Abstract:Italian operas can provide relevant information on the medical knowledge during the Romantic Age, especially in the field of neuroscience. One of the most renowned operas, "Nabucco" by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) may provide us with some information on the state of knowledge on neuropsychiatric diseases in the first part of the nineteenth century. The main character of this opera, the Assyrian king Nabucco suffers from delirium. Psychic signs and symptoms attributed to Nabucco in Verdi's opera could have been influenced by a better knowledge of neuropsychiatric diseases in the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the representation of Nabucco's mental illness in the opera could also have been influenced by direct experiences of Verdi himself, who seems to have suffered from recurrent depressive episodes in that period, and for the rest of his life.

Abstract:Opera is the most complete form of theatrical representation, characterized by musical accompaniment, both instrumental and vocal. It has played an important role in sociocultural spheres, affecting the various social strata and reflecting customs and ideas in different centuries. Composers have created pieces that have also shown the development of medicine. Since the birth of opera in seventeenth century in Italy, neuroscience has played an important role in influencing the representation of madness and neurological aspects. From the Folly of the Renaissance, a path toward a representation of madness was developed, initially linked to the myths of classical antiquity. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, madness was represented as comical or funny, of a loving nature and influenced by the spread of the Commedia dell'Arte (Comedy of Art). In the nineteenth century, with the rise of the first scientific theories of the mind, insanity took more precise connotations and was separated from other psychiatric and neurological diseases. The operas of the twentieth century depicted psychiatric and neurological diseases, taking into account newer medical and scientific discoveries.
'Il Sonnambulo' by Michele Carafa: A Forgotten Romantic Opera with Sleepwalking

Abstract:Romantic operas provide a useful tool for historians to understand the perception of some medical disorders that existed during the nineteenth century. Somnambulism was still a mysterious condition during this time, since its pathogenesis was unknown. Hence, it comes as no surprise that somnambulism features in a number of operas, the best known of which are Verdi's 'Macbeth' and Bellini's 'La Sonnambula', both the subject of recent scholarship. Here we examine a more obscure opera in which sleepwalking is depicted. Dating from 1824, 'Il Sonnambulo' by the Italian composer Michele Carafa is based on a libretto by Felice Romani. Although it shares some features with the Verdi and Bellini operas, it also presents original elements. Our analysis of this forgotten opera supports the contention that studying operas can shed light on medical theories and practices, and on how ideas about mind and body disorders were transmitted to the laity in times past.
The effect of nurse staffing on clinical outcomes of children in hospital: a systematic review.

Abstract:AIM The aim of the present study was to identify any association between nurse staffing and clinical outcomes in hospitalised children. INCLUSION CRITERIA Quantitative studies that evaluated the effect of nurse staffing on clinical outcomes of hospitalised children aged from 0-18 years. Measures of nurse staffing included nursing hours per patient day, nurse-to-patient ratio, skill mix and nurse characteristics such as level of education and years of experience. The clinical outcomes were those believed to be potentially sensitive to nursing care. Specifically, where the provision, or lack, of competent nursing care have made a difference to the outcome for the child (a nursing-sensitive outcome). Examples included mortality, healthcare-associated infections, failure to rescue, medication administration errors, postoperative complications and pressure ulcers. SEARCH STRATEGY The search strategy aimed to find published and unpublished studies written in English between 1993 and 2010. Following an initial search of the Cochrane and Joanna Briggs Institute Libraries of Systematic Reviews, a three-step search strategy was utilised. First, a limited search of MEDLINE and CINAHL using keywords was undertaken and the words contained in the titles, abstracts and the index terms used to describe each article were analysed. A second search using all identified keywords and index terms was done. Third, the reference lists of all identified reports and articles were searched for additional relevant studies. METHODOLOGICAL QUALITY Using the critical appraisal instrument from the Joanna Briggs Institute, each article was assessed by two independent reviewers for methodological quality before inclusion. RESULTS Eight studies were included of which six were cohort, one case-control and one cross-sectional. Comparison across studies was limited as few clinical outcomes were the same; similarly there was a lack of consistency in the measures of nurse staffing. Fourteen different healthcare-associated infections and ten further clinical outcomes, of which eight were adverse events, were reported. Predictor variables were 10 different definitions of nurse staffing. Measures of Registered Nurse staffing were used most frequently. Increased Registered Nurse nursing hours per patient day was associated with decreases in eight adverse events. Similarly, higher Registered Nurse skill mix contributed positively to three clinical outcomes in children. However, there appears to be a level where increasing Registered Nurse hours no longer has a significant effect on decreasing adverse events. Results reporting association between children's outcomes and casual/agency nurses are equivocal. CONCLUSIONS There is evidence that levels of nurse staffing are associated with clinical outcomes of children. Standardisation of nurse-sensitive indicators and measures of nurse staffing will enable empirical research. Further research to find the levels of Registered Nurse hours per patient day and proportion of Registered Nurse in the skill mix that maximises children's clinical outcomes is still required.
Somnambulism in Verdi's Macbeth and Bellini's La Sonnambula: opera, sleepwalking, and medicine

