Abstract:Because of their high energy density and long cycle life, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have dominated the portable electronics market for over 20 years. However, with the increasing demand for large-scale energy storage systems for grid applications, the price of Li resources has increased owing to the low abundance of Li in Earth's crust and non-uniform distribution on the planet. Because Na has similar physical and chemical properties as Li and is an abundant natural resource, room-temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are expected to be among the most promising next-generation large grid energy storage devices. It is known that the cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte materials are the main components of batteries. Among these, Na-containing cathode materials are of critical importance. As a cathode material for SIBs, polyanion-type compounds have become a hot research topic owing to their versatile structural frameworks, high thermal stabilities, high ambient stabilities even in the charging state, small volume changes, tunable operating voltage by tuning the chemical environment of the polyanions, and high operating voltages owing to the inductive effects of the polyanionic groups (PO43-,SO42-, SiO44- etc.). In particular, for Earth's abundant resources and inherent stability, polyanion-based compounds are suitable for large-scale stationary energy storage. Taking grid balancing into account, batteries with fast charge rates are in demand, which requires cathodes having high rate capability. However, despite the presence of ion diffusion channels in polyanion compounds, the electronic transport channels are blocked owing to the separation of the metal polyhedral and the strong electronegativity of the anions, leading to poor electron conductivity, which largely limits the rate capability of polyanion compounds. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the inherent limitation of the kinetics in terms of the structural aspects and to determine strategies for improving the rate capability. This review discusses the intrinsic reasons for the factors impacting ion diffusion based on the different structures of polyanion-type cathodes. From the perspectives of surface modification and morphology, strategies for enhancing the transport of sodium ions and electrons at the surface and interface are summarized and discussed. Then, from the standpoint of the hierarchical structures of materials to the design of a structural framework, which have been rarely reported, this review proposes schemes that intrinsically enhance the rate capability of polyanion compounds and provides a perspective on developments that can further improve the rate capability of cathode materials. This review provides suggestions for designing and optimizing high-rate polyanion-type and other kinds of cathodes from both academic and practical viewpoints.

Abstract:Grid-scale energy storage systems with low-cost and high-performance electrodes are needed to meet the requirements of sustainable energy systems. Due to the wide abundance and low cost of sodium resources and their similar electrochemistry to the established lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted considerable interest as ideal candidates for grid-scale energy storage systems. In the past decade, though tremendous efforts have been made to promote the development of SIBs, and significant advances have been achieved, further improvements are still required in terms of energy/power density and long cyclic stability for commercialization. In this review, the latest progress in electrode materials for SIBs, including a variety of promising cathodes and anodes, is briefly summarized. Besides, the sodium storage mechanisms, endeavors on electrochemical property enhancements, structural and compositional optimizations, challenges and perspectives of the electrode materials for SIBs are discussed. Though enormous challenges may lie ahead, we believe that through intensive research efforts, sodium-ion batteries with low operation cost and longevity will be commercialized for large-scale energy storage application in the near future.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Considering the wide abundance and low cost of sodium resources and their similar electrochemistry to the well-established lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been regarded as potential alternatives to LIBs. Iron-based materials have attracted considerable attention as promising electrode materials for SIBs due to their high theoretical capacitance, natural abundance, and low cost. However, their sluggish reaction kinetics, accompanied with severe volume change during cycling sodiation/desodiation process and their unsatisfied electric conductivity, always leads to inferior long-term cycling stability and rate performance. To resolve these issues, significant and effective efforts have been made to improve their electrochemical performance, and great processes have been achieved. In this review, some recent progress on the development and design of nanostructured iron-based anodes, including oxides, chalcogenides, phosphides, nitrides, alloys, etc., are summarized, mainly focusing on the relationship between their structural features and sodium storage performance to understand the mechanisms behind the improvement of their sodium storage performance. In addition, the current challenges and future directions upon improving iron-based anodes for SIBs are briefly reviewed. These iron-based electrode materials are expected to be competitive and attractive electrodes for next-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract:As one of the most promising candidate devices in large-scale energy storage applications for renewable energy, sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) have attracted great attention due to the inexpensive cost and abundant sodium sources in earth's crust. To exert the cost advantage for NIBs, earth-abundant electrode materials are essential. Recent studies have demonstrated that various iron-based materials, such as iron oxides and chalcogenides can be regarded as potential anode candidates for NIBs. In this review, recent progress on iron-based materials as anodes for NIBs is summarized. The corresponding structural designs, achievable capacities and electrochemical mechanisms are also briefly discussed. Based on this extensive literature review, there are still some existing challenges for these anode materials. In addition, outlooks on the possible further research directions are presented.

