Abstract:Background One in seven members of China’s population are migrants. There are an estimated 41 million children left behind in rural areas who are living without one or both of their parents. The impact of two- and single-parent migration on child mental health and risk behaviors is unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the mental health and risk behaviors among children whose parents are either both migrating (B-LBC), have one parent migrating (O-LBC) or those whose parents do not migrate (N-LBC). Methods This study was a cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire conducted in rural areas with high proportions of left behind children (LBC) in Anhui Province, southeast China. The tools used were the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires, Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Young’s Internet Addiction Test for Chinese. Results Full data were available for 699 B-LBC, 552 O-LBC and 741 N-LBC. After adjusting for gender, age, grade, number of siblings and self-rated socio-economic status, B-LBC were significantly more likely to have higher emotional symptoms scores (B(SE) = 0.36(0.11), p < 0.01), higher hyperactivity scores (B(SE) = 0.22(0.11), p < 0.01) and higher total difficulties scores (B(SE) = 0.79(0.29), p < 0.01) than N-LBC. B-LBC were also more likely to be an addicted internet user (OR(95%CI) = 1.91(1.33, 2.76), p < 0.01) compared to N-LBC. However, there were no identified differences between O-LBC and N-LBC or between O-LBC and B-LBC in any measures. Conclusions Our findings found that living with one parent or both parents was associated with better mental health and fewer risk behaviors than was being separated from both parents. Future research is needed to consider the implications of these findings for policies and programs to protect LBC, especially for those with two migrating parents.
The Residential Environment and Health and Well-Being of Chinese Migrant Populations: A Systematic Review.

Abstract:China's internal migrants suffer from marginalised housing conditions, poor neighbourhood environments and residential segregation, which may have significant implications on health and well-being. Echoing recent calls for interdisciplinary research on migrant health and well-being, this study examines the associations and mechanisms of the impact of the residential environment on the health and well-being of Chinese migrants. We found that most of the relevant studies supported the "healthy migration effect", but the phenomenon was only applicable to migrants' self-reported physical health rather than mental health. The subjective well-being of migrants is lower than that of urban migrants. There is a debate between the effectiveness of residential environmental improvements and the ineffectiveness of residential environmental improvements in terms of the impact of the neighbourhood environment on migrants' health and well-being. Housing conditions and the neighbourhood's physical and social environment can enhance migrants' health and well-being by strengthening place attachment and social cohesion, building localised social capital and gaining neighbourhood social support. Residential segregation on the neighbourhood scale affects the health outcomes of migrant populations through the mechanism of relative deprivation. Our studies build a vivid and comprehensive picture of research to understand migration, urban life and health and well-being.
Mental health and mental health help-seeking behaviors among first-generation voluntary African migrants: A systematic review

Abstract:Purpose Mental health challenges are highly prevalent in African migrants. However, understanding of mental health outcomes in first-generation voluntary African migrants is limited, despite the unique challenges faced by this migrant subgroup. This review aimed to synthesize the literature to understand the mental health challenges, help-seeking behavior, and the relationship between mental health and mental health help-seeking behavior in first-generation voluntary African migrants living outside Africa. Methods Medline Complete, EMBASE, CINAHL Complete, and APA PsychINFO were searched for studies published between January 2012 to December 2023. Retrieved articles were processed, data from selected articles were extracted and synthesized to address the study aims, and included studies were evaluated for risk of bias. Results Eight studies were included, including four quantitative and four qualitative studies, which focused on women with postnatal depression. Mental health challenges reported in the quantitative studies were depression, interpersonal disorders, and work-related stress. Risk (e.g., neglect from health professionals and lack of social/spousal support) and protective (e.g., sensitivity of community services and faith) factors associated with mental health were identified. Barriers (e.g., cultural beliefs about mental health and racial discrimination) and facilitators (sensitizing African women about mental health) of mental health help-seeking behavior were also identified. No significant relationship was reported between mental health and mental health help-seeking behavior, and the risk of bias results indicated some methodological flaws in the studies. Conclusion This review shows the dearth of research focusing on mental health and help-seeking behavior in this subgroup of African migrants. The findings highlight the importance of African migrants, especially mothers with newborns, examining cultural beliefs that may impact their mental health and willingness to seek help. Receiving countries should also strive to understand the needs of first-generation voluntary African migrants living abroad and offer mental health support that is patient-centered and culturally sensitive.

