Abstract:Mott physics is characterized by an interaction-driven metal-to-insulator transition in a partially filled band. In the resulting insulating state, antiferromagnetic orders of the local moments typically develop, but in rare situations no long-range magnetic order appears, even at zero temperature, rendering the system a quantum spin liquid. A fundamental and technologically critical question is whether one can tune the underlying energetic landscape to control both metal-to-insulator and Néel transitions, and even stabilize latent metastable phases, ideally on a platform suitable for applications. Here we demonstrate how to achieve this in ultrathin films of NdNiO3 with various degrees of lattice mismatch, and report on the quantum critical behaviours not reported in the bulk by transport measurements and resonant X-ray spectroscopy/scattering. In particular, on the decay of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state into a non-Fermi liquid, we find evidence of a quantum metal-to-insulator transition that spans a non-magnetic insulating phase.

Abstract:In complex materials observed electronic phases and transitions between them often involve coupling between many degrees of freedom whose entanglement convolutes understanding of the instigating mechanism. Metal-insulator transitions are one such problem where coupling to the structural, orbital, charge and magnetic order parameters frequently obscures the underlying physics. Here, we demonstrate a way to unravel this conundrum by heterostructuring a prototypical multi-ordered complex oxide NdNiO 3 in ultra thin geometry, which preserves the metal-to-insulator transition and bulk-like magnetic order parameter, but entirely suppresses the symmetry lowering and long-range charge order parameter. These findings illustrate the utility of heterointerfaces as a powerful method for removing competing order parameters to gain greater insight into the nature of the transition, here revealing that the magnetic order generates the transition independently, leading to an exceptionally rare purely electronic metal-insulator transition with no symmetry change.
Phase Diagram of Infinite-layer Nickelate Compounds from First- and Second-principles Calculations

Abstract: The fundamental properties of infinite-layer rare-earth nickelates (RNiO2) are carefully revisited and compared with those of CaCuO2 and RNiO3 perovskites. Combining first-principles and finite-temperature second-principles calculations, we highlight that bulk NdNiO2 compound are far from equivalent to CaCuO2, together at the structural, electronic, and magnetic levels. Structurally, it is shown to be prone to spin-phonon coupling induced oxygen square rotation motion, which might be responsible for the intriguing upturn of the resistivity. At the electronic and magnetic levels, we point out orbital-selective Mott localization with strong out-of-plane band dispersion, which should result in the isotropic upper critical fields and weakly three-dimensional magnetic interactions with in-plane local moment and out-of-plane itinerant moment. We further demonstrate that as in RNiO3 perovskites, oxygen rotation motion and rare-earth ion controlled electronic and magnetic properties can give rise in RNiO2 compounds to a rich phase diagram and high tunability of various appealing properties. In line with that, we reveal that key ingredients of high-Tc superconductor such as orbital polarization, Fermi surface, and antiferromagnetic interactions can be deliberately controlled in NdNiO2 through epitaxial strain. Exploiting strain-orbital engineering, a crossover from three- to two-dimensional magnetic transition can be established, making then NdNiO2 thin film a true analog of high-Tc cuprates.
Charge disproportionation without charge transfer in the rare-earth nickelates as a possible mechanism for the metal-insulator transition

Abstract:We study a model for the metal-insulator (MI) transition in the rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_3$, based upon a negative charge transfer energy and coupling to a rock-salt like lattice distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Using exact diagonalization and the Hartree-Fock approximation we demonstrate that electrons couple strongly to these distortions. For small distortions the system is metallic, with ground state of predominantly $d^8\ligand$ character, where $\ligand$ denotes a ligand hole. For sufficiently large distortions ($\delta d_{\rm Ni-O} \sim 0.05 - 0.10Å$), however, a gap opens at the Fermi energy as the system enters a periodically distorted state alternating along the three crystallographic axes, with $(d^8\ligand^2)_{S=0}(d^8)_{S=1}$ character, where $S$ is the total spin. Thus the MI transition may be viewed as being driven by an internal volume "collapse" where the NiO$_6$ octahedra with two ligand holes shrink around their central Ni, while the remaining octahedra expand accordingly, resulting in the ($1/2,1/2,1/2$) superstructure observed in x-ray diffraction in the insulating phase. This insulating state is an example of a new type of charge ordering achieved without any actual movement of the charge.

