Abstract:This work introduces a stabilised finite element formulation for the Stokes flow problem with a nonlinear slip boundary condition of friction type. The boundary condition is enforced with the help of an additional Lagrange multiplier representing boundary traction and the stabilised formulation is based on simultaneously stabilising both the pressure and the traction. We establish the stability and the a priori error analyses, and perform a numerical convergence study in order to verify the theory.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to stabilize the numerical solution method of the finite element method in the Stokes flow problem with nonlinear slip boundary conditions. Specifically, the author focuses on the Stokes flow problem under frictional nonlinear slip boundary conditions. Such problems are relatively common in fluid mechanics, especially when describing the interaction between fluids and solid surfaces, for example, the situation where a diaphragm leaks only when the pressure is large enough, or the flow of glaciers on bedrock. ### Main contributions of the paper: 1. **Introduction of the stabilized finite element method**: The author proposes a new stabilized finite element method to deal with nonlinear slip boundary conditions by simultaneously stabilizing pressure and traction. This method not only improves the stability of the numerical solution but also can theoretically ensure the accuracy of error estimates. 2. **Theoretical analysis**: The author establishes the stability and a priori error analysis of this method. The effectiveness of the theoretical results is verified through numerical convergence studies. 3. **Numerical experiments**: The author conducts detailed numerical experiments to verify the convergence and stability of the proposed stabilized finite element method on different meshes. The experimental results show that this method can also obtain good numerical results in the lowest - order case. ### Specific problem description: - **Stokes flow problem**: The Stokes flow problem is a classical model for describing fluid motion at low Reynolds numbers and is usually used to describe slowly flowing fluids. - **Nonlinear slip boundary conditions**: Under such conditions, the tangential velocity of the fluid on the boundary will be non - zero only when the shear stress exceeds a preset friction threshold. This boundary condition can be expressed in the form of an inequality, for example: \[ u_n = 0, \quad |\sigma_t| \leq \kappa, \quad \sigma_t \cdot u_t+\kappa |u_t| = 0 \] where \( u_n \) and \( u_t \) are the normal and tangential components of the velocity field respectively, \(\sigma_t\) is the shear stress, and \(\kappa\) is the friction threshold. ### Methods and results: - **Mixed variational form**: The author transforms the problem into a mixed variational form and uses Lagrange multipliers to enforce the boundary conditions. - **Stabilization techniques**: By introducing additional residual terms in the variational form, bypassing the Babuška - Brezzi condition, simultaneous stabilization of pressure and traction is achieved. - **Numerical experiments**: The experimental results show that this method can effectively converge on different meshes and can also obtain relatively good numerical results in the lowest - order case. ### Conclusion: The author successfully proposes and verifies a stabilized finite element method for solving the Stokes flow problem with nonlinear slip boundary conditions. This method not only has good theoretical stability and error estimates but also performs well in practical applications.
