Abstract:Using the property of the solution of the Langevin dynamics with a generalized frictional memory kernel and time-dependent deterministic force field, we show that a solution method (which is very simple as well as shortcut) can be used to derive a Fokker–Planck-like equation (FPLE) for this dynamics. Using this equation, we derive a relation to find the modulation of the entropy production by a time-dependent external force. We also derive a relation between the phase space dynamics and the entropy production of the irreversible thermodynamics. Then FPLE is derived for the non-Markovian dynamics with additional force from harmonic potential, magnetic fields, and both, respectively. Thus, the method is instructive in deriving the FPLE in a shortcut way in the presence of an additional time-dependent stochastic force. Here, we have to consider that the relevant drift terms are independent of the random force.Another very important point is to be noted here. To interpret the FPLE, we recognize that the memory of the non-Markovian dynamics can induce a fictitious electric field in the presence of a time-independent magnetic field and a conservative force field. Then one may notice that like the forces from time-dependent damping, harmonic potential and magnetic field, the fictitious electric field puts its own identity to modulate the effect of the external time-dependent force in the presence of a non-Markovian thermal bath. We understand that the present study, with the recognition of the induced electric field-like quantity, will bring strong attention to different areas of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, such as the physical tuning of conductivity of ions in solid electrolytes and stochastic thermodynamics for non-Markovian dynamics, etc.

Brownian motion of charged particles driven by correlated noise

Abstract:Stochastic motion of charged particles in the magnetic field was first studied almost half a century ago in the classical works by Taylor and Kursunoglu in connection with the diffusion of electrons and ions in plasma. In their works the long-time limits of the mean square displacement (MSD) of the particles have been found. Later Furuse on the basis of standard Langevin theory generalized their results for arbitrary times. The currently observed revival of these problems is mainly related to memory effects in the diffusion of particles, which appear when colored random forces act on the particles from their surroundings. In the present work an exact analytical solution of the generalized Langevin equation has been found for the motion of the particle in an external magnetic field when the random force is exponentially correlated in the time. The obtained MSD of the particle motion across the field contains a term proportional to the time, a constant term, and contributions exponentially decaying in the time. The results are more general than the previous results from the literature and are obtained in a considerably simpler way applicable to many other problems of the Brownian motion with memory.

Memory-induced oscillations of a driven particle in a dissipative correlated medium

Abstract:The overdamped dynamics of a particle is in general affected by its interaction with the surrounding medium, especially out of equilibrium, and when the latter develops spatial and temporal correlations. Here we consider the case in which the medium is modeled by a scalar Gaussian field with relaxational dynamics, and the particle is dragged at constant velocity through the medium by a moving harmonic trap. This mimics the setting of an active microrheology experiment conducted in a near-critical medium. When the particle is displaced from its average position in the nonequilibrium steady state, its subsequent relaxation is shown to feature damped oscillations. This is similar to what has been recently predicted and observed in viscoelastic fluids, but differs from what happens in the absence of driving or for an overdamped Markovian dynamics, in which cases oscillations cannot occur. We characterize these oscillating modes in terms of the parameters of the underlying mesoscopic model for the particle and the medium, confirming our analytical predictions via numerical simulations.

Abstract:The transport of individual particles in inhomogeneous environments is complex and exhibits non-Markovian responses. The latter may be quantified by a memory function within the framework of the linear generalised Langevin equation (GLE). Here, we exemplify the implications of steady driving on the memory function of a colloidal model system for Brownian motion in a corrugated potential landscape, specifically, for one-dimensional motion in a sinusoidal potential. To this end, we consider the overdamped limit of the GLE, which is facilitated by separating the memory function into a singular (Markovian) and a regular (non-Markovian) part. Relying on exact solutions for the investigated model, we show that the random force entering the GLE must display a bias far from equilibrium, which corroborates a recent general prediction. Based on data for the mean-square displacement obtained from Brownian dynamics simulations, we estimate the memory function for different driving strengths and show that already moderate driving accelerates the decay of the memory function by several orders of magnitude in time. We find that the memory may persist on much longer timescales than expected from the convergence of the mean-square displacement to its long-time asymptote. Furthermore, the functional form of the memory function changes from a monotonic decay to a non-monotonic, damped oscillatory behaviour, which can be understood from a competition of confined motion and depinning. Our analysis of the simulation data further reveals a pronounced non-Gaussianity, which questions the Gaussian approximation of the random force entering the GLE.

