Abstract:This study sought to examine college students' attributions to failure in biology. Through the use of scenarios, we were interested in determining how males and females viewed the attributions of ability, effort, and learning strategy use. A 3 (attribution: ability, effort, strategies) 2 2 (scenario gender) 2 2 (respondent gender) factorial design was used to analyze four future goal statements and four emotional response statements. Results indicated a significant effect for attribution for three of the four future goal items, with participants believing most strongly that future goals could be met if the scenario student used the appropriate strategies. There was also a significant effect for attribution for all four of the emotional response items, with participants having the strongest emotional reaction when the attribution was to effort. Respondent gender interacted with attribution only on one emotional response item. Collectively these results indicate differences in patterns of responses between future goal and emotional items. Moreover,these results are important for learning-to-learn courses designed to teach effective strategy use.

Abstract:Attribution, i.e. the systematic ascription of causes and effects in situations of failure or success, has so far received little attention in HCI research. In this paper we investigate specific computer-related attribution styles by means of a diary study and an online survey. By using cluster analysis we developed a typology of nine distinct attribution styles that come into effect in success or failure situations when using computers. Also, we were able to distinguish attribution styles that can be assumed to be favorable or unfavorable regarding computer mastery. Methodical issues in computer-related attribution research and implications for research and practice are discussed.
Attribution-based motivation treatment efficacy in an online learning environment for students who differ in cognitive elaboration

Abstract:Attribution-based motivation treatments can boost performance in competitive achievement settings (Perry and Hamm 2017), yet their efficacy relative to mediating processes and affect-based treatments remains largely unexamined. In a two-semester, pre-post, randomized treatment study (n = 806), attributional retraining (AR) and stress-reduction (SR) treatments were administered in an online learning environment to first-year college students who differed in cognitive elaboration (low, high). Low elaborators who received AR outperformed their SR peers by nearly a letter grade on a class test assessed 5 months post-treatment. Path analysis revealed this AR-performance linkage was mediated by causal attributions, perceived control, and positive and negative achievement emotions in a hypothesized causal sequence. Results advance the literature by showing AR (vs. SR) improved performance indirectly via cognitive and affective process variables specified by Weiner’s (1985a, 2012) attribution theory of motivation and emotion.

Investigating the role of technostress, cognitive appraisal and coping strategies on students' learning performance in higher education: a multidimensional transactional theory of stress approach

Abstract:Purpose COVID-19 has galvanized educational institutions to rapidly adopt technology-enhanced learning (TEL) environment where students are required to use and manage a diverse set of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Using the Transactional Theory of Stress, the authors investigate the impact of a TEL environment on students' stress, cognitive appraisal and coping. The authors also explore how the TEL environment impacts students' learning satisfaction and performance. Design/methodology/approach A survey using Qualtrics was developed to collect the data from 275 undergraduate students. The authors used the Partial Least Squares (PLS) through SmartPLS for instrument validation and testing of the structural model. The reflective-formative model was applied as the measures used to evaluate the first-order constructs are unidimensional, and the second-order construct has a formative measurement. Findings Students experienced technology-related stress due to ICT use. The negative appraisal such as harm and threat leads to emotion-focused coping among students, while the constructive appraisal such as positive and challenge leads to problem-focused coping. Emotion-focused coping was found to negatively impact learning satisfaction, while problem-focused coping was found to positively impact satisfaction. The authors also found that students with a higher level of experience with online and hybrid classes, higher confidence in computer usage and lower anxiety are better equipped to deal with technostress. Research limitations/implications This study provides the first comprehensive technostress model in the IS literature that uses formative modeling to explain technostress creators and inhibitors and emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping, as was intended by the Transactional Theory of Stress. The result allows for rethinking TEL environment by drawing attention to strategies that can reduce technological complexity and uncertainty. For future research, it may be helpful to perform a longitudinal or experimental study to obtain rigorous causal inference. Originality/value There is limited research on the impact of technostress in the field of higher education. Also, technostress has been used inconsistently in Information Systems research, with the majority of research focusing on technostress creators and inhibitors only. This research incorporates all the constructs of the original theory adding new knowledge to the IS literature about the nature and causes of stress created by the use of technology.

