Abstract:Closed-form expressions for the distributions of the order statistics on the spacings between order statistics for the uniform distribution are obtained. This generalizes a result by Fisher concerning tests of significance in the harmonic analysis of a series.

Abstract:Theoretical expressions for the distribution of the ratio of consecutive level spacings for quantum systems with transiting dynamics remain unknown. We propose a family of one-parameter distributions $P(r)\equiv P(r;\beta)$, where $\beta\in[0,+\infty)$ is a generalized Dyson index, that describes the eigenlevel statistics of a quantum system characterized by different symmetries and degrees of chaos. We show that this crossover strongly depends on the specific properties of each model, and thus the reduction of such a family to a universal formula, albeit desirable, is not possible. We use the information entropy as a criterion to suggest particular ansatzs for different transitions, with a negligible associated error in the limits corresponding to standard random ensembles.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of local level spacings and study their statistics within a random-matrix-theory approach. In the limit of infinite-dimensional random matrices, we determine universal sequences of mean local spacings and of their ratios which uniquely identify the global symmetries of a quantum system and its internal -- chaotic or regular -- dynamics. These findings, which offer a new framework to monitor single- and many-body quantum systems, are corroborated by numerical experiments performed for zeros of the Riemann zeta function, spectra of irrational rectangular billiards and many-body spectra of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Hamiltonians.

Abstract:A variety of statistics based on sample spacings has been studied in the literature for testing goodness-of-fit to parametric distributions. To test the goodness-of-fit to a nonparametric class of univariate shape-constrained densities, including widely studied classes such as k-monotone and log-concave densities, a likelihood ratio test with a working alternative density estimate based on the spacings of the observations is considered, and is shown to be asymptotically normal and distribution-free under the null, consistent under fixed alternatives, and admits bootstrap calibration. The distribution-freeness under the null comes from the fact that the asymptotic dominant term depends only on a function of the spacings of transformed outcomes that are uniformly distributed. Applications and extensions of theoretical results in the literature of shape-constrained estimation are required to show that the average log-density ratio converges to zero at a faster rate than the sample spacing term under the null, and diverges under the alternatives. Numerical studies are conducted to demonstrate that the test is applicable to various classes of shape-constrained densities and has a good balance between type-I error control under the null and power under alternative distributions.

Abstract:We study the variance in the number of points contained within a window $\Omega$ of arbitrary size, and to further illuminate our understanding of {\it hyperuniform} systems, i.e., point patterns that do not possess long-wavelength fluctuations. For large windows, hyperuniform systems are characterized by a local variance that grows only as the surface area (rather than the volume) of the window. We show that a homogeneous point pattern in a hyperuniform state is at a ``critical-point'' of a type with appropriate scaling laws and critical exponents, but one in which the {\it direct correlation function} (rather than the pair correlation function) is long-ranged.variance.We prove that the simple periodic linear array yields the global minimum value of the average variance among all infinite one-dimensional hyperuniform patterns. We also evaluate the variance for common infinite periodic lattices as well as certain nonperiodic point patterns in one, two, and three dimensions for spherical windows.Our results suggest that the local variance may serve as a useful order metric for general point patterns. Contrary to the conjecture that the lattices associated with the densest packing of congruent spheres have the smallest variance regardless of the space dimension, we show that for $d=3$, the body-centered cubic lattice has a smaller variance than the face-centered cubic lattice. Finally, for certain hyperuniform disordered point patterns, we evaluate the direct correlation function, structure factor, and associated critical exponents exactly.

Abstract:In recent studies of many-body localization in nonintegrable quantum systems, the distribution of the ratio of two consecutive energy level spacings, $r_n=(E_{n+1}-E_n)/(E_{n}-E_{n-1})$ or $\tilde{r}_n=\min(r_n,r_n^{-1})$, has been used as a measure to quantify the chaoticity, alternative to the more conventional distribution of the level spacings, $s_n=\bar{\rho}(E_n)(E_{n+1}-E_n)$, as the former makes unnecessary the unfolding required for the latter. Based on our previous work on the Tracy-Widom approach to the Janossy densities, we present analytic expressions for the joint probability distribution of two consecutive eigenvalue spacings and the distribution of their ratio for the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) of random Hermitian $N\times N$ matrices at $N\to \infty$, in terms of a system of differential equations. As a showcase of the efficacy of our results for characterizing an approach to quantum chaoticity, we contrast them to arguably the most ideal of all quantum-chaotic spectra: the zeroes of the Riemann $\zeta$ function on the critical line at increasing heights.

Abstract:We show that the distribution of bulk spacings between pairs of adjacent eigenvalue real parts of a random matrix drawn from the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble is asymptotically given by a generalization of the Gaudin-Mehta distribution, in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. The same generalization is expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlevé function and it is shown that the generalized Gaudin-Mehta distribution describes the crossover, with increasing degree of non-Hermiticity, from Gaudin-Mehta nearest-neighbor bulk statistics in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to Poisson gap statistics for eigenvalue real parts in the bulk of the Complex Ginibre Ensemble.

