Abstract:The use of micro-Raman spectroscopy, through chemical bond nano-scale probes, allows the changes in conformations (alpha helix -> beta sheet), chain orientation, disconnection of disulfide bonds (-20%) and the increase of intra and inter-chain distances during the strain to be distinguished. The combination of micro-Raman spectroscopy and a allows a quantitative measure of the extension of chemical bonds in the peptidic chain during loading. The nano-structural transformations of keratin during the strain of human hair in a dry environment (40-60 % relative humidity) and saturated with water have been studied. The water permits the sliding of the chains and decreases the bond energy hair. Spectral analyses and 2D correlation are two coherent and independent methods to follow change the Raman probes which are sensitive to structural . The between nano-mechanical (Raman) and micro-mechanical (strain/stress) analyses confirms the validity of the experimental results, tools and principles used, as well as the agreement with the structural model of keratin fibres described by Chapman & Hearle.
Spectroscopic Characterization of Heterogeneous Structure of<i>Samia</i><i>c</i><i>ynthia</i><i>r</i><i>icini</i>Silk Fibroin Induced by Stretching and Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Abstract:The C-13 CP/MAS NMR, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopies were used for monitoring the structural transition of Samia cynthia ricini (S. c. ricini) silk fibroin induced by stretching. Here the silk fibroin was obtained from the aqueous solution stored in the silk gland. All of these spectroscopic data indicate that the structural transition from a-helix to P-sheet occurs with increasing the stretching ratio, especially between the stretching ratios, x 4 and x 6. The C-13 chemical shifts of Ala C peak in the C-13 CP/MAS NMR spectrum change significantly depending on alpha-helix, random coil, and two kinds of beta-sheet structure, which make it possible to clarify the local structure and structural transition. Actually, the fraction of individual structure in the silk fibroin samples was determined from decomposition of the Ala Cbeta peak by assuming a Gaussian line shape. To examine the conformational change of Ala residues of the polyalanine region in S. c. ricini silk fibroin observed with these spectroscopic methods, MD simulations for four peptide molecules, AGGAGG(A)(12)GGAGAG, with alpha-helix conformation were performed in the presence of water molecules under different tensile strengths, and then additional MM calculations were performed after removal of water molecules. The change in the conformational character of Ala residues induced by stretching is explicable by these calculations.

Abstract:Hair is a composite protein fibre of natural origin, which is characterised by heterogenic morphological structure and consists of three concentric layers: cuticle, cortex and core. Hair consists of mainly two groups of proteins - α-keratins with low content of sulphur, the molecular weight of which fluctuates within 40–60 kDa and matrix proteins with the molecular weight from 10 to 25 kDa. α-keratins form microfibrillar structure, known as intermedial filaments which give hair elasticity and strength, and matrix or keratin-associated proteins have the function of a specific glue, connecting said filaments. The aim of the work is to determine structural characteristics of keratin fibres, different in their morphological structure, in order to select optimal approaches to creation of novel biocomposite materials. Samples of human hair, sheep wool and rat hair were analysed. It was shown that keratin fibres of different morphological structure differ as to their amino acid composition, namely in content of lysine, leucine, histidine, tyrosine, cystine, arginine, aspartic acid and glycine. It was found that the ratio between the crystalline and amorphous phases of fibre grows in the series human hair®rat hair ®sheep wool and constitutes respectively 1.9; 2.1; 2.3. It was proved that the content of protein with high content of tyrosine and glycine is twice higher in rat hair than in wool fibre. The said proteins were not identified in human hair

Abstract:Animal hairs, like other natural fibers, display excellent mechanical properties, especially, the tensile toughness and fracture resistance. Several structure-mechanics models have attributed mechanical superiority of hair to its unique nanocomposite structure which consists of intermediate filaments and matrix. However, the contribution of fibrils and their associated interfaces on the mechanical properties of animal hairs remains unclear. Herein, using the small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and an ultrahigh-speed microcamera system, it is confirmed that the conformation and fibrils (which represent both nanofibrils and microfibrils) of the keratin channel endow tensile toughness and fracture resistance to camel hairs. During the stretching process, an α-β transition occurred at the secondary structure level, leading to the formation of a tensile plateau, which improves the toughness compared with the structure without a conformation transition. Meanwhile, fibrils further toughened the camel hairs and resisted their crack propagation through confined fibrillar slippage, splitting, and pulling. These structure-property relations in natural hairs can inspire damage-tolerant polymer fiber design.

