Abstract:The optical anti‐counterfeiting science and technology are currently restricted by the limited information loading capacity, and thus development of multi‐level and high‐security systems is urgently needed but still challenging. Herein, anti‐counterfeiting design strategies (including ASCII/5D codes and dynamic information storage) are reported by incorporation of abundant multi‐central luminescence and time‐resolved, excitation‐dependent ultralong phosphorescence. Self‐assembly of new single‐component 0D organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) are facilely achieved, which exhibit divisible ultralong all‐phosphorescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, and single‐molecule white‐light emission, as proved by experiments and theoretical calculations. Interestingly, combing advantages of both inorganic cluster and π‐conjugation in OIMHs, the time‐dependent afterglow affords color‐variable emission in a wide wavelength range larger than 100 nm, providing extra color‐time dimensions for information encryption compared to traditional single‐color fluorescent anti‐counterfeiting. Moreover, white light‐emitting diode device is further developed to show high lighting ability for the single‐component OIMH. Therefore, this study paves an effective way to fabricate cluster‐based single‐component hybrids by equipping different emitters to confer diverse photoluminescence manners and satisfy down‐to‐earth application requirements. This study provides a new strategy to the design of high‐performance molecular afterglow by merging clusteroluminogens and tunable π‐conjugated structures into the single‐component 0D organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs). The OIMHs serve as advanced single‐molecule white‐light emission and information security materials for high‐efficiency white‐light‐emitting diode dynamic information storage and high‐level anti‐counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Full-color-tunable ultralong afterglow is significant for high-level information encryption. Herein, we report such an afterglow from a polymer synthesized via one-step anionic hybrid copolymerization of maleimide and N,N-dimethylaminopropylacrylamide. The polymer film exhibits an optimal delayed emission wavelength varying from 428 to 629 nm with a duration of afterglow of up to 4 s under ambient conditions. Particularly, the afterglow is pH-responsive. Our study reveals that the unique afterglow originates from the concurrence of three distinct delayed emission modes, i.e., persistent room-temperature phosphorescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, and delayed fluorescence through Forster-resonance energy transfer. This present study provides a facile approach to developing high-performance afterglow materials for information encryption and decryption.

Abstract:(ETPP)2ZrCl6 possesses a misaligned stacking and rigid structure due to the intervention of [ZrCl6]2−, thus contributing to an improved phosphorescence quantum yield (ΦP = 27.50 %) and an extended phosphorescence lifetime (τ = 0.6234 s). Beyond that, the dual‐mode emissions are intelligently controlled by doping the active Te4+ with 5s2 lone‐pair electron, resulting in the dynamic switching between RTP phosphorescence and STE fluorescence. Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) with time‐resolved luminescence behavior promise to be a breakthrough in multi‐level anti‐counterfeiting, but controlling the dynamic switching between phosphorescence and fluorescence is extremely challenging. Herein, an array of 0D HMHs is constructed by screening the π‐conjugated ligand with room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Compared to the organic chromophore, (ETPP)2ZrCl6 possesses a misaligned stacking and rigid structure, contributing to an improved phosphorescence quantum yield (ΦP = 27.50%) and an extended phosphorescence lifetime (τ = 0.6234 s), as the intervening of inorganic unit [ZrCl6]2− suppresses the energy losses caused by nonradiative relaxation and prompts the intersystem crossover (ISC) process. Not only that, the interplay of phosphorescence‐fluorescence dual‐mode emission can be intelligently controlled by doping the active metal Te4+, resulting in a dynamic switching between RTP phosphorescence and self‐trapped exciton (STE) fluorescence. DFT calculations reveal the governing origins of RTP‐STE from the intermolecular ISC channels and spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) coefficients. These precise images into periodic pixelated arrays enable the multi‐level anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption. This work proposes a fluorescence‐phosphorescence co‐modulating strategy under the premise of dissecting the structural origins for optimizing RTP phosphorescence, which paves the way for designing high‐security‐level anti‐counterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have shown widespread applications in optoelectronic devices, biological imaging, molecular switches, safety systems, etc. Here, we report the design and synthesis of a series of metal-organic halide materials with regulated phosphorescence and fluorescence dual emission properties. Their dual emission ratio and RTP lifetime can be facilely tuned by the halide substituent synthesis. Bright afterglow with various emission duration for the investigated materials can be identified by the naked eyes. DFT calculations reveal that the excited states exhibit halide-ligand charge transfer (XLCT) character and the halide atoms play crucial role in their luminescence properties. Based on their regulatable dual emission and afterglow properties, a time-resolved anti-counterfeiting application is developed and avoids the overdependence on equipment, which further provides feasible design strategy of advanced portable anticounterfeiting technology.

