Abstract:This study attempted to assess the reproducibility of 2D and 3D forensic methods for facial depiction from skeletal remains (2D sketch, 3D manual, 3D automated, 3D computer-assisted). In a blind study, thirteen practitioners produced fourteen facial depictions, using the same skull model derived from CT data of a living donor, a biological profile and relevant soft tissue data. The facial depictions were compared to the donor subject using three different evaluation methods: 3D geometric, 2D face recognition ranking and familiar resemblance ratings. Five of the 3D facial depictions (all 3D methods) demonstrated a deviation error within ±2 mm for ≥50% of the total face surface. Overall, no single 3D method (manual, computer assisted, automated) produced consistently high results across all three evaluations. 2D comparisons with a facial photograph of the donor were carried out for all the 2D and 3D facial depictions using four freely available face recognition algorithms (Toolpie; Photomyne; Face ++; Amazon). The 2D sketch method produced the highest ranked matches to the donor photograph, with overall ranking in the top six. Only one 3D facial depiction was ranked highly in both the 3D geometric and 2D face recognition comparisons. The majority (67%) of the facial depictions were rated as limited or moderate resemblance by the familiar examiner. Only one 2D facial depiction was rated as strong resemblance, whilst two 2D sketches and two 3D facial depictions were rated as good resemblances by the familiar examiner. The four most geometrically accurate 3D facial depictions were only rated as limited or moderate resemblance to the donor by the familiar examiner. The results suggest that where a consistent facial depiction method is utilised, we can expect relatively consistent metric reliability between practitioners. However, presentation standards for practitioners would greatly enhance the possibility of recognition in forensic scenarios.

Abstract:This paper reports on integration of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) balance chips with aerosol inertial impactors for real-time monitoring of airborne particulate matter. Cascade inertial impactors have been extensively used for sampling and size separation of micro to nano-size airborne particles since they were first used in 1945. To introduce the real-time measurement capability to such tools, herein, MEMS resonator chips are employed as their impaction substrates. Dual-plate thermal-piezoresistive resonators (TPRs), that are shown to operate as promising mass balances, are integrated within a two-stage custom made aerosol impactor capable of size segregating particles down to a few tens of nanometers. Unlike cantilever-based microbalances or resonators operating in their bulk mode, TPRs provide uniform mass sensitivity over a big portion of their surface area. Upon deposition of airborne particles on the resonant sensors, the mass loading on each sensor and as a result the mass concentrations of size-segregated particles is measured in real-time. The air quality of different environments, including a class 10,000 cleanroom, was analyzed and monitored via the real-time impactor over a four day period. Comparison of the results with those of an optical particle counter demonstrates a clear correlation between the system response and the expected particle counts. Compared to existing optical particle counters, the proposed system offers the added advantage of detecting sub-100nm particles.
3D face reconstruction from mugshots: Application to arbitrary view face recognition

Abstract:Mugshots while routinely acquired by law enforcement agencies are under utilized by automated face recognition systems. In this paper, we propose a regression based approach to reconstruct textured full 3D face models from multi-view mugshot images. Using landmarks from the input frontal and profile mugshots of a subject, our method reconstructs his<math>⧹</math>her 3D face shape via either linear or nonlinear regressors. The texture of the mugshot images is mapped to the reconstructed 3D face shape via an efficient seamless texture recovery scheme. Compared with existing 3D face reconstruction methods, the proposed method more effectively utilizes the three-view mugshot face images collected during booking. The reconstructed 3D faces are used to generate realistic multi-view face images to enlarge the gallery and facilitate arbitrary view face recognition. Evaluation experiments have been done on BFM and Bosphorus databases in terms of reconstruction accuracy, and on Multi-PIE and Color FERET databases in terms of recognition accuracy. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the 3D face reconstruction error of the best competitive method from <math>2.31mm</math> to <math>1.88mm</math>, and improve the recognition accuracy of state-of-the-art deep learning based face matchers by as much as <math>∼4%</math> on Multi-PIE and <math>∼2%</math> on Color FERET despite the high baseline set by them.

