Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status of patients presenting with small bowel obstruction (SBO), along with associated nutritional interventions and clinical outcomes. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: 131 UK hospitals with acute surgical services. Participants: 2069 adult patients with a diagnosis of SBO were included in this study. The mean age was 67.0 years and 54.7% were female. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes recorded included: major complications (composite of in-hospital mortality, reoperation, unplanned intensive care admission and 30-day readmission), complications arising from surgery (anastomotic leak, wound dehiscence), infection (pneumonia, surgical site infection, intra-abdominal infection, urinary tract infection, venous catheter infection), cardiac complications, venous thromboembolism and delirium. Results: Postoperative adhesions were the most common cause of SBO (49.1%). Early surgery (<24 hours postadmission) took place in 30.0% of patients, 22.0% underwent delayed operation and 47.9% were managed non-operatively. Malnutrition as stratified by Nutritional Risk Index was common, with 35.7% at moderate risk and 5.7% at severe risk of malnutrition. Dietitian review occurred in just 36.4% and 55.9% of the moderate and severe risk groups. In the low risk group, 30.3% received nutritional intervention compared with 40.7% in moderate risk group and 62.7% in severe risk group. In comparison to the low risk group, patients who were at severe or moderate risk of malnutrition had 4.2 and 2.4 times higher unadjusted risk of in-hospital mortality, respectively. Propensity-matched analysis found no difference in outcomes based on use or timing of parenteral nutrition. Conclusions: Malnutrition on admission is associated with worse outcomes in patients with SBO, and marked variation in management of malnutrition was observed. Future trials should focus on identifying effective and cost-effective nutritional interventions in SBO.
Management of adhesive small bowel obstruction: the results of a large retrospective study

Abstract:Background: Postoperative adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a frequent cause of hospital admission in a surgical department. Emergency surgery is needed in a majority of patients with bowel ischemia or peritonitis; most adhesive SBO can be managed nonoperatively. Many studies have investigated benefits of using oral water-soluble contrast to manage adhesive SBO. Treatment recommendations are still controversial. Methods: We conducted an observational retrospective monocentric study to test our protocol of management of SBO using Gastrografin®, enrolling 661 patients from January 2008 to December 2021. An emergency surgery was performed in patients with abdominal tenderness, peritonitis, hemodynamic instability, major acute abdominal pain despite gastric decompression, or CT scan findings of small bowel ischemia. Nonoperative management was proposed to patients who did not need emergency surgery. A gastric decompression with a nasogastric tube was immediately performed in the emergency room for four hours, then the nasogastric tube was clamped and 100 ml of nondiluted oral Gastrografin® was administered. The nasogastric tube remained clamped for eight hours and an abdominal plain radiograph was taken after that period. Emergency surgery was then performed in patients who had persistent abdominal pain, onset of abdominal tenderness or vomiting during the clamping test, or if the abdominal plain radiograph did not show contrast product in the colon or the rectum. In other cases, the nasogastric tube was removed and a progressive refeeding was introduced, starting with liquid diet. Results: Seventy-eight percent of patients with SBO were managed nonoperatively, including 183 (36.0%) who finally required surgery. Delayed surgery showed a complete small bowel obstruction in all patients who failed the conservative treatment, and a small bowel resection was necessary in 19 patients (10.0%): among them, only 5 had intestinal ischemia. Conclusions: Our protocol is safe, and it is a valuable strategy in order to accelerate the decision-making process for management of adhesive SBO, with a percentage of risk of late small bowel resection for ischemia esteemed at 0.9%.
Substrate degradation by the proteasome: A single-molecule kinetic analysis