Exploring social determinants of mental health of older unforced migrants: A systematic review

Abstract:Abstract Background and Objectives While the vulnerabilities stemming from the intersection of aging and migration are widely recognized, the migration contexts and the factors influencing the mental health of older unforced migrants have received scant attention. This review explores the drivers of unforced migrations in later life and the individual, relational, and structural factors influencing their mental health and well-being. Research Design and Methods Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of seven databases for English peer-reviewed journal articles was conducted. A total of 21 studies were identified and analyzed inductively. Results The review classified motivations for migration as push factors and pull factors: push factors such as escaping structural inequities in the homeland and pull factors included seeking better lifestyle opportunities and reuniting with family. The positive determinants of mental health included cordial family relationships, paid employment, the presence of a partner, and strong support networks. Advanced age, absence of a partner, lifestyle changes, lack of intergenerational support, poor language proficiency, unfavorable policies, lack of access to resources, and systemic biases negatively impacted the mental health of older unforced migrants. Discussion and Implications The review highlights the need to recognize the diversity among older migrants to develop policies and programs that address their specific circumstances. Recognizing their strengths, rather than focusing solely on their vulnerabilities will help create a more positive and supportive environment, enabling them to thrive in their new communities.

Children's emotional and behavioral response following a migration: a scoping review

Abstract:Background: Migration is a present and pressing global phenomenon, as climate change and political instability continue to rise, more populations will be forced to relocate. Efficient strategies must be in place to aid the transition of vulnerable populations - such as children - and strategic interventions designed based on an understanding of their particular needs and risks. Aim of the review: This article reviewed recent research regarding the mental health of migrant children identifying a wide array of common characteristics to their emotional and behavioral responses following a migration, and compiled an extensive list of protective and risk factors. 48 studies were selected from Proquest, WOS, SCOPUS, and Pubpsych published between 2015 and 2022 covering studies of children around the world. Findings: The migration-related factors that most negatively impacted children's mental health were experiences such as discrimination, loss of access to governmental and educational resources, premigration trauma, loss of community, cultural distance and acculturation, the burden on the family unit, and socioeconomic difficulties. Thus, with the right interventions and policy changes, it is possible to make migration a non-traumatic experience in order to avoid the common emergence of depressive symptoms, PTSS (post-traumatic stress symptoms), anxiety, and other mental health issues. Supporting the family unit's transition, encouraging peer connections, and directing government aid to expedite resources upon arrival will serve as protective factors for children while they integrate into their new environment.
The mental health of European adolescents with vs. without a migration background (2013–2024)–a systematic review

Abstract:Migration has been associated with both adverse and potentially beneficial mental health outcomes, with varying impacts on adolescents. With great flux in European migrations streams, an update is required of its effects on adolescent mental health. This systematic review provides an overview of the relationship between migration background (first, second, and third generation) and psychopathology for youth aged 12–25 living in Europe. A systematic search based on four concepts (i.e., mental health, human migration, European Union, and adolescents) carried out on Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycArticles and Proquest Central led to the retrieval of 51 relevant studies published between April 2013 and August 2024. The present study was conducted and reported according to the PRISMA 2020 Checklist. Our systematic search found some evidence for the increased risk of mental health problems in people with a migration background, showing overall elevated risks for the development of psychotic experiences, psychosomatic symptoms, eating disorders, substance-related disorders and suicidal actions in the migrant population. Little consistent high-quality evidence was found for the effects of migration on any other mental health problems. Identified risk factors for adolescents with a migration background included being a first-generation migrant, low socio-economic status, low ethnic identification, and perceived discrimination. Results are mixed, but suggest that, overall, adolescents with a migration background have a mental health disadvantage. Intervention and prevention programs can be strengthened, not only by focusing more specifically on adolescent migrants, but also by considering the different contexts and experiences that put them at increased risk.

