Abstract:Increasing evidence indicates that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with cognitive as well as mood disturbances. To evaluate cognitive function and white matter structure, resting-state brain function in first-episode, treatmentnaive patients with MDD. To explore brain structure and function mechanisms of cognitive impairment in MDD. 46 Han Chinese MDD patients aged 18–45 year and 46 controls were assessed by a series of validated test procedures.Then, 30 patients and 30 controls were obtained by MRI scan.White matter abnormalities evaluated using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were analyzed using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) and resting-state brain function was evaluated using regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis. Cognitive impairment in patients with MDD was demonstrated by reduced accuracy in the Wisconsin Card Sorting test (WSCT) and to a lesser extent the Continuous Performance test (CPT) and Trail Making tests (TMT). White matter abnormalities found in the left cerebellum, and resting-state abnormalities present in the left inferior parietal gyrus, left anterior cingulate nucleus and left hippocampal gyrus were associated with impaired performance in the WSCT and CPT tests. We also showed that poor WSCT performance was associated with increased interconnectivity between the left ventral anterior cingulate nucleus and the medial frontal lobe areas. The present study indicates cognitive disturbances in patients with MDD are associated with white matter and resting-state changes and altered interconnections in specific brain areas.
Long‐Term Treatment of Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia in Private Practice

Abstract:&NA; The author followed 67 patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) for a minimum of 5 years in a private practice setting. They were treated with a combination of pharmacotherapy (antidepressants or benzodiazepines) and cognitive‐behavioral psychotherapy. The author examines outcomes for three groups: A) 11 male patients, 10 of whom had comorbid conditions; B) 21 female patients with comorbid conditions; and C) 35 female patients without comorbid conditions. Symptom severity was assessed using the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS). Patients in all groups showed marked improvement in all the domains measured by the PDSS, with the greatest improvement in PDSS scores occurring during the first year in all three groups. Patients in groups A and B tended to plateau after 5 years of treatment and show no additional improvement thereafter, whereas patients in group C (women with “pure PDA”) continued to improve, although at a gradually slower rate. However, after an average of 11 years of treatment, the majority of patients remained symptomatic. The presence of comorbid alcohol abuse or depression was associated with poorer outcomes. The results in this effectiveness study are generally not as good as the outcomes of published PDA follow‐up efficacy studies, but appear to be superior to outcomes in cohorts of chronically anxious patients treated decades ago. Abstract:In recent years, major depressive disorder (MDD) has been demonstrated to be associated with abnormalities in neural networks, particularly the prefrontal-limbic network (PLN). However, there are few current studies that have examined information flow in the PLN. In this study, Granger causality analysis (GCA), based on signed regression coefficient, was used to explore changes in causal connectivity in resting-state PLNs of MDD patients. A total of 23 first-episode medication-naïve MDD patients and 20 normal control participants were subjected to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) scans. Increased causal effects of the right insular cortex, right putamen and right caudate on the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) and reduced causal effects of bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) on the rACC were found in MDD patients compared to normal controls. The extensive reduction in the causal effect of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) demonstrates impaired top–down cognitive control in MDD patients. Changes in the causal relationship between the right insula and rACC suggest problems in coordination of the default mode network by the right anterior insular cortex (rAI). These findings provide valuable insight into MDD-related neural network disorders reported in previous RS-fMRI studies and may potentially guide clinical treatment of MDD in the future.
Aberrant Interhemispheric Functional Connectivity in Major Depressive Disorder with and Without Anhedonia.

