Abstract:Abstract BackgroundHealth literacy is recognized as a social determinant of health based on its impact on health outcomes. Nurses play a vital role in the promotion of health literacy, health literacy practices enable nurses to offer understandable health information to all people and contribute to health equity. The aims of this study were to investigate health literacy knowledge level and associated practices among Chinese registered nurses and identify related factors.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was used. The Chinese version of the Health Literacy Knowledge and Experience Survey was adapted among registered nurses (N=768) from six hospitals in Zhejiang Province of China. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data of demographic characteristics, knowledge and associated practices.ResultsThe health literacy knowledge level of 768 nurses was 12.78±3.54, of the five content areas, basic facts about health literacy had the lowest correct answer rate 43.2%. Educational background (P=0.000), position (P=0.010), professional title (P=0.030), department (P=0.009), and whether they had heard about health literacy (P=0.022) were significantly correlated with health literacy knowledge level. The multiple linear regression analysis found that educational background and whether they had heard about health literacy were positively associated with health literacy knowledge level. In the aspect of health literacy education practice, using written materials to provide healthcare information (P=0.000), using computer software to provide healthcare information (P=0.003) and using teach-back to examine the effect of health education (P=0.000) were positively correlated with health literacy knowledge level.ConclusionThis study indicated that registered nurses in Zhejiang Province of China had low health literacy knowledge level and applied health literacy-associated practices inadequately. It is urgent to improve the knowledge level of nurses' health literacy. Educational background, position, professional title, department, and whether they had heard about health literacy were significantly correlated with health literacy knowledge level. In the continuous training, it is very important to design corresponding health literacy courses according to different departments and different levels of nurses.
Levels of Common Knowledge on Common Psychiatric Disorders and Therapeutic Means Taken in General Population: Effects of Education Level and Living Area

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the differences in level of common knowledge toward common psychiatric disorders and means of therapy in general population, resulting from different education levels and living areas.METHODS:All 4,614 persons over 15 years of age recruited from general population in Zhejiang Province via stratified randomly sampling, were classified by education levels as illiteracy, primary school level, high school level, and college level. Each group was thus divided into two categories according to the person's living areas, ie urban and rural area. The level of common knowledge about psychosis and means of therapy were measured by a questionnaire administered to all subjects.RESULTS:The rate of knowledge of neurasthenic was the highest, reaching to 71.1%, then of knowledge of schizophrenia and depression, was 47.9% and 39.3% respectively, and the rate of knowledge of alcohol dependence, mania and obsessive-compulsive disorder was lower than 20%. The rate of knowledge of the 6 common psychiatric disorders was higher in people from urban area, than from rural areas. The rate of knowledge of common psychiatric disorders was increased correspondingly to the increase of the education level among the people residing at the same living area. The main means of therapy the people selected was western medicine and psychology, reaching at 24.0% and 34.8% respectively. There were significant differences among the people with different education levels but from the same living areas, and the people with lower education levels were likely to choose the therapy of western medicine, on the other hand, the people with higher education levels were tending to choose the therapy of psychology.CONCLUSION:The popularization of the knowledge and the education about mental health should be reinforced, as to improving the knowledge about mental health, choosing a correct means of therapy to the common psychiatric disorders and promoting the mental health status of the population.
Mental health literacy of Chinese nurses from general and psychiatric hospital: a multi-centered survey