The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder among African migrants: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Evidence exists reporting a high mental health burden among migrants globally. However, there is no global estimate of mental ill-health among African migrants despite their adverse pre-migration environments. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarise the current scholarship regarding the prevalence of anxiety, depression and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the global African migrant population. Methods: We searched six databases (Medline (EBSCOHost), PsycINFO (EBSCOHost), Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) from 1st January 2000 to 31st August 2021. We screened retrieved articles using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools. Random-effects meta-analyses were employed using DerSimonian and Laird estimator based on inverse variance weights. The I2 statistic was used to measure heterogeneity. Results: Our search retrieved 1091 articles, of which 46 were included representing a total of 28,367 African migrants. The weighted mean age of African migrants was 32.98 years, and nearly half were male (n= 12852, 45.31%). Among the included studies, almost nine out of ten (n=41, 89.1%) were cross-sectional studies. The pooled prevalence of anxiety, depression and PTSD was 34.60%;95%CI (26.30-43.00), 33.20%;95%CI (27.70-38.37) and 37.9%;95%CI (23.5- 52.4) respectively. Significant heterogeneity (I2 >98%) existed in the prevalence estimates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Sub-group analyses indicate a significantly higher prevalence of anxiety and depression but PTSD for studies conducted in Africa than outside Africa. Similarly, higher prevalence rates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD were seen in studies that used a screening tool than in those that used a diagnostic tool, although a significant difference was observed for depression only. Conclusion: Despite significant heterogeneity among included studies, our systematic review and meta-analysis show a high prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD among African migrants. Our findings underscore the need to develop and implement serious, culturally appropriate mental health interventions that address post-migration stressors that increase their risk of mental ill-health and successful integration into host communities.

Abstract:Labour migration is a challenge for the globalised world due to its long-term effects such as the formation of transnational families. These families, where family members of migrant workers are “left-behind”, are becoming a common phenomenon in many low- and middle-income countries. Our systematic literature review investigated the effects of international parental labour migration on the mental health and well-being of left-behind children. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we performed searches in PubMed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar, resulting in 30 finally included studies. We found that mental health and well-being outcomes of left-behind children differed across and sometimes even within regions. However, only studies conducted in the Americas and South Asia observed purely negative effects. Overall, left-behind children show abnormal Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire scores and report higher levels of depression and loneliness than children who do not live in transnational families. Evidence from the studies suggests that gender of the migrant parent, culture and other transnational family characteristics contribute to the well-being and mental health of left-behind children. Further research utilising longitudinal data is needed to better understand the complex and lasting effects on left-behind children.

Abstract:The number of forcibly displaced people has more than doubled over the past decade. Many people fleeing are left in limbo without a secure pathway to citizenship or residency. This mixed-methods systematic review reports the prevalence of mental disorders in migrants living in limbo, the association between limbo and mental illness, and the experiences of these migrants in high income countries. We searched electronic databases for quantitative and qualitative studies published after January 1, 2010, on mental illness in precarious migrants living in HICs and performed a meta-analysis of prevalence rates. Fifty-eight articles met inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis yielded prevalence rates of 43.0% for anxiety disorders (95% CI 29.0-57.0), 49.5% for depression (40.9-58.0) and 40.8% for posttraumatic stress disorder (30.7-50.9). Having an insecure status was associated with higher rates of mental illness in most studies comparing migrants in limbo to those with secure status. Six themes emerged from the qualitative synthesis: the threat of deportation, uncertainty, social exclusion, stigmatization, social connection and religion. Clinicians should take an ecosocial approach to care that attends to stressors and symptoms. Furthermore, policymakers can mitigate the development of mental disorders among migrants by adopting policies that ensure rapid pathways to protected status.

Abstract:The present review postulates the current mental health status in migrant children and adolescents in the North American continent. 35 studies published from 2009 to 2013 chosen from a systematic literature research were included. Almost all studies were conducted in the United States and Canada. From the perspective of selection effect, migration as a risk factor was not proven. The migration process perspective could have underestimated a higher danger of problem behavior in second-generation migrant children. Comparing native and migrant children, balanced results in problem behavior were reported, but the Asian migrant group was at higher risk of developing mental disorders. Family-based risk factors were offered: high acculturation stress, low English language competence, language brokering, discrepancies in children’s and parent’s cultural orientation, the non-Western cultural orientation, e.g., collectivistic, acceptance feelings of parents, or harsh parenting. However, the importance to support migrant families in the acculturation process becomes apparent.

