Stabilizing Skyrmions by Nonuniform Strain in Ferromagnetic Thin Films Without a Magnetic Field

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions with topologically protected spin textures have recently attracted much attention due to their fascinating properties and potential application in advanced spintronics devices. For ferromagnetic thin films, skyrmions usually appear only in the presence of magnetic field. The stabilization of skyrmions in the absence of magnetic field remains an important challenge. Here, using a real-space phase field model based on Ginzburg-Landau theory, we demonstrate that a nonuniform strain can stabilize skyrmions in the FeGa thin film without a magnetic field. The phase field simulations show that the FeGa thin film exhibits a metastable skyrmion phase in the absence of magnetic field when a nonuniform strain with a cosine profile is applied. It is found that the metastable skyrmions can be transformed into a helical phase if a localized magnetic field or pulse of spin-polarized current is applied, resulting in the coexistence of skyrmion and helical phases in the ferromagnetic thin films. Furthermore, the skyrmion and helical phases can remain dynamically stable during the motion driven by a spin-polarized current. The coexistence of skyrmion and helical phases in the ferromagnetic thin films without magnetic field has potential application in skyrmion-based spintronic devices.
Dynamics of ferrimagnetic skyrmionium driven by spin-orbit torque

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmionlike spin texture with nanoscale size and high mobility. It is a topologically trivial but dynamically stable structure, which can be used as a nonvolatile information carrier for next-generation spintronic storage and computing devices. Here we study the dynamics of a skyrmionium driven by the spin torque in a ferrimagnetic nanotrack. It is found that the direction of motion is jointly determined by the internal configuration of a skyrmionium and the spin polarization vector. Besides, the deformation of a skyrmionium induced by the intrinsic skyrmion Hall effect depends on both the magnitude of the driving force and the net angular momentum. The ferrimagnetic skyrmionium is most robust at the angular momentum compensation point, whose dynamics is quite similar to the skyrmionium in antiferromagnet. The skyrmion Hall effect is perfectly prohibited, where it is possible to observe the position of the skyrmionium by measuring the magnetization. Furthermore, the current-induced dynamics of a ferrimagnetic skyrmionium is compared with that of a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic skyrmionium. We also make a comparison between the motion of a ferrimagnetic skyrmionium and a skyrmion. Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for the development of high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate the room-temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 coupled to Pt, showing the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin–orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 and result in a strong skyrmion Hall effect characterized by a negative deflection angle and hopping motion. Further, we show that the velocity and depinning threshold of the skyrmion bubbles can be modified by exchange coupling Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 to an in-plane magnetized Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 layer, which distorts the spin texture of the skyrmions and leads to directional-dependent rectification of their dynamics. This effect, which is equivalent to a magnetic ratchet, is exploited to control the skyrmion flow in a racetrack-like device.

Ferroelectric Control of Magnetic Skyrmions in Multiferroic Heterostructures

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions with a topological particle nature are considered as potential information carriers for future spintronics memory and logic devices. The stabilization of magnetic skyrmions at zero magnetic field in nanostructured components is a prerequisite for incorporating them into advanced nonvolatile memory devices. Here, using a real-space phase field model based on Ginzburg-Landau theory, we demonstrate that ferroelectric polarization can stabilize magnetic skyrmions at zero magnetic field in multiferroic heterostructures composed of MnSi, ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$, and ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$. The stabilization of magnetic skyrmions in multiferroic heterostructures essentially depends on the directions of spontaneous polarizations and the size ratios of different constituents, in which polarization-induced inhomogeneous strain plays an important role. By applying an electric field, the polarization switching takes place in the ferroelectric constituent and the polarization-induced strain changes in the multiferroic heterostructures, resulting in a transition from skyrmion to helical phase in the ferromagnetic constituent. In addition, the skyrmion and helical phases can coexist in the absence of an external field and be switched reversibly by a local magnetic field with a small magnitude. Stabilization and control of magnetic skyrmions by spontaneous polarization at zero magnetic field may create additional opportunities for nonvolatile skyrmion memory devices.
Vanishing skyrmion Hall effect at the angular momentum compensation temperature of a ferrimagnet