Abstract:Abstract This study investigated the level of mental health literacy (MHL) among Chinese nurses, identifying the influential factors and exploring the relationship between mental health literacy and mental health status. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was undertaken of 777 nurses in 13 general hospitals and 12 psychiatric hospitals using the Mental Health Literacy Scale-Chinese version, Patient Health Questionnaire-2, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2, and a demographic questionnaire, with stratified cluster sampling method employed. The total score on the Mental Health Literacy Scale-Chinese version among the nurses was 93.25 (SD = 10.52). Psychiatric nurses had higher levels of core MHL with more knowledge of mental disorders, higher ability to seek professional help, as well as recognize mental illness than nurses in general hospitals did, while they also had a lower level of acceptance of patients with mental illness. A multiple regression analysis revealed that nurses who have fewer depressive symptoms, being unmarried or divorced, with more education or higher professional titles had higher levels of core MHL, and that those nurses with longer work duration had lower acceptance of patients with mental illness. Therefore, the mental health literacy of Chinese nurses is moderate to low, and more mental health education programs or actions emphasizing knowledge, ability, recognition, and especially acceptance need to be implemented to improve the mental health literacy of nurses, with more focus on core MHL for general nurses and social acceptance for psychiatric nurses. Nurses with more depressive symptoms, less education, lower professional titles, longer work duration, and being married should be the given more attention in promotion programs.
Mental Health Literacy Survey of Non-Mental Health Professionals in Six General Hospitals in Hunan Province of China

Abstract:Background: The high numbers of patients with mental illness, especially those who are misdiagnosed or delayed in treatment in China, have imposed a huge burden on the country and the society. This study was designed to investigate the mental health literacy (MHL) of non-mental health nurses. Method: A cross-sectional survey was designed, and a convenient cluster sampling method was applied. We presented evidence on 601 nurses from the non-mental health department in four hospitals in Hengyang city, China. One-third of the vignettes were diagnosed with schizophrenia, depression, or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Result: The correct identification rates for schizophrenia, depression, and GAD vignettes reached 38.9, 56.2, and 17.5%, respectively. The majority of the participants deemed that the person in each vignette needed professional help, and most of them preferred professional medical help and lifestyle interventions. As for the likely outcome for the persons described in each vignette, more than half of the participants thought that with professional help, the patients would make a full recovery, but problems would probably recur. Conclusion: The MHL of non-mental health nurses is insufficient in China. This condition is particularly applicable in the case of GAD. Thus, the country must implement more mental health education programs to improve the MHL of non-mental health nurses.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The prevalence of mental health problems in medical students has continuously increased and is higher than the prevalence of mental health problems in students with other majors, which could lead to undesirable consequences for the students and their future patients. In China, the current states of medical education and healthcare workplaces differ in certain areas from those in Western or other Asian countries. However, the mental health status of Chinese medical students has not been systematically analyzed. Objectives: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to summarize the prevalence of mental health problems in Chinese medical students. Methods: All cross-sectional studies that investigated the prevalence of any mental health problem among Chinese medical students were retrieved from the following databases: EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO, OVID, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. We accepted each individual trial's inclusion and exclusion criteria for participants. The National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies was adopted to appraise the methodological quality of each study. RevMan (version 5.3) was used to analyze the data. Results: Ten cross-sectional studies involving a total of 30,817 Chinese medical students were included. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and eating disorders were 29%, 21%, 11%, and 2%, respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed no significant differences in the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation between genders and no significant difference in the prevalence of depression between individuals of different ages (20 years and older or younger than 20 years). Conclusions and implications of key findings: Chinese medical students have relatively high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation but a low prevalence of eating disorders. Mental health problems in Chinese medical students should be taken seriously, and timely screening of and proper intervention in these mental health problems are highly recommended.

Nurses' MHL is even more important because they are expected to deal with both the physical and psychological consequences of mental disorders. ObjectiveThis study investigated the level, discrepancy, and characteristics of MHL among Chinese nurses from both public general and psychiatric hospitals; identified influential factors; and explored the relationship between MHL and mental health status. MethodsUsing a stratified cluster sampling method to select participants, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to describe the MHL of 777 nurses from 13 general and 12 psychiatric hospitals using the Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-2, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2, and a demographic questionnaire. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing MHL among the nurses recruited. ResultsThe participants' total score on the Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale was 93.25 (SD = 10.52). Multiple regression analysis revealed that nurses who worked in psychiatric or higher-level hospitals, with higher professional titles or higher education had higher levels of overall MHL and core MHL, while those working in general hospitals, with shorter work duration, or who were unmarried had higher social acceptance of patients. Nurses' MHL was closely correlated with their mental health status. ConclusionThe overall and core MHL of Chinese nurses were at a moderate level, with social acceptance remaining at a relatively low level. There is an urgent need for MHL promotion programs to improve the MHL of clinical nurses. The focus must be given to overall MHL, especially core MHL, for non-psychiatric nurses to enhance their competence in mental health promotion and identification; more emphasis should be placed on the social acceptance of patients with mental illnesses for psychiatric nurses to improve their provision of professional services. Better MHL would be a formula for improving nurses' own mental health and their mental health service competence.
A novel bound form of plant invertase in rice suspension cells

