Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Autistic people are more likely to experience physical and mental health difficulties across the lifespan, leading to an increased risk of premature mortality likely due to health disparities. At present, little is known about the healthcare experiences of autistic older adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 autistic adults aged 65 years or over living in the United Kingdom. Reflexive thematic analysis produced these themes: (1) A lifetime of being misunderstood; (2) Autistic people falling between the gaps; (3) Processing autism diagnosis in later life; (4) Concerns about service pressures and scarce resources; (5) Lack of continuity of care, empathy and understanding; (6) Anxiety, alexithymia and sensory overload; and (7) Reduced social support and concerns for the future. Some of the challenges autistic older adults faced were like those experienced by younger or middle-aged autistic adults. However, they also reported additional difficulties related to ageing and lifelong experiences of social exclusion. These difficulties were made worse by increased service pressures. A comprehensive approach is needed, including enhanced staff training, personalised care, targeted support and policy changes. Services should also consult with autistic older adults so they can advocate for their care, shape policy and co-design services.Lay abstractAutistic people often face both physical and mental health challenges throughout their lives, which can lead to a higher risk of premature death due to health inequalities. Importantly, they must also speak with autistic older adults so they can advocate for their current and future care.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Objectives Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong diagnosis. While several studies have examined the effects of autism throughout childhood, few have considered older adulthood and the difference between the allistic (i.e., persons who are not autistic) population and autistic older adults. In literature regarding healthy aging, there is sparse evidence regarding the intersections of older adulthood and autism. The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the state of literature regarding autistic older adults and the domains of healthy aging, utilizing the framework conceived by Arksey and O’Malley (2005). Research Design and Methods To identify the research question, we took the following steps: identify the relevant studies; select studies; chart the data; and collate, summarize, and report the results. The specific domains of healthy aging considered include physical health, mobility, mental health, cognition and memory, and social connectedness. Results A total of 35 articles were selected for final review. Fifty-seven percent of these studies considered only one domain of healthy aging, 23% studied two domains, while 14% measured three domains and 6% assessed four domains. No study considered all five domains. Of the five domains considered for this scoping review, mental health and cognition and memory were the most represented domains in the studies. Discussion and Implications Overall, healthy aging among autistic older adults is largely understudied. More research is needed to better identify and tailor interventions and services for autistic older adults and their families to support healthy aging.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in adults on the autistic spectrum, and more recently, the challenges related to aging in this population. A two-day Think Tank meeting, focused on aging in autism, was convened amongst international leaders in the field of autism research and practice. This meeting included a series of presentations addressing the current status of aging research, followed by discussions regarding priorities going forward. Attendees shared their thoughts and concerns regarding community services, government policies, societal perspectives and physical and mental health. The goal of these discussions was to consider systematic approaches aimed at providing meaningful supports that can ensure a quality of life for seniors on the autism spectrum.

Abstract:This paper presents new empirical data obtained from interviews and focus groups on older (50 and over) autistic people's experiences of accessing a variety of services. The involvement of older autistic people and giving voice to their experiences was central to all aspects of the research process. This work makes a significant contribution to the scarce literature on older autistic people. In particular, it discusses the factors that act as barriers and enablers to the access to and productive use of services, the strategies used by participants to manage and improve their experiences, and the success of these strategies. It shows older autistic people as autonomous adults and active protagonists in their own lives, taking action to overcome the barriers they experience to accessing services on the same terms as everyone else, but that lack of understanding and support from service providers and the general public can undermine their strategies. Finally, this work provides a series of recommendations for service providers to improve (older) autistic people's service access and experiences.

