Abstract:Generalized games model interactions between a set of selfish decision makers, called players or agents, where both the objective function and the feasible decision set of each player may depend on strategies of the competitors. Such games arise, for example, when agents compete for a share of some common but limited resources. For instance, consider a set of vehicles sharing the road, set of radio channels competing for bandwidth, or set of companies servicing an economic market. They can each be modeled as players/agents in a game, competing for a portion of available resources, that is, road capacity, total bandwidth, or market share. As resources are limited, player choices are bound together by a coupling-capacity constraint. Essentially, in a generalized game, or one with coupling constraints, the set of available choices an agent has depends on the choices of other agents. Thus, a player cannot simply optimize their own objective function without considering the decisions of the others, even though this objective might not depend on him or her. The relevant equilibrium (namely, the solution concept) for noncooperative decision making with coupling constraints is called a generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE).

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework for analysis and design of distributed optimization problem in multi-agent systems by using the language of game theory and cooperative control methodology. In the framework, a piecewise-constant and binary-valued matrix in the cooperative control theory is introduced to describe the sensing/communication among agents and to cope with the practical situations where the information sharing may be in a distributed, dynamically changing and local manner. Based on information acquisition/communication model, state based ordinal potential game is designed to capture the optimal solution to distributed optimization problems in multi-agent systems by appropriately specifying local objective function for each individual decision maker. It is worth noting that the proposed analysis and design methodology has the advantages that the resulted equilibriums are capable of solving the distributed optimization problems even if the corresponding communication topologies is local, time-varying and intermittent. Meanwhile, the minimal requirement for the communication among the agents is provided to ensure the global objective is desirable under the new framework.

Abstract:This paper presents a new game theory based method to control multi-agent systems under directed and time varying interaction topology. First, the sensing/communication matrix is introduced to cope with information sharing among agents, and to provide the minimal information requirement which ensures the system level objective is desirable. Second, different from traditional methods of controlling multi-agent systems, non-cooperative games are investigated to enforce agents to make rational decisions. And a new game model, termed stochastic weakly acyclic game, is developed to capture the optimal solution to the distributed optimization problem for multi-agent systems with directed topology. It is worth noting that the system level objective can be achieved at the points of the corresponding equilibriums of the new game model. The proposed method is illustrated with an example in smart grid where multiple distributed generators are controlled to reach the fair power utilization profile in the game formulation to ensure the aggregated power output are optimal.

Abstract:In the context of the Energy Internet and the shared economy, it is necessary to develop appropriate planning and distributed solving methods to facilitate the application of shared energy storage among local integrated energy systems. This paper proposes a two-stage multiple cooperative games-based joint planning method for the local integrated energy systems coalition and shared energy storage provider. In the first stage, a joint planning model for the local integrated energy systems coalition and shared energy storage provider is established under the improved Nash bargaining framework, and a solving algorithm based on an improved alternating direction method is proposed to achieve distributed computation. In the second stage, a shared energy storage cost allocation model of the local integrated energy systems coalition is proposed under the improved Nucleolus method framework, and a solving algorithm based on the constraint generation technique is proposed to reduce the model computing time and realize rational shared energy storage cost allocation. Case studies on a shared energy storage provider and multiple local integrated energy systems are conducted to verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed model, and simulation results demonstrate that the total costs of the local integrated energy systems coalition are reduced, the profits of shared energy storage provider are increased, and the model computing time is reduced compared with other counterparts.

Abstract:We propose and analyze a broad family of games played by resource-constrained players, which are characterized by the following central features: 1) each user has a multi-dimensional action space, subject to a single sum resource constraint; 2) each user's utility in a particular dimension depends on an additive coupling between the user's action in the same dimension and the actions of the other users; and 3) each user's total utility is the sum of the utilities obtained in each dimension. Familiar examples of such multi-user environments in communication systems include power control over frequency-selective Gaussian interference channels and flow control in Jackson networks. In settings where users cannot exchange messages in real-time, we study how users can adjust their actions based on their local observations. We derive sufficient conditions under which a unique Nash equilibrium exists and the best-response algorithm converges globally and linearly to the Nash equilibrium. In settings where users can exchange messages in real-time, we focus on user choices that optimize the overall utility. We provide the convergence conditions of two distributed action update mechanisms, gradient play and Jacobi update.