Abstract:The response to external forces is one of the important properties of stochastic processes. In the present paper, we derive the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) for the description of the non-Markovian Brownian motion (BM) of a particle, e.g. a molecular solute in a solvent, in a harmonic potential. It is assumed that not only the solute particle but also the surrounding molecules respond to the external field. This effect is taken into account by a modification of the Caldeira-Legget particle-bath model. It is also assumed that the bath particles experience friction, modeled by the Stokes force. We show that under the influence of the external force the memory function and the random thermal force are affected by the external potential. Explicit expressions for these functions and the elastic force acting on the Brownian particle are obtained in the discrete variant of the model and its continuum approximation. In the latter case, analytical formulas for relevant time correlation functions describing the dynamics of the solute are obtained coming from the memory function that describes its free BM.

Abstract:It is well known that the noise-induced transition can be a characteristic of a stochastic process (SP) if and only if it is nonlinear. However, in the present paper, we demonstrate that the transition can occur even in a linear SP. In the presence of a fluctuating magnetic field (FMF), which is Gaussian in nature, the stationary probability density function for a Brownian particle confined in a harmonic potential may be non-Gaussian with multiple extrema. Thus, the distribution of the particle deviates strongly from the expected Boltzmann type, i.e., Gaussian as well as unimodal, and it appears to be an important signature of the FMF with a new mechanism in the field of noise-induced transition. This motivates us to study the distribution of particles in a nonlinear stochastic system where a Brownian particle is confined in a bi-stable potential in the presence of a fluctuating magnetic field. For this system, one may observe the position distribution of the particle with many islands which are not expected from the given potential energy field. Thus, the appearance of the islands corroborates the phenomenon of dynamical localization, which explains the small current in the semiconductor for a given amplitude of the oscillating magnetic field. At the same time, the present study may be useful in exploring the relevant mechanism of the barrier-crossing phenomenon in the presence of a fluctuating magnetic field.

Memory induced Magnus effect

Abstract:Spinning objects which move through air or liquids experience a Magnus force. This effect is commonly exploited in ball sports but also of considerable importance for applications and fundamental science. Opposed to large objects where Magnus forces are strong, they are only weak at small scales and eventually vanish for overdamped micron-sized particles in simple liquids. Here we demonstrate an about one-million-fold enhanced Magnus force of spinning colloids in viscoelastic fluids. Such fluids are characterized by a time-delayed response to external perturbations which causes a deformation of the fluidic network around the moving particle. When the particle additionally spins, the deformation field becomes misaligned relative to the particle's moving direction, leading to a force perpendicular to the direction of travel and the spinning axis. The presence of strongly enhanced memory-induced Magnus forces at microscales opens novel applications for particle sorting and steering, the creation and visualization of anomalous flows and more.

Peculiarities of the stochastic motion in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are widely used in spintronic devices as passive elements (for stabilization of ferromangetic layers) and as active elements (for information coding). In both cases switching between the different AFM states depends in a great extent from the environmental noise. In the present paper we derive the stochastic Langevin equations for an AFM vector and corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for distribution function in the phase space of generalised coordinate and momentum. Thermal noise is modeled by a random delta-correlated magnetic field that interacts with the dynamic magnetisation of AFM particle. We analyse in details a particular case of the collinear compensated AFM in the presence of spin-polarised current. The energy distribution function for normal modes in the vicinity of two equilibrium states (static and stationary) in sub- and super-critical regimes is found. It is shown that the noise-induced dynamics of AFM vector has pecuilarities compared to that of magnetisation vector in ferromagnets.

Phase Field Simulation of Magnetization Vortex in Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials

Abstract:Magnetization vortices in ferromagnetic nanostructures have attracted considerable attention due to their potential application in nanoscale memory devices. A magnetization vortex with in-plane curling magnetization and out-of-plane magnetization at the core is a unique stable state. The out-of-plane magnetization at the core can be switched from an upward state to a downward state or from a downward state to an upward state by a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. This switchable property makes magnetization vortex a promising candidate for memory cells in future non-volatile data-storage devices. In this work, a real-space phase field model is developed to investigate the switching behavior of magnetization vortex in ferromagnetic nanostructures subjected to different mechanical strains. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation, the phase field model takes into account the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction of magnetizations, which includes the coupling between the magnetization and magnetization gradient. The governing equations in the phase field model are solved simultaneously by means of a nonlinear finite elements method, which can be employed to simulate magnetization vortex without periodic boundary condition. The phase field simulations demonstrate that the vortex polarity of a circular ferromagnetic nanodot can be switched by torsion when the sign of the torsion is opposite to that of vortex chirality, whereas switching does not take place if the sign of torsion is the same as that of vortex chirality. The magneto-elastic coupling and demagnetization field play a decisive role in the polarity switching, which involves an intriguing interplay of magnetization, strain and demagnetization. The results suggest another way to control vortex polarity and vortex stability by mechanical field other than magnetic field and electric current. It is also found that the DM interaction has significant influence on the structure of the magnetization vortex. The DM interaction induces an out-of-plane magnetization on the edge of the vortex and enlarges the size of the vortex core. The magnitude of the out-of-plane magnetization at the vortex core and the edge increases with the increase of DM constant. Besides, the handedness of magnetization vortex also changes when the sign of DM constant changes.

Abstract:We propose that memory effects in the conductivity of metallic systems can be produced by the same two levels systems that are responsible for the 1/f noise. Memory effects are extremely long-lived responses of the conductivity to changes in external parameters such as density or magnetic field. Using the quantum transport theory, we derive a universal relationship between the memory effect and the 1/f noise. Finally, we propose a magnetic memory effect, where the magneto-resistance is sensitive to the history of the applied magnetic field.

Abstract:Analysis of non-Markovian systems and memory-induced phenomena poses an everlasting challenge in the realm of physics. As a paradigmatic example, we consider a classical Brownian particle of mass M subjected to an external force and exposed to correlated thermal fluctuations. We show that the recently developed approach to this system, in which its non-Markovian dynamics given by the Generalized Langevin Equation is approximated by its memoryless counterpart but with the effective particle mass M∗<M, can be derived within the Markovian embedding technique. Using this method, we calculate the first- and the second-order memory correction to Markovian dynamics of the Brownian particle for the memory kernel represented as the Prony series. The second one lowers the effective mass of the system further and improves the precision of the approximation. Our work opens the door for the derivation of higher-order memory corrections to Markovian Langevin dynamics.

Oscillatory behavior in a model of non-Markovian mean field interacting spins

Abstract:We analyze a non-Markovian mean field interacting spin system, related to the Curie--Weiss model. We relax the Markovianity assumption by replacing the memoryless distribution of the waiting times of a classical spin-flip dynamics with a distribution with memory. The resulting stochastic evolution for a single particle is a spin-valued renewal process, an example of two-state semi-Markov process. We associate to the individual dynamics an equivalent Markovian description, which is the subject of our analysis. We study a corresponding interacting particle system, where a mean field interaction is introduced as a time scaling, depending on the overall magnetization of the system, on the waiting times between two successive particle's jumps. Via linearization arguments on the Fokker-Planck mean field limit equation, we give evidence of emerging periodic behavior. Specifically, numerical analysis on the discrete spectrum of the linearized operator, characterized by the zeros of an explicit holomorphic function, suggests the presence of a Hopf bifurcation for a critical value of the temperature, which is in accordance with the one obtained by simulating the N-particle system.

Active magneto gyrator: Memory induced trapped diamagnetism

Abstract:We analytically explore the dynamics of a charged active particle coupled to two thermal baths kept at two different temperatures in two dimensions. The particle is confined to an asymmetric harmonic potential and a magnetic field of constant magnitude is applied perpendicular to the plane of motion of the particle. For such a system, as opposed to Brownian gyrator, the potential asymmetry and temperature gradient are not the key factors for the gyration, as long as finite activity and magnetic field are present. The system shows only a paramagnetic behavior in the absence of either potential asymmetry or temperature gradient. However, by tuning the temperature gradient or potential asymmetry, the system as a function of the duration of activity can exhibit paramagnetic, diamagnetic, or co-existence of both the phases. Interestingly, the magnetic moment vanishes for parameters for which the system possesses a non-equilibrium steady state and hence, a magnetic transition is observed through these non-magnetic points. Further, when the system is suspended in a viscoelastic medium characterized by a finite memory, it exhibits a magnetic transition in the activity-memory parameter space through a non-magnetic line. This non-magnetic line is sensitive to temperature gradient and potential asymmetry. It interestingly forms a closed loop with a diamagnetic phase inside the loop and the entire regime outside as paramagnetic. This results in the emergence of a trapped diamagnetic phase existing only within a finite regime of activity-memory parameter space. This phase eventually disappears as the temperature gradient increases (or decreases) depending on the sign of the potential asymmetry. Moreover, it is observed that by tuning the system parameters, one can obtain zero magnetic moment even for parameter ranges that defy the equilibrium condition of the system.