Cognitive Style and Self-Efficacy: Predicting Student Success in Online Distance Education

Abstract:This study was designed to identify those learner attributes that may be used to predict student success (in terms of grade point average) in a Web-based distance education setting. Students enrolled in six Web-based, general education distance education courses at a community college were asked to complete the Group Embedded Figures Test for field dependence/independence and the Online Technologies Self-Efficacy Scale to determine their entry-level confidence with necessary computer skills for online learning. Although the students who were more field independent tended to have higher online technologies self-efficacy, they did not receive higher grades than those students who were field dependent and had lower online technologies self-efficacy. Cognitive style scores and online technologies self-efficacy scores were poor predictors of student success in online distance education courses.

Abstract:Although research on online education has skyrocketed in recent years due to the pandemic, hybrid education, which is the transition period, has been relatively ignored. In the context of hybrid education, studies focusing on instructors from a motivational perspective are also quite rare. This study deals with the influential variables in the intention to continue online education with a motivational approach. The technology acceptance model is extended with the self-determination theory (competence, autonomy, relatedness), a framework for emotions (positive, negative), and constructs for system quality (system compatibility, system satisfaction). The participants consisted of 308 instructors from 12 different universities. The analyses of the study were carried out with PLS-SEM technique. The results showed that none of the constructs other than perceived usefulness and relatedness had an effect on continuance intention. On the other hand, two of the three strongest relationships in the model were between continuance intention and emotional outcomes. Path modeling results indicate that continuance intention has a crucial role in triggering both positive and negative experience. In addition, the results suggest that the findings for motivation-based variables differ clearly from those obtained in normal settings when it comes to a unique setting such as hybrid education.

Abstract:Abstract The challenges of higher education can be stressful, anxiety-producing, and sometimes depressing for students. Such negative emotions may influence students’ attitudes toward assessment, such as whether it is perceived as acceptable to engage in plagiarism. However, it is not known whether any impact of negative emotions on attitudes toward plagiarism translate into actual plagiarism behaviours. In two studies conducted at two universities (Study 1 N = 718; Study 2 N = 490), we examined whether negative emotionality influenced plagiarism behaviour via attitudes, norms, and intentions as predicted by the theory of planned behaviour. In both studies, negative affect predicted plagiarism intentions mediated by perceived norms, and intentions predicted plagiarism behaviour. These findings suggest that students’ negative emotionality is a risk for plagiarism engagement and that higher education institutions should support students’ emotional well-being, especially regarding assessment practices.

Abstract:Attribution theory, advanced by Bernard Weiner and his colleagues is an important, though sometimes controversial, theory that has demonstrated vitality and longevity. The cross-disciplinary application of attribution theory to, for example, organizational behavior, marketing, and education, has stimulated the interests of researchers and contributed to its theoretical validity and reliability. Compared to other disciplines, the application and theoretical testing of attribution theory are in the "spring" of their existence in the field of Information Systems (IS). This paper proposes that conceptualization and measurement of the causal attributions individuals make for their computer performance and performance histories, positive and negative, are critical to understanding computer adoption and post-adoption behaviors. We first identify the causal attributions that enterprise resource planning (ERP) users make for their computer performance histories. We then describe the conceptualization and development of multi-item scales to capture these causal attributions. This work contributes to theory and practice through (1) the development and psychometric testing of several attributional scales for advancing our understanding of the multi-theoretical stream of research investigating technology adoption at the individual level, and (2) by providing a description of a theoretical multi-method approach for the rigorous scale development of causal attributions. Our work suggests that researchers must consider several fundamental principles of attribution theory when investigating IS artifacts during various adoption phases.

Abstract:Italian schoolboys between the ages of 9 and 10 participated in three experiments guided by attribution theory as conceptualised by Weiner (1985, 1986). In Experiment 1, following teacher-emotional feedback of anger or sympathy for failure, attributional inferences regarding low ability or lack of effort as the cause of that failure were rated. In Experiment 2, controllable and uncontrollable causes of a social transgression were given, and children rated the anticipated anger of the “victim” and their intention to withhold or reveal the cause. In Experiment 3, effects of perceived causality and related emotions of anger and sympathy (pity) with regard to helping behaviour were investigated. Results replicate previous US findings and largely support the established linkages between attribution-emotion-action as proposed by Weiner (1986).