Abstract:Facial reproduction validation uses the methodology typical of forensic anthropology to confirm the accuracy of three-dimensional reproductions of faces. Achieving high accuracy in virtual facial reproductions is still under study. In the present paper, the Tenchini collection, which contains wax reproductions of prisoners' faces and their skulls, was used. By creating facial reproductions on skulls from this collection, the result was compared with the real face of the person to whom the skull belongs. The three-dimensional volume of each examined skull of Tenchini collection was acquired via CT scan and photogrammetry. Subsequently, the virtual reproduction of each skull was processed using three-dimensional graphics software (ZBrush, Pixologic®). The morphological comparison parameters used in the field of personal identification by forensic anthropology were used. The blind procedure required the operator to see the mask subsequent to the facial reproduction phase, so that the facial reproduction cannot exploit the information that knowledge of the mask would have produced. The parameters used in the study of facial reproductions have shown discrepancies between the characteristics of the masks and the facial reproductions, partly expected because due to the lack of soft tissue on the skull. However, a high degree of accuracy in the facial reproductions performed due to the applied methodology was documented. The present study allowed us to observe how these parameters can be useful to study the accuracy of facial reproduction and identify what difficulties are encountered in producing a result close to the real appearance.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial intelligence is already all around us, and its usage will only increase. Knowing its capabilities is critical. A facial recognition system (FRS) is a tool for law enforcement during suspect searches and when presenting photos to eyewitnesses for identification. However, there are no comparisons between eyewitness and FRS accuracy using video, so it is unknown whether FRS face matches are more accurate than eyewitness memory when identifying a perpetrator. Ours is the first application of artificial intelligence to an eyewitness experience, using a comparative psychology approach. As a first step to test system accuracy relative to eyewitness accuracy, participants and an open-source FRS (FaceNet) attempted perpetrator identification/match from lineup photos (target-present, target-absent) after exposure to real crime videos with varied clarity and perpetrator race. FRS used video probe images of each perpetrator to achieve similarity ratings for each corresponding lineup member. Using receiver operating characteristic analysis to measure discriminability, FRS performance was superior to eyewitness performance, regardless of video clarity or perpetrator race. Video clarity impacted participant performance, with the unclear videos yielding lower performance than the clear videos. Using confidence-accuracy characteristic analysis to measure reliability (i.e., the likelihood the identified suspect is the actual perpetrator), when the FRS identified faces with the highest similarity values, they were accurate. The results suggest FaceNet, or similarly performing systems, may supplement eyewitness memory for suspect searches and subsequent lineup construction and knowing the system’s strengths and weaknesses is critical.

Abstract:FixL's are chimeric heme protein kinases from symbiotic nitrogen-fixing Rhizobia. We have overexpressed three FixL variants in Escherichia coli. Bradyrhizobium japonicum FixL, a soluble dimeric protein, is the first full-length FixL to be purified. The other two proteins are soluble truncations of Rhizobium meliloti FixL, which is a membrane protein. One contains both heme and kinase domains and is dimeric; the other has only the heme domain and is monomeric. We find that all the FixL's bind oxygen and carbon monoxide non-cooperatively, with very low affinities due entirely to slow association rates. FixL P50's for oxygen are 17-76 mmHg. FixL's may sense nitric oxide and carbon monoxide in addition to oxygen, especially at the low oxygen pressures encountered in vivo. Autoxidation rates are about 50 times faster than that of sperm whale myoglobin. The carbon monoxide affinity of FixL's is about 300 times lower than that of myoglobin, resulting in the unusually low values of 7.5-17 for the partition constant, M = P50(O2)/P50(CO), between carbon monoxide and oxygen. Met-FixL's have their Soret absorption maximum at 395 nm instead of the typical 408 nm and a steep hydroxymet transition at pH > or = 9.3; these properties indicate a pentacoordinated high-spin ferric heme and suggest a sterically hindered hydrophobic heme pocket lacking a distal (E7) histidine. FixL is the first member of a new class of heme proteins, the heme-based sensors, distinct from the oxygen carriers and electron transporters. We expect that some of the novel properties of FixL will be characteristic of the class.
A computerized facial approximation method for Homo sapiens based on facial soft tissue thickness depths and geometric morphometrics

