Abstract:In this work, we have estimated self diffusion coefficients along with the binary diffusion coefficients of mixtures of alkane (methane, ethane, propane and n-butane) in SPC/E water(H$_2$O). Molecular dynamics study of a binary mixture of alkane gas and SPC/E water, with alkane as solute and water as solvent, have been carried out at different temperatures ranging from 283.15 K to 333.15 K. We have taken a dilute solution of 3 alkane (methane, ethane, propane and n-butane) molecules and 971 water molecules in a system. The role of interaction in the structure of the constituents of the system as a function of temperature is studied with the help of the radial distribution function (RDF) and the coordination numbers. The self-diffusion coefficient of the constituents of the mixture was calculated by using mean square displacement (MSD) and the binary diffusion coefficients of alkane in water have been calculated by using Darken's relation. The results are then compared with the available experimental values. The values of self-diffusion coefficients of water from the present work come in good agreement with the experimental values within 9% error. The binary diffusion coefficients of ethane, methane, propane and n-butane agree with the previously reported experimental values. The dependence of the diffusion coefficients on temperature is approximated by Arrhenius-type exponential relationship.

Abstract:Diffusivities of equal proportion liquid mixture is studied by computer simulation confined in silicate pore. The diffusivities of liquid argon and krypton in the macrovolumen systems have been calculated by equilibrium molecular dynamic (EMD) simulations in order to prove the program's validity. Additionally, the diffusivities of argon and krypton binary mixture confined in slit porous silicate have been computed by EMD simulation at different reduced densities and distances between two walls at room temperature ( T = 298 K). According to the simulation data, five experiential models are presented. The models can predict the diffusivities of argon and krypton binary mixture and be used in industry.

Abstract:Quantum molecular dynamics simulations for self-diffusion, mutual-diffusion, and viscosities of hydrogen-helium (H-He) mixtures are investigated to benchmark the standard theoretical models in the warm dense matter regime. We carefully examine the differences in velocity autocorrelation functions (VACFs) between the mixtures and pure hydrogen or helium. The VACFs for the mixtures exhibit oscillatory features, which however are absent for pure species. At low temperatures, the VACFs of H in H-He mixtures have a negative correlation region, which results in an obviously smaller self-diffusion of H in H-He mixtures compared to that in a pure H system. The calculated self-diffusion coefficients of H and He in H-He mixtures show much different behaviors with the variation of the composition of He (XHe): the self-diffusion coefficients of He increase monotonously with increasing XHe, whereas the self-diffusion coefficients of H generally decrease with the increase in XHe. The viscosities are smaller for the H-He mixtures with a more helium content. These diffusion and viscosity coefficients are used as a benchmark to check some analytical models based on the one component plasma or the Yukawa one component plasma.

Abstract:Mixtures of hydrogen (H 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) are given in many technical applications where accurate thermophysical property data are required for the design and optimization of corresponding processes. This work evaluates the accessibility of the thermal diffusivity a and the Fick diffusion coefficient D 11 in gaseous binary mixtures of H 2 and CH 4 by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The investigations are performed at temperatures T and pressures p of (293, 333, 363, and 393) K and (5, 10, and 15) MPa with varying CH 4 mole fractions of (0.05, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.8). For all thermodynamic states investigated, only one hydrodynamic mode was observable by DLS. The assignment of the single related diffusivity to either a , D 11 , or a mixed diffusivity D mix representing both a and D 11 is performed by considering D 11 calculated by the Chapman–Enskog kinetic theory, experimental D 11 literature data, a predicted by using two different approaches, and calculations of the so-called Rayleigh ratio. The findings indicate that DLS gives access to a at high , D 11 at low , and D mix at ≈ 0.3. All data are summarized in the form of correlations providing a and D 11 as a function of T , p , and .

Abstract:A review of transferable models for calculating Fick diffusivities D 11 in binary mixtures consisting of a liquid solvent with a dissolved gas close to the limit of infinite dilution of the gas is presented. The literature review has shown that, while a number of models to predict D 11 in binary mixtures exist, they either incorporate substance-specific parameters that are not available for arbitrary mixtures or are applicable only to a limited field of fluid classes, such as linear alkanes or primary alcohols. On the basis of these observations and the fact that a large amount of experimental D 11 data were published in recent years, a new simple and transferable model for calculating Fick diffusivities D 11 in binary mixtures consisting of a liquid solvent with a dissolved gas close to the limit of infinite dilution of the gas was developed. The model was developed and trained with the help of 451 data points for binary mixtures of a liquid with dissolved gas. The solvents include linear, branched, and cyclic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, ethers, and ionic liquids. The solutes include 11 gases with a wide range of molar mass and polarity. Overall, the model is able to reproduce D 11 of the training set covering a range over more than 2 orders of magnitude with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 19%. With the help of a testing set, including 314 D 11 values that were not included in the training, the predictive capabilities of the model were tested for diverse systems. Although their values extend over 7 orders of magnitude, an AARD of 24% of the prediction from experimental D 11 data of the testing set and, thus, excellent agreement was found. The model is further highlighted by the fact that the testing set includes liquid and gaseous mixtures as well as mixtures in the supercritical state.

