Abstract:The prompt and in-situ assessment of non-gamma ray emitting radionuclides such as Sr-90 remains an outstanding challenge, particularly in radiological emergency response and consequence management situations. We have developed a new concept to quantitatively assess a wide range of radionuclides, including beta-only emitters, using coplanar-grid CdZnTe detectors that provide depth-of-interaction sensing. By combining measurements with and without an electron absorber, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting and identifying Sr-90 and other radionuclides with a sensitivity of about 1 $\mu$Ci/m$^2$ or 3.7x10$^4$ Bq/m$^2$, which is 10\% of the Derived Response Level, in less than 60 minutes. The new compact instrument can be used in the field or mobile laboratories to quickly assess a wide range of samples with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to provide critical guidance in the response after radiological incidents.

Production of Medical Radioisotopes with High Specific Activity in Photonuclear Reactions with $γ$ Beams of High Intensity and Large Brilliance

Abstract:We study the production of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine in $(\gamma,x{\rm n}+y{\rm p})$ photonuclear reactions or ($\gamma,\gamma'$) photoexcitation reactions with high flux [($10^{13}-10^{15}$)$\gamma$/s], small diameter $\sim (100 \, \mu$m$)^2$ and small band width ($\Delta E/E \approx 10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) $\gamma$ beams produced by Compton back-scattering of laser light from relativistic brilliant electron beams. We compare them to (ion,$x$n$ + y$p) reactions with (ion=p,d,$\alpha$) from particle accelerators like cyclotrons and (n,$\gamma$) or (n,f) reactions from nuclear reactors. For photonuclear reactions with a narrow $\gamma$ beam the energy deposition in the target can be managed by using a stack of thin target foils or wires, hence avoiding direct stopping of the Compton and pair electrons (positrons). $(\gamma,\gamma')$ isomer production via specially selected $\gamma$ cascades allows to produce high specific activity in multiple excitations, where no back-pumping of the isomer to the ground state occurs. We discuss in detail many specific radioisotopes for diagnostics and therapy applications. Photonuclear reactions with $\gamma$ beams allow to produce certain radioisotopes, e.g. $^{47}$Sc, $^{44}$Ti, $^{67}$Cu, $^{103}$Pd, $^{117m}$Sn, $^{169}$Er, $^{195m}$Pt or $^{225}$Ac, with higher specific activity and/or more economically than with classical methods. This will open the way for completely new clinical applications of radioisotopes. For example $^{195m}$Pt could be used to verify the patient's response to chemotherapy with platinum compounds before a complete treatment is performed. Also innovative isotopes like $^{47}$Sc, $^{67}$Cu and $^{225}$Ac could be produced for the first time in sufficient quantities for large-scale application in targeted radionuclide therapy.

Abstract:The application of a high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometer in determining the fuel element burnup in a future reactor is studied. The HPGe detector is exposed by a Co60 source with varying irradiation rate from 10 kcps to 150 kcps to simulate the input counting rate in real reactor environment. A Cs137 and a Eu152 source are positioned at given distances to generate certain event rate in the detector with the former being proposed as a labeling nuclide to measure the burnup of fuel element. It is shown that both the energy resolution slightly increasing with the irradiation rate and the passthrough rate at high irradiation level match the requirement of the real application. The influence of the background is studied in different parameter sets used in the particularly developed procedure of the background subtraction. It is demonstrated that with the typical input irradiation rate and Cs137 intensity relevant to deep burnup situation, the precision of the Cs137 counting rate in the current experiment is consistently below 2.8%, indicating a promising feasibility of utilizing an HPGe detector in the burnup measurement in future bed-like reactor.

