Abstract:Revenue cycle management is a tool that is frequently being used in health care practices to improve the profitability of practices and hospitals. Previously, efforts to optimize profitability have focused on cost containment, and emphasis on revenue generation has been lacking. An understanding of the phases of the revenue cycle and the ways to influence each of them allows hand surgeons to make substantial and tangible changes to the revenue growth of their practice. An emphasis on personnel training, process improvement, and adoption of technologies can drastically change the revenue cycle of a hand surgery practice.

Abstract:Simply working hard is not enough to maintain a profitable clinical practice. Prompt and complete payment for services is just as critical. Revenue cycle management (RCM) tracks the payment process from patient scheduling through treatment, coding, billing, and reimbursement. Even though reimbursement rates for service codes are preset, and the service is documented, this apparently straightforward process is complicated by insurance payors, negotiated contracts, coding requirements, compliance regulators, and an ever-changing reimbursement environment. Not typically trained in RCM, physicians struggle with its demands of timeliness, accuracy, paperwork, and the constant scrutiny for underpayment or unfulfilled reimbursements. Consequently, they often relent to the pressures and simply accept the decreased reimbursements as "cost of doing business" or else relegate RCM to others on the team. In either case, they leave significant amounts of money on the table. Using published work in health care and other allied sectors, we present a systematic method to understand and improve RCM processes. It also creates a strong partnership between clinicians and their administrative counterparts. Optimizing RCM improves patient experience, reduces the time between submission of claims and payment, eliminates fraud at both the coding and patient levels, and increases cash flow, all of which create a financially stable clinical practice.

Abstract:As the largest single payer for health care in the United States, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) generates enormous amounts of data. Historically, CMS has faced technological challenges in storing, analyzing, and disseminating this information because of its volume and privacy concerns. However, rapid progress in the fields of data architecture, storage, and analysis--the big-data revolution--over the past several years has given CMS the capabilities to use data in new and innovative ways. We describe the different types of CMS data being used both internally and externally, and we highlight a selection of innovative ways in which big-data techniques are being used to generate actionable information from CMS data more effectively. These include the use of real-time analytics for program monitoring and detecting fraud and abuse and the increased provision of data to providers, researchers, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders.

Often these investments fail to deliver on their promise. They are sabotaged by corporate politics, insufficient planning, lack of budgets, training and onboarding. This paper provides the practitioner with a roadmap for building a customer-centric organisation that can succeed. Abstract:Cloud computing is too often seen as a tactical way to reduce costs, when its most important benefit is as a strategic way to grow revenues. Such revenue growthcan come about in a variety of ways, such as through faster innovation of new products, processes, and customer interactions; identifying more customers and closing more purchases; and improving customer relationships through more targeted offers and better service and experiences. Big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence-based digital technology lay a solid foundation for transforming and upgrading enterprise accounting. The demands for scientific, forward-thinking, and data-driven enterprise financial management are increasing in an era of deep Internet of Things integration and digitalization. It is no longer necessary to rely on traditional module administration, manual decision-making, and one-way operation, but rather to improve data analysis, data application, and financial value improvement. Financial sharing will become a critical component of corporate operation, providing solid financial backing for strategic enterprise choices, departmental operations, and organizational change. To achieve true financial transformation, enterprises must continue integrating financial resources, increasing technology research and development, and transforming and upgrading their systems. Abstract:Real-world data (RWD) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by offering valuable insights into patient outcomes and treatment efficacy. However, leveraging RWD effectively presents challenges, including its inherent limitations, diverse stakeholders, and insufficient data management pipelines. A proposed framework advocates three essential elements: adherence to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), stakeholder engagement and education, and highlighting the need for inclusive, pragmatic federated hybrid pipelines. By employing these strategies, healthcare organizations can overcome obstacles to RWD utilization and foster sustainable progress in patient care.

Abstract:Healthcare enterprises are starting to adopt cloud computing due to its numerous advantages over traditional infrastructures. This has become a necessity because of the increased volume, velocity and variety of healthcare data, and the need to facilitate data correlation and large-scale analysis. Cloud computing infrastructures have the power to offer continuous acquisition of data from multiple heterogeneous sources, efficient data integration, and big data analysis. At the same time, security, availability, and disaster recovery are critical factors aiding towards the adoption of cloud computing. However, the migration of healthcare workloads to cloud is not straightforward due to the vagueness in healthcare data standards, heterogeneity and sensitive nature of healthcare data, and many regulations that govern its usage. This paper highlights the need for providing healthcare data acquisition using cloud infrastructures and presents the challenges, requirements, use-cases, and best practices for building a state-of-the-art healthcare data ingestion service on cloud.

