Abstract:The dual-polarization radar characteristics of severe storms are commonly used as indicators to estimate the size and intensity of deep convective updrafts. In this study, we track rapid fluctuations in updraft intensity and size by objectively identifying polarimetric fingerprints such as ZDR and KDP columns, which serve as proxies for mixed-phase updraft strength. We quantify the volume of ZDR and KDP columns to evaluate their utility in diagnosing temporal variability in lightning flash characteristics. Specifically, we analyze three severe storms that developed in environments with low-to-moderate instability and strong 0–6 km wind shear in northern Alabama during the 2016-17 VORTEX-Southeast field campaign. In these three cases (a tornadic supercell embedded in stratiform precipitation, a nontornadic supercell, and a supercell embedded within a quasi-linear convective system), we find that the volume of the KDP columns exhibits a stronger correlation with the total flash rate . The higher covariability of KDP column volume with total flash rate suggests that the overall electrification and precipitation microphysics was dominated by cold cloud processes. The lower covariability with ZDR column volume indicates the presence of nonsteady updrafts or a less prominent role of warm rain processes in graupel growth and subsequent electrification. Furthermore, we observe that the majority of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning strikes carried negative charge to the ground. In contrast to findings from a tornadic supercell over the Great Plains, lightning flash initiations in the Alabama storms primarily occurred outside the footprint of the ZDR and KDP column objects.

Abstract:A convective cell storm containing two differential reflectivity (ZDR) columns was observed with a dual-polarization phased-array radar (X-PAR) in Xixian County. Since a ZDR column is believed to correspond to a strong updraft and a single convective cell is considered to have a simple dynamic structure with one updraft core, how these two ZDR columns form and coexist is the focus of this study. The dynamic and microphysical structures around the two ZDR columns are studied under the mutual confirmation of the X-PAR observations and a cloud model simulation. The main ZDR column forms and maintains in an updraft whose bottom corresponds to a convergence of low-level and mid-level flow; it lasts from the early stages to the later stages. The secondary ZDR column emerges at the rear of the horizontal reflectivity (ZH) core relative to the moving direction of the cell; it forms in the middle stages and lasts for a shorter period, and its formation is under an air lifting forced by the divergent outflow of precipitation. Therefore, the secondary ZDR column is only a by-product in the middle stages of the convection rather than an indicator of a new or enhanced convection.

Abstract:Abstract A global TRMM database of tropical cloud system precipitation features (PFs), which provides useful observational constraints on cloud system properties, is used to evaluate the bulk microphysics schemes in a cloud-resolving model (CRM). The simulation of the Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) of 11–12 August 1999 during the Kwajalein Experiment (KWAJEX) is executed using the 3D University of Utah CRM, which employs a one-moment bulk, three-ice category microphysical parameterization. The simulated precipitation features are compared with climatological “norms” for Kwajalein locations from the TRMM PF database to evaluate the precipitation microphysics of the cloud model simulation. The model-simulated reflectivities are also compared with vertical profiles of radar reflectivity obtained from a ground-based precipitation radar. Comparison of simulation results with the TRMM observation statistics indicates that the model tends to underestimate microwave brightness temperatures at ice-scattering frequencies and overestimate radar reflectivities, especially for those associated with larger ice particles. The differences between the statistics of KWAJEX simulation and available ground-based precipitation radar observations are relatively small at the levels below 5 km. Above 6 km, the differences increase with height and reach a maximum near 9 km. The simulated radar reflectivities are statistically 5–13 dBZ higher than those from radar observations at levels between 7 and 10.5 km, where graupel is the dominant simulated ice species. The largest graupel mixing ratios, as high as 8 g kg−1, are the most likely reason for the unrealistically high simulated radar reflectivity. Comparison of model-simulated graupel mixing ratio with available microphysics data from the Citation aircraft indicates that the model overestimates graupel content at the level the Citation flew (about 6.4 km).