Abstract:The arts can provide unique ways for determining how people not directly involved in medicine were viewing and informing others about physical and mental disorders. With operas, one need only think about how various perturbations of madness have been portrayed. Somnambulism has long been a particularly perplexing disorder, both to physicians and the laity, and it features in a number of operas. Two mid-nineteenth-century masterpieces are examined in detail in this contribution: Verdi's Macbeth and Bellini's La Sonnambula. In the former, the sleepwalking scene is faithful to what Shakespeare's had written early in the seventeenth century, a time of witchcraft, superstition, and the belief that nocturnal wanderings might be caused by guilt. In Bellini's opera, in contrast, the victim is an innocent girl who suffers from a quirk of nature, hence eliciting sympathy and compassion. By examining the early literature on somnambulism and comparing this disorder in these operas, we can see how thinking about this condition has changed and, more generally, how music was helping to generate new ways of thinking about specific diseases and medicine.

Abstract:The origins of castration can be traced back to the times of Classical Mythology. THe reasons for this kind of operation were extremely varied.Up into the 20th century it was performed as punishment and revenge upon conquered enemies, on religious grounds and for acquiring slaves and harem guards. THere are very few diseases to date giving rise to a medical indication for castration. According to the excessively strict interpretation of the words of St. Paul that "women should remain silent in Church", women were not permitted to participate in signing for several voices in the church. The high-pitched voices of young boys were therefore adopted, whose skill no longer met the continuously rising demands placed upon singers. The vocal performance of men signing in the falsetto registers ("falsettos") progressively failed to suffice in church singing and even more so in the opera, which started to become established as a new art form towards the end of the 16th century. Young boys' voices and flasettos were therefore gradually replaced by singing castratos. The "heyday" of this type of singing was in the 18th century and one of its best known representatives was Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli. THe high pitches and aria di bravura corresponded to the taste of the audiences. In the 19th century the demand for castratos declined. One of the last was Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922), who sang for over 30 years in the Sistine Chapel, in later years mainly conducting. According to present-day knowledge, he is the only castrato of whom several recordings were made between 1902 and 1904. They were published on a record, now available as a CD.

Abstract:Background: Madness served primarily as a form of amusement for the spectators in operas of the seventeenth century. This representation was far removed from clinical reality. This circumstance changed in the eighteenth century at the time when tragic madness emerged in numerous operas. Material and methods: The opera buffa Arcifanfano-Re dei matti (Arcifanfano-King of fools, premiered in 1749 in Venice, text by Carlo Goldoni 1707-1793 and music by Baldassare Galuppi 1706-1785), which continuously enacts a realm of fools and is meant to appear amusing, is riddled with psychopathological abnormalities for which a retrospective diagnosis is methodologically rejected. However, the opera presents many subjects for working out a typology of fools based on outlasting personality traits of the protagonists. The libretto is investigated. A musical analysis is spared. Results: The conceptualized typology of fools in the opera, which is oriented towards the seven main vices or deadly sins serves, in the tradition of moral satire, to critically hold up a mirror to the audience to reflect their own vices by an amusing characterization of the latter. Historically classified, the treatment of fools by means of isolation, custody, locking up in cages as well as authoritarian measures of submission reflects the custom in those days before humanizing the treatment of people with mental illness in the course of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Conclusion: The opera Arcifanfano is essentially characterized by continuous madness. A typology of the fools can be worked out from the precise depiction of the personalities. A mirror is held up to the spectators in terms of vices, in the tradition of the contemporary baroque opera. At the same time, the opera can be classified psychiatrically and historically as a seismograph of its time when in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries people with mental illness were isolated and incarcerated.