A plastic scintillator and HPGe β-γ coincidence detection system

Abstract:A network of specialist laboratories support the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) with re-measurements of radionuclide samples, including xenon gas. The measurement of four xenon fission product radionuclides (133Xe, 135Xe, 131mXe and 133mXe) can be used to detect an underground nuclear explosion. Laboratories use a range of techniques to measure the radionuclides, including beta-gamma (β-γ) coincidence spectrometry. These highly-sensitive measurements are capable of detecting concentrations of down to 500 atoms of 133Xe in a few cm3 of xenon. In some detector systems, detection of the metastable isomers (131mXe and 133mXe) can be more challenging due to interferences between the signatures of different radionuclides. Recent work has shown that using high-purity Germanium (HPGe) high-resolution gamma detectors, these interferences can be reduced, lowering the dependence of the detection limits on radionuclide sample isotopic composition. One downside of these detectors is the reduction in detection efficiency, which impacts the overall detection sensitivity; so assessing different detector systems is a priority for radionuclide laboratories. This work presents a coincidence detector system comprising of a plastic scintillator gas cell and a large-crystal high-purity germanium detector. The energy resolution, coincidence detection efficiency, MDA and interference factors are determined from measurements of synthetic radioxenon gas samples.
Activity estimates of localized gamma emitting radionuclides using a GR-135 survey meter

Abstract:During the operation of high energy accelerators activated materials are commonly created. The activity and isotopes present in these materials must be characterized for their clearance and release from the facility, or to ascertain their duration of stay in a radiological storage area. An activity estimate method using a gamma detecting GR-135 survey meter, which has the ability to collect an energy spectrum, is presented. Using several reference radioactive sources the detection efficiency and dead time of the survey meter were characterized. This information combined with the physical properties of the survey meter, the counting time, and the properties of the measured photon energy emissions can be used to calculate an accurate activity estimate for localized activation on accelerator components, or loose contamination on isolated waste materials.

Abstract:Passive detection of special nuclear material (SNM) is challenging due to its inherently low rate of spontaneous emission of penetrating radiation, the relative ease of shielding, and the fluctuating and frequently overwhelming background. Active interrogation, the use of external radiation to increase the emission rate of characteristic radiation from SNM, has long been considered to be a promising method to overcome those challenges. Current active-interrogation systems that incorporate radiography tend to use bremsstrahlung beams, which can deliver high radiation doses. Low-energy ion-driven nuclear reactions that produce multiple monoenergetic photons may be used as an alternative. The C-12(p, p')C-12 reaction is one such reaction that could produce large yields of highly penetrating 4.4- and 15.1-MeV gamma rays. This reaction does not directly produce neutrons below the approximately 19.7 MeV threshold, and the 15.1-MeV gamma-ray line is well matched to the photofission cross section of U-235 and U-238. We report the measurements of thick-target gamma-ray yields at 4.4 and 15.1 MeV from the C-12(p, p')C-12 reaction at proton energies of 19.5, 25, and 30 MeV. Measurements are made with two 3-in. EJ-309 cylindrical liquid scintillation detectors and thermoluminescent dosimeters placed at 0 degrees and 90 degrees, with an additional 1.5-in. NaI(Tl) cylindrical scintillation detector at 0 degrees. We estimate the highest yields of the 4.4- and 15.1-MeV gamma rays of 1.65 x 10(-10) and 4.47 x 10(8) sr(-1)mu C-1 at a proton energy of 30 MeV, respectively. The yields in all experimental configurations are greater than in a comparable deuteron-driven reaction that produces the same gamma-ray energies B-11(d,n gamma)(12)c. However, a significant increase of the neutron radiation dose accompanies the proton energy increase from 19.5 to 30 MeV.