Abstract:A large body of research has documented Weiner's theory as it applies to achievement contexts, highlighting the role of the causal dimensions (locus of causality, stability, and controllability) as antecedents of specific emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions. The aim of this article is to address important, and as yet unanswered questions, by focusing on the relationship between these causal dimensions and their cognitive and behavioral consequences, and by meta-analyzing research using the direct-rating method to measure the causal dimensions identified by Weiner (1985, 2005). 43 studies using direct-rating measures of causal dimensions, reporting 57 correlation matrices involving 15,213 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Using meta-analytic structural equation modeling, the fit of the cognition-expectancy-action sequence of Weiner's model, its structural parameters and between-sample variations were examined. Our model fitted the data well, and the structural parameters showed that the causal dimensions influenced behavioral adjustment and performance through psychological consequences. The results also revealed large effect size heterogeneity across studies, explained by several moderators such as event valence. Abstract:This study examined the role of emotions in predicting university faculty teaching and research performance while addressing the methodological limitations of past research. Recruited using social media, 312 early-career faculty completed an online survey containing six newly adapted multi-item emotion scales assessing enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom related to both teaching and research. Analyses supported the reliability as well as convergent and divergent validity of the scales. Results of structural equation modeling revealed that enjoyment positively predicted perceived success whereas anxiety and boredom negatively predicted success in both teaching and research, even after accounting for social-environmental predictors. The emotions also significantly related to faculty research publication and citation counts. In terms of implications for faculty development, the findings suggest that fostering value and control may be a mechanism for improving faculty emotions and performance in teaching and research. The discussion includes future theoretical and methodological contributions.

Abstract:Examined the relations of causal attributions and affect to judgments of help-giving in a total of 280 undergraduates in 6 experiments. The influence of 3 dimensions of causality (locus, stability, and control) on judgments concerning the lending of class notes was evaluated. Ratings of help were lowest when the cause of the need was internal to the actor and controllable (e.g., lack of effort). It is suggested that ascriptions to internal controllable factors maximized negative affect (disgust and anger) and promoted avoidance behavior. However, attributions to uncontrollable factors (e.g., ability or teacher shortcomings) were anticipated to generate positive affect (sympathy) and give rise to approach behavior (help). These hypotheses and an attributional model of helping were investigated using a simulational judgment paradigm with both correlational and experimental designs and scenarios describing a drunk or a disabled individual in need of aid. ANOVA indicated the existence of a temporal sequence of attribution-affect-action in which attributions guide feelings, but emotional reactions provide the motor and direction for behavior. (39 ref)

External and Internal Predictors of Student Satisfaction with Online Learning Achievement

Abstract:Building and testing a framework of interactive and indirect predictors of student satisfaction would help us understand how to improve student online learning experience. The current study proposed that external predictors such as poor technological, environmental, and pedagogical factors would be internalized as negative psychological traits and indirectly predict student satisfaction in online learning. Results of multivariate regressions with 5824 Chinese undergraduate students demonstrated that instructors’ online teaching experience and communication with students had a stronger predictive effect on student satisfaction than wireless network quality and learning environment. Providing after-class reviewing materials to students or having longer self-learning time would not buffer students from negative external factors. Structural equation modeling analysis results showed that inferior technological, environmental, and pedagogical factors would be internalized into negative attitudes and emotions toward online learning and indirectly predict student satisfaction. Our study has implications for better understanding the extensive influence of online learning barriers caused by external conditions and building preventive mechanisms through the improvement of instructors’ teaching experience and communication with students.

Abstract:The adoption of Generative AI in education presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly regarding its potential to foster student dependency. However, the psychological drivers of this dependency remain unclear. This study addresses this gap by applying the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model and Basic Psychological Needs (BPN) theory to explore how specific personality traits—neuroticism, self-critical perfectionism, and impulsivity—contribute to AI dependency through needs frustration, negative academic emotions, and reinforced performance beliefs. Data were collected from 958 university students ( M age = 21.67) across various disciplines. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationships among the variables. Neuroticism, self-critical perfectionism, and impulsivity were found to be significantly associated with increase needs frustration and negative academic emotions, which in turn reinforced students' positive beliefs about performance of AI tools, deepening their dependency. The study also uncovered complex serial mediation effects, highlighting intricate psychological pathways that drive maladaptive AI use. This research provides a critical insight into the interplay between personality traits and technology use, shedding light on the nuanced ways in which individual differences influence dependency on generative AI. The findings offer practical strategies for educators to promote balanced AI use and support student well-being in educational settings.