Abstract:Diffusion coefficients at infinite dilution are important basic data for all processes involving mass transfer. They can be obtained from studying samplesin equilibrium using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with pulsed field gradients (PFG-NMR), a technique which is widely used in chemistry but isonly rarely applied in engineering studies. This advantageous technique was employed here to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of diluted solutions ofcarbon dioxide and methane in the pure solvents water, ethanol, cyclohexane, toluene, methanol, and acetone at 298.15 K. For the systems (carbon dioxide +water) and (carbon dioxide + ethanol), measurements were also carried out at 308.15 K, 318.15 K and 333.15 K. Except for (methane + water) and (methane +toluene), no literature data for the methane-containing systems were previously available. At the studied solute concentrations, there is practically no differencebetween the self-diffusion coefficient and the mutual diffusion coefficient. The experimental results are compared to experimental literature data as well as toresults from semi-empirical methods for the prediction of diffusion coefficients at infinite dilution. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations were carried outfor all systems to determine the diffusion coefficient at infinite dilution based on force fields that were taken from the literature, and the results are compared tothe experimental data and those from the classical prediction methods.

Abstract:Mutual diffusion of six hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, isobutane, benzene, toluene or naphthalene) diluted in supercritical carbon dioxide ( ) is studied by molecular dynamics simulation near the Widom line, i.e., in the temperature range from 290 to 345 K along the isobar 9 MPa. The + aromatics mixtures are additionally sampled at 10 and 12 MPa and an experimental database with Fick diffusion coefficient data for those systems is provided. Taylor dispersion experiments of with benzene, toluene, n-dodecane and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene are conducted along the 10 MPa isobar. Maxwell–Stefan and Fick diffusion coefficients are analyzed, together with the thermodynamic factor that relates them. It is found that the peculiar behavior of the Fick diffusion coefficient of some mixtures in the extended critical region is a consequence of the thermodynamic factor minimum due to pronounced clustering on the molecular scale. Further, the strong dependence of the Fick diffusion coefficient on the molecular mass of the solute as well as the breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation near the Widom line are confirmed. Eleven correlations for the prediction of the Fick diffusion coefficient of mixtures are assessed. An alternative two-step approach for the prediction of the infinite dilution Fick diffusion coefficient of supercritical mixtures is proposed. It requires only the state point in terms of temperature and pressure (or density) as well as the molecular solute mass as input parameters. First, entropy scaling is applied to estimate the self-diffusion coefficient of . Subsequently, this coefficient is used to determine the infinite dilution Fick diffusion coefficient of the mixture, based on the finding that these two diffusion coefficients exhibit a linear relationship, where the slope depends only on the molecular solute mass.

Abstract:The thermophysical properties of systems with alkanes with dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) are of importance in the aspects of carbon capture and storage (CCS), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, et al. This work continues for our previous studies about the thermophysical properties of several binary systems with alkane and CO2. In this work, the liquid viscosity, interfacial tension, thermal and mutual diffusivity of normal eicosane n-C20H42 with dissolved CO2 were measured with dynamic light scattering (DLS) method from (323 to 473) K and (0.1 to 5.6) MPa. The system's liquid viscosity and interfacial tension were analyzed as a function of pressure under each isotherm line. The polynomial-based empirical correlations were developed for liquid viscosity and interfacial tension with pressure and temperature. The maximum deviations were 4.4 % for liquid viscosity and 1.1 mN·m−1 for interfacial tension. The experimental interfacial tension from the literature was compared with this work, and the deviations were mostly with 0.50 mN·m−1. The mutual diffusivity of the system was nearly a constant along the investigated composition range in this work. The mass diffusion coefficients from the literature agree with this work. The results from this work were expected to provide reliable and accurate fundamental thermophysical properties of liquid with dissolved gas systems in engineering and chemical processes.

