Abstract:In this study, the evaluation of soil characteristics was coupled with a pyrosequencing analysis of the V2-V3 16S rRNA gene region in order to investigate the bacterial community structure and diversity in the A horizon of a natural saline soil located in Sicily (Italy). The main aim of the research was to assess the organisation and diversity of microbial taxa using a spatial scale that revealed physical and chemical heterogeneity of the habitat under investigation. The results provided information on the type of distribution of different bacterial groups as a function of spatial gradients of soil salinity and pH. The analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA showed differences in bacterial composition and diversity due to a variable salt concentration in the soil. The bacterial community showed a statistically significant spatial variability. Some bacterial phyla appeared spread in the whole area, whatever the salinity gradient. It emerged therefore that a patchy saline soil can not contain just a single microbial community selected to withstand extreme osmotic phenomena, but many communities that can be variously correlated to one or more environmental parameters. Abstract:The solute composition differentiates high‐salinity groundwaters of southern Poland into three genetic, aquifer‐related groups. Sulphate and hydrogen carbonate concentrations relative to chloride, along with total salinity, are the key factors controlling microbial communities. Methanogens dominate in sulphate‐poor brines of the Carpathian Foredeep and flysch formations, while sulphur‐cycling microorganisms, except for thiosulphate oxidisers, are abundant in high‐sulphate waters of the Carpathian Foredeep basement. Total salinity regulates halophiles, and more intricate mechanisms govern methanotroph distribution. Extreme environments, such as highly saline ecosystems, are characterised by a limited presence of microbial communities capable of tolerating and thriving under these conditions. To better understand the limits of life and its chemical and microbiological drivers, highly saline and brine groundwaters of Na‐Cl and Na‐Ca‐Cl types with notably diverse SO4 contents were sampled in water intakes and springs from sedimentary aquifers located in the Outer Carpathians and the Carpathian Foredeep basin and its basement in Poland. Chemical and microbiological methods were used to identify the composition of groundwaters, determine microbial diversity, and indicate processes controlling their distribution using multivariate statistical analyses. DNA sequencing targeting V3‐V4 and V4‐V5 gene regions revealed a predominance of Proteobacteriota, Methanobacteria, Methanomicrobia, and Nanoarchaea in most of the water samples, irrespective of their geological context. Despite the sample‐size constraint, redundancy analysis employing a compositional approach to hydrochemical predictors identified Cl/SO4 and Cl/HCO3 ratios, and specific electrical conductivity, as key gradients shaping microbial communities, depending on the analysed gene regions. Analysis of functional groups revealed that methanogenesis, sulphate oxidation and reduction, and the nitrogen cycle define and distinguish the halotolerant communities in the samples. These communities are characterised by an inverse relationship between methanogens and sulphur‐cycling microorganisms.

Prediction of the three‐dimensional structure of proteins using the electrostatic screening model and hierarchic condensation

Abstract:We describe a method for predicting the three‐dimensional (3‐D) structure of proteins from their sequence alone. The method is based on the electrostatic screening model for the stability of the protein main‐chain conformation. The free energy of a protein as a function of its conformation is obtained from the potentials of mean force analysis of high‐resolution x‐ray protein structures. The free energy function is simple and contains only 44 fitted coefficients. The minimization of the free energy is performed by the torsion space Monte Carlo procedure using the concept of hierarchic condensation. The Monte Carlo minimization procedure is applied to predict the secondary, super‐secondary, and native 3‐D structures of 12 proteins with 28–110 amino acids. The 3‐D structures of the majority of local secondary and super‐secondary structures are predicted accurately. This result suggests that control in forming the native‐like local structure is distributed along the entire protein sequence. The native 3‐D structure is predicted correctly for 3 of 12 proteins composed mainly from the α‐helices. The method fails to predict the native 3‐D structure of proteins with a predominantly β secondary structure. We suggest that the hierarchic condensation is not an appropriate procedure for simulating the folding of proteins made up primarily from β‐strands. Different spatiotemporal dynamics, ecological drivers and assembly processes of bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in brackish-saline groundwater

