Abstract:Objective: To examine the differential associations of cigarette retail marketing practices on youth smoking uptake. Design: Analyses from annual, nationally representative, cross-sectional surveys of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in the United States. Setting: The February 1999 through June 2003 Monitoring the Future surveys involved 109,308 students and data on retail cigarette marketing collected from 966 communities in which the students reside, as part of the Bridging the Gap Initiative: Research Informing Practice and Policy for Healthy Youth Behavior. Participants: A total of 26,301 students were selected for this study. Main exposures: Point-of-sale advertising, promotions, prices, and placement. Outcome measure: Using a smoking uptake measure to account for stages that identify the process by which adolescents begin smoking, we calculated odds ratios and confidence intervals through generalized ordered logit analyses, with weighted data that controlled for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and accounted for clustering at the community level. Results: Higher levels of advertising, lower cigarette prices, and greater availability of cigarette promotions were associated with smoking uptake. Advertising increased the likelihood of youth initiating smoking, price increased the likelihood of smoking at most levels of uptake, and availability of promotions increased the likelihood that youth will move from experimentation to regular smoking. Conclusions: Cigarette retail marketing practices increase the likelihood of smoking uptake. These findings suggest that specific restrictions on retail cigarette marketing may reduce youth smoking.
Longitudinal association between exposure to e-cigarette advertising and youth e-cigarette use in the United States

Abstract:Background and aim: E-cigarette marketing strategies are targeting and appealing to youth, particularly through social media. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between recalled exposure to e-cigarette advertisements on social media and across five traditional advertising mediums, and e-cigarette use, a year later. Design: Weighted regression analyses of waves 4 (W4; 2017), 4.5 (W4.5; 2018) and 5 (W5; 2019) from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Setting: United States. Participants: Youth aged 12-17 years at W4 or W4.5 (N = 16,671). Measurements: We examined the association between past 30-day recalled exposure to six different e-cigarette advertisement mediums (gas stations/convenience stores, social media/websites, newspaper/magazines, radio, billboard, TV) in W4.5 and past 30-day and past 12-month e-cigarette use in W5, while controlling for W4 e-cigarette use and covariates such as sociodemographic variables, academic performance, peer cigarette/e-cigarette use and other substance use. Associations between recalled exposure (W4.5) and lifetime use (W5) among e-cigarette naïve youth at W4.5 (N = 8,914) were also assessed. Findings: Past 12-month and past 30-day e-cigarette use was significantly associated with recalled exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites (aOR = 1.65 [99.17 %CI = 1.36,1.99; aOR = 1.49 [99.17 %CI = 1.13, 1.97]) and gas stations/convenience stores (aOR = 1.33; [99.17 %CI = 1.11,1.58]; aOR = 1.27 [99.17 %CI = 1.03,1.58]). Exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites (aOR = 1.35 [99.17 %CI = 1.04,1.74]) and gas stations/convenience stores (aOR = 1.67 [99.17 %CI = 1.31,2.13]) was significantly associated with lifetime e-cigarette use among baseline youth who were e-cigarette naïve. Conclusions: Exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites and gas stations/convenience stores was associated with youth e-cigarette use a year later. Stricter restrictions on marketing in these mediums is needed to limit youth exposure to e-cigarette marketing messages if we are to reduce e-cigarette use.
Advertising Exposure From Online and Offline Sources and Youth Tobacco Use: Findings From the Adolescents, Place, and Behavior Study

