Abstract:In the field of drought monitoring using remote sensing, the software has been lagging behind the applications. For the operational needs of monitoring and evaluating drought, a professional remote sensing application system (named RSDMS) is designed and developed with the concept of component-based technology. Starting from the architecture design, this article details the component-based design patterns of this system, and then discusses some key techniques during the development process. After achieving the general-purpose functionalities, this system also integrates a variety of drought monitoring models in the form of component, showing great flexibility. Meanwhile, the results of preliminary application in Ningxia region of northwestern China are presented to indicate that the system has a good practice effect.

Abstract:Drought is a natural hazard disaster that can deeply affect environments, economies, and societies around the world. Therefore, accurate monitoring of patterns in drought is important. Precipitation is the key variable to define the drought index. However, the spare and uneven distribution of rain gauges limit the access of long-term and reliable in situ observations. Remote sensing techniques enrich the precipitation data at different temporal-spatial resolutions. In this study, the climate prediction center morphing (CMORPH) technique (CMORPH-CRT), the tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite precipitation analysis (TRMM 3B42V7), and the integrated multi-satellite retrievals for global precipitation measurement (IMERG V05) were evaluated and compared with in situ observations for the drought monitoring in the Xiang River Basin, a humid region in China. A widely-used drought index, the standardized precipitation index (SPI), was chosen to evaluate the drought monitoring utility. The atmospheric water deficit (AWD) was used for comparison of the drought estimation with SPI. The results were as follows: (1) IMERG V05 precipitation products showed the highest accuracy against grid-based precipitation, followed by CMORPH-CRT, which performed better than TRMM 3B42V7; (2) IMERG V05 showed the best performance in SPI-1 (one-month SPI) estimations compared with CMORPH-CRT and TRMM 3B42V7; (3) SPI-1 was more suitable for drought monitoring than AWD in the Xiang River Basin, because its high R-values and low root mean square error (RMSE) compared with the corresponding index based on in situ observations; (4) drought conditions in 2015 were apparently more severe than that in 2016 and 2017, with the driest area mainly distributed in the southwest part of the Xiang River Basin.

Abstract:Droughts have caused many damages in many countries and might be aggravated around the world. Therefore, it is urgent to predict and monitor drought accurately. Soil moisture and its corresponding drought index (e.g., soil water deficit index, SWDI) are the key variables to define drought. However, in situ soil moisture observations are inaccessible in many areas. This study applies support vector machine (SVM) by using a new set of inputs to investigate the performance of in situ and remote sensing products (CMORPH-CRT, IMERG V05 and TRMM 3B42V7) for soil moisture and SWDI forecast over the Xiang River Basin. This study also assesses whether the addition of remote sensing soil moisture as input can improve the performance of SWDI prediction. The results are as follows: (1) the new set of inputs is suitable for drought prediction based on SVM; (2) using in situ precipitation as input to SVM shows the best performance for soil moisture prediction, which followed by TRMM 3B42V7, IMERG V05 and CMORPH-CRT; (3) in situ precipitation and IMERG V05 as input are more suitable for indirect SWDI prediction, while CMORPH-CRT and TRMM 3B42V7 are more suitable for direct SWDI prediction; (4) the addition of soil moisture with in situ precipitation or CMORPH-CRT both can improve the performance of direct SWDI prediction; (5) the lead time for drought prediction with SVM over the Xiang River Basin is about 2 weeks.

Abstract:Agricultural drought can have long-lasting and harmful impacts on both the ecosystem and economy. Therefore, it is important to monitor and predict agricultural drought accurately. Soil moisture is the key variable to define the agricultural drought index. However, in situ soil moisture observations are inaccessible in many areas of the world. Remote sensing techniques enrich the surface soil moisture observations at different tempo-spatial resolutions. In this study, the Level 2 L-band radiometer soil moisture dataset was used to estimate the Soil Water Deficit Index (SWDI). The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) dataset was evaluated with the soil moisture dataset obtained from the China Land Soil Moisture Data Assimilation System (CLSMDAS). The SMAP-derived SWDI (SMAP_SWDI) was compared with the atmospheric water deficit (AWD) calculated with precipitation and evapotranspiration from meteorological stations. Drought monitoring and comparison were accomplished at a weekly scale for the growing season (April to November) from 2015 to 2017. The results were as follows: (1) in terms of Pearson correlation coefficients (R-value) between SMAP and CLSMDAS, around 70% performed well and only 10% performed poorly at the grid scale, and the R-value was 0.62 for the whole basin; (2) severe droughts mainly occurred from mid-June to the end of September from 2015 to 2017; (3) severe droughts were detected in the southern and northeastern Xiang River Basin in mid-May of 2015, and in the northern basin in early August of 2016 and end of November 2017; (4) the values of percentage of drought weeks gradually decreased from 2015 to 2017, and increased from the northeast to the southwest of the basin in 2015 and 2016; and (5) the average value of R and probability of detection between SMAP_SWDI and AWD were 0.6 and 0.79, respectively. These results show SMAP has acceptable accuracy and good performance for drought monitoring in the Xiang River Basin.