Abstract:The presence of brackish-saline groundwater (BSG) poses great harms for human health, agricultural and industrial activity. Understanding how the major environmental features in BSG determine microbiota coalescence is crucial for groundwater monitoring optimization. Based on metabarcoding analysis of 242 PCR-amplified samples, we provided the first blueprints about distinct spatiotemporal distributions, ecological drivers and assembly processes of bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in BSG obtained from new-constructed wells at Xiong'an New Area, China. Our study demonstrated that bacterial and archaeal communities exhibited significant spatial turnovers, while fungal community displayed the most obvious seasonal variation. Environmental filtering drove bacterial compositions more than those of archaea and fungi. Total dissolved solids (TDS), one of the most critical hydrochemical factors for salinization, had a stronger effect on bacterial spatiotemporal turnover than on those of the other two taxonomic groups, while chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) was more significantly associated with prokaryotic community variations. Bacterial and archaeal taxa dominated the metacommunity network and connected closely, and TDS was mostly related to archaeal subnetwork topological features, suggesting a significant influence of TDS on species association patterns within archaea. Specific functional guilds like bacterial nitrite oxidation, anammox, and archaeal methanogenesis were enriched in lower-TDS habitats, while higher TDS favored bacterial communities involved in dark oxidation of sulfur compounds, fumarate respiration, and cellulolysis. Finally, we confirmed that bacterial and archaeal assembly processes were governed by determinism in each season, and that of fungi was more regulated by stochasticity. Higher TDS was speculated to lead bacterial assembly more deterministic and that of fungi more random. Together, these findings provided an integrate theoretical framework about the unique responses of the three life domains to brackish-saline stress, and had important implications for microbial ecological prediction in groundwater.

Abstract:Osmotic changes are common challenges for marine microorganisms. Bacteria have developed numerous ways of dealing with this stress, including reprogramming of global cellular processes. However, specific molecular adaptation mechanisms to osmotic stress have mainly been investigated in terrestrial model bacteria. In this work, we aimed to elucidate the basis of adjustment to prolonged salinity challenges at the proteome level in marine bacteria. The objects of our studies were three representatives of bacteria inhabiting various marine environments, Shewanella baltica, Vibrio harveyi and Aliivibrio fischeri. The proteomic studies were performed with bacteria cultivated in increased and decreased salinity, followed by proteolytic digestion of samples which were then subjected to liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis. We show that bacteria adjust at all levels of their biological processes, from DNA topology through gene expression regulation and proteasome assembly, to transport and cellular metabolism. The finding that many similar adaptation strategies were observed for both low- and high-salinity conditions is particularly striking. The results show that adaptation to salinity challenge involves the accumulation of DNA-binding proteins and increased polyamine uptake. We hypothesize that their function is to coat and protect the nucleoid to counteract adverse changes in DNA topology due to ionic shifts.

Distinct bacterial and protist plankton diversity dynamics uncovered through DNA-based monitoring in the Baltic Sea area

Abstract:Planktonic microorganisms in coastal waters form the foundation of food webs and biogeochemical cycles while exposed to pronounced environmental gradients, especially brackish salinities. Yet, commonplace ecological assessment overlooks most of their diversity. Here, we analyzed the protist and bacterial diversity from new and publicly available DNA metabarcoding data collected alongside the Swedish marine monitoring program. We show that salinity, unlike other environmental factors, had a stronger effect on bacterial than protist community composition. The seasonality of protist but not bacterial families showed high geographic variation. Bacterial alpha diversity increased with dissolved inorganic nitrogen, while protist alpha diversity was highest in near-marine salinities. Microbial community composition patterns displayed interannual stability despite technical differences affecting the detection of rare taxa. Co-occurrence analysis identified clusters of potentially interdependent microorganisms. Bayesian modeling showed that the same bacterial lineages were less likely than protists to occur in both lower (<9 PSU) and higher (>15 PSU) brackish salinities. We propose that protists are less ecologically sensitive to salinity due to the disconnection of basic metabolic processes from the cell membrane through compartmentalization. Ultimately, incorporating DNA metabarcoding into an environmental monitoring program allowed us to connect ecological and biogeographic processes with understudied taxa and biodiversity dynamics.

