Abstract:We reported the timing jitter reduction of an 882 MHz mode-locked NPE Yb:fiber lasers through active relative intensity noise suppression. The timing jitter spectra measurements based on balanced optical cross-correlation (BOC) technique show a reduction of ~10 dB in the Fourier frequency range from ~3 kHz to ~30 kHz with a unity-gain crossing point of 80 kHz. The results verify the theoretical prediction that the relative intensity noise (RIN) induced timing jitter by self-steepening effect dominates the jitter performance below ~100 kHz. Further comparison with the analytic model shows that the effect of RIN decays below ~3 kHz. Thus, the timing jitter reduction is not obvious at low frequency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental report on the timing jitter reduction through active RIN suppression in high-repetition-rate mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:An all-optical frequency and intensity noise suppression technique of a single-frequency fiber laser is demonstrated. By exploiting the recursive noise reduction effect of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in a self-injection locked fiber laser, the frequency and intensity noise of the laser are remarkably suppressed in a significantly wide frequency range. In addition to the linewidth suppression from 3.5 kHz to 700 Hz, the frequency noise has been reduced by ∼25 dB. After suppression, the relative intensity noise (RIN) is within 5 dB of the shot noise limit at frequencies from 1.5 to 3 MHz, and the frequency range of the suppression reaches about 30 MHz. The relaxation oscillation peak is observed to shift to lower frequencies and is reduced by about 35 dB from -90 dB/Hz to -125 dB/Hz. It is believed that the achieved low noise makes the fiber laser a promising candidate in applications such as ultra-long haul coherent optical communication and LIDAR.

Abstract:We show that an optimum mode-locking state with low relative intensity noise (RIN) can be identified by continuous broadening of an optical spectrum in a stretched-pulse fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Under the premise of keeping the overall spectral shape unchanged, either gradually increasing the pump power or unidirectionally adjusting the polarization controller (PC) can effectively reduce RIN as the optical spectral bandwidth broadens. The optimized intensity noise performance of the laser can be attributed to the increased pulse energy and reduced intra-cavity net dispersion. Moreover, the integrated RIN will further decrease as the maximum 3-dB bandwidth extends. In our experiment, the detected minimum integrated rms RIN is below 0.003% (from 100 Hz to 100 kHz). Our experimental results find that the absolute spectral width is not a necessary key condition for obtaining low RIN mode-locked laser, whereas it may help understand and design versatile low-noise ultrafast laser sources.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a stable and low-noise all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked via nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in a linear cavity with dual outputs. A detailed design strategy is presented. The all-PM configuration enhances the capability of resistance to environmental fluctuations. Self-starting mode-locking is realized by using a non-reciprocal phase shifter. The dual-output structure offers the intracavity filtering effect, where the reflective port serves as a bandpass spectral filter, significantly improving the transmissive-port optical properties. The laser directly generates ultrashort pulses with a pulse duration of 129 fs operating at a fundamental repetition rate of 105.8 MHz. The integrated root-mean-square (RMS) relative intensity noise from 10 Hz to 10 MHz is similar to 0.008%, and the integrated RMS timing jitter from 5 kHz to 10 MHz is similar to 36 fs. Long-term stability is confirmed in 25 h with a RMS power fluctuation of similar to 0.10%. Our high-performance fiber laser is a prospective candidate for low-noise applications. Abstract:Raman dissipative soliton is generated in a mode locked polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Ultrafast Raman laser with a repetition rate of 1.23 MHz is obtained. Signal to noise ratio of the radio frequency spectrum of the Raman dissipative soliton is as high as 85 dB. As the pump power increasing, the pulse energy and the spectral width increase, while the pulse width decreases. The highest pulse energy and lowest pulse width is 1.23 nJ and 63 ps, respectively. It is the first report of Raman dissipative soliton generation from an all polarization maintaining mode locked fiber laser to the best of our knowledge. This configuration provides a method to obtain linearly-polarized ultrafast laser at flexible wavelengths.

Abstract:We have designed a unique intracavity semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) structure to suppress the relative intensity noise (RIN) for a fiber DFB laser. By exploiting the gain saturation effect of the SOA, a maximum noise suppression of 30 dB around the relaxation oscillation frequency is achieved, and the whole resonance relaxation oscillation peak completely disappears. Moreover, via a specially designed intracavity SOA structure, the optical intensity inside the SOA will be in a balanced state via the oscillation in the laser cavity, and the frequency noise of the laser will not be degraded with the SOA.