Abstract:In physical foaming processes of thermoplastics, a liquid mixture consisting of a molten polymer with a dissolved blowing agent is extruded through a die or injected into a mold. The morphology of the foam matrix strongly depends on the mutual diffusion coefficient D 11 of the liquid polymer-blowing agent mixture. For a better understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms during the foaming process and the development of corresponding models, accurate knowledge of D 11 is needed. This work reports on the simultaneous measurement of D 11 and the thermal diffusivity a of liquid mixtures consisting of polystyrene melts with dissolved nitrogen (N 2 ) or carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) at mass fractions w solute up to 0.003 or 0.02 and temperatures T between (433 and 533) K using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The determined D 11 range is between (1 and 4) × 10 9 m 2 ⋅s −1 and are slightly larger for the mixtures containing N 2 at a given T and w solute . D 11 could be determined with an average expanded relative uncertainty of 18%. Considering all investigated state points and the achieved experimental uncertainties, both D 11 and a are independent on the amount of dissolved gas, despite relatively large mole fractions of the dissolved blowing agents x solute of 0.997 and 0.93.

Abstract:Conventional periodontal regeneration methods remain insufficient to attain complete and reliable clinical regeneration of periodontal tissues. We have developed a new method of cell transplantation using cell sheet engineering and have applied it to this problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cell sheets retrieved from culture on unique temperature-responsive culture dishes, and to examine whether these cell sheets can regenerate periodontal tissues. The HPDL cell sheets were examined histologically and biochemically, and also were transplanted into a mesial dehiscence model in athymic rats. HPDL cells were harvested from culture dishes as a contiguous cell sheet with abundant extracellular matrix and retained intact integrins that are susceptible to trypsin-EDTA treatment. In the animal study, periodontal ligament-like tissues that include an acellular cementum-like layer and fibrils anchoring into this layer were identified in all the athymic rats transplanted with HPDL cell sheets. This fibril anchoring highly resembles native periodontal ligament fibers; such regeneration was not observed in nontransplanted controls. These results suggest that this technique, based on the concept of cell sheet engineering, can be useful for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Abstract:In the present study, the self-diffusion coefficient and viscosity of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the superheated vapor, gaseous, and supercritical state. The parameters used for the MD simulations are based on new molecular force fields (FFs), which were derived from previously developed, highly accurate pair potentials based on ab initio-calculated interaction energies in the limit of zero density. Using these optimized rigid all-atom FFs, multiple MD simulation runs in the order of several μs were performed to evaluate the dynamic viscosity from the plateau of the time integral of the pressure autocorrelation function and the self-diffusion coefficient from the linear Einstein regime. For the latter property, it is shown that the Yeh-Hummer correction accounting for effects of the finite box size for dense liquid systems in the hydrodynamic regime can be transferred consistently to gaseous systems at various densities. A comparison of the simulated dynamical properties obtained from our ab initio-derived FFs with those obtained from established literature FFs showed that our suggested approach is superior to the other rigid all-atom approaches and in particular to flexible and united-atom models over density ranges corresponding to pressures between 0.1 and 10 MPa. For temperatures of 295, 325, and 355 K, our simulation results for the product of self-diffusion coefficient and density as well as for the dynamic viscosity with average expanded statistical uncertainties (k = 2) of 0.6% as well as 8.0%, respectively, represent the density dependency of both properties and agree with the few simulation and experimental data available in the literature.

Abstract:The results of viscosity measurements at moderate densities on the two gaseous mixtures carbon dioxide–nitrogen and ethane–methane including the pure gases between 253.15 K and 473.15 K, originally performed by Humberg et al. at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, using a rotating-cylinder viscometer between 0.1 MPa and 2.0 MPa, were employed to determine the interaction viscosity, , and the product of molar density and diffusion coefficient, , each in the limit of zero density. The isothermal viscosity data were evaluated by those authors with density series restricted to the second order at most to derive the zero-density viscosities and initial density viscosity coefficients, and , for the mixtures, as well as, and ( ), respectively, for the pure gases. Humberg et al. have already compared their and data for carbon dioxide–nitrogen and ethane–methane with corresponding viscosity values theoretically computed for the nonspherical potentials of the intermolecular interaction. Now we employed and as well as and in two procedures to derive values. For this, we needed values (ratio between effective cross-sections of viscosity and diffusion). But the second procedure applying the initial density viscosity coefficients and failed to yield reasonable values. The first procedure should provide the best results when it is possible to use values computed for the nonspherical potential. The effect is comparatively small if is determined. But if is calculated from using values for the nonspherical potential, the impact is several percent. Moreover, the experimentally based and data agree with theoretically calculated values for the nonspherical potentials.

