Abstract:Background: Hand is one of the most important and common parts of the body. Hand dysfunction caused by hemiplegia and hand injury is difficult to restore, which leads to high disability rates. The patients' daily life and work ability are seriously affected. With the aging of the society, the number of stroke patients with hemiplegia is gradually increasing. The research and application of the robot with the combination of robot and assistive rehabilitation therapy have come into being. Hand function rehabilitation robot has more practical value. It can simulate the human hand’s movements to realize the rehabilitation training of human hands. Objective: To give a general summary of recent hand function rehabilitation robot, and a presentation of their respective characteristics including drive type and rehabilitation training mode. Methods: This paper summarizes various patents and research developments about hand function rehabilitation robot. From the aspects of structural characteristics, drive type and rehabilitation training mode and applications situation, the advantages and disadvantages of the typical hand function rehabilitation robots are represented. Results: Current and future development trends on the structural characteristics, drive type and rehabilitation training mode and applications situation of hand function rehabilitation robots are discussed to improve the humanization, marketization, modularization and intelligence of the hand function rehabilitation robot. Conclusion: Considerable attention has been paid onto the hand function rehabilitation robot. Hand function rehabilitation robot can effectively improve the hand function of patients' and the elderly's the actual quality of life and family well-being. Further improvements are needed in the aspects of hand biomechanics, neurophysiology, rehabilitation training mode, actuators and sensors, physical manmachine interaction and ergonomics of the hand function rehabilitation robot. More patents on hand function rehabilitation robot should be invented. Enhancing Upper Limb Function and Motor Skills Post-Stroke Through an Upper Limb Rehabilitation Robot

Abstract:Cerebrovascular accidents, commonly known as strokes, represent a prevalent neurological event leading to significant upper limb disabilities, thereby profoundly affecting individuals' activities of daily living and diminishing their quality of life. Traditional rehabilitation methods for upper limb recovery post-stroke are often hindered by limitations, including therapist and patient fatigue, reliance on singular training methodologies, and lack of sustained motivation. Addressing these challenges, this study introduces an upper limb rehabilitation robot, which uses intelligent feedback motion control to improve therapeutic outcomes. The system is distinguished by its capability to adjust the direction and magnitude of force feedback dynamically, based on the detection of spastic movements during exercises, thereby offering a tailored therapeutic experience. This system is equipped with four distinct training modes, intelligent assessment of joint range of motion, and the ability to personalize training programs. Moreover, it provides an immersive interactive gaming experience coupled with comprehensive safety measures. This multifaceted approach not only elevates the engagement and interest of participants beyond traditional rehabilitation protocols but also demonstrates significant improvements in upper limb functionality and the activities of daily living among hemiplegic patients. The system exemplifies an advanced tool in upper limb rehabilitation, offering a synergistic blend of precision, personalization, and interactive engagement, thereby broadening the therapeutic options available to stroke survivors.
[Contributions of robotic devices to upper limb poststroke rehabilitation]

Abstract:Introduction: Poststroke rehabilitation care has evolved considerably over the last decade. The emergence of the concepts of brain plasticity and motor learning has led to the development of new therapeutic approaches. Most of the new strategies are based on movement therapy, which can have a real impact on neurological recovery, sometimes with significant functional benefit for the patient. State of the art: In this context of evolving practices, the hemiplegic arm is the subject of special attention. Considering the often unfavorable "natural" prognosis and the relatively limited impact of conventional therapies; researchers have focused work on new alternatives. Cooperation between developers of technological advances and the medical community has led to the development of innovative therapeutic options often based on the use of specific technological tools (functional electric stimulation, virtual reality, transcranial magnetic stimulation...) to solicit or facilitate movement. Perspectives/conclusion: Robot-assisted rehabilitation lies within this scope. The positive results reported in the most recent publications and the growing interest for this type of therapy in the fields of medical and engineering research should open the way for extremely promising prospects. The technological performance of new robots has nevertheless raised a large number of unanswered questions, implying a significant amount of further research.
Molecular and biochemical characterization of a calcium/calmodulin-binding protein kinase from rice.

