EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE OF UNDERGROUND TUBULAR STRUCTURES: EXACT FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEMS AND EVALUATION OF ENGINEERING APPROACHES

S. Takhirov,M. Israilov
Abstract:The main objective is to evaluate the commonly used engineering approaches describing the performance of underground pipeline and to provide more realistic statement of the soil-pipeline interaction problem and its closed form solution. To begin, the following most current and essential engineering approaches modeling earthquake response of long underground structures are discussed. First, the theory assuming that displacements and strains of the pipe are equal to that of seismic wave. Second, the approaches are related to the modeling of the soilstructure interaction by simple deformable elements (e. g. elastic springs, viscoelastic body, etc.). Third, the approaches based on hypotheses attempting to reflect approximate relationships that describe the structural response of the piping system to seismic excitation are discussed. The second half of the study is connected to the transition from engineering approaches to the formulation and solution of problems of coupled seismic vibrations of the underground tubular structures and soil. The developed more realistic theory leads to the discovery of new effects and phenomena. Based on an analysis of the problem statements and subsequent theoretical solutions of coupled problems on seismic response of pipeline, it was shown that the assumption of proportionality of the interaction forces to the relative displacement of the pipe and the soil is not correct in general, but it can be adopted as an approximation under some conditions and in some limited cases. Hence, this result specifies ranges of applicability and accuracy of the existing engineering approaches and theories in seismodynamics of long underground structures.