Abstract:We report a fiber laser noise reduction method by locking it to an actively stabilized optical delay line, specifically a fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a 10 km optical fiber spool. The fiber spool is used to achieve large arm imbalance. The heterodyne signal of the two arms converts the laser noise from the optical domain to several megahertz, and it is used in laser noise reduction by a phase-locked loop. An additional phase-locked loop is induced in the system to compensate the phase noise due to environmentally induced length fluctuations of the optical fiber spool. A major advantage of this structure is the efficient reduction of out-of-loop frequency noise, particularly at low Fourier frequency. The frequency noise reaches -30 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz, which is reduced by more than 90 dB compared with that of the laser in its free-running state.

Abstract:Laser intensity noise suppression has essential effects on preparation and characterization of the audio-frequency squeezed vacuum state of light based on a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO). We have implemented two feedback loops by using relevant acousto-optical modulators (AOM) to stabilize the intensity of 795-nm near infrared (NIR) fundamental laser and 397.5-nm ultraviolet (UV) laser generated by cavity-enhanced frequency doubling. Typical peak-to-peak laser intensity fluctuation with a bandwidth of ~10 kHz in a half hour has been improved from ±7.45% to ±0.06% for 795-nm NIR laser beam, and from ±9.04% to ±0.05% for 397.5-nm UV laser beam, respectively. The squeezing level of the squeezed vacuum state at 795 nm prepared by the sub-threshold OPO with a PPKTP crystal has been improved from −3.3 to −4.0 dB around 3~9 kHz of analysis frequency range.

Abstract:We report an Er-doped fiber laser based on a hybrid mode-locked mechanism, which include a graded-index multimode fiber as a saturable absorber (SA) and nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). By adopting two distinct mechanisms simultaneously, the laser can output shorter pulses with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low noise jitter. At a pump power of 110 mW, a mode-locked pulse train with a pulse duration of 1.8 ps and a repetition rate of 49.80 MHz is generated. Compared with the implementation of the NPR mode-locked mechanism alone, the implementation of the hybrid mode-locked mechanism increased the SNR of the laser from 44 dB to 70 dB. The standard deviation of the average power fluctuation is 1.53%. Besides, a stable harmonic mode-locked pulse train can be obtained and switched by merely adjusting the pump power.

Abstract:We report on environmentally stable long-cavity ultrashort erbium-doped fiber lasers, which self-start mode-locking at quite low thresholds by using spectrally filtered and phase-biased nonlinear amplifying long-loop mirrors. By employing 100-m polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) in the nonlinear loop, the fundamental repetition rate reaches 1.84 MHz and no practical limitation is found to further decrease the repetition rate. The filter used in the long loop not only suppresses Kelly sidebands of the solitons, but also eliminates the amplified spontaneous emission which exists widely in low-repetition-rate ultrafast fiber lasers. The bandwidth of the filter is optimized by using a numerical model. The laser emits approximately 3-ps pulses with an energy of 17.4 pJ, which is further boosted to $1.5~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{J}$ by using a fiber amplifier.

