Abstract:Herein, Fe(III)-doped g-C3N4 (FeCN) could efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which was prepared via a facile one-pot synthesis approach. The physical and chemical properties of the samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, and BET. The FeCN/PMS system displayed high activity in the degradation of several contaminants, including cationic rhodamine B (RhB), anionic methyl orange (MO), and neutral phenol. Compared to SO4·−-based advanced oxidation technology, the FeCN/PMS system is a nonradical process; high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV = O) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS). The effects of various operational parameters, such as catalyst loading, peroxymonosulfate dosage, substrate concentration, and pH, on the performance of the FeCN6/PMS system were also studied. FeCN6/PMS exhibited acceptable degradation of RhB in the presence of coexisting anions (i.e., Cl−, SO42−, NO3−, and H2PO4−) and natural organic matter (NOM).

Abstract:A new composite catalyst, i.e., Fe doped g-C3N4/graphite (Fe-CN/G), was successfully constructed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient phenolic compounds (i.e., p-chlorophenol, 4-CP) degradation in the pH range of 3-10. The optimized Fe-CN/G, i.e., Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0), was fabricated at the dosage of 3.75 mmol FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O, 5.0 g dicyandiamide, and 5.0 mmol glucose. Fe complexed in the nitrogen pots of Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0) was demonstrated to be the primary active site for PMS activation, and the introduction of graphite favored the exposure of more accessible active sites in Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0), suggesting a synergistic effect between the Fe and graphite of Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0) on 4-CP degradation. Multiple experiments confirmed that sulfate radical (SO4 center dot(-)), hydroxyl radical (HO center dot), singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and superoxide radical (O-2 center dot(-)) exerted negligible contribution on 4-CP degradation. The in-situ Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANEX) analysis revealed a redox cycle of Fe in PMS/Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0), suggesting the formation of high-valent iron-oxo species ( Fe-IV=O) was responsible for 4-CP degradation. In addition, PMS/Fe-3.75-CN/G(5.0) exhibited acceptable degradation of 4-CP in the presence of coexisting anions and natural organic matters (NOM). Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Iron(iii)-Tetraamidomacrocyclic Ligand for Degradation of Organic Pollutants Via High-Valent Iron-Oxo Complex

