Abstract:While there is extensive literature on approximation, deterministic as well as random, of general convex bodies $K$ in the symmetric difference metric, or other metrics arising from intrinsic volumes, very little is known for corresponding random results in the Hausdorff distance when the approximant $K_n$ is given by the convex hull of $n$ independent random points chosen uniformly on the boundary or in the interior of $K$. When $K$ is a polygon and the points are chosen on its boundary, we determine the exact limiting behavior of the expected Hausdorff distance between a polygon as $n\to\infty$. From this we derive the behavior of the asymptotic constant for a regular polygon in the number of vertices.

Abstract:Generalized polyhedral convex optimization problems in locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces are studied systematically in this paper. We establish solution existence theorems, necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, weak and strong duality theorems. In particular, we show that the dual problem has the same structure as the primal problem, and the strong duality relation holds under three different sets of conditions.

Abstract:In a previous work we proved that each $n$-dimensional convex polyhedron ${\mathcal K}subset{\mathbb R}^n$ and its relative interior are regular images of ${\mathbb R}^n$. As the image of a non-constant polynomial map is an unbounded semialgebraic set, it is not possible to substitute regular maps by polynomial maps in the previous statement. In this work we determine constructively all unbounded $n$-dimensional convex polyhedra ${\mathcal K}\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ that are polynomial images of ${\mathbb R}^n$. We also analyze for which of them the interior ${\rm Int}({\mathcal K})$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$. A discriminating object is the recession cone $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ of ${\mathcal K}$. Namely, \em ${\mathcal K}$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$ if and only if $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ has dimension $n$\em. In addition, \em ${\rm Int}({\mathcal K})$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$ if and only if $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ has dimension $n$ and ${\mathcal K}$ has no bounded faces of dimension $n-1$\em. A key result is an improvement of Pecker's elimination of inequalities to represent semialgebraic sets as projections of algebraic sets. Empirical approaches suggest us that there are `few' polynomial maps that have a concrete convex polyhedron as a polynomial image and that there are even fewer for which it is affordable to show that their images actually correspond to our given convex polyhedron. This search of a `needle in the haystack' justifies somehow the technicalities involved in our constructive proofs.

Abstract:Reconstructing a composition (union) of convex polytopes that perfectly fits the corresponding input point-cloud is a hard optimization problem with interesting applications in reverse engineering and rigid body dynamics simulations. We propose a pipeline that first extracts a set of planes, then partitions the input point-cloud into weakly convex clusters and finally generates a set of convex polytopes as the intersection of fitted planes for each partition. Finding the best-fitting convex polytopes is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem over the set of fitted planes and is solved using an Evolutionary Algorithm. For convex clustering, we employ two different methods and detail their strengths and weaknesses in a thorough evaluation based on multiple input data-sets.

On the Combinatorial Complexity of Approximating Polytopes

Abstract:Approximating convex bodies succinctly by convex polytopes is a fundamental problem in discrete geometry. A convex body $K$ of diameter $\mathrm{diam}(K)$ is given in Euclidean $d$-dimensional space, where $d$ is a constant. Given an error parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, the objective is to determine a polytope of minimum combinatorial complexity whose Hausdorff distance from $K$ is at most $\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{diam}(K)$. By combinatorial complexity we mean the total number of faces of all dimensions of the polytope. A well-known result by Dudley implies that $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ facets suffice, and a dual result by Bronshteyn and Ivanov similarly bounds the number of vertices, but neither result bounds the total combinatorial complexity. We show that there exists an approximating polytope whose total combinatorial complexity is $\tilde{O}(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$, where $\tilde{O}$ conceals a polylogarithmic factor in $1/\varepsilon$. This is a significant improvement upon the best known bound, which is roughly $O(1/\varepsilon^{d-2})$. Our result is based on a novel combination of both old and new ideas. First, we employ Macbeath regions, a classical structure from the theory of convexity. The construction of our approximating polytope employs a new stratified placement of these regions. Second, in order to analyze the combinatorial complexity of the approximating polytope, we present a tight analysis of a width-based variant of Bárány and Larman's economical cap covering. Finally, we use a deterministic adaptation of the witness-collector technique (developed recently by Devillers et al.) in the context of our stratified construction.