Abstract:Single-molecule assay of ubiquitylation Many biological processes in cells are regulated by ubiquitin peptides that are attached to proteins. Measurement of single fluorescent molecules in cell extracts can be used to trace the kinetics of such reactions. Lu et al. refined assay conditions to follow ubiquitination by an E3 ubiquitin ligase (see the Perspective by Komander). They visualized the activity of the anaphase-promoting complex (APC), a ubiquitin ligase critical for control of the cell division cycle. The processive initial reaction catalyzed by the APC was replaced by slower reactions. The results show how small, commonly occurring recognition motifs can guide specific and highly controlled enzymatic events. In a companion paper, Lu et al. explored how the number and arrangement of added ubiquitin chains affected the interaction of ubiquitylated proteins with the proteasome (a protein complex that recognizes ubiquitylated proteins and degrades them). The extent of ubiquitylation determined the strength of interaction of a substrate protein with the proteasome, and the arrangement of the ubiquitin chains determined the movement of the protein into the proteasome and thus the rate of degradation. [Also see Perspective by Komander] INTRODUCTION Protein degradation, mediated by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), plays a critical and complementary role to transcription, splicing, and translation in the control of gene expression. Effective regulation of the UPS relies on the specificity of substrate recognition, which is conferred largely by the upstream ubiquitylation process. As a specific example, the anaphase-promoting complex (APC) acting on a series of substrates promotes waves of ubiquitylation and degradation, leading to key transitions in the cell cycle. However, in this cascade the proteasome itself also plays a role in the specificity of degradation. There have been various efforts to characterize this role, leading to a commonly held view that a substrate protein must be conjugated with a chain of at least four ubiquitins to be recognized by the proteasome. Yet mass spectrometry studies show that ubiquitin chains on APC substrates (such as cyclin B) contain, on average, only two ubiquitins. But these can have complex ubiquitin configurations created by the multiplicity of ubiquitylated lysine residues. Therefore, the tetraubiquitin chain selection rule may not be generally applicable, and the mechanism by which the proteasome recognizes substrates is still shrouded in mystery. RATIONALE The multiple lysines on a substrate and on ubiquitin itself generate a large number of possible ubiquitin configurations. To understand the “ubiquitin code” that must be read by the proteasome and converted into a rate of substrate degradation, we examined the kinetics of degradation with defined ubiquitin configurations by conjugating preformed ubiquitin chains on substrate molecules. Further, to reveal the molecular basis through which some ubiquitin configurations promote more efficient degradation than others, we investigated the degradation process using single-molecule (SM) methods that are capable of identifying transient intermediates and measuring their kinetic parameters and sensitivity to ubiquitin configurations. RESULTS Contrary to the tetraubiquitin chain selection rule, we find that for APC substrates with multiple ubiquitylated lysine residues, diubiquitin chains are more efficient than tetraubiquitin chains in promoting degradation, given the same number of conjugated ubiquitins. Ubiquitin chains are essential for degradation of most substrates. Nevertheless, a multiple monoubiquitylated form of securin, a regulator of chromatid separation, interacts with the proteasome as strongly as securin containing the same number of ubiquitins grouped in chains. By dissecting the degradation process using SM methods, we find that ubiquitin chain structures on substrates promote the passage of a bound substrate into the translocation channel on the proteasome. CONCLUSION This systematic study of synthetically constructed ubiquitylated substrates with defined configurations revealed no simple length threshold for ubiquitin chains for degradation by the proteasome. A distributed array of short ubiquitin chains, as appears naturally on APC substrates, is a superior and perhaps optimal signal for degradation; this conclusion will most likely extend to substrates of other E3 ligases. The rate of degradation is an aggregate of two sequential processes: substrate binding and kinetic postbinding events. In the past, it was widely assumed that ubiquitin chains mostly promoted binding to the proteasome. Our SM studies demonstrate that the strength of interaction with the proteasome, for substrates with multiple ubiquitylated lysines, is largely determined by the total number of ubiquitins and is less sensitive to ubiquitin chain configurations. For most substrates, binding alone is not sufficient for degradation. Rather, degradation depends strongly on a process that initiates passage into the substrate translocation channel; this transition, in contrast to binding, is determined by the particular configuration of ubiquitin chains. Key transitions in the degradation of ubiquitylated substrates by the proteasome. A polyubiquitylated substrate molecule explores multiple configurations on the proteasome through stochastic binding. Rearrangements of proteasomal subunits, driven by the binding and hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate, allow a deeper engagement of the substrate with the proteasome, when there are appropriate ubiquitin chain structures on the substrate. As a result of this engagement, the substrate or its terminus is moved closer to the substrate entry port, promoting expeditious initiation of translocation and ensuing degradation. To address how the configuration of conjugated ubiquitins determines the recognition of substrates by the proteasome, we analyzed the degradation kinetics of substrates with chemically defined ubiquitin configurations. Contrary to the view that a tetraubiquitin chain is the minimal signal for efficient degradation, we find that distributing the ubiquitins as diubiquitin chains provides a more efficient signal. To understand how the proteasome actually discriminates among ubiquitin configurations, we developed single-molecule assays that distinguished intermediate steps of degradation kinetically. The level of ubiquitin on a substrate drives proteasome-substrate interaction, whereas the chain structure of ubiquitin affects translocation into the axial channel on the proteasome. Together these two features largely determine the susceptibility of substrates for proteasomal degradation.
Utility of Abbreviated Small Bowel Follow Through Study in the Management of Small Bowel Obstruction

