Abstract:Surface urban heat island (SUHI) is a major anthropogenic alteration of Earth's surface and can influence the local thermal environment by altering the surface energy flux balances. Researchers have paid much attention to SUHI studies in the last decades; still, its geospatial variability over a larger area is poorly understood. Detailed research is required to understand the mechanism and dynamics of SUHI along with its different driving variables. Hence in this study, we quantified the diurnal, seasonal, and interannual variation of SUHI intensity (SUHII) over 150 major Indian cities situated over different climatic zones using MODIS data from 2003 to 2018. The results reveal urban cool islands occurrence over the hot desert, hot steppe, and tropical monsoon climatic zone during daytime in both summer (−0.25 to −0.17°C) and winter (−0.33 to 0.17°C) season. In contrast, nighttime SUHII shows clear evidence of positive urban heat island irrespective of climatic region and seasonal variation of 0.48–1°C in summer and 0.46–1.32°C in winter is seen. The Mann–Kendall and Sen's slope estimator tests are used to detect the trend of the SUHII during the study period, which suggests a higher percentage of cities showing an increasing trend of SUHII for urban heat islands than the cities of the urban cool island. Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression model determine the possible SUHII controlling variable over different climatic zones. During the daytime, the SUHII's distribution is controlled by vegetation, evapotranspiration, and thermal inertia in the summer/winter season. Whereas, it is linked tightly to built-up intensity, white sky albedo, and thermal inertia in both seasons during nighttime. Overall, we found that the stepwise multiple linear regression model can explain the SUHII variance more in the daytime (>0.8) than in nighttime (>0.7, except for tropical cities) and more in understanding the SUHII behaviors for cool cities as compared to hot cities. Moreover, this study also quantifies the significant control of thermal inertia and soil moisture in understating urban heat and cool island behavior over different climatic zones.

Abstract:The unique geographical diversity and rapid urbanization across the Indian subcontinent give rise to large-scale spatiotemporal variations in urban heating and air emissions. The complex relationship between geophysical parameters and anthropogenic activity is vital in understanding the urban environment. This study analyses the characteristics of heating events using aerosol optical depth (AOD) level variability, across 43 urban agglomerations (UAs) with populations of a million or more, along with 13 industrial districts (IDs), and 14 biosphere reserves (BRs) in the Indian sub-continent. Pre-monsoon average surface heating was highest in the urban areas of the western (42 °C), central (41.9 °C), and southern parts (40 °C) of the Indian subcontinent. High concentration of AOD in the eastern part of the Indo-Gangetic Plain including the megacity: Kolkata (decadal average 0.708) was noted relative to other UAs over time. The statistically significant negative correlation (−0.51) between land surface temperature (LST) and AOD in urban areas during pre-monsoon time illustrates how aerosol loading impacts the surface radiation and has a net effect of reducing surface temperatures. Notable interannual variability was noted with, the pre-monsoon LST dropping in 2020 across most of the selected urban regions (approx. 89% urban clusters) while it was high in 2019 (for approx. 92% urban clusters) in the pre-monsoon season. The results indicate complex variability and correlations between LST and urban aerosol at large scales across the Indian subcontinent. These large-scale observations suggest a need for more in-depth analysis at city scales to understand the interplay and combined variability between physical and anthropogenic atmospheric parameters in mesoscale and microscale climates.