Abstract:Abstract A significant proportion of autistic adults today were not diagnosed until later in life, a group referred to as the ‘lost generation,’ which may affect mental health. In Study 1 we explored quality of life and autistic trait levels in 420 autistic and TD adults, and in Study 2 we explored the experiences of 8 autistic adults diagnosed as adults. We found that autistic adults had lower quality of life outcomes and higher autistic trait levels which related to age of diagnosis, and qualitative findings indicated that while adults were empowered by their new diagnosis, they still require specialized supports. Our findings are discussed, emphasizing future directions and implications for the current care system in place for autistic adults.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Emerging research points to high rates of major psychiatric disorders and chronic medical conditions among autistic adults. However, the unique healthcare needs of autistic adults are often overlooked, perhaps due to limitations in population-level surveillance and widespread public misconceptions about autism in adulthood. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this prevalence of poor health outcomes in autistic adults requires an exploration into the lived experiences of autistic adults across their lifespans. This study uses a qualitative approach to investigate the healthcare experiences of autistic adults. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 autistic adults in the United States, ranging in age from 18 to 56 years, seven of whom identified as nonbinary or gender non-conforming. We asked autistic adults about how they manage their health and interact with healthcare systems. Through thematic analysis of the data, barriers to receipt of quality care for autistic adults were identified. Results were then conceptualized through the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety model of work system and patient safety. Through this model, this study describes the interactions between autistic adults and their healthcare systems, pointing to specific areas for improvement and intervention. Overall, findings advocate for a system-level approach to improving health outcomes of autistic adults.Lay abstractResearch has suggested that autistic adults may have a bigger chance of having mental health and physical health conditions such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, diabetes, obesity, and heart problems than adults without autism. This study wants to find out the challenges autistic adults experience in taking care of their health and in going to different doctors. Researchers interviewed autistic adults across the country about their healthcare experiences. The interviewed autistic adults told the researchers about the barriers (things that did not help) and facilitators (things that did help) that impacted whether they received the care they needed. The researchers then organized what they learned from the autistic adults into a model called the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety model of work system and patient safety. This model explains how different parts of a healthcare system (person, tasks, technology and tools, environment, and organization) interact with one another and impact the healthcare experiences and outcomes of the patients in their care, like autistic adults. Overall, this study advocates for a systems-level approach to improving the healthcare experiences of autistic adults and their health outcomes.

Abstract:Background There is a need to better understand autism across the life course, including the lives of both autistic people and supporting relatives. As part of a larger mixed methods cohort study involving autistic adults, carers and relatives this sub-study focused on the experiences of relatives alone to learn more about the lives of people from the wider personal networks. Our research questions were: 1. What are the experiences of family members who care for and/or support autistic adults, 2. How can the viewpoints of relatives add to what we know about transitions and challenges experienced by autistic adults, and 3. What strategies/support have been helpful for adults and relatives? Methods Relatives of autistic adults were purposively sampled and recruited using the Relatives/Carers cohort from the Adult Autism Spectrum Cohort—UK. 18 participants aged 31-81years who were related to 16 autistic adults aged 18-57years were interviewed for 24-91minutes. Interview transcripts were examined using reflexive thematic analysis. Main findings Two overarching themes were developed, ‘Family support goes a long way in caring for autistic adults’ and ‘When families turn to society for support’ with subthemes. Relatives described benefits they had gained and their admiration for autistic adults. They reflected on how they gave support for independence in various contexts of dependence. They also identified the challenges that both autistic adults and families face navigating support systems (for example for healthcare and employment). An important novel outcome was the advocated value of role-models with lived experience who come from outside of the family. Recommendations The findings lead to recommendations for: (i) Strategies to reduce the barriers for support that are faced by autistic individuals and relatives during crisis points; (ii) recognition and support for what enables both relatives and autistic adults to function independently (e.g. funded activities, flexible employment); (iii) future planning conversations to include relatives who can enhance knowledge and help plan for future care or support needs for autistic adults and (iv) opportunities for role models (persons with lived experience, autistic adults and relatives) to inspire others and disseminate knowledge. Conclusions These findings add valuable insights into the experiences of relatives of autistic adults and challenge the reader to have greater appreciation of the many roles relatives can contribute across time and in a variety of contexts. These perspectives add important information for those working with and planning provision for autistic adults.