Abstract:Human hair is a complex nanocomposite fiber whose physical appearance and mechanical strength are governed by a variety of factors like ethnicity, cleaning, grooming, chemical treatments and environment. Characterization of mechanical properties of hair is essential to develop better cosmetic products and advance biological and cosmetic science. Hence the behavior of hair under tension is of interest to beauty care science. Human hair fibers experience tensile forces as they are groomed and styled. Previous researches about tensile testing of human hair were seemingly focused on the longitudinal direction, such as elastic modulus, yield strength, breaking strength and strain at break after different treatment. In this research, experiment of evaluating the mechanical properties of human hair, such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, was designed and conducted. The principle of the experimental instrument was presented. The system of testing instrument to evaluate the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio was introduced. The range of Poisson's ratio of the hair from the identical person was evaluated. Experiments were conducted for testing the mechanical properties after acid, aqueous alkali and neutral solution treatment of human hair. Explanation of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio was conducted base on these results of experiments. These results can be useful to hair treatment and cosmetic product.
Secondary structure estimation and properties analysis of stretched Asian and Caucasian hair

Abstract:Background: In this previous work, we investigated the secondary structure changes of stretched yak hairs by deconvolution, secondary derivation, and curve fitting and determined the number of bands and their positions in order to resolve the protein spectrum of Raman spectroscopy. Objectives: The secondary structure estimation and properties analysis of stretched Asian and Caucasian hair were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, tensile curves, and measurement of density. Methods: The hairs were stretched, dried, and baked at ratios 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%. Results: The analysis of the amide I band indicated that the transformation from α-helix to β-pleated structure occurred during the stretching process, which could be verified from the tensile analysis. The cysteine oxide in S-O vibration area exhibited that stretching led to the breakage of the disulfide bonds. When the stretching ratio of Caucasian hair was more than a certain ratio, the fiber macromolecular structure was destroyed because Caucasian hair had finer diameter and less medulla than Asian hair. The β turn was easier to retract compared with other conformations, resulted in the content increase. The density measurements revealed that the structure of Caucasian hair was indeed more destroyed than that of Asian hair. The cuticles characterization indicated the length of scales was stretched longer and the thickness became thinner. Caucasian hair tended to collapse to form small fragments at the early stage of stretching. With the increase in stretching ratio, the scales of Caucasian hair lifted up, then flaked off and the scale interval increased accordingly. Asian hair was more easily peeled off than Caucasian hair cuticles with the increase in stretching ratio. Conclusions: The secondary structure of Caucasian hair was destroyed more easily than that of Asian hair.
Characterization of the mechanical properties of the cortex region of human hair fibers by multiparametric Atomic Force Microscopy mapping

Abstract:We show the benefit of the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in spectroscopy force mode (FV: force volume) for evaluation of the cosmetic active effectiveness in improving the mechanical properties of human hair fibers cortex region. For this, we characterized human hair fibers without and with chemical damage caused by bleaching process. Fiber and resin (embedding material) data were obtained simultaneously in the mapping in order to have the resin data as a reference to ensure a coherent comparison between data from the different fiber groups. Our AFM results, which were evaluated using statistical tests, demonstrated the degradation of fibers after bleaching, corroborating the findings of transmission electron microscopy analysis and the effectiveness of a cosmetic active ingredient in improving the Young's modulus (elastic modulus) ( E ) of the damaged fibers. We also found a radial decrease in the natural logarithm of Young's modulus ln( E ) along the cross-section of the active group fiber, which is compatible with confocal Raman spectroscopy analysis by other authors, demonstrating variation of the active permeation with depth. We note that Young's modulus was also determined by a tensile tester (macro-scale technique), in which it was not possible to obtain statistically significant differences between the groups, evidencing the advantage of the FV-AFM analysis. We also found an increase in ln( E ) accompanied by a decrease in maximum adhesion force between tip and sample (negative Pearson correlation coefficient). This result can be explained by the fact that structures composed of hydrophobic components have a higher Young's modulus than structures composed of hydrophilic components. • Bleaching damage and cosmetic hair treatment assessed by AFM, TEM, and tensile tester • Young's modulus by AFM nanoindentation of hair fibers monitored by sample standard • Young's modulus changes radially along the cross-section due to the cosmetic active • AFM data show statistically significant differences among sample groups • Tensile tester was not able to show statistically significant differences