Abstract:Background Concerns for the welfare and human capital development of children of migrant workers in China are growing. An estimated 60 million children were left behind in rural areas, and a further 15 million accompanied their parents to urban areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of migration on psychosocial and developmental outcomes of left-behind children (LBC) and urban migrant children (UMC). Methods Self-completion and well-validated questionnaires were administered to primary-school and middle-school children, who were identified by random stratified sampling of schools and within schools in two rural counties and two cities, which are the major feeder and receiving areas for migrants in Zhejiang province, respectively. The questionnaire included migration status and history, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which measures emotional disorders, conduct disorders, hyperactivity, peer problems, and prosocial behaviours. Logistic regression was used to define the effect of migration on SDQ outcomes. Informed consent was obtained from children and their parents, and ethical approval from Zhejiang University Research Ethics Committee. Findings Full data were available for 1876 UMC and 671 LBC aged 9–17 years (1287 boys and 1124 girls [136 were excluded in the analysis because of missing data]; mean age 13·5 years [SD 1·5] for boys and 13·3 years [1·6] for girls). 192 (8%; 120 [6%] UMC and 72 [11%] LBC) had emotional disorders, 298 (12%; 221 [12%] UMC and 77 [12%] LBC) had conduct disorders, 300 (12%; 214 [11%] UMC and 86 [13%] LBC) showed hyperactivity, 357 (14%; 96 [5%] UMC and 261 [39%] LBC) reported peer problems, and 2327 (91%; 1726 [92%] UMC and 601 [90%] LBC) had prosocial tendency. Compared with UMC, LBC manifested more emotional disorders (adjusted odds ratio 1·77 [95% CI 1·26–2·48]; p=0·001) and peer problems (11·21 [8·46–14·85]; p=0·000), but were less likely to be prosocial (0·71 [0·51–0·99]; p=0·04). Large differences were reported between the two groups in emotional disorders, peer problems, total difficulty score, and prosocial tendency, some of the key items of the SDQ. Interpretation Migration with parents, rather than separation from parents, led to more favourable emotional and behavioural outcomes. [Osteoarthritis of the knee: lose weight first?].

Abstract:Being heavy and having knee pain often co-exists. To date, the optimal treatment for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and obesity remains the subject of debate, since patients with a high BMI (> 30 kg/m2) have a higher risk of complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Kerkhoffs and colleagues suggest that these patients should first be submitted to a weight-loss programme prior to their TKA to reduce the risk of complications. This commentary addresses various questions arising from the Dutch meta-analysis by Kerkhoffs. For instance, should patients who fail to lose weight still undergo TKA or have bariatric surgery, or are there other options? Finally, suggestions are made for future research that might shed light upon this critical issue.
The mental health status of Chinese rural–urban migrant workers

Abstract:Objectives There are currently around 120 million rural–urban migrants in China. Elsewhere migration has been associated with increased vulnerability to mental health problems. This study was conducted to explore the mental health status and help seeking behaviours of migrant workers in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang Province, and to compare them with permanent urban and rural dwellers. Methods A self-completion questionnaire including items relating to sociodemographics, health and lifestyles and mental health, was completed by 4453 migrant workers and 1957 urban workers in Hangzhou city, and by 1909 rural residents in Western Zhejiang Province. Results The mean age of the migrants was 27 years, (male 29 years, female 25 years). They worked long hours (28% >12 h per day, 81% 6 or 7 days per week) and their living conditions were very basic. On the SF-36 mental health scale migrants had lower scores (52.4) than rural residents (60.4, P < 0.0001) but scored higher than urban residents (47.2, P = 0.003). The difference between urbanites and migrants disappeared after adjustment for confounders ( P = 0.06). Independent predictors of better mental health status among migrants were being unmarried, migrating with a partner, higher salary, good self-reported health and good relationships with co-workers. There were small significant differences in suicide ideation and attempts between the three groups with suicide ideation commonest in migrants and suicide attempts most common in the rural population. Fewer than 1% across all three groups had received any professional help for depression or anxiety. Conclusion Rural–urban migrant workers in this part of China are not especially vulnerable to poor mental health. This may result from a sense of well being associated with upward economic mobility and improved opportunities, and the relatively high social capital in migrant communities.
Ethnic Disparities in Access to Mental Health Services for Black and Asian Migrants in Major Resettlement Countries

Abstract:Ethnic inequalities in high-income countries result in higher risk of mental illness and lower access to healthcare services for migrant populations than the majority White populations. This literature review examined evidence of the responsible barriers. A systematic search of six databases (Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection; eBook Collection [EBSCOhost]; CINAHL; GreenFILE; Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts; and MEDLINE) was done using search terms. Eighteen recent, locally accessible studies conducted in six major resettlement countries were selected following PRISMA guidelines and the extracted evidence was analysed descriptively and thematically. Three main themes of ethnic mental health differentials of Black and Asian migrants were identified: access to services (13 studies), risk of mental illness (7 studies), and experience of care services (7 studies). Their access disparities revealed migrants suffer inequalities in service utilisation (5 studies) and greater obstacles to receiving care (8 studies). Their higher risk of mental illness was related to over-diagnosis of psychosis (2 studies), higher prevalence (4 studies), and exposure to predisposing factors (3 studies). Migrants experienced poorer quality and outcomes of care (3 studies), and use of restraint (2 studies) and seclusion (1 study) and expressed fear and mistrust of services (2 studies). The common ethnic barriers in service delivery were language and cultural difficulties, systemic discrimination and marginalisation, and social stigmatisation. It is proposed that systemic racism as well as communication and cultural difficulties are the core determinants of migrants' ethnic disparities of accessing mental health services in these major host countries.