Abstract:Herein, we proposed a new catalytic oxidation system, i.e., iron(III)-tetraamidomacrocyclic ligand (Fem(III)-TAML) mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), for highly efficient organic degradation using pchlorophenol (4-CP) as a model one. PMS/Fem(III)-TAML is capable of degrading 4-CP completely in 9 min at the initial 4-CP of 50 mu M and pH = 7, whereas the recently explored system, H2O2/Fem(III)-TAML, could only result in similar to 22% 4-CP removal in 20 min under otherwise identical conditions. More attractively, inorganic anions (i.e.,cl(-), SO42- , NO3-, and HCO3-) exhibited insignificant effect on 4-CP degradation, and the negative effect of natural organic matters (NOM) on the degradation of 4-CP in PMS/Fe-III-TAML is much weaker than the sulfate radical-based oxidation process (PMS/Co2+). Combined with in-situ XANES spectra, UV-visible spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, and radical quenching experiments, high-valent iron-oxo complex (Fe-Iv(O)TAML) instead of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)), sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot-) was the key active species responsible for 4-CP degradation. The formation rate (k(I)) and consumption rate (k(II)) of the Fe-Iv(O)TAML in PMS/Fem(III)-TAML were pH-dependent in the range of 6.0-11.5. As expected, increasing the Fem(III)-TAML and PMS dosage resulted in a higher steady-state concentration of Fe-Iv(O)TAML and enhanced the 4-CP degradation accordingly. In addition, the oxidation capacity of PMS was almost totally utilized in PMS/Fem(III)-TAML for 4-CP oxidation due to the two-electron abstraction from 4-CP by one PMS. We believe this study will shed new light on effective PMS activation by Fe-ligand complexes to efficiently degrade organic contaminants via nonradical pathway. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Nonradical species with great resistance to interference have shown great advantages in complex wastewater treatment. Herein, a novel system constructed by biodegradable tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrinatoiron (III) (Fe III -TCPP) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was proposed for facile decontamination. Nonradical pathway is observed in Fe III -TCPP/PMS, where 1 O 2 and high-valent iron-oxo species play dominant roles. The genres and valence of high-valent iron-oxo species, including iron (IV)-oxo porphyrin radical-cationic species [OFe IV -TCPP •+ ] and iron (IV)-hydroxide species [Fe IV -TCPP(OH)], are ascertained, along with their generation mechanism. The axial ligand on the iron axial site affects the ground spin state of Fe III -TCPP, further influencing the thermodynamic reaction pathway of active species. With trace catalyst in micromoles, Fe III -TCPP exhibits high efficiency by degrading bisphenol S (BPS) completely within 5 min, while Co 2+ /PMS can only achieve a maximum of 26.2% under identical condition. Beneficial from nonradical pathways, Fe III -TCPP/PMS demonstrates a wide pH range of 3–10 and exhibits minimal sensitivity to interference of concomitant materials. BPS is primarily eliminated through β-scission and hydroxylation. Specifically, 1 O 2 electrophilically attacks the C–S bond of BPS, while high-valent iron-oxo species interacts with BPS through an oxygen-bound mechanism. This study provides novel insights into efficient activation of PMS by iron porphyrin, enabling the removal of refractory pollutants through nonradical pathway.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have become promising water treatment technologies in recent years. The redox cycle between transitional metals in heterogeneous catalysis is essential for continuous activation of PMS and efficient removal of pollutants. In this work, we prepared Fe 3 O 4 using precipitation method and subsequently added Ni aqueous solution to synthesize Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides show efficient PMS activation ability, causing the degradation of 96.8 % trichloroethylene (TCE) after 40 min with the dosage of Fe, Ni and PMS at 0.2, 0.1 and 0.2 mM, respectively. The catalyst concentration normalized TCE degradation rate constant of Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides/PMS system reaches 1.48 L g −1 min −1 . Nonradical pathway is dominant at the initial stage of the reaction which generates high-valent metals, SO 5 • − and indirectly produces 1 O 2 . 1 O 2 and dissolved O 2 together participate in the O 2 cycling, •OH generation, and electron transfer involving the reduction of trivalent metals. Divalent metals react with PMS to generate strong oxidative •OH and SO 4 • − through radical pathway in later stage. TCE is degraded and dechlorinated by multiple reactive species in Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides/PMS system. The optimum Ni/Fe ratio of catalysts under the studied conditions was 0.50. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides show high reactivity and stability in real water matrices, demonstrating Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides are promising catalysts for PMS activation to degrade pollutants in contaminated water.

Abstract:Herein, Iron anchored in carbon-nitrogen nanosheets (Fe-CNx) catalysts were synthesized successfully through one-step in situ pyrolysis for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfachloropyridazine (SCP). FeCN800/PMS could realized the complete removal SCP in 20 min (kobs = 0.644 min-1). Its reaction rates were 214.7 times higher than that in PMS system. Additionally, Fe-CN800 could effectively activate PMS in a wide range of pH (3-10.6). The relationship between the content of Fe-CNx functional groups and the catalytic performance indicated that C = O and Fe-N4 were the main active sites. The structural-functional association between active sites and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was revealed by regression analysis and Density Functional Theory calculations, indicating that C = O stimulated 1O2 production, while HV-Fe was derived from C = O and Fe-N4. Moreover, the PMS activation was enhanced via electron transfer between Fe(II) and Fe(III). Based on LCMS and Fukui index, the action of ROS during SCP decomposition was analyzed, and proposed three probable pathways for SCP degradation. The transformation pattern of the structure and toxicity of the intermediates was revealed via T.E.S.T. analysis, and plant growth experiments showed that the effect of the treated SCP solution on Brassica napus significantly decreased. Finally, Fe-CN800 exhibited excellent stability, with SCP removal remaining above 95 % in five cycles and Fe leaching concentrations lower than ones which have been reported catalysts. This work provided new insights for the precise design of more efficient PMS catalysts. It will provide a fundamental basis for the practical application in wastewater treatment based on PMS-AOPs.
Enhanced degradation of 4-Cholophenol by activation of peroxymonosulfate with Fe-MOF@Mn 2 O 3 : Performance and mechanism