Abstract:A novel alkaline bound invertase (ITab) was purified 116 fold from crude extract of rice suspension cells (Oryza sativa L. cv. Tainong 67). The enzyme can be released by treating the cell wall and membrane fragments with 1.0 M NaCl and purified to homogeneity through the steps of ammonium sulfate precipitation, Con A-Sepharose affinity (non-retained), Sepharose CL-6B, and DEAE-Sepharose chromatographies. The FPLC and SDS-PAGE analy- ses revealed ITab to have a native molecular mass of about 250 kDa, and it may therefore be homotetramer com- posed of subunit with a mass of 60 kDa. Isoelectric focusing analysis indicated that the pI value was 4.7. The optimum pH was 7.6 and the optimum temperature was 40-50°C. ITab can hydrolyze sucrose and raffinose, but not maltose. The enzyme did not have affinity toward Con A. So it is not a glycoprotein. The Km for sucrose was 15.28 mM. Fructose and glucose were inhibitors. The enzyme was activated by additional protein such as bovine serum albumin. Tris, metal ions, and thiol reagents inhibited the enzyme activity, but activity could be restored with DTT. It is suggested that sulfhydryl-group(s) exist either in the active site or nearly active site.

Abstract:A new off-line writer recognition method is proposed which uses a 2D membership function obtained by piling up characters as a dictionary. This is an extension of our previous work that also used the 2D membership function with /spl alpha/-cut. This time the principal component analysis was used to characterize one's handwriting features, and the dictionary was constructed of characters not far from the mean character. This method was applied to writer recognition of 21 students who wrote 8 types of "hiragana" characters and an 86.5% recognition rate was obtained.
Factors associated with nursing students' mental health-related stigma: A multisite cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Mental health-related stigma remains a complex and pervasive issue globally. It not only inhibits individuals from seeking help but also influences the quality of healthcare they receive. Despite extensive research on mental health-related stigma, there is still limited understanding of factors influencing mental health-related stigma among nursing students. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of mental health-related stigma among Chinese nursing students and investigate possible associated factors. Methods: Data were collected from the 2023 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) survey. A total of 967 nursing students were included in the study. Multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the influencing factors of mental health stigma. Results: The mean mental health-related stigma score among nursing students was 15.31 ± 5.23 (range = 0-27). Perceived stress (β = 0.14, P = 0.001), self-efficacy (β = 0.22, P < 0.001), academic stage (β = 0.17, P < 0.001), depression (β = 0.15, P < 0.001), and adverse life events (β = 0.06, P = 0.044) were significantly associated with mental health-related stigma among nursing students (R2 = 0.147, adjusted R2 = 0.143, F = 33.214, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Nursing students in China exhibit a moderate level of mental health-related stigma, suggesting room for improvement. Perceived stress, self-efficacy, academic stage, depression, and adverse life events emerged as significant influencing factors for mental health-related stigma. These findings provide valuable insights for developing interventions to reduce mental health-related stigma among nursing students, ultimately enhancing their well-being and preparing them for becoming competent healthcare professionals in the future.