Abstract:Recently, room‐temperature stationary sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have received extensive investigations for large‐scale energy storage systems (EESs) and smart grids due to the huge natural abundance and low cost of sodium. The SIBs share a similar “rocking‐chair” sodium storage mechanism with lithium‐ion batteries; thus, selecting appropriate electrodes with a low cost, satisfactory electrochemical performance, and high reliability is the key point for the development for SIBs. On the other hand, the carefully chosen elements in the electrodes also largely determine the cost of SIBs. Therefore, earth‐abundant‐metal‐based compounds are ideal candidates for reducing the cost of electrodes. Among all the high‐abundance and low‐cost metal elements, cathodes containing iron and/or manganese are the most representative ones that have attracted numerous studies up till now. Herein, recent advances on both iron‐ and manganese‐based cathodes of various types, such as polyanionic, layered oxide, MXene, and spinel, are highlighted. The structure–function property for the iron‐ and manganese‐based compounds is summarized and analyzed in detail. With the participation of iron and manganese in sodium‐based cathode materials, real applications of room‐temperature SIBs in large‐scale EESs will be greatly promoted and accelerated in the near future. State‐of‐the‐art high‐abundance and low‐cost metal‐based cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries are comprehensively summarized and analyzed, providing a step toward the real‐life, commercial application of sodium‐ion batteries. Constructive suggestions and guidance are provided and future prospects regarding this promising field are discussed.

Abstract:This article comprehensively reviews the research progress and potential development prospects of iron‐based sulfate from the perspective of phase diagram–composition–structure. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are crucial energy equipment that sustain low cost and better environmental benefit. Nevertheless, the practical energy density of SIBs is limited by cathode material. Over last decades, the iron‐based sulfate (IBS) has been extensively studied owing to its numerous advantages, including a large theoretical specific energy (over 100 Wh kg−1), high working potential (above 3.4 V), low cost, good structural stability, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the application of IBS in SIBs is limited by its unsuitable electrolyte and low electronic/ionic conductivity. This review summarizes recently developed results on IBS materials for SIBs, ranging from the phase diagram–composition structure–electrochemical performance to modification research. A generalized summary of the future prospects of IBS‐based materials is also provided, with the hope of inspiring further advances in their application in SIBs.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted much attention for application in large-scale grid energy storage owing to the abundance and low cost of sodium sources. However, low energy density and poor cycling life hinder practical application of SIBs. Recently, substantial efforts have been made to develop electrode materials to push forward large-scale practical applications. Carbon materials can be directly used as anode materials, and they show excellent sodium storage performance. Additionally, designing and constructing carbon hybrid materials is an effective strategy to obtain high-performance anodes for SIBs. In this review, we summarize recent research progress on carbon and carbon hybrid materials as anodes for SIBs. Nanostructural design to enhance the sodium storage performance of anode materials is discussed, and we offer some insight into the potential directions of and future high-performance anode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as one of the most fascinating alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for grid-scale energy storage applications because of the low cost and wide abundance of sodium resources. Among various cathode materials, mixed polyanion compounds come into the spotlight as promising electrode materials due to their superior electrochemical properties, such as high working voltage, long cycling stability, and facile reaction kinetics. In this review, we summarize the recent development in the exploration of different mixed polyanion cathode materials for SIBs. We provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-composition-performance relationship of mixed polyanion cathode materials together with the discussion of their sodium storage mechanisms. It is anticipated that further innovative works on the material design of advanced cathode materials for batteries can be inspired.