Abstract:The thermal conductivity and self-diffusion coefficients for molecular nitrogen and oxygen are investigated with the direct molecular simulation (DMS) technique using high-fidelity, ab initio potential energy surfaces. The DMS results are compared to available experimental data, and remarkable agreement is observed in all cases. Such comparisons are restricted to relatively low temperature, typically below 2000 K. For temperatures up to 10 000 K, the DMS data are also in excellent agreement with the corresponding transport properties obtained using kinetic theory based on collision integrals evaluated with simplified, point-particle interatomic potentials. An analysis of the Eucken approximation shows that the Eucken correction factor is based upon reasonably accurate assumptions, but a significant improvement can be obtained by properly accounting for the ratio of mass to momentum diffusion. Finally, it is shown that the DMS transport data for mass, momentum, and energy are consistent with kinetic theory across a wide range of temperatures, thus offering convincing evidence for the reliability of the methodologies employed for their determination. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.013401 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:In this study, the Maxwell-Stefan binary diffusion coefficients (Dij) of C1-C6 n-alkanes-N2 are calculated using the Green-Kubo formula. The ratio of p ij at different pressures (from 1 to 1000 bar) to that at 1 atm (reference condition) is studied. It is found that the ratiop ij/p ijref first decreases and then increases with increasing density, finally reaching 1.3 for n-C6H14-N2 at 1000 bar, 600 K. The gradual increase in molecular attraction at the beginning of the density increase results in a slower pressure increase compared to that of an ideal gas, contributing to the decreasing trend of p ij/p ijref. As the density continues to increase, the enhanced molecular repulsion and the molecular volume exclusion effect accelerate the pressure increase beyond that of an ideal gas, leading to an increasing trend in p ij/p ijref. Finally, the results obtained by the Green-Kubo method are compared with those obtained from empirical methods, and an equation for the refinement of Dij is formulated.

Abstract:In this study, a robust and pragmatic technique has been developed for the first time to quantify preferential and mutual mass transfer of gases-light oil systems at high pressures and elevated temperatures by performing dynamic volume analysis. Experimentally, diffusion tests have been conducted for gases-light oil systems at high pressures and a constant reservoir temperature with a PVT setup. During experiments, the dynamic liquid volume due to gas dissolution and light-component extraction has been measured and recorded continuously, while gas fractions at the beginning and end of each test have been measured with gas chromatography (GC) analysis, respectively. Theoretically, the preferential and mutual diffusion between gas and oil phases can be quantified by minimizing the discrepancies between the measured and calculated swelling factor and gas composition. According to the measured swelling factors, oil swelling effect slows down during the late stage of a diffusion experiment, indicating that CO2 dissolution is transited from the natural convection-dominated period to the diffusion-dominated period. Compared to the swelling effect at a higher pressure, the effect of light-component extraction on the determined diffusion coefficients of gas components becomes weaker. In addition, both individual diffusion coefficients for each gas component of a gas mixture in an oil phase and oil component extracted from the oil phase to the gas phase are increased with pressure. The diffusion-convection model allows us to isolate the natural convection from the molecular diffusion, leading to larger diffusivities compared with the ones determined from the conventional method.

Abstract:The Lennard–Jones chain model, which was developed from the equation for the self-diffusion coefficient in a Lennard–Jones fluid and the molecular dynamics simulation data of a tangent hard-sphere chain fluid, is used to calculate the self-diffusion coefficient of n -alkanes. n -Alkanes are characterized by a Lennard–Jones segment diameter, a segment–segment interaction energy, and a chain length expressed as the number of segments. The equation represents the experimental self-diffusion coefficients with an average absolute deviation of 3.93% for 16 n -alkanes covering wide ranges of temperature and pressure. The correlated results are compared with those of the rough Lennard–Jones model. A generalized version of the Lennard–Jones chain model is presented which requires only the carbon number in order to predict n -alkane self-diffusivity.

