Abstract:Photonic quantum technologies have been extensively studied in quantum information science, owing to the high-speed transmission and outstanding low-noise properties of photons. However, applications based on photonic entanglement are restricted due to the diffraction limit. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the maintaining of quantum polarization entanglement in a nanoscale hybrid plasmonic waveguide composed of a fiber taper and a silver nanowire. The transmitted state throughout the waveguide has a fidelity of 0.932 with the maximally polarization entangled state Φ(+). Furthermore, the Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt (CHSH) inequality test performed, resulting in value of 2.495 ± 0.147 > 2, demonstrates the violation of the hidden variable model. Because the plasmonic waveguide confines the effective mode area to subwavelength scale, it can bridge nanophotonics and quantum optics and may be used as near-field quantum probe in a quantum near-field micro/nanoscope, which can realize high spatial resolution, ultrasensitive, fiber-integrated, and plasmon-enhanced detection.

Abstract:In typical epitaxial quantum dots (QDs) the ideally degenerate optical excitons are energy split, preventing the formation of two-photon entanglement in a biexciton decay. We use an external field, here a continuous-wave laser tuned to the QD in the ac Stark limit, to cancel the splitting and create two-photon entanglement. Quantum-state tomography is used to construct the two-photon density matrix. When the splitting is removed it satisfies well-known entanglement tests. Our approach shows that polarization-entangled photons can be routinely produced in semiconductor nanostructures.

Abstract:Integrated microresonator facilitates the realization of quantum frequency comb (QFC), which provides a large number of discrete frequency modes with broadband spectral range and narrow linewidth. However, all previous demonstrations have focused on the generation of energy-time or time-bin entangled photons from QFC. Realizing polarization-entangled quantum frequency comb, which is a useful resource for the fundamental study of quantum mechanics and quantum information applications, remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a broadband polarization-entangled quantum frequency comb by combining an integrated silicon-nitride microresonator with a Sagnac interferometer. With a free spectral range of about 99 GHz and a narrow linewidth of about 190 MHz, our source provides 22 polarization-entangled photon pairs with frequency covering the whole telecom C-band. The entanglement fidelities for all 22 pairs are above 81%, including 17 pairs with fidelities higher than 90%. Our demonstration paves the way for employing the polarization-entangled quantum frequency comb in quantum network using CMOS technology as well as standard dense wavelength division-multiplexing technology. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.20.064032 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:In this Letter, the 1.5 mu m polarization entanglement generation is realized in a silicon wire waveguide utilizing its birefringence. In this scheme, two orthogonal polarized correlated states are generated by scalar processes of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in the quasi-transverse electrical and quasi-transverse magnetic modes, respectively. Meanwhile, the vector processes of SFWM are suppressed by the group birefringence in the waveguide. The maximum polarization entangled state is generated by optimizing the pump polarization, which is demonstrated by the experiments of two-photon interference and polarization indistinguishability at one side. The fringe visibilities of two-photon interferences are 96.8 +/- 4.7% and 86.0 +/- 3.7% under two nonorthogonal polarization detection settings, respectively. This scheme provides a simple way to realize silicon integrated sources for 1.5 mu m polarization entanglement generation. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
Compact Polarization-Entangled Photon-Pair Source Based on a Dual-Periodically-poled Ti:LiNbO3 Waveguide.

Abstract:We present an experimental realization of a compact and reliable way to build a nondegenerate polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on a dual-periodically-poled $ {\rm Ti}:{{\rm LiNbO}_3} $Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide, which is in the telecommunication window and compatible with the fiber quantum networks. The dual-periodic structure allows two inherently concurrent quasiphase-matching spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes pumped by a single laser beam, hence enabling our source to be compact and stable. We show that our source has a high brightness of $ B = 1.22{\rm } \times {\rm }{10^7}\;{\rm pairs}/(\rm s \times mW \times nm) $B=1.22×107pairs/(s×mW×nm). With quantum state tomography, we estimate an entanglement fidelity of $ 0.945 \pm 0.003 $0.945±0.003. A violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality with $ S = 2.75 \pm 0.03 $S=2.75±0.03 is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

Abstract:Polarization-entangled photon pairs are essential sources for photonic quantum information processing. However, generating entangled photon pairs with large detuning via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) often requires complex configurations to compensate for phase matching. Here, we propose a simple and efficient scheme to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs based on type-0 SPDC in a thin-film lithium niobate waveguide with a single poling period. By utilizing the strong dispersion engineering capabilities of thin-film waveguides, we can achieve both degenerate and highly detuned entangled photon pairs. Furthermore, we demonstrate on-chip temporal compensation using an integrated waveguide structure. Our approach offers a compact and scalable solution for integrated quantum photonic circuits.