Abstract:Previous work has shown that differential reflectivity (ZDR) observations from National Weather Service dual-polarization Doppler weather radars (WSR-88Ds) provide accurate estimates of convective boundary layer (CBL) depth when compared with depth estimates from 0000 UTC rawinsonde observations. We extend this work by launching small rawinsondes, called Windsonds, to study ZDR signals throughout the daytime hours. Results show that it can be difficult to identify CBL depth from ZDR alone when biological scatterers are absent. The exploration of other radar variables leads to the use of azimuthal ZDR variance to help in identifying CBL characteristics. A variable that combines both ZDR and azimuthal ZDR variance, called DVar, allows for improved signal identification using the quasi-vertical profile (QVP) method. Furthermore, QVP channel width is found to be closely tied to overall entrainment zone (EZ) structure. Results show that the centers and vertical extents of channels of reduced DVar in QVPs correlate well with sounding-observed CBL depth and EZ depth, respectively, across all stages of CBL development and in both clear and cloud-topped CBLs. The QVP approach tends to fail in identifying CBL and EZ depths when the vertical gradient in moisture above the CBL is small. Additionally, we compare observed EZ depth to various EZ parameterizations and show that the parameterizations generally underestimate EZ depth. We conclude that the ability of WSR-88Ds to sample the CBL should be leveraged to increase our knowledge of CBL properties.

Abstract:The impact of assimilating differential reflectivity ZDR in addition to reflectivity (ZH) and radial velocity (Vr) from a polarimetric radar on the analysis of a tornadic supercell storm using an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is studied in an observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) framework assuming a perfect forecast model. A double‐moment microphysics scheme is used to allow for proper simulation of polarimetric signatures. Root‐mean square errors of analyzed state variables are calculated and the structure and intensity of analyzed fields and derived quantities are examined. Compared to the baseline experiment assimilating radial velocity and reflectivity only, the assimilation of additional ZDR further reduces the errors of all state variables. The analyzed hydrometer fields are improved in both pattern and intensity distributions. Polarimetric signatures including ZDR and KDP columns, and ZDR arc in the supercell are much better reproduced.Sensitivity experiments are performed that exclude the updating of hydrometeor number concentrations by ZDR or of state variables not directly linked to ZDR via observation operators. The results show that if number concentrations are not updated together with the mixing radios, most of the benefit of assimilating ZDR is lost. Among other state variables, the updating of water vapor mixing ratio qv has the largest positive impact while the impact of updating vertical wind w comes in second. The updating of horizontal wind components or temperature has much smaller but still noticeable impact. Reliable flow‐dependent cross‐covariances among the state variables and observation prior as derived from the forecast ensemble and used in EnKF are clearly very beneficial.This article is protected by copyright. Intercomparison of vertical structure of storms revealed by ground-based (NMQ) and spaceborne radars (CloudSat-CPR and TRMM-PR)

Abstract:Spaceborne radars provide great opportunities to investigate the vertical structure of clouds and precipitation. Two typical spaceborne radars for such a study are the W-band Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) and Ku-band Precipitation Radar (PR), which are onboard NASA's CloudSat and TRMM satellites, respectively. Compared to S-band ground-based radars, they have distinct scattering characteristics for different hydrometeors in clouds and precipitation. The combination of spaceborne and ground-based radar observations can help in the identification of hydrometeors and improve the radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). This study analyzes the vertical structure of the 18 January, 2009 storm using data from the CloudSat CPR, TRMM PR, and a NEXRAD-based National Mosaic and Multisensor QPE (NMQ) system. Microphysics above, within, and below the melting layer are studied through an intercomparison of multifrequency measurements. Hydrometeors' type and their radar scattering characteristics are analyzed. Additionally, the study of the vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) reveals the brightband properties in the cold-season precipitation and its effect on the radar-based QPE. In all, the joint analysis of spaceborne and ground-based radar data increases the understanding of the vertical structure of storm systems and provides a good insight into the microphysical modeling for weather forecasts.
A multi-frequency spaceborne radar perspective of deep convection

Abstract:Global numerical weather models are starting to resolve atmospheric moist convection which comes with a critical need for observational constraints. One avenue for such constraints is spaceborne radar which tend to operate at three wavelengths, Ku-, Ka- and W-band. Many studies of deep convection in the past have primarily leveraged Ku-band because it is less affected by attenuation and multiple scattering. However, future spaceborne radar missions might not contain a Ku-band radar and thus considering the view of convection from Ka-band or W-band compared to the Ku-band would be useful. This study examines a coincident dataset between the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission and CloudSat as well as the entire GPM record to compare convective characteristics across various wavelengths within deep convection. We find that W-band reflectivity (Z) tends to maximize near the Ku-band defined echo-top while Ka-band often maximizes 4-5 km below. The height of the maximum Z above the melting level for W-band and Ka-band do not linearly relate to the Ku-band maximum. However, using the full GPM record the Ka-band 30 dBZ echo-tops can be linearly related to the Ku-band 40 dBZ echo-top with an $R^2$ of 0.62 and a root mean squared error of about 1 km. The spatial distribution of echo-tops from Ka-band corresponds well to the Ku-band echo-tops, highlighting regions of relatively large ice water path. This paper suggests that Ka-band only missions, like NASA's Investigation for Convective Updrafts, should be able to characterize global convection in a similar manner to a Ku-band system.