Abstract:Accessible Summary What is known on the subject Health professionals, including nurses, are shown to have stigmatizing attitudes towards mental illness. For nursing students who are in their formative years of professional development, mental illness stigma can severely impact the care they provide. Little research has investigated multi‐national comparisons of nursing students' attitudes towards mental illness. What this paper adds to existing knowledge This study shows that between countries, there were substantial differences amongst nursing students in stigmatizing attitudes towards mental illness. Cultural perspectives may explain some of these differences. What are the implications for practice Regardless of location, stigmatizing attitudes are present at varying levels. Each nation can take steps to reduce these by acknowledging the presence of stigmatizing attitudes amongst nurses, educating nurses regarding the negative impacts of stigma on patient outcomes, and decrease stigmatizing attitudes by facilitating opportunities for nurses (particularly student nurses) to have direct contact with people with lived experiences of mental illness. Introduction Stigmatizing attitudes perpetuated by nursing professionals are a pervasive problem for people experiencing mental health issues. This global issue has detrimental consequences; inhibiting one's life chances and help‐seeking behaviours. To date, few studies have compared nursing students' attitudes towards mental illness from a multi‐national perspective. Aim To compare undergraduate nursing students' attitudes towards mental illness across six countries: Australia, India, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and USA. Method In a cross‐sectional design, data were collected from undergraduate nursing students (N = 426) using the Social Distance Scale. A one‐way analysis of variance was used to compare differences between countries. Results Nursing students' attitudes to mental illness differed between countries. Social Distance Scores were highest amongst nursing students from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Students from Taiwan and India possessed moderate stigma scores. Social Distance Scores from the USA and Australia were lowest. Discussion Clear differences in stigmatizing attitudes emerged between countries; these are discussed in relation to possible cultural influences. Implications for Practice It is suggested that educating nurses, combined with direct contact with people with lived experiences of mental illness, can reduce stigmatizing attitudes regardless of country, location or educational institution.

Abstract:Background Depression is a major public health problem in both China and Australia. To improve services, we need to ensure health professionals have an appropriate understanding of depression and its treatments. This study compares the level of awareness of depression between Chinese and Australian medical students. Methods The International Depression Literacy Survey assessing the public health impact, recognition and treatment of depression was completed by pre-psychiatric training medical students in China ( n = 220) and Australia ( n = 177). Results Chinese students were far less likely to consider mental health conditions and depression as major public health problems ( P < 0.001). Depression symptom recognition was similar with four of the top five symptoms of depression the same in both groups of students. Chinese students were more likely to consider some psychological symptoms such as “ thinking life is not worth living ”, but less likely to consider somatic features such as “ sleep disturbance ” as typical for people with depression. Chinese students were more likely to claim that they would seek help from mental health professionals if experiencing depression whilst Australian students were more likely to seek help from a general or family doctor. Conclusions Chinese medical students recognise depression similarly to Australian students but do not consider it a major public health problem. These results challenge the stereotype that depression is characterised by somatic symptoms in China. Increasing awareness of the public health impact of depression should be incorporated into the medical curriculum in China.
Knowledge, attitudes, and practices among medical students toward depression management: a cross-sectional study in China

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of depression among university and college students in China is nearly one-quarter. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among medical students toward depression management. Depression, a significant public health issue, has a substantial impact on students, with a reported prevalence of 23.8% among university and college students in China. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2023 and October 2023 at three medical universities in China. A self-administered questionnaire collected demographic information and assessed medical students' KAP on depression management. Results: A total of 632 participants were enrolled in this study from three medical universities. Among them, 383 (60.60%) were female, and the participants were aged 20.17 years on average (SD ± 1.80). Most of their family members (521, 82.44%) were not in the medical profession. Using a validated 15-point knowledge scale, a 50-point attitude scale, and a 30-point practice scale, which covered areas such as symptom recognition, treatment approaches, and stigma related to depression, the mean knowledge, attitudes and practices scores were 10.55 ± 3.36 (possible range: 0–15), 41.72 ± 4.45 (possible range: 10–50) and 19.79 ± 5.44 (possible range: 6–30), respectively. Males had lower knowledge ( p = 0.003). Only children had higher practice ( p = 0.034). Urban residents had higher attitudes ( p = 0.046). Higher income linked to better practice ( p = 0.047). Freshmen scored higher across all KAP ( p < 0.05). Medical family background linked to better knowledge ( p = 0.005). The attitude scores were correlated with the practice scores ( r = 0.403, p = 0.004). The structural equation model demonstrated that knowledge had direct effects on attitude and practice, as indicated by a path coefficient of 0.725 ( p < 0.001) and 0.370 ( p = 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, attitude had direct effects on practices, with a path coefficient of 0.509 ( p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study revealed that medical students possessed sufficient knowledge and demonstrated active attitudes but exhibited limited practical skills in managing depression. In investigating the KAP of medical students, it is essential to integrate specific practical applications, such as role-playing scenarios and case studies, into the curriculum. These methods will emphasize the importance of knowledge, foster positive attitudes, and promote peer collaboration to enhance practical skills in depression management.