Abstract:Introduction: Tobacco use among adolescents is an ongoing public health concern. Youth tobacco use has been associated with advertising, from both online sources and retail environments. Aims and methods: This study examined associations between exposure to tobacco advertisements from tobacco retail outlets (TROs), internet, and social media sources and ever tobacco use among adolescents. Data were obtained from youth, aged 11-17 years (N = 401) from Richmond, VA. Bayesian index and group index models were fitted to estimate indices of exposure to (1) social media use, (2) tobacco ads on social media, and (3) TRO store visits and their association with ever tobacco use. The most important components of the exposure indices were also determined based on the index component weights from the Bayesian index models. Results: In Bayesian index models of single exposures, each exposure index was significantly associated with tobacco use. In the best-fitting model, social media tobacco ads (odds ratio [OR] = 2.2; 95% credible interval [CI]: 1.2, 4.5) and TRO store visits (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.1, 2.3) were significantly associated with ever tobacco use, as was older age (OR = 1.4; 95% CI: 1.2, 1.8). Index component weights revealed Snapchat ad frequency as the most important platform in the social media index and convenience stores as the most important type of store in the TRO index. Conclusions: Exposure to pro-tobacco advertisements on social media and visits to TROs are associated with adolescent ever tobacco use. Results provide support for policies that would restrict the promotion of tobacco products at TROs and on social media. Tobacco regulations and interventions targeting convenience stores and Snapchat may be warranted to reduce youth tobacco use. Implications: Current evidence provide support for policies that would restrict the promotion of tobacco products at TROs and on social media. Findings suggest that regulations and interventions that specifically target advertisements in convenience stores and on Snapchat may be currently warranted to reduce youth tobacco use.
Analysis of opioid and amyloid peptides using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.

Abstract:The imaging capability and high detection sensitivity of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) makes it a potentially attractive complement to other mass spectrometry methods, such as ESI and MALDI, for the analysis of proteins and peptides. We have explored this possibility by performing a systematic analysis of synthetic opioid and amyloid peptides with ToF-SIMS using Bi(3)(+) and Au(3)(+) primary ions. In the low mass region of the spectra, a number of single amino acid ion peaks were detected, providing information about the amino acid content in each peptide. In the medium and high mass range of the spectra, peaks corresponding to multiple amino acid ions (backbone cleavage ions) as well as molecular ions were detected, allowing for the determination of the amino acid sequence and the molecular mass of the entire peptide, respectively. Detection efficiencies were determined for the molecular ions of some of the peptides, indicating detection limits in the attomole range. The fragmentation patterns observed in the ToF-SIMS analysis of opioid and amyloid peptides showed interesting similarities with collision-induced dissociation (CID) studies using other mass spectrometry methods. The present work provides important progress toward ToF-SIMS proteomics.

Abstract:Limited research has investigated the impact of e-cigarette advertising and reviews on the progression of e-cigarette use among young adults in the US. This study utilized five-wave longitudinal data (2018–2020) with 3006 young adults aged 18–34, reporting exposure to e-cigarette advertisements or reviews at Wave 1 (W1) and W3. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine the prospective associations between frequent exposure to e-cigarette advertisements or reviews and e-cigarette use progression in four groups: never users (n = 1271 at W1), former users (previously used but quit ≥ 6 months ago, n = 422 at W1), recent former users (used in the past 6 months but not in the past month, n = 186 at W1), and current users (used in the past month, n = 1127 at W1). Among baseline former users, frequent exposure to e-cigarette reviews was associated with current use at 6-month follow-up (aOR = 4.40, 95%CI = 1.46–13.29). Among baseline current users, frequent exposure to e-cigarette reviews was associated with increased days of use at 6-month follow-up (IRR = 1.20, 95%CI = 1.07–1.34) and 12-month follow-up (IRR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.03–1.35). E-cigarette reviews may contribute to relapse among recent former users and increased usage frequency among current users, highlighting the need for enhanced e-cigarette promotional activity regulation.