Abstract:Radiation technologies based on the use of powerful electron beams and gamma radiation are closely related to the need for dosimetry of these beams. Dosimetry based on the use of the inelastic gamma-ray scattering reaction on a number of nuclei with the formation of isomers with different half-lives and energies of radiation quanta is very successful for these purposes. An example of this application in dosimetry is the 115In (γ,γ')115mIn reaction, which results in the formation of the 115mIn isomer, having a gamma line with an energy of 336.24 keV and a half-life of 4.5 hours. There was a successful application of this technique in dosimetry in solving certain practical problems (irradiation complexes based on 60Co source- cobalt “guns”). In this work, it is shown that the use of In detectors for dosimetry of gamma-radiation with a wide energy spectrum (bremsstrahlung) is associated with significant uncertainty in measuring the equivalent dose of the gamma spectrum with an upper limit of 10 MeV. This uncertainty is due to the relatively high threshold of the aforementioned reaction of 1.08 MeV. The quantitative contribution to the total radiation flux of the region of the gamma spectrum below the threshold (γ,γ') of the reaction on the In nucleus was determined and it was shown that, depending on the direction of radiation, there is an systematic error in measuring the equivalent dose, reaching 20-60%. Investigated and proposed for use alternative materials detectors, allowing reducing the systematic error in measuring the equivalent dose to 2-3%, which is quite acceptable for practical use.

Abstract:The study of neutrinoless double beta decay has attracted much attention as it can provide valuable information about the mass and the nature of the neutrino. The double beta decay (DBD) itself is also of interest in nuclear physics. While DBD has been observed in about a dozen nuclei, the positron double beta decay ($\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$/EC-$\beta^{+}$) continues to be an elusive. An important signature for $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ decay is the simultaneous emission of four 511 keV gamma rays and the coincident detection of these gamma rays can improve the measurement sensitivity. This paper presents an estimation of sensitivity for EC-$\beta^{+}$ and $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ employing coincidence measurement with two high purity Ge (HPGe) detectors. Simulations for coincident detection efficiency (${\epsilon}_c$) of 511 keV gamma rays with two HPGe detectors have been carried out using GEANT4 for different source geometries to optimize the mass efficiency product (M${\epsilon}_c$). The source of size $55\,mm \times 55\,mm \times 5\,mm$ (thickness) sandwiched between the front faces of the detectors were found to be optimal for 2 pairs of 511 keV gamma rays in the present detector setup. The coincident background is estimated at the sea level with moderate Pb shielding. With this setup, the sensitivity for T$_{1/2}$ measurement of EC-$\beta^{+}$ in $^{112}$Sn and $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ in $^{106}$Cd is estimated to be $\sim$10$^{19}$ - 10$^{20}$ y for 1y of measurement time.

Pulse shape analysis of scintillation signals from pure and xenon-doped liquid argon for radioactive background identification

Abstract:The response of a 19 kg active mass liquid argon scintillation detector to gamma, alpha and neutron radiation and its characteristic scintillation photon time distribution has been studied in the framework of the Gerda double beta decay research and development program. The achieved photo-electron yield of 1.24 pe/keV was stable during the two years of operation. The detector exhibits excellent energy resolution of 8.7/17.2 keV (σ) for gamma energies of 60/239 keV. Radon was loaded into the liquid argon to study alpha energy quenching and decay time correlation of its progenies. A robust pulse shape analysis method was used to identify and discriminate amongst the different radiation types. 60 keV gamma signals could be discriminated against neutron recoils of the same visible energy with a miss-identification probability of < 5 · 10−4 limited by statistics and ambient backgrounds. Xenon doping of liquid argon increased the photo-electron yield and improved the spectroscopic performance of the detector leading to an energy resolution of 7.2/15.4 keV (σ) for 60/239 keV. The discrimination power improved slightly with the addition of xenon up to concentrations of 300 ppm. Applications for background identification and discrimination in double beta decay search with 76Ge crystals, as well as for Dark Matter search with liquid argon are discussed.

