Abstract:From early descriptions of cinema as 'living picture' to the 'crystal-images' evoked by Gilles Deleuze, the conceptualization of filmic media has left behind an impressive scaffold of organic metaphors and biological analogies. Although a mechanistic image of cinematic modernity prevailed in academia for many decades, we know now from the work of scholars such as Hannah Landecker, Antonio Somaini and Inga Pollmann that early and classical film theory were steeped in, and frequently interacted with, scientific and cultural discourses of life, natural environments, biological formation, and evolution.<a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-fn js-xref-fn" href=""><sup>1</sup></a> In recent years, new critical approaches informed by philosophical vitalism and post-humanist materialisms have tended to dissolve the specificity of cinema, as a theoretical and historical object, within a greater ecology of animated media, while breaking down epistemological distinctions between subject and object, the vital and the technical, the human and the nonhuman, in a plasmatic sea of animacy. Opting both for more disciplinary specificity and a variety of methodological perspectives, this dossier will rearticulate moving images' involvement with nature in terms of aesthetic mediation – by which we hope to designate a historically determined range of formal structures and sensible environments, neither fixed nor arbitrary, that condition how moving-image work can be created and experienced.

Abstract:This article casts light on the origins of infant psychiatry by taking a new, interdisciplinary approach to the work of psychoanalyst and film-maker René Spitz. Focusing on his observations of babies living in orphanages, it argues that by undertaking the difficult, and sometimes paradoxical, task of capturing emotional absence and psychological fragmentation on film, Spitz created a new and influential theory of the infant psyche. It considers how this vision of an indeterminate and potentially ‘empty’ infant subject was generated by the institutional care which he sought to undermine. The particular ways in which the institution emerges as a problem and opportunity for child analysts after World War II propelled Spitz into a surprising range of post-war debates on cultural politics. He is revealed as embedded in a complex, interdisciplinary web of discourse, practices and observational strategies, and at the centre of post-war visual research into the environmental origins of mental illness.

Abstract:The immense amount of research on benzodiazepines resulted in the synthesis of heterocycle-fused diazepine derivatives with potential pharmacological activity. Pyridoazepines are recognized to be active in the central nervous system and have a comparable activity to the well-known benzodiazepines. This makes the synthesis and the study of pyridodiazepines an important research topic. This review comprises of the synthesis and activity of pyridodiazepines, pyridooxazepines and pyridothiazepines. Although these structures have a great similarity with benzodiazepines, much less work has been published on their synthesis or derivatization. Therefore, there is a need to further develop these classes of underexplored scaffolds, in search for new chemistry, new methodology and hence new biological features.

Abstract:The cinema as a cultural institution has been studied by academic researchers in the arts and humanities. At present, cultural media studies are the home to the aesthetics and critical analysis of film, film history and other branches of film scholarship. Probably less known to most is that research psychologists working in social and life science labs have also contributed to the study of the medium. They have examined the particular experience that motion pictures provide to the film audience and the mechanisms that explain the perception and comprehension of film, and how movies move viewers and to what effects. This article reviews achievements in psychological research of the film since its earliest beginnings in the 1910s. A leading issue in the research has been whether understanding films is a bottom-up process, or a top-down one. A bottom-up explanation likens film-viewing to highly automated detection of stimulus features physically given in the supply of images; a top-down one to the construction of scenes from very incomplete information using mental schemata. Early film psychologists tried to pinpoint critical features of simple visual stimuli responsible for the perception of smooth movement. The riddle of apparent motion has not yet been solved up to now. Gestalt psychologists were the first to point at the role of mental structures in seeing smooth movement, using simple visual forms and displays. Bottom-up and top-down approaches to the comprehension of film fought for priority from the 60s onwards and became integrated at the end of the century. Gibson’s concept of direct perception led to the identification of low-level film-stylistic cues that are used in mainstream film production, and support film viewers in highly automated seamless perception of film scenes. Hochberg’s argument for the indispensability of mental schemata, too, accounted for the smooth cognitive construction of portrayed action and scenes. Since the 90s, cognitive analyses of narration in film by film scholars from the humanities have revolutionised accounts of the comprehension of movies. They informed computational content analyses that link low-level film features with meaningful units of film-story-telling. After a century of research, some perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that support our interaction with events in the real world have been uncovered. Today, the film experience at large has reappeared on the agenda. An integration of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms is sought in explaining the remarkable intensity of the film experience. Advances are now being made in grasping what it is like to enjoy movies, by describing the absorbing and moving qualities of the experience. As an example, a current account of film viewers' emotional experience is presented. Further advances in our understanding of the film experience and its underlying mechanisms can be expected if film psychologists team up with cognitive film studies, computer vision and the neurosciences. This collaboration is also expected to allow for research into mainstream and other genres as forms of art.