Abstract:Migration is a key social determinant of health affecting children's life chances and health outcomes. Yet, relatively little is known about young migrants' own health experiences. This paper reports findings from a systematic review examining the health experiences of children who migrated in the Western Pacific region. A systematic search of the peer-reviewed literature from 2007-17 was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Web of Science, ASSIA and IBSS. Included articles reported data generated with children up to 18 years and who had migrated across international borders to the Western Pacific region (predominantly Australasia). The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess study quality. Eleven of 499 articles identified were included in the review and focused on three areas: diet and body size; mental health; and social integration. The review exposes the paucity of research on the health experiences of child migrants in the Western Pacific region. More child-centred research that examines the health-related impacts of migration on young people, and from their own perspectives, is urgently needed.

Background:The literature indicates an increasing interest in the mental health of refugees (R) and asylum seekers (AS) – particularly how it could be affected by previous exposure to trauma and violence – but less has been written about the issues they are forced to face during the post-migration period and how these also can affect mental health. Research shows that the mental health of R/AS is highly influenced by their post-migration conditions and may deteriorate due to post-migration social health-related determinants; in addition, a lack of language skills, discrimination, separation from family, poverty, and other stressors can contribute to social isolation. The difficulty in asking for help in case of psychological distress and, consequently, in accessing care, contributes to the worsening of their clinical condition.Aims:The primary purpose of this study is to identify and provide a review of the clinical tools used to screen migrants (R/AS) at risk of developing psychological distress, identifying post-migration difficulties.Methods:We searched studies in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane (Central), and Cinahl (ultimate) with the last search on 14 April 2023, using a combination of keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).Results:Our systematic search identified 1,878 records. After removing duplicates, we screened 1,238 records by title and abstract, retaining 97 for full text review. Of these, 68 met full eligibility criteria (1995–2023). A total of 30 social scales have been identified, as well as structured or semi-structured questionnaires and interviews. Translated into multiple languages, the tools can be self-administered or administered by trained professionals. PMLD is known for its effectiveness in evaluating the post-migration period and predicting mental health issues.Conclusions:Considering the limited number of studies and, consequently, the limited number of tools found, it can be inferred that not enough attention is given to post-migration in the broader sense.

Abstract:Background: Globally, a growing number of children and adolescents are left behind when parents migrate. We investigated the effect of parental migration on the health of left behind-children and adolescents in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: For this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsychINFO, Global Index Medicus, Scopus, and Popline from inception to April 27, 2017, without language restrictions, for observational studies investigating the effects of parental migration on nutrition, mental health, unintentional injuries, infectious disease, substance use, unprotected sex, early pregnancy, and abuse in left-behind children (aged 0-19 years) in LMICs. We excluded studies in which less than 50% of participants were aged 0-19 years, the mean or median age of participants was more than 19 years, fewer than 50% of parents had migrated for more than 6 months, or the mean or median duration of migration was less than 6 months. We screened studies using systematic review software and extracted summary estimates from published reports independently. The main outcomes were risk and prevalence of health outcomes, including nutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight, overweight and obesity, low birthweight, and anaemia), mental health (depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, conduct disorders, self-harm, and suicide), unintentional injuries, substance use, abuse, and infectious disease. We calculated pooled risk ratios (RRs) and standardised mean differences (SMDs) using random-effects models. This study is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42017064871. Findings: Our search identified 10 284 records, of which 111 studies were included for analysis, including a total of 264 967 children (n=106 167 left-behind children and adolescents; n=158 800 children and adolescents of non-migrant parents). 91 studies were done in China and focused on effects of internal labour migration. Compared with children of non-migrants, left-behind children had increased risk of depression and higher depression scores (RR 1·52 [95% CI 1·27-1·82]; SMD 0·16 [0·10-0·21]), anxiety (RR 1·85 [1·36-2·53]; SMD 0·18 [0·11-0·26]), suicidal ideation (RR 1·70 [1·28-2·26]), conduct disorder (SMD 0·16 [0·04-0·28]), substance use (RR 1·24 [1·00-1·52]), wasting (RR 1·13 [1·02-1·24]) and stunting (RR 1·12 [1·00-1·26]). No differences were identified between left-behind children and children of non-migrants for other nutrition outcomes, unintentional injury, abuse, or diarrhoea. No studies reported outcomes for other infectious diseases, self-harm, unprotected sex, or early pregnancy. Study quality varied across the included studies, with 43% of studies at high or unclear risk of bias across five or more domains. Interpretation: Parental migration is detrimental to the health of left-behind children and adolescents, with no evidence of any benefit. Policy makers and health-care professionals need to take action to improve the health of these young people. Funding: Wellcome Trust.