Abstract:Statement of the problem. Undoubtedly, the operas by G. Rossini, G. Verdi, F. Halévy, and G. Meyerbeer, which appeared in the Romantic era, belong to secular culture. However, all of them, in one way or another, used plots and motifs from the religious experience of people, delineating the image of a man of faith (Homo Credens) as a cross-cutting theme of art, the “crossing point” of the secular and religious worlds. Therefore, researchers and performers of opera music face the problem of understanding the religious and spiritual component of the opera genre through the assimilation of the imagery and plot specificity and genre symbolism of the musical language, which goes back to Christian services. The identification of Christian influences helps to understand the depth of the spiritual content of the opera work, through musical symbolism to feel the religious and ethical “resonances” of the existence of a new European person who makes sense of his history, which is inseparable from Christian culture. This makes it possible to reproduce both the objective factors of the Christian worldview embedded in the plot, as well as the hidden meanings of the spiritual content of the opera work, its musical and linguistic resources. Objectives, methods, and novelty of the research. The purpose of the article is to trace the connections between the vocal and stage images of romantic opera with Christian religious themes, the interpretation of which is often a performance problem for modern artists-vocalists. The performance aspect of the problem of the presence of Christian content in opera works has not yet come under the “focus” of the researchers of this topic. The attempt to reveal Christian influences on the vocal and scenic images of opera works in this article is carried out on the platform of spiritual-semantic analysis (Aleksandrova, 2018) of genre and stylistic specificity of the operas by G. Rossini, G. Verdi, F. Halévy, and G. Meyerbeer. Results and conclusion. The opera works of Western European composers of the 19th century demonstrate the constant presence of images related to the Christian religious tradition, in particular biblical ones. This is the introducing of characters that are connected to Church life, or plot lines and motifs that unfold against the background of Christian history. In G. Rossini’s opera “Moses in Egypt” we meet the case of the most complete approximation of the libretto to the story from the Old Testament. A sign of the presence of Christian imagery in the semantic range of a secular opera work is the prayer genre represented by arias or choruses. Observations on the embodiment of religious themes (plot motifs that go back to Christian history, characters of personages related to church life, ideas and symbols of Christianity, genre semantics, interpretation of iconic figures by famous singers F. Furlanetto and R. Raimondi) in the operas of the Romantic era led us to certain conclusions about the specifics of vocal-stage reproduction of figurativeness of the Christian tradition. ● Vocal intonation is derived from the way of thinking and worldview. Therefore, due attention to the performer’s understanding of Christian imagery and plot is important for the correct use of vocal and stage techniques that contribute to an adequate interpretation of the image and the work as a whole. ● If the artist’s interpretation of the vocal and stage image corresponds to the spiritual and religious content of the work, then in this case it embodies and presents to the viewer certain aspects of the spiritual ideal – the Christian image of a person, Homo Credens. Therefore, revealing the connections between opera as a secular genre and the Christian value system on the basis of the spiritual-semantic analysis of the opera image contributes to the self-improvement of performers, the growth of their spiritual maturity, general erudition and culture.

Looking through opera librettos and director's productions the author makes conclusions about characteristic human health problems, treatment methods used and the social status of doctors. About 10 percent of the four hundred opera and ballet productions performed today include doctor characters. These characters differ significantly from each other, depending on the time of creation of the work or the era reflected in the plot.