Abstract:The emergence of energy hubs as integrated energy systems has been a recent development that has the potential to shape the future of the global energy landscape. This article delves into the issue of collaborative economic planning for multiple interconnected energy systems by utilizing the energy hub. In contrast to the conventional non-collaborative methodology of independent operation of each energy hub, the present approach entails the formation of an interdependent community of energy hubs that facilitates the exchange of energy resources. The issue of coordinated management, taking into account the autonomy and individual interests of distinct energy hubs, is conceptualized as a collaborative bargaining game. In this game, the energy hubs involved engage in negotiations with one another regarding the exchange of energy and the associated costs. The collaborative system's bargaining response is determined through the implementation of a distributed optimization approach. This is performed to ensure that the energy hubs' scheduling autonomy and confidentiality of information are maintained. The modeling of uncertainties in forecasting the output power of renewable energy resources and electric demand is a well-known challenge. This study employs the information gap decision-making theory to handle this challenge. Specifically, the study presents a robust bargaining game theory algorithm for energy hubs' optimum and robust operation. The simulation outcomes have ultimately verified the efficacy of the energy hub's collaborative economic planning algorithm that relies on bargaining for energy management, even in uncertainty.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the energy management problem for smart cyber-physical power systems with conventional utility companies, microgrids (MGs) and customers. We have adopted a game-theoretical approach to model the problem as a hierarchical game, which takes the interactions and interconnections among utility companies, MGs and customers into consideration. We have considered two completely different situations depending on whether utility companies can enforce their strategies upon MGs and customers, and have modelled the problem as a two-stage Stackelberg game and three-stage Stackelberg game, respectively. The backward induction method is used to analyse the proposed games and closed-form expressions are derived for optimum strategies. We prove that there exists a unique Nash equilibrium for each non-cooperative price competition game, and these Nash equilibria constitute the Stackelberg equilibrium. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the relationships among system parameters.

Abstract:Game theory-based approaches have recently gained traction in a wide range of applications, importantly in power and energy systems. With the onset of cooperation as a new perspective for solving power system problems, as well as the nature of power system problems, it is now necessary to seek appropriate game theory-based tools that permit the investigation and analysis of the behavior and relationships of various players in power system problems. In this context, this paper performs a literature review on coalitional game theory's most recent advancements and applications in power and energy systems. First, we provide a brief overview of the coalitional game theory's fundamental ideas, current theoretical advancements, and various solution concepts. Second, we examine the recent applications in power and energy systems. Finally, we explore the challenges, limitations, and future research possibilities with applications in power and energy systems in the hopes of furthering the literature by strengthening the applications of coalitional game theory in power and energy systems.

Energy Management for a User Interactive Smart Community: A Stackelberg Game Approach

Abstract:This paper studies a three party energy management problem in a user interactive smart community that consists of a large number of residential units (RUs) with distributed energy resources (DERs), a shared facility controller (SFC) and the main grid. A Stackelberg game is formulated to benefit both the SFC and RUs, in terms of incurred cost and achieved utility respectively, from their energy trading with each other and the grid. The properties of the game are studied and it is shown that there exists a unique Stackelberg equilibrium (SE). A novel algorithm is proposed that can be implemented in a distributed fashion by both RUs and the SFC to reach the SE. The convergence of the algorithm is also proven, and shown to always reach the SE. Numerical examples are used to assess the properties and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The energy transition requires rethinking how we produce and consume energy. Energy communities (EC) provide a recent legal framework for sharing energy, aiming to reduce energy bills and the environmental footprint of their participants. One of the challenges is adapting economic models to this technological upheaval. In this context, cooperative games, based on game theory, are valuable tools for modeling energy management through cooperation. However, despite their promising characteristics, cooperative games are limited by their computational complexity. The required computation time to solve cooperative games increases exponentially with the number of participants, restricting their application in energy management. This paper aims to propose a solution to apply cooperative game theory tools to larger communities using a multidisciplinary approach. For this purpose, a game subdivision approach based on the specific properties of energy communities is proposed. This methodology will be shown to be efficient in terms of computation time. While the game theory concepts are depreciated by limiting computing time, the sub-games method can become an interesting tool in energy management. Advantages and drawbacks in terms of energy management and game theory are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Valuation problems, such as feature interpretation, data valuation and model valuation for ensembles, become increasingly more important in many machine learning applications. Such problems are commonly solved by well-known game-theoretic criteria, such as Shapley value or Banzhaf value. In this work, we present a novel energy-based treatment for cooperative games, with a theoretical justification by the maximum entropy framework. Surprisingly, by conducting variational inference of the energy-based model, we recover various game-theoretic valuation criteria through conducting one-step fixed point iteration for maximizing the mean-field ELBO objective. This observation also verifies the rationality of existing criteria, as they are all attempting to decouple the correlations among the players through the mean-field approach. By running fixed point iteration for multiple steps, we achieve a trajectory of the valuations, among which we define the valuation with the best conceivable decoupling error as the Variational Index. We prove that under uniform initializations, these variational valuations all satisfy a set of game-theoretic axioms. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed Variational Index enjoys lower decoupling error and better valuation performance on certain synthetic and real-world valuation problems.