Fiber arrangement as well as cosmetic treatment control the sensorial perception. The present study explores the respective influence of these two aspects by predicting the product performance in terms of tactile perception.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Materials and Methods</h3><p>Friction forces between hair swatches of different curl patterns using a finger‐like probe have been measured to better mimic real‐life hair/finger contact. Measurements of fiber alignment, hair diameter (thickness), and compression tests were performed on natural and treated swatches to assess the respective weight of these parameters.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>Conditioned hair exhibit an adhesive behavior measured at the start of the frictional movement. Conversely, natural hair is influenced by fiber reorientation. After a few seconds, friction‐related signals stabilize. Thus, the averaged friction forces do not only depend on hair thickness, but increase with a decreased alignment of the fibers.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>Intrinsic (diameter/curliness) and external (orientation/ friction/compression) characteristics allow to define a model of "macroscopic" roughness linked to the sensorial characterization. As friction of hair swatches depends upon fiber alignment and coating, this combined approach is potentially a very useful in vitro test, as an alternative or complementary method to sensory tests.</p></section>

New methodology for mechanical characterization of human superficial facial tissue anisotropic behaviour in vivo

Abstract:Mechanical characterization of human superficial facial tissue has important applications in biomedical science, computer assisted forensics, graphics, and consumer goods development. Specifically, the latter may include facial hair removal devices. Predictive accuracy of numerical models and their ability to elucidate biomechanically relevant questions depends on the acquisition of experimental data and mechanical tissue behavior representation. Anisotropic viscoelastic behavioral characterization of human facial tissue, deformed in vivo with finite strain, however, is sparse. Employing an experimental-numerical approach, a procedure is presented to evaluate multidirectional tensile properties of superficial tissue layers of the face in vivo. Specifically, in addition to stress relaxation, displacement-controlled multi-step ramp-and-hold protocols were performed to separate elastic from inelastic properties. For numerical representation, an anisotropic hyperelastic material model in conjunction with a time domain linear viscoelasticity formulation with Prony series was employed. Model parameters were inversely derived, employing finite element models, using multi-criteria optimization. The methodology provides insight into mechanical superficial facial tissue properties. Experimental data shows pronounced anisotropy, especially with large strain. The stress relaxation rate does not depend on the loading direction, but is strain-dependent. Preconditioning eliminates equilibrium hysteresis effects and leads to stress-strain repeatability. In the preconditioned state tissue stiffness and hysteresis insensitivity to strain rate in the applied range is evident. The employed material model fits the nonlinear anisotropic elastic results and the viscoelasticity model reasonably reproduces time-dependent results. Inversely deduced maximum anisotropic long-term shear modulus of linear elasticity is G∞,maxaniso=2.43kPa and instantaneous initial shear modulus at an applied rate of ramp loading is G0,maxaniso=15.38kPa. Derived mechanical model parameters constitute a basis for complex skin interaction simulation.
The Structure of the "amorphous" Matrix of Keratins.

Abstract:Various keratin fibers, particularly human hairs, were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, TEM, solid-state H-1 NMR and Transient Electro-Thermal Technique, TET. The results converge to suggest that the matrix of keratin fiber cortex, far from being amorphous, has a well-defined nano-scale grainy structure, the size of these grains being around 2-4 nm. The size of the grains appears to strongly depend on the chemical treatment of the fiber, on the temperature and on the relative humidity of the environment, as well as on the physiological factors at the level of fiber production in follicle. By suggesting an organization at the nano-scale of the protein chains in these grains, likely to be Keratin Associated Proteins, the results challenge the view of matrix as a homogeneous glassy material. Moreover, they indicate the potential of further investigating the purpose of this structure that appears to reflect not only chemical treatments of keratins but also biological processes at the level of the follicle. Abstract:We propose a model for the mechanical behavior of protein materials. Based on a limited number of experimental macromolecular parameters (persistence and contour lengths, rate of unfolding dissipation) we obtain the macroscopic behavior of keratin fibers (human, cow, and rabbit hair), taking into account the damage and residual stretches effects which are fundamental in many functions of life. We support our theoretical results by showing that our model is robust and able to reproduce with high quantitive accuracy the cyclic experimental behavior of different keratinous protein materials we tested. We also show the capability of describing, even if with lower precision, the dissipation and permanent strain effects in spider silks.