Abstract:Introduction: Small bowel obstruction is a common surgical complaint. Most small bowel obstructions are managed successfully nonoperatively. Unanimous guidelines for nonoperative management of small bowel obstruction do not exist. Methods: A standardized protocol for water-soluble contrast administration and abbreviated small bowel follow through imaging was implemented in January of 2021. A retrospective chart review identified 111 patients admitted for SBO from 6/2019 to 9/2019 for a control group. A planned follow-up review identified 158 patients managed according to the new protocol from 3/2021 to 10/2021. The primary outcome was in-hospital length of stay. Standard statistical analyses were performed and pre-specified. Results: Before implementation of the standardized protocol patients that were managed strictly nonoperatively, the mean length of stay (LOS) was 8.3 days. After implementation, the average LOS was 4.8 (P < .0001). Comparatively, patients admitted after protocol implementation were more likely to undergo CT scan with PO contrast on admission (98.1% vs 90.1%; P < .005), undergo NG tube decompression (84.7% vs 68.5%; P < .005), and undergo water-soluble contrast with abbreviated or formal SBFT (75.3% vs 37.8%; P < .0001). Conclusion: Implementation of a standardized protocol utilizing abbreviated SBFT with water-soluble contrast for the management of SBO at our institution resulted in a decrease in the average length of stay for patients definitively managed in a nonoperative fashion.
Prognostic Value of Water-Soluble Contrast Challenge for Nonadhesive Small Bowel Obstruction

Abstract:Background: There is little evidence supporting the use of a water-soluble contrast challenge (WSCC) for conservative management of nonadhesive small bowel obstruction (NASBO). Our objective was to evaluate the prognostic value of the WSCC in a diverse group of patients with NASBO in comparison with patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO). Study design: Retrospective chart review of patients with ASBO or NASBO who underwent a WSCC during a 4-year time period was performed. The primary study endpoint was any intervention for small bowel obstruction during the initial admission or within 30 days of discharge. Results: A total of 106 patients were included, 53 with ASBO (mean age 64 ± 13 years [SD]; 55% women) and 53 with NASBO (mean age 59 ± 13 years [SD]; 57% women). A higher rate of interventions during admission or within 30 days of discharge was seen in patients with NASBO compared with ASBO (24/53 [45%] vs 12/53 [23%]; p = 0.01), including those with colonic transit times of less than 36 hours (14/41 [34%] vs 5/43 [12%]; p = 0.01). Using multivariate analysis, transit time greater than 36 hours remained an independent predictor of an intervention during admission or within 30 days of discharge (p < 0.001, odds ratio 19.0), after controlling for the type of small bowel obstruction. Conclusions: A majority of patients with NASBO were successfully managed conservatively during a 30-day period, supporting the use of WSCC in patients with NASBO; however, patients with NASBO had a higher rate of interventions during admission or within 30 days of discharge.
[Progressive mental deterioration after radiotherapy in adult patients with brain tumors].

Abstract:We report a study on changes of mental function in twenty five adult patients with cerebral low-grade gliomas after radiotherapy. None of them had shown mental deterioration before radiotherapy nor tumor recurrence after radiotherapy. Radiation was given at a dose of 48 to 78 Gy (mean: 54.2 Gy). Patients were assigned for mental functional levels according to Karnofsky performance scale (KPS) after radiotherapy. Ten patients (40%) were normal. Seven patients (28%) showed moderate disabilities and 8 (32%) severe disabilities. The median interval time from radiotherapy to the onset of mental deterioration was 2.5 years in the moderate group and 1.6 years in the severe group. CT findings in severe group demonstrated severe brain atrophy and diffuse low density in the white matter after radiotherapy. The risk factors responsible for progressive mental deterioration after radiotherapy may be radiation site and size (whole frontal lobe), total dose (over 60 Gy) and patients age at the time of radiotherapy (over 60 yrs).
Implementation of an adhesive small bowel obstruction protocol using low-osmolar water soluble contrast and the impact on patient outcomes