Abstract:Charged particles exhibit the Hall effect in the presence of magnetic fields. Analogously, ferromagnetic skyrmions with non-zero topological charges and finite fictitious magnetic fields exhibit the skyrmion Hall effect, which is detrimental for applications. The skyrmion Hall effect has been theoretically predicted to vanish for antiferromagnetic skyrmions because the fictitious magnetic field, proportional to net spin density, is zero. We experimentally confirm this prediction by observing current-driven transverse elongation of pinned ferrimagnetic bubbles. Remarkably, the skyrmion Hall effect, estimated with the angle between the current and bubble elongation directions, vanishes at the angular momentum compensation temperature where the net spin density vanishes. This study establishes a direct connection between the fictitious magnetic field and spin density, offering a pathway towards the realization of skyrmionic devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmion is a promising building block for developing information storage and computing devices. It can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic thin film with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The moving ferromagnetic skyrmion may show the skyrmion Hall effect, that is, the skyrmion shows a transverse shift when it is driven by a spin current. Here, we numerically and theoretically study the current-driven dynamics of a ferromagnetic nanoscale skyrmion in the presence of the anisotropic DMI, where the skyrmion has an elliptical shape. The skyrmion Hall effect of the elliptical skyrmion is investigated. It is found that the skyrmion Hall angle can be controlled by tuning the profile of elliptical skyrmion. Our results reveal the relation between the skyrmion shape and the skyrmion Hall effect, which could be useful for building skyrmion-based spintronic devices with preferred skyrmion Hall angle. Also, our results provide a method for the minimization of skyrmion Hall angle for applications based on in-line motion of skyrmions.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviours and large potential in highly energy-efficient spintronic device applications. The main obstacles so far are that skyrmions have been observed in only a few exotic materials and at low temperatures, and fast current-driven motion of individual skyrmions has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the observation of stable magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrathin transition metal ferromagnets with magnetic transmission soft X-ray microscopy. We demonstrate the ability to generate stable skyrmion lattices and drive trains of individual skyrmions by short current pulses along a magnetic racetrack at speeds exceeding 100 m s(-1) as required for applications. Our findings provide experimental evidence of recent predictions and open the door to room-temperature skyrmion spintronics in robust thin-film heterostructures.

Abstract:The current-driven motion of magnetic skyrmions is an essential functionality for next-generation memory and logic devices. This paper provides a complete, detailed experimental study of a model system composed of an ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO film, in which 100-nm skyrmions move at high speeds of 100 m/s and exhibit a velocity-dependent skyrmion Hall effect. Detailed characterization of the film properties using experiment, analytical modeling, and micromagnetic simulation reveals that this behavior can be fully accounted for by pinning effects, unlike some claims in the literature. Abstract:The recent discovery of a Skyrmion crystal phase in an insulating multiferroic compound Cu2OSeO3 calls for new ways and ideas to manipulate the Skyrmions in the absence of spin transfer torque from the conduction electrons. It is shown here that the position-dependent electric field, pointed along the direction of the average induced dipole moment of the Skyrmion, can induce the Hall motion of the Skyrmion with its velocity orthogonal to the field gradient. Finite Gilbert damping produces longitudinal motion. Inter-Skyrmion interaction leads to the reduction of the drift speed. We find a rich variety of resonance modes excited by an ac electric field.