Continuous High-Content Keratin Fibers with Balanced Properties Derived from Wool Waste

Abstract:The full utilization of discarded wool for the preparation of continuous recycled keratin fibers has been a challenging subject. The key issue lies in how to utilize wool keratin as much as possible without damaging the main chain structure of the protein molecules. Based on small molecule simulation reactions, the authors find out that disulfide bonds, the only cross-linking bonds in keratin, can be effectively broken by starch-derived dithiothreitol, and the resultant keratin can be well separated by the cosmetic ingredient sodium dodecyl sulfate, which forms micelles that stabilize the keratin solution. Accordingly, the traditional strong hydrogen-bond breakers like urea and LiBr can no longer be used, which helps to protect the integrity of keratin. The resultant fully dissolved, highly concentrated keratin solution (keratin content = 18 wt %) is directly applied for wet spinning. To toughen and strengthen the envisaged keratin fibers, a few hydroxypropyl cellulose and glutaraldehyde and 4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) are incorporated. Abstract:The hair is a filamentous biomaterial consisting of the cuticle , the cortex and the medulla , all held together by the cell membrane complex. The cortex mostly consists of helical keratin proteins that spiral together to form coiled-coil dimers, intermediate filaments, micro-fibrils and macro-fibrils. We used X-ray diffraction to study hair structure on the molecular level, at length scales between ∼3–90 Å, in hopes of developing a diagnostic method for diseases affecting hair structure allowing for fast and noninvasive screening. However, such an approach can only be successful if common hair treatments do not affect molecular hair structure. We found that a single use of shampoo and conditioner has no effect on packing of keratin molecules, structure of the intermediate filaments or internal lipid composition of the membrane complex. Permanent waving treatments are known to break and reform disulfide linkages in the hair. Single application of a perming product was found to deeply penetrate the hair and reduce the number of keratin coiled-coils and change the structure of the intermediate filaments. Signals related to the coiled-coil structure of the α -keratin molecules at 5 and 9.5 Å were found to be decreased while a signal associated with the organization of the intermediate filaments at 47 Å was significantly elevated in permed hair. Both these observations are related to breaking of the bonds between two coiled-coil keratin dimers.

Abstract:Human hair ( approximately 50-100 microm in diameter) is a nanocomposite biological fiber with well-characterized microstructures, and is of great interest for both cosmetic science and materials science. Characterization of nanotribological and nanomechanical properties of human hair including the coefficient of friction and scratch resistance is essential to develop better shampoo and conditioner products and advance biological and cosmetic science. In this paper, the coefficient of friction and scratch resistance of Caucasian and Asian hair at virgin, chemo-mechanically damaged, and conditioner-treated conditions are measured using a nanoscratch technique with a Nano Indenter II system. The scratch tests were performed on both the single cuticle cell and multiple cuticle cells of each hair sample, and the scratch wear tracks were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the scratch tests. The effect of soaking on the coefficient of friction, scratch resistance, hardness and Young's modulus of hair surface were also studied by performing experiments on hair samples which had been soaked in de-ionized water for 5 min. The nanotribological and nanomechanical properties of human hair as a function of hair structure (hair of different ethnicity), damage, treatment and soaking are discussed.
Human hair: subtle change in the thioester groups dynamics observed by combining neutron scattering, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis