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Studies commonly measure the challenges of caring for autistic adolescents and young adults, but scarcely explore the positive aspects of the caregiving experience. This study employed an equal-status concurrent mixed methods approach to quantitatively assess predictors of positive aspects of caregiving and qualitatively examine 174 caregivers' perceived rewards, or positive aspects, of caring for autistic adolescents and young adults (ages 16–30 years). Results from multiple regression analyses suggest that youth's helping behavior most strongly predicted positive aspects of caregiving, and youth receiving more services and caregivers' greater report of social support and use of religious, acceptance, and instrumental support coping also significantly predicted greater reported positive aspects of caregiving. Findings from a phenomenologically informed thematic analysis suggest that caregivers find reward in witnessing youths' progress and joyous qualities, in the caregiver–youth relationship, and in caregivers' own growth. Mixed methods findings highlight that positive aspects of caregiving likely extend caregivers' self-development and may be relationship-specific. Study findings offer a strengths-based framework that highlights the positive aspects of caring for autistic adolescents and young adults. We contribute to the research in defining factors related to positive aspects of caregiving, which may inform future work and contribute to caregiver well-being.Lay abstractWe wanted to explore the positive, or rewarding, experiences of caregivers who were caring for older adolescents or young autistic adults. We surveyed 174 caregivers, asking questions about how they dealt with stressors, the support they had from people in their lives, and the different behaviors of the autistic youth they care for. Using an existing measure, as well as an open-ended question, we asked caregivers about the most rewarding aspects of caring for their youth. When examining survey responses, we found that caregivers who reported receiving more help and support from their autistic youth also reported more positive aspects related to caregiving. In response to our study's open-ended question, caregivers talked about the reward of seeing their youth grow and progress (e.g. learning new skills, reaching new milestones), described positive aspects of the relationship with their youth (e.g. sharing a special bond), and reflected on their own learning and personal growth as caregivers and people. Our findings highlight the positive, or rewarding, aspects of caregiving for autistic adolescents and young adults. This work will inform future work studying positive aspects of caring for autistic individuals and how this may impact caregivers' psychological well-being.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Approximately 1.2 million autistic youth will reach the legal age of adulthood over the next decade. Given dynamic changes in the socioecological context of the transition to adulthood, we produced an updated transitions research agenda reflecting the perspectives of autistic young adults, care partners (parents), and professionals who use autism research. Methods: We conducted 9 focus groups: 4 young adult, 4 care partner, and 1 professional, with 59 total participants. Young adults were grouped by self-reported identity: (1) racial and ethnic minority, (2) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other identities, and (3) nonspeaking, in addition to a general group. We selected care partners who supported youth with varying intensity of support needs. We used rapid qualitative inquiry methods to extract key points from answers to semistructured interview questions. Results: Delays in diagnosis and transition processes, and placement on wait lists resulted in significant obstacles to successful transitions. Parents assumed a dominant role by coordinating services, navigating systems and identifying opportunities for community participation, and providing direct supports. There was an overarching need for inclusion of autistic people in transitions research and consideration of cultural differences in priorities and values. Participants prioritized investigation of variation in transitions among autistic youth with intersecting identities, navigation support (eg, peer mentors), efficacy of services and supports (eg, transition and employment services), differences in available services by location, and problems within specific benefits programs. Conclusions: Research should focus on understanding population-level factors of system performance on outcomes and support needs, service delivery among marginalized groups, and transformation of complex service ecosystems.