Abstract:Abstract Objective Anhedonia is a core feature of major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a subtype of depression, MDD with anhedonia may have exceptional neurobiological mechanisms. However, the neuropathology of anhedonia in MDD remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the brain functional differences between MDD with and without anhedonia. Methods A total of 62 individuals including 22 MDD patients with anhedonia, 20 MDD patients without anhedonia, and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for this study. All participants underwent 3.0-T functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. Voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) was employed to quantitatively describe bilateral functional connectivity. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed to obtain brain regions with significant differences among three groups and then post hoc tests were calculated for inter-group comparisons. Results The ANOVA revealed significant VMHC differences among three groups in the bilateral middle temporal gyrus (MTG), superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and inferior parietal lobule (IPL) (F = 10.47 ~ 15.09, p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected). Relative to HCs, MDD with anhedonia showed significantly decreased VMHC in the bilateral MTG (t = -5.368, p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected), as well as increased VMHC in the bilateral SFG (t = -4.696, p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected). Compared to MDD without anhedonia, MDD with anhedonia showed significantly decreased VMHC in the bilateral MTG and IPL (t = -5.629 ~ -4.330, p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected), while increased VMHC in the bilateral SFG (t = 3.926, p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected). However, no significant difference was found between MDD without anhedonia and HCs. Conclusion The present findings suggest that MDD with and without anhedonia exhibit different patterns of interhemispheric connectivity. Anhedonia in MDD is related to aberrant interhemispheric connectivity within brain regions involved in the frontal–temporal-parietal circuit.

Abstract:Many studies have indicated that depression is associated with impairment of the topological organization of the brain functional network, which may lead to disruption of mood and cognition in depressive patients. The abnormality of homotopic connectivity provides a basis for the clinical manifestations of depression, such as emotional and cognitive disorders. Several studies have investigated the abnormal imbalance of homotopic regions between the hemispheres in depressive patients. However, the reported findings are inconsistent. Additionally, the published studies have focused on only the grey matter when investigating functional connectivity abnormalities of the bilateral cerebral hemispheres in major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of this study is to investigate functional connectivity abnormalities of the bilateral cerebral hemispheres in patients with first-episode, drug-naïve MDD using a voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method. Based on DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, 23 first-episode, drug-naïve MDD patients were recruited, together with 20 gender- and age-matched healthy normal controls. A Philips Achieva 3.0 T MRI scanner was used to acquire brain functional images at resting state as well as high-resolution structural images. The functional images were preprocessed by using Data Processing Assistant for Resting-State Functional MR Imaging toolkit and SPM8.VMHC between the bilateral hemispheres was computed and compared between the MDD and control groups. The correlation between the VMHC values of the abnormal homotopy function areas and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) was evaluated in the MDD patients. Compared with the control group, the MDD patients showed significantly decreased VMHC values in the bilateral brain regions including the insular, putamen, and frontal white matter. The MDD patients did not exhibit increased VMHC values in any brain regions compared with the normal controls. In addition, a negative correlation was observed between the VMHC value in the frontal lobe white-matter and the HAMD in the MDD patients. Abnormalities in brain homotopic functional connectivity observed in this study may indicate abnormal neural circuits related to aberrant cognition and emotional processing in MDD. Although the physiological significance underlaying abnormal VMHC in white matter in the frontal lobe needs further research, our study new angle to investigate the role of white-matter abnormalities in MDD as well as other psychiatric disorders.

Connectome Analysis of Functional and Structural Hemispheric Brain Networks in Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract:Neuroimaging studies have shown topological disruptions of both functional and structural whole-brain networks in major depressive disorder (MDD). This study examined common and specific alterations between these two types of networks and whether the alterations were differentially involved in the two hemispheres. Multimodal MRI data were collected from 35 MDD patients and 35 healthy controls, whose functional and structural hemispheric networks were constructed, characterized, and compared. We found that functional brain networks were profoundly altered at multiple levels, while structural brain networks were largely intact in patients with MDD. Specifically, the functional alterations included decreases in intra-hemispheric (left and right) and inter-hemispheric (heterotopic) functional connectivity; decreases in local, global and normalized global efficiency for both hemispheric networks; increases in normalized local efficiency for the left hemispheric networks; and decreases in intra-hemispheric integration and inter-hemispheric communication in the dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus and hippocampus. Regarding hemispheric asymmetry, largely similar patterns were observed between the functional and structural networks: the right hemisphere was over-connected and more efficient than the left hemisphere globally; the occipital and partial regions exhibited leftward asymmetry, and the frontal and temporal sites showed rightward lateralization with regard to regional connectivity profiles locally. Finally, the functional–structural coupling of intra-hemispheric connections was significantly decreased and correlated with the disease severity in the patients. Overall, this study demonstrates modality- and hemisphere-dependent and invariant network alterations in MDD, which are helpful for understanding elaborate and characteristic patterns of integrative dysfunction in this disease.