Abstract:The development of polymer‐based persistent luminescence materials with color‐tunable organic afterglow and multiple responses is highly desirable for the applications in anti‐counterfeiting, flexible displays and data‐storage. However, achieving efficient persistent luminescence from a single‐phosphor system with multiple responses remains a challenging task. Herein, a hierarchical dual‐mode emission system is developed by doping 9H‐pyrido[3,4‐b]indole (PI2) into an amorphous polyacrylamide matrix, which exhibits color‐tunable afterglow due to excitation‐, temperature‐ and humidity‐dependence. Notably, the coexistence of isolated state and J‐aggregate state of the guest molecule not only provides excitation‐dependent afterglow color, but also leads to hierarchical temperature‐dependent afterglow color resulting from different thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) behaviors of the isolated and aggregated states. The complex responsiveness based on the hierarchical dual‐mode emission can serve for security features through inkjet printing and ink‐writing. These findings may provide further insight into the regulated persistent luminescence by isolated and aggregated phosphors in doped polymer systems and expand the scope of stimuli‐responsive organic afterglow materials for broader applications.

Abstract:Sb3+‐doped CsCdCl3 crystals are synthesized by hydrothermal method. The tunable afterglow emission with different duration is realized via regulating the doping concentration, and the longest duration lasting up to 5000 s is witnessed. The as‐synthesized compounds are further demonstrated in the optical anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption applications. Long afterglow luminescent materials have captured intense attention for their unique applications in biological imaging, photodynamic therapy, and optical anti‐counterfeiting. However, achieving highly efficient and tunable ultralong afterglow emission in all‐inorganic metal halides is an open challenge. Herein, Sb3+‐doped hexagonal CsCdCl3 metal halide is reported via hydrothermal reaction. Upon photoabsorption, the as‐synthesized compounds exhibit dual‐emission bands with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 59.6%, which can be attributed to the self‐trapped exciton emission out of the strong electron‐phonon coupling. After ceasing excitation of 365 nm, bright afterglow emission with the longest duration lasting up to 5000 s is witnessed in Sb3+‐doped CsCdCl3. More importantly, the color‐tunable and time‐dependent ultralong afterglow emission is realized via regulating the doping concentration of Sb3+, which should be due to the trap electrons increase gradually under high doping concentration. Given this unusual afterglow emission characteristics, the optical anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption are constructed based on as‐synthesized compounds. These findings not only help further understand the tunable afterglow emission mechanism in all‐inorganic metal halides, but also provide a new strategy for designing novel ultralong afterglow luminescent materials.

Abstract:Currently, optical responses, including photo-stimulated luminescence, thermo-luminescence, and persistent luminescence have been revealed to provide advanced security in the field of anti-counterfeiting technology. However, developing optical materials with multi-modal optical outputs is scarce but urgent. Here, a series of multimode luminescent materials of LaAlO3:0.02Pb(2+) were synthesized successfully via chemical unit co-substitution, with Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ substituting for La3+-Al3+. The co-substitution makes the Pb 2+ ions be located in two kinds of different crystal environments, mainly due to the differences in bond length of Pb-O and geometry of PbO12, which are related to the changes in centroid shift, Stokes shift and crystal field splitting of Pb2+. Therefore, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ results in new emissions at 410 nm, 320 nm and 420 nm, respectively, along with the intrinsic emission of Pb2+ at 460 nm. Because of the increased deep traps, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ also enhances the NIR emission, which is related to the defect-related luminescent center of V-O(++)-Pb-La' Meanwhile, the prepared samples show various colors at different temperatures, due to the varied thermal quenching of Pb2+ emissions and the NIR emission. The prepared phosphors exhibited dynamical and multimode luminescence, and they outputted inimitable and advanced signals for optical anticounterfeiting, indicating that they are the potential materials for anticounterfeiting technology.
On-demand modulating afterglow color of water-soluble polymers through phosphorescence FRET for multicolor security printing