A technique to quantify very low activities in regions of interest with a collimatorless detector

Abstract:We present a new method to measure sub-microcurie activities of photon-emitting radionuclides in organs and lesions of small animals in vivo. Our technique, named the collimator-less likelihood fit, combines a very high sensitivity collimatorless detector with a Monte Carlo-based likelihood fit in order to estimate the activities in previously segmented regions of interest along with their uncertainties. This is done directly from the photon projections in our collimatorless detector and from the region of interest segmentation provided by an x-ray computed tomography scan. We have extensively validated our approach with 225Ac experimentally in spherical phantoms and mouse phantoms, and also numerically with simulations of a realistic mouse anatomy. Our method yields statistically unbiased results with uncertainties smaller than 20% for activities as low as ~111 Bq (3 nCi) and for exposures under 30 minutes. We demonstrate that our method yields more robust recovery coefficients when compared to SPECT imaging with a commercial pre-clinical scanner, specially at very low activities. Thus, our technique is complementary to traditional SPECT/CT imaging since it provides a more accurate and precise organ and tumor dosimetry, with a more limited spatial information. Finally, our technique is specially significant in extremely low-activity scenarios when SPECT/CT imaging is simply not viable.

Maximum Likelihood Spectrum Decomposition for Isotope Identification and Quantification

Abstract:A spectral decomposition method has been implemented to identify and quantify isotopic source terms in high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy in static geometry and shielding scenarios. Monte-Carlo simulations were used to build the response matrix of a shielded high purity germanium detector monitoring an effluent stream with a Marinelli configuration. The decomposition technique was applied to a series of calibration spectra taken with the detector using a multi-nuclide standard. These results are compared to decay corrected values from the calibration certificate. For most nuclei in the standard ($^{241}$Am, $^{109}$Cd, $^{137}$Cs, and $^{60}$Co) the deviations from the certificate values were generally no more than $6$\% with a few outliers as high as $10$\%. For $^{57}$Co, the radionuclide with the lowest activity, the deviations from the standard reached as high as $25$\%, driven by the meager statistics in the calibration spectra. Additionally, a complete treatment of error propagation for the technique is presented.

Offline imaging of positron emitters induced by therapeutic helium, carbon and oxygen ion beams with a full-ring PET/CT scanner: experiments in reference targets

Abstract:In vivo verification of light ion therapy based on positron-emission tomography (PET) imaging of irradiation induced patient activation relies on activity predictions from Monte-Carlo (MC) or analytical computational engines for comparison to the measurements. In order to achieve the necessary accuracy, experimental data are indispensable for the validation of the calculation models. For this we irradiated thick reference targets with mono-energetic helium, carbon and oxygen ion beams and measured the resulting material activation offline with a commercial full-ring PET/CT scanner located nearby the treatment room. Acquired PET data were analysed over time to separate the activity contribution of different radionuclides. Determined production yields were compared to published findings obtained from in-beam activation measurements with a limited-angle double-head PET camera. In addition, we investigated the time-dependence of the measured radionuclide-specific contributions and of the distal activity range, as well as the lateral spread of the activity signal as a function of beam penetration depth. We present radionuclide-specific depth-resolved activity distributions and production yields for the radionuclides [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], dominating irradiation-induced patient activation. We observe systematically lower production yields with a ratio between the dual-head and our full-ring PET measurements of, on average, 1.7 and 1.3 for the oxygen and carbon beam irradiations, and 1.7 (2.1) for the high (low) energy helium beam irradiations. Findings on the temporal development of the activity range confirm the expectation, with the oxygen beam induced signal being the most sensitive scenario. The experimental data reported in this work, acquired with a state-of-the-art full ring PET scanner, provide a comprehensive and consistent basis for the benchmarking of PET signal calculation engines. In particular, they can support a fine-tuning of the underlying physics models used by the respective implementation and therefore improve the accuracy of PET-based therapy verifications at current and future treatment facilities.