Molecular analysis of microbial community in a groundwater sample polluted by landfill leachate and seawater

Abstract:Seashore landfill aquifers are environments of special physicochemical conditions (high organic load and high salinity), and microbes in leachate-polluted aquifers play a significant role for intrinsic bioremediation. In order to characterize microbial diversity and look for clues on the relationship between microbial community structure and hydrochemistry, a culture-independent examination of a typical groundwater sample obtained from a seashore landfill was conducted by sequence analysis of 16S rDNA clone library. Two sets of universal 16S rDNA primers were used to amplify DNA extracted from the groundwater so that problems arising from primer efficiency and specificity could be reduced. Of 74 clones randomly selected from the libraries, 30 contained unique sequences whose analysis showed that the majority of them belonged to bacteria (95.9%), with Proteobacteria (63.5%) being the dominant division. One archaeal sequence and one eukaryotic sequence were found as well. Bacterial sequences belonging to the following phylogenic groups were identified: Bacteroidetes (20.3%), β, γ, δ and ε-subdivisions of Proteobacteria (47.3%, 9.5%, 5.4% and 1.3%, respectively), Firmicutes (1.4%), Actinobacteria (2.7%), Cyanobacteria (2.7%). The percentages of Proteobacteria and Bacteroides in seawater were greater than those in the groundwater from a non-seashore landfill, indicating a possible influence of seawater. Quite a few sequences had close relatives in marine or hypersaline environments. Many sequences showed affiliations with microbes involved in anaerobic fermentation. The remarkable abundance of sequences related to (per)chlorate-reducing bacteria (CIRB) in the groundwater was significant and worthy of further study.
Salinity-dominated change in community structure and ecological function of Archaea from the lower Pearl River to coastal South China Sea

Abstract:Archaea have multiple roles in global biogeochemical cycles. However, we still have limited knowledge about how environmental factors affect the diversity and function of different archaeal lineages. The goal of this study was to examine the change in the abundance and community structure of Archaea in the sediments collected from the lower Pearl River (mainly North River tributary), its estuary, and coastal South China Sea (SCS) in order to evaluate how archaeal ecological function might change along the salinity gradient. Pyrosequencing of the 16S rDNA gene of Archaea was performed on sediment samples from Feilaixia Dam on the North River tributary to Wanshan islands, which have a salinity range of 0.1 to 31.2 ‰. Consistent with the salt tolerance of cultivated representatives, methanogens in the genera Methanoregula, Methanosaeta, and Methanosarcina and Nitrososphaera within Thaumarchaeota of the ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) were abundant in freshwater sediments of the North River tributary, whereas the marine-associated genera Methanococcoides and Nitrosopumilus were the most abundant methanogens and AOA, respectively, in the estuary and coastal SCS. However, the percentages of total methanogens decreased and Thaumarchaeota increased with salinity, respectively. The phylum Crenarchaeota was largely represented by class-level lineages with no cultivated representatives, which collectively were more abundant in the estuary and coastal SCS in comparison to freshwater sites. This study indicates that salinity is the dominating factor affecting archaeal community structure and ecological function from the North River tributary of the Pearl River, its estuary, and coastal SCS, which is consistent with salinity control on microbial diversity in other regions of the world.

Abstract:Soil salinity and sodicity is a worldwide problem that affects the composition and activity of bacterial communities and results from elevated salt and sodium contents. Depending on the degree of environmental pressure and the combined effect of other factors, haloalkalitolerant and haloalkaliphilic bacterial communities will be selected. These bacteria play a potential role in the maintenance and restoration of salt-affected soils; however, until recently, only a limited number of studies have simultaneously studied the bacterial diversity and activity of saline–sodic soils. Soil samples were collected to analyse and compare the taxonomic composition and metabolic activity of bacteria from four distinct natural plant communities at three soil depths corresponding to a salinity‒sodicity gradient. Bacterial diversity was detected using 16S rRNA gene Illumina MiSeq amplicon sequencing. Community-level physiological profiles (CLPPs) were analysed using the MicroRespTM method. The genus-level bacterial composition and CLPPs differed significantly in soils with different alkaline vegetation. The surface soil samples also significantly differed from the intermediate and deep soil samples. The results showed that the pH, salt content, and Na + content of the soils were the main edaphic factors influencing both bacterial diversity and activity. With salinity and pH, the proportion of the phylum Gemmatimonadota increased, while the proportions of Actinobacteriota and Acidobacteriota decreased.