Abstract:Developing full-color organic ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (OURTP) materials with continuously variable afterglow emission is of considerable practical importance in diverse optoelectronic applications but remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present an effective strategy for on-demand engineering of afterglow color in water-soluble polymeric systems via efficient phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer. Using a blue afterglow emitting water-soluble polymer as host and a series of fluorescent emitters with varied emissive colors as guests, afterglow emission is rationally modulated, conferring the full-color afterglow emission ranging from blue to red and even white with ultralong lifetimes up to 4.2 s and photoluminescence quantum yields of 36%.These water-soluble multicolor-emitting polymeric afterglow systems can function as OURTP security inks, and multilevel information encryption was successfully established by RGB-based multicolor security printing. These results present important guidance in developing high-performance afterglow polymers with on-demand color tuning ability for remarkable optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Color-tunable dual-mode organic afterglow excited by ultraviolet (UV) and white light was achieved from classical aggregation-caused quenching compounds for the first time. Specifically, two luminescent systems, which could produce significant organic afterglow composed of persistent thermally activated delayed fluorescence and ultralong organic phosphorescence under ambient conditions, were constructed by doping fluorescein sodium and calcein sodium into aluminum sulfate. Their lifetimes surpassed 600 ms, and the dopant concentrations were as low as 5×10-6 wt %. Moreover, the persistent luminescence colors of the materials could be tuned from blue to green and then to yellow by simply varying the concentrations of guest compounds or the temperature in the range of 260-340 K. Inspired by these exciting results, the afterglow materials were used for UV- and white-light-manipulated anti-counterfeiting and preparation of elastomers with different colors of persistent luminescence.

Abstract:Advanced fluorescence anti-counterfeiting technology has attracted the attention of researchers and encourages people to develop more materials with more colors and functions. Here, in order to achieve a full-band afterglow in the visible light region, we designed a composite CsPbI3-CsPbBr3/Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu2+,Dy3+@SiO2, which is composed of nanoscale all-inorganic cesium lead perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and long-afterglow luminescent materials Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu2+,Dy3+ (SMS). SMS is used to store light energy, and PQDs are used to control afterglow emission colors; through their energy transfer, the afterglow colors can be adjusted in the visible region. SiO2 is used as the coating material to improve the temporary stability of the nanocomposite. The composite mixed with oleic acid (OA) can be used as a dye, which exhibits different emitting colors and afterglow colors under different excitation environments. This research provided an idea for using long-afterglow luminescent materials and PQDs in the field of fluorescence anti-counterfeiting by double anti-counterfeiting of fluorescence and afterglow.

Abstract:Endowing metal halide hybrids (MHHs) with time-resolved emission and afterglow could significantly broaden their applications in fields such as information security and anti-counterfeiting. Nonetheless, there have been relatively few successes in developing organic cations with persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to construct MHHs with afterglow. In this work, we synthesize a new polyazole, 3,5-di(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine (DPTA), with green persistent RTP up to 1.5 s. The afterglow of DPTA reaches up to ~1.0 s even after being assembled into 0D (DPTAH3)InCl62.5H2O (DIC). Due to strong overlap between the triplet emission of DPTA and 1S03Px absorption of Sb3+, efficient triplet energy transfer (TET) with the highest yield of 65.3% and a near-unity of photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is achieved. More importantly, the afterglow persistence time of DIC:x%Sb can be easily tailored through Sb3+ doping. Given the Sb3+-dependent emission color and long persistence time, a series of DIC:x%Sb are successfully utilized to demonstrate high-security-level anti-counterfeiting application. This work show an effective strategy for designing new MHHs with tunable emission and afterglow persistence time.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive luminescent materials with time-dependent color are highly desirable in optical information encryption. In this study, multiple time-dependent color processes are achieved by light-responsive afterglow materials through the strategy of absorption compensation. Based on the single-emission band of light-responsive afterglow materials, the color of samples could show a time-dependent change from colored to colorless over several seconds. The strategy possesses high flexibility such that the stimulus light and emission color of light-responsive afterglow materials can be adjusted conveniently to adapt to various scenes. It is also beneficial to expand the capacity and complexity of information encryption. A three-color, time-resolved anticounterfeiting, and data encryption mode is demonstrated. This facile absorption compensation method based on light-response afterglow materials may promote the development of advanced dynamic information encryption.
Highly stable double-emission long afterglow phosphor for dynamic anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:A highly stable single-excitation double-emission long afterglow phosphor is reported for use in dynamic anti-counterfeiting. The red phosphor ZnCaGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ was introduced into the pores of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) by in situ polymerization, and the green phosphor SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ , when embedded in silicon dioxide, provided a long-lasting waterproof afterglow. The anti-counterfeiting material emits red light under UV excitation at 254 nm and, on stopping the excitation, produces a long-lasting green afterglow. Traditional anti-counterfeiting methods often require the use of a variety of different excitation light sources to achieve different luminous effects, while this innovative material requires only one excitation light source to achieve red light and green afterglow, and greatly simplifies the preparation process of anti-counterfeiting materials. In addition, this material is highly stable and can maintain its luminescent properties for a long time under various environmental conditions and is not prone to fading or degradation. Single-excitation dual-emission long afterglow anti-counterfeiting materials can effectively prevent products from being counterfeited, and this study provides new ideas and methods for technological innovation in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:0D hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) are considered to be promising luminescent emitters. 0D HMHs commonly exhibit self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions originating from the inorganic metal halide anion units. Exploring and utilizing the emission features of the organic cation units in 0D HMHs is highly desired to enrich their optical properties as multifunctional luminescent materials. Here, tunable emissions from organic and inorganic units are successfully achieved in triphenylsulfonium (Ph3 S+ )-based 0D HMHs. Notably, integrated afterglow and STE emissions with adjustable intensities are obtained in (Ph3 S)2 Sn1- x Tex Cl6 (x = 0-1) via the delicate combination of [SnCl6 ]2- and [TeCl6 ]2- . Moreover, such a strategy can be readily extended to develop other HMH materials with intriguing optical properties. As a demonstration, 0D (Ph3 S)2 Zn1- x Mnx Cl4 (x = 0-1) are constructed to achieve integrated afterglow and Mn2+ d-d emissions with high efficiency. Consequently, these novel 0D HMHs with colorful afterglow and STE emissions are applied in multiple anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:This work provided a facile strategy for achieving water‐soluble polymeric afterglow materials with ultralong lifetime, wide color‐tunability and persistent near‐infrared luminescence via constructing three/four‐component energy transfer systems that are capable of occurring non‐traditional phosphorescence resonance energy transfer and two‐step energy transfer cascade. Polymer‐based room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials show promising applications in anti‐counterfeiting. To further realize multiscale and/or multimodal anti‐counterfeiting, it is highly desirable to develop polymeric afterglow materials with multiple security features. Herein, a facile strategy is presented to endow polymeric afterglow materials with ultralong lifetime, wide color‐tunability, persistent near‐infrared (NIR) luminescence, and good water solubility via constructing non‐traditional phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET) and two‐step sequential resonance energy transfer systems. Specifically, the 1‐bromocarbazole derivatives with ultralong blue‐color RTP property act as the energy donor while traditional dyes with red/NIR luminescence act as the energy acceptor. By simply regulating the doping composition and concentration of these non‐traditional energy transfer systems, persistent and multicolor organic afterglow covering from the visible to NIR region is successfully realized. Notably, compared to the single‐step PRET, the two‐step sequential resonance energy transfer has the unique advantages of higher transfer efficiency of triplet excitons from the initial donor, a wider range of color‐tunability mediated by the intermediary acceptor, and enhanced delayed fluorescence efficiency of the final acceptor. Finally, these water‐soluble polymeric afterglow materials with ultralong lifetime, wide color‐tunability, and persistent NIR luminescence show great potential applications in advanced anti‐counterfeiting and information security technologies.