Abstract:Sodium-ion battery (SIB), one of most promising battery technologies, offers an alternative low-cost solution for scalable energy storage. Developing advanced electrode materials with superior electrochemical performance is of great significance for SIBs. Transition metal sulfides that emerge as promising anode materials have advantageous features particularly for electrochemical redox reaction, including high theoretical capacity, good cycling stability, easily-controlled structure and modifiable chemical composition. In this review, recent progress of transition metal sulfides based materials for SIBs is summarized by discussing the materials properties, advanced design strategies, electrochemical reaction mechanism and their applications in sodium-ion full batteries. Moreover, we propose several promising strategies to overcome the challenges of transition metal sulfides for SIBs, paving the way to explore and construct advanced electrode materials for SIBs and other energy storage devices.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are seen as an emerging force for future large-scale energy storage due to their cost-effective nature and high safety. Compared with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the energy density of SIBs is insufficient at present. Thus, the development of high-energy SIBs for realizing large-scale energy storage is extremely vital. The key factor determining the energy density in SIBs is the selection of cathodic materials, and the mainstream cathodic materials nowadays include transition metal oxides, polyanionic compounds, and Prussian blue analogs (PBAs). The cathodic materials would greatly improve after targeted modulations that eliminate their shortcomings and step from the laboratory to practical applications. Before that, some remaining challenges in the application of cathode materials for large-scale energy storage SIBs need to be addressed, which are summarized at the end of this Outlook.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent advances in developing high‐performance cathodes with core–shell structures and concentration gradients, presents the state of understanding regarding the sodium storage mechanisms of these heterogeneous cathodes, discusses the remaining major challenges restricting the development of these cathode structures, and provides possible solutions. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) offer excellent potential for meeting the urgent need to develop low‐cost and durable large‐scale electrical energy storage systems. However, the electrochemical performance of currently available SIBs requires substantial improvement to enable their practical deployment. The cathode material is one of the greatest factors impacting SIB performance. The recent development of cathodes with core–shell structures and concentration gradients offers considerable promise for addressing these issues limiting the implementation of SIBs. Therefore, this review presents the primary factors affecting the development of these advanced cathode materials. First, the study discusses recently developed methods for preparing these materials, including precipitation reactions, ion‐exchange reactions, and doping induction. The study further summarizes recent advances in developing layered transition‐metal oxides, poly‐anionic compounds, Prussian blue analogs, organic molecules, and other cathodes with core–shell structures and concentration gradients. Moreover, the state of understanding regarding the Na storage mechanisms of these heterogeneous cathodes is also presented. Finally, the remaining major challenges restricting the development of these cathode structures are discussed and possible solutions are provided. This review also enables the heterogeneous concepts to be expanded to high‐capacity anodes employed in alkali metal ion batteries.

Abstract:As the rapid growth of the lithium‐ion battery (LIB) market raises concerns about limited lithium resources, rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are attracting growing attention in the field of electrical energy storage due to the large abundance of sodium. Compared with the well‐developed commercial LIBs, all components of the SIB system, such as the electrode, electrolyte, binder, and separator, need further exploration before reaching a practical industrial application level. Drawing lessons from the LIB research, the SIB electrode materials are being extensively investigated, resulting in tremendous progress in recent years. In this article, the progress of the research on the development of electrode materials for SIBs is summarized. A variety of new electrode materials for SIBs, including transition‐metal oxides with a layered or tunnel structure, polyanionic compounds, and organic molecules, have been proposed and systematically investigated. Several promising materials with moderate energy density and ultra‐long cycling performance are demonstrated. Appropriate doping and/or surface treatment methodologies are developed to effectively promote the electrochemical properties. The challenges of and opportunities for exploiting satisfactory SIB electrode materials for practical applications are outlined.

Abstract:Considering the natural abundance and low cost of sodium resources, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received much attention for large-scale electro-chemical energy storage. However, smart structure design strategies and good mechanistic understanding are required to enable advanced SIBs with high energy density. In recent years, the exploration of advanced cathode, anode, and electrolyte materials, as well as advanced diagnostics have been extensively carried out. This review mainly focuses on the challenging problems for the attractive battery materials (i.e., cathode, anode, and electrolytes) and summarizes the latest strategies to improve their electrochemical performance as well as presenting recent progress in operando diagnostics to disclose the physics behind the electrochemical performance and to provide guidance and approaches to design and synthesize advanced battery materials. Outlook and perspectives on the future research to build better SIBs are also provided.

Abstract:Rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered attractive alternatives to lithium‐ion batteries for next‐generation sustainable and large‐scale electrochemical energy storage. Organic sodium‐ion batteries (OSIBs) using environmentally benign organic materials as electrodes, which demonstrate high energy/power density and good structural designability, have recently attracted great attention. Nevertheless, the practical applications and popularization of OSIBs are generally restricted by the intrinsic disadvantages related to organic electrodes, such as their low conductivity, poor stability, and high solubility in electrolytes. Here, the latest research progress with regard to electrode materials of OSIBs, ranging from small molecules to organic polymers, is systematically reviewed, with the main focus on the molecular structure design/modification, the electrochemical behavior, and the corresponding charge‐storage mechanism. Particularly, the challenges faced by OSIBs and the effective design strategies are comprehensively summarized from three aspects: function‐oriented molecular design, micromorphology regulation, and construction of organic–inorganic composites. Finally, the perspectives and opportunities in the research of organic electrode materials are discussed.