Abstract:Hitchcock’s fantasy about directly entering people’s brains seemed very futuristic and absurd in the fifties when he expressed these words to his scriptwriter Ernest Lehman. However, a few decades later, scientific and cinematographic technology has improved to such an extent that Hitchcock’s joke seems to be not so far-fetched anymore. In Douglas Trumbull’s Brainstorm (1983) and Katherine Bigelow’s film Strange Days (1995) direct recording and playing of brainwaves is possible. Of course these films belong to the genre of science fiction, and the actual possibilities of such techniques are not as refined as they portray. But I am not interested in the exact state of affairs that might be represented in these films. Rather, I am challenged by the implications for the relationship between human beings (subjects), images and the world — and for the underlying image of thought that Hitchcock’s words express, both in respect of his own work, and in respect of developments in contemporary cinema and contemporary audiovisual culture. What if we do not consider Hitchcock’s words as merely a never-to-be-fulfilled fantasy of having effects on people without representations, bypassing the eyes of the spectators and reaching them directly via the brain, as the psychoanalytic model of thought does? What if we consider him to be a visionary, anticipating contemporary scientific and cinematographic preoccupations, as would a rhizomatic model of thinking, according to which the brain is literally the screen?

Abstract:Cinema has always addressed human issues from diverse perspectives. It covered biographies, philosophy, history, war, and sci-fi. These disciplines promote economic and artistic success. Since the 1930s, cinema has explored sexual transformation. These films have defended homosexuals, explored how homosexuality causes AIDS, and discussed transgenderism for decades. As widely recognised, animated films for adults and children worldwide have included this trend. This study will demonstrate how hormone imbalance affects sexual function. This study, "Promoting Physiological Transformations in Cinema," comprises four chapters: The first chapter (methodological framework) covers the study problem, "What are the foundations and necessities of physiological transformation processes in cinema?" Thus, the importance, need, goal, and limitations of the study Physiology: origin and concept, psychology's role in physiological transformation, and the Danish Girl's advocacy for physiological transformation were included in the second chapter (theoretical framework and prior investigations). The third chapter included results, conclusions, recommendations, suggestions, and references.

Abstract:This article examines different forms of intermedial relations between x‐ray imaging and cinematography in the media culture around 1900, mainly in a Swedish context. With the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897 as one of the focal points, the author argues that these two media were linked in their production, distribution and exhibition as well as in the envisioned audience reception. More specifically, the aim is to show how collaboration and competition between these new media can be understood in relation to nineteenth‐century discourses on ‘modern magic’. Through the marketing in other media – illustrated books, articles, caricatures and advertising in the press – an expectation was fostered that the x‐ray apparatus and the Cinématographe could perform operations that once had been thought of as impossible or magical. In a similar manner, the media industries, scientific performers and entrepreneurial showmen launched x‐ray imaging and cinematography as something new, strange and even exotic. In the end it was the cinema that proved to be more successful in inventing new ‘magical’ tricks, and x‐rays were appropriated for other, medical services, but through innovative uses, the moving x‐ray pictures could once again become new and fascinating.