Abstract:We consider one-dimensional discrete-time random walks (RWs) of $n$ steps, starting from $x_0=0$, with arbitrary symmetric and continuous jump distributions $f(\eta)$, including the important case of L\'evy flights. We study the statistics of the gaps $\Delta_{k,n}$ between the $k^\text{th}$ and $(k+1)^\text{th}$ maximum of the set of positions $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$. We obtain an exact analytical expression for the probability distribution $P_{k,n}(\Delta)$ valid for any $k$ and $n$, and jump distribution $f(\eta)$, which we then analyse in the large $n$ limit. For jump distributions whose Fourier transform behaves, for small $q$, as $\hat f (q) \sim 1 - |q|^\mu$ with a L\'evy index $0< \mu \leq 2$, we find that, the distribution becomes stationary in the limit of $n\to \infty$, i.e. $\lim_{n\to \infty} P_{k,n}(\Delta)=P_k(\Delta)$. We obtain an explicit expression for its first moment $\mathbb{E}[\Delta_{k}]$, valid for any $k$ and jump distribution $f(\eta)$ with $\mu>1$, and show that it exhibits a universal algebraic decay $ \mathbb{E}[\Delta_{k}]\sim k^{1/\mu-1} \Gamma\left(1-1/\mu\right)/\pi$ for large $k$. Furthermore, for $\mu>1$, we show that in the limit of $k\to\infty$ the stationary distribution exhibits a universal scaling form $P_k(\Delta) \sim k^{1-1/\mu} \mathcal{P}_\mu(k^{1-1/\mu}\Delta)$ which depends only on the L\'evy index $\mu$, but not on the details of the jump distribution. We compute explicitly the limiting scaling function $\mathcal{P}_\mu(x)$ in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions. For $1< \mu <2$, we show that, while this scaling function captures the distribution of the typical gaps on the scale $k^{1/\mu-1}$, the atypical large gaps are not described by this scaling function since they occur at a larger scale of order $k^{1/\mu}$.

Abstract:We introduce a comprehensive method for establishing stochastic orders among order statistics in the i.i.d. case. This approach relies on the assumption that the underlying distribution is linked to a reference distribution through a transform order. Notably, this method exhibits broad applicability, particularly since several well-known nonparametric distribution families can be defined using relevant transform orders, including the convex and the star transform orders. In the context of convex-ordered families, we demonstrate that applying Jensen's inequality enables the derivation of bounds for the probability that a random variable exceeds the expected value of its corresponding order statistic.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for a Poisson binomial random variable to be stochastically larger (or smaller) than a binomial random variable. It is then used to deal with the stochastic comparisons of order statistics from heterogeneous populations with those from a homogeneous population. The result has obvious applications in the stochastic comparisons of lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems having independent components.

Abstract:This paper examines the distribution of order statistics taken from simple-random-sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) from a finite population with values 1,...,N. This distribution is a shifted version of the beta-binomial distribution, parameterised in a particular way. We derive the distribution and show how it relates to the distribution of order statistics under IID sampling from a uniform distribution over the unit interval. We examine properties of the distribution, including moments and asymptotic results. We also generalise the distribution to sampling without replacement of order statistics from an arbitrary finite population. We examine the properties of the order statistics for inference about an unknown population size (called the German tank problem) and we derive relevant estimation results based on observation of an arbitrary set of order statistics. We also introduce an algorithm that simulates sampling without replacement of order statistics from an arbitrary finite population without having to generate the entire sample.

Asymmetric statistics of order books: The role of discreteness and evidence for strategic order placement

Abstract:We show that the statistics of spreads in real order books is characterized by an intrinsic asymmetry due to discreteness effects for even or odd values of the spread. An analysis of data from the NYSE order book points out that traders' strategies contribute to this asymmetry. We also investigate this phenomenon in the framework of a microscopic model and, by introducing a non-uniform deposition mechanism for limit orders, we are able to quantitatively reproduce the asymmetry found in the experimental data. Simulations of our model also show a realistic dynamics with a sort of intermittent behavior characterized by long periods in which the order book is compact and liquid interrupted by volatile configurations. The order placement strategies produce a non-trivial behavior of the spread relaxation dynamics which is similar to the one observed in real markets.

Abstract:Generalized order statistics (GOSs) are often adopted as a tool for providing a unified approach to several stochastic models dealing with ordered random variables. In this contribution, we first recall various useful results based on the notion of total positivity. Then, some stochastic comparisons between spacings of GOSs from one sample, as well as two samples, are developed under the more general assumptions on the parameters of the model. Specifically, the given results deal with the likelihood ratio order, the hazard rate order and the mean residual life order. Finally, an application is demonstrated for sequential systems.