Abstract:Statement of the problem. Among the questions that arise, let us single out those that will form the basis of the proposed article devoted to women’s parts in the opera “Rodelinda”: HIP traditions and staging strategies; vocal roles and their possible modifications / transformations under the conditions of specific directing and performing solutions. Analysis of recent scientific publications shows that ‘Handeliana’ is currently very voluminous. Thus, the works of W. Dean (1969), J. Knapp (2009) and C. Hogwood (2007), which have been republished several times, are considered thoroughly; L. Silke (2014) summarized the experience of predecessors and presented new dimensions of scientific understanding of Handel’s legacy. Fundamental are the studies by L. Kirillina (2019). The problem of performing vocal music of the Baroque era has been actively discussed in the works of I. Fedoseev (1996), N. Harnoncourt (2002), G. Kaganov (2013), M. Burden (2009), A. Jones (2006), О. Kruglova (2007), G. Konson & I. Konson (2020). The purpose of the article is to single out the main parameters of the baroque performance of women’s parts in G.F. Handel’s opera “Rodelinda” taking into account the performing traditions and modern trends. The research methodology is focused on the concept of “authentic performing strategy” (Yu. Nikolaievska, 2020), positions of comparative interpretology (Ch. Zhiwei, 2012) and interpretative approach, aimed at studying the specifics of the performance versions. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the application of an interpretive approach to the study of G. F. Handel’s operas. Results. In the 1938 recording (conducted by G. Leonhard), Rodelinda was performed by the famous Cecile Reich, in 1959, 1973 – by Joan Sutherland (in London and Netherlands productions). Closer to the authentic versions is the one performed by Sophie Danneman (1996); there is also a famous recording of 2005 with Rene Fleming (Metropolitan Opera), who was brilliant as an actress (which is required by the plot), but she admired and “played” her voice a little, which does not quite correspond to the principles of authenticity. One of the stars of the Glyndebourne Festival (1998) was the performer of Rodelinda’s part – Anna Caterina Antonacci, who performed her part with the necessary psychological and vocal accents, but, perhaps, somewhat dry and removed, which is why the listener is also removed from the heroine’s tragedy. In 2011 N. Harnoncourt recorded “Rodelinda” (in the title role – Danielle de Niese, who owns the entire arsenal of means inherent in baroque performance). Lauren Woods (recording of the 2016) is one of the most famous performers of the baroque repertoire. Critics have noted her perfect articulation, acting ability and “impressive vocals”. Simone Kermes, who critics call “the mad queen of the Baroque”, is distinguished by bright and temperamental performance, especially incomparable in the interpretation of baroque operas. Conclusions. From the interpretive point of view, mastering the expressive system of Baroque vocal performance traditions, in particular the art of vocal improvisation and ornamentation, consistent with the artistic context and directorial decision, can broadcast for the modern listener the affects and meanings of Handel’s music. The established features of baroque style are marked (affect, which is usually concentrated in such positions as tempo-rhythm, tonality, text, syntax of the melody) and performance (timbre, dynamics, intonation of the melodic line, ornamentation). Rodelinda’s part has been shown to require the ability to switch from one affect to another fairly quickly. In the analyzed interpretations, modern singers (D. de Nies, J. Sutherland, S. Kermez, L. Woods, A. K. Antonacci) practically do not allow themselves to be free, but seek to follow the principles of authentic performance, which is manifested in dynamic, agogic elements, various timbre colors arias (aria of revenge, duet-consent, aria of lamento), the ability to improvise.
“Rigoletto”: Variety of Screen Forms and Specifics of Staging Solutions for Classical Opera in Cinema and on Television

Abstract:In domestic science there is a perception that today’s opera, under the pressure of massification, simultaneously tries to preserve the elusive traditions of “high” art and lowers the bar to the level of mass culture, while the availability of technological possibilities of transferring opera to the screen is not able to change the preferences of the mass audience, unable to perceive it adequately. It cannot be denied that in the 21st century an uninitiated mass audience’s perception of classical opera is largely formed on the basis of screen representations of musical drama. In this context, the analysis of the applied staging solutions in cinema and television in the incarnation of opera, which includes the determination of the components that are necessary for the qualitative screen representation of musical drama, becomes a relevant subject for scientific research. In this article, which is dedicated to 170th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, an attempt is made to analyze four screen forms of one musical drama different from each other with the aim to reveal variability of staging solutions used for the realization of classical opera on TV and in cinema. The specific features of cinematographic and television representation of musical drama influencing the actualization and popularization of opera in the modern screen space are revealed within different genre frames (film-opera, TV version of musical drama, live TV film, musical TV contest). The author identifies the central figure in the latter processes the director-director, a professional in the field of television, who understands the fundamental laws and staging techniques of musical theater, the expressive means of cinematography.