Abstract:Fluorescent materials have gradually become a hot spot in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Multifunctional phosphors used in anti-counterfeiting designs still have the problems of disordered reading sequences, difficulty in detection, and easy forging. To resolve these problems, we propose a new flexible dual-mode anti-counterfeiting design using a series of phosphors Ca3Al2Ge3O12:Cr3+ (CAG) with deep red persistent luminescence peaking at 722 nm. By adjusting the doping concentration of Cr3+ from 2% to 6%, deep red persistent luminescence with different afterglow intensities and durations can be achieved. By performing a series of thermoluminescence (TL) experiments under different conditions, the defects in materials were comprehensively and systematically analyzed. The defects contributed to the deep and shallow traps; this led to an obvious improvement in its long persistent luminescence (LPL). Such a dual-mode system with flexibility and simplicity properties is a good choice not only for anti-counterfeiting, but also for multi-layer information encryption, and a series of demo experiments based on the digital tube, Moss code, QR code, bar-code, school celebration pattern, and love letter information encryption design were implemented. Their dynamic anti-counterfeiting applications have been demonstrated, which provides a new way to rationally design multi-functional luminescent materials.

Abstract:This work presents a highly secure anticounterfeiting strategy based on upconversion/afterglow hybrids with tricolor emissions tuned by a single 975 nm laser. The hybrids are composed of NaYF4:Yb/Tm and NaYF4:Yb/Er microrods and CaS:Eu2+ afterglow phosphors. Under 975 nm excitation, the hybrids exhibit multicolor emissions from green to white by adjusting laser power and then emit red afterglow light when the 975 nm laser is off. Under synergistic excitation of the blue-green light emitted by Tm/Er microrods, the red afterglow emission not only has a strong initial intensity but also lasts for 3 s. Obvious trichromatic changes from green to white to red can be observed by the naked eye. A pattern printed by the hybrid ink exhibits tricolor emissions by laser adjustment and switch. This proves that upconversion/afterglow hybrids are an excellent candidate for anticounterfeiting applications with high-level security but a simple recognition method.