The adult experience of being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder: A qualitative meta-synthesis

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. There is a dearth of research into the experience of adult diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, and targeted research is needed to understand the needs of these adults. The aim of this coproduced review was to assess existing qualitative data on the lived experience of receiving an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, identify recurring themes, and synthesize them into a visual model representing the journey through diagnosis. Using thematic analysis, we analyzed qualitative data from 24 studies of adult experiences of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from PsycINFO, Embase, MEDLINE, and CINAHL. Thirty-two "descriptive" themes and three superordinate themes were identified. These themes represented how factors relating to identity and relationships are impacted by the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and the role of adaptation and assimilation. While the diagnostic process was confusing and disappointing for many, it often led to a sense of relief and clarity regarding past experiences. It created opportunities to connect with other autistic individuals and to access services, though appropriate supports were widely lacking. Recommendations are made that the diagnosis process explicitly considers needs in relation to: the impact of the diagnosis on identity, interactions with other people, choices regarding disclosure, and whether and how to make informed adaptations.Lay abstractThere is little research looking at the experience of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder as adults. Adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder face different challenges than children, and more research is needed to better understand those challenges. For this review, autistic and non-autistic researchers looked at research on the experience of receiving a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder as an adult. We looked for themes in people's experience leading up to diagnosis, going through the diagnostic process, and living their life after diagnosis. We analyzed 24 studies and found three overarching themes that captured thirty-two themes describing the experience of diagnosis. The three overarching themes expressed issues with identity and relationships before and after the diagnosis and identified that the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in adulthood impacted people's adaptation to and assimilation (i.e. the making sense of and internalizing the diagnosis) of autism spectrum disorder. While the diagnostic process itself was confusing and disappointing for many, it often led to a sense of relief and clarity regarding past experiences and had effects on identity and self-esteem. It created opportunities to connect with other autistic individuals and to access services, though appropriate supports were widely lacking. Recommendations are made that the impact of the diagnosis on people's identity and choices about telling others about their diagnosis, and whether and how people want to make adaptations, should be discussed and thought through in the process of diagnosis.

Abstract:Previous research has indicated that autistic adults experience higher rates of co‐occurring mental health difficulties and poorer quality of life (QoL) than their non‐autistic peers. Little is known, however, about these aspects in older age or whether younger and older autistic adults experience similar patterns This cross‐sectional study investigated potential age‐related effects on autism symptoms, self‐reported mental health, and QoL in younger and older autistic adults (n = 79, aged 19–71 years) compared to a non‐autistic control group (n = 57) matched for gender, age and IQ. Results showed that autistic adults had higher levels of self‐reported autism symptoms and poorer QoL than controls. There were no significant age effects on autism symptoms or on most self‐rated mental health symptoms. However, significantly more autistic adults in the younger versus older group scored above the clinical threshold for anxiety, somatoform disorders and eating disorders. Older autistic adults rated social QoL as significantly better than younger autistic adults; there was no significant age difference in the control group. Self‐reported QoL was best predicted by self‐ratings of severity of depressive symptoms in both groups. Further research is needed to track autism and co‐occurring mental health symptomatology across the lifespan, so that service provision can be tailored accordingly. Lay Summary Young autistic adults have reported more psychological difficulties and poorer quality of life (QoL) than the general population. We investigated whether these difficulties continue into older age. Autism symptoms and mental health problems were common in autistic adults, with no difference between age groups, except for anxiety, physical and eating problems. Although QoL was poorer in both younger and older autistic compared to non‐autistic adults, older autistic adults reported better social QoL than those who were younger.

Resilience in Family Caregivers of Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Integrative Review of the Literature