Abstract:There has been growing attention in the combination of metal oxide nanoparticles with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the synergistically intensified catalytic activity. Herein, functional 2 O 3 composites were synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for 4-Cholophenol (4-CP) degradation via a hydrothermal and calcination method. Under the reaction parameters of 2 mM PMS, 0.2 g/L catalyst dosage, and pH 7.0, 91.4% of 4-CP (10 mg/L) could effectively be degraded within 60 min (2.2-fold increase in reaction rate constant compared with pure Mn 2 O 3 ). The excellent degradation performance of 2 O 3 /PMS system was attributed to the surface hydroxyl and synergistic effect between iron and manganese. Quenching reaction and EPR analysis revealed both sulfate (•SO 4 - ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were responsible for 4-CP degradation. The 2 O 3 composite exhibited intensive catalytic capability as well as electron transfer efficiency according to the electrochemical measurements. Meanwhile, the possible degradation pathways were proposed by analyzing intermediates via LC-MS detection. The results indicates that the 2 O 3 /PMS system is effective and adaptable for the treatment of 4-CP in different water conditions.

Peroxymonosulfate activated by natural porphyrin derivatives for rapid degradation of organic pollutants via singlet oxygen and high-valent iron-oxo species

Abstract:The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by sodium ferric chlorophyllin (SFC), a natural porphyrin derivative extracted from chlorophyll-rich substances, was systematically investigated for facile degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). SFC/PMS is capable of degrading 97.5% of BPA in the first 10 min with the initial BPA concentration of 20 mg/L and pH = 3, whereas conventional Fe2+/PMS could only remove 22.6% of BPA under identical conditions. It demonstrates a prominent flexibility to a broad pH range of 3-11 with complete pollutant degradation. A remarkable tolerance toward concomitant high concentration of inorganic anions (100 mM) was also observed, among which (bi)carbonates can even accelerate the degradation. The nonradical oxidation species, including high-valent iron-oxo porphyrin species and 1O2, are identified as dominant species. Particularly, the generation and participation of 1O2 in the reaction is evidenced by experimental and theoretical methods, which is vastly different from the previous study. The specific activation mechanism is unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The results shed light on effective PMS activation by iron (III) porphyrin and the proposed natural porphyrin derivative would be a promising candidate for efficient abatement of recalcitrant pollutants toward complicated aqueous media in wastewater treatment.
Mediated Peroxymonosulfate Activation at the Single Atom Fe-N3O1 Sites: Synergistic Degradation of Antibiotics by Two Non-Radical Pathways

Abstract:The activation of persulfates to degrade refractory organic pollutants is a hot issue in advanced oxidation right now. Here, it is reported that single-atom Fe-incorporated carbon nitride (Fe-CN-650) can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Through some characterization techniques and DFT calculation, it is proved that Fe single atoms in Fe-CN-650 exist mainly in the form of Fe-N3O1 coordination, and Fe-N3O1 exhibited better affinity for PMS than the traditional Fe-N4 structure. The degradation rate constant of SMX in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system reached 0.472 min-1, and 90.80% of SMX can still be effectively degraded within 10 min after five consecutive recovery cycles. The radical quenching experiment and electrochemical analysis confirm that the pollutants are mainly degraded by two non-radical pathways through 1O2 and Fe(IV)═O induced at the Fe-N3O1 sites. In addition, the intermediate products of SMX degradation in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system show toxicity attenuation or non-toxicity. This study offers valuable insights into the design of carbon-based single-atom catalysts and provides a potential remediation technology for the optimum activation of PMS to disintegrate organic pollutants.