Abstract:Hair analysis plays an important role in forensic toxicology and biomonitoring tests. However, cosmetic treatments cause changes to the hair. Thus, a better understanding of the hair's structure and the factors that influence its composition is critical. It is known that oxidative treatments modify the hair chemical, structural and mechanical properties. These treatments also cause degradation of the melanin as well as of the structures present in the hair cuticle and cortex. Considering that the literature is unanimous regarding the increase in hydrophilicity and porosity promoted in human hair by bleaching, in this work we investigated how this oxidative damage is triggered. By combining several techniques, inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction, we were able to connect the chemical and structural changes to a subtle dynamic modification of the proton mobility in the hair fibers. In addition, alterations in the thermal behavior evidenced a small denaturation of <i>α</i>-keratin intermediate filaments and a slight decrease in the amount of confined water in the hair fibers. Moreover, data obtained by neutron spectroscopy indicated that bleaching attacks the thioester groups of the proteins causing larger proton mobility of the hydrogenous components (water, protein and/or lipids).

Abstract:The use of a kinetic formalism, with a time‐dependent rate constant, allows for describing hair fibre swelling while absorbing moisture and provides hints about the entanglement of the keratin chains inside the fibre. Objective The rate process of moisture sorption by human hair has been analysed in order to hints for helping deepen knowledge on the hair structure and to explain the behaviour of hair in response to moisture. Methods The isotherms of moisture sorption by hair were recorded, via dynamic vapour sorption (DVS), for untreated (virgin) and treated (heat‐shaped and bleached) hair, as well as for separated cuticle and cortex. Results By considering that, during moisture uptake, the hair fibres also swell, it is possible to introduce a time‐dependent rate constant for describing the kinetics of the moisture sorption. This model allows for clearly separating the moisture sorption processes occurring in Cuticle and in Cortex and for proposing a role of chain entanglement in the two main compartments of the fibre. It may also provide some hints on the structural changes occurring in the fibre after different cosmetic treatments. The influence of the weight of the sample on the kinetics of the sorption process has also been noted and quantified. The analysis pointed to a transition occurring at around 30% relative humidity, assigned to the opening of the hair inner structure, and accommodation of more water molecules. This allowed for an estimate of the value of the activation energy of the water molecules reacting with the active sites, which was found to be in good agreement with results published in the literature. Conclusion The analysis of the kinetics of moisture sorption by hair was shown not only to provide information on the chain entanglement inside the fibre and the effect of cosmetic treatments but also to demonstrate and quantify the influence of fibre density on the sorption process. It is thus suggested that, along with examination of the hysteresis, the analysis of sorption kinetics helps reveal a more complete picture of hair moisture management. Résumé Objectif Le processus de taux de sorption de l'humidité par les cheveux humains a été analysé afin d'aider à approfondir les connaissances sur la structure des cheveux et expliquer le comportement des cheveux en réponse à l'humidité. Méthodes les isothermes de la sorption de l'humidité par les cheveux ont été enregistrés, via la sorption dynamique de la vapeur (DVS), pour les cheveux non traités (vierge) et traités (thermoformés et peroxydés), ainsi que pour les cuticules et le cortex séparés. Résultats en considérant que, lors de l'absorption de l'humidité, les fibres capillaires gonflent également, il est possible d'introduire une constante de taux linéaire pour décrire la cinétique de la sorption de l'humidité. Ce modèle permet de séparer clairement les processus de sorption d'humidité survenant dans les cuticules et dans le cortex et de proposer un rôle d'enchevêtrement des chaînes dans les deux principaux compartiments de la fibre. Il peut également fournir des indices sur les changements structurels survenant dans la fibre après différents traitements cosmétiques. L'influence du poids de l'échantillon sur la cinétique du processus de sorption a également été notée et quantifiée. L'analyse a indiqué une transition se produisant à environ 30 % d'humidité relative, attribuée à l'ouverture de la structure interne des cheveux, et à la présence d'un plus grand nombre de molécules d'eau. Cela a permis d'estimer la valeur de l'énergie d'activation des molécules d'eau réagissant avec les sites actifs, ce qui s'est avéré bien en accord avec les résultats publiés dans la littérature. Conclusion il a été démontré que l'analyse de la cinétique de la sorption de l'humidité par les cheveux fournit non seulement des informations sur l'enchevêtrement des chaînes à l'intérieur de la fibre et sur l'effet des traitements cosmétiques, mais démontre et quantifie également l'influence de la densité des fibres sur le processus de sorption. Il est donc indiqué que, parallèlement à l'examen de l'hystérésis, l'analyse de la cinétique de sorption permet d'obtenir un panorama de la gestion de l'humidité par les cheveux.