Abstract:Droughts occur frequently in China and their real-time monitoring and timely reporting are required for prevention and mitigation. This paper presents a method for developing an operational drought monitoring system for China. The method is based on various components such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data access, data processing, indices calculations, drought monitoring and analysis, and information dissemination. The system was tested by monitoring drought conditions in the early spring of 2009 in the Hai Basin of China. Results were compared with the in situ data-based indices. It was found that the system was capable of monitoring spatial variation in vegetation conditions attributed to droughts. The traditional meteorological drought index and yield data were collected to evaluate the system performance. A stronger relationship was found between the vegetation health index and the three-month standard precipitation index for the rainfed cropped areas. The relationship between the drought-area percentage and the winter wheat yield reduction percentage for 16 counties was stronger for the April–May period than for the February–March period. The drought monitoring system could explain about 60% of the variance in the winter wheat yields.

Abstract:Drought is a complex hazard caused by the breaking of water balance and it has always an impact on agricultural, ecological and socio-economic spheres. Although the drought indices deriving from remote sensing data have been used to monitor meteorological or agricultural drought, there are no indices that can suitably reflect the comprehensive information of drought from meteorological to agricultural aspects. In this paper, the synthesized drought index (SDI) is defined as a principal component of vegetation condition index (VCI), temperature condition index (TCI) and precipitation condition index (PCI). SDI integrates multi-source remote sensing data from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) and it synthesizes precipitation deficits, soil thermal stress and vegetation growth status in drought process. Therefore, this method is favorable to monitor the comprehensive drought. In our research, a heavy drought process was accurately explored using SDI in Shandong province, China from 2010 to 2011. Finally, a validation was implemented and its results show that SDI is not only strongly correlated with 3-month scales standardized precipitation index (SPI3), but also with variation of crop yield and drought-affected crop areas. It was proved that this index is a comprehensive drought monitoring indicator and it can contain not only the meteorological drought information but also it can reflect the drought influence on agriculture.

Abstract:Agricultural drought given the significant impacts on social economy and human living, the research on agricultural drought monitoring has been paid broad attention by many scholars. Development of remote sensing technology provides a potential opportunity for effective and real-time agricultural drought monitoring. Vegetation index, as one of the most important parameters to characterize vegetation growth and monitor vegetation change, can effectively monitor and evaluate the crop drought status. High resolution vegetation index time series can not only monitor the feature of changes of affected time, but also can extract the area of crop drought disaster accurately and exactly. However, due to cloud pollution, satellite revisit cycle, sensor design limitations and other factors, it is difficult for a single remote sensing sensor to simultaneously acquire high spatial-temporal images. So, it is urgent to get high spatial and temporal data which can be built by fusion algorithm. In this paper, the time series curve of vegetation index was constructed, and the drought area of crops was extracted by using the time series curve characteristics of maize vegetation index in drought-affected and non-drought-affected years. The overall classification accuracy was 90.03%.

Abstract:<p>Satellite remote sensing provides unprecedented information on near-surface soil moisture at a global scale, enabling a wide range of studies such as drought monitoring and forecasting. Data Assimilation (DA) has been recognized as an effective means to incorporate such observations into hydrologic models to better predict and forecast hydroclimatic variables. In this study, we use a recently developed Evolutionary Particle Filter with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (EPFM) approach to assimilate Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) soil moisture data into Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrologic model to provide more reliable topsoil layer moisture (0~–5 cm) over the entire Continental United States (CONUS). The EPFM outperformed an Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) in terms of correlations and the unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) with in situ measurements from the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) and the United States Climate Reference Network (USCRN). Also, we used a multivariate probability distribution based on a Copula function to integrate the posterior soil moisture, precipitation (from the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS)) and evapotranspiration (from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)) information to develop a new integrated drought index, i.e. SPESMI. To validate the usefulness of the developed integrated drought index, we compared the drought events detected by this index with those reported by the United States Drought Monitor (USDM). The results indicated a strong temporal consistency of the drought areas detected by our approach and the USDM over the entire period of study (April 2015 to June 2018). In addition to such promising results, we noticed that our approach could capture the flash drought in 2017 in the U.S. Northern Plains earlier than the USDM, and could identify some severe to extreme drought events that had been underestimated by the USDM. Moreover, the SPESMI has a high correlation with the yield loss of spring and winter wheat in the United States. This novel drought monitoring framework can serve as an independent and potentially complementary drought monitoring system.</p>