Abstract:Background: Little is known about the influence of e-cigarette marketing features on the antecedents of e-cigarette use. Purpose: Using an eye-tracking experiment, we examined visual attention to common features in e-cigarette ads and its associations with positive e-cigarette perceptions among young adults. Methods: Young adults (ages 18-29) who smoke cigarettes (n = 40) or do not use tobacco (n = 71) viewed 30 e-cigarette ads on a computer screen. Eye-tracking technology measured dwell time (fixation duration) and entry time (time to first fixation) for 14 pre-defined ad features. Participants then completed a survey about perceptions of e-cigarettes shown in the ads. We used regression models to examine the associations between ad features and standardized attention metrics among all participants and by tobacco-use status and person-aggregated standardized attention for each ad feature and positive e-cigarette perceptions. Results: Dwell time was the longest for smoker-targeted claims, positive experience claims, and price promotions. Entry time was the shortest for multiple flavor descriptions, nicotine warnings, and people. Those who do not use tobacco had a longer dwell time for minor sales restrictions and longer entry time for purchasing information than those who smoke. Longer dwell time for multiple flavor descriptions was associated with e-cigarette appeal. A shorter entry time for fruit flavor description was associated with positive e-cigarette-use expectancies. Conclusions: Young adults allocated attention differently to various e-cigarette ad features, and such viewing patterns were largely similar by tobacco-use statuses. Multiple or fruit flavors may be the features that contribute to the positive influence of e-cigarette marketing among young adults.
Prevalence and Correlates of Flavored Novel Oral Nicotine Product Use Among a National Sample of Youth

Abstract:Background Flavored novel oral nicotine products (ONP), such as pouches, gum, lozenges, tablets, and gummies, have recently entered the US market but have not been authorized for smoking cessation. This study assessed the prevalence and correlates of ONPs in a national sample of youth who smoked little filtered cigars or cigarillos (LCCs) or were susceptible to LCCs. Methods We conducted a national online survey from September-October 2022, as part of a study to develop cigar warnings among youth. Those aged 15-20 years old who reported using (ever or current) or susceptibility to little filtered cigars or cigarillos (LCCs) were eligible. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses assessed the prevalence of flavored ONP use and associations with other past 30-day tobacco product use and participant characteristics. Results Approximately one-fifth (17.1%) of the sample (n=680) reported past month flavored ONP use. Any past month tobacco use was correlated with past month flavored ONP use ( p s<.001), increasing from 17.1% in the overall sample to 26.8% among those reporting e-cigarette use, 41.4% (LCCs), 47.8% (waterpipe tobacco), 61.8% (large cigars), and 69.1% (smokeless tobacco). The number of products used in the past month was significantly associated with higher odds of ONPs in the past month in a multivariable logistic regression model (aOR2.26; 95% CI: 1.92, 2.65). Discussion Almost one-fifth of participants who use or are susceptible to cigar use in our national sample of youth use ONPs. Dual/poly use of other tobacco products and ONPs among youth suggests that many of these youth may be addicted to nicotine. Additional surveillance and regulation of ONPs that exhibit enticing characteristics, such as flavors, kid-friendly formulations, and targeted marketing/branding may be needed.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of point-of-sale (POS) cigarette displays on unplanned purchases.METHODS: Intercept interviews were conducted with customers observed purchasing cigarettes from retail outlets featuring POS cigarette displays. Measures included intention to purchase cigarettes prior to entering the store, unprompted and prompted salience of POS tobacco displays, urge to buy cigarettes as a result of seeing the POS display, brand switching and support for a ban on POS cigarette displays.RESULTS: In total, 206 daily smokers aged 18-76 years (90 male, 116 female) were interviewed. Unplanned cigarette purchases were made by 22% of participants. POS displays influenced nearly four times as many unplanned purchases as planned purchases (47% vs 12%, p<0.01). Brand switching was reported among 5% of participants, half of whom were influenced by POS displays. Four times as many smokers were supportive of a ban on POS tobacco displays than unsupportive (49% vs 12%), and 28% agreed that such a ban would make it easier to quit.CONCLUSIONS: POS tobacco displays act as a form of advertising even in the absence of advertising materials. They stimulate unplanned cigarette purchases, play an important role in brand selection and tempt smokers trying to quit. This justifies removing POS tobacco displays from line of sight-something that very few smokers in our sample would object to.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether frequent social media use and liking/following tobacco brand accounts was associated with increased risk of tobacco and polytobacco initiation over approximately 1-year follow-up among youth with no prior tobacco use.METHODS: Associations between measures of social media engagement (daily social media use and liking/following tobacco brands) and tobacco initiation risk were examined using data from Waves 2 and 3 (2014-2015) of the US Population Assessment for Tobacco and Health study. Separate log-binomial models, accounting for missing data via multiple imputation and using propensity score adjustment to address confounding, estimated the adjusted relative risk (aRR) of any tobacco initiation and poly-use (2 + products) initiation at 1-year follow-up.RESULTS: Among the 8,672 youth with no prior tobacco use (49.3% female, mean [SD] age 14.1 [1.7]), 63.5% used social media at least daily, and 3.3% reported liking/following ≥ 1 tobacco brands on social media. Those reporting daily or more frequent social media use (compared to less) were at increased risk for tobacco (aRR 1.67; 95% CI 1.38-2.02) and polytobacco initiation (aRR 1.32; 95% CI 0.98-1.78). Although results were imprecise, liking/following ≥ 1 tobacco brands on social media (versus none) was associated with tobacco (aRR 1.34; 95% CI 0.95-1.89) or polytobacco initiation (aRR 1.60; 95% CI 0.99-2.60). In sensitivity analyses, liking/following cigarette or cigarillo brands was associated with polytobacco initiation.CONCLUSIONS: This study adds to a growing evidence-base describing the exposure of youth to tobacco-related social media content. Such content-often generated by tobacco companies-may contribute to youth tobacco initiation.