Abstract:Background: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common condition leading to numerous hospital admissions and operations. Standardized care of adhesive SBO patients has not been widely implemented in hospital systems. Methods: A prospective cohort of SBO patients was compared to a historical cohort of SBO patients after implementation of a SBO protocol using evidence-based guidelines and Omnipaque, a low-osmolar water soluble contrast. Patients without a history of abdominal surgery were excluded and data was collected through chart review. Results: Univariate analyses demonstrated a decrease in both LOS by 1.35 days and in the proportion of patients receiving surgery (37% vs 25%; p < 0.05). There was a decrease in time to surgery, rate of SBR, and rate of complications, yet an increase in readmission, although these findings were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Utilizing an evidence-based SBO protocol can lead to shorter LOS and may result in fewer operations for adhesive SBO patients.

Abstract:This paper presents a new detection approach to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification. It is called color space fusion method. MRI produces a sequence of multiple spectral images of tissues with a variety of contrasts using three magnetic resonance parameters, spin-lattice (T1), spin-spin (T2) and dual echo-echo proton density (PD) as signals impinging upon the color space RGB. Therefore, the fusion method and the improved K-means algorithm can be applied. A series of experiments are conducted and compared for performance evaluation. The results show that the proposed method is a promising and effective technique for MR image classification.

Abstract:Background: Malignant small bowel obstruction has a poor prognosis and is associated with multiple related symptoms. The optimal treatment approach is often unclear. We aimed to compare surgical versus non-surgical management with the aim to determine the optimal approach for managing malignant bowel obstruction. Methods: S1316 was a pragmatic comparative effectiveness trial done within the National Cancer Trials Network at 30 hospital and cancer research centres in the USA, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Participants had an intra-abdominal or retroperitoneal primary cancer confirmed via pathological report and malignant bowel disease; were aged 18 years or older with a Zubrod performance status 0-2 within 1 week before admission; had a surgical indication; and treatment equipoise. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to surgical or non-surgical treatment using a dynamic balancing algorithm, balancing on primary tumour type. Patients who declined consent for random assignment were offered a prospective observational patient choice pathway. The primary outcome was the number of days alive and out of the hospital (good days) at 91 days. Analyses were based on intention-to-treat linear, logistic, and Cox regression models combining data from both pathways and adjusting for potential confounders. Treatment complications were assessed in all analysed patients in the study. This completed study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02270450. Findings: From May 11, 2015, to April 27, 2020, 221 patients were enrolled (143 [65%] were female and 78 [35%] were male). There were 199 evaluable participants: 49 in the randomised pathway (24 surgery and 25 non-surgery) and 150 in the patient choice pathway (58 surgery and 92 non-surgery). No difference was seen between surgery and non-surgery for the primary outcome of good days: mean 42·6 days (SD 32·2) in the randomised surgery group, 43·9 days (29·5) in the randomised non-surgery group, 54·8 days (27·0) in the patient choice surgery group, and 52·7 days (30·7) in the patient choice non-surgery group (adjusted mean difference 2·9 additional good days in surgical versus non-surgical treatment [95% CI -5·5 to 11·3]; p=0·50). During their initial hospital stay, six participants died, five due to cancer progression (four patients from the randomised pathway, two in each treatment group, and one from the patient choice pathway, in the surgery group) and one due to malignant bowel obstruction treatment complications (patient choice pathway, non-surgery). The most common grade 3-4 malignant bowel obstruction treatment complication was anaemia (three [6%] patients in the randomised pathway, all in the surgical group, and five [3%] patients in the patient choice pathway, four in the surgical group and one in the non-surgical group). Interpretation: In our study, whether patients received a surgical or non-surgical treatment approach did not influence good days during the first 91 days after registration. These findings should inform treatment decisions for patients hospitalised with malignant bowel obstruction. Funding: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Cancer Institute. Prognostic factors to identify resolution of small bowel obstruction without need for operative management: systematic review