A Shared-Constraint Approach to Multi-leader Multi-follower Games

Abstract:Multi-leader multi-follower games are a class of hierarchical games in which a collection of leaders compete in a Nash game constrained by the equilibrium conditions of another Nash game amongst the followers. The resulting equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints is complicated by nonconvex agent problems and therefore providing tractable conditions for existence of global or even local equilibria for it has proved challenging. Consequently, much of the extant research on this topic is either model specific or relies on weaker notions of equilibria. We consider a modified formulation in which every leader is cognizant of the equilibrium constraints of all leaders. Equilibria of this modified game contain the equilibria, if any, of the original game. The new formulation has a constraint structure called shared constraints, and our main result shows that if the leader objectives admit a potential function, the global minimizers of the potential function over the shared constraint are equilibria of the modified formulation. We provide another existence result using fixed point theory that does not require potentiality. Additionally, local minima, B-stationary, and strong-stationary points of this minimization are shown to be local Nash equilibria, Nash B-stationary, and Nash strong-stationary points of the corresponding multi-leader multi-follower game. We demonstrate the relationship between variational equilibria associated with this modified shared-constraint game and equilibria of the original game from the standpoint of the multiplier sets and show how equilibria of the original formulation may be recovered. We note through several examples that such potential multi-leader multi-follower games capture a breadth of application problems of interest and demonstrate our findings on a multi-leader multi-follower Cournot game.

Abstract:The complex configuration and behavior of multisource hybrid energy systems (HESs) present challenges to their energy management. For a balanced solution, it is especially important to represent and take advantage of the characteristics of each device and the interactive relationship among them. In this paper, multi-agent modeling and a game theory-based control strategy are proposed and combined for the energy management of an example engine-generator/battery/ultracapacitor (UC) HES. The three devices such as engine-generator unit, battery and UC packs are modeled and controlled as independent but related agents, through which the performance and requirements of the individual devices are fully respected. The energy management problem is then formulated as a noncooperative current control (NCC) game. The Nash equilibrium is analytically derived as a balanced solution that compromises the different preferences of the independent devices. The following simulation and experimental results validate the game theory-based control and its real-time implementation. The proposed approach could be further extended to become a general solution for the energy management and control of networked energy systems, in which again fully representing and balancing the different preferences of the components are important.

Abstract:Engineering systems, characterized by their high technical complexity and societal intricacies, require a strategic design approach to navigate multifaceted challenges. Understanding the circumstances that affect strategic action in these systems is crucial for managing complex real-world challenges. These challenges go beyond localized coordination issues and encompass intricate dynamics, requiring a deep understanding of the underlying structures impacting strategic behaviors, the interactions between subsystems, and the conflicting needs and expectations of diverse actors. Traditional optimization and game-theoretic approaches to guide individual and collective decisions need adaptation to capture the complexities of these design ecosystems, particularly in the face of increasing numbers of decision-makers and various interconnections between them. This paper presents a framework for studying strategic decision-making processes in collective systems. It tackles the combinatorial complexity and interdependencies inherent in large-scale systems by representing strategic decision-making processes as binary normal-form games, then dissects and reinterprets them in terms of multiple compact games characterized by two real-numbered structural factors and classifies them across four strategy dynamical domains associated with different stability conditions. We provide a mathematical characterization and visual representation of emergent strategy dynamics in games with three or more actors intended to facilitate its implementation by researchers and practitioners and elicit new perspectives on design and management for optimizing systems-of-systems performance. We conclude this paper with a discussion of the opportunities and challenges of adopting this framework within and beyond the context of engineering systems.

Abstract:We study network games in which players choose both the partners with whom they associate and an action level (e.g., effort) that creates spillovers for those partners. We introduce a framework and two solution concepts, extending standard approaches for analyzing each choice in isolation: Nash equilibrium in actions and pairwise stability in links. Our main results show that, under suitable order conditions on incentives, stable networks take simple forms. The first condition concerns whether links create positive or negative payoff spillovers. The second concerns whether actions are strategic complements to links, or strategic substitutes. Together, these conditions yield a taxonomy of the relationship between network structure and economic primitives organized around two network architectures: ordered overlapping cliques and nested split graphs. We apply our model to understand the consequences of competition for status, to microfound matching models that assume clique formation, and to interpret empirical findings that highlight unintended consequences of group design.