Abstract:<span>The accounting profession is undergoing a radical change that supplants many historical accounting duties by requiring technical skills to be added to the accountant's tool chest. Stakeholders are increasingly adopting disruptive technologies, including data analytics, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. We reviewed 185 accounting schools' websites, curricula, course descriptions, syllabi, and learning outcomes to determine if and how accounting departments incorporate data analytics into their curriculum. We also sent a survey to accounting professionals to seek their opinions regarding data analytics and STEM-designated accounting programs. Generally, data analytics was viewed as adding value, but STEM designated education did not.</span>

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the United States’ lack of a nationwide infrastructure for collecting, sharing, and using health data, especially for secondary uses (e.g., population health management and public health). The federal government is taking several important steps to upgrade the nation’s health data ecosystem—notably, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Data Modernization Initiative and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement. However, substantial barriers remain. Inconsistent regulations, infrastructure, and governance across federal and state levels and between states significantly impede the exchange and analysis of health data. Siloed systems and insufficient funding block effective integration of clinical, public health, and social determinants data within and between states. In this analytic essay, we propose strategies to develop a nationwide health data ecosystem. We focus on providing federal guidance and incentives to develop state-designated entities responsible for the collection, integration, and analysis of clinical, public health, social determinants of health, claims, administrative, and other relevant data. These recommendations include a regulatory clearinghouse, federal guidance, model legislation and templated regulation, funding to incentive enterprise architecture, regulatory sandboxes, and a 3-pronged research agenda. Archetype-based data warehouse environment to enable the reuse of electronic health record data

Abstract:Background: The reuse of data captured during health care delivery is essential to satisfy the demands of clinical research and clinical decision support systems. A main barrier for the reuse is the existence of legacy formats of data and the high granularity of it when stored in an electronic health record (EHR) system. Thus, we need mechanisms to standardize, aggregate, and query data concealed in the EHRs, to allow their reuse whenever they are needed. Objective: To create a data warehouse infrastructure using archetype-based technologies, standards and query languages to enable the interoperability needed for data reuse. Materials and methods: The work presented makes use of best of breed archetype-based data transformation and storage technologies to create a workflow for the modeling, extraction, transformation and load of EHR proprietary data into standardized data repositories. We converted legacy data and performed patient-centered aggregations via archetype-based transformations. Later, specific purpose aggregations were performed at a query level for particular use cases. Results: Laboratory test results of a population of 230,000 patients belonging to Troms and Finnmark counties in Norway requested between January 2013 and November 2014 have been standardized. Test records normalization has been performed by defining transformation and aggregation functions between the laboratory records and an archetype. These mappings were used to automatically generate open EHR compliant data. These data were loaded into an archetype-based data warehouse. Once loaded, we defined indicators linked to the data in the warehouse to monitor test activity of Salmonella and Pertussis using the archetype query language. Discussion: Archetype-based standards and technologies can be used to create a data warehouse environment that enables data from EHR systems to be reused in clinical research and decision support systems. With this approach, existing EHR data becomes available in a standardized and interoperable format, thus opening a world of possibilities toward semantic or concept-based reuse, query and communication of clinical data.

By identifying problems and taking the following corrective actions immediately, the AMC significantly reduced the number and average age of its unbilled accounts: Realigning system automation to improve routing efficiency. Facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration to better identify and correct the root causes of issues. Accountants are traditionally the reliable source for business information, but that position may be eroded by the emerging profession of data analysts. Looking to the future, Big Four accounting firms stress the need for data analysis skills, and universities are launching degree programs. But what is the reaction of current working professionals? Are they heeding the call for data analytics? Evidence indicates there is some resistance to adoption of data analytics practices. This research proposes the use of Status Quo Bias Theory to investigate the reactions of accounting professionals across the spectrum of accounting sub-disciplines. The study seeks to understand factors that may influence practicing accountants' resistance to adopting new data analysis technologies.

Abstract:The journey to value relies heavily on a strong foundation in population health and on supporting systems of care. However, as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and commercial insurers rethink reimbursements to achieve cost savings, both patients and payments to health care organizations are at risk. The case for value-based care is ever stronger yet health systems will have to mature their culture, population health infrastructure, technologies and analytics capabilities, and leadership and management systems. In this article, the authors describe the functional organizational structure of the clinical transformation team responsible for population health in the University Hospitals Accountable Care Organizations (ACO). Based on their experiences building and evolving population health for the University Hospitals ACO, the authors layout the 3 pillars supporting their structure, including operations, clinical design, and data and analytics, and key areas of focus for each pillar.

Abstract:Digital transformation has deeply influenced how innovation can rise in the production, distribution and consumption of cultural products. Although data-driven innovation has been proved effective in creating value across many business functions, the pace of adoption of strong data ecosystems seems slower for Arts and Cultural Organizations (ACOs). The paper theoretically explores how data analytics can affect different areas of innovation in the core cultural sectors. By integrating marketing intelligence, arts management and policy literature with illustrative evidence from secondary sources, we discuss the potential impact of data analytics for enhancing ACOs innovation. First, digitalization and connectivity have increased opportunities for customer engagement and empowerment, shifting cultural consumption from a transaction to a relationship with cultural organizations. Second, data-driven metrics allow ACOs and policy makers to match more effectively patterns of consumption and eventually to create value from harvesting and processing information. Finally, although ACOs are encouraged to review their traditional business models through this new trajectory, significant conceptual and organizational barriers question the benefits of data analytics and slow down its adoption. The paper contributes to the academic and policy debate on the role of data-driven innovation in arts management and marketing strategies for cultural organizations.