Abstract:The Bloch–Siegert (B–S) B1+ mapping method has been shown to be fast and accurate, yet it suffers from high Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and moderately long echo time. An adiabatic RF pulse design is introduced here for optimizing the off‐resonant B–S RF pulse to achieve more B–S B1+ measurement sensitivity for a given pulse width. The extra sensitivity can be used for higher angle‐to‐noise ratio B1+ maps or traded off for faster scans. Using numerical simulations and phantom experiments, it is shown that a numerically optimized 2‐ms adiabatic B‐S pulse is 2.5 times more efficient than a conventional 6‐ms Fermi‐shaped B–S pulse. The Development and Testing of a Point-of-Sale E-Cigarette Health Communication Campaign

Abstract:Adolescents and young adults continue to use e-cigarettes, and communication campaigns are needed to decrease use among these populations. We developed and tested a point-of-sale communication campaign focused on e-cigarette chemical exposure. We developed messages based on formative research and tested them (versus text-only messages) in a nationally-representative online survey among adolescents and young adults (16-25) (Phase 1). Based on survey findings, we selected a message focused on nicotine and brain development for the point-of-sale trial (Phase 2). We then conducted a cluster-randomized trial at six gas stations with convenience stores, randomly assigned to the intervention (messages displayed) or no message control condition. We conducted intercept surveys with repeated cross-sectional samples of 50 participants (ages 16-25) per store, at baseline and a four-week follow-up. Phase 1 included 1,636 participants in the online study. Intervention messages were rated as more attention grabbing than plain text messages (p < .05), though were rated similarly on other outcomes. Exposure to intervention messages resulted in larger changes from pre- to posttest for beliefs about addiction and relative harms versus cigarettes (p < .05). Phase 2 included 586 participants in the point-of-sale study. Real-world campaign exposure was low (31.8%), and no differences were found between conditions. E-cigarette prevention messages focused on nicotine's impact on brain development show promise. However, garnering attention for communication campaigns in saturated point-of-sale environments, often dominated by tobacco advertising, is challenging. Future efforts should utilize additional communication channels to directly target adolescents and young adults.
Factors associated with transitions in tobacco product use states among young adults aged 18–29 years

Abstract:Background and Objectives This study examined young adults' tobacco use transitions based on their past 30‐day use states, and identified factors associated with their transitions. Methods Participants (N = 12377) were young adults aged 18‐29 years at Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. Self‐reported tobacco use states were categorized by the number of past‐month use days (0, 1–4, 5–8, 9–12, 13–30 days) for cigarettes, electronic cigarettes [e‐cigarettes], traditional cigars, filtered cigars, cigarillos, smokeless tobacco (SLT), and hookah. Multistate Markov models examined transitions between use states across Waves 1–5 of unweighted PATH data and multinomial logistic regressions examined predictors of transitions. Results Most young adults remained nonusers across adjacent waves for all products (88%–99%). Collapsed across waves, transitioning from use at any level to nonuse (average 46%–67%) was more common than transitioning from nonuse to use at any level (average 4%–10%). Several factors that predicted riskier patterns of use (i.e., transitioning to use and/or remaining a user across adjacent waves) were similar across most products: male, Black, Hispanic, lower education levels, and lower harm perceptions. In contrast, other factors predicted riskier patterns for only select products (e.g., e‐cigarette and SLT use among Whites). Discussion and Conclusions Few sampled young adults escalated their tobacco use over time, and escalations for many products were predicted by similar factors. Scientific Significance Prevention and regulatory efforts targeted towards adolescents should continue, but also be expanded into young adulthood. These same efforts should consider both shared and unique factors that influence use transitions.