Abstract:Cell-mediated immunity (e.g., allograft rejection) is found in all vertebrates, and these reactions are known to depend on thymus-derived cells in amphibian, avian, and mammalian species. The participation of peripheral T cell-like lymphocytes subpopulations to fish immunity is now well documented, but the developmental origin, migration, and peripheral tissue distribution of these cells remain practically unknown. This is mainly due to the difficulty of efficiently thymectomizing fish at an early stage of development and to the lack of Ab strictly specific for thymocytes and T cell surface Ag. One strategy for analyzing T cell biology in fish would be to characterize the genes encoding polypeptides homologous to the TCR molecules. This report describes cDNA clones from the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that have sequences very similar to amphibian, avian, and mammalian TCR beta-chains. Three complete trout V beta segments belonging to different families were analyzed; one of them had limited amino acid sequence similarity to the human V beta 20 family. The 10 trout beta-chain-joining segments all retain the invariant mammalian J beta residues, and comparison of 66 V beta-J beta junctions led to the identification of a D beta-like sequence (GGACAGGG) that is shorter than but very similar to the chicken D beta and mammalian D beta 1 sequences. There is considerable diversity at the V beta-D beta and D beta-J beta junctions, suggesting the presence of N-nucleotides. The trout C beta extracellular domain is shorter than mammalian C beta, and the hinge region has no cysteine residue. The transmembrane C beta domain contains a lysine residue that in mammals is thought to be involved in charged interactions with members of the CD3 complex.
Abnormal voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity in first-episode major depressive disorder using fMRI: a machine learning approach

Abstract:Objective: To explore the interhemispheric information synergy ability of the brain in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients by applying the voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method and further explore the potential clinical diagnostic value of VMHC metric by a machine learning approach. Methods: 52 healthy controls and 48 first-episode MDD patients were recruited in the study. We performed neuropsychological tests and resting-state fMRI scanning on all subjects. The VMHC values of the symmetrical interhemispheric voxels in the whole brain were calculated. The VMHC alterations were compared between two groups, and the relationship between VMHC values and clinical variables was analyzed. Then, abnormal brain regions were selected as features to conduct the classification model by using the support vector machine (SVM) approach. Results: Compared to the healthy controls, MDD patients exhibited decreased VMHC values in the bilateral middle frontal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, medial superior frontal gyrus and precentral gyrus. Furthermore, the VMHC value of the bilateral fusiform gyrus was positively correlated with the total Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Moreover, SVM analysis displayed that a combination of all clusters demonstrated the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.87 with accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values of 86.17%, 76.74%, and 94.12%, respectively. Conclusion: MDD patients had reduced functional connectivity in the bilateral middle frontal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, medial superior frontal gyrus and precentral gyrus, which may be related to depressive symptoms. The abnormality in these brain regions could represent potential imaging markers to distinguish MDD patients from healthy controls.

Abstract:Object:Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been demonstrated to be associated with abnormalities in neural networks. However, few studies examined information flow in the salience network (SN). This study examined abnormalities in the causal connectivity between the SN and whole brain in drug-naive first-episode patients with MDD in the resting state. Methods:Based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria, 23 drug-naive first-episode MDD patients and 20 matched healthy individuals were recruited and underwent a resting-state magnetic resonance scan. The acquired functional image data were preprocessed using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data analysis toolkit plus (RESTplus). Then, using the data processing & analysis for brain imaging (DPABI) software and a coefficient-based general component analysis method with the right anterior insula (rAI) as the region of interest (ROI), the causal connectivity of the SN with the whole brain and its correlation with cognitive and mental performance were examined in the resting state. Results:(1) The MDD group showed a significantly higher Hamilton Depression Rating Scale total score and significantly higher scores for anxiety, cognitive disturbance, and block factors compared with normal controls. (2) Compared with control: from whole brain to the rAI, the MDD group showed a lower causal connectivity in the left inferior frontal gyrus; from the rAI to the whole brain, the MDD group showed a lower causal connectivity in the right cingulate gyrus, the right precuneus, and extending to paracentral lobule but higher causal connectivity in the left inferior and middle frontal gyrus. (3) In the MDD group, from rAI to the whole brain, the causal connectivity values for the right cingulate gyrus/precuneus were negatively correlated with the score of Stroop Color-Word Test A, B, and C as well as interference times. Conclusion:Our results indicated disrupted causal connectivity among the default mode network (DMN), the central executive network (CEN), and SN in drug-naive first-episode MDD patients. Especially, our results suggest a unique role for rAI in the ordered or hierarchical information processing, presumed to include bottom-up and top-down reciprocal influences among the three networks in MDD.