Abstract:Online education is booming, and knowledge management is integrated with artificial intelligence, information technology, robotics, and cognitive science to drive innovation. The online teaching system is the product that sets off a revolution in education. The teaching mode based on knowledge management is essential in promoting teachers' thinking agility, teaching innovation, knowledge iteration, and optimal decision-making. Although the online teaching software has been widely used, there are some defects in the use of the software such as function, experience, and interaction, which need to be improved. The empirical research takes teachers in Chinese tertiary institutions as object and aims to identify the main determinants of teachers' willingness to continue using online teaching systems from the perspective of intrinsic motivation. The technology acceptance model (TAM) and hedonic motivation system adoption model (HMSAM) were combined to form the theoretical model. The structural equation model (SEM) was built to measure the variable coefficient and mediating effect. The re-search results illustrate that telepresence, functionality, system service, peer influence, and control positively influence willingness to continue using. The mediating effects of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and focused immersion were confirmed. It reflects that psychological factors are as important as perception factors in online teaching system adoption. This study provides valuable guidance and constructive knowledge, helping the company to develop the online teaching system.

Abstract:With the development of modern technology, a variety of values and social thoughts based on streaming media have caused a huge impact on the field of ideology and culture, and contemporary college students are deeply affected. Nowadays, college students are very prone to problems such as lack of empathy, distorted values, and weakening of life values. College students commit suicide, homicide, and other illegal and criminal incidents due to unhealthy psychological reasons. This paper abstracts the emotional cognitive ability of college students into a psychological resilience model and then analyzes it. It is concluded that the overall applicability of college students to emotional cognition education in the psychological classroom is not high. In order to change the overall low applicability of this situation, this paper pioneers the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology to the emotional cognitive education system of college students' psychological classrooms. Through the experiment, four results of the two psychological classroom models were obtained under different genders, different grades, different household registration types, and comprehensive conditions. The improved mode of combining the Internet of Things technology with emotional cognitive education can increase the applicability of college students to emotional cognitive education in the psychological classroom by about 6.97%. It helps to cultivate and educate the positive emotions of college students and promote the comprehensive and healthy development of college students.

Abstract:Given the widespread use of the Internet, researchers have begun to examine the personal and social consequences associated with excessive online involvement. The present study examined college students' problematic Internet use (PIU) behaviors within the framework of Jessor and Jessor's (1977) problem-behavior theory. Its specific aim was to investigate the links between PIU with both internalizing (depression, social anxiety) and externalizing (substance use and other risky behaviors) problems. Relevant variables from the perceived environmental system, the personality system, and the behavioral system were entered in a canonical correlation analysis. The analysis yielded two distinct functions: the first function, titled traditional problem-behavior syndrome, characterized students who are impulsive, hold socially deviant attitudes and show a propensity to use tobacco and illicit drugs. The second function, titled problematic Internet-behavior syndrome, characterized students who are socially anxious, depressed, report conflictive family relations, and show a propensity toward PIU. Thus, PIU did not share the characteristics typically associated with the traditional problem-behavior syndrome consistent with problem-behavior theory, but showed correlates more consistent with internalizing rather than externalizing problems.

Abstract:Recent developments in affective computing have provided more options in the way online education can be delivered. However, research on how affective computing can be used in online education is lacking. The research objectives are twofold: to investigate the influence of affective EAs on students’ motivation, enjoyment, learning efficacy and intention to use, and to uncover factors influencing their intention to use an online tutorial with affective EAs. To achieve this, 190 tertiary students participated in a between-subjects experiment (text-only vs. affective-EAs). Students benefited from the affective EAs in the tutorial as indicated by the increased learning motivation and enjoyment. Moreover, relevance, confidence, satisfaction, affective enjoyment, and behavioral enjoyment were found to be significant predictors for intention to use.

Abstract:We argue that not only do attitude, perceived behavior controls, and social norms influence intention to adopt technology, but inspiration, memory, and their interaction (inspirational memory) do as well. The current study aimed to determine whether inspiration can be manipulated and, if so, how increased inspiration affects both memory and the situational motivation of end users to accept new technology. The present paper hypothesizes that inspiration positively influences intention to use technology. We also postulate that memory, as measured by decreased time to complete a test script after being exposed to an inspirational stimulus, positively influences intention to use technology. Further, we contend that memory, as measured by decreased number of errors in the completed script after being exposed to an inspirational stimulus, positively influences intention to use technology. Finally we show that the interaction of memory and inspiration positively influences intention to use technology. The proposed study hypotheses were examined via structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses of data collected from 338 users. The rest of the paper will present a comprehensive conceptual model and then build it piece by piece, presenting hypotheses along the way.