Abstract:Transcultural Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. To support resilience in contexts of migration, a deeper understanding of the experiences of both receiving communities and migrants is required. Research on the impacts of migration on community life is limited in contexts with high internal migration (i.e., migrating within one's country of origin). Evidence suggests that cultural similarity, community relationships, and access to resources may be protective factors that could be leveraged to support the mental health of internal migrants. The current study uses data drawn from a sample of pregnant Peruvian women (N = 251), 87 of whom reported being internal migrants and 164 of whom reported being from the locale of the study (Lima, Perú). The aim was to better understand the social experience of internal migration for both local and migrant women. Inductive thematic analysis was used to examine migration experience and perceived impact of migration on community life. Internal migrants discussed three themes relative to their experiences: motivations, adjustment, and challenges. Experiences of women in receiving communities consisted of four themes related to migration: positive, negative, neutral, and mixed perceptions. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC-22) software was also used to assess sentiment towards migration. Across both analytic methods, migration motivations and perceptions were multifaceted and migrants reported a wide range of challenges before, during, and after migration. Findings indicated that attitudes toward migration are broadly positive, and that there is a more positive appraisal of migration's impact on the community life for internal as opposed to international migration.

Abstract:ObjectiveMigrants from Sub-Saharan Africa to China faced challenges in accessing healthcare. Less is known about their depression prevalence. We aim to address this gap by providing an initial estimation on symptoms indicative of depression..MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted from August to October in 2019. Eligibility was defined as being originally from a Sub-Saharan African country and cumulative residence in China for at least one month. A convenience sample was drawn from snowball sampling online and venue-based sampling by community outreach. The primary outcome, symptoms indicative of depression, were measured by the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale using 16 as the cutoff. Multivariable logistic regressions were employed to examine the association between depression symptoms and their migration-related correlates. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4.ResultsThe prevalence of symptoms indicative of depression assessed by CES-D was high at 44% among 928 participants when using 16 as a cutoff. Depression symptoms were associated with unsatisfactory housing conditions (aOR: 1.7, 95%CI: 0.8 to 3.3) and perception of very unfriendly attitudes from the local people (aOR: 4.5, 95%CI: 1.2 to 16.1) after adjusting for covariates.ConclusionsDepression symptoms were prevalent among SSA migrants in China and warrants attention and intervention. Support should be provided during the post-migration period in China to mitigate depression risks. Future studies are needed to build more evidence on SSA migrants' mental health and to inform global health policies and programming.

Abstract:To explore mental health status and related characteristics in a sample of Chinese male rural–urban migrants. Subjects were 1,595 male rural–urban migrant workers selected though a multi-stage sample survey conducted in two cities (Hangzhou and Guangzhou). Data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Both life and work stressors were examined. Stress and mental health status were measured by the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS) and the Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ), respectively. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with probable mental disorders . There are approximately 120 million rural–urban migrants in China. The prevalence of probable mental disorders in the sample population was 24.4% (95% CI: 23.3–25.5%), which was higher than among urban residents (20.2%, 95% CI: 18.8–21.7%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that five characteristics were positively associated with risk for probable mental disorders: originating in the South (OR = 2.00; 95% CI = 1.02, 4.00), higher life stress (OR = 7.63; 95% CI = 5.88, 10.00), staying in the city for 5–9 months each year (OR = 2.56; 95% CI = 1.67, 3.85), higher work stress (OR = 2.56; 95% CI = 1.96, 3.33), and separation from wife (OR = 2.43; 95% CI = 1.61, 3.57). Employment in machinery and transportation (OR = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.36, 0.81) and higher self-worth (OR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.28, 0.62) were negatively associated. Findings support an urgent need to develop specific policies and programs to address mental health problems among Chinese rural–urban migrants.