Exposure to tobacco coupons among U.S. middle and high school students

Abstract:Background: Tobacco marketing contributes to increased tobacco use susceptibility and sustained use. There are limited data on youth exposure to tobacco coupons, a type of pro-tobacco promotion. Purpose: To explore channels through which youth report exposure to coupons and characteristics associated with this exposure. This may help inform efforts aimed at decreasing youth exposure to advertising and promotion. Methods: Data from the 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey were analyzed in 2013 to estimate the self-reported prevalence of U.S. middle and high school student exposure to coupons through various channels. Associations among exposure to coupons and demographics, tobacco use, living with a tobacco user, and receptivity to tobacco marketing were examined using multivariate logistic regression models. Results: Approximately 13% of students reported exposure to tobacco coupons in the past 30 days through mail, digital communications, or tobacco packages. Prevalence was greatest among current tobacco users (34.0%) and those receptive to tobacco marketing (23.4%) compared to non-tobacco users (9.3%) and those not receptive to tobacco marketing (8.2%), respectively. Coupon exposure varied by sex, grade, and race/ethnicity. In adjusted models, current tobacco use (AOR=3.4, 95% CI=3.0, 3.9); living with a tobacco user (AOR=2.1, 95% CI=1.9, 2.4); and receptivity to tobacco marketing (AOR=2.3, 95% CI=2.0, 2.7) were independently associated with coupon exposure. Conclusions: Findings from this study indicate that despite restrictions on marketing to youth, youth are still being exposed to tobacco promotions such as coupons. Efforts to limit youth exposure may be valuable in reducing curiosity, susceptibility, and initiation.

Abstract:Importance: Approximately 90% of adult smokers first tried a cigarette by 18 years of age, and even infrequent smoking in adolescence is associated with established adult smoking. Noncigarette tobacco use is increasing and could stimulate subsequent conventional cigarette smoking in youths.Objective: To estimate the longitudinal association between noncigarette tobacco use and subsequent cigarette smoking initiation among US youth.Design, Setting, and Participants: In this prospective cohort study of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) waves 1 (September 12, 2013, to December 14, 2014) and 2 (October 23, 2014, to October 30, 2015), a nationally representative sample of youths who never smoked a conventional cigarette at baseline and completed wave 2 follow-up (N = 10 384) was studied. PATH retention at follow-up was 87.9%.Exposures: Ever use and past 30-day use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), hookah, noncigarette combustible tobacco, or smokeless tobacco at baseline.Main Outcomes and Measures: Ever use and past 30-day use of cigarettes at follow-up.Results: The present analysis was based on the 10 384 PATH youth respondents who reported never having smoked a cigarette in wave 1 and whose cigarette ever or past 30-day use was reported in wave 2 (mean [SD] age, 14.3 [1.7] years; age range, 12-17 years; 5087 [49.1%] female; 4829 [52.5%] white). At 1-year follow-up, 469 (4.6%) of all baseline never-smoking youths had tried a cigarette and 219 (2.1%) had smoked a cigarette within the past 30 days. Cigarette ever use at follow-up was higher among youths who had ever used e-cigarettes (78 [19.1%]), hookah (60 [18.3%]), noncigarette combustible tobacco (45 [19.2%]), or smokeless tobacco (29 [18.8%]) at baseline. After adjusting for sociodemographic, environmental, and behavioral smoking risk factors and for baseline ever use of other tobacco products, the odds of past 30-day cigarette use at follow-up were approximately twice as high among baseline ever users of e-cigarettes (odds ratio [OR], 1.87; 95% CI, 1.15-3.05), hookah (OR, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.17-3.17), noncigarette combustible tobacco (OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.00-3.19), and smokeless tobacco (OR, 2.07; 95% CI, 1.10-3.87). Youths who had tried more than 1 type of tobacco product at baseline had 3.81 (95% CI, 2.22-6.54) greater adjusted odds of past 30-day cigarette smoking at follow-up than did baseline never tobacco users.Conclusions and Relevance: Any use of e-cigarettes, hookah, noncigarette combustible tobacco, or smokeless tobacco was independently associated with cigarette smoking 1 year later. Use of more than 1 product increased the odds of progressing to cigarette use.