Abstract:Due to limited description of the role and diversity of archaea in WWTPs, the aim of the study was to analyze microbial community structures and diversities with particular regard to Archaea in the samples taken from different stages of the full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant and effluent receiving water (upstream and downstream discharge point). Our study was focused on showing how the treatment processes influenced the Eubacteria and Archaea composition. Alpha and Beta diversity were used to evaluate the microbial diversity changes in the collected samples. Proteobacteria was the largest fraction ranging from 28% to 67% with 56% relative abundance across all samples. Archaea were present in all stages of WWTP ranged from 1 to 8%. Among the Archaea, two groups of methanogens, acetoclastic ( Methanosarcina , Methanosaeta ) and hydrogenotrophic methanogens ( Methanospirillium , Methanoculleus , Methanobrevibacter ) were dominant in the technological stages. The obtained results indicate that the treated wastewater did not significantly affect eubacterial and archaeal composition in receiving water. However, differences in richness, diversity and microbial composition of Eubacteria and Archaea between the wastewater samples taken from the primary and secondary treatment were observed.

Abstract:The Baltic Sea is a unique brackish water ecosystem that has been studied for decades; however, knowledge about the diversity of the benthic communities of bacteria and microbial eukaryotes within this system is sparse. Using an amplicon sequencing approach, we evaluated alpha and beta diversity of shallow-water coastal microbial sediment communities and their relationship to several environmental factors, on both a large spatial scale in the Baltic Sea and the adjacent North Sea, as well as on a temporal scale at selected sites along the salinity gradient in the Baltic Sea. We found salinity to be among the drivers of alpha diversity for bacteria but not for eukaryotes; however, community network structure appeared to change between sites of different salinity. Furthermore, beta diversity analyses revealed that communities in the poly- to mesohaline sections of the study area were affected to a higher degree by temperature, nutrient and sediment characteristics. This study shows that the structure of coastal microbial communities is to some degree related to salinity, but other factors also play a role.

Abstract:Salt mines feature both autochthonous and allochthonous microbial communities introduced by industrialization. It is important to generate the information on the diversity of the microbial communities present in the salt mines and how they are shaped by the environment representing ecological diversification. Brine from Mahai potash mine (Qianghai, China), an extreme hypersaline environment, is used to produce potash salts for hundreds of millions of people. However, halophiles preserved in this niche during deposition are still unknown. In this study, using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and estimation of physicochemical variables, we examined brine samples collected from locations with the gradient of industrial activity intensity and discrete hydrochemical compositions in the Mahai potash mine. Our findings revealed a highly diverse bacterial community, mainly composed of Pseudomonadota in the hypersaline brines from the industrial area, whereas in the natural brine collected from the upstream Mahai salt lake, most of the 16S rRNA gene reads were assigned to Bacteroidota. Halobacteria and halophilic methanogens dominated archaeal populations. Furthermore, we discovered that in the Mahai potash mining area, bacterial communities tended to respond to anthropogenic influences. In contrast, archaeal diversity and compositions were primarily shaped by the chemical properties of the hypersaline brines. Conspicuously, distinct methanogenic communities were discovered in sets of samples with varying ionic compositions, indicating their strong sensitivity to the brine hydrochemical alterations. Our findings provide the first taxonomic snapshot of microbial communities from the Mahai potash mine and reveal the different responses of bacteria and archaea to environmental variations in this high-altitude aquatic ecosystem.

A matter of salt: global assessment of the effect of salt ionic composition as a driver of aquatic bacterial diversity

Abstract:While the strong general effects of salinity on microbial diversity are well-known and described for marine and freshwater habitats, the impact of the specific composition of major inorganic ions remains largely unexplored. In this study, we assess how microbial community structure in inland saline aquatic habitats is influenced by ionic composition as compared to salinity, spatial factors, and other environmental parameters. We collected and analysed 16S rRNA gene V4 and V3-V4 amplicon datasets from freshwater to hypersaline aquatic environments worldwide (in total 375 samples from 130 lakes). With an emphasis on saline inland waters characterised by highly variable ionic composition, we demonstrated that the ionic composition of the major ions explained more variability in community composition than bulk salinity and that the geographic location of the sampling sites had only an ambiguous effect. We also identified the taxa contributing the most to the observed dissimilarity between communities from sites with different ionic composition and found mostly lineages known to be characteristic for a given habitat type, such as Actinobacteria acI in freshwater, Halomonadaceae in saline, or Nitriliruptorales in soda and soda-saline habitats. Many of these habitat type-specific indicator lineages were monophyletic, underpinning ionic composition as a crucial eco-evolutionary driver of aquatic microbial diversity.

