Abstract:We first reconsider the mathematical background of superqubit theory and describe important peculiarities of superspaces and supermatrices which are usually out of attention. Then we study states in super Hilbert spaces using super-bra/super-ket formalism in details. The qubit (qudit) and superqubit (superqudit) are defined as linear spans in the corresponding Hilbert subspaces. A new kind of superqubit carring the odd parity is introduced. The multi-superqubit states are studied, and the superconcurrence which distinguishes separable states is proposed.

Abstract:It was known long ago that quantum theory and general relativity, two pillars of modern physics, are in sharp conflict in their foundations. Their fundamental inconsistencies render a consistent theory of quantum gravity the most challenging problem in physics. Here we propose an informationcomplete quantum field theory (ICQFT), which describes elementary fermions, their gauge fields, and gravity (together, called the trinary fields) as an elementary trinity without any conceptual inconsistency of existing theories. We then argue that the ICQFT provides a coherent picture and conceptual framework of unifying matter and spacetime (gravity) as information via spacetimematter entanglement and gives a compelling solution to the problem of time and time’s arrow. The trinary fields are characterized by dual entanglement and dual dynamics. Spacetime-matter entanglement encodes complete physical predictions of the theory and allows us to give a quantum information definition of dark energy. We consider two particular forms of spacetime-matter entangled states and their physical consequences. One of them is consistent with the variational holographic relation and another results in an universal relation between entanglement entropy and geometry (area and volume). This latter relation allows us to determine the cosmological constant term in the classical Einstein equation and implies that our Universe is not strictly holographic due to dark energy (related to an universal negative pressure). We predict the interior quantum state of a Schwarzschild black hole to be maximally information-complete. As a concrete quantum formulation of gravity coupled with matter, the ICQFT is about quantum information dynamics for spacetime and matter and eliminates the conceptual obstacles of existing quantum gravity theory.

Abstract:We introduce superdensity operators as a tool for analyzing quantum information in spacetime. Superdensity operators encode spacetime correlation functions in an operator framework, and support a natural generalization of Hilbert space techniques and Dirac's transformation theory as traditionally applied to standard density operators. Superdensity operators can be measured experimentally, but accessing their full content requires novel procedures. We demonstrate these statements on several examples. The superdensity formalism suggests useful definitions of spacetime entropies and spacetime quantum channels. For example, we show that the von Neumann entropy of a superdensity operator is related to a quantum generalization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and compute this for a many-body system. We also suggest experimental protocols for measuring spacetime entropies.

Abstract:To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05951">arXiv:1602.05951</a>] and Chapter 6 of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05569" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05569">arXiv:1602.05569</a>]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

Abstract:We give a pedagogical review of how concepts from quantum information theory build up the gravitational side of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. The review is self-contained in that it only presupposes knowledge of quantum mechanics and general relativity; other tools-including holographic duality itself-are introduced in the text. We have aimed to give researchers interested in entering this field a working knowledge sufficient for initiating original projects. The review begins with the laws of black hole thermodynamics, which form the basis of this subject, then introduces the Ryu-Takayanagi proposal, the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh (JLMS) relation, and subregion duality. We discuss tensor networks as a visualization tool and analyze various network architectures in detail. Next, several modern concepts and techniques are discussed: Rényi entropies and the replica trick, differential entropy and kinematic space, modular Berry phases, modular minimal entropy, entanglement wedge cross-sections, bit threads, and others. We discuss the extent to which bulk geometries are fixed by boundary entanglement entropies, and analyze the relations such as the monogamy of mutual information, which boundary entanglement entropies must obey if a state has a semiclassical bulk dual. We close with a discussion of black holes, including holographic complexity, firewalls and the black hole information paradox, islands, and replica wormholes.

Abstract:We will highlight that despite there being various approaches to quantum gravity, there are universal approach-independent features of quantum gravity. The geometry of spacetime becomes an emergent structure, which emerges from some purely quantum gravitational degrees of freedom. We argue that these quantum gravitational degrees of freedom can be best understood using quantum information theory. Various approaches to quantum gravity seem to suggest that quantum gravity could be a third quantized theory, and such a theory would not be defined in spacetime, but rather in an abstract configuration space of fields. This supports the view that spacetime geometry is not fundamental, thus effectively ending the spacetime description of nature.