Temporal Associations Between Polarimetric Updraft Proxies and Signatures of Inflow and Hail in Supercells

Abstract:Recurring polarimetric radar signatures in supercells include deep and persistent differential reflectivity (ZDR) columns, hail inferred in low-level scans, and the ZDR arc signature. Prior investigations of supercell polarimetric signatures reveal positive correlations between the ZDR column depth and cross-sectional area and quantitative characteristics of the radar reflectivity field. This study expands upon prior work by examining temporal associations between supercell polarimetric radar signatures, incorporating a dataset of relatively discrete, right-moving supercells from the continental United States observed by the Weather Surveillance Radar 1988-Doppler (WSR-88D) network. Cross-correlation coefficients were calculated between the ZDR column area and depth and the base-scan hail area, ZDR arc area, and mean ZDR arc value. These correlation values were computed with a positive and negative lag time of up to 45 min. Results of the lag correlation analysis are consistent with prior observations indicative of storm cycling, including temporal associations between ZDR columns and inferred hail signatures/ZDR arcs in both tornadic and nontornadic supercells, but were most pronounced in tornadic storms.

Abstract:The differential reflectivity (ZDR) column is a notable polarimetric signature related to updrafts in deep moist convection. In this study, pseudo water vapor (qv) observations are retrieved from observed ZDR columns under the assumption that humidity is saturated within the convection where ZDR columns are detected, and are then assimilated within the 3DVar framework. The impacts of assimilating pseudo qv observations from ZDR columns on short-term severe weather prediction are first evaluated for a squall line case. Radar data analysis indicates that the ZDR columns are mainly located on the inflow side of the high-reflectivity region. Assimilation of the pseudo qv observations leads to an enhancement of qv within the convection, while concurrently reducing humidity in no-rain areas. Sensitivity experiments indicate that a tuned smaller observation error and a shorter horizontal decorrelation scale are optimal for a better assimilation of pseudo qv from ZDR columns, resulting in more stable rain rates during short-term forecasts. Additionally, a 15-minute cycling assimilation frequency yields the best performance, providing the most accurate reflectivity forecast in terms of both location and intensity. Analysis of thermodynamic fields reveal that assimilating ZDR columns provides more favorable initial conditions for sustaining convection, including sustainable moisture condition, a strong cold pool, and divergent winds near the surface, consequently enhancing reflectivity and precipitation. With the optimal configuration determined from the sensitivity tests, a quantitative evaluation further demonstrates that assimilating the pseudo qv observations from ZDR columns using the 3DVar method can improve the 0-3 hour reflectivity and accumulated precipitation predictions of convective storms.

Abstract:Abstract The analysis of diverse datasets from meteorological field campaigns often involves the use of separate 1D or combined 2D plots from various applications, making the determination of spatial and temporal relationships and correlations among these data, and the overall synthesis of information, extremely challenging. Presented here is a new 3D visualization tool, the Aircraft and Radar Data Collocation and Analysis in 3D (ARCA3D), that can combine data collected from different sources and at different scales, utilizing advanced visualization and user interface techniques, which allows for easier comparison and synthesis of such disparate data. The 3D tool is demonstrated with aircraft-based microphysical probe data and ground-based dual-polarization radar data all collected during the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean (RICO) field campaign. The 3D volumes of radar data can be interactively selected and quantitatively probed, while aircraft-measured variables can be viewed along the aircraft track plotted within the 3D radar volumes or plotted as time series within regions of interest relative to the radar echoes. The greatest benefits of the new software, the 3D viewing of large radar and aircraft datasets with user-driven controls, are difficult to communicate here in a static, 2D written medium, but the application of the tool toward a research problem is presented to elucidate the impacts of these benefits. The ARCA3D software is used to investigate the possible role of giant aerosol particles in the development of precipitation in trade wind cumuli. The temporal trends in the spatial location of the maximum differential reflectivity echoes within the clouds are examined with respect to the ambient giant aerosol number concentration and the measured cloud-base droplet number concentrations on 10 days. The results indicate that in trade wind cumuli of sufficient depth, giant aerosol may determine the original location of the earliest differential reflectivity maximum echo, and thus the first raindrops when present in higher number concentrations. However, when the giant aerosol are less plentiful, the number of cloud droplets activated above the cloud base may also play a role in determining the location of the earliest maximum differential reflectivity echo, and thus the earliest raindrops, in these trade wind cumuli.