Abstract:Objectives: To identify imaging, clinical, and laboratory variables potentially prognostic for surgical management of small bowel obstruction. Methods: Two researchers systematically reviewed indexed literature 2001-2021 inclusive for imaging, clinical, and laboratory variables potentially predictive of surgical management of small bowl obstruction and/or ischaemia at surgery, where performed. Risk of bias was assessed. Contingency tables for variables reported in at least 5 studies were extracted and meta-analysed to identify strong evidence of association with clinical outcomes, across studies. Results: Thirty-one studies were ultimately included, reporting 4638 patients (44 to 313 per study). 11 (35%) studies raised no risk of bias concerns. CT was the modality reported most (29 studies, 94%). Meta-analysis of 21 predictors identified 5 strongly associated with surgical intervention, 3 derived from CT (peritoneal free fluid, odds ratio [OR] 3.24, 95%CI 2.45 to 4.29; high grade obstruction, OR 3.58, 95%CI 2.46 to 5.20; mesenteric inflammation, OR 2.61, 95%CI 1.94 to 3.50; abdominal distension, OR 2.43, 95%CI 1.34 to 4.42; peritonism, OR 3.97, 95%CI 2.67 to 5.90) and one with conservative management (previous abdominopelvic surgery, OR 0.58, 95%CI 0.40 to 0.85). Meta-analysis of 10 predictors identified 3 strongly associated with ischaemia at surgery, 2 derived from CT (peritoneal free fluid, OR 3.49, 95%CI 2.28 to 5.35; bowel thickening, OR 3.26 95%CI 1.91 to 5.55; white cell count, OR 4.76, 95%CI 2.71 to 8.36). Conclusions: Systematic review of patients with small bowel obstruction identified four imaging, three clinical, and one laboratory predictors associated strongly with surgical intervention and/or ischaemia at surgery. Clinical relevance statement: Via systematic review and meta-analysis, we identified imaging, clinical, and laboratory predictors strongly associated with surgical management of small bowel obstruction and/or ischaemia. Multivariable model development to guide management should incorporate these since they display strong evidence of potential utility. Key points: • While multivariable models incorporating clinical, laboratory, and imaging factors could predict surgical management of small bowel obstruction, none are used widely. • Via systematic review and meta-analysis we identified imaging, clinical, and laboratory variables strongly associated with surgical management and/or ischaemia at surgery. • Development of multivariable models to guide management should incorporate these predictors, notably CT scanning, since they display strong evidence of potential utility.
Evaluation of a water-soluble contrast protocol for small bowel obstruction: A southwestern surgical congress multicenter trial

Abstract:Differentiation between SBO that will resolve with supportive measures and those requiring surgery remains challenging. WSC administration may be diagnostic and therapeutic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate use of a SBO protocol using WSC challenge. A protocol was implemented at five tertiary care centers. Demographics, prior surgical history, time to operation, complications, and LOS were analyzed. 283 patients were admitted with SBO; 13% underwent immediate laparotomy; these patients had a median LOS of 7.5 days. The remaining 245 were candidates for WSC challenge. Of those, 80% received contrast. 139 (71%) had contrast passage to the colon. LOS in these patients was 4 days. Sixty-five patients (29%) failed contrast passage within 24 h and underwent surgery. LOS was 9 days. 8% of patients in whom contrast passage was observed at 24 h nevertheless subsequently underwent surgery. 4% of patients who failed WSC challenge did not proceed to surgery. Our multicenter trial revealed that implementation of a WSC protocol may facilitate early recognition of partial from complete obstruction.

Abstract:A small bowel obstruction (SBO) involves partial or complete blockage of the small intestine. Complete high-grade or closed-loop obstructions constitute acute surgical emergencies necessitating urgent intervention to prevent severe complications. Several probable etiologies of SBO have been identified, including malignancy, stool impaction, and inflammatory bowel disease; however, post-surgical adhesion is the most prevalent cause in the developed world. A SBO can be diagnosed clinically after a physical examination, but imaging is needed for surgical assessment and management. Misdiagnosis and inadequate management of SBO can cause several complications, such as intestinal necrosis and perforation. Therefore, when required, rapid diagnosis and surgical intervention are critical to avoiding mortality. Computer tomography (CT) and small bowel follow-through (SBFT) are widely utilized imaging modalities for confirmatory diagnosis of SBO. This case series features three patients who had exploratory laparotomies following extensive clinical evaluations and a radiologically confirmed diagnosis of SBO. All three cases involved numerous surgeries. The patients presented with severe abdominal discomfort and received surgical intervention after a CT scan confirmed the diagnosis and conservative therapy failed. In this case, all patients had different presentations but responded adequately to the same treatment modalities with no postoperative complications.
Clinico-Epidemiological Analysis of Small Bowel Obstruction in Adults at a Tertiary Care Center in India