Abstract:In the following work we present a method for evaluating α and β indices intended for monitoring radionuclide contamination. For this purpose we used the novel μDOSE system calibrated for 3.00 g samples. Measurements were conducted for selected IAEA reference materials and for samples provided by the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB) Katowice, Poland.We found that the proposed method provides α and β indices values that exhibit good linearity relative to α and β count rates. Moreover, we present β index values for three arbitrarily chosen energy thresholds: 0, 150 and 300 keV. The results of our research show that the proposed method is effective and is a good alternative to LSC for α and β indices estimation.Moreover, for the first time, with simultaneous 214 Bi/ 214 Po and 212 Bi/ 212 Po decay pairs measurement, we propose a quick estimation of natural and excess α indices (excess α radioactivities) which allows to confirm and quantify the presence of α-radioactive contaminants.

Abstract:iThemba LABS is participating in a joint research project to measure neutron-induced cross-sections for the (n, xn) reactions for various target materials. For neutron energies above 20 MeV, the (n, xn) set of reactions is becoming increasingly important for neutron fluence monitoring and spectra unfolding for future generation IV nuclear reactors. Test experiments commenced at the iThemba LABS facility with irradiations of target materials using quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams at high energies (above 40 MeV). These experiments are meant to evaluate the sensitivity of generating a clear γ-ray spectrum above the background level of the counting system. For this contribution, we report on the neutron activation analysis of the following target materials, 197 Au and 169 Tm using a quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam of about 90 MeV. The discussion focuses on calibrating the gamma-ray detector, and counting, and analyzing the gamma-ray spectra of the neutron-activated foils. The following reaction products were identified 194 Au, 196 Au, 198 Au, 167 Tm, and 168 Tm. Using the background-corrected gamma-ray spectra, the activities of the reaction products were calculated with uncertainties ranging between 5 % and 30 %.
Feasibility of 177Lu activity quantification using a small portable CZT-based gamma-camera

Abstract:Abstract Background In image processing for activity quantification, the end goal is to produce a metric that is independent of the measurement geometry. Photon attenuation needs to be accounted for and can be accomplished utilizing spectral information, avoiding the need of additional image acquisitions. The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of 177 Lu activity quantification with a small CZT-based hand-held gamma-camera, using such an attenuation correction method. Methods A previously presented dual photopeak method, based on the differential attenuation for two photon energies, is adapted for the three photopeaks at 55 keV, 113 keV, and 208 keV for 177 Lu. The measurement model describes the count rates in each energy window as a function of source depth and activity, accounting for distance-dependent system sensitivity, attenuation, and build-up. Parameter values are estimated from characterizing measurements, and the source depth and activity are obtained by minimizing the difference between measured and modelled count rates. The method is applied and evaluated in phantom measurements, in a clinical setting for superficial lesions in two patients, and in a pre-clinical setting for one human tumour xenograft. Evaluation is made for a LEHR and an MEGP collimator. Results For phantom measurements at clinically relevant depths, the average (and standard deviation) in activity errors are 17% ± 9.6% (LEHR) and 2.9% ± 3.6% (MEGP). For patient measurements, deviations from activity estimates from planar images from a full-sized gamma-camera are 0% ± 21% (LEHR) and 16% ± 18% (MEGP). For mouse measurements, average deviations of − 16% (LEHR) and − 6% (MEGP) are obtained when compared to a small-animal SPECT/CT system. The MEGP collimator appears to be better suited for activity quantification, yielding a smaller variability in activity estimates, whereas the LEHR results are more severely affected by septal penetration. Conclusions Activity quantification for 177 Lu using the hand-held camera is found to be feasible. The readily available nature of the hand-held camera may enable more frequent activity quantification in e.g., superficial structures in patients or in the pre-clinical setting.

