Abstract:The wall of the aorta consists of three layers: a thin endothelium, a broad muscular media and thin outer adventitia. Most dissections develop when longstanding weakening of the media reduces support for the intima which splits. Blood then tears into the media raising a dissection flap which divides the artery into a true and false lumen ( Fig. 1 ). The true lumen carries the forward flow of blood, but in the false lumen, flow is either delayed, absent or reversed ( Fig. 2 ).