Abstract:<span>Hair or bristle is one of the key by-products of humane slaughter of pigs. In the present study, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used for examining protein secondary structure of hair fiber from different breeds of pigs (Ghungroo, Ninag Megha, Hampshire, and Duroc). Prominent amide I (1635–1648 cm<sup>−1</sup>) and amide II (1517–1528 cm <sup>−1</sup>) bands could be observed in the spectra. Differences in presence/absence of certain FTIR bands between breeds suggests influence of genetic background in the structure of hair fiber. Deconvolution resolved secondary structure of protein in amide I region of spectra into corresponding α-helix (38.0 ± 2.9%), β-sheets (32.2 ± 2.0%), β-turns (19.4 ± 3.1%) and unorganized structural components (10.3 ± 2.5%). Heating of fibers from 80°C to 120°C resulted in changes in amide regions and α-helix to β-sheet ratio of amide I band. Further, correlations were calculated between area under the curve of various FTIR bands and tensile properties of the fiber. Area of FTIR band at 1635 cm <sup>−1</sup> was positively correlated with tenacity, initial modulus, extensibility, and work of rupture (r = 0.30 to 0.39). In nutshell, the study reveals subtle differences in secondary structure of hair with respect to breed or temperature treatment and suggests relation between FTIR spectral characteristics and tensile properties.</span>

Abstract:The mechanical properties of skin are important for a number of applications including surgery, dermatology, impact biomechanics and forensic science. In this study we have investigated the influence of location and orientation on the deformation characteristics of 56 samples of excised human skin. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out at a strain rate of 0.012s$^{-1}$ on skin from the back. Digital Image Correlation was used for 2D strain measurement and a histological examination of the dermis was also performed. The mean ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was 21.6$\pm$8.4MPa, the mean failure strain 54$\pm$17%, the mean initial slope 1.18$\pm$0.88MPa, the mean elastic modulus 83.3$\pm$34.9MPa and the mean strain energy was 3.6$\pm$1.6MJ/m$^3$. A multivariate analysis of variance has shown that these mechanical properties of skin are dependent upon the orientation of Langer lines (P$<$0.0001-P=0.046). The location of specimens on the back was also found to have a significant effect on the UTS (P =0.0002), the elastic modulus (P=0.001) and the strain energy (P=0.0052). The histological investigation concluded that there is a definite correlation between the orientation of Langer Lines and the preferred orientation of collagen fibres in the dermis (P$<$0.001). The data obtained in this study will provide essential information for those wishing to model the skin using a structural constitutive model.

Abstract:Epoxy matrix composites reinforced with high-performance fibers, such as carbon, Kevlar, and glass, exhibit excellent specific stiffness and strength in many mechanical applications. However, these composites are disappointingly non-recyclable and are usually disposed of in landfill sites, with no realistic prospect for biodegradation in a reasonable time. In contrast, moldable composites with carbonized elastomeric matrices developed in the last decades possess attractive mechanical properties in final net-shape products and can also be incinerated or recycled. Many carbon and inorganic fillers have recently been evaluated to adjust the properties of carbonized elastomeric composites. Renewable organic fillers, such as human or animal hair, offer an attractive fibrous material with substantial potential for reinforcing composites with elastomeric matrices. Samples of unidirectional fiber composites (with hair volume fractions up to 7%) and quasi-isotropic short fiber composites (with hair volume fractions up to 20%) of human hair-reinforced nitrile butadiene rubbers (HH-NBRs) were produced in the peroxide-cured and carbonized states. The samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and photoacoustic microscopy. Mechanical tests were performed under tension using a miniature universal testing machine. The expected effect of fiber reinforcement on the overall mechanical performance was demonstrated for both cured and carbonized composites. Considerable enhancement of the elastic modulus (up to ten times), ultimate tensile strength (up to three times), and damage tolerance was achieved. The evidence of satisfactory interfacial bonding between hair and rubber was confirmed via SEM imaging of fracture surfaces. The suitability of photoacoustic microscopy was assessed for 3D reconstructions of the fiber sub-system’s spatial distribution and non-destructive testing.