Abstract:Self-diffusion coefficients and shear viscosity coefficients of pure 1-alkanol liquids from methanol to 1-hexanol were predicted using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These coefficients have been calculated using the Green-Kubo and Einstein methods at a range of temperatures of 200-330 K with increments of 10 K. Two force fields, TraPPE-UA and OPLS-AA were applied. The predicted results were compared to the experimental data, and the activation energies for self-diffusion and shear viscosity were calculated using the Arrhenius equation. The Stokes-Einstein equation was used to examine its capability in predicting the relationship between self-diffusion and shear viscosity, and the effective hydrodynamic radius was determined using both the experimental data and the results from MD simulations. The TraPPE-UA force field showed better results for the transport properties of methanol, while the OPLS-AA force field performed well for predicting shear viscosity but weakly for self-diffusion, particularly at low temperatures and for 1-alkanol with higher methylene numbers. Using the mean squared displacement method for self-diffusion was found to be more accurate than the Green-Kubo method, while the Green-Kubo method was slightly better for calculating shear viscosity. The Stokes-Einstein equation is valid for pure 1-alkanol liquids with temperature-dependent effective hydrodynamic radius.
A Review of Experimental Solubilities and a General Correlation between the Temperature-Dependent Solubility and Solute and Solvent Molar Masses for Binary n-Alkane Mixtures

Abstract:The solubility of a "heavy" alkane (solute) in a "light" alkane (solvent) is generally temperature dependent. Moreover, it is determined by the molar masses of the solute and solvent. In the current paper, published solubility data for binary normal-alkane mixtures is reviewed (solid-liquid equilibrium). A total of 43 unique solute-solvent data-sets, obtained from a total of 24 published experimental studies, are collected and presented in a systematic manner. Based on thermodynamic considerations and the experimental data, it is demonstrated that there is a log-linear relationship between the solubility and the temperature in the dilute range. Linear regression is employed to 1) obtain data-set-specific solubility-temperature best-fit parameters and 2) obtain a general correlation between the solubility and the solvent and solute molar masses and the temperature. Finally, it is demonstrated that the developed correlation carries predictive power even for multi-component mixtures by utilizing solvent and solute average molar masses.

Abstract:Molecular transport through tight porous media is crucial to shale gas exploration, but deeper insights of the elemental physics are still required, particularly under high pressures and nanoscale confinements, where Navier–Stokes and Boltzmann solutions are no longer valid. In this work, we carry out a fundamental and systematic study of self-diffusion using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations, varying fluid rarefaction, confinement, and surface friction. We differentiate between fluid–fluid and fluid-wall collisions to identify the interplay of the underpinning diffusive mechanisms, namely, molecular and Knudsen diffusion. We find that the Bosanquet formula, which has been used for describing rarefied gases, is also able to provide a good semi-analytical description of self-diffusivities in confined dense fluids, as long as the pore height is not smaller than five molecular diameters. Importantly, this allows us to predict the self-diffusion coefficient, regardless of the fluid rarefaction, confinement state, and surface roughness, in a wide range of Knudsen numbers that were not possible before. Often as a source of debate, we prove here that despite strong fluid inhomogeneities arising in these conditions, the Einstein self-diffusivity can still be used within Fick's law, provided boundary effects are considered when using Fick's setup. Finally, we notice that a previously identified linear scaling of self-diffusivities with confinement is only valid in the limit of low densities and frictionless walls, which is not representative of shale reservoirs. This work will serve as a foundation for investigating the anomalous gas transport behavior observed in the recent work of dense, confined fluids.

Abstract:Continuous Fractional Component Monte Carlo (CFCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to calculate the solubilities and self-diffusion coefficients of four light n-alkanes (methane, ethane, propane, and n-butane) in aqueous NaCl solutions as well as the thermodynamic properties of their corresponding hydrate crystals. Correction factors k ij to the Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules for alkane groups (CH3) and water are optimized (k ij = 1.04) by fitting excess chemical potentials to experimental data at 1 bar and 298.15 K. Using these values of k ij , we calculate the solubilities of the four alkanes in aqueous NaCl solutions with different molalities (0-6) mol/kg at different temperatures (278.15-308.15) K and pressures (1, 100, 200, 300) bar. The diffusion coefficients of the four alkanes in NaCl solutions (0-6) mol/kg are calculated at different temperatures (278.15-308.15) K and 1 bar and corrected for the finite-size effects. The lattice parameters of the corresponding hydrates with different guest molecules are computed using MD simulations at different temperatures (150-290) K and pressures (5-700) MPa. Isothermal compressibilities at 287.15 K and thermal expansion coefficients at 14.5 MPa for the corresponding hydrates are calculated. We present an extensive collection of thermodynamic data related to gas hydrates that contribute to a fundamental understanding of natural gas hydrate science.