Abstract:We quantify detailed craniofacial relationships between facial bone and soft tissues and present a computerized facial approximation method. A smaller resemblance comparison and a greater recognition rate demonstrate that average facial soft tissue thickness depths at landmarks and semilandmarks contribute to raising the accuracy of approximated faces. Relatively weaker correlations and greater approximation errors suggest that the approximated nose and mouth soft tissue shapes need to be used with caution. Facial approximation (FA) provides a promising means of generating the possible facial appearance of a deceased person. It facilitates exploration of the evolutionary forces driving anatomical changes in ancestral humans and can capture public attention. Despite the recent progress made toward improving the performance of FA methods, a limited understanding of detailed quantitative craniofacial relationships between facial bone and soft tissue morphology may hinder their accuracy, and hence subjective experience and artistic interpretation are required. In this study, we explored craniofacial relationships among human populations based upon average facial soft tissue thickness depths (FSTDs) and covariations between hard and soft tissues of the nose and mouth using geometric morphometrics. Furthermore, we proposed a computerized method to assign the learned craniofacial relationships to generate a probable facial appearance of Homo sapiens, reducing human intervention. A smaller resemblance comparison (an average Procrustes distance was 0.0258 and an average Euclidean distance was 1.79 mm) between approximated and actual faces and a greater recognition rate (91.67%) tested by a face pool indicated that average dense FSTDs contributed to raising the accuracy of approximated faces. Results of partial least squares (PLS) analysis showed that nasal and oral hard tissues have an effect on their soft tissues separately. However, relatively weaker RV correlations (<0.4) and greater approximation errors suggested that we need to be cautious about the accuracy of the approximated nose and mouth soft tissue shapes from bony structures. Overall, the proposed method can facilitate investigations of craniofacial relationships and potentially improve the reliability of the approximated faces for use in numerous applications in forensic science, archaeology, and anthropology.

An Evaluation of Forensic Facial Recognition

Abstract:Recent advances in machine learning and computer vision have led to reported facial recognition accuracies surpassing human performance. We question if these systems will translate to real-world forensic scenarios in which a potentially low-resolution, low-quality, partially-occluded image is compared against a standard facial database. We describe the construction of a large-scale synthetic facial dataset along with a controlled facial forensic lineup, the combination of which allows for a controlled evaluation of facial recognition under a range of real-world conditions. Using this synthetic dataset, and a popular dataset of real faces, we evaluate the accuracy of two popular neural-based recognition systems. We find that previously reported face recognition accuracies of more than 95% drop to as low as 65% in this more challenging forensic scenario.

Abstract:Highlights • The performance of identification algorithms is susceptible to many factors. • Head rotation beyond a 15-degree angle pose challenges to automated systems. • An upward tilt of 10° and higher leads to a notable degradation in performance. • Only a smiling face produced consistently positive log-likelihood ratios. • There is evidence of sex-related bias favoring males in image processing. In today's biometric and commercial settings, state-of-the-art image processing relies solely on artificial intelligence and machine learning which provides a high level of accuracy. However, these principles are deeply rooted in abstract, complex "black-box systems". When applied to forensic image identification, concerns about transparency and accountability emerge. This study explores the impact of two challenging factors in automated facial identification: facial expressions and head poses. The sample comprised 3D faces with nine prototype expressions, collected from 41 participants (13 males, 28 females) of European descent aged 19.96 to 50.89 years. Pre-processing involved converting 3D models to 2D color images (256 × 256 px). Probes included a set of 9 images per individual with head poses varying by 5° in both left-to-right (yaw) and up-and-down (pitch) directions for neutral expressions. A second set of 3,610 images per individual covered viewpoints in 5° increments from −45° to 45° for head movements and different facial expressions, forming the targets. Pair-wise comparisons using ArcFace, a state-of-the-art face identification algorithm yielded 54,615,690 dissimilarity scores. Results indicate that minor head deviations in probes have minimal impact. However, the performance diminished as targets deviated from the frontal position. Right-to-left movements were less influential than up and down, with downward pitch showing less impact than upward movements. The lowest accuracy was for upward pitch at 45°. Dissimilarity scores were consistently higher for males than for females across all studied factors. The performance particularly diverged in upward movements, starting at 15. Among tested facial expressions, happiness and contempt performed best, while disgust exhibited the lowest AUC values.