Abstract:A Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)-binding protein kinase from rice ( Oryza sativa ), OsCBK, has been characterized that lacks Ca2+-binding EF hands and has Ca2+/CaM-independent autophosphorylation and substrate-phosphorylation activity. OsCBK has all 11 subdomains of a kinase catalytic domain and a putative CaM-binding domain, and shares high identity with Ca2+-dependent-protein-kinase ('CDPK')-related protein kinases in plants. OsCBK bound CaM in a Ca2+-dependent manner as previously reported for Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases in animals, but autophosphorylation and phosphorylation of histone IIIs were Ca2+/CaM-independent. Surface plasmon resonance analysis showed that OsCBK specifically bound CaM with high affinity ( K (D)=30 nM). Capillary electrophoresis showed that phosphorylation of OsCBK occurred on serine and threonine residues. These data show that OsCBK is a serine/threonine protein kinase that binds Ca2+/CaM, but whose enzymic activity is independent of Ca2+/CaM. In situ hybridization showed that OsCBK is expressed in reproductive and vegetative tissues of rice and shows temporal and spatial changes during plant growth and development. OsCBK is highly expressed in zones of cell division and it is particularly abundant in sporogenous cells of the anther at meiosis.

Abstract:Background: In China, there are more than 2 million patients with hand function impairment caused by trauma and stroke each year. Since the hand is an important sensory and motor organ of the human body, the loss of hand function seriously affects people's daily activities and work. The current hand function rehabilitation robots are mainly rigid. The rigid robot has the problems of fixed rehabilitation track, high rigidity, and poor comfort. To solve this series of problems, soft hand function rehabilitation robots have been vigorously developed. Objective: To introduce the classification, advantages and disadvantages, and development trend of existing soft hand rehabilitation robots. To provide for other researchers to understand its development status and future development trends. Methods: The various products and patents of soft hand rehabilitation robots are summarized, and the structural features, merits, and demerits of typical soft hand rehabilitation robots are introduced. Results: By analyzing a variety of soft hand function rehabilitation robots, the characteristics and the current problems of soft hand function rehabilitation robots are determined, the development trend of soft hand function rehabilitation robots has been prospected, the current research status of soft hand function rehabilitation robots are discussed and the prospects are carried out. Conclusion: Because the rate of increase in patients with hand function loss is much greater than that of rehabilitation physicians, many patients cannot receive timely and effective treatment. Therefore, hand function rehabilitation robots have received people's attention. Compared with rigid rehabilitation robots, soft hand function rehabilitation robots have diverse rehabilitation trajectories, high comfort, and low rigidity, so it is very necessary to develop soft hand function rehabilitation robots. In the future, soft hand function rehabilitation robots will inevitably develop towards simplification of structure, more comfortable wearing, economical, diversified functions, better curative effect, and safer development.

Abstract:It is well understood that motor dysfunctions in patients can be restored through a certain amount of repetitive training. Robots and virtual reality offer an excellent solution to incentivize and optimize training intensity while also reducing the workload for therapists. In this paper, leveraging virtual reality technologies and haptic robots, we have developed a cost-effective robot-assisted training system and three training exercises for hand rehabilitation. The Unity game engine was utilized to create training scenarios where hand avatars interact with virtual objects. Off-the-shelf haptic robots were employed to manipulate the hand avatars, enabling completion of training tasks with a realistic tactile experience. Haptic feedback is rendered using impedance control laws. Additionally, to address the needs of both patients and therapists we propose to employ robot-assisted force and feedback force. These mechanisms are designed to provide assistance to patients during tasks if needs and to transmit the patient's force feedback to the therapist, facilitating comprehensive interaction and communication between the two parties. Several experiments were conducted involving six healthy subjects, who used electrode stimulation to simulate impaired limbs, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed training frameworks.

Abstract:Abstract Background Hand rehabilitation is core to helping stroke survivors regain activities of daily living. Recent studies have suggested that the use of electroencephalography-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI) can promote this process. Here, we report the first systematic examination of the literature on the use of BCI-robot systems for the rehabilitation of fine motor skills associated with hand movement and profile these systems from a technical and clinical perspective. Methods A search for January 2010–October 2019 articles using Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, PEDro, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore and Cochrane Library databases was performed. The selection criteria included BCI-hand robotic systems for rehabilitation at different stages of development involving tests on healthy participants or people who have had a stroke. Data fields include those related to study design, participant characteristics, technical specifications of the system, and clinical outcome measures. Results 30 studies were identified as eligible for qualitative review and among these, 11 studies involved testing a BCI-hand robot on chronic and subacute stroke patients. Statistically significant improvements in motor assessment scores relative to controls were observed for three BCI-hand robot interventions. The degree of robot control for the majority of studies was limited to triggering the device to perform grasping or pinching movements using motor imagery. Most employed a combination of kinaesthetic and visual response via the robotic device and display screen, respectively, to match feedback to motor imagery. Conclusion 19 out of 30 studies on BCI-robotic systems for hand rehabilitation report systems at prototype or pre-clinical stages of development. We identified large heterogeneity in reporting and emphasise the need to develop a standard protocol for assessing technical and clinical outcomes so that the necessary evidence base on efficiency and efficacy can be developed.

