity of the surface flow is then obtained by using the lubrication analysis developed by Hu and Larson. The theoretical analysis indicates that the outward surface flow will be reduced by the thermal Marangoni stress along the surface. When the Marangoni number is below a critical value, Ma(Crit), all the surface liquid will move outward and a dense, ring-like deposit will be formed. When above Ma(Crit), a stagnation point, within which the surface flow is inward and beyond which the surface flow is outward, will appear on the droplet surface. In such case, the particles transported to the surface beyond the stagnation point will move to the droplet edge to form the ring deposit, and the others will deposit on the central region of the droplet. Numerical results indicate that the critical Marangoni number decreases in a power law with the contact angle. The theory for the radial-velocity of the surface flow will be helpful to predict and control the deposit patterns from the drying droplets.

Abstract:Inkjet printing is a cost‐effective method of particle deposition applicable, for example, in the manufacture of Quantum Dot (QD) color filters. However, it is a challenge to achieve uniform deposition of particles because evaporating colloidal dispersions are prone to the coffee‐ring effect. When the particle size is small, it is difficult to gauge directly by experiment how particles migrate during the evaporation process. Consequently, it is a challenge to optimize the process conditions to improve uniformity by experiment alone. To aid in this task, we have developed a simulator for colloidal droplet evaporation. Rather than use an effective particle concentration field as in previous works, motion of each individual particle is calculated by Stokesian Dynamics, with particle interactions governed by the DLVO theory. In order to facilitate the simulation of large collections of particles, GPU computing is applied to reduce the simulation time. A phase‐field approach is taken to capture the interface physics at the solvent‐air interface. Within a colloidal droplet we find that, by controlling the temperature, it is possible to promote Marangoni flow and, in turn, improve deposition uniformity. In future, we aim to use simulation to further optimize the process conditions, such as the chamber pressure and temperature, in order maximize uniformity.