Abstract:Valpha24+ NKT is an innate lymphocyte with potential antitumor activity. Clinical applications of Valpha24+ natural killer (NK) T cells, which are innate lymphocytes with potential antitumor activity, require their in vitro expansion. To avoid the potential dangers posed to patients by fetal bovine serum (FBS), the authors evaluated non-FBS culture conditions for the selective and efficient expansion of human Valpha24+ NKT cells. Mononuclear cells (MNCs) and plasma from the peripheral blood of normal healthy donors were used before and after G-CSF mobilization. MNCs and plasma separated from apheresis products were also used. MNCs were cultured for 12 days in AIM-V medium containing alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer) (100 ng/mL) and IL-2 (100 U/mL) supplemented with FBS, autologous plasma, or autologous serum. The cultured cells were collected and their surface markers, intracellular cytokines, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The highest expansion ratio for Valpha24+ NKT cells was obtained from G-CSF-mobilized MNCs cultured in medium containing 5% autologous plasma. Cultures containing MNCs and autologous plasma obtained before and after G-CSF mobilization had approximately 350-fold and 2,000-fold expansion ratios, respectively. These results suggest that G-CSF mobilization conferred a proliferative advantage to Valpha24+ NKT cells by modifying the biology of cells and plasma factors. Expanded Valpha24+ NKT cells retained their surface antigen expression and production of IFN-gamma and exhibited CD1d-independent cytotoxicity against tumor cells. Valpha24+ NKT cells can be efficiently expanded from G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood MNCs in non-FBS culture conditions with alpha-GalCer and IL-2.

Abstract:This article considers film as a form of artificial intelligence (AI). This non-anthropocentric hypothesis was first formulated in 1946 by filmmaker and theorist Jean Epstein and regards film as the thinking performance of a technical apparatus, the cinematograph, which is a manifestation of machine thinking based on the holistic entanglement of thought and world, film and philosophy. The article pursues an enquiry into ‘thinking’: one of the most prominent and oldest topics considered in philosophy, and also essential to art and film. Thinking is not only characterised as a sense (like sight or taste) but as a creative and, ultimately, intra-active act. The possibility of film as AI is approached not only from a Deleuzian angle, long appraised by film-philosophy, but also through questions recently raised by theories of artistic research and the speculative-materialist turn in contemporary philosophy. The latter have as a common denominator a strong critique of anthropocentrism in Western philosophy; the article enquires into this criticism from different angles and applies it to the main hypothesis of this analysis – to regard film as a form of AI.

Abstract:Administration of ethionine to female rats caused a rapid and severe decline in liver ATP and inhibited hepatic protein synthesis in association with hypophosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) and 70-kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K1), two key regulatory proteins involved in initiation of mRNA translation. Phosphorylation of both regulatory proteins is mediated through a signaling pathway that involves the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Recent studies indicate that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a role in the cellular response to environmental stresses, which deplete ATP, and suppresses protein synthesis through downregulated mTOR signaling. We investigated the possible involvement of AMPK in the ethionine-induced inhibition of protein synthesis. The administration of ethionine surprisingly decreased AMPK activity compared with controls despite ATP depletion. We conclude that inhibition of protein synthesis by ethionine is due to AMPK-independent inhibition of mTOR signaling following ATP depletion.

Abstract:Our film Dreams and Dilemmas: Parents and the Practice of Neonatal Care is on its way to meeting its goal of furthering the "Principles for Family Centered Neonatal Care" (Harrison H. Pediatrics 1993;92:643-50) through cinéma vérité depiction of parental involvement in decision-making. Reality-based filmmaking can provide valuable and successful educational material that advances care and understanding. However, there are real practical and ethical concerns such as privacy, consent, and uncertain or unknown future impact on participants. Successful reality-based filmmaking in a complex medical environment such as a neonatal intensive care unit requires careful attention to ways of ensuring full communication between all those involved and efforts to allay participants' anxiety about being portrayed unfavorably. The most important ingredient, however, is the skill and ability of the filmmaker to engender trust.
'A machine for recreating life': an introduction to reproduction on film