Abstract:Microphysical processes in shallow Arctic precipitation clouds are illustrated using measurements of differential reflectivity Z(DR) from the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program polarimetric X-band radar deployed in Barrow, Alaska. X-band hemispheric range height indicator scans used in conjunction with Ka-band radar and lidar measurements revealed prolonged periods dominated by vapor depositional, riming, and/or aggregation growth. In each case, ice precipitation fell through at least one liquid-cloud layer in a seeder-feeder situation before reaching the surface. A long period of sustained low radar reflectivity Z(H) (Z) and high Z(DR) (6-7.5 dB) throughout the depth of the cloud and subcloud layer, coinciding with observations of large pristine dendrites at the surface, suggests vapor depositional growth of large dendrites at low number concentrations. In contrast, Z(DR) values decreased to 2-3 dB in the mean profile when surface precipitation was dominated by aggregates or rimed dendrites. Small but consistent differences in zenith Ka-band radar Doppler velocity and lidar depolarization measurements were found between aggregation- and riming-dominated periods. The clean Arctic environment can enhance Z(DR) signals relative to more complex midlatitude cases, producing higher values.
Aerosol characteristics and polarimetric signatures for a deep convective storm over the northwestern part of Europe – modeling and observations

Abstract:The Terrestrial Systems Modeling Platform (TSMP) was extended with a chemical transport model and polarimetric radar forward operator to enable detailed studies of aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions. The model was used at kilometer-scale (convection-permitting) resolution to simulate a deep convective storm event over Germany which produced large hail, high precipitation, and severe damaging winds. The ensemble model simulation was, in general, able to capture the storm structure, its evolution, and the spatial pattern of accumulated precipitation. However, the model was found to underestimate regions of high accumulated precipitation ( > 35 mm) and convective area fraction in the early period of the storm. While the model tends to simulate too high reflectivity in the downdraft region of the storm above the melting layer (mostly contributed by graupel), the model also simulates very weak polarimetric signatures in this region, when compared to the radar observations. The above findings remained almost unchanged when using a narrower cloud drop size distribution (CDSD) acknowledging the missing feedback between aerosol physical and chemical properties and CDSD shape parameters.

Abstract:Weather radars with dual-polarization capabilities enable the study of various characteristics of hydrometeors, including their size, shape, and orientation. Radar polarimetric measurements, coupled with Doppler information, allow for analysis in the spectral domain. This analysis can be leveraged to reveal valuable insight into the microphysics and kinematics of hydrometeors in precipitation systems. This paper uses spectral polarimetry to investigate precipitation microphysics and kinematics in storm environments observed during the RELAMPAGO field experiment in Argentina. This study uses range height indicator (RHI) scan measurements from a C-Band polarimetric Doppler weather radar deployed during the field campaign. In this work, the impact of storm dynamics on hydrometeors is studied, including the size sorting of hydrometeors due to vertical wind shear. In addition, particle microphysical processes because of aggregation and growth of ice crystals in anvil clouds, as well as graupel formation resulting from the riming of ice crystals and dendrites are also analyzed here. The presence of different particle size distributions because of the mixing of hydrometeors in a sheared environment and resulting size sorting has been reported using spectral differential reflectivity (sZdr) slope. Spectral reflectivity (sZh) and sZdr have also been used to understand the signature of ice crystal aggregation in an anvil cloud. The regions of pristine ice crystals are identified from vertical profiles of spectral polarimetric variables in anvil cloud because of sZh < 0 dB and sZdr values around 2 dB. It is also found that the growth process of these ice crystals causes a skewed bimodal sZh spectrum due to the presence of both pristine ice crystals and dry snow. Next, graupel formation due to riming has been studied and it is found that the riming process produces sZh values of about 10 dB and corresponding sZdr values of 1 dB. This positive sZdr indicates the presence of needle/columnar secondary ice particles formed by ice multiplication processes in the riming zones. Lastly, the temporal evolution of a storm is investigated by analyzing changes in hydrometeor types with time and their influence on the spectral polarimetric variables.