Abstract:Our goal is to apply robotics and automation technology to assist, quantify, enhance, and verify neuro-rehabilitation. In this paper a novel robot neuro-rehabilitation for upper limb, with many merits, is developed. Mechanism and control of the robot are introduced in detail. By a clinical trial involving 30 stroke patients with three months at Rehabilitation Center of China, some results are obtained 1) robot-aided therapy does not have adverse effects, 2) patients can accept the procedure, 3) the therapy may reduce muscular tension, and 4) manipulation of the impaired upper limb may influence brain recovery. Some new ideas are also presented to make rehabilitation therapy more effectively. These ideas will be helpful to further quicken the development of the robot neuro-rehabilitation

Abstract:Several rehabilitation robots for upper limbs have been introduced so far, and their clinical effectiveness has been reported in many studies on recovery of motor abilities in the aged or poststroke patients. These studies, however, found little evidence of improving the functional abilities of patients. Moreover, it has been identified that the main problem of robot-assisted stroke rehabilitation is the lack of motivating and versatile robot-assisted exercises. In this article, we discuss the development of a novel upper limb rehabilitation robot integrated with video games. Our solution is operated via a novel human computer interface, which stimulates shoulder, elbow movements, and fine finger movements. It is capable to train patients with partially recovered motor control ability. The interface enables therapists to select motivating and engaging motor training exercises represented as video games and specify rehabilitation exercises for patients using a grasping and upper limb interface. The paper presents concept of this novel interface, discusses the implementation issues and demonstrates technical and practical feasibility of our concept through a number of application examples.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that early treatment is an effective way in improving body's function of the stroke patients. This paper reviews the background of the rehabilitation theory and some typical products of lower limb rehabilitation robots. Lower limb rehabilitation robots have been drawn into rehabilitation training. Researchers have done large amounts of rehabilitation training experiments based on these rehabilitation robots. This paper reviews some representative articles. Abundant clinical trials show that robot-assisted rehabilitation therapy is more effective than conventional therapy in Functional Ambulatory Capacity (FAC), walking speed, step length, etc. However, there are few lower limb rehabilitation robots directing at patients in early stage (the first 3 months after illness) in the domestic and international markets. Therefore, lower limb rehabilitation robot for acute and subacute stroke patients is a promising research area in the future. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract:Stroke is one of the leading causes for disability worldwide. Motor function deficits due to stroke affect the patients' mobility, their limitation in daily life activities, their participation in society and their odds of returning to professional activities. All of these factors contribute to a low overall quality of life. Rehabilitation training is the most effective way to reduce motor impairments in stroke patients. This multiple systematic review focuses both on standard treatment methods and on innovating rehabilitation techniques used to promote upper extremity motor function in stroke patients. A total number of 5712 publications on stroke rehabilitation was systematically reviewed for relevance and quality with regards to upper extremity motor outcome. This procedure yielded 270 publications corresponding to the inclusion criteria of the systematic review. Recent technology-based interventions in stroke rehabilitation including non-invasive brain stimulation, robot-assisted training, and virtual reality immersion are addressed. Finally, a decisional tree based on evidence from the literature and characteristics of stroke patients is proposed. At present, the stroke rehabilitation field faces the challenge to tailor evidence-based treatment strategies to the needs of the individual stroke patient. Interventions can be combined in order to achieve the maximal motor function recovery for each patient. Though the efficacy of some interventions may be under debate, motor skill learning, and some new technological approaches give promising outcome prognosis in stroke motor rehabilitation.