Abstract:Abstract Care of adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a public health priority and costs are projected to be 549 billion US dollars by 2025. Middle and older adult FCGs of adults with ASD often provide lifelong care, experience chronic stress, consequently, are at risk of poor mental health and QOL. An integrative review examined factors associated with resilience in studies of middle and older adult FCGs of adults with ASD. A comprehensive literature search found 10 reports of 8 studies published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals before October 13, 2020. Studies and/or reports of factors associated with resilience in middle and older adult FCGs of adults with ASD were examined using PRISMA, and quality checklists. Some 340 articles met search criteria, 14 were fully reviewed, and 10 were included. Findings suggest FCGs of adults with ASD show capacity for resilience consistent with research on FCGs of children with ASD significant chronic stress. A broad range of resilience factors were studied, and resilience was associated with positive social support, higher QOL, self-efficacy, and problem and meaning-focused coping styles. There is a dearth of research on middle and older adult FCGs of adults with ASD. Increased reporting of social determinants of health and participation of underrepresented groups is needed. Future research must address FGC heterogeneity and specify theoretically grounded conceptual and operational definitions of resilience. Identifying resilience factors is necessary for intervention studies to enhance resilience.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Self-determination enhances a person's quality of life and is a fundamental human right. According to self-determination theory, autonomy is one of three basic psychological needs that must be met to experience self-determination. The overarching aim of this exploratory study was to learn about autonomy from the perspective of autistic adults with intellectual disability, including what autonomy meant and how participants wanted to be supported to be autonomous. Participants (n = 8; median age = 24) engaged in a variety of participatory methods (e.g. discussions, arts and crafts, games) during weekly sessions. These sessions took place over 7–16 weeks and were each informed by a guiding question related to autonomy. Artifacts, video or audio recordings from each session, and reflexive journals were thematically analyzed. The results support an overarching meaning of autonomy as being able to be themselves. Participants identified (1) choice and control, (2) communicating their way, and (3) safe environments as important and showed us how they wanted to be supported in each of these three areas. We also identified having autistic facilitators as an overarching strategy. These results provide a foundation for implementing change to enhance autonomy for autistic adults with intellectual disabilities.Lay Autistic young adults with intellectual disabilities want to be autonomous but are less autonomous than other people. However, they can be autonomous with appropriate support. We wanted to learn how we can support autistic adults with intellectual disabilities to be more autonomous. We designed our study with help from five autistic community partners to make sure the research was relevant to autistic people and would improve their lives. We talked with eight autistic young adults with intellectual disabilities about autonomy. We defined "talk" as verbal language, as well as non-verbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, vocalizations, and laughter. We did art projects and played games while we talked. We met in small groups over multiple sessions. Our participants told us that being autonomous meant being able to be themselves. They told us three main ways to support their autonomy: (1) having choice and control, (2) being able to communicate in their own way, and (3) being in a safe environment. Families, support staff, and caregivers can use this information to help autistic young adults with intellectual disabilities to be autonomous.

Abstract:Autism diagnosis in adulthood has become increasingly common due to a range of factors including changes in awareness, diagnostic criteria, and professional practices. Past research identified a range of demographic and autism-related factors associated with autism diagnosis age in children. However, it is unclear whether these apply to autistic adults. This study aimed to examine predictors of autism diagnosis age in adults while controlling for current age and autistic traits. We used a cross-sectional sample of 657 adults aged 15–80 from three self and carer-report studies: the Australian Longitudinal Study of Autism in Adulthood (ALSAA), Study of Australian School-Leavers with Autism (SASLA) and Pathways, Predictors and Impact of Receiving an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis in Adulthood (Pathways). Using hierarchical multiplicative heteroscedastic regression, we found that older current age and higher self-reported autistic traits predicted older diagnosis age, and that female gender, lack of intellectual disability, language other than English, family history of autism, lifetime depression, and no obsessive–compulsive disorder predicted older diagnosis age beyond current age and autistic traits. The paradoxical relationship between high autistic traits and older diagnosis age requires further investigation. Based on these findings, we recommended strategies to improve autism recognition in women and people from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Future studies could extend the findings by examining the effects of childhood and adulthood socioeconomic status on adult diagnosis age.

Abstract:Background: The historical focus on autism as a childhood disorder means that evidence regarding autism in adulthood lags significantly behind research in other age groups. Emerging studies on the relationship of age with autism characteristics do not target older adult samples, which presents a barrier to studying the important variability that exists in life span developmental research. This study aims to further our understanding of the relationship between the Autism-Spectrum Quotient Scale and age in a large adult sample. Methods: The present study examines the relationship of Autism-Spectrum Quotient Scale (AQ) scores with age in 1139 adults, ages 18-97 years. Participants came from three distinct samples-a sample of primarily students, a sample of MTurk participants, and a sample of primarily community dwelling older adults. The majority of the participants did not self-report an autism diagnosis (91%), were female (67%), and identified as White (81%). Participants completed the AQ primarily via online surveys. Researchers scored the AQ following six common scoring practices. Results: Results of preregistered analyses indicate that autism characteristics measured by the AQ are not strongly associated