Abstract:A case is described in which there was a high index of suspicion for traumatic aortic disruption. Because angiography was equivocal, transesophageal echocardiography was performed, and interpreted as showing a noncircumferential aortic tear. At thoracotomy, however, no tear was seen. The false positive interpretation was caused by a crescent-shaped atherosclerotic plaque.

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalytic systems for eliminating contaminants effectively in water has received a lot of attention. However, the complexity of practical wastewater poses a challenge for degrading organic pollutants. Non-radical active species with strong resistance to interference have shown great advantages in degrading organic pollutants under complex aqueous conditions. Herein, a novel system was constructed by Fe(dpa)Cl 2 (FeL, dpa = N, N' -(4-nitro-1,2-phenylene) dipicolinamide) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The mechanism study verified that the FeL/PMS system has high efficiency in producing high-valent iron-oxo and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to degrade various organic pollutants. In addition, the chemical bonding between PMS and FeL was elucidated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The FeL/PMS system could remove 96% Reactive Red 195 (RR195) in 2 min, which was much higher than other systems involved in this study. More attractively, the FeL/PMS system demonstrated general resistance to interference from common anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− ), humic acid (HA) and pH changes and were thus compatible with various natural waters. This work provides a new approach for producing non-radical active species, which is a promising catalytic system for water treatment.

Abstract:In order to develop efficient and green catalyst for organic pollutants removal, magnetic carbon supported Prussian blue nanocomposite Fe3O4@C/PB was prepared for the first time. The performance of Fe3O4@C/PB in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was investigated. 2,4-DCP could be effectively degraded under the "Fe3O4@C/PB + PMS" system within a broad pH range of 2-9. Without pH adjustment (pH 3), 2,4-DCP (20 mg/L) was completely degraded in 50 min along with a 70% removal of TOC; while the required time for complete degradation of 2,4-DCP was shortened to 40 min under initial solution pH at 7. Fe3O4@C/PB could also activate PMS for the degradation of phenol, Acid Orange II, Reactive brilliant red X-3B, Rhodamine B and Methylene blue. The degradation rates higher than 95% could be achieved for all these contaminants within the time scale of 15-60 min. The studies of radical-quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radicals (O2-), rather than sulfate (SO4-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals, were the dominant species responsible for the oxidation of organic pollutants. The plausible mechanism of the catalytic degradation was proposed and the enhanced activity of Fe3O4@C/PB was assumed to be related to the increased electron transfer owing to the synergic effect between the magnetic carbon and the mixed-valence units in PB. Fe3O4@C/PB is promising in wastewater treatment owing to its high efficiency, excellent stability and reusability, environmental friendliness and magnetic separability.
Iron-Based Dual Active Site-Mediated Peroxymonosulfate Activation for the Degradation of Emerging Organic Pollutants

Abstract:It is still a challenge to synthesize highly efficient and stable catalysts for the Fenton-like reaction. In this study, we constructed an integrated catalyst with highly dispersed iron-based dual active sites, in which Fe2N and single-atom Fe (SA-Fe) were embedded into nitrogen- and oxygen-co-doped graphitic carbon (Fe-N-O-GC-350). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) confirmed the coordination structure of iron, and line combination fitting (LCF) demonstrated the coexistence of Fe2N and SA-Fe with percentages of 75 and 25%, respectively. Iron-based dual active sites endowed Fe-N-O-GC-350 with superior catalytic activity to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as evidenced by the fast degradation rate of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (0.24 min(-1)) in the presence of 0.4 mM PMS and 0.1 g/L Fe-N-O-GC-350. Unlike the reported singlet oxygen and high-valent iron oxo-mediated degradation induced by the SA-Fe catalyst, both surface-bound reactive species and singlet oxygen contributed to SMX degradation, while surface-bound reactive species dominated. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation indicated that Fe2N and SA-Fe enhanced the adsorption of PMS, which played a key role in PMS activation. The Fe-N-O-GC-350/PMS system had resistance to the interference of common inorganic anions and high oxidation capacity to recalcitrant organic contaminants. This study elucidated the important role of Fe2N in PMS activation and provide a clue to design rationally catalysts with iron-based dual active sites to activate PMS for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants.