Abstract:Craniofacial reconstruction is applied to identify human remains in the absence of determination data (e.g., fingerprinting, dental records, radiological materials, or DNA), by predicting the likeness of the unidentified remains based on the internal relationship between the skull and face. Conventional 3D methods are usually based on statistical models with poor capacity, which limit the description of such complex relationship. Moreover, the required high-quality data are difficult to collect. In this study, we present a novel craniofacial reconstruction paradigm that synthesize craniofacial images from 2D computed tomography scan of skull data. The key idea is to recast craniofacial reconstruction as an image translation task, with the goal of generating corresponding craniofacial images from 2D skull images. To this end, we design an automatic skull-to-face transformation system based on deep generative adversarial nets. The system was trained on 4551 paired skull-face images obtained from 1780 CT head scans of the Han Chinese population. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only database of this magnitude in the literature. Finally, to accurately evaluate the performance of the model, a face recognition task employing five existing deep learning algorithms, —FaceNet, —SphereFace, —CosFace, —ArcFace, and —MagFace, was tested on 102 reconstruction cases in a face pool composed of 1744 CT-scan face images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used as an effective forensic tool.

Automated reconstruction: Predictive models based on facial morphology matrices

Abstract:Forensic Facial Approximation (FFA) has evolved, with techniques advancing to refine the intercorrelation between the soft-tissue facial profile and the underlying skull. FFA has become essential for identifying unknown persons in South Africa, where the high number of migrant and illegal labourers and many unidentified remains make the identification process challenging. However, existing FFA methods are based on American or European standards, rendering them inapplicable in a South African context. We addressed this issue by conducting a study to create prediction models based on the relationships between facial morphology and known factors, such as population affinity, sex, and age, in white South African and French samples. We retrospectively collected 184 adult cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans representing 76 white South Africans (29 males and 47 females) and 108 French nationals (54 males and 54 females) to develop predictive statistical models using a projection onto latent structures regression algorithm (PLSR). On training and untrained datasets, the accuracy of the estimated soft-tissue shape of the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth was measured using metric deviations. The predictive models were optimized by integrating additional variables such as sex and age. Based on trained data, the prediction errors for the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth ranged between 1.6 mm and 4.1 mm for white South Africans; for the French group, they ranged between 1.9 mm and 4.2 mm. Prediction errors on non-trained data ranged between 1.6 mm and 4.3 mm for white South Africans, whereas prediction errors ranging between 1.8 mm and 4.3 mm were observed for the French. Ultimately, our study provided promising predictive models. Although the statistical models can be improved, the inherent variability among individuals restricts the accuracy of FFA. The predictive validity of the models was improved by including sex and age variables and considering population affinity. By integrating these factors, more customized and accurate predictive models can be developed, ultimately strengthening the effectiveness of forensic analysis in the South African region.
An overview of the latest developments in facial imaging

Abstract:Facial imaging is a term used to describe methods that use facial images to assist or facilitate human identification. This pertains to two craniofacial identification procedures that use skulls and faces-facial approximation and photographic superimposition-as well as face-only methods for age progression/regression, the construction of facial graphics from eyewitness memory (including composites and artistic sketches), facial depiction, face mapping and newly emerging methods of molecular photofitting. Given the breadth of these facial imaging techniques, it is not surprising that a broad array of subject-matter experts participate in and/or contribute to the formulation and implementation of these methods (including forensic odontologists, forensic artists, police officers, electrical engineers, anatomists, geneticists, medical image specialists, psychologists, computer graphic programmers and software developers). As they are concerned with the physical characteristics of humans, each of these facial imaging areas also falls in the domain of physical anthropology, although not all of them have been traditionally regarded as such. This too offers useful opportunities to adapt established methods in one domain to others more traditionally held to be disciplines within physical anthropology (e.g. facial approximation, craniofacial superimposition and face photo-comparison). It is important to note that most facial imaging methods are not currently used for identification but serve to assist authorities in narrowing or directing investigations such that other, more potent, methods of identification can be used (e.g. DNA). Few, if any, facial imaging approaches can be considered honed end-stage scientific methods, with major opportunities for physical anthropologists to make meaningful contributions. Some facial imaging methods have considerably stronger scientific underpinnings than others (e.g. facial approximation versus face mapping), some currently lie entirely within the artistic sphere (facial depiction), and yet others are so aspirational that realistic capacity to obtain their aims has strongly been questioned despite highly advanced technical approaches (molecular photofitting). All this makes for a broad-ranging, dynamic and energetic field that is in a constant state of flux. This manuscript provides a theoretical snapshot of the purposes of these methods, the state of science as it pertains to them, and their latest research developments.