Compact Polarization-Entangled Photon Source Based on Coexisting Noncritically Birefringent and Quasi Phase Matching in a Nonlinear Crystal

Abstract:Polarization-entangled photons are indispensable to numerous quantum technologies and fundamental studies. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel source that generates collinear polarization-entangled photons by simultaneously achieving two distinct types of phase-matching conditions (noncritically birefringent and quasi phase matching) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal with a large poling period of 2 mm. The photon pairs are generated in a polarization-entangled state with a fidelity and concurrence of 0.998 and 0.935, respectively, and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality by 84 standard deviations. The compact source does not require interferometer, delicate domain structures, or post selection, and is advantageous for scalable quantum computing and communication, where many replicas or chip-scale devices are needed.

Abstract:Polarization-entangled photon pair sources are essential for diverse quantum technologies, such as quantum communication, computation, and imaging. However, the generation of complex polarization-entangled quantum states has long been constrained by the available nonlinear susceptibility tensor of natural nonlinear crystals, necessitating a cumbersome and intricate setup for additional coherent superposition or post-selection. In this study, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a nanoscale polarization-entangled photon pair source utilizing an artificially-engineered metamaterial platform. This platform is based on a plasmonic metasurface that is strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material. By precisely engineering resonances at both pump and signal/idler wavelengths, and leveraging the field enhancement provided by the ENZ effect, the photon pair generation efficiency of the 68-nm-thick metasurface is significantly boosted. More notably, the ENZ metasurface platform facilitates versatile manipulation of the system's anisotropic second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, enabling direct control over the polarization states of the photon pairs, which leads to the generation of a polarization-entangled Bell state without the need for additional components. Our approach opens a new avenue for the simultaneous photon pair generation and quantum state engineering in a compact platform.

Generation and dynamical manipulation of polarization entangled Bell states by a silicon quantum photonic circuit

Abstract: A silicon quantum photonic circuit was proposed and demonstrated as an integrated quantum light source for telecom band polarization entangled Bell state generation and dynamical manipulation. Biphoton states were firstly generated in four silicon waveguides by spontaneous four wave mixing. They were transformed to polarization entangled Bell states through on-chip quantum interference and quantum superposition, and then coupled to optical fibers. The property of polarization entanglement in generated photon pairs was demonstrated by two-photon interferences under two non-orthogonal polarization bases. The output state could be dynamically switched between two polarization entangled Bell states, which was demonstrated by the experiment of simplified Bell state measurement. The experiment results indicate that its manipulation speed supported a modulation rate of several tens kHz, showing its potential on applications of quantum communication and quantum information processing requiring dynamical quantum entangled Bell state control.

Abstract:Generating nonclassical states of photons such as polarization entangled states on a monolithic chip is a crucial step towards practical applications of optical quantum information processing such as quantum computing and quantum key distribution. Here we demonstrate two polarization entangled photon sources in a single monolithic semiconductor waveguide. The first source is achieved through the concurrent utilization of two spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes, namely type-0 and type-I SPDC processes. The chip can also generate polarization entangled photons via the type-II SPDC process, enabling the generation of both co-polarized and cross-polarized entangled photons in the same device. In both cases, polarization entanglement is generated directly on the chip without the use of any off-chip compensation, interferometry or bandpass filtering. This enables direct, chip-based generation of both Bell states $(|H,H\rangle+|V,V\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$ and $(|H,V\rangle+|V,H\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$ simultaneously utilizing the same pump source. In addition, based on compound semiconductors, this chip can be directly integrated with it own pump laser. This technique ushers an era of self-contained, integrated, electrically pumped, room-temperature polarization entangled photon sources.

Abstract:We report the realization of a fiber coupled polarization entangled photon-pair source at 1310 nm based on a birefringent titanium in-diffused waveguide integrated on periodically poled lithium niobate. By taking advantage of a dedicated and high-performance setup, we characterized the quantum properties of the pairs by measuring two-photon interference in both Hong-Ou-Mandel and standard Bell inequality configurations. We obtained, for the two sets of measurements, interference net visibilities reaching nearly 100%, which represent important and competitive results compared to similar waveguide-based configurations already reported. These results prove the relevance of our approach as an enabling technology for long-distance quantum communication.

Abstract:Entanglement enables many promising applications in quantum technology. Devising new generation methods and harnessing entanglement are prerequisites for practical applications. Here we realize a distinct polarization-entangled source by simultaneously achieving type-0 and type-I backward quasi-phase matching (BQPM) through spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a single bulk crystal, which is different from all previous entangled-source configurations. Pumping the crystal with a single polarized beam generates a non-maximally polarization-entangled state, which can be further projected to a maximal Bell state with a pair of Brewster windows. Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiments are done on polarization-degenerate photon pairs for both type-0 and type-I BQPM processes for the first time. The emitted photons in both processes have a bandwidth as narrow as 15.7 GHz. The high quality of this source is characterized by various methods. The rather simple configuration, narrow bandwidth, and high entanglement quality make the source very promising for many quantum information tasks.