Abstract:Background: Few studies have explored the associated factors of attitudes of nonpsychiatric nurses towards mental disorders. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the attitudes of nonpsychiatric nurses towards mental disorders and especially explore the association between psychiatric clinical practice and these attitudes. Methods: A total of 1324 nonpsychiatric nurses and students majoring in nursing were recruited through an online questionnaire from December 2021 to March 2022 in Sichuan Province, China. Demographic information, personal care experience, psychiatric nursing education and the Community Attitudes towards the Mentally Ill (CAMI) were collected. A higher score indicates a stigmatizing attitude in the authoritarianism and social restrictiveness (SR) subscales and a positive attitude in the benevolence and community mental health ideology (CMHI) subscales. Multivariate linear regression was employed to analyze associated factors of attitudes towards mental disorders, and hierarchical linear regression was used to analyze the association between psychiatric clinical practice and the attitudes towards mental disorders. Results: Under the control of confounders, high education level, long residence in urban and personal care experience were positively correlated with score of authoritarianism and SR ( p < 0.05), and negatively correlated with score of benevolence ( p < 0.05). Long residence in urban and personal care experience were negatively correlated with score of CMHI ( p < 0.05). Hierarchical linear regression analysis showed that after adjusting for demographic information, psychiatric clinical practice was associated with lower score of benevolence (B = -0.09, 95%CI = -0.17 ~ -0.003, p = 0.043) and CMHI (B = -0.09, 95%CI = -0.17 ~ -0.01, p = 0.027), but the initial associations between psychiatric clinical practice and authoritarianism, SR disappeared. Conclusions: High education level, long residence in urban, personal care experience and the psychiatric clinical practice were associated with the discrimination of nonpsychiatric nurses towards mental disorders. Further exploring practical strategies to optimize the psychiatric clinical practice experience of nonpsychiatric nurses could help improve their attitudes towards mental disorders.

Abstract:The study aimed to explore the opinions of multi-field Chinese experts on mental health literacy and further build a comprehensive picture of mental health literacy based on these opinions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Chinese experts from the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, mental health education, and social work. A mixed deductive-inductive thematic analysis was used in the analysis of the qualitative data. The experts noted that mental health literacy applies both to persons with mental illness and the people who help them. The comprehensive view of mental health literacy that emerged from the interviews included knowledge about mental illness, an attitude of acceptance, respectful behavior, and recognition of the importance of getting help. Characteristically, Chinese components of mental health literacy included living in harmony with others and achieving balance in all aspects of life. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first qualitative study of experts’ views of the concept of mental health literacy in the context of Chinese culture. The experts’ responses to the interviews generated a comprehensive view of mental health literacy, including several elements that may be especially salient in Chinese culture. The results have implications for researchers and clinicians.