Abstract:Increasing temperatures in urban areas cause an increase in air conditioning demands, elevated pollution levels, and may modify precipitation patterns. Therefore, many environmental, economic, and social considerations are associated with the urban heat island (UHI) effect, directly affecting the residents of a city's comfort and health. A detailed analysis regarding the formation of UHIs with the help of land surface temperature (LST) image mapping was carried out in the present study. The results show the presence of nocturnal UHI formation over the Delhi city during the entire study period with an average surface UHI intensity (SUHII) of 9.5 K, whereas an inverse surface UHI (SUHI) effect was observed during the day period. Also, a detailed analysis regarding the formation of urban pollution island (UPI) with the help of aerosol optical depth (AOD) image mapping was done in the present study. By comparing SUHII and urban pollution island intensity (UPII) over the study area, it has been noticed that there is no significant correlation between SUHII and UPII. During summer day and nighttime and winter day and nighttime, there were significantly lower values of R 2 recorded in a range between 0.002 and 0.48. Rising temperatures due to UHI formation can cause aerosol particles to disperse beyond higher atmospheric boundaries by facilitating rapid mixing, but it does not show any proper trend during the study period. During the day period, soil or barren land contributes to higher LSTs in rural areas, leading to an inverse UHI effect, or cool island effect. Instead of AOD, land use and land cover (LU LC) change shows a good relationship with diurnal LST variations. Higher road density (RD) value regions and the densely built-up areas have shown higher values of LST and are responsible for the nocturnal UHI effect over the study area during both summer and winter.

Abstract:This study aims to fill the research gap by assessing the efficacy of urban blue-green infrastructure in reducing the impacts of Urban Heat Island (UHI) over the newly developed satellite township of Kolkata in the Rajarhat Area. In that process, land-use transformation mapping for the last 40 years (1987-2020) is executed and correlated with LST dynamics. Afterwards, the UHI is mapped, and the Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA) is measured to determine the spatial association of urban hot and coldspots. Results show that between 1987 to 2020, nearly 914% (11.35 km 2 ) of the built-up Area was increased. Accordingly, the mean LST of the entire Area increased by 6°C. Increased temperature has led to the development of UHI patches over bare and impervious areas until new urban green spaces and water features started functioning as coldspots, cooler by 4°C - 6°C than their adjacent hotspots. The efficacy of urban water bodies in mitigating UHI is observed significant compared to vegetation; water bodies dipped the LST by 1.5°C - 2°C more than vegetated areas. UHI management techniques are rarely evaluated in developing countries; urban managers should incorporate these findings into their future planning to mitigate urban thermal discomfort.

Abstract:Urbanization is a global problem with emergent properties. The difference in temperature between urban and rural surfaces is one such property that affects health, energy consumption budgets, regional planning and climate. We used remotely sensed datasets and gridded population to estimate the magnitude of thermal differentials (urban heat islands and/or sinks), the timing of heat differential events, and the controlling variables. The global scope of the study provides a consistent analytical environment that enables identification of the key factors that contribute to deleterious heat differentials. We propose new indices of thermal differential and use them to show particular prevalence of heat islands and sinks in arid regions. A variable ranking analysis indicates that development intensity, vegetation amount and the size of the urban metropolis are the most important urban variables to predict heat differentials. Population was of lesser importance in this study. Urban structure indices were also ranked lower, though a different measurement scale qualifies this conclusion. The results support the paradigm of compact development and incorporation of vegetation to the urban infrastructure.
Impacts of Urban Configuration on Urban Heat Island: an Empirical Study in China Mega-Cities

Abstract:Urban configuration can influence the local thermal environment by altering energy balances. However, previous studies have found that either sprawling urban or compact urban development could intensify urban heat island (UHI) intensity. How urban configurations can mitigate the UHI intensity has drawn full attention. In this study, we quantified the diurnal and seasonal UHI intensities in 36 cities in China and investigated their response to urban configurations. In each city, urban land cover maps were classified from Landsat 8 and UHIs were quantified using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST). Results show that the average UHI intensities of 36 cities vary temporally with a sequence of summer day > summer night > winter night > winter day. Moreover, whether the daytime UHI is higher or lower than the nighttime UHI significantly depends on climatic zones and seasons. Besides, we found that UHIs significantly correlate with urban configurations in two ways. First, for the spatial structure among built-up patches, a lower UHI located in the smaller built-up area with dispersed distribution when compared to the larger built-up patches, if the total built-up area holds constant. Second, for the spatial structure of a single patch, the single patch with more complex shape would mitigate the UHI intensities. Overall, urban configuration and other control variables (e.g., urban characteristics and climatic condition) can explain 41% and 51% of the variance in UHI in summer day and night, respectively. Therefore, the design of urban configuration can serve as an essential practice to mitigate UHI intensity. Considering the difficulties of altering the urban configuration in the urbanized area, planting vegetation might be a great choice to change the urban contiguity and shape complexity with providing an extra cooling effect. Surface urban heat island variation over major Indian cities across different climatic zone