Abstract:In this paper, hyper-entanglement on polarization and energy-time is generated based on a silicon micro-ring cavity. The silicon micro-ring cavity is placed in a fiber loop connected by a polarization beam splitter. Photon pairs are generated by the spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in the cavity bi-directionally. The two photon states of photon pairs propagate along the two directions of the fiber loop and are superposed in the polarization beam splitter with orthogonal polarizations, leading to the polarization entanglement generation. On the other hand, the energy-time entanglement is an intrinsic property of photon pairs generated by the SFWM, which maintains in the process of the state superposition. The property of polarization entanglement is demonstrated by the two photon interferences under two non-orthogonal polarization bases. The property of energy-time entanglement is demonstrated by the Franson type interference under two non-orthogonal phase bases. The raw visibilities of all the measured interference fringes are higher than 1/2, the bench mark for violation of the Bell inequality. It indicates that silicon micro-ring cavity is a promising candidate to realize high performance hyper-entanglement generation.

Abstract:Polarization entanglement holds significant importance for photonic quantum technologies. Recently emerging subwavelength nonlinear quantum light sources, e.g., GaP and LiNbO3 thin films, benefiting from the relaxed phase-matching constraints and volume confinement, has shown intriguing properties, such as high-dimensional hyperentanglement and robust entanglement anti-degradation. Van der Waals (vdW) NbOCl2 crystal, renowned for its superior optical nonlinearities, has emerged as one of ideal candidates for ultrathin quantum light sources [Nature 613, 53 (2023)]. However, polarization-entanglement is inaccessible in NbOCl2 crystal due to its unfavorable nonlinear susceptibility tensor. Here, by leveraging the twist-stacking degree of freedom inherently in vdW systems, we showcase the preparation of tunable polarization entanglement and quantum Bell states. Our work not only provides a new and tunable polarization-entangled vdW photon-pair source, but also introduces a new knob in engineering the entanglement state of quantum light at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Integrated photonic circuits are one of the most promising platforms for large-scale photonic quantum information systems due to their small physical size and stable interferometers with near-perfect lateral-mode overlaps. Since many quantum information protocols are based on qubits defined by the polarization of photons, we must develop integrated building blocks to generate, manipulate, and measure the polarization-encoded quantum state on a chip. The generation unit is particularly important. Here we show the first integrated polarization-entangled photon pair source on a chip. We have implemented the source as a simple and stable silicon-on-insulator photonic circuit that generates an entangled state with 91 \pm 2% fidelity. The source is equipped with versatile interfaces for silica-on-silicon or other types of waveguide platforms that accommodate the polarization manipulation and projection devices as well as pump light sources. Therefore, we are ready for the full-scale implementation of photonic quantum information systems on a chip.

CMOS photonic integrated source of ultrabroadband polarization-entangled photons

Abstract:We showcase a fully on-chip CMOS-fabricated silicon photonic integrated circuit employing a bidirectionally pumped microring and polarization splitter-rotators tailored for the generation of ultrabroadband ($>$9 THz), high-fidelity (90-98%) polarization-entangled photons. Spanning the optical C+L-band and producing over 116 frequency-bin pairs on a 38.4 GHz-spaced grid, this source is ideal for flex-grid wavelength-multiplexed entanglement distribution in multiuser networks.

Abstract:Spontaneous four wave mixing in nonlinear waveguide is one of the excellent technique for generating photon pairs in well-defined guided modes. Here we present a comprehensive study of the frequency characteristic of correlated photon pairs generated in telecom C-band from a dispersion-engineered silicon wire waveguide. We have demonstrated that the waveguide configuration,shape of pump pulse,two-photon absorption as well as linear losses have significant influences on the biphoton spectral characteristics and the amount of frequency entanglement generated. The superior performance as well as the structural compactness and CMOS compatibility makes the silicon wire waveguide an ideal integrated platform for the implementation of on-chip quantum technologies.

Abstract:Cryogenic integrated nonlinear photonics can provide fundamental building blocks for scalable photonic quantum computing and optical interfacing among different platforms. Here, we investigate the spontaneous four-wave mixing effect in an integrated silicon waveguide with cryogenic operating conditions (4 K) and employ the system to generate the entangled photon-pair source, one of the key elements of photonic quantum information applications. We experimentally prove that even at cryogenic temperatures, the four-wave mixing effect in silicon waveguides is still an effective method to generate quantum photonic sources. The cryogenic photon-pair source is verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of similar to 2 THz. Furthermore, the source is used to generate high-quality frequency-multiplexed energy-time entangled states. Our results will advance the development of cryogenic nonlinear photonics and scalable integrated photonics for quantum information processing.