Abstract:A magnetic skyrmion is a particle-like topological soliton, which is an ideal candidate for developing high-density storage and logic devices due to its nonvolatility and tunability. In view of the particle motion characteristics of skyrmion, different skyrmions in a material inevitably interact in the form of short-range repulsion and long-range attraction. In this work, the dynamic characteristics of skyrmion collision in a ferromagnetic Co thin film are investigated by using micromagnetic simulations. It is found that the dynamic behavior of skyrmion after collision is highly dependent on the size of the strip, the initial velocity of skyrmion and magnetic damping constant. For the collision of two skyrmions, when the strip width exceeds the critical value, the skyrmions form a pair and rotate counterclockwise in the form of spiral and breath. It is interesting that the rotation and breath of skyrmions keep the same periodicity under the negligible damping, and the frequency increases with the increase of the initial velocity of skyrmion. Further, the collision of a system of three skyrmions reveals that they interact in pairs to form closed periodic trajectories. The results of the present work not only give an insight into the multi-skyrmion dynamics, but also provide guidance for the development of spintronic devices based on multi-skyrmion motion.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are scarcely investigated for single-crystal quality films, for which skyrmions may have a remarkable performance. Even in the limited studies in this aspect, the skyrmions are usually probed by the topological Hall effect, missing important information on dynamic properties. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation on the generation/manipulation of magnetic skyrmions in La0.67Ba0.33MnO3 single-crystal films. Using the technique of magnetic force microscopy, the current-driven skyrmion dynamics are directly observed. Unlike isolated skyrmions produced by magnetic field alone, closely packed skyrmions can be generated by electric pulses in a magnetic background, with a high density (∼60/μm2) and a small size (dozens of nanometers). The threshold current moving skyrmions is ∼2.3 × 104 A/cm2, 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that required by metallic multilayers or van der Waals ferromagnetic heterostructures. Our work demonstrates the great potential of single-crystal oxide films in developing skyrmion-based devices.

Abstract:Since the discovery of ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals, significant interest on such 2D magnets has emerged, inspired by their appealing physical properties and integration with other 2D family for unique heterostructures. In known 2D magnets, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) stabilizes perpendicular magnetic anisotropy down to one or a few monolayers. Such a strong SOC could also lift the chiral degeneracy, leading to the formation of topological magnetic textures such as skyrmions through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, we report the experimental observation of Néel-type chiral magnetic skyrmions and their lattice (SkX) formation in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT). We demonstrate the ability to drive an individual skyrmion by short current pulses along a vdW heterostructure, FGT/h−BN , as highly required for any skyrmion-based spintronic device. Using first principle calculations supported by experiments, we unveil the origin of DMI being the interfaces with oxides, which then allows us to engineer vdW heterostructures for desired chiral states. Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions promise breakthroughs in future memory and computing devices due to their inherent stability and small size. Their creation and current driven motion have been recently observed at room temperature, but the key mechanisms of their formation are not yet well-understood. Here it is shown that in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures, pulsed currents can drive morphological transitions between labyrinth-like, stripe-like, and skyrmionic states. Using high-resolution X-ray microscopy, the spin texture evolution with temperature and magnetic field is imaged and it is demonstrated that with transient Joule heating, topological charges can be injected into the system, driving it across the stripe-skyrmion boundary. The observations are explained through atomistic spin dynamic and micromagnetic simulations that reveal a crossover to a global skyrmionic ground state above a threshold magnetic field, which is found to decrease with increasing temperature. It is demonstrated how by tuning the phase stability, one can reliably generate skyrmions by short current pulses and stabilize them at zero field, providing new means to create and manipulate spin textures in engineered chiral ferromagnets.

Abstract:The magnetic field is one of the widely used external stimuli to manipulate magnetic skyrmions. On the other hand, the skyrmion Hall effect can force the skyrmion to move perpendicular to the driving direction, which may lead to the annihilation of the skyrmion at the sample edge. Here, we study a skyrmion guide based on a nanotrack, where the skyrmion is controlled by the spin-transfer torque or spin–orbit torque in the presence of an in-plane field. The effects of spin-torque parameters, spin polarization directions, and magnetic field with an appropriate magnitude on the skyrmion motion are explored. Both static and dynamic properties of the skyrmion are demonstrated through micromagnetic simulations. Our results can be useful for the development of topological transport channels for spintronic devices.

Abstract:Spintronic devices based on magnetic skyrmions are a promising candidate for next-generation memory applications due to their nanometre size, topologically protected stability and efficient current-driven dynamics. Since the recent discovery of room-temperature magnetic skyrmions, there have been reports of current-driven skyrmion displacement on magnetic tracks and demonstrations of current pulse-driven skyrmion generation. However, the controlled annihilation of a single skyrmion at room temperature has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate the deterministic writing and deleting of single isolated skyrmions at room temperature in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films with a device-compatible stripline geometry. The process is driven by the application of current pulses, which induce spin–orbit torques, and is directly observed using a time-resolved nanoscale X-ray imaging technique. We provide a current pulse profile for the efficient and deterministic writing and deleting process. Using micromagnetic simulations, we also reveal the microscopic mechanism of the topological fluctuations that occur during this process.