Validation and Psychometric Testing of the Chinese Version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale Among Nurses

Abstract:The Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) is the most widely used and strong theory-based measurement tool to gain an understanding of mental health knowledge and ability. This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS-C) and to document the norm and its influential factors of mental health literacy among nurses. The MHLS was translated following Brislin’s translation model and tested with a sample of 872 clinical registered nurses. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals (JSE-HP), Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2) were administered to assess convergent validity. The minimum average partial test, parallel analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported 4 first-order 2 second-order structure. The 4 factors were named “knowledge of mental disorder,” “ability to seek information and help,” “recognition of mental disorder,” and “acceptance of patients with mental illness,” with factor 1-3 were summarized into MHLS-Core (Core literacy subscale) and factor 4 as MHLS-SA (Social acceptance subscale). The MHLS-C was moderately negatively correlated with the PHQ-2 and GAD-2 (-0.111, -0.081) and highly positively correlated with JSE-HP (0.492). The Cronbach’s α was 0.85 for the overall scale and 0.89 and 0.93 for two subscales. The test-retest reliability was good, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) of 0.80 for the whole scale, and 0.79 and 0.94 for two subscales. As an approximately normal distribution, the 50 th percentile for the MHLS-C was 99, with 50 th percentiles of 74 and 20 for MHLS-Core and MHLS-SA. Higher position, higher professional credentials, higher hospital hierarchy, other specialist hospital, psychiatric hospital and unmarried status were positive predictors. The 29-item MHLS-C, with two subscales of MHLS-Core and MHLE-SA, is a stable and validated tool to measure mental health literacy. MHLS-Core could be used independently to measure the core content of mental health literacy. It may be applicable for Chinese health professionals, but need further validation among the general public. MHL curriculum and a targeted culturally appropriate program for acceptance for health professionals, especially for those in general hospitals and with less working tenure, may be recommended.

Abstract:AIM: The aim of this study was to survey the ability of nursing students to obtain, appraise and understand health information and its influencing factors among undergraduate nursing students in a medical university in Chongqing, China.DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey.METHOD: The sample was obtained using stratified sampling methods. We used the internationally validated Health Literacy Questionnaire. Six hundred and fifteen (76.88%) of 800 nursing students completed participated anonymous questionnaires that measured their ability to obtain, appraise and understand health information.RESULTS: Mean scores of nursing students to obtain, appraise and understand health information were 17.13, 13.07 and 17.78 respectively. Academic level, parental educational level and socioeconomic status were significantly associated with scores in obtaining, appraising and understanding health information.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the association between mental health knowledge level and the prevalence of depressive symptoms among Chinese college students. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six universities in Jinan, Shandong Province, China, and a total of 600 college students were recruited to self-complete a series of questionnaires. The Mental Health Knowledge Questionnaire (MHKQ) was used to investigate the level of mental health knowledge. Depressive symptoms were investigated with the depression subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). The prevalence rate of depressive symptoms among college students was 31.2%. Compared with MHKQ scoring in the 1st quartile, college students with MHKQ scoring in the 3rd quartile and in the 4th quartile reported lower levels of depressive symptoms after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Since mental health knowledge level was related to depressive symptoms among college students, increased efforts to promote the level of mental health knowledge in Chinese college students are critical.