Abstract:<p>Surface urban heat island (SUHI) is a major anthropogenic alteration of the urban environment, and its geospatial pattern remains poorly understand over a larger area. SUHI has been investigated in many regions of the world, but the complete understanding of its dynamics over a large area, across different climatic regime is missing, especially in India. In this study, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), land surface temperature (LST) data from 2003 to 2018 is used to investigate the diurnal, seasonal, and interannual variations in the SUHI intensity, difference in urban and rural LST, across 150 major Indian cities situated over different climatic zones. The result shows the presence of surface urban heat/cool island depending upon climatic zones and seasons. The general sequence of mean SUHI intensity observed over different climatic zones is winter nighttime>summer nighttime>winter daytime>summer daytime. During the daytime, the cities situated in tropical monsoon (Am) (coastal cities), hot steppe (BSh), and hot desert (BWh) climatic zone shows a cool urban island, especially in summer. The nighttime SUHI intensity showed less obvious seasonal variations and always showed positive heat intensity. The cities situated in the humid subtropical (Cwa) zone, which is mainly Indo-Gangetic plain and a major hub of the Indian population, shows strong daytime as well as nighttime SUHI intensity. Mann-Kendall and Sen&#8217;s slope estimator test are used to detect the long-term trend of SUHI intensity in different climatic zones. The results show the presence of a decreasing trend in most of the cities during the daytime as compared to nighttime in both the summer/winter season.</p>

Abstract:Urban heat islands (UHIs) are inadvertent climatic phenomena stemming from anthropogenic activities that pose a formidable challenge as urbanization is an inescapable reality. Hence, UHI-related concerns have garnered critical relevance in research endeavours. This report highlights the findings from global UHI research over the previous 50 years (1973–2022), while, UHIs have been extensively investigated globally, employing a multitude of methodologies spanning from satellite remote sensing to microclimate simulations involving computational fluid dynamics. The report first elucidates the elements that contribute to UHI formation based on findings from over 190 research publications. These elements are intrinsically linked to the morphology of the built environment, including urban geometry, height-to-width ratio, sky view factor, urban materials, and vegetation cover. The report further covers the mitigation measures proposed by researchers worldwide. Mitigation strategies have primarily focused on urban shading, augmenting green spaces, and modifying surface material properties. It discusses how local development control regulations were observed to modulate the factors responsible for UHI formation. Since UHIs exert influence at both macro and micro scales, the study encompasses research conducted at these levels. Finally, it is recommended that future studies investigate the dynamics of the relationship between development control regulations (DCR) and UHI formation. It suggests formulating algorithms capable of forecasting UHI intensity in the post-implementation scenario of DCR. These algorithms should account for factors such as floor space index (FSI), ground coverage norms, open space regulations, height limitations, vertical and horizontal surface material albedo guidelines, and leaf area index (LAI) of green cover.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Urbanization has resulted in many critical issues like increase in pollution levels, sudden climatic changes and the rise of temperature in the urban area, that is the formation of Urban Heat Islands (UHI). As the density of population rises, most of the land areas are being converted into cities and cities grows very rapidly. Due to the UHI effect, the cities are becoming hotter day by day. In India, all the metropolitan cities are victims of UHI effect and the severity of heat formation, necessitates research in this area. The present paper evaluates the trends of UHI studies in Indian cities and its out reach till 2018. Heat Island classification, methods of studying UHI in India and their limitation are discussed. Eventually a comparison of new trends of UHI studies in the world and where India lacks its growth in UHI research are included in this paper. One of the findings is that numerical modelling studies are very limited in India in this field and more focus in this area is required.</p>