An Automated Approach to Estimating Convective Boundary Layer Depth From Dual-Polarization WSR-88D Radar Observations

Abstract:Convective boundary layer (CBL) depth can be estimated from dual-polarization WSR-88D radars using the product differential reflectivity (ZDR), because the CBL top is co-located with a local ZDR minimum produced by Bragg scatter at the interface of the CBL and the free troposphere. Quasi-vertical profiles (QVPs) of ZDR are produced for each radar volume scan and profiles from successive times are stitched together to form a time-height plot of ZDR from sunrise to sunset. QVPs of ZDR often show a low-ZDR channel that starts near the ground and rises during the morning and early afternoon, identifying the CBL top. Unfortunately, results show that this channel within the QVP can occasionally be misleading. This motivated creation of a new variable: DVar, which combines ZDR with its azimuthal variance and is particularly helpful at identifying the CBL top during the morning hours. Two methods are developed to track the CBL top from QVPs of ZDR and DVar. Although each method has strengths and weaknesses, the best results are found when the two methods are combined using inverse variance weighting. The ability to detect CBL depth from routine WSR-88D radar scans rather than from rawinsondes or lidar instruments would vastly improve our understanding of CBL depth variations in the daytime by increasing the temporal and spatial frequency of the observations.

Abstract:Abstract This study derives polarimetric radar vertical profiles and microphysical retrievals for 25 Synoptic Snow (SS) and 23 Lake Effect Snow (LES) cases using the Range‐Defined Quasi‐Vertical Profiles (RD‐QVP), Columnar Vertical Profiles (CVP), and Process‐oriented Vertical Profiles (POVP) methods. For all vertical profile techniques, SS cases exhibit a near‐linear increase in reflectivity from −30 to 0°C whereas Z DR and K dp locally peak in the dendritic growth layer. LES cases universally exhibit negative Z DR , rather high Z , negligible K dp , and near‐unity ρ hv . Ground measurements from the past OWLeS campaign provide direct evidence that conical graupel may strongly affect these polarimetric measurements in LES bands. Aggregation efficiencies for SS cases are estimated by optimizing the theoretical number concentration ( N t ) and mean volume diameter ( D m ) steady‐state vertical profiles against radar‐retrieved profiles derived from 20 of the 25 synoptic storm RD‐QVPs. The median estimated aggregation efficiency is approximately 0.15 with a relatively narrow interquartile range that spans from 0.1 to just over 0.2. Values of optimized aggregation efficiencies are nearly independent of the assumed gamma distribution shape parameter. These results are used to derive temperature‐dependent, climatological steady‐state relations for vertical profiles of N t , D m , and liquid‐equivalent snowfall rates. These results can be used in numerical weather prediction model aggregation parameterizations and can also provide climatologically representative vertical profiles of radar and microphysical quantities.

Abstract:An intercomparison study of a midlatitude mesoscale squall line is performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model at 1 km horizontal grid spacing with eight different cloud microphysics schemes to investigate processes that contribute to the large variability in simulated cloud and precipitation properties. All simulations tend to produce a wider area of high radar reflectivity (Z(e) > 45 dBZ) than observed but a much narrower stratiform area. The magnitude of the virtual potential temperature drop associated with the gust front passage is similar in simulations and observations, while the pressure rise and peak wind speed are smaller than observed, possibly suggesting that simulated cold pools are shallower than observed. Most of the microphysics schemes overestimate vertical velocity and Z(e) in convective updrafts as compared with observational retrievals. Simulated precipitation rates and updraft velocities have significant variability across the eight schemes, even in this strongly dynamically driven system. Differences in simulated updraft velocity correlate well with differences in simulated buoyancy and low-level vertical perturbation pressure gradient, which appears related to cold pool intensity that is controlled by the evaporation rate. Simulations with stronger updrafts have a more optimal convective state, with stronger cold pools, ambient low-level vertical wind shear, and rear-inflow jets. Updraft velocity variability between schemes is mainly controlled by differences in simulated ice-related processes, which impact the overall latent heating rate, whereas surface rainfall variability increases in no-ice simulations mainly because of scheme differences in collision-coalescence parameterizations.
An evaluation of microphysics in a numerical model using Doppler velocity measured by ground-based radar for application to the EarthCARE satellite

Abstract:The Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) of the Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) has a new capability to observe the Doppler velocity related to the vertical air motion of the terminal velocity of hydrometeors. The new observation from space will be used to evaluate and improve the model. Before the launch of EarthCARE, we need to develop a methodology for using the CPR data for model evaluations. In this study, we evaluated simulated data by a stretched version of the global non-hydrostatic model over Japan with a ground-based CPR using an instrument design similar to the EarthCARE CPR. We chose two cases with different precipitation events in September 2019 using two cloud microphysics schemes. We introduced the categorization method for evaluating microphysics using Doppler velocity. The results show that the liquid and solid phases of hydrometeors are divided in Doppler velocity, and the model's terminal velocities of rain, snow, and graupel categories can be evaluated with the observation. The results also show that the choice of microphysics scheme has a more significant impact than the dependence on precipitation cases. We discussed the application of the EarthCARE-like simulation results using a satellite simulator.