Metagenomic insights into microbial adaptation to the salinity gradient of a typical short residence-time estuary

Abstract:Background: Microbial adaptation to salinity has been a classic inquiry in the field of microbiology. It has been demonstrated that microorganisms can endure salinity stress via either the "salt-in" strategy, involving inorganic ion uptake, or the "salt-out" strategy, relying on compatible solutes. While these insights are mostly based on laboratory-cultured isolates, exploring the adaptive mechanisms of microorganisms within natural salinity gradient is crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of microbial adaptation in the estuarine ecosystem. Results: Here, we conducted metagenomic analyses on filtered surface water samples collected from a typical subtropical short residence-time estuary and categorized them by salinity into low-, intermediate-, and high-salinity metagenomes. Our findings highlighted salinity-driven variations in microbial community composition and function, as revealed through taxonomic and Clusters of Orthologous Group (COG) functional annotations. Through metagenomic binning, 127 bacterial and archaeal metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were reconstructed. These MAGs were categorized as stenohaline-specific to low-, intermediate-, or high-salinity-based on the average relative abundance in one salinity category significantly exceeding those in the other two categories by an order of magnitude. Those that did not meet this criterion were classified as euryhaline, indicating a broader range of salinity tolerance. Applying the Boruta algorithm, a machine learning-based feature selection method, we discerned important genomic features from the stenohaline bacterial MAGs. Of the total 12,162 COGs obtained, 40 were identified as important features, with the "inorganic ion transport and metabolism" COG category emerging as the most prominent. Furthermore, eight COGs were implicated in microbial osmoregulation, of which four were related to the "salt-in" strategy, three to the "salt-out" strategy, and one to the regulation of water channel activity. COG0168, annotated as the Trk-type K+ transporter related to the "salt-in" strategy, was ranked as the most important feature. The relative abundance of COG0168 was observed to increase with rising salinity across metagenomes, the stenohaline strains, and the dominant Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria phyla. Conclusions: We demonstrated that salinity exerts influences on both the taxonomic and functional profiles of the microbial communities inhabiting the estuarine ecosystem. Our findings shed light on diverse salinity adaptation strategies employed by the estuarine microbial communities, highlighting the crucial role of the "salt-in" strategy mediated by Trk-type K+ transporters for microorganisms thriving under osmotic stress in the short residence-time estuary. Abstract:Saline lakes, characterized by high salinity and limited nutrient availability, provide an ideal environment for studying extreme halophiles and their biogeochemical processes. The present study examined prokaryotic microbial communities and their ecological functions in lentic sediments (with the salinity gradient and time series) using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and a metagenomic approach. Our findings revealed a negative correlation between microbial diversity and salinity. The notable predominance of Archaea in high-salinity lakes signified a considerable alteration in the composition of the microbial community. The results indicate that elevated salinity promotes homogeneous selection pressures, causing substantial alterations in microbial diversity and community structure, and simultaneously hindering interactions among microorganisms. This results in a notable decrease in the complexity of microbial ecological networks, ultimately influencing the overall ecological functional responses of microbial communities such as carbon fixation, sulfur, and nitrogen metabolism. Overall, our findings reveal salinity drives a notable predominance of Archaea , selects for species adapted to extreme conditions, and decreases microbial community complexity within saline lake ecosystems.

Abstract:Succession and assembly mechanisms of prokaryotic communities along an extremely wide salinity gradient. Salinity is an important environmental factor in microbial ecology for affecting the microbial communities in diverse environments. Understanding the salinity adaptation mechanisms of a microbial community is a significant issue, while most previous studies only covered a narrow salinity range. Here, variations in seawater prokaryotic communities during the whole salt drying progression (salinity from 3% to 25%) were investigated. According to high‐throughput sequencing results, the diversity, composition, and function of seawater prokaryotic communities varied significantly along the salinity gradient, expressing as decreased diversity, enrichment of some halophilic archaea, and powerful nitrate reduction in samples with high salt concentrations. More importantly, a sudden and dramatic alteration of prokaryotic communities was observed when salinity reached 16%, which was recognized as the change point. Combined with the results of network analysis, we found the increasing of complexity but decreasing of stability in prokaryotic communities when salinity exceeded the change point. Moreover, prokaryotic communities became more deterministic when salinity exceeded the change point due to the niche adaptation of halophilic species. Our study showed that substantial variations in seawater prokaryotic communities along an extremely wide salinity gradient, and also explored the underlying mechanisms regulating these changes.