Abstract:Reproduction is one of the most persistently generative themes in the history of science and cinema. Cabbage fairies, clones and monstrous creations have fascinated filmmakers and audiences for more than a century. Today we have grown accustomed not only to the once controversial portrayals of sperm, eggs and embryos in biology and medicine, but also to the artificial wombs and dystopian futures of science fiction and fantasy. Yet, while scholars have examined key films and genres, especially in response to the recent cycle of Hollywood 'mom coms', the analytic potential of reproduction on film as a larger theme remains largely untapped. This introduction to a special issue aims to consolidate a disparate literature by exploring diverse strands of film studies that are rarely considered in the same frame. It traces the contours of a little-studied history, pauses to consider in greater detail a few particularly instructive examples, and underscores some promising lines of inquiry. Along the way, it introduces the six original articles that constitute Reproduction on Film.

Abstract:The visibility of pregnancy in contemporary societies through various forms of medical imaging has often been interpreted by feminist critics as negative for the autonomy and experience of pregnant women. Here, I consider the representation of pregnancy in Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando, and Sally Potter's film of the same name arguing that, despite limited critical attention to Orlando's pregnancy, these texts offer a productive interpretation of gestation that counters conventionally reductive cultural images of that embodied state. In particular, I argue that Potter's translation of Woolf's novel to the screen gives us a useful model for thinking through the new visibility of pregnancy in contemporary Western culture.

Abstract:Between 1932 and 1963 University of Pittsburgh anatomist Davenport Hooker, Ph.D., performed and filmed noninvasive studies of reflexive movement on more than 150 surgically aborted human fetuses. The resulting imagery and information would contribute substantially to new visual and biomedical conceptions of fetuses as baby-like, autonomous human entities that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. Hooker's methods, though broadly conforming to contemporary research practices and views of fetuses, would not have been feasible later. But while Hooker and the 1930s medical and general public viewed live fetuses as acceptable materials for nontherapeutic research, they also shared a regard for fetuses as developing humans with some degree of social value. Hooker's research and the various reactions to his work demonstrate the varied and changing perspectives on fetuses and fetal experimentation, and the influence those views can have on biomedical research.

Abstract:[P(4)W(35)O(124){Re(CO)(3)}(2)](16-) (1), a Wells-Dawson [α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61)](10-) polyoxometalate (POM)-supported [Re(CO)(3)](+) complex containing covalent W(VI)-O-Re(I) bonds has been synthesized and characterized by several methods, including X-ray crystallography. This complex shows a high visible absorptivity (ε(470 nm) = 4000 M(-1) cm(-1) in water) due to the formation of a Re(I)-to-POM charge transfer (MPCT) band. The complex was investigated by computational modeling and transient absorption measurements in the visible and mid-IR regions. Optical excitation of the MPCT transition results in instantaneous (<50 fs) electron transfer from the Re(I) center to the POM ligand.