Abstract:Low noise laser sources with narrow linewidth and low intensity noise are key tools in a broad range of applications such as optical sense, microwave photonics, coherent optical communications and so on. The report gives an introduction about our research progress of the narrow-linewidth single frequency DFB fiber lasers. An internally developed DFB fiber laser is developed. The noise characteristic of laser output is studied in detail. The frequency noise in low Fourier frequency is reduced via using the low noise pump and intracavity optical negative feedback. Furthermore, an injecting lock scheme is used to reduce the intensity noise. A fiber laser output with low frequency noise and low intensity noise has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Microcavity lasers have received widespread attention because of their miniaturization and low threshold characteristics. Based on the theoretical analysis of modified semiclassical Langevin equations and the dynamic response of a microcavity Raman laser under constant injection of external feedback light, optical feedback technology is proposed as an effective method for suppressing the relaxation oscillation noise of microcavity lasers. By controlling the optical feedback level, an overall suppression on the laser intensity spectrum around the relaxation oscillation frequency by approximately 24 dB is implemented experimentally. The phase portrait merging feature and the relaxation linewidth narrowing of the microcavity laser is also observed. The theoretical predictions, confirmed by numerical resolutions, are in good agreement with the experimental results. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to study the optical feedback effect in the miniaturized microcavity lasers. The all-optical technique offers a simple and effective method for relaxation oscillation noise reduction in microcavity lasers without active control system. From the applied point of view, since the relaxation oscillation, and consequently the intensity noise of the microcavity laser can be modified by applying the optical feedback, it opens up new perspectives for ultrasensitive detection in a low noise microcavity-based laser system.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a narrow linewidth, low frequency noise Er-doped fiber ring laser with resonant feedback in a femtosecond laser induced random medium of deep refractive index modulation in three dimensions. Eight concatenated single-mode fiber segments about 1 cm long, each carry a total of 8 × 500 randomly spaced laser-written-planes. Numerous low-finesse spectral filters are formed to significantly suppress sub-cavity modes, ensuring single-mode operation within a wavelength-locking range. The linewidth of the laser is 2.1 kHz with 58 dB side-mode-suppression-ratio. The frequency noise is ∼1 Hz/Hz1/2 above 1 kHz, and the frequency jitter is ∼1.8 × 10−12 over 100 s.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers based on a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) have attracted much attention due to their ability to generate short pulses with wide spectra and high peak power. However, environmental perturbations can easily cause the lasers to lose the mode-locked state and make it a challenge for practical application. The aim of this research is to improve the laser stability by inserting a Lyot filter into the mode-locked laser cavity. The experimental results indicate that the mode-locked state can be maintained when the radius of the fiber loop is changed from 7.5 to 1.5 cm, while the signal-to-noise ratio of the fundamental frequency remains almost the same. The tunability of the output power can be achieved by adding a half-wave plate (HWP) in the laser cavity without changing the pump power, while the mode-locked state remains stable. By adjusting the angle of the HWP2, the output power can be adjusted from 3.36 to 66.5 mW at repetition rate of 29.7 MHz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a GHz repetition rate mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser with low noise. Based on a home-made Tm3+-doped barium gallo-germanate fiber with reduced dispersion, a broad optical spectrum of mode-locking is achieved, and its amplified spontaneous emission quantum-limited timing jitter is largely suppressed. Besides, we carefully investigate the influence of the intracavity pump strength on the noise performance of the mode-locked pulses and find that manipulating the intracavity pump power can be an effective method for optimizing the timing jitter and relative intensity noise (RIN). Particularly, RIN, which originated from the relaxation oscillation, can be effectively suppressed by 33 dB at offset frequencies of >1 MHz. The integrated timing jitter and RIN are only 7.9 fs (10 kHz-10 MHz) and 0.05% (10 Hz-10 MHz), respectively.
Narrow-linewidth Single-Polarization Fiber Laser Using Non-Polarization Optics.

Abstract:Single longitudinal mode and single polarization are basic requirements of high performance fiber lasers, while their realizations are nontrivial, owing to the long laser cavity and lack of polarization selection of ordinary optical fibers. Here, we demonstrate an all-fiber narrow-linewidth laser realized on an external high-Q fiber ring, with combined functions of single-longitude-mode selection and linewidth reduction. A single-longitude-mode laser with a high polarization extinction ratio of ∼40dB and low white frequency noise at 0.3Hz2/Hz is achieved, corresponding to a fundamental linewidth of ∼0.92Hz. Using all non-polarization fiber components and ordinary gain fiber, our scheme shows the realization of narrow-linewidth single-polarization fiber lasers in a simple and cost-effective way, promising for broadband applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a feedback tunable self-injection locked (SIL) narrow linewidth laser, the feedback light intensity is dynamically adjusted to find the best locking state. The self-injection locked laser is composed of distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser and high quality (Q) factor silicon nitride (SiN) external cavity, tunable sagnac loop reflector is used to achieve arbitrary ratio of feedback light and output light on the basis of add-drop type high Q microring resonator (MRR). The results show that the SIL state is closely related to the ratio of feedback light. When the optical feedback ratio is higher than -14 dB, a robust SIL state can be achieved, and the locking state is independent of the phase of the feedback light, the intrinsic linewidth is narrowed from 130 kHz to 1 kHz. By optimizing the ratio of feedback light to -9.3 dB, a narrow linewidth output of 345 Hz can be achieved. This work has important application value in the field of coherent laser communication and coherent detection.