Quantum Mutual Information in Time

Abstract:While the quantum mutual information is a fundamental measure of quantum information, it is only defined for spacelike-separated quantum systems. Such a limitation is not present in the theory of classical information, where the mutual information between two random variables is well-defined irrespective of whether or not the variables are separated in space or separated in time. Motivated by this disparity between the classical and quantum mutual information, we employ the pseudo-density matrix formalism to define a simple extension of quantum mutual information into the time domain. As in the spatial case, we show that such a notion of quantum mutual information in time serves as a natural measure of correlation between timelike-separated systems, while also highlighting ways in which quantum correlations distinguish between space and time. We also show how such quantum mutual information is time-symmetric with respect to quantum Bayesian inversion, and then we conclude by showing how mutual information in time yields a Holevo bound for the amount of classical information that may be extracted from sequential measurements on an ensemble of quantum states.

Abstract:The theory of quantum gravity is aimed to fuse general relativity with quantum theory into a more fundamental framework. The space of quantum gravity provides both the nonfixed causality of general relativity and the quantum uncertainty of quantum mechanics. In a quantum gravity scenario, the causal structure is indefinite, and the processes are causally nonseparable. Here, we provide a model for the information processing structure of quantum gravity. We show that the quantum gravity environment is an information resource pool from which valuable information can be extracted. We analyze the structure of the quantum gravity space and the entanglement of the space‐time geometry. We study the information transfer capabilities of quantum gravity space and define the quantum gravity channel. We reveal that the quantum gravity space acts as a background noise on the local environment states. We characterize the properties of the noise of the quantum gravity space and show that it allows the separate local parties to simulate remote outputs from the local environment state, through the process of remote simulation.

Abstract:We summarize our work on spherically symmetric midi-superspaces in loop quantum gravity. Our approach is based on using inhomogeneous slicings that may penetrate the horizon in case there is one and on a redefinition of the constraints so the Hamiltonian has an Abelian algebra with itself. We discuss basic and improved quantizations as is done in loop quantum cosmology. We discuss the use of parameterized Dirac observables to define operators associated with kinematical variables in the physical space of states, as a first step to introduce an operator associated with the space-time metric. We analyze the elimination of singularities and how they are replaced by extensions of the space-times. We discuss the charged case and potential observational consequences in quasinormal modes. We also analyze the covariance of the approach. Finally, we comment on other recent approaches of quantum black holes, including mini-superspaces motivated by loop quantum gravity.

Geometry-Information Duality: Quantum Entanglement Contributions to Gravitational Dynamics

Abstract:We propose a fundamental duality between the geometric properties of spacetime and the informational content of quantum fields. Specifically, we establish that the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the entanglement entropy of quantum states, with geometric invariants mapping to informational measures. This framework modifies Einstein's field equations by introducing an informational stress-energy tensor derived from quantum entanglement entropy. Our findings have implications for black hole thermodynamics, cosmology, and quantum gravity, suggesting that quantum information fundamentally shapes the structure of spacetime. We incorporate this informational stress-energy tensor into Einstein's field equations, leading to modified spacetime geometry, particularly in regimes of strong gravitational fields, such as near black holes. We compute corrections to Newton's constant (G) due to entanglement entropy contributions from various quantum fields and explore the consequences for black hole thermodynamics and cosmology. These corrections include explicit dependence on fundamental constants (h-bar, c, and k_B), ensuring dimensional consistency in our calculations. Our results indicate that quantum information plays a crucial role in gravitational dynamics, providing new insights into the nature of spacetime and potential solutions to long-standing challenges in quantum gravity.

Abstract:The central question in this article is how information does leak out from black holes. Relying on algebraic arguments and the concept of superselection sectors, we propose the existence of certain operators whose correlations extend across the black hole atmosphere and range into the interior. Contained in the full algebra, these black hole intertwiners will not belong to the subalgebra describing semiclassical bulk physics. We study this proposal in the context of operator reconstructions for code spaces containing a large number of microstates. As long as the atmosphere is excluded from a particular subsystem, the global state seen under the action of the associated algebra is maximally mixed and therefore described by a single classical background. Once the relevant correlations are encoded, i.e. if the algebra is sufficiently enlarged, perfect state distinguishability becomes possible. We arrive at this by computing the von Neumann entropy which may explain the result obtained by applying the quantum extremal surface prescription to the mixed state. We then examine these insights in the context of black hole evaporation and argue that information is transferred to the radiation via black hole intertwiners. We derive the Page curve. The mechanism above suggests that black hole information is topologically protected. An infalling observer would experience no drama. This may resolve the unitarity problem without running into any firewall or state puzzle, the latter being evident in generalized entropy computations. We also examine the question of how certain wormhole topologies may be understood given these findings. We argue that their occurrence in gravity replica computations may be related to the maximal correlation between radiation and atmosphere surrounding the old black hole. This may suggest a connection between topology change and near horizon quantum gravitational effects.