Abstract:Non-Markovian systems form a broad area of physics that remains greatly unexplored despite years of intensive investigations. The spotlight is on memory as a source of effects that are absent in their Markovian counterparts. In this work we dive into this problem and analyze a driven Brownian particle moving in a spatially periodic potential and exposed to correlated thermal noise. We show that the absolute negative mobility effect, in which the net movement of the particle is in direction opposite to the average force acting on it, may be induced by the memory of the setup. To explain the origin of this phenomenon we resort to the recently developed effective mass approach to dynamics of non-Markovian systems.

Abstract:The dynamics of the growth and relaxation of the magnetization in ferrofluids are determined using theory based on the Fokker-Planck-Brown equation, and Brownian-dynamics simulations. Magnetization growth starting from an equilibrium nonmagnetized state in zero field, and following an instantaneous application of a uniform field of arbitrary strength, is studied with and without interparticle interactions. Similarly, magnetization relaxation is studied starting from an equilibrium magnetized state in a field of arbitrary strength, and following instantaneous removal of the field. In all cases, the dynamics are studied in terms of the time-dependent magnetization m(t) . The field strength is described by the Langevin parameter α , the strength of the interparticle interactions is described by the Langevin susceptibility χL , and the individual particles undergo Brownian rotation with time τB . For noninteracting particles, the average growth time decreases with increasing α due to the torque exerted by the field, while the average relaxation time stays constant at τB ; with vanishingly weak fields, the timescales coincide. The same basic picture emerges for interacting particles, but the weak-field timescales are larger due to collective particle motions, and the average relaxation time exhibits a weak, nonmonotonic field dependence. A comparison between theoretical and simulation results is excellent for noninteracting particles. Abstract:Due to the application of fluctuating magnetic fields in various scientific disciplines, electronic and magnetic transport properties have attracted attention. In this paper, from a statistical mechanics point of view, a Brownian motion model of charged particles characterized by a generalized Langevin equation (GLE) with fluctuating magnetic fields and Ornstein–Uhlenbeck(OU) noise has been studied in detail. The analytic expression for the average particles velocity has been achieved by using the Shapiro-Loginov formular (SLF) and Laplace transform (LT). Furthermore, the exact expressions of the spectral amplification, current density under steady state, as well as relative power absorption have been obtained. Especially, cyclotron resonance, which is relevant in the study of particle physics and physical chemistry, have been further discussed. In addition, the covariance, normalized variance and normalized skewness of charged particle velocity have also been investigated. It is worth pointing out that the fluctuating magnetic field can induce nonlinear resonance behavior of charged particles.

Memory effects in superfluid vortex dynamics

Abstract:The dissipative dynamics of a vortex line in a superfluid is investigated within the frame of a non-Markovian quantal Brownian motion model. Our starting point is a recently proposed interaction Hamiltonian between the vortex and the superfluid quasiparticle excitations, which is generalized to incorporate the effect of scattering from fermion impurities ($^3$He atoms). Thus, a non-Markovian equation of motion for the mean value of the vortex position operator is derived within a weak-coupling approximation. Such an equation is shown to yield, in the Markovian and elastic scattering limits, a $^3$He contribution to the longitudinal friction coefficient equivalent to that arising from the Rayfield-Reif formula. Simultaneous Markov and elastic scattering limits are found, however, to be incompatible, since an unexpected breakdown of the Markovian approximation is detected at low cyclotron frequencies. Then, a non-Markovian expression for the longitudinal friction coefficient is derived and computed as a function of temperature and $^3$He concentration. Such calculations show that cyclotron frequencies within the range 0.01$-$0.03 ps$^{-1}$ yield a very good agreement to the longitudinal friction figures computed from the Iordanskii and Rayfield-Reif formulas for pure $^4$He, up to temperatures near 1 K. A similar performance is found for nonvanishing $^3$He concentrations, where the comparison is also shown to be very favorable with respect to the available experimental data. Memory effects are shown to be weak and increasing with temperature and concentration.