Abstract:Drought usually occurs as a result of an imbalance between water supply and demand. Drought indices, an important tool for studying drought, are commonly used for drought monitoring and drought risk assessment. The ground-based drought indices, with high accuracy, are limited in the area monitored. In contrast, the remotely sensed drought index covers a large area but with poor accuracy. Data-driven data fusion–based estimation of ground indices helps to fill this gap. The overall objective is to determine whether various remotely sensed drought factors can effectively monitor drought in arid and semi-arid northern China. In this study, the ground-based drought index SPEI was reconstructed by using remotely sensed drought factors, divided from the Global Precipitation Measuring Mission GPM, GLDAS, and MODIS satellite sensors as well as environmental covariates. Based on climate elements, soil elements, vegetation, and environmental covariate elements, a composite drought index CDIS was established in this study. In this study, the single drought index, multivariate linear integrated drought index, and bias-corrected random forest method were used as the prediction model. Based on ground truth historical climate data as reference data, the performance of the model-predicted composite drought index CDIS in drought monitoring was evaluated. Our results indicate that the drought index on 1-month time scale has no significant advantage over the maximum single drought index. The bias-corrected random forest model with drought index predictions outperformed multiple linear regression and single drought index, with higher prediction accuracy in semi-arid and semi-humid regions than in arid regions. Compared with the ground station drought indices, the drought map based on bias-corrected random forest shows visual and statistical consistency. Under the background of a non-homogeneous and complex surface environment, the model prediction results integrating environmental covariates performed best, and the method used in the study was effective and could be extended and applied. For areas where information is scarce, remote sensing data can be easily extended to regional scale monitoring, which can better achieve high-precision drought monitoring at the regional scale.

Abstract:As the most frequent and longest-lasting climate-related disasters, droughts are complex processes caused by hydrological imbalance, and have significant effects on ecosystem function and socioeconomic development. However, most conventional satellite-based drought indices and combined drought indices are mechanically constrained by the fact that they were developed and evaluated for a specific climate or critical ecological region, especially in China. A comprehensive drought index should be developed for extensive application in different climate-hydrology regions. To address this problem, an optimised principal component analysis method (PCA-RF) was proposed to support drought assessment across the transitional area between the humid and arid regions in central China, including the Loess Plateau (LP) and Qinling Mountains (QL). This method eliminated the causal relationships of non-linear changes for multi-aspect parameters such as land surface temperature, precipitation and soil moisture, and was used in developing a new index named "Meteorological drought index by PCA-RF methods (PMDI)". The results showed that PMDI had higher correlations and lower root mean square error than other drought indices (established using the empirical-weights method) with the 1-month standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI-1). That means PMDI performed well in meteorological drought monitoring. Additionally, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) were utilised to evaluate PMDI effectiveness in detecting vegetation response to drought, which represents agricultural drought. The results indicated that correlations between PMDI and vegetation indices (VIs) were stronger when severe or extreme droughts occurred, and that their relationships were affected by the high spatiotemporal heterogeneity in vegetation change over the LP and QL. Overall, PMDI was shown here to be a very suitable index for monitoring meteorological drought (short-term) and has effective action in capturing the response of vegetation signals to agriculture drought events (long-term). Given the excellent performance of PMDI in diverse climate-hydrology conditions of our study regions, we concluded that the PMDI has considerable potential as a drought monitoring methodology on a larger spatial scale.