Abstract:Urban heat islands (UHIs) are caused by a multitude of changes induced by urbanization. However, the relative importance of biophysical and atmospheric factors in controlling theUHI intensity remains elusive. In this study, we quantify themagnitude of surfaceUHIs (SUHIs), or surface urban cool islands (SUCIs), and elucidate their biophysical and atmospheric drivers on the basis of observational data collected from one urban site and two rural grassland sites in and near the city of Nanjing, China. Results show that during the daytime a strong SUCI effect is observed when the short grassland site is used as the reference site whereas a moderate SUHI effect is observed when the tall grassland is used as the reference site. We find that the former is mostly caused by the lower aerodynamic resistance for convective heat transfer at the urban site and the latter is primarily caused by the higher surface resistance for evapotranspiration at the urban site. At night, SUHIs are observed when either the short or the tall grassland site is used as the reference site and are predominantly caused by the stronger release of heat storage at the urban site. In general, themagnitude of SUHI is much weaker, and even becomes SUCI during daytime, with the short grassland site being the reference site because of its larger aerodynamic resistance. The study highlights that the magnitude of SUHIs and SUCIs is mostly controlled by urban–rural differences of biophysical factors, with urban–rural differences of atmospheric conditions playing a minor role.

Abstract:Urban heat islands are hotter than rural places. Sustainable urban growth and improving urban environments need understanding Urban Heat Island (UHI) causes and finding effective mitigation techniques. This research examines the seasonal deviations in surface temperatures for the UHI effect in Pune, India, focusing on land use patterns and water body cooling. Land use categorization included residential, commercial, industrial, vegetation, and open spaces. The research studied the cooling potential and temperature variance by distance from water bodies in the form of lakes, rivers, and ponds. These aquatic bodies have surface and ambient temperature sensors. Roads, soil, commercial areas, residential areas, industrial areas, and vegetation have all shown increases in NDBI, ranging from 15.84 to 36.45%. Urban regions with heat accumulation and dissipation have been revealed by DEM and contour maps. The research found that the water bodies have a cooling effect on LST till the distance of 350 m. The research finds hotter places and shows how natural features mitigate UHI by analyzing land use patterns and water body cooling. The findings emphasize the significance of green areas and water bodies in urban design and development to improve Pune's climate resilience and inhabitability.

Assessment of land-use land-cover dynamics and urban heat island effect of Dehradun city, North India: a remote sensing approach

Abstract:Urbanisation is a crucial issue for urban planners and researchers worldwide, especially in South Asia, where rapid urbanisation has led to several negative impacts on the environment, economy, and people. Land-use change is one of the associated problems of urbanisation that can lead to an increased land surface temperature (LST) and surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect. This study aimed to investigate the impact of urbanisation on the local climate in Dehradun city, India, by analysing the relationship between land-use and land-cover (LULC) change, LST, and the UHI effect. Geospatial analyses were carried out using Landsat multispectral data from 1996 to 2019. LULC classification using a machine learning-based supervised classification technique, support vector machine and LST were derived using a mono-window algorithm, and the surface UHI (SUHI) effect was quantified using the urban thermal field variance index (UTFVI). The study found that the built-up cover increased by 28%, resulting in seasonal LST increases of 7 °C and 2 °C for the summer and winter seasons, respectively. The findings show that the regions with no SUHI effect reduced significantly from 42.59% in 1996 to 21.55% in 2019, while the strongest SUHI regions increased from 0% in 1996 to 10.7% in 2019. This study contributes to delivering scientific information on the impact of urbanisation and land-use change on the urban thermal environment of the city, which may be useful for policymakers in developing appropriate strategies to reduce the impact of urbanisation on the environment and to improve the quality of life for citizens.