Abstract:BackgroundIn rare decay experiments, for instance dark matter and neutrino experiments, rays produced by the radioavtive decay in detector material induce extra experiment background, the energy deposition would contaminate the concerned region. Accurately measuring radioactivity of detector materials, better understanding background source, and controlling experimental background are extremely important to improve sensitivity for those detections. With high energy resolution, flexibility for sample geometry and non-destructive processing for samples, high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ spectroscopy is a widely used ultra-low radioactive technology. The PandaX collaboration set up two high-purity germanium γ spectroscopies, so-call JP1 and JP2, in Jinping underground laboratory.PurposeThis study aims to improve the sensitivity of γ spectroscopies, precisely measure materials with lower radioactivity and screen lower radioactive material for dark matter and neutrino experiments by designing a gamma spectroscopy system with dual high-purity germanium detectors based on the existing JP1.MethodsTwo approaches, i.e., enhancing efficiency and suppressing background were adopted to improve the sensitivity of both HPGe detectors, and the Monto Carlo method was employed to analyze the efficiency and background source of JP1, hence the improved result of dual high-purity germanium detectors was estimated.ResultsFor different nuclides concerned in dark matter and neutrino experiments, the minimum detectable activity of dual high-purity germanium γ spectroscopy system is expected to improve by factor of 2~4. This new system can also measure the radioactivity with γ-γ coincidence method to improve the sensitivity for small size samples.ConclusionsDual high-purity germanium γ spectroscopy can improve sensitivity of factor 2~4 and apply to developing a new γ-γ coincidence method.
Multi-group approximation, scattering and calibration coefficients, uncertainty estimates and detection limits of a NaI(Tl)-based gamma spectrometry set-up for low-level activity analysis

Abstract:This paper describes a quantitative radioactivity analysis method especially suitable for environmental samples with low-level activity. The method, consisting of a multi-group approximation based on total absorption and Compton spectra of gamma rays, is coherently formalized and a computer algorithm thereof designed to analyze low-level activity NaI(Tl) gamma ray spectra of environmental samples. Milk powder from 1988 was used as the example case. Included is a special analysis on the uncertainty estimation. Gamma sensitiveness is defined and numerically evaluated. The results reproduced the calibration data well, attesting to the reliability of the method. The special analysis shows that the uncertainty of the assessed activity is tied to that of the calibration activity data. More than 77% of measured 1461-keV photons of (40)K were counted in the range of clearly lower energies. Pile-up of single line photons ((137)Cs) looks negligible compared to that of a two-line cascade ((134)Cs). The detection limit varies with radionuclide and spectrum region and is related to the gamma sensitiveness of the detection system. The best detection limit always lies in a spectrum region holding a line of the radionuclide and the highest sensitiveness. The most radioactive milk powder sample showed a activity concentration of 21+/-1 Bq g(-1)for (137)Cs, 323+/-13 Bq g(-1) for (40)K and no (134)Cs.

Abstract:How to operate 82Sr/82Rb and 68Ge/68Ga generators used in the positron emission tomography scan process is explained, and the importance of 82Sr and 68Ge radionuclides for these generators is revealed. To produce medical 82Sr and 68Ge by means of a proton accelerator in an irradiation time of 24 h, a proton beam current of 250 µA, and an energy range Eproton = 100 → 5 MeV, the cross sections and the neutron emission spectrum curves of (p,xn) reaction processes on Rb-85, Ga-69 and Ga-71 targets were calculated, and the activities and yields of the product were simulated for the reaction processes. Additionally, the integral yields of the reaction processes were determined via the calculated cross-sectional curves and the mass stopping power obtained from the X-PMSP program. Furthermore, based on the obtained results, the appropriate reaction processes for the production of 82Sr and 68Ge isotopes on Rb-85, Ga-69, and Ga-71 targets are discussed.

Abstract:During therapeutic treatment with heavier ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, the accuracy must be higher than ($\pm$3% and$\pm$1 mm). Therefore, measurements are performed to determine the double differential cross section for different reactions. In this paper, the analysis of data from 12C +12C reactions at 95 MeV/u are presented. The emitted particles are detected with \DeltaEthin-\DeltaEthick-E telescopes made of a stack of two silicon detectors and a CsI crystal. Two different methods are used to identify the particles. One is based on graphical cuts onto the \DeltaE-E maps, the second is based on the so-called KaliVeda method using a functional description of \DeltaE versus E. The results of the two methods will be presented in this paper as well as the comparison between both.