Abstract:The article explores the paradoxes of using literary sources in opera: literary works, myths and fairy tales, legends and traditions. Among these stories, the author focuses on the theme of the femme fatale, associated with the motif of seduction and the final catastrophe that ends her life story. The theme of the femme fatale is considered in the context of gender issues, the relationship between the male and female worlds. The research is based on the principles of historical poetics. The author analyses the origins of plot motifs, their development in time, the combination of motifs in connection with the system of characters, external and internal motives of their behavior, and, in general, the artistic structure of the work. The analysis of the plots in terms of the existence of common motifs in them and their place in the integral plot structure is based on the operas by composers of different ages. The article first examines the works of Jean-Baptiste Lully, Georg Friedrich Händel, Antonín Dvořák, Georges Bizet, Richard Wagner, and Alban Berg in terms of the common motifs and their place in the integral plot structure. This makes it possible to reveal non-linear connections between opera works belonging to different historical epochs, different genres, and national traditions.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to analyse the productions of the 21st century musical and theatrical works of the 19th – 20th centuries in the aspect of postmodernism and baroque. The methodology of the work includes scientific methods (source studies, historical, generalising) and methods of comparative analysis to reveal the specifics of postmodern performances. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that sources in foreign languages have been introduced into scientific circulation, and an analysis of musical and theatrical works has been carried out. Conclusions. It is noted that at all times the opera remains a musical-dramatic performance with a synthesis of arts that affect human feelings and immerse in audiovisual art. Postmodern music and theatre creativity, as well as baroque art, are aimed at evoking affects (states of mind) through various influences. In postmodernism, this is already the systemic influence of singing, dancing, modern technologies with the immersion of the audience in the action and plot complications, which also contribute to the transmission of various affective states. In the Baroque era, the composer was not considered an original genius, and their creativity and works were not untouched. The performer was allowed to interpret the written text. Postmodern period plays are characterised by: changing the libretto (E. Humperdinck’s "Hansel and Gretel" ("Jeníček a Mařenka", 1890, 2015); A. Dvořák’s "The Devil and Káča" ("Čert a Káča", 1899, 2016); "A soldier and a dancer". According to the functional sphere and the city of performance, parts of the work could be omitted or replaced. Actually, what we observe today, in the art of postmodernism is a reinterpretation of the heroes and their functions (Hansel and Gretel are not just poor children, but circus students, where the father is a director). Features of domestic comedy, fairy tale – in baroque opera were complemented by masks and tragic events. In post-modern performances, masks are replaced by puppets, for example, in the operas of B. Martin "The Soldier and the Dancer", E. Humperdinck "Hansel and Gretel", A. Dvořák "The Devil and the Duck". A parallel with the French baroque opera-ballet in the works of postmodernism is the strengthening of the role of dance in opera performances ("The Devil and Kacha", ballet with singing by B. Martin "Spalicek"). Plots with real and fairy-tale-fantasy characters, which are similar to the "myth" ("Hansel and Gretel", "The Devil and the Duck"). The external spectacularity and scale in Baroque works resonate with the specific stage design: inn, hell, palace ("Devil and Kacha"); animation of the middle of the 20th century – Disney pictures ("Hansel and Gretel"); the image of the Soldier – the world of dreams – childhood with dolls – a machine with dolls ("The Soldier and the Dancer"). Abstract:Victor Hugo's Notre‐Dame de Paris (1831) was translated for English readers as The Hunchback of Notre‐Dame in 1833. One year later, Quasimodo, Esmeralda, Frollo, and the rest of Hugo's cast of characters appeared in London theaters. This article is the first to discuss three nineteenth‐century English stage adaptations of Hugo's novel: two adaptations penned by dramatist Edward Fitzball – Esmeralda; or, The Deformed of Notre Dame (1834) and Quasimodo; or, The Gipsey Girl of Notre Dame (1836) – as well as Andrew Halliday's Notre‐Dame; or, The Gypsey Girl of Paris (1871). These adaptations rewrote Hugo's historical romance into domestic dramas that eschewed the novel's tragic ending in favor of a happy ending. They also erased Hugo's political commentary and social critiques from the drama. Overall, the essay demonstrates that although these changes kept Hugo's story in mass circulation for almost two centuries, they have done so at the expense of the novel's republican politics and social commentary.