Abstract:Abstract The land surface temperature (LST) increases both spatially and in magnitude as a result of rapid urbanization at the expense of the low radiative surface. This process modifies the urban climate which is attributable to a phenomenon recognized as the Urban Heat Island (UHI). By estimating LST, satellite remote sensing offers a cost-effective and time-saving methodology for spatio-temporal analyses of UHI. The limitation, however, is that urban and rural are becoming outmoded conceptions in landscape classification as a consequence of the high population density, particularly in countries like India. In densely populated regions, the countryside and the cities are no longer differentiated by a clear urban-rural divide. Thus, the traditional study of UHI can be enhanced by the adaptation of the newly developed “Local Climate Zones” (LCZ) characterization scheme based on building types and land cover characteristics. This LCZ mapping is an excellent method for categorizing urban areas associated with the most perceptible change in climate in urban areas, namely UHI. This paper aims to identify the LCZs dynamics over a decade from 2010 to 2020 in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA), the largest urban agglomeration in eastern India. The LCZ classification scheme has divided the landscapes into 17 conventional classes, 10 built-up classes, and 7 land cover classes that affect air temperature at a screen height of 1-2 meters above the ground. Each LCZ is distinguishable from another by its thermal property. Each of the classes will help to understand the nature of the local climates. It has thus become comparatively simple to estimate Urban Heat Island Intensity (UHII) with the help of the LCZ scheme. The paper explains the typical features of each LCZ of KMA and accomplishes a discussion on the efficiency of mapping UHII from LCZ classes.
SPATIO-TEMPORAL DYNAMICS OF URBAN THERMAL ENVIRONMENT IN UDAIPUR CITY, RAJASTHAN, INDIA

Abstract:Abstract. The Udaipur urban agglomeration was selected to analyse the urban heat island (UHI) effect in the area from 2005 to 2017. Landsat 7 ETM+ sensor data was used to derive land surface temperatures (LST) and map landscape characteristics. The agglomeration was classified into seven land use land cover classes including agriculture cropped, agriculture fallow, barren, built up, scrub, vegetation and water using unsupervised classification method. The LST results were obtained using NDVI method. Urban heat island intensities were mapped using z-score method. Regions with UHI values of above 2 standard deviations were considered to reflect UHI effect. Results show an overall decrease of 10.2 percent in agricultural cropped and fallow lands. The scrub class also shows a moderate decline of 2.3 percent. Increase in area were observed for built up, barren and vegetation classes by 8.8, 2.1 and 1.9 percent respectively. The dominant LULC change was the transformation of agricultural lands to built-up class. The class-wise mean LST observations increase in order of water, vegetation, cropped, fallow, built up, scrub and barren land. The mean LST records an increase of 1.7° C from 30.1° C to 31.8° C over the study period. Results suggest that UHI effects are more prominent in urban fringe area corresponding with the built up and barren land cover classes contrary to its core area. Built up areas surrounded by barren lands left vacant for city’s sprawl in the future exhibit highest UHI intensities.
Remote sensing of the urban heat island effect across biomes in the continental USA

Abstract:Impervious surface area (ISA) from the Landsat TM-based NLCD 2001 dataset and land surface temperature (LST) from MODIS averaged over three annual cycles (2003–2005) are used in a spatial analysis to assess the urban heat island (UHI) skin temperature amplitude and its relationship to development intensity, size, and ecological setting for 38 of the most populous cities in the continental United States. Development intensity zones based on %ISA are defined for each urban area emanating outward from the urban core to the non-urban rural areas nearby and used to stratify sampling for land surface temperatures and NDVI. Sampling is further constrained by biome and elevation to insure objective intercomparisons between zones and between cities in different biomes permitting the definition of hierarchically ordered zones that are consistent across urban areas in different ecological setting and across scales.We find that ecological context significantly influences the amplitude of summer daytime UHI (urban–rural temperature difference) the largest (8°C average) observed for cities built in biomes dominated by temperate broadleaf and mixed forest. For all cities combined, ISA is the primary driver for increase in temperature explaining 70% of the total variance in LST. On a yearly average, urban areas are substantially warmer than the non-urban fringe by 2.9°C, except for urban areas in biomes with arid and semiarid climates. The average amplitude of the UHI is remarkably asymmetric with a 4.3°C temperature difference in summer and only 1.3°C in winter. In desert environments, the LST's response to ISA presents an uncharacteristic “U-shaped” horizontal gradient decreasing from the urban core to the outskirts of the city and then increasing again in the suburban to the rural zones. UHI's calculated for these cities point to a possible heat sink effect. These observational results show that the urban heat island amplitude both increases with city size and is seasonally asymmetric for a large number of cities across most biomes. The implications are that for urban areas developed within forested ecosystems the summertime UHI can be quite high relative to the wintertime UHI suggesting that the residential energy consumption required for summer cooling is likely to increase with urban growth within those biomes.