Quantum Entanglement without nonlocal causation in (3,2)-dimensional spacetime

Abstract:This work aims at exploring whether the nonlocal correlations due to quantum entanglement could exist without nonlocal causation. This is done with the aid of a toy model to investigate whether the ability of two quantum entangled particles to "correlate" their behaviors even at very large distances and in the absence of any physical connection can be seen as due to an exchange of information through an extra-temporal dimension. Since superluminal information exchange is forbidden in our (3,1) spacetime, an extra-temporal dimension is needed to recover the physical picture of finite velocity information exchange between entangled entities. Assuming that the geometry of space-time of dimension (3,2) is described by a metric containing a warping factor, the confinement of the massive particles in the extra time dimension follows. Therefore, why we do not experience an infinitely large extra time dimension can be explained. The toy model proposed here is defined by borrowing Bohm-Bub's proposal to describe the wavefunction collapse using nonlinear (non-unitary) dynamical equations and then elaborating this approach for an entangled system. The model so obtained is just speculative without any claim of being robust against any criticism, nevertheless, it satisfies the purpose of giving the possibility to the hypotheses formulated above to be verified experimentally; in fact, it proposes an experiment potentially interesting which would otherwise be immediately dismissed as manifestly trivial. The proposed experiment would consist of checking the possible violation of Bell's inequality between two identical but independent systems under appropriate conditions. Beyond its theoretical interest, entanglement is a key topic in quantum computing and quantum technologies, so any attempt to gain a deeper understanding of it could be useful.

Unitarity and Information in Quantum Gravity: A Simple Example

Abstract:In approaches to quantum gravity, where smooth spacetime is an emergent approximation of a discrete Planckian fundamental structure, any effective smooth field theoretical description would miss part of the fundamental degrees of freedom and thus break unitarity. This is applicable also to trivial gravitational field (low energy) idealizations realized by the use of Minkowski background geometry which, as with any other spacetime geometry, corresponds, in the fundamental description, to infinitely many different and closely degenerate discrete microstates. The existence of such microstates provides a large reservoir q-bit for information to be coded at the end of black hole evaporation and thus opens the way to a natural resolution of the black hole evaporation information puzzle. In this paper we show that these expectations can be made precise in a simple quantum gravity model for cosmology motivated by loop quantum gravity. Concretely, even when the model is fundamentally unitary, when microscopic degrees of freedom irrelevant to low-energy cosmological observers are suitably ignored, pure states in the effective description evolve into mixed states due to decoherence with the Planckian microscopic structure. Moreover, in the relevant physical regime these hidden degrees of freedom do not carry any “energy” and thus realize, in a fully quantum gravitational context, the idea (emphasized before by Unruh and Wald) that decoherence can take place without dissipation, now in a concrete gravitational model strongly motivated by quantum gravity. All this strengthens the perspective of a quite conservative and natural resolution of the black hole evaporation puzzle where information is not destroyed but simply degraded (made unavailable to low-energy observers) into correlations with the microscopic structure of the quantum geometry at the Planck scale.
Spacetime Quantum Mechanics and the Quantum Mechanics of Spacetime

Abstract:These are the author's lectures at the 1992 Les Houches Summer School, "Gravitation and Quantizations". They develop a generalized sum-over-histories quantum mechanics for quantum cosmology that does not require either a preferred notion of time or a definition of measurement. The "post-Everett" quantum mechanics of closed systems is reviewed. Generalized quantum theories are defined by three elements (1) the set of fine-grained histories of the closed system which are its most refined possible description, (2) the allowed coarse grainings which are partitions of the fine-grained histories into classes, and (3) a decoherence functional which measures interference between coarse grained histories. Probabilities are assigned to sets of alternative coarse-grained histories that decohere as a consequence of the closed system's dynamics and initial condition. Generalized sum-over histories quantum theories are constructed for non-relativistic quantum mechanics, abelian gauge theories, a single relativistic world line, and for general relativity. For relativity the fine-grained histories are four-metrics and matter fields. Coarse grainings are four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant partitions of these. The decoherence function is expressed in sum-over-histories form. The quantum mechanics of spacetime is thus expressed in fully spacetime form. The coarse-grainings are most general notion of alternative for quantum theory expressible in spacetime terms. Hamiltonian quantum mechanics of matter fields with its notion of unitarily evolving state on a spacelike surface is recovered as an approximation to this generalized quantum mechanics appropriate for those initial conditions and coarse-grainings such that spacetime geometry