Abstract:People with movement disorders are plagued with debilitating conditions, which significantly degrade their quality of life. Traditional rehabilitation typically involves intensive interaction between patients and therapists. While effective, traditional rehabilitation cannot keep abreast of the increasing patient population primarily attributed to a higher surviving rate after diseases and/or injuries. Furthermore, patients living in the rural areas have fairly limited access to rehabilitation services. In the past two decades, tremendous efforts have been put into developing rehabilitation and assistive robots to facilitate the rehabilitation training while relieving the physical involvement of therapists and/or lowering the related cost. Most notably, the rehabilitation and assistive robots have been significantly advanced with developments in actuators, sensors, microprocessors, and mobile software platforms. However, unlike traditional robotics, the intimate interaction between robot and human in rehabilitation robots indicates that the success is also closely related to a thorough understanding of the human neuromuscular aspects and human-machine interaction. This special issue primarily aims to gather the latest achievements in rehabilitation robots, exoskeletons, and prostheses including the following topics: (a) development of rehabilitation robots, exoskeleton, and upper/lower limb prostheses driven by bionics; (b) functional evaluation of rehabilitation robots, exoskeleton, and upper/lower limb prostheses with an emphasis on human movement biomechanics; (c) musculoskeletal modeling and simulation of human movements while wearing exoskeleton or prostheses; (d) noninvasive human-machine interface based on electromyography and/or electroencephalogram; (e) sensors for monitoring kinematics/kinetics, as well as biological signals in real time; (f) innovative actuators and control algorithms applied to rehabilitation robots, exoskeletons, and prostheses. In this special issue, collective studies address the aforementioned key elements via both technical and biomechanical approaches. A reconfigurable robotic hand exoskeleton was proposed to meet the fast growing need in hand rehabilitation. A novel control algorithm integrating sliding model control with cerebellar model articulation controller neural network was implemented in lower limb exoskeleton to enhance the coordination between patient and exoskeleton. An upper limb exoskeleton was enhanced with integrated optical cameras to offer more accurate estimation of joint posture than traditional motion capture system. A hybrid upper limb rehabilitation system consisting of a shoulder-elbow-forearm exoskeleton and a robotic manipulator was validated and tested in the clinic. The characteristics of muscle-tendon stimulation such as perception threshold and vibration frequency significantly influenced the muscle forces as well as the reaction time. Patellar retention was found to be superior to patellar replacement in knee arthroplasty via a comprehensive computer simulation. These collective studies, as part of the latest representative work, offered some new insights into the development and implementation of rehabilitation and assistive robots. Abstract:Stroke is a significant cause of disability worldwide, and stroke survivors often experience severe motor impairments. Lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots provide support and balance for stroke survivors and assist them in performing rehabilitation training tasks, which can effectively improve their quality of life during the later stages of stroke recovery. Lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots have become a hot topic in rehabilitation therapy research. This review introduces traditional rehabilitation assessment methods, explores the possibility of lower limb exoskeleton robots combining sensors and electrophysiological signals to assess stroke survivors' rehabilitation objectively, summarizes standard human-robot coupling models of lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots in recent years, and critically introduces adaptive control models based on motion intent recognition for lower limb exoskeleton robots. This provides new design ideas for the future combination of lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots with rehabilitation assessment, motion assistance, rehabilitation treatment, and adaptive control, making the rehabilitation assessment process more objective and addressing the shortage of rehabilitation therapists to some extent. Finally, the article discusses the current limitations of adaptive control of lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots for stroke survivors and proposes new research directions.

Abstract:Hand rehabilitation is critical to the recovery of post-stroke patients. However, designing a modular mechanism of the hand to improve the human-machine compatibility and precision of operation is still a challenge. This paper proposes a new type of hand exoskeleton rehabilitation robot with nine degrees of freedom. With the flexible rods, the passive range of motion for finger adduction/abduction is extended under the premise of independent flexion/extension of the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joint. Based on hand anatomy, the relationship between the offset of the metacarpophalangeal joint and the body height in the process of flexion and extension is discussed, and it is applied to the structure optimization and control system. The genetic algorithm is employed to achieve the size optimization, and the kinematics is analyzed. Finally, a prototype is built and preliminary experiments are carried out, including the range of motion and the grasping ability of the robot. The experimental results show that the robot can realize the patients' hand rehabilitation function and has certain adaptability.