Abstract:The climate has an impact on the urban thermal environment, and the magnitude of the surface urban heat island (SUHI) and urban cool island (UCI) vary across the world's climatic zones. This literature review investigated: 1) the variations in the SUHI and UCI intensity under different climatic backgrounds, and 2) the effect of vegetation types, landscape composition, urban configuration, and water bodies on the SUHI. The SUHI had a higher intensity in tropical (Af (tropical rainy climate, Köppen climate classification), Am (tropical monsoon climate), subtropical (Cfa, subtropical humid climate), and humid continental (Dwa, semi-humid and semi-arid monsoon climate) climate zones. The magnitude of the UCI was low compared to the SUHI across the climate zones. The cool and dry Mediterranean (Cfb, temperate marine climate; Csb, temperate mediterranean climate; Cfa) and tropical climate (Af) areas had a higher cooling intensity. For cities with a desert climate (BWh, tropical desert climate), a reverse pattern was found. The difference in the SUHI in the night-time was greater than in the daytime for most cities across the climate zones. The extent of green space cooling was related to city size, the adjacent impervious surface, and the local climate. Additionally, the composition of urban landscape elements was more significant than their configuration for sustaining the urban thermal environment. Finally, we identified future research gaps for possible solutions in the context of sustainable urbanization in different climate zones.

Two decades of nighttime surface urban heat island intensity analysis over nine major populated cities of India and implications for heat stress

Abstract:Warmer global climate and urban heat islands (UHIs) interact, by exacerbating heatwaves and increasing the extreme heat days in cities. The implications of added heat stress in urban environments due to intensifying surface UHIs (SUHIs) is of utmost concern. Seasonal, annual and decadal nighttime SUHI intensities (SUHIIs), from 2001 to 2020, for nine major populated cities of India are analyzed. This includes five megacities- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Chennai, and four incipient megacities- Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, and Pune. The key role of increasing urbanization (pre- and post-2010) in expansion and intensification of nighttime SUHIs in India is highlighted. For all cities either pre-monsoon (MAM) or winter (December-February; DJF) seasons show the strongest SUHII development. During the 2001–2010, and the 2011–2020 decade, a nighttime SUHII maxima of respectively (i) 2.1°C and 2.5°C for Delhi, (ii) 1.3°C and 1.5°C for Mumbai, (iii) 1.3°C and 1.5°C for Kolkata, (iv) 0.6°C and 1.0°C Bangalore, (v) 1.7°C and 1.9°C for Chennai, (vi) 1.8°C and 2.3°C for Hyderabad, (vii) 2.8°C and 3.1°C for Ahmedabad, (viii) 1.9°C and 2.4°C for Surat, and (ix) 0.8°C and 1.3°C for Pune is noted. Further, all incipient megacities showed a mean annual growth rate of nighttime SUHII of over 0.007°C/year, substantially greater than in the megacities. High SUHII magnitudes, greater growth rates of SUHII, and huge populations, severely compounds the vulnerability of Indian cities to excessive heat exposure risk, especially during MAM heatwaves. Lastly, the implications of nighttime SUHII findings from the present study, on the increase in heat stress, the loss of labor productivity and the rise in heat-related mortality rate is emphasized. The study recommends implementation of city-specific action plans to mitigate the heat stressed urban environment. Targeted use of cooling strategies in localized hotspots within the urban areas where high intensity SUHIs are likely to form is also suggested.