Evaluation and Modification of Microphysics Schemes on the Cold Pool Evolution for a Simulated Bow Echo in Southeast China

Abstract:A merger-formation bow echo (MFBE) in southeast China during the pre-summer rainy season (PSRS) was simulated using three microphysics schemes including Thompson (THOM), Morrison (MORR), and Weather Research and Forecasting Double-Moment 6-Class (WDM6) schemes to compare against polarimetric observations and Variational Doppler Radar Analysis System (VDRAS) analyses. The three schemes captured the basic kinematic structures for this MFBE event after assimilating radar radial velocities, but all underpredicted the cold pool strength by similar to 25%. Particularly, THOM produced the best raindrop size distributions (DSDs) and precipitation pattern compared with observed retrievals; further analyses indicated the larger raindrop size bias and the weak cold pool strength in THOM were owing to the relatively low rain breakup efficiency and inefficient rain evaporation, respectively. By decreasing the cutoff diameter of rain breakup parameterization from the default 1.6-1.2 mm (i.e., increasing breakup efficiency) and increasing evaporation efficiency by threefold in THOM, the simulated DSDs and precipitation were greatly improved, and the cold pool strength was significantly increased from 77% to 99% compared to that in VDRAS analyses. This study illustrated a plausible approach of combining polarimetric radar retrievals and VDRAS analyses as bases to adjust THOM default settings in simulating a MFBE event in southeast China with physical characteristics more consistent with observations. Since microphysical processes vary from convective organizations and climate regions, it is recognized more cases studies are needed in the future to examine the validity and approach in this study to improve simulations and predictions of MFBEs in southeast China.

Abstract:NASA's Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) field campaign gathered data using "satellite-simulating" (albeit with higher-resolution data than satellites currently provide) and in situ aircraft to study snow storms, with an emphasis on banding. This study used three IMPACTS microwave instruments, two passive and one active, chosen for their sensitivity to precipitation microphysics. The 10-GHz through 37-GHz passive frequencies were well suited for detecting light precipitation and differentiating rain intensities over water. The 85-GHz through 183-GHz frequencies were more sensitive to cloud ice, with higher cloud tops manifesting as lower brightness temperatures, but this did not necessarily correspond well to near-surface precipitation. Over land, retrieving precipitation information from radiometer data is more difficult, requiring increased reliance on radar to assess storm structure. A dual-frequency ratio (DFR) derived from the radar's Ku- and Ka-band frequencies provided greater insight into storm microphysics than reflectivity alone. Areas likely to contain mixed-phase precipitation (often the melting layer/bright band) generally had the highest DFR, and high-altitude regions likely to contain ice usually had the lowest DFR. The DFR of rain columns increased toward the ground, and snow bands appeared as high-DFR anomalies.

Abstract:This study explores the benefits of assimilating infrared (IR) brightness temperature (BT) observations from geostationary satellites jointly with radial velocity (Vr) and reflectivity (Z) observations from Doppler weather radars within an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) data assimilation system to the convection-allowing ensemble analysis and prediction of a tornadic supercell thunderstorm event on 12 June 2017 across Wyoming and Nebraska. While radar observations sample the three-dimensional storm structures with high fidelity, BT observations provide information about clouds prior to the formation of precipitation particles when in-storm radar observations are not yet available and also provide information on the environment outside the thunderstorms. To better understand the strengths and limitations of each observation type, the satellite and Doppler radar observations are assimilated separately and jointly, and the ensemble analyses and forecasts are compared with available observations. Results show that assimilating BT observations has the potential to increase the forecast and warning lead times of severe weather events compared with radar observations and may also potentially complement the sparse surface observations in some regions as revealed by the probabilistic prediction of mesocyclone tracks initialized from EnKF analyses as various times. Additionally, the assimilation of both BT and Vr observations yields the best ensemble forecasts, providing higher confidence, improved accuracy, and longer lead times on the probabilistic prediction of mid-level mesocyclones.