Abstract:Drought is an extremely dangerous natural hazard that causes water crises, crop yield reduction, and ecosystem fires. Researchers have developed many drought indices based on ground-based climate data and various remote sensing data. Ground-based drought indices are more accurate but limited in coverage; while the remote sensing drought indices cover larger areas but have poor accuracy. Applying data-driven models to fuse multi-source remote sensing data for reproducing composite drought index may help fill this gap and better monitor drought in terms of spatial resolution. Machine learning methods can effectively analyze the hierarchical and non-linear relationships between the independent and dependent variables, resulting in better performance compared with traditional linear regression models. In this study, seven drought impact factors from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensor, Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used to reproduce the standard precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for Shandong province, China, from 2002 to 2020. Three machine learning methods, namely bias-corrected random forest (BRF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and support vector machines (SVM) were applied as regression models. Then, the best model was used to construct the spatial distribution of SPEI. The results show that the BRF outperforms XGBoost and SVM in SPEI estimation. The BRF model can effectively monitor drought conditions in areas without ground observation data. The BRF model provides comprehensive drought information by producing a spatial distribution of SPEI, which provides reliability for the BRF model to be applied in drought monitoring.

Abstract:By effectively observing the land surface and obtaining farmland conditions, satellite remote sensing has played an essential role in agricultural drought monitoring over past decades. Among all remote sensing techniques, optical and thermal remote sensing have the most extended history of being utilized in drought monitoring. The primary goal of this paper is to illustrate how optical and thermal remote sensing have been and will be applied in the monitoring, assessment, and prediction of agricultural drought. We group the methods into four categories: optical, thermal, optical and thermal, and multi-source. For each category, a concise explanation is given to show the inherent mechanisms. We pay special attention to solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, which has great potential in early drought detection. Finally, we look at the future directions of agricultural drought monitoring, including (1) early detection; (2) spatio-temporal resolution; (3) organic combination of multi-source data; and (4) smart prediction and assessment based on deep learning and cloud computing.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is the implementation of Perpendicular Drought Index (PDI), a simple, effective drought monitoring tool, in integrated remote sensing supporting system (IRSSS) for parameter retrieval and drought estimation.According to the COM rule, the IRSSS developed a particular interface in order to guarantee the users add new function module or file I/O driver by themselves. This paper introduces the implementation of PDI using C++ program language. There are four steps designed to complete the task. The general process and purpose of every step is explained and especially the method of finding soil point and memory management is introduced as the key technology.The paper also presents the results of evaluated drought situation of Ningxia Huizu Autonomous Region of China that indicates accordance with regional hydro-environmental data.
Agricultural Drought Monitoring Using an Enhanced Soil Water Deficit Index Derived from Remote Sensing and Model Data Merging

Abstract:Droughts present substantial challenges to agriculture, food security, and water resources. Employing a drought index based on soil moisture dynamics is a common and effective approach for agricultural drought monitoring. However, the precision of a drought index heavily relies on accurate soil moisture and soil hydraulic parameters. This study leverages remote sensing soil moisture data from the Climate Change Initiative (CCI) series products and model-generated soil moisture data from the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model. The extended triple collocation (ETC) method was applied to merge these datasets from 1992 to 2018, resulting in enhanced accuracy by 28% and 15% compared to the CCI and VIC soil moisture, respectively. Furthermore, this research establishes field capacity and a wilting point map using multiple soil datasets and pedotransfer functions, facilitating the development of an enhanced Soil Water Deficit Index (SWDI) based on merged soil moisture, field capacity, and wilting points. The findings reveal that the proposed enhanced SWDI achieves a higher accuracy in detecting agricultural drought events (probability of detection = 0.98) and quantifying their severity (matching index = 0.33) compared to an SWDI based on other soil moisture products. Moreover, the enhanced SWDI exhibits superior performance in representing drought-affected crop areas (correlation coefficient = 0.88), outperforming traditional drought indexes such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (correlation coefficient = 0.51), the Soil Moisture Anomaly Percent Index (correlation coefficient = 0.81), and the Soil Moisture Index (correlation coefficient = 0.83). The enhanced SWDI effectively captures the spatiotemporal dynamics of a drought, supporting more accurate agricultural drought monitoring and management strategies.