Abstract:The phenomenon of urban heat island ( UHI ) is characterized by industrial, economic development, unplanned and unregulated land use as well as a rapid increase in urban population, resulting a warmer inner core in contrast to the surrounding natural environment, thus requiring immediate attention for a sustainable urban environment. This study examined the land use/land cover (LULC) change, pattern of spectral indices (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI ; Normalized Difference Water Index, NDWI ; Normalized Difference Built-up Index, NDBI and Normalized Difference Bareness Index, NDBaI ), retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) and Urban Thermal Field Variance Index ( UTFVI ) as well as identification of UHI from 2000 to 2022. The relationship among LST and LULC spectral indices was estimated using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The Landsat-5 (TM) and Landsat-8 (OLI/TIRS) satellite data have been used, and all tasks were completed through various geospatial tools like ArcGIS 10.8, Google Earth Engine (GEE), Erdas Imagine 2014 and R-Programming. The result of this study depicts over the period that built-up area and water bodies increased by 119.78 and 35.70%, respectively. On the contrary, fallow and barren decreased by 55.33 and 32.31% respectively over the period. The mean and maximum LST increased by 3.61 °C and 2.62 °C, and the study reveals that a high concentration of UTFVI and UHI in industrial areas, coal mining sites and their surroundings, but the core urban area has observed low LST and intensity of UHI than the peripheral areas due to maintained vegetation cover and water bodies. An inverse relationship has been found among LST, NDVI and NDWI , while adverse relationships were observed among LST, NDBI and NDBaI throughout the period. Sustainable environment planning is needful for the urban area, as well as the periphery region and plantation is one of the controlling measures of LST and UHI increment. This work provides the scientific base for the study of the thermal environment which can be one of the variables for planning of Asansol City and likewise other cities of the country as well as the world.

Abstract:Urban growth and development has significantly affected urban heat island (UHI) due to urbanization. Particularly in the cities in developing countries, the assessment of UHI has emerged as one of the core research themes as it significantly affects the ecological environment and livability in cities. Thus, the assessment of UHI is crucial for climate mitigation and sustainable urban landscape planning. This study identifies the dynamics of landscape patterns and the impact of composition and configuration on the thermal environment in English Bazar Urban Agglomeration (EBUA), Eastern India, along the urban–rural gradient (URG) approach. Geospatial approaches and spatial metrics were employed to assess the impact of the landscape pattern on the thermal environment. Descriptive and inferential statistics have also been used to find the effects of landscape patterns on the thermal environment. The result has also been validated based on the location and correlation analysis. The built-up area increased by about 63.54%; vegetation covers and water bodies declined by 56.72% and 67.99% from 2001 to 2021. Land surface temperature (LST) decreased with increasing distance from the core of the city. LST declined by about 0.45 °C per kilometer from the core of the city towards the outside. LST had a positive correlation with IS and a negative correlation with green space (GS) and blue space (BS). The mean aggregation of the impervious patches was larger (73.21%) than the GS (43.18%) and BS (49.02%). The aggregation of impervious surface (IS) was positively correlated, and aggregations of GS and BS had a negative correlation with LST. Findings suggest that the spatial composition and configuration of the impervious surface, GS, and BS must be considered in landscape planning and design framework to make the city more livable.

Abstract:Urbanization-induced rapid land use/land cover change (LULCC) modifies the thermal characteristics of a region at local scale and often creates urban heat island (UHI) effects. Delhi also experiences such enhancing UHI scenario. In present study, LULCC was linked with the land surface temperature (LST), and surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) was measured at the sub-district level. Landsat imageries and MODIS LST product for 2001, 2009 and 2017 were main data sources. LULC classification and LST were derived using maximum likelihood classification and single-channel algorithm techniques, respectively. Proposed LULC classification scheme was built-up, current fallows land, bare land (or source landscape); and crop land, vegetation and water bodies (or sink landscape). SUHII was calculated using the contribution index of both source and sink landscapes and landscape index (LI). Results from LI also supported with temperature vegetation feature space index, transformed difference vegetation index, enhanced vegetation index, diurnal temperature range, population density and transect analysis. The result showed that sub-districts of North, North-East, East and West Delhi were more prone to SUHII due to the highly dense built-up area and industrial area. SUHII was comparatively low in the sub-districts of South and South-West Delhi because of less built-up area as well the presence of greenery. Not only built-up but also fallow land and barren land contributed significantly in some places, i.e. South and South-West Delhi. Besides, urban green space and green crop field reduced the LST sufficiently in some areas, i.e. Najafgarh and New Delhi. Again, this study could help to understand UHI in Delhi at sub-district level.