Abstract:In coordination games and speculative over-the-counter financial markets, solutions depend on higher-order average expectations: agents' expectations about what counterparties, on average, expect their counterparties to think, etc. We offer a unified analysis of these objects and their limits, for general information structures, priors, and networks of counterparty relationships. Our key device is an interaction structure combining the network and agents' beliefs, which we analyze using Markov methods. This device allows us to nest classical beauty contests and network games within one model and unify their results. Two applications illustrate the techniques: The first characterizes when slight optimism about counterparties' average expectations leads to contagion of optimism and extreme asset prices. The second describes the tyranny of the least-informed: agents coordinating on the prior expectations of the one with the worst private information, despite all having nearly common certainty, based on precise private signals, of the ex post optimal action.

A Unifying System Theory Framework for Distributed Optimization and Games

Abstract:This paper introduces a systematic methodological framework to design and analyze distributed algorithms for optimization and games over networks. Starting from a centralized method, we identify an aggregation function involving all the decision variables (e.g., a global cost gradient or constraint) and introduce a distributed consensus-oriented scheme to asymptotically approximate the unavailable information at each agent. Then, we delineate the proper methodology for intertwining the identified building blocks, i.e., the optimization-oriented method and the consensus-oriented one. The key intuition is to interpret the obtained interconnection as a singularly perturbed system. We rely on this interpretation to provide sufficient conditions for the building blocks to be successfully connected into a distributed scheme exhibiting the convergence guarantees of the centralized algorithm. Finally, we show the potential of our approach by developing a new distributed scheme for constraint-coupled problems with a linear convergence rate.

Constrained multi-cluster game: Distributed Nash equilibrium seeking over directed graphs

Abstract:Motivated by the complex dynamics of cooperative and competitive interactions within networked agent systems, multi-cluster games provide a framework for modeling the interconnected goals of self-interested clusters of agents. For this setup, the existing literature lacks comprehensive gradient-based solutions that simultaneously consider constraint sets and directed communication networks, both of which are crucial for many practical applications. To address this gap, this paper proposes a distributed Nash equilibrium seeking algorithm that integrates consensus-based methods and gradient-tracking techniques, where inter-cluster and intra-cluster communications only use row- and column-stochastic weight matrices, respectively. To handle constraints, we introduce an averaging procedure, which can effectively address the complications associated with projections. In turn, we can show linear convergence of our algorithm, focusing on the contraction property of the optimality gap. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm through a microgrid energy management application.

Abstract:This paper studies an <i>n</i>-player non-cooperative game where each player has expected-value payoff function and chance-constrained strategy set. We consider the case where the row vectors defining the constraints are independent random vectors whose probability distributions are not completely known and belong to a certain distributional uncertainty set. The chance-constrained strategy sets are defined using a distributionally robust framework. We consider one density based uncertainty set and four two-moments based uncertainty sets. One of the considered uncertainty sets is based on a nonnegative support. Under the standard assumptions on the players' payoff functions, we show that there exists a Nash equilibrium of a distributionally robust chance-constrained game for each uncertainty set. As an application, we study Cournot competition in electricity market and perform the numerical experiments for the case of two electricity firms.

Abstract:Nash equilibrium, as an essential strategic profile in game theory, is of both practical relevance and theoretical significance due to its wide penetration into various fields, such as smart grids, wireless communication networks, and networked mobile vehicles. In particular, distributed Nash equilibrium seeking strategies have recently attracted increasing attention because they show remarkable advantages in relaxing the requirement of a central node for information broadcasting or full observation of players' actions. This article aims to provide a survey of distributed Nash equilibrium seeking in games with partial decision information, in which players can only exchange information with their neighbors and their objective functions may explicitly depend on all players' actions. First, fundamental problem descriptions on distributed Nash equilibrium seeking are presented. Second, related results on distributed Nash equilibrium seeking in general multiplayer games, aggregative games, and multicluster games are reviewed, respectively, where representative continuous- and discrete-time methods are explained in detail. Third, two practical applications, including collaborative control for a network of mobile sensors and energy consumption control in smart grids, are provided to demonstrate the applicability of distributed Nash equilibrium seeking strategies. Finally, some promising directions are suggested for future research.