Venice and Opera in the 18th Century

Abstract:The author of the article disputes the established opinion according to which the great tradition of 17th century Venetian opera lost its significance in the European musical theater a century later. Emphasis is made of the vanguard role of opera in Venice in the first half of the 18th century, which has been marked by a set of phenomena. They include: the birth of heroic opera, the base of which was the Teatro San Govanni Crisostomo; the stake on virtuoso singers made by the Teatro San Cassiano; the productions of comic intermezzi initiated by the Teatro Can Cassiano; and the creation of the genre of opera buffa with the participation of the great Venetian comic dramatist Carlo Goldoni. A number of reasons that stipulated the leading role of Venice in the history of the development of opera is highlighted. They are connected with the emergence of accessible music theaters, which became magnets for the general public and which provided for a flourishing of the art of the theater; with the creation of a specific artistic milieu that exerted an influence on the art of decoration. A considerable amount of contribution in the creation of the fertile ground for the development of opera in Venice was made by the theatrical element, which determined the ways of living of the city dwellers and the out-of-town visitors during the period of the carnival, as well as the Venetian academies, the walls of which held unfolding disputes about opera. The intensive development of Venetian opera in the 18th century was also enhanced by the preparation of singers who mastered the new style of vocal performance.

Abstract:Opera is a complex musical form that reflects the complexity of the human condition and the human brain. This article presents an introduction to the portrayal of medical professionals in opera, including one neurologist, as well as two characters in whom neurological disease contributes to the action of the musical drama. Consideration is also given to the neuroanatomy and neuropathology of opera singers with further speculation regarding the neural underpinnings of the passion of opera's audience.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to trail regularities of vocal evolution which has formed the transition of stage operatic development from Rossini to Verdi and which has predetermined the performing tradition of Lucia‘s role in Donizetti’s opera “Lucia Lammermoor “(1835) by light coloratura soprano in the second half of XIX century until the present day. The methodology of the study is based on the intonation approach to interaction of music and spoken word in B. Asafiev”s school in Ukraine and which corresponds to the trend of hermeneutics research of the musicology study, as offered in works of L. Zima, E. Markova, A. Roshchenko. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by originality of historical approach to vocal intonation change which has been given birth by Italian romanticism in its dissociation from the R. Wagner approach and which has been accepted as leading approach in operatic performing tradition. This concept coincides with the author's independent analysis of the main heroine in Donizetti’s opera. Conclusion. The role of Lucia in Donizetti‘s opera with its particular style of libretto and manifestation of both femininity and outstanding power resulting in madness forms the parallel to preceding operatic images of hers as well as contemporary images in the days of Donizetti. The composer’s approach to F. Takkinardi-Persiani’s interpretation of this role, however, points to a presentiment of the replacement of "Rossini" soprano by lyrical coloratura in the operas of Gounod. Still this replacement drove the performing of the dramatic role of Lucia by "light" coloratura sopranos - from A. Patti to A. Galli-Kurci, from A. Nezhdanova to E. Miroshnichenko and last not least author of the essay in reference. It is sincerity and faithfulness to the beloved one rather than power of nature which determine the core values of Lucia, forming an analogy to heroines in psychodramas of V. Rebikov, whose genius as a treasure of the Ukraine South became a discovery at the musical theater nowadays. As a consequence ” Lucia di Lammermoor” continuously occupies a significant place in the repertoire of Ukrainian opera houses.