Abstract:Background: Previous neuroimaging studies have showed that imbalanced functional integration of distributed large-scale brain networks is associated with pathophysiological characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the association between network integrative disturbances and clinical features and cognitive functions remains largely unclear in adolescent MDD. This study investigated the neural correlates of abnormal functional connectivity networks with clinical and cognitive characteristics in adolescent MDD. Methods: Twenty-eight first-episode, treatment-naive adolescents with MDD and 24 well-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a battery of cognitive tests. A seed-based functional connectivity (FC) approach was used to depict connectivity patterns of the cognitive control network (CCN), affective network (AN) and default mode network (DMN), whose between-group differences were correlated with clinical variables and cognitive functions in the patients. Results: Compared with the HCs, the MDD patients exhibited impaired executive functions. The FC analysis revealed lower CCN FC with the temporal, parietal and frontal regions and the limbic system, higher AN FC with the temporal and occipital regions and the cerebellum, and lower DMN FC with the cerebellum and insula. Interestingly, the decreased CCN FC was related to disease severity (with the inferior frontal gyrus) and executive dysfunctions (with the middle cingulate gyrus and supramarginal gyrus) in the patients. Limitations: The main limitations were the relatively small sample size and suboptimal imaging parameters. Conclusion: Functional alteration of CCN during the developmentally sensitive period may be important in the neurobiology of adolescent MDD.

Abstract:Objective: Prior researches have identified distinct differences in neuroimaging characteristics between healthy controls (HCs) and patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the correlations between homotopic connectivity and clinical characteristics in patients with MDD have yet to be fully understood. The present study aimed to investigate common and unique patterns of homotopic connectivity and their relationships with clinical characteristics in patients with MDD. Methods: We recruited 42 patients diagnosed with MDD and 42 HCs. We collected a range of clinical variables, as well as exploratory eye movement (EEM), event-related potentials (ERPs) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data. The data were analyzed using correlation analysis, support vector machine (SVM), and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). Results: Compared with HCs, patients with MDD showed decreased VMHC in the insula, and increased VMHC in the cerebellum 8/vermis 8/vermis 9 and superior/middle occipital gyrus. SVM analysis using VMHC values in the cerebellum 8/vermis 8/vermis 9 and insula, or VMHC values in the superior/middle occipital gyrus and insula as inputs can distinguish HCs and patients with MDD with high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that decreased VMHC in the insula and increased VMHC values in the sensory-motor networks may be a distinctive neurobiological feature for patients with MDD, which could potentially serve as imaging markers to discriminate HCs and patients with MDD.

Interhemispheric Functional Connectivity and Its Relationships with Clinical Characteristics in Major Depressive Disorder: A Resting State Fmri Study

Abstract:Background Abnormalities in large-scale, structural and functional brain connectivity have been increasingly reported in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, MDD-related alterations in functional interaction between the cerebral hemispheres are still not well understood. Resting state fMRI, which reveals spontaneous neural fluctuations in blood oxygen level dependent signals, provides a means to detect interhemispheric functional coherence. We examined the resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) between the two hemispheres and its relationships with clinical characteristics in MDD patients using a recently proposed measurement named "voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC)". Methodology/Principal Findings We compared the interhemispheric RSFC, computed using the VMHC approach, of seventeen first-episode drug-naive patients with MDD and seventeen healthy controls. Compared to the controls, MDD patients showed significant VMHC decreases in the medial orbitofrontal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, and occipital regions including the middle occipital gyrus and cuneus. In MDD patients, a negative correlation was found between VMHC of the fusiform gyrus and illness duration. Moreover, there were several regions whose VMHC showed significant negative correlations with the severity of cognitive disturbance, including the prefrontal regions, such as middle and inferior frontal gyri, and two regions in the cereballar crus. Conclusions/Significance These findings suggest that the functional coordination between homotopic brain regions is impaired in MDD patients, thereby providing new evidence supporting the interhemispheric connectivity deficits of MDD. The significant correlations between the VMHC and clinical characteristics in MDD patients suggest potential clinical implication of VMHC measures for MDD. Interhemispheric RSFC may serve as a useful screening method for evaluating MDD where neural connectivity is implicated in the pathophysiology.