Abstract:With ongoing evolution of advanced ultrasound diagnostic in prenatal care the trend is to detect potential fetal anomalies in the first trimester if possible. Complex knowledge of normal fetal anatomy, embryology and ultrasound anatomy is important to be able to identify subtle abnormalities. In this review we demonstrate the possibilities of ultrasound imaging of fetal brain at late first trimester and describe normal central nervous system development week by week. Original images are presented.
Associations of e-cigarette advertising exposure with curiosity and susceptibility among U.S. adolescents: National Youth Tobacco Surveys, 2014-2020

Abstract:Introduction: Despite an evolving e-cigarette environment, few studies have looked at adolescent exposure to e-cigarette advertising over time and its associations with curiosity about and susceptibility to using e-cigarettes. We examined e-cigarette advertising exposure and its associations with curiosity and susceptibility across multiple years among adolescents who have never used e-cigarettes. Methods: We obtained data from the National Youth Tobacco Surveys (NYTSs), 2014-2020 (N = 97,496). The NYTS identified e-cigarette advertising exposure from four channels: Internet, newspapers and magazines, convenience stores, and TV. Logistic regressions explored e-cigarette advertising exposure over time and the associations between exposure from the four channels and both curiosity and susceptibility to using e-cigarettes. Results: Youth exposure to e-cigarette advertising on the Internet and in convenience stores formed an increase-decrease-increase pattern from 2014 to 2020, whereas exposure in newspapers and magazines and on TV generally decreased over this period. Exposure on the Internet and in convenience stores was consistently associated with curiosity and susceptibility; but exposure in newspapers and magazines and on TV was sporadically associated with the outcomes. Conclusions: Despite a changing e-cigarette marketplace, youth were consistently exposed to e-cigarette advertising, especially on the Internet and in convenience stores. This pattern is worrisome, as it may increase youth curiosity and susceptibility to using e-cigarettes. Comprehensive tobacco prevention efforts to prevent e-cigarette use in adolescents should continue to restrict e-cigarette advertising and marketing, thereby reducing exposure and discouraging e-cigarette use. Regular efforts should also be made to educate adolescents about the risks of using e-cigarettes to counteract the impact of high e-cigarette advertising exposure.
Appealing characteristics of E-cigarette marketing in the retail environment among adolescents

Abstract:Background: Nearly 3 million U.S. adolescents use e-cigarettes. E-cigarette marketing is associated with adolescent e-cigarette use; however, studies have not asked adolescents their perceptions about whether and which e-cigarette marketing in retail stores influences purchase and use. Methods: Eleven 90-minute focus groups with 12-19-year-olds (mean age 15.7, 46.6 % female) from 11 U.S. states (n = 58) recruited through Instagram and schools (May 2021-Aug 2022). Photographs of e-cigarette marketing in and around retail stores were used to aid discussion. Thematic analysis identified themes related to appealing marketing characteristics. Results: Adolescents indicated that e-cigarette marketing in and around retail stores arouses their curiosity, reminds them to buy, and normalizes using e-cigarettes. Adolescents identified specific e-cigarette marketing characteristics that they believed influence their decision to purchase and use e-cigarettes including the Tobacco Power Wall, free samples and flavor smelling samples, price incentives such as discounts and starter-kits, e-cigarette displays near checkout encouraging grab-and-go, displays near food, snacks or candy, and e-cigarette advertising through posters on store windows and stickers at checkout. Adolescents reported combining online and social media strategies to bypass age verification in retail stores (e.g., buying gift cards online and using them in stores). Adolescents suggested adding warning images on negative health effects of e-cigarettes, increasing prominence of minimum-age-of-tobacco-sale signs, and developing marketing education as counter-marketing strategies. Conclusions: Adolescents indicate that specific e-cigarette marketing characteristics in retail stores influence their purchase and use decisions. Addressing such e-cigarette marketing exposures in retail stores through counter-marketing messages may bolster adolescent e-cigarette prevention efforts.