Abstract:Stroke is a significant contributor to global mortality and disability, and it is typically classified as a neurological disorder. A key component of stroke rehabilitation is improving upper limb function to reduce impairments and disabilities and their impact on activities of daily living. In the last few years, robot-assisted therapy (RT) arises as a novel and expanding approach in poststroke rehabilitation, which utilizes robotic devices to facilitate the recovery of motor function and task-oriented training. The aim of this systematic review, conducted through MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE consultation, was to investigate the association between functional outcomes of the upper limb in patients with stroke after-effects and the use of robotic rehabilitation.The results of the included studies have highlighted the impact of robot-assisted rehabilitation, whether integrated with traditional physiotherapy, on several clinical outcomes such as pain, spasticity, motor function, hand and finger function and cognitive abilities. The introduction of the robot-assisted intervention, coupled with traditional treatment, maybe a valuable approach to improving quality of life and enhance not only motor function but also the cognitive ability of stroke patients, especially whether focusing on the early phase of stroke recovery with a high potential impact on clinical practice. Abstract:Various conditions, including traffic accidents, sports injuries, and neurological disorders, can impair human wrist movements, underscoring the importance of effective rehabilitation methods. Robotic devices play a crucial role in this regard, particularly in wrist rehabilitation, given the complexity of the human wrist joint, which encompasses three degrees of freedom: flexion/extension, pronation/supination, and radial/ulnar deviation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of wrist rehabilitation devices, employing a methodological approach based on primary articles sourced from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and IEEE, using the keywords "wrist rehabilitation robot" from 2007 onwards. Particularly noteworthy is the integration of serious games with simplified wrist rehabilitation devices, signaling a promising avenue for enhancing rehabilitation outcomes. These insights lay the groundwork for the development of new robotic wrist rehabilitation devices or to make improvements to existing prototypes incorporating a forward-looking approach to improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Abstract:There are many hemiplegic patients with hand dysfunction caused by stroke. Restoring hand function can effectively improve the quality of life of patients. Traditional rehabilitation training can improve hand strength and flexibility, but there are few medical staff and high workload, which may easily lead to unstable training effect. Therefore, this letter designed a soft hand rehabilitation robot with multiple training modes. By analyzing the natural movements of human fingers, the flexible exoskeleton finger and driving unit are designed. The kinematics of the finger are derived to achieve uniform changes in the angle of the finger joints. The hand rehabilitation robot can support multiple training modes such as individual finger training, five-finger collaborative training, and left-right hand symmetry training. Experiments show that the hand rehabilitation robot can carry out continuous and stable finger joint training, and has a good rehabilitation training effect.

Abstract:Stroke is a common disease that can cause injury to humankind’s neuron systems all over the world. To help these patients with their motor rehabilitation, applying Brain-Computer interface (BCI) technology has recently become a popular approach. One innovative method of using BCI technology to help patients regain motor ability is to develop a BCIs-controlled external robotic arm system. This paper aims to summarize some of the research focusing on this field, analyze their outstanding points and drawbacks, and provide several ways to improve this system. First, the author gives a brief introduction of BCIs controlled external robotic arm. After that, the author analyzes several advantages and disadvantages of this system and then gives some potential solutions, the fNIRS-EEG BCI and three implanting methods. Finally, the author discusses these previous studies and provides some potential future directions in advancing the BCIs-controlled external robotic arm system. In this review, the author mainly focuses on some previous approaches based on research and studies. By stressing the drawbacks and difficulties of each technique, the author comes up with other methods related to these latest studies. After that, the author combines these points together and reaches some new potential directions. The research contained in this review covers the past five years, from 2018 to 2023.

Abstract:Stroke is the major cause of permanent adult disability worldwide. Often stroke affects the motor control of the upper limb, leading to difficulties in performing activities of daily living. Many hours are spent in resource-intensive therapy to regain functionality of the upper limb. In order to decrease the burden to therapists and increase access to rehabilitation, an upper limb rehabilitation robotic device was developed. Observations from therapists and an international survey of stroke therapists were conducted to understand general requirements of an upper limb rehabilitation device. These requirements were the basis of the mechanical design portion of the prototype. The prototype was evaluated with stroke therapists in a focus group. Although more iterations of design, testing and evaluation are needed, this project is a step in developing a lower cost, portable device to increase access to upper limb stroke rehabilitation.