Abstract:Background In the era of increasing tools for automatic image analysis in dermatology, new machine learning models require high-quality image data sets. Facial image data are needed for developing models to evaluate attributes such as redness (acne and rosacea models), texture (wrinkles and aging models), pigmentation (melasma, seborrheic keratoses, aging, and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation), and skin lesions. Deidentifying facial images is critical for protecting patient anonymity. Traditionally, journals have required facial feature concealment typically covering the eyes, but these guidelines are largely insufficient to meet ethical and legal guidelines of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act for patient privacy. Currently, facial feature deidentification is a challenging task given lack of expert consensus and lack of testing infrastructure for adequate automatic and manual facial image detection. Objective This study aimed to review the current literature on automatic facial deidentification algorithms and to assess their utility in dermatology use cases, defined by preservation of skin attributes (redness, texture, pigmentation, and lesions) and data utility. Methods We conducted a systematic search using a combination of headings and keywords to encompass the concepts of facial deidentification and privacy preservation. The MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase (via Elsevier), and Web of Science (via Clarivate) databases were queried from inception to May 1, 2021. Studies with the incorrect design and outcomes were excluded during the screening and review process. Results A total of 18 studies, largely focusing on general adversarial network (GANs), were included in the final review reporting various methodologies of facial deidentification algorithms for still and video images. GAN-based studies were included owing to the algorithm’s capacity to generate high-quality, realistic images. Study methods were rated individually for their utility for use cases in dermatology, pertaining to skin color or pigmentation and texture preservation, data utility, and human detection, by 3 human reviewers. We found that most studies notable in the literature address facial feature and expression preservation while sacrificing skin color, texture, pigmentation, which are critical features in dermatology-related data utility. Conclusions Overall, facial deidentification algorithms have made notable advances such as disentanglement and face swapping techniques, while producing realistic faces for protecting privacy. However, they are sparse and currently not suitable for complete preservation of skin texture, color, and pigmentation quality in facial photographs. Using the current advances in artificial intelligence for facial deidentification summarized herein, a novel approach is needed to ensure greater patient anonymity, while increasing data access for automated image analysis in dermatology. Study methods were rated individually for their utility for use cases in dermatology, pertaining to skin color or pigmentation and texture preservation, data utility, and human detection, by 3 human reviewers. We found that most studies notable in the literature address facial feature and expression preservation while sacrificing skin color, texture, pigmentation, which are critical features in dermatology-related data utility. CONCLUSIONS Overall, facial deidentification algorithms have made notable advances such as disentanglement and face swapping techniques, while producing realistic faces for protecting privacy. However, they are sparse and currently not suitable for complete preservation of skin texture, color, and pigmentation quality in facial photographs. Using the current advances in artificial intelligence for facial deidentification summarized herein, a novel approach is needed to ensure greater patient anonymity, while increasing data access for automated image analysis in dermatology.
Virtual anthropology? Reliability of three-dimensional photogrammetry as a forensic anthropology measurement and documentation technique

Abstract:Osseous remains provide forensic anthropologists with morphological and osteometric information that can be used in building a biological profile. By conducting a visual and physical examination, an anthropologist can infer information such as the sex and age of the deceased. Traditionally, morphological and osteometric information is gathered by physically handling remains for analysis. With the advancement of digital technology, there has been a shift from direct to indirect methods of analysis by utilizing models generated from three-dimensional (3D) imaging, which includes computed tomography (CT) scanning and 3D photogrammetry. Although CT scanning is more common, photogrammetry has found application in a range of fields such as architecture, geography and road accident reconstruction. The application of modern-day photogrammetry for forensic anthropology purposes, however, has not been discussed extensively. The aim of this research was to validate the accuracy of 3D models generated by photogrammetry by comparing them to both 3D models generated by CT scanning and the actual physical models. In this study, six 3D models were created using photogrammetry (n = 3) and CT scanning (n = 3). The 3D models were generated from three different Bone Clone® human skulls. A mobile phone camera was used to capture images, which were then processed in Agisoft Metashape®. Intrarater, interrater, and intermethod reliability tests gave correlation coefficients of at least 0.9980, 0.9871, and 0.9862, respectively; rTEM results ranged from 0.250 to 6.55%; and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) yielded P values under 0.05 for all measurements except one. Statistical tests therefore showed photogrammetry to be a reliable and accurate alternative to more expensive CT scanning approaches.
Toward an Automatic System for Computer-Aided Assessment in Facial Palsy