Anomalous electron transport in epitaxial NdNiO$_3$ films

Abstract:The origin of simultaneous electronic, structural and magnetic transitions in bulk rare-earth nickelates ($RE$NiO$_3$) remains puzzling with multiple conflicting reports on the nature of these entangled phase transitions. Heterostructure engineering of these materials offers unique opportunity to decouple metal-insulator transition (MIT) from the magnetic transition. However, the evolution of underlying electronic properties across these decoupled transitions remains largely unexplored. In order to address this, we have measured Hall effect on a series of epitaxial NdNiO$_3$ films, spanning a variety of electronic and magnetic phases. We find that the MIT results in only partially gapped Fermi surface, whereas full insulating phase forms below the magnetic transition. In addition, we also find a systematic reduction of the Hall coefficient ($R_H$) in the metallic phase of these films with epitaxial strain and also a surprising transition to negative value at large compressive strain. Partially gapped weakly insulating, paramagnetic phase is reminiscence of pseudogap behavior of high $T_c$ cuprates. The precursor metallic phase, which undergoes transition to insulating phase is a non-Fermi liquid with the temperature exponent ($n$) of resistivity of 1, whereas the exponent increases to 4/3 in the non-insulating samples. Such nickelate phase diagram with sign-reversal of $R_H$, pseudo-gap phase and non Fermi liquid behavior are intriguingly similar to high $T_c$ cuprates, giving important guideline to engineer unconventional superconductivity in oxide heterostructure.

Structurally Triggered Metal-Insulator Transition in Rare-Earth Nickelates

Abstract:Rare-earth nickelates form an intriguing series of correlated perovskite oxides. Apart from LaNiO3, they exhibit on cooling a sharp metal-insulator electronic phase transition, a concurrent structural phase transition and a magnetic phase transition toward an unusual antiferromagnetic spin order. Appealing for various applications, full exploitation of these compounds is still hampered by the lack of global understanding of the interplay between their electronic, structural and magnetic properties. Here, we show from first-principles calculations that the metal-insulator transition of nickelates arises from the softening of an oxygen breathing distortion, structurally triggered by oxygen-octahedra rotation motions. The origin of such a rare triggered mechanism is traced back in their electronic and magnetic properties, providing a united picture. We further develop a Landau model accounting for the evolution of the metal-insulator transition in terms of the $R cations and rationalising how to tune this transition by acting on oxygen rotation motions.

Striped nanoscale phase separation at the metal-insulator transition of heteroepitaxial nickelates

Abstract:Nucleation processes of mixed-phase states are an intrinsic characteristic of first-order phase transitions, typically related to local symmetry breaking. Direct observation of emerging mixed-phase regions in materials showing a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) offers unique opportunities to uncover their driving mechanism. Using photoemission electron microscopy, we image the nanoscale formation and growth of insulating domains across the temperature-driven MIT in NdNiO3 epitaxial thin films. Heteroepitaxy is found to strongly determine the nanoscale nature of the phase transition, inducing preferential formation of striped domains along the terraces of atomically flat stepped surfaces. We show that the distribution of transition temperatures is a local property, set by surface morphology and stable across multiple temperature cycles. Our data provide new insights into the MIT of heteroepitaxial nickelates and point to a rich, nanoscale phenomenology in this strongly correlated material.
Origins of bad metal conductivity and the insulator-metal transition in the rare-earth nickelates

Abstract:For most metals, increasing temperature (T) or disorder will quicken electron scattering. This hypothesis informs the Drude model of electronic conductivity. However, for so-called bad metals this predicts scattering times so short as to conflict with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Here we introduce the rare-earth nickelates (RNiO_3, R = rare earth) as a class of bad metals. We study SmNiO_3 thin films using infrared spectroscopy while varying T and disorder. We show that the interaction between lattice distortions and Ni-O bond covalence explains both the bad metal conduction and the insulator-metal transition in the nickelates by shifting spectral weight over the large energy scale established by the Ni-O orbital interaction, thus enabling very low \sigma while preserving the Drude model and without violating the uncertainty principle.