with age (r values from -0.01 to -0.11). Further findings indicate that the measurement of autism characteristics is consistent across age into late life using both multiple groups and local structural equation modeling approaches to measurement invariance (comparative fit indices = 0.82-0.83, root mean square error = 0.06) as well as reliability analysis. Finally, demographic and autism-related variables (sex, race, self-identified autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, and degree of autism characteristics) did not moderate the relationship between age and autism characteristics. Conclusion: These results suggest that self-reports of autism characteristics using the AQ do not vary strongly by age in this large age-representative sample. Findings suggest that the AQ can potentially serve as a useful tool for future research on autism across the life span. Important limitations on what we can learn from these findings point toward critical avenues for future research in this area. Lay summary: Why was this study done?: Self-report questionnaires of autism characteristics are a potentially important resource for studying autism in adulthood. This study sought to provide additional information about one of the most commonly used self-report questionnaires, the Autism-Spectrum Quotient Scale (AQ), across adulthood.What was the purpose of this study?: This study intended to determine if there is a relationship between scores on the AQ and age. Researchers also worked to identify which of the multiple different ways of scoring the AQ worked best across adulthood.What did the researchers do?: Researchers collected data from over a thousand participants aged 18-97 years. Participants from three different age groups completed online surveys to self-report their levels of autism characteristics on the AQ. Therefore, findings from the present research must be carefully interpreted to be about autism characteristics not diagnoses. The sample was also limited in a number of other ways. As in any studies including a broad age range of individuals, the oldest participants are likely quite healthy, engaged individuals. This may particularly be the case given the higher mortality rates and health challenges seen with autism. Similarly, as with any self-report research, this research is limited to those individuals who could answer questions about their autism characteristics. The sample was also predominantly White and nonautistic. Finally, the research was limited to one point in time and so cannot tell us about how autism characteristics may change across adulthood.How will these findings help autistic adults now or in the future?: These findings support the potential for the AQ to be a useful tool for future research on autism in adulthood. For example, researchers can use measures such as the AQ to study how autism characteristics change over time or are associated with aging-related issues such as changes in physical health and memory. Such research may be able to provide a better understanding of how to support autistic individuals across adulthood.

Abstract:Abstract Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) participate in physical activity (PA) infrequently compared to adults in the general population. This is problematic as individuals with ASD suffer from disproportionate physical and mental health co-morbidities as well as diminished life expectancy, but do not reap the physical and mental health benefits of PA. This study used data from the National Core Indicators-In Person Consumer Survey (n=4,370; age: 18-78) to analyze factors associated with both aerobic PA and muscle strengthening (MS) activity in adults with ASD receiving state Developmental Disability Services. This research used multilevel logistic regression modeling, with mediation and moderation analyses to explore personal and environmental factors associated with PA/MS in this population. Findings indicated the following significant associations between community engagement and PA and MS: community contact (OR=1.17; p<0.001; OR=1.07; p<0.001), community group participation (OR=1.83; p<0.001; OR=1.91; p<0.001), and employment/day program participation (OR=1.32; p<0.05; OR=1.32; p<0.001). Additionally, at older ages, participants were less likely to engage in PA and MS three or more times a week (OR=0.99; p<0.05; OR=0.99; p<0.05). These findings indicate that increasing age is associated with decreased PA and MS activity in this group, while community engagement may facilitate their PA and MS activity. While much remains unknown about the population aging with ASD, it is evident that they suffer from poorer health than the general population and have experienced lifelong difficulties with socialization and communication. Greater access to community engagement opportunities may promote this population’s healthy aging, as well as support their unique social needs.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) occurs in approximately 1 in 44 children in the United States. As the pediatric population of individuals with an ASD age, and prevalence of ASD continues to trend upward, nurses who care for adults and older adults can expect to see a steadily increasing percentage of patients affected by an ASD. Individuals and families affected by this complicated and heterogeneous neurological disorder grapple with a wide range of social and behavioral impairments as well as substantial medical and psychological comorbidities, making nursing care complex and multi-faceted. Individuals with an ASD comprise a vulnerable population with a markedly reduced life expectancy of nearly 36 years. This article reviews foundational information about the essentials of ASD, such as the definition and characteristics and discusses research about ASD and aging. We have created an embedded case study throughout the discussion that offers an exemplar based on evidence related to functionality, comorbidities, family centered care, and becoming informed through descriptions of the moment experience. Finally, we discuss implications for person-centered care for those with ASD that consider practice, education, research, and nursing administration.