Abstract:Background: Acute small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency. The study aims to provide a comprehensive clinical-epidemiological description of SBO in adults at a tertiary care center in western India. Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2020 to June 2022 and enrolled 88 SBO patients requiring surgical intervention. After adequately resuscitating the patients, various surgical procedures were performed based on the intraoperative conditions of the bowel. Patients were assessed postoperatively for the duration of their hospital stay, postoperative complications, and surgical recovery. Results: There was a male preponderance (n=55), with a median age of 50 (18-90) years. Abdominal discomfort was the most frequent symptom, necessitating a hospital visit (97.9%, n= 86), followed by nausea (85.2%, n= 75), constipation (78.1%, n=69), and abdominal distension (51.1%, n=45). Ileal strictures (18.2%, n=16) were the most common etiology, followed by postoperative adhesions (14.8%, n=13) and bands (13.6%, n=12), of which 76.4% (n=9) had past surgical history. Resection and anastomosis were the most frequently performed surgical interventions in this study (36.4%, n=32), followed by stoma creation (27.3%, n=24) and adhesiolysis (17%, n=15). The postoperative 30-day mortality of 11.36% (n=10) was noted, which could be ascribed to the elderly population with comorbidity, postoperative complications, and who required extended stay in the critical care unit. Conclusion: Benign ileal stricture was the most common cause of acute SBO in the emergency. Prompt and timely diagnosis combined with a multidisciplinary approach and effective management can improve outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality in adult patients with SBO.

Abstract:The temporal degradation of the Belousov-Zhabotinskii substrates lactic acid, pyruvic acid, bromo- and dibromo pyruvic acid is investigated. The only final product of non-brominated substrates is acetic acid. From brominated educts only brominated acetic acids result. The concentrations of the stable products are determined as a function of time. The gross reactions are mainly based on simple consecutive first order reactions. For the pyruvic acid rate constants are determined.

Abstract:Terrestrial opossums use their semiprehensile tail for grasping nesting materials as opposed to arboreal maneuvering. We relate the development of this adaptive behavior with ontogenetic changes in myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform expression from 21 days to adulthood. Monodelphis domestica is expected to demonstrate a progressive ability to flex the distal tail up to age 7 mo, when it should exhibit routine nest construction. We hypothesize that juvenile stages (3-7 mo) will be characterized by retention of the neonatal isoform (MHC-Neo), along with predominant expression of fast MHC-2X and -2B, which will transition into greater MHC-1β and -2A isoform content as development progresses. This hypothesis was tested using Q-PCR to quantify and compare gene expression of each isoform with its protein content determined by gel electrophoresis and densitometry. These data were correlated with nesting activity in an age-matched sample of each age group studied. Shifts in regulation of MHC gene transcripts matched well with isoform expression. Notably, mRNA for MHC-Neo and -2B decrease, resulting in little-to-no isoform translation after age 7 mo, whereas mRNA for MHC-1β and -2A increase, and this corresponds with subtle increases in content for these isoforms into late adulthood. Despite the tail remaining intrinsically fast-contracting, a critical growth period for isoform transition is observed between 7 and 13 mo, correlating primarily with use of the tail during nesting activities. Functional transitions in MHC isoforms and fiber type properties may be associated with muscle "tuning" repetitive nest remodeling tasks requiring sustained contractions of the caudal flexors.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Little is understood about skeletal muscle development as it pertains to tail prehensility in mammals. This study uses an integrative approach of relating both MHC gene and protein expression with behavioral and morphometric changes to reveal a predominant fast MHC expression with subtle isoform transitions in caudal muscle across ontogeny. The functional shifts observed are most notably correlated with increased tail grasping for nesting activities.