Abstract:La2NiO4 has a similar structure to La2CuO4 and was proposed as a high-temperature superconductor based on magnetic-moment measurements decades ago. Nevertheless, with the exception for electrical resistance drop behavior of about 4 orders of magnitude that is claimed to originate from the superconductivity ever observed in Sr-doped La2NiO4, most electrical data reported to date in La2NiO4 system exhibit a trivial insulating ground state. Here, we definitively identify the similar electrical resistance drop behavior of more than 3 orders of magnitude in La2NiO4+delta. However, our extensive investigations reveal that this phenomenon is a novel insulator-to-metal transition, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, compared to the weak magnetic-field effects, pressure can significantly suppress the transition and transform from the metallic to an insulating ground state, accompanied by an isostructural phase transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of the metallic conducting ground state in La2NiO4+delta, but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in single-layer lanthanum nickelates.
Electronically Amplified Electron-Phonon Interaction and Metal-Insulator Transition in Perovskite Nickelates

Abstract:The relative role of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions in driving the metal-insulator transition in perovskite nickelates opens a rare window into the non-trivial interplay of the two important degrees of freedom in solids. The most promising solution is to extract the electronic and lattice contributions during the phase transition by performing high-resolution spectroscopy measurements. Here, we present a three-dimensional electronic structure study of Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0 and 0.175) thin films with unprecedented accuracy, in which the low energy fermiology has a quantitative agreement with model simulations and first-principles calculations. Two characteristic phonons, the octahedral rotational and breathing modes, are illustrated to be coupled with the electron dynamics in the metallic phase, showing a kink structure along the band dispersion, as well as a hump feature in the energy spectrum. Entering the insulating state, the electron-phonon interaction is amplified by strong electron correlations, transforming the mobile large polarons at high temperatures to localized small polarons in the ground state. Moreover, the analysis of quasiparticle residue enables us to establish a transport-spectroscopy correspondence in Nd1-xSrxNiO3 thin films. Our findings demonstrate the essential role of electron-lattice interaction enhanced by the electronic correlation to stabilize the insulating phase in the perovskite nickelates.

Abstract:A combination of density functional and dynamical mean field theory calculations are used to show that the remarkable metal-insulator transition in the rare earth nickelate perovskites arise from a site-selective Mott phase, in which the $d$-electrons on a half of the Ni ions are localized to form a fluctuating moment while the $d$-electrons on other Ni ions form a singlet with holes on the surrounding oxygen ions. The calculation reproduces key features observed in the nickelate materials, including an insulating gap in the paramagnetic state, a strong variation of static magnetic moments among Ni sites and an absence of "charge order". A connection between structure and insulating behavior is documented. The site-selective Mott transition may be a more broadly applicable concept in the description of correlated materials.
Conductivity noise across temperature driven transitions of rare-earth nickelate heterostructures

Abstract:The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of bulk rare-earth nickelates is accompanied by a simultaneous charge ordering (CO) transition. We have investigated low-frequency resistance fluctuations (noise) across the MIT and magnetic transition of [EuNiO$_3$/LaNiO$_3$] superlattices, where selective suppression of charge ordering has been achieved by mismatching the superlattice periodicity with the periodicity of charge ordering. We have observed that irrespective of the presence/absence of long-range CO, the noise magnitude is enhanced by several orders with strong non-1/$f$ ($f$ = frequency) component when the system undergoes MIT and magnetic transition. The higher order statistics of resistance fluctuations reveal the presence of strong non-Gaussian components in both cases, further indicating inhomogeneous electrical transport arising from the electronic phase separation. Specifically, we find almost three orders of magnitude smaller noise in the insulating phase of the sample without long-range CO compared to the sample with CO. These findings suggest that digital synthesis can be a potential route to implement electronic transitions of complex oxides for device application.

Investigating the cause of crossover from charge/spin stripe insulator to correlated metallic phase in layered T' nickelates -- R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$

Abstract:The $T^{\prime}$ infinite layered nickelates have recently garnered significant attention owing to the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped RNiO$_2$ (R $=$ La, Pr, or Nd), which is the $n = \infty$ member of the series R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$. Here, we investigate the $n = 3$ member, namely R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ (R $=$ La, Pr, or Nd) of this family. The compound La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ exhibits simultaneous charge/spin-stripe ordering at T$_N^\ast$ $=$ 105 K, which is also concomitant with the onset of metal-to-insulator (MIT) transition upon lowering the temperature below T$_N^\ast$. We investigate the conspicuous absence of this transition in the Pr and Nd analogues of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$. To achieve this purpose, we synthesized solid-solutions of the form (La, Pr)$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and (La, Nd)$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and examined the behavior of T$_N^\ast$ as a function of the average R-site ionic radius ($r_{\overline{R}}$). We show that after an initial quasilinear decrease with decreasing $r_{\overline{R}}$, T$_N^\ast$ suddenly vanishes in the narrow range 1.134 $Å$ $\leq$ $r_{\overline{R}}$ $\leq$ 1.143 $Å$. In the same range, we observed the emergence of a new transition below T$^\ast$, whose onset temperature increases as $r_{\overline{R}}$ further decreases. We, therefore, argue that the sudden vanishing of charge/spin-stripe/MIT ordering upon decreasing $r_{\overline{R}}$ is due to the appearance of a new competing phase. The point $r_{\overline{R}}$ $\approx$ $r_c$, where T$_N^\ast$ vanishes and T$^\ast$ appears -- a quantum critical point -- should be investigated further. In this regard, Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and Pr-rich samples should be useful due to the weak magnetization response associated with the Pr-sublattice, as shown here.