Abstract:Abstract Previous studies have shown that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with disrupted topological organizations of large-scale brain networks. However, the disruptions and their clinical and cognitive relevance are not well established for morphological brain networks in adolescent MDD. In this study, twenty-five first-episode, treatment-naive adolescents with MDD and nineteen healthy controls underwent T1-weighted MRI and a battery of neuropsychological tests. Individual morphological brain networks were constructed separately based on 4 morphological features, whose topological organizations were quantified by graph-based approaches. Permutation testing and partial correlation were used to examine between-group differences and clinical and cognitive relevance of the differences, respectively. Finally, support vector machine was used to classify the patients from controls. Compared with the controls, the patients exhibited topological alterations mainly in cortical thickness-based networks characterized by higher nodal centralities in parietal (left PriMary Sensory Cortex) but lower centralities in temporal (left ParaBelt Complex, right Perirhinal Ectorhinal Cortex, right Area PHT and right Ventral Visual Complex) regions. Moreover, decreased nodal centralities of some temporal regions were correlated with cognitive dysfunction and course of illness of the patients. These results were largely reproducible for binary and weighted network analyses. Finally, topological properties of the cortical thickness-based networks were able to distinguish the patients from controls with 87.6% accuracy. In short, adolescent MDD is associated with abnormal local organizations of morphological brain networks, which provide potential biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring the disease.

Abstract:Background: Alterations in the default mode network (DMN) have been reported in major depressive disorder (MDD), well-replicated robust alterations of functional connectivity (FC) of DMN remain to be established. Investigating the functional connections of DMN at the overall and subsystem level in early MDD patients has the potential to advance our understanding of the physiopathology of this disorder. Methods: We recruited 115 first-episode drug-naïve patients with MDD and 137 demographic-matched healthy controls (HCs). We first compared FC within the DMN, within/between the DMN subsystems, and from DMN subsystems to the whole brain between groups. Subsequently, we explored correlations between clinical features and identified alterations in FC. Results: First-episode drug-naïve patients with MDD showed significantly increased FC within the DMN, dorsal DMN and medial DMN. Each subsystem showed a distinct FC pattern with other brain networks. Increased FC between the subsystems (core DMN, dorsal DMN) and other networks was associated with more severe depressive symptoms, while medial DMN-related connectivity correlated with memory performance. Limitations: The relatively large "pure" MDD sample could only be generalized to a limited population. And, atypical asymmetric FCs in the DMN related to MDD might be missed for only left-lateralized ROIs were used to avoid strong correlations between mirrored (right/left) seed regions. Conclusion: These findings suggest patients with early MDD showed distinct patterns of FC alterations throughout DMN and its subsystems, which were related to illness severity and illness-associated cognitive impairment, highlighting their clinical significance.

Abstract:Several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated abnormalities in static intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity among diverse brain regions in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the dynamic changes in intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity patterns in patients with MDD remain unclear. Fifty-eight first-episode, drug-naive patients with MDD and 48 age-, sex-, and education level-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state fMRI. Whole-brain functional connectivity, analyzed using the functional connectivity density (FCD) approach, was decomposed into ipsilateral and contralateral functional connectivity. We computed the intra- and interhemispheric dynamic FCD (dFCD) using a sliding window analysis to capture the dynamic patterns of functional connectivity. The temporal variability in functional connectivity was quantified as the variance of the dFCD over time. In addition, intra- and interhemispheric static FCD (sFCD) patterns were calculated. Associations between the dFCD variance and sFCD in abnormal brain regions and the severity of depressive symptoms were analyzed. Compared to HCs, patients with MDD showed lower interhemispheric dFCD variability in the inferior/middle frontal gyrus and decreased sFCD in the medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex and posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus in both intra- and interhemispheric comparisons. No significant correlations were found between any abnormal dFCD variance or sFCD at the intra- and interhemispheric levels and the severity of depressive symptoms. Our results suggest intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity alterations in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and default mode network regions involved in cognition, execution and emotion. Furthermore, our study emphasizes the essential role of altered interhemispheric communication dynamics in the DLPFC in patients with MDD. These findings contribute to our understanding of the pathophysiology of MDD.