Abstract:Introduction Regular practice of mindfulness has proven effectiveness in the treatment of affective disorders (Cash and Whittingham, 2010), increases the level of satisfaction in life (Brown and Ryan, 2003), as well as the level of self-esteem (Rasmussen & Pidgeon, 2010). Using "Mulholland Drive" (2001) by David Lynch as an example, we will prove that transcendental cinema, through the unique slow character, the means of expression used and the emphasis placed on the metaphysical experiences of the characters, in which D. Lynch forces us to participate, makes the screening similar to a meditation session. Objectives The aim of this work is to indicate a new direction of research, linking cinema with psychoanalysis, philosophy and psychiatry and proving that a screening of transcendental cinema can be treated as a mindfulness meditation session. Methods This work is based on the film "Mulholland Drive" by D. Lynch and the understanding of transcendental cinema according to Paul Schrader. Using J. Kabat Zinn's scientific publications, we analyze cinema in terms of a meditation session and using the approach of first generation analysts (S. Freud, C. Gustav Jung, S. Spielrein) in terms of a therapeutic process based on psychoanalysis. Results "Mulholland Drive" subjects the protagonist to a therapy session: the woman lives guided by the unconscious, a dream that seems real and finally at the end she reaches her own true self. On screen, she undergoes successfully the therapeutic process. The transcendental cinema focuses on metaphysical sensations, has elongated scenes, creates dead time, viewer remains in the frame even when the character comes out of it, and strives for kenosis - the reduction of sensory experience. All of these qualities are crucial in mindfuless: focusing on emotions and feelings experienced in the moment, non-judgmental and calmly concentrating on single stimuli. This similarity allows us to treat a transcendental film show in the category of a meditation session. Conclusions Recognizing the similarity between the philosophy of mindfulness and transcendental cinema allows us to conclude that a film screening enriches us not only with knowledge about disorders and the therapeutic process, but is in itself a supportive element for mental health. Our work is the first to analyze cinema in the context of mindfulness meditation. In our opinion, culture should be more widely analyzed as a tool to support mental health and the development of one's own identity. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:The term “dividual” aims to present a critical view of the Western conception of persons and artworks as individuals. It is used in Euro-American anthropology in order to analyze the practical and ethical interferences between single persons and communities mainly in non-Western cultures. It is also used by Gilles Deleuze in Cinema 1. The Movement-Image in order to describe the aesthetic and self-affective character of films: since the filmic images cannot be temporarily fixed and individualized, he calls them “dividual”, much like contemporary plurivocal musical compositions. He reads their articulations as transitions between temporarily varying semiotic combinations; thus, they are not “‘divisible or indivisible’, but ‘dividual.’”(14) Referring to this Deleuzian concept, I want to delve into different films under this aesthetic perspective, exposing their character of mutual allusions and formal adaptations: from a docufiction by Jean Rouch to feature films by Jean-Luc Godard, Med Hondo and Jean-Pierre Bekolo. These films dividuate themselves due to their aesthetic interferences and the curious observation that certain European film styles were “invented” in an African context.
Pentazocine and flupirtine effects on spontaneous and evoked EEG activity.

Abstract:Somatosensory (SEP), auditory evoked potentials (AEP) and power spectral density of ongoing EEG (PSD) were investigated under different drug conditions: the opioid pentazocine (30 mg), the centrally acting non-narcotic analgesic flupirtine (80 mg) and placebo were administered i.v. in a double-blind cross-over study (intersession interval 7 days) with 20 healthy male subjects. Intracutaneous electrical stimuli were applied to the finger tip with randomized intensities of two- and threefold individual pain threshold. One stimulus block consisted of 80 trials. Mean values of two stimulus blocks per session were analyzed: one block before and one block 30 min after treatment. Pentazocine significantly reduced the peak-to peak amplitude of the late SEP components (N150-P240) from pretreatment to posttreatment blocks, and flupirtine diminished this amplitude to nearly the same degree. With placebo no substantial reduction was found. In contrast to these drug-induced changes in SEP, the AEP components showed no significant alterations after any treatment. The PSD under pentazocine showed a reduction of total power. This effect was mainly due to a reduced power in the alpha band. The PSD under flupirtine showed slight increases in power of theta, alpha and beta activity. Again, under placebo no changes from pretreatment to posttreatment conditions occurred. The difference in EEG change might suggest different sites of action of the two analgesics.

Abstract:In as much as the study of film has drawn in philosophy, it has tended to draw on the French and the German traditions. However, for the past twenty years an increasing literature has grown up in the Anglo-American tradition. Thanks in part to the publication of the anthology Post-Theory: Reconstructing Film Theory, this has tended to be brought under the heading of ‘cognitive film theory’ (Bordwell and Carroll 1996). This, as the editors of the anthology attempt to make clear, is misleading in suggesting a common approach rather than, as is characteristic of Anglo-American philosophy, an eschewal of grand theory and a journeyman approach to problems. Having said that, the editors of the anthology provide a broad characterization of the cognitive approach which fits with the approach taken in this chapter:We think that cognitivism is best characterised as a stance. A cognitivist analysis or explanation seeks to understand human thought, emotion, and action by appeal to processes of mental representation, naturalistic processes, and (some sense of) rational agency.