Abstract:Energy storage is an ever-growing global concern due to increased energy needs and resource exhaustion. Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have called increasing attention and achieved substantial progress in recent years owing to the abundance and even distribution of Na resources in the crust, and the predicted low cost of the technique. Nevertheless, SIBs still face challenges like lower energy density and inferior cycling stability compared to mature lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Enhancing the electrochemical performance of SIBs requires an in-deep and comprehensive understanding of the improvement strategies and the underlying reaction mechanism elucidated by in situ techniques. In this review, commonly applied in situ techniques, for instance, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and their applications on the representative cathode and anode materials with selected samples are summarized. We discuss the merits and demerits of each type of material, strategies to enhance their electrochemical performance, and the applications of in situ characterizations of them during the de/sodiation process to reveal the underlying reaction mechanism for performance improvement. We aim to elucidate the composition/structure-performance relationship to provide guidelines for rational design and preparation of electrode materials toward high electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been proposed as a potential substitute for commercial lithium-ion batteries due to their excellent storage performance and cost-effectiveness. However, due to the substantial radius of sodium ions, there is an urgent need to develop anode materials with exemplary electrochemical characteristics, thereby enabling the fabrication of sodium-ion batteries with high energy density and rapid dynamics. Carbon materials are highly valued in the energy-storage field due to their diverse structures, low cost, and high reliability. This review comprehensively summarizes the typical structure; energy-storage mechanisms; and current development status of various carbon-based anode materials for SIBs, such as hard carbon, soft carbon, graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and porous carbon materials. This review also provides an overview of the current status and future development of related companies for sodium-ion batteries. Furthermore, it offers a summary and outlook on the challenges and opportunities associated with the design principles and large-scale production of carbon materials with high-energy-density requirements. This review offers an avenue for exploring outstanding improvement strategies for carbon materials, which can provide guidance for future application and research.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been powering portable electronic devices and electric vehicles for over three decades. However, growing concerns regarding the limited availability of lithium resources and the subsequent surge in costs have prompted the exploration of alternative energy storage systems beyond LIBs. Among these alternatives, sodium-based batteries, with their similar intercalation chemistry, have emerged as the most promising alternative due to their cost-effectiveness and the abundance of sodium reserves in nature. Developing sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) that possess high energy density, long lifespan, and high-rate capability necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanisms, especially the intricate chemistry involved in cathode materials. In this review, we delve into the reaction mechanisms of the most commonly used cathode materials for SIBs, which include layered transition-metal oxides, polyanionic compounds, Prussian blue analogues, etc. We also highlight the specific physicochemical properties that have been uncovered through the application of advanced operando characterization techniques. Building upon the insights gained from this comprehensive review, we put forth future perspectives on the development of novel cathode materials for SIBs. Recent Advances in Carbon Anodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Recent progresses on the development of carbon‐based negative electrodes including graphic, amorphous carbon and nanocarbon were summarized for sodium ion batteries. A comprehensive understanding of their physical properties, the sodium ions storage mechanisms, and the improvement measures to cope with the current challenges were provided. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have gained tremendous attention for large‐scale energy storage applications due to the natural abundance, low cost, and even geographic distribution of sodium resources as well as a similar working mechanism to lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). One of the critical bottlenecks, however, is the design of high‐performance and low‐cost anode materials. Graphite anode that has dominated the market share of LIBs does not properly intercalate sodium ions. However, other carbonaceous materials are still considered as one of the most promising anode materials for SIBs in virtue of their high electronic conductivity, abundant active sites, hierarchical porosity, and excellent mechanical stability. In this review, we have tried to summarize the latest progresses made on the development of carbon‐based negative electrodes (including hard carbons, soft carbons, and synthetic carbon allotropes) for SIBs. We also have provided a comprehensive understanding of their physical properties, the sodium ions storage mechanisms, and the improvement measures to cope with the current challenges. In addition, we have proposed future research directions for SIBs that will provide important insights into further development of carbon‐based materials for SIBs.