Abstract:Background: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is common and disabling, but its neural pathophysiology remains unclear. Functional brain network studies in MDD have largely had limited statistical power and data analysis approaches have varied widely. The REST-meta-MDD Project of resting-state fMRI (R-fMRI) addresses these issues. Methods: The 25 research groups in China composing the REST-meta-MDD Project contributed R-fMRI data of 1,300 patients with MDD and 1,128 normal controls (NCs). The data were preprocessed locally with a standardized protocol prior to aggregated group analyses. We focused on functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode network (DMN), frequently reported to show increased FC in MDD. Outcomes: We found decreased instead of increased DMN FC in MDD compared to NCs. We found FC reduction only in recurrent MDD, not in first-episode drug-naive MDD. Decreased DMN FC was associated with medication usage but not with MDD duration or severity. Exploratory analyses also revealed alterations of local intrinsic activity in MDD. Interpretation: We confirmed the key role of DMN in MDD but found reduced rather than increased FC within the DMN. Future studies should test whether decreased DMN FC mediates treatment response. All the R-fMRI indices have been made publicly available via the R-fMRI Maps Project. The REST-meta-MDD model can be generalized to longitudinal MDD studies and to other psychiatric disorders. Abstract:The 50 S ribosome of Escherichia coli is partially degraded by RNase I in presence of a high concentration of Mg2+ (10 to 20 mM); the partially degraded subunit becomes resistant to the further action of RNase I. The latter remains latent in association with the subparticle as in case of 30 S ribosome (Neu, H.C., and Heppel, L.A. (1954) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 51, 1267-1274). As a result of nucleolytic action, 23 S RNA is degraded to a smaller size and four proteins (L4, L10, L7/L12) are released from the subunit. From the location of these proteins, it appears that the primary site of action of RNase I is the central protuberance of the armchair model proposed for the subunit (Stoffler, G., and Whitman, H.G. (1977) in Molecular Mechanisms of Protein Biosynthesis (Weissbach, H., and Pestka, S., eds) pp. 117-144, Academic Press, New York).

Abstract:BackgroundResting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging has been widely used for the assessment of brain functional network, yet with inconsistent results. The present study aimed to investigate intranetwork and internetwork connectivity differences between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls at the integrity, network and edge levels of 8 well-defined resting state networks.MethodsThirty patients with MDD and sixty-three healthy control subjects were recruited in this study.ResultsCompared with healthy controls, patients with MDD showed increased node degree in the right amygdala and putamen, increased connectivity strength in the deep gray matter network (DGN) and increased functional connectivity in intranetwork and internetwork. Meanwhile, MDD showed decreased connectivity strength in visual network-DGN pair.LimitationsThe sample size was small, and all patients in this study were of Asian ethnicity, especially Han individuals.ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate that MDD cases and healthy controls may have divergent intranetwork and internetwork connectivity at an early stage without confounding influence of medication. These differences may underlie cognitive and behavioral alterations in patients with MDD. And these differences may help with the discrimination of patients and healthy people at an early stage of MDD. More studies in the future are warranted to assist in the diagnosis of this burdensome disease.

Abstract:Background and Objective: The ventral attentional network (VAN) can provide quantitative information on cognitive problems in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Nevertheless, little is known about network homogeneity (NH) changes in the VAN of these patients. The aim of this study was to examine the NH values in the VAN by independent component analysis (ICA) and compare the NH values between MDD patients and the normal controls (NCs). Methods: Attentional network test and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were collected from 73 patients, and 70 NCs matched by gender, age, and education years. ICA and NH were employed to evaluate the data. Moreover, the NH values were compared, and Spearman's rank correlation analysis was used to assess the correlations with the executive control reaction time (ECRT). Results: Our results showed that the first-episode, treatment-naive MDD patients had decreased NH in the right precuneus (PCu) and abnormal ECRT compared with NCs. However, no significant correlation was found between the NH values and measured clinical variables. Conclusion: Our results highlight the potential importance of VAN in the pathophysiology of cognitive problems in MDD, thus offering new directions for future research on MDD.