Rare-earth control of phase transitions in infinite-layer nickelates

Abstract:Perovskite nickelates RNiO3 (R = rare-earth ion) exhibit complex rare-earth ion dependent phase diagram and high tunability of various appealing properties. Here, combining first- and finite-temperature second-principles calculations, we explicitly demonstrate that the superior merits of the interplay among lattice, electron, and spin degrees of freedom can be passed to RNiO2, which recently gained significant interest as superconductors. We unveil that decreasing the rare-earth size directly modulates the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties and naturally groups infinite-layer nickelates into two categories in terms of the Fermi surface and magnetic dimensionality: compounds with large rare-earth sizes (La, Pr) closely resemble the key properties of CaCuO2, showing quasi-two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations and strongly localized dx2-y2 orbitals around the Fermi level; the compounds with small rare-earth sizes (Nd-Lu) are highly analogous to ferropnictides, showing three-dimensional (3D) magnetic dimensionality and strong kz dispersion of d3z2-r2 electrons at the Fermi level. Additionally, we highlight that RNiO2 with R = Nd-Lu exhibit on cooling a structural transition with the appearance of oxygen rotation motion, which is softened by the reduction of rare-earth size and enhanced by spin-rotation couplings. The rare-earth control of kz dispersion and structural phase transition might be the key factors differentiating the distinct upper critical field and resistivity in different compounds. The established original phase diagram summarizing the temperature and rare-earth controlled structural, electronic, and magnetic transitions in RNiO2 compounds provides rich structural and chemical flexibility to tailor the superconducting property.
Tunable Disorder and Localization in the Rare-Earth Nickelates

Abstract:The rare-earth nickelates are a rich playground for transport properties, known to host non-Fermi liquid character, resistance saturation and metal-insulator transitions. We report a study of transport in LaNiO3 in the presence of tunable disorder induced by irradiation. While pristine LaNiO3 samples are metallic, highly irradiated samples show insulating behaviour at all temperatures. Using irradiation fluence as a tuning handle, we uncover an intermediate region hosting a metal-insulator transition. This transition falls within the Mott-Ioffe-Regel regime wherein the mean free path is comparable to lattice spacing. In the high temperature metallic regime, we find a transition from non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi-liquid-like character. On the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition, we find behaviour that is consistent with weak localization. This is reflected in magnetoresistance that scales with the square of the field and in resistivity. In the highly irradiated insulating samples, we find good agreement with variable range hopping, consistent with Anderson localization. We find qualitatively similar behaviour in thick PrNiO3 films as well. Our results demonstrate that ion irradiation can be used to tailor transport, serving as an excellent tool to study the physics of localization.
Key role of lattice symmetry in the metal-insulator transition of NdNiO3 films

Abstract:Bulk NdNiO3 exhibits a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as the temperature is lowered that is also seen in tensile strained films. In contrast, films that are under a large compressive strain typically remain metallic at all temperatures. To clarify the microscopic origins of this behavior, we use position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction in scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterize strained NdNiO3 films both above and below the MIT temperature. We show that a symmetry lowering structural change takes place in case of the tensile strained film, which undergoes an MIT, but is absent in the compressively strained film. Using space group symmetry arguments, we show that these results support the bond length disproportionation model of the MIT in the rare-earth nickelates. Furthermore, the results provide insights into the non-Fermi liquid phase that is observed in films for which the MIT is absent.