Interactive Hausdorff Distance Computation for General Polygonal Models.

Abstract:We present a simple algorithm to compute the Hausdorff distance between complicated, polygonal models at interactive rates. The algorithm requires no assumptions about the underlying topology and geometry. To avoid the high computational and implementation complexity of exact Hausdorff distance calculation, we approximate the Hausdorff distance within a user-specified error bound. The main ingredient of our approximation algorithm is a novel polygon subdivision scheme, called Voronoi subdivision, combined with culling between the models based on bounding volume hierarchy (BVH). This cross-culling method relies on tight yet simple computation of bounds on the Hausdorff distance, and it discards unnecessary polygon pairs from each of the input models alternatively based on the distance bounds. This algorithm can approximate the Hausdorff distance between polygonal models consisting of tens of thousands triangles with a small error bound in real-time, and outperforms the existing algorithm by more than an order of magnitude. We apply our Hausdorff distance algorithm to the measurement of shape similarity, and the computation of penetration depth for physically-based animation. In particular, the penetration depth computation using Hausdorff distance runs at highly interactive rates for complicated dynamics scene.
Optimal Bound on the Combinatorial Complexity of Approximating Polytopes

Abstract:This paper considers the question of how to succinctly approximate a multidimensional convex body by a polytope. Given a convex body $K$ of unit diameter in Euclidean $d$-dimensional space (where $d$ is a constant) and an error parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, the objective is to determine a convex polytope of low combinatorial complexity whose Hausdorff distance from $K$ is at most $\varepsilon$. By combinatorial complexity we mean the total number of faces of all dimensions. Classical constructions by Dudley and Bronshteyn/Ivanov show that $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ facets or vertices are possible, respectively, but neither achieves both bounds simultaneously. In this paper, we show that it is possible to construct a polytope with $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ combinatorial complexity, which is optimal in the worst case. Our result is based on a new relationship between $\varepsilon$-width caps of a convex body and its polar body. Using this relationship, we are able to obtain a volume-sensitive bound on the number of approximating caps that are "essentially different." We achieve our main result by combining this with a variant of the witness-collector method and a novel variable-thickness layered construction of the economical cap covering.

Numerical Approximation of Optimal Convex Shapes in $\mathbb{R}^3$

Abstract:In the optimization of convex domains under a PDE constraint numerical difficulties arise in the approximation of convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Previous research used a restriction to rotationally symmetric domains to reduce shape optimization problems to a two-dimensional setting. In the current research, two approaches for the approximation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are considered. First, a notion of discrete convexity allows for a nearly convex approximation with polyhedral domains. An alternative approach is based on the recent observation that higher order finite elements can approximate convex functions conformally. As a second approach these results are used to approximate optimal convex domains with isoparametric convex domains. The proposed algorithms were tested on shape optimization problems constrained by a Poisson equation and both algorithms achieved similar results.

Abstract:An equidistant polytope is a special equidistant set in the space $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose boundary points have equal distances from two finite systems of points. Since one of the finite systems of the given points is required to be in the interior of the convex hull of the other one we can speak about inner and outer focal points of the equidistant polytope. It is of type $(q, p)$, where $q$ is the number of the outer focal points and $p$ is the number of the inner focal points. The equidistancy is the generalization of convexity because a convex polytope can be given as an equidistant polytope of type $(q, 1)$, where $q\geq n+1$. In the paper we present some general results about the basic properties of the equidistant polytopes: convex components, graph representations, connectedness, correspondence to the Voronoi decomposition of the space etc. Especially, we are interested in equidistant polytopes of dimension $2$ (equidistant polygons). Equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$ will be characterized in terms of a constructive (ruler-and-compass) process to recognize them. In general they are pentagons with exactly two concave angles such that the vertices, where the concave angles appear at, are joined by an inner diagonal related to the adjacent sides of the polygon in a special way via the three reflection theorem for concurrent lines. The last section is devoted to some special arrangements of the focal points to get the concave quadrangles as equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$.