Enhanced thermally-activated skyrmion diffusion with tunable effective gyrotropic force

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions, topologically-stabilized spin textures that emerge in magnetic systems, have garnered considerable interest due to a variety of electromagnetic responses that are governed by the topology. The topology that creates a microscopic gyrotropic force also causes detrimental effects, such as the skyrmion Hall effect, which is a well-studied phenomenon highlighting the influence of topology on the deterministic dynamics and drift motion. Furthermore, the gyrotropic force is anticipated to have a substantial impact on stochastic diffusive motion; however, the predicted repercussions have yet to be demonstrated, even qualitatively. Here we demonstrate enhanced thermally-activated diffusive motion of skyrmions in a specifically designed synthetic antiferromagnet. Suppressing the effective gyrotropic force by tuning the angular momentum compensation leads to a more than 10 times enhanced diffusion coefficient compared to that of ferromagnetic skyrmions. Consequently, our findings not only demonstrate the gyro-force dependence of the diffusion coefficient but also enable ultimately energy-efficient unconventional stochastic computing.

Current-driven dynamics of antiferromagnetic skyrmions: from skyrmion Hall effects to hybrid inter-skyrmion scattering

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions have emerged as a highly promising avenue in the realm of spintronics, particularly for the development of advanced racetrack memory devices. A distinguishing feature of AFM skyrmions is their zero topological charge and hence anticipated zero skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). Here, we unveil that the latter is surprisingly finite under the influence of spin-transfer torque, depending on the direction of the injected current impinging on intrinsic AFM skyrmions emerging in CrPdFe trilayer on Ir(111) surface. Hinging on first-principles combined with atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we identify the origin of the SkHE and uncover that FM skyrmions in the underlying Fe layer act as effective traps for AFM skyrmions, confining them and reducing their velocity. These findings hold significant promise for spintronic applications, the design of multi-purpose skyrmion-tracks, advancing our understanding of AFM-FM skyrmion interactions and hybrid soliton dynamics in heterostructures.

We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.

Driving skyrmions in flow regime in synthetic ferrimagnets

Abstract:Despite significant advances in the last decade regarding the room temperature stabilization of skyrmions or their current induced dynamics, the impact of local material inhomogeneities still remains an important issue that impedes to reach the regime of steady state motion of these spin textures. Here, we study the spin-torque driven motion of skyrmions in synthetic ferrimagnetic multilayers with the aim of achieving high mobility and reduced skyrmion Hall effect. We consider Pt|Co|Tb multilayers of various thicknesses with antiferromagnetic coupling between the Co and Tb magnetization. The increase of Tb thickness in the multilayers allows to reduce the total magnetic moment and increases the spin-orbit torques allowing to reach velocities up to 400 m.s-1 for skyrmions with diameters of about 160 nm. We demonstrate that due to reduced skyrmion Hall effect, combined with the edge repulsion of the magnetic track making the skyrmions moving along the track without any transverse deflection. Further, by comparing the field-induced domain wall motion and current-induced skyrmion motion, we demonstrate that the skyrmions at the largest current densities present all the characteristics of a dynamical flow regime.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions have garnered attention for their potential roles in spintronic applications, such as information carriers in computation, data storage, and nano-oscillators due to their small size, topological stability, and the requirement of small electric currents to manipulate them. Two key challenges in harnessing skyrmions are the stabilization requirement through a strong out-of-plane field, and the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). Here, we present a systematic model study of skyrmions in FM/AFM multi-layer structures by employing both atomistic Monte Carlo and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that skyrmions stabilized by exchange bias have superior stability than field-stabilized skyrmions due to the formation of a magnetic imprint within the AFM layer. Additionally, stacking two skyrmion hosting FM layers between two antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers suppresses the SkHE and enables the transport of AFM-coupled skyrmions with high velocity in the order of a few Km/s. This proposed multi-layer configuration could serve as a pathway to overcome existing limitations in the development of skyrmion-based devices, and the insights obtained through this study contribute significantly to the broader understanding of topological spin textures in magnetic materials.