Exposing nontrivial flat bands and superconducting pairing in infinite-layer nickelates

Abstract:Flat bands coupled with magnetism and topological orders near or at the Fermi level are well known to drive exotic correlation physics and unconventional superconductivity. Here, based on first-principles modeling combined with an in-depth symmetry analysis, we reveal the presence of topological flat bands involving low-energy Ni-$3d_{z^2}$ states in the recently discovered superconductor LaNiO$_{2}$. Our analysis demonstrates that LaNiO$_2$ is an Axion insulator with $\mathbb{Z}_{4} = 2$ and that it supports topological crystalline insulating states protected by the glide mirror symmetries. The topological flat bands in LaNiO$_{2}$ are also shown to host odd-parity superconductivity. Our study indicates that the nickelates would provide an interesting materials platform for exploring the interplay of flat bands, topological states, and superconductivity.

Abstract:The trilayer nickelate Nd4Ni3O10-delta was investigated by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The crystal structure data suggest a higher Ni valence in the inner perovskitelike layer. At ambient pressure the resistivity shows a jump at 162 K, indicating a metal-to-metal transition (MMT). The MMT is also characterized by a magnetic susceptibility drop, a sharp specific-heat peak, and an isotropic lattice contraction. Below similar to 50 K, a resistivity upturn with log T dependence shows up, accompanied with negative thermal expansion. External hydrostatic pressure suppresses the resistivity jump progressively, coincident with the weakening of the log T behavior. The low-temperature electronic specific-heat coefficient is extracted to be similar to 150 mJ K-2 mol-f.u(-1), equivalent to similar to 50 mJ K-2 mol-Ni-1, indicating an unusual heavy-electron correlated state. The novel heavy-electron state as well as the logarithmic temperature dependence of resistivity is explained in terms of the Ni3+-centered Kondo effect in the inner layer of the (NdNiO3)(3) trilayers.

Abstract:The novel photoinduced insulator‐metal and superconducting‐like phase transitions are observed in the infinite‐layer NdNiO2 films, which demonstrates the capacity of photons to manipulate the electronic correlation in Mott‐like insulators, and sheds some light on the possibility of the superconducting in electron‐doped nickelates. The quantum phase transition caused by regulating the electronic correlation in strongly correlated quantum materials has been a research hotspot in condensed matter science. Herein, a photon‐induced quantum phase transition from the Kondo‐Mott insulating state to the low temperature metallic one accompanying with the magnetoresistance changing from negative to positive in the infinite‐layer NdNiO2 films is reported, where the antiferromagnetic coupling among the Ni1+ localized spins and the Kondo effect are effectively suppressed by manipulating the correlation of Ni‐3d and Nd‐5d electrons under the photoirradiation. Moreover, the critical temperature Tc of the superconducting‐like transition exhibits a dome‐shaped evolution with the maximum up to ≈42 K, and the electrons dominate the transport process proved by the Hall effect measurements. These findings not only make the photoinduction a promising way to control the quantum phase transition by manipulating the electronic correlation in Mott‐like insulators, but also shed some light on the possibility of the superconducting in electron‐doped nickelates.

Sr-Doping-Modulated Metal-Insulator Transition in NdNiO 3 Epitaxial Films

Abstract:Perovskite-structured nickelates, ReNiO 3 (Re = rare-earth), have long garnered significant research interest due to their sharp and highly tunable metal-insulator transition (MIT). Doping the parent compound ReNiO 3 compound with alkaline earth metal can substantially suppress this MIT. Recently, intriguing superconductivity has been discovered in doped infinite-layer nickelates (ReNiO 2 ), while the mechanism behind A-site doping-suppressed MIT in the parent compound ReNiO 3 remains unclear. To address this question, we grew a series of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 3 (x = 0 ~ 0.2) thin films and conducted systematic electrical transport measurements. Our resistivity and Hall measurements suggest that Sr-induced excessive holes is not the primary reason for MIT suppression. Instead, first-principles calculations indicate that Sr cations, with larger ionic radius, suppress breathing mode distortions and promote charge transfer between oxygen and Ni cations. This process weakens Ni-O bond disproportionation and Ni 2+ /Ni 4+ charge disproportionation. Such significant modulations in lattice and electronic structure convert the ground state from a charge-disproportionated antiferromagnetic insulator to a paramagnetic metal, thereby suppressing the MIT. This scenario is further supported by the weakened MIT observed in the tensile-strained NSNO/STO(001) films. Our work reveals the A-side doping-modulated electrical transport of perovskite nickelate films, providing deeper insights into novel electric phases in these strongly correlated nickelate systems.