A synthesized drought monitoring model based on multi-source remote sensing data

Abstract:As global climate change become more complex, accurately monitoring the impact of drought on main grain producing areas in North China Plain has important guiding implication for regional agricultural production planning. The conventional remote sensing methods only monitor single drought response factors such as soil,vegetation. This method does not reflect the comprehensive information of drought. Based on the soil water stress, vegetation growth status and precipitation deficit in drought developing process, a synthesized drought monitoring model was developed using spatial data mining techniques and multi-source remote sensing data includingMODIS and TRMM. For assessing the accuracy of this drought monitoring model, a validation experiment was conducted in Shandong province. The results showed that the main drought events monitored by this model in recent years were consistent with observed droughts in Shandong province. The Synthesized Drought Index (SDI), a drought indicator produced by the model, not only includes agricultural drought informaion but also includes meteorological drought informaion. In the wheat growing period (March-May), the correlation coefficient of accumulated monthly SDI with crop yield as a standardized variable all were exceeding 0.7 (P<0.05) in Heze, Liaocheng and Dezhou, three main wheat producing cities of Shandong province. SDI was negatively correlated with drought affected crop area. The correlation coefficient of monthly SDI with drought affected crop area in wheat (March-May) and maize (July-September) growing period are between-0.67--0.85 and all passed significance test (P<0.01) except March (P<0.05). The SDI was also significantly correlated with meteorological drought index. In wheat and maize growing period, the correlation coefficients between monthly SDI and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) are between 0.44-0.67 and all correlation coefficients passed P<0.01 significance test except March. This work provides a new approach to comprehensive assessing regional drought.

Abstract:Using remote sensing data to monitor large area drought is one of the important methods of drought monitoring at present. However, the traditional remote sensing drought monitoring methods mainly focus on monitoring single drought response factors such as soil moisture or vegetation status, and the research on comprehensive multi-factor drought monitoring is limited. In order to improve the ability to resist drought events, this paper takes Henan Province of China as an example, takes multi-source remote sensing data as data sources, considers various disaster-causing factors, adopts random forest method to model, and explores the method of regional remote sensing comprehensive drought monitoring using various remote sensing data sources. Compared with neural network, classification regression tree and linear regression, the performance of random forest is more stable and tolerant to noise and outliers. In order to provide a new method for comprehensive assessment of regional drought, a comprehensive drought monitoring model was established based on multi-source remote sensing data, which comprehensively considered the drought factors such as soil water stress, vegetation growth status and meteorological precipitation profit and loss in the process of drought occurrence and development.

Abstract:Agricultural drought is a significant factor in impacting the agricultural yield. It is a big challenge to monitor agricultural drought as it is an abstract concept rather than a measurable variable. A lot of models are invented to capture the sign of its traces. The pros and cons of each product varies case by case. This paper used a combination of the existing cyberinfrastructure to streamline the retrieval, visualization, comparison, and validation of the drought products. Multiple software including GADMFS, US Drought Monitor, and NOAA STAR vegetation health index system have been used to support the workflow. The involved data includes not only the model outputs but also the ground truth data collected onsite. The functions and tools will allow the visualization of the multisource and format-disparate data in one place and facilitate the comparison and validation side by side. The web-based feature permits users to directly manipulate the data without download and software installation. The feedbacks of users show the approach as a promising way in significantly improving the efficiency of model comparison and validation in agricultural monitoring community.

Abstract:Drought was a chronic, natural disaster, and Remote sensing drought monitoring had become a potential research field. In the present, short-wave infrared and red bands which sensitive to moisture variation were selected to monitor farmland drought conditions by analyzing the spectral characteristics of vegetation and soil. The goal of this paper was to provide a new method of drought monitoring--normalized drought monitoring index (NPDI), based on new constructed spectrum feature space by the difference of SWIR and Red and the sum of SWIR and Red. Field surveyed soil moisture verified NPDI model, and the result showed that NDPI and MPDI model could effectively monitor agricultural drought, and that had high correlation with soil moisture. The R2 was 0.583 and 0.438 with soil water of 10 cm. The monitoring effect of NPDI model was better than the MPDL. This model was further improvement to PDI and MPDI, and it could monitor the drought condition of different vegetation coverage and whole growing season. It has high application potential and popularization value.

Abstract:Drought is the costliest disaster around the world and in China as well. Northeastern China is one of China’s most important major grain producing areas. Frequent droughts have harmed the agriculture of this region and further threatened national food security. Therefore, the timely and effective monitoring of drought is extremely important. In this study, the passive microwave remote sensing soil moisture data, i.e., the SMOS soil moisture (SMOS-SM) product, was compared to several in situ meteorological indices through Pearson correlation analysis to assess the performance of SMOS-SM in monitoring drought in northeastern China. Then, maps based on SMOS-SM and in situ indices were created for July from 2010 to 2015 to identify the spatial pattern of drought distributions. Our results showed that the SMOS-SM product had relatively high correlation with in situ indices, especially SPI and SPEI values of a nine-month scale for the growing season. The drought patterns shown on maps generated from SPI-9, SPEI-9 and sc-PDSI were also successfully captured using the SMOS-SM product. We found that the SMOS-SM product effectively monitored drought patterns in northeastern China, and this capacity would be enhanced when field capacity information became available.