Abstract:Background: High levels of mental health literacy (MHL) have been linked to the ability to correctly recognize certain problems as mental health issues, which then may lead to effective help-seeking behaviors. Most research on MHL has focused on a limited number of psychiatric diagnoses, using Australian samples. Objective: This study aimed to investigate various components of MHL in a large sample of undergraduate students in the United States. Methods: We conducted a vignette-based study with 843 undergraduate students. Six psychiatric diagnoses (and two “non-disordered” scenarios) were represented in distinct vignettes. Participants rated the severity of each vignette character's problem, the helpfulness of numerous treatment options, and the likelihood that different etiological factors contributed to the character's problem. Key Results: Across all clinical vignettes, therapy/counseling was perceived to be the most helpful treatment. Participants rated “personal weakness/lack of willpower” as contributing the most to the alcohol use disorder (AUD) character's problems. Our hypothesis related to how perceptions of etiology may impact participants' perceptions of different types of treatment was partially supported for the depression character. When participants described the depression character as having a “psychological/mental health problem,” they were more likely to perceive therapy/counseling as being helpful compared to medication. Conclusions: Participants recognized most of the psychiatric diagnoses as a mental health problem, acknowledged the seriousness of the presenting problems, and recommended effective help-seeking behavior. Abstract:Sage Open, Volume 14, Issue 2, April-June 2024. Learning how to effectively respond to ethical dilemma can affect nurses' physical and mental health, which is not conducive to developing a nursing career. Nursing students' ethical behavior warrants attention as professionals about to begin clinical work. We aim to understand the current situation and influencing factors of Chinese nursing students' ethical behavior. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Full-time nursing students were recruited from an undergraduate medical university in Jinan through convenient sampling from November to December 2021. Research ethics approval (No. 2022-0018) was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Informed consent was also received from participants. The EBT scores of the nursing students were 95.14 ± 11.37, which was not high compared with the total score. Gender, year level, and professional values had a significant impact on participants' ethical behavior. A positive correlation was found between nursing professional values and ethical behavior. A gap still exists between the moral development and maturity of undergraduate nursing students. To further cultivate their ethical behavior and improve their confidence and ability to respond to ethical dilemmas, more innovative methods must be employed in teaching ethics courses, and continuity in the ethics education system must be maintained. For male and third- and fourth-year nursing students who showed lower ethical behavior scores, nursing educators can develop their ethical behaviors by helping them establish positive professional values.Plain Language SummaryEthical behavior refers to the actions taken by individuals when they encounter ethical dilemmas, which can either benefit or harm others and society. The occurrence of clinical ethical dilemmas is unavoidable, which often causes pressure to nurses and threatens the physical and mental health of nurses. Nursing students are valuable assets to the nursing profession, and their demonstration of positive ethical behavior can significantly boost their confidence and competence in resolving ethical dilemmas, which is conducive to the development of nursing work and career. This study aimed to investigate the current situation and influencing factors of nursing students' ethical behavior in China. A total of 921 nursing students from a medical college in Shandong Province were surveyed using the Chinese version of the Ethical Behavior Test (EBT) and Revised Nursing Professional Values Scale (NPVS-R). The results of this study showed that ethical behavior of Chinese nursing students was relatively immature. Female nursing students, first- and second-year nursing students and nursing students who agree with the nursing professional view have more mature ethical behavior and they can deal with ethical dilemmas more effectively. We should focus on those students who have difficulties in adopting positive ethical behavior to solve ethical dilemmas and find powerful measures to improve the current situation of ethical behavior. This study is limited by a single sample source and limited exploration variables. Future research should expand the sample sources at more universities, explore other influencing factors, and take intervention measures to improve the moral behavior of nursing students.

Mental health literacy and suicidal ideation among Chinese college students: The mediating role of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms

Abstract:Background Mental health literacy (MHL) is essential to mental health. Symptoms of depression and anxiety are significant antecedents and closely related to suicide among college students. Few studies have explored the mediating role of depressive and anxiety symptoms between MHL and suicidal ideation. Methods 5578 college students were included in the analysis. The online Wenjuanxing platform was used to collect data from November 2020 to March 2021. The bootstrapping method was used to test the mediating role of depressive and anxiety symptoms in the links between MHL and suicidal ideation. Results Approximately 18.8 % of Chinese college students in our study reported having suicidal ideation. MHL exhibited a significant and negative correlation with depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and suicidal ideation, whereas depressive and anxiety symptoms correlated significantly and positively with suicidal ideation. Compared with the lowest MHL quartile, the 3rd and 4th quartiles of MHL were associated with a significantly lower risk of suicidal ideation after adjusting for various confounding factors. Depressive and anxiety symptoms partially mediated the relationship between MHL and suicidal ideation, and the mediating effect of depressive symptoms was significantly greater than that of anxiety symptoms. Limitations This study was a cross-sectional survey. Future longitudinal studies on this relation are needed. Conclusions Depressive and anxiety symptoms mediate the relationship between MHL and suicidal ideation. Comprehensive school-based specific psychological education programs are needed to improve college students' MHL and change their attitudes toward mental health services.