Abstract:Importance: Machine learning (ML) approaches to facial landmark localization carry great clinical potential for quantitative assessment of facial function as they enable high-throughput automated quantification of relevant facial metrics from photographs. However, translation from research settings to clinical applications requires important improvements. Objective: To develop an ML algorithm for accurate facial landmarks localization in photographs of facial palsy patients, and use it as part of an automated computer-aided diagnosis system. Design, Setting, and Participants: Facial landmarks were manually localized in portrait photographs of eight expressions obtained from 200 facial palsy patients and 10 controls. A novel ML model for automated facial landmark localization was trained using this disease-specific database. Model output was compared to manual annotations and the output of a model trained using a larger database consisting only of healthy subjects. Model accuracy was evaluated by the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) between algorithms' prediction and manual annotations. Results: Publicly available algorithms provide poor results when applied to patients compared to healthy controls (NRMSE, 8.56 +/- 2.16 vs. 7.09 +/- 2.34, p << 0.01). We found significant improvement in facial landmark localization accuracy for the clinical population when using a model trained with a relatively small number patients' photographs (1440) compared to a model trained using several thousand more images of healthy faces (NRMSE, 6.03 +/- 2.43 vs. 8.56 +/- 2.16, p << 0.01). Conclusions: Retraining a landmark detection model with a small number of clinical images significantly improved landmark detection performance in frontal view photographs of the clinical population. These results represent the first steps towards an automatic system for computer-aided assessment in facial palsy.

Abstract:The proteome of RCC was analyzed by 2D PAGE to search for tumor‐associated proteins. Agmatinase, which hydrolyzes agmatine to putrescine and urea, was identified by mass spectrometry and database searches and shown to be downregulated in tumor cells. Additionally, RT‐PCR and Northern blot analyses demonstrated a clearly decreased amount of agmatinase mRNA in tumor cells. The differential expression of agmatinase mRNA was confirmed at the protein level. Western blot analysis showed almost no detectable agmatinase protein in tumor cells compared to corresponding normal renal tissue. Agmatinase mRNA is most abundant in human liver and kidney but expressed to a lesser extent in several other tissues, including skeletal muscle and small intestine. The human agmatinase gene encodes a 352‐residue protein with a putative mitochondrial targeting sequence at the N‐terminus. Using transfection and immunohistochemical studies, we show that agmatinase is localized in the mitochondria. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that agmatinase in the normal kidney is restricted to tubulus epithelial cells, while in tumors staining was low and heterogeneous. Thus, expression of human agmatinase is altered in RCC. We discuss the consequences of these findings in terms of polyamine, NO metabolism and macrophage function. © 2003 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Abstract:This research presents an improved real-time face recognition system at a low resolution of 15 pixels with pose and emotion and resolution variations. We have designed our datasets named LRD200 and LRD100, which have been used for training and classification. The face detection part uses the Viola-Jones algorithm, and the face recognition part receives the face image from the face detection part to process it using the Local Binary Pattern Histogram (LBPH) algorithm with preprocessing using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) and face alignment. The face database in this system can be updated via our custom-built standalone android app and automatic restarting of the training and recognition process with an updated database. Using our proposed algorithm, a real-time face recognition accuracy of 78.40% at 15 px and 98.05% at 45 px have been achieved using the LRD200 database containing 200 images per person. With 100 images per person in the database (LRD100) the achieved accuracies are 60.60% at 15 px and 95% at 45 px respectively. A facial deflection of about 30 degrees on either side from the front face showed an average face recognition precision of 72.25% - 81.85%. This face recognition system can be employed for law enforcement purposes, where the surveillance camera captures a low-resolution image because of the distance of a person from the camera. It can also be used as a surveillance system in airports, bus stations, etc., to reduce the risk of possible criminal threats.