Abstract:We prove that any convex geometry $\mathcal{A}=(U,\mathcal{C})$ on $n$ points and any ideal $\mathcal{I}=(U',\mathcal{C}')$ of $\mathcal{A}$ can be realized as the intersection pattern of an open convex polyhedral cone $K\subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^n$. Furthermore, we show that $K$ can be chosen to have at most $m$ facets, where $m$ is the number of critical rooted circuits of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show that any convex geometry of convex dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and that any multisimplicial complex (a basic example of an ideal of a convex geometry) of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$ and that this is best possible. From our results it also follows that distributive lattices of dimension $d$ are realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{d}$ and that median systems are realizable. We leave open %the question whether each median system of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{O(d)}$.

Abstract:This is a study on approximating a Riemannian manifold by polyhedra. Our scope is understanding Tullio Regge's [52] article in the restricted Riemannian frame. We give a proof of the Regge theorem along lines close to its original intuition: one can approximate a compact domain of a Riemannian manifold by polyhedra in such a way that the integral of the scalar curvature is approximated by a corresponding polyhedral curvature.

We introduce an affine hyperplane arrangement and show that the polynomials describing the boundary of can be extended to polynomials in variables within each region of the arrangement. In dimension 2, we give a full characterization of those polygons such that their intersection body is convex. We give a partial characterization for general dimensions.

Abstract:The convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-face-colorable convex polytopes are computed. It is found that every such convex hull is a $d$-polytope with $d+2$ or $d+3$ vertices. Utilizing Gale transform and Gale diagram, we calculate its combinatorial structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient criterion for combinatorial equivalence of two such convex hulls is given.

Abstract:A convex geometry is a closure system satisfying the anti-exchange property. This paper, following the work of Adaricheva and Bolat (2019) and the Polymath REU (2020), continues to investigate representations of convex geometries with small convex dimension by convex shapes on the plane and in spaces of higher dimension. In particular, we answer in the negative the question raised by Polymath REU (2020): whether every convex geometry of $cdim=3$ is representable by the circles on the plane. We show there are geometries of $cdim=3$ that cannot be represented by spheres in any $\mathbb{R}^k$, and this connects to posets not representable by spheres from the paper of Felsner, Fishburn and Trotter (1999). On the positive side, we use the result of Kincses (2015) to show that every finite poset is an ellipsoid order.

Abstract:Rank-one convexity is a weak form of convexity related to convex integration and the elusive notion of quasiconvexity, but more amenable both in theory and practice. However, exact algorithms for computing the rank one convex hull of a finite set are only known for some special cases of separate convexity with a finite number of directions. Both inner approximations either with laminates or T 4 's and outer approximations through polyconvexity are known to be insufficient in general. We study R 2 ⊕ R -separately convex hulls of finite sets, which is a special case of rank-one convexity with infinitely many directions in which T 4 's are known not to capture the rank one convex hull. When R 3 is identified with a subset of 2 × 3 matrices, it is known to correspond also to quasiconvexity. We propose new inner and outer approximations built upon systematic use of known results, and prove that they agree. The inner approximation allows to understand better the structure of the rank one convex hull. The outer approximation gives rise to a computational algorithm which, in some cases, computes the hull exactly, and in general builds a sequence that converges to the hull. We use and systematize all previous attempts at computing D -convex hulls, and bring new ideas that may help compute general D -convex hulls.

Abstract:We prove an analogue of Kostant's convexity theorem for thick affine buildings and give an application for groups with affine BN-pairs. Recall that there are two natural retractions of the affine building onto a fixed apartment A: The retraction r centered at an alcove in A and the retraction ρ centered at a chamber in the spherical building at infinity. We prove that for each special vertex x ∈ A the set ρ(r –1(W .x)) is a certain convex hull of W .x. The proof can be reduced to a statement about Coxeter complexes and heavily relies on a character formula for highest weight representations of algebraic groups.

Based on the characterization of the polyconvex envelope of an isotropic function by its signed singular value representation, we propose a simple algorithm for the numerical approximation of the polyconvex envelope. Instead of operating on the lifted space of [math] matrices, the algorithm requires only the computation of the convex envelope of a function on a [math]-dimensional manifold, which is easily realized by standard algorithms. The significant speedup associated with the dimensional reduction from [math] to [math] is demonstrated in a series of numerical experiments.

Our investigation includes the verification of Hadwiger's covering conjecture for , as well as the estimation of the covering functional for convex polytopes in .