Abstract:Degradation efficiency and catalyst stability are crucial issues in the control of organic compounds in wastewater by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, it is difficult for catalysts used in AOPs to have both high catalytic activity and high stability. Combined with the excellent activity of cobalt/copper oxides and the good stability of carbon, highly dispersed cobalt-oxide and copper-oxide nanoparticles embedded in carbon-matrix composites (Co-Cu@C) were prepared for the catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The catalysts exhibited a stable structure and excellent performance for complete phenol degradation (20 mg L−1) within 5 min in the Cu-Co@C-5/PMS system, as well as low metal-ion-leaching rates and great reusability. Moreover, a quenching test and an EPR analysis revealed that ·OH, O2·−, and 1O2 were generated in the Co-Cu@C/PMS system for phenol degradation. The possible mechanism for the radical and non-radical pathways in the activation of the PMS by the Co-Cu@C was proposed. The present study provides a new strategy with which to construct heterostructures for environmentally friendly and efficient PMS-activation catalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is of great importance for the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. Herein, magnetic Fe3O4@CuOx was constructed to activate PMS for the removal of triclosan (TCS). Our results demonstrated that introducing Fe3O4 not only promoted the dispersion of CuO but also improved the electron donor capacity of Cu and promoted the redox cycle of Fe, thus enhancing effective activation of PMS. Compared with pure Fe3O4 or CuO, the iron-copper interaction of the bimetallic composites facilitated the production of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), and thus showed excellent adaptability to various inorganic anions and actual wastewater. Of note, O-2 may be involved in the reaction to generate superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)), which facilitated TCS removal in case of lower PMS dosage (40 mu M). Elevating PMS concentration to 500 mu M, a theoretical value for 20 mu M TCS mineralization, enabled TCS to be deeply mineralized in ultrapure water (86% removal of total organic carbon (TOC)). Further increasing PMS concentration could achieve satisfactory mineralization in wastewater samples with much higher TOC background values. Overall, this study provides a new insight into the mechanism in Fe3O4 @CuO/PMS system with low oxidant dosage, which is beneficial to improve the practical application of SR-AOPs.
Nonradical Oxidation of Pollutants with Single-Atom-Fe(III)-Activated Persulfate: Fe(V) Being the Possible Intermediate Oxidant