Abstract:Abstract Riverine environments host diverse microbial communities, exhibiting distinctive assemblies at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. Despite the complexity of microbial life in rivers, the underlying factors that shape the community structure across different compartments remain elusive. Herein, we characterized microbial community composition of biofilm and planktonic (water column) compartments in five naturally saline inland streams and a freshwater stream to examine changes in microbial communities following salinization via sequencing of the microbial 16S rRNA gene. Significant differences in specific conductivity, oxidation–reduction potential, dissolved oxygen, and pH among the sampled streams were measured, as were significant differences in the microbial community composition between the planktonic and biofilm. The bacterial families Bacillaceae , Vicinamibacterceae , and Micrococcaceae were significantly more abundant in the biofilm compartment, while Methylophilaceae, Alcaligenaceae, Spirosomaceae, Burkholderiaceae, and Comamonadaceae were more abundant in the planktonic compartment. In addition, salinity (based on specific conductivity) influenced the microbial community composition in both compartments, with higher sensitivity of the planktonic compartment. Increases in the bacterial families Shewanellaceae , Marinomonadaceae , and Saccharospirillaceae or loss of Anaeromyxobacteraceae could be indicative of increased salinity within inland streams. Our results suggest that monitoring of microbial assemblages of freshwater ecosystems could be used as early warning signs of increased salinization levels.

Life on the edge: active microbial communities in the Kryos MgCl2-brine basin at very low water activity

Abstract:The Kryos Basin is a deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basin (DHAB) located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (34.98°N 22.04°E). It is filled with brine of re-dissolved Messinian evaporites and is nearly saturated with MgCl2-equivalents, which makes this habitat extremely challenging for life. The strong density difference between the anoxic brine and the overlying oxic Mediterranean seawater impedes mixing, giving rise to a narrow chemocline. Here, we investigate the microbial community structure and activities across the seawater-brine interface using a combined biogeochemical, next-generation sequencing, and lipid biomarker approach. Within the interface, we detected fatty acids that were distinctly 13C-enriched when compared to other fatty acids. These likely originated from sulfide-oxidizing bacteria that fix carbon via the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle. In the lower part of the interface, we also measured elevated rates of methane oxidation, probably mediated by aerobic methanotrophs under micro-oxic conditions. Sulfate reduction rates increased across the interface and were highest within the brine, providing first evidence that sulfate reducers (likely Desulfovermiculus and Desulfobacula) thrive in the Kryos Basin at a water activity of only ~0.4 Aw. Our results demonstrate that a highly specialized microbial community in the Kryos Basin has adapted to the poly-extreme conditions of a DHAB with nearly saturated MgCl2 brine, extending the known environmental range where microbial life can persist.

Abstract:The Changjiang estuary and its adjacent East China Sea (ECS) have been considered as one of the most dynamic areas significantly contributing to elemental exchanges globally. The purpose of this study was to understand the alteration of microbial consortia at the interface of riverine and coastal environments in relation to environmental variations as well as their roles in biogeochemical cycling at this dynamic region. We sampled surface sediment samples at 4 stations from the estuary to coastal regions of the ECS. Along with collections of physicochemical parameters, we sequenced bacterial 16S rRNA genes of clones from each sample. Results showed a distinct transition of bacterial community from typical freshwater sediment phyla (e.g., Betaproteobacteria and Firmicutes) to those commonly inhabited in saline environments (e.g., Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria). The bacterial group at the transition zone characterized by high accumulation of organic matters and intense mixing of riverine and coastal waters was most diverse. Bacterial community structures at two ECS stations showed a similar pattern but contained different dominant taxa, shifting from Deltaproteobacteria-affiliated sulfate-reducing bacteria at the station closer to the shore to Gammaproteobacteria-affiliated nitrate-reducing bacteria further offshore. It suggested that the sedimentary bacterial community structure was related to salinity, sediment type, and substrate availability and composition.