Abstract:As part of the validation of an integrated bioassay for systemic toxicity, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, we evaluated the effects of four pesticides, four chlorinated solvents, and two other industrial chemicals in Fischer 344 rats. The pesticides included carbaryl, triadimefon, chlordane, and heptachlor; the solvents included dichloromethane (DCM), carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene (TCE), and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, PER); and the industrial chemicals were di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and phenol. In the developmental toxicity studies, timed-pregnant rats were treated by gavage with vehicle or 1 of 2 dose levels of each compound on gestation d 6-19. The dams were allowed to deliver and their litters were examined on postnatal d 1, 3, and 6. Litter weights were determined on postnatal d 1 and 6. Implants were also counted to determine prenatal loss. Maternal toxicity was evidenced by dose-related alterations in weight gain for all 10 compounds. Clinical signs of maternal toxicity were present for all chemicals except chlordane and heptachlor. DEHP exposure resulted in the most pronounced developmental toxicity (high levels of pre- and postnatal mortality), whereas chlordane induced extensive postnatal loss. Of the solvents, only DCM did not cause a high incidence of full-litter resorption. Phenol, heptachlor, triadimefon, and carbaryl showed only slight potential for developmental toxicity. Malformations suggestive of teratogenicity included kinked tail (phenol), microphthalmia (TCE, PER, DEHP), and cleft palate with renal agenesis (DEHP). Although several findings (eye defects caused by TCE and PER, full-litter resorption and delayed parturition caused by PER, and delayed parturition/dystocia associated with triadimefon) have not been previously reported, the results are generally consistent with previous reports and highlight the importance and relative ease of incorporation of developmental evaluations into a multidisciplinary screening battery.
Attention, Recall, and Perceived Effectiveness Among Young Adult Users and Non-Users

Abstract:Limited research has examined attention to these cigar-specific health warnings and their perceived effectiveness among young people. The objective of our study was to evaluate the attention to and perceptions of a set of cigar-specific health warnings among young adult tobacco users and non-users. Methods: Young adults ages 18–24 in Columbus, Ohio, were recruited into an eye-tracking experiment examining cigarillo packaging between May 2022 and February 2023. Participants (n = 124) were shown 12 unique, branded cigarillo packages featuring a rotation of four of the Food and Drug Administration's mandated health warnings: (1) Cigar smoking can cause lung cancer and heart disease ("disease"); (2) tobacco smoke increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease, even in nonsmokers ("nonsmokers"); (3) cigar smoking can cause cancers of the mouth and throat, even if you do not inhale ("inhale"); and (4) cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes ("alternative"). Software captured visual attention to each product package, including the health warning. Participants also ranked the most effective message to motivate people to quit; one week later, the participants (n = 118) self-reported unaided recall of the experiment. Results: Study participants were an average of 21.2 years old, 54.2% were female, 73.7% were White, 65.3% had some college education, and 26.3% reported tobacco use in the previous month. The health warning, "Cigar smoking can cause cancers of the mouth and throat, even if you do not inhale" was ranked the most effective cigar warning (41.5%) and drew the greatest proportion of visual attention (26.1%). More than half (52.5%) recalled details regarding the health warning messages one week following the experiment, with few recalling (17.7%) specific warning message themes. Conclusions: Understanding the best performing health warnings is a crucial strategy to share accurate information on the risks of tobacco use. Our findings suggest that the warning on cancer risk even without inhaling drew the greatest visual attention and highest rating of perceived effectiveness among this sample of young adult cigarillo users and non-users.