Abstract:When applied for the remediation of polluted water/soil, peroxydisulfate (PDS) usually needs to be effectively activated to generate sulfate radical as the working oxidant. However, a significant part of the oxidation capacity of PDS is lost in this way because sulfate radical unselectively reacts with most of the substances in water/soil. PDS activation without generating radicals is preferred to maximize its oxidation capacity for targeted pollutants. Here, we report that single-atom Fe(III)- and nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe–N–C) can efficiently activate PDS to selectively remove some organic pollutants following an unreported nonradical pathway. The single-atom Fe(III) coordinated with pyridinic N atoms was confirmed to be the active site for the catalytic decomposition of PDS. However, the PDS decomposition did not produce radicals or reactive oxygen species. It is very likely that the coordinated Fe(III) is readily converted to Fe(V) through two-electron abstraction by PDS, and Fe(V) is responsible for the selective degradation of organic pollutants. The PDS/Fe–N–C-coupled process utilizes more oxidation capacity of PDS than both radical oxidation and other reported nonradical oxidation like PDS/CuO under the same experimental conditions. Abstract:Novel catalysts with multiple active sites and rapid separation are required to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Therefore, an integrated catalyst for PMS activation was developed by directly forming Co-Fe Prussian blue analogs on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam (NF), which were subsequently phosphorylated to obtain cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide (FeCoP@NF). The FeCoP@NF/PMS system efficiently degraded dye wastewater within 20 min. The system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation over a broad pH range and at high dye concentrations due to the presence of unique asymmetrically charged Coa+ and Pb- dual active sites formed by cobalt phosphides within FeCoP@NF. These active sites significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of PMS. The activation mechanism of PMS involves phosphorylation that accelerates electron transfer from FeCoP@NF to PMS, to generate SO4·-, ·OH, O2·-, and 1O2 active species. Three-dimensional FeCoP@NF could be readily recycled and showed good stability for PMS activation. In this study, a highly efficient, stable, and readily recyclable integrated catalyst was developed. This catalyst system effectively resolves the separation and recovery issues associated with conventional powder catalysts and has a wide range of potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Sulfate radical−based advanced oxidation processes have received considerable attentions in the remediation of organic pollutants due to their high oxidation ability. In this study, a novel Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst was fabricated and employed as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator to generate SO4•− for phenol degradation. The Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst exhibited a good catalytic performance at a wide pH range of 3.4 to 10.8, and 100% phenol (20 mg/L) was removed within 50-min reaction under optimal conditions with 0.2 g/L catalyst and 2.0 g/L PMS at room temperature. The transformation products and total organic carbon during the degradation process were also determined. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra revealed that sulfate radical (SO4•−) rather than other species such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) was primarily responsible for phenol degradation in the Co3O4/CeO2/PMS system, and a rational mechanism was proposed. Moreover, the recycling experiments as well as low cobalt leaching concentration manifested satisfactory reusability and stability. The effects of various inorganic anions and natural organic matter in real water matrix on phenol oxidation were further evaluated. We believe that the Co3O4/CeO2 composites have promising applications of PMS activation for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this work, a series of porous Fe-doped g-C3N4 (Fe-CN) were facilely synthesized by a solid state grinding method followed by heat treatment process with the aid of thiourea as a pore-forming agent and auxiliary dispersant of Fe, aiming to construct efficient catalysts for 2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (DNBP) degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The feature of this synthesis method is the easy creation of heterogeneous catalysts with highly dispersed metal sites anchored in porous architecture of g-C3N4 under solvent-free conditions. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by various techniques, such as XRD, FT-IR, XPS, HRTEM, and BET measurements. Fe was found to be coordinated with the N atoms in the skeleton of g-C3N4. Fe-CN exhibited promoted catalytic activities in PMS activation for oxidative degradation of DNBP compared to pristine g-C3N4 with the highest DNBP degradation efficiency at 12.5%Fe-CN under the optimal conditions with long-term structural stability characteristics. It was demonstrated that the reactive oxygen species including SO4•−, •OH and FeIV=O exerted contribution on DNBP degradation via both radical and non-radical mechanisms, but a more contribution of FeIV=O was observed. A reasonable catalytic mechanism and degradation pathways of DNBP in the 12.5%Fe-CN/PMS system were proposed. This study puts forward an innovative strategy for the design and development of promising heterogeneous Fe-CN catalysts for PMS-based wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The abundant and environmentally friendly metal iron (Fe) is an excellent candidate to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the oxidative decomposition of organic pollutants. However, Fe-based activators have disadvantages of high efficiency only in a narrow pH range and easily generated Fe-sludge. Therefore, developing wide pH range efficient and stable Fe-based PS activators is needed. In this study, iron–nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) activators were prepared using covalent organic frameworks containing homogeneous micropores and high porosity as a precursor. The Fe-N x -rich activator showed an outstanding activity and a high stability in the heterogeneously activated PMS system. It found that the 10 mg/L paracetamol (PCT) could be degraded completely within 5 min when adding 30 mg/L activator and 3 mM PMS. Furthermore, the system shows good performance in an extensive buffer pH range (2.6–10.67). The quenching experiments and intermediate product tests supported that the high-valent iron-oxo species is the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this system, and the designed experiments confirmed that Fe-N as the active site that in charge of activating PMS. This work provides insights for improving the activation efficiency and expanding the pH working range of iron-based catalysts in the field of advanced persulfate oxidation.
