Abstract:Thermoelectric materials can convert heat into electrical energy, which can potentially be used to improve the fuel efficiency of conventional heat engines. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the thermoelectric field, where nanotechnology has played an important role. The quantum confinement effect has been shown to increase the Seebeck coefficient, while the nanostructures can effectively scatter phonons. In this review, the latest advances in thermoelectric nanomaterials were summarized and the challenges they face in thermoelectric-device fabrication were discussed. Firstly, the major problems hindering the development of nanowire-, thin-film-, and nanocrystal-based thermoelectric devices were discussed, followed by possible solutions in the subsequent sections. The unique carrier transport properties of one-dimensional nanowires that result from their distinct band structures were then examined. The distinct diffusive thermal transport, caused by boundary scattering of phonons, was also discussed. Next, the unique thermoelectric transport properties of superlattice thin films and two-dimensional electron gas were focused on. In addition, the different types of flexible thin films and strategies to improve their thermoelectric performance were described. Subsequently, the electrical transport properties of thermoelectric bulk samples consolidated from solution-processed nanocrystals, including the synthesis principles and modulation doping were discussed. Furthermore, the rational design of distinct microstructures which can selectively scatter phonons was elaborated on. Finally, we prospect for future developments in thermoelectric nanomaterials.

Abstract:Thermoelectric effects enable direct conversion between thermal and electrical energy and provide an alternative route for power generation and refrigeration. Over the past ten years, the exploration of high-performance thermoelectric materials has attracted great attention from both an academic research perspective and with a view to industrial applications. This review summarizes the progress that has been made in recent years in developing thermoelectric materials with a high dimensionless figure of merits (ZT) and the related fabrication processes for producing nanostuctured materials. The challenge to develop thermoelectric materials with superior performance is to tailor the interconnected thermoelectric physical parameters — electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity — for a crystalline system. Nanostructures provide a chance to disconnect the linkage between thermal and electrical transport by introducing some new scattering mechanisms. Recent improvements in thermoelectric efficiency appear to be dominated by efforts to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity through nanostructural design. The materials focused in this review include Bi–Te alloys, skutterudite compounds, Ag–Pb–Sb–Te quaternary systems, half-Heusler compounds and some high-ZT oxides. Possible future strategies for developing thermoelectric materials are also discussed.

Abstract:Efficiency of thermoelectric materials is generally discussed in terms of the dimensionless figure-of-merit, ZT = S-2 sigma T/kappa, Many researchers have found that it is possible to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by incorporating nanostructures (i.e. nanoparticles or heterobarriers) into materials, thereby scattering phonons. At the same time, it has been theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated that barriers can be used to "filter" the distribution of carriers which contribute to conduction. By doing so, it is possible to significantly increase the Seebeck coefficient while only modestly decreasing the electrical conductivity. As a result of this energy-dependent scattering of carriers, the thermoelectric power factor is increased. We present theoretical and experimental results for metal/semiconductor nanocomposites consisting of metallic rare-earth-group V nanoparticles within III-V semiconductors (e. g. ErAs:InGaAlAs) demonstrating both an increase in thermoelectric power factor and a decrease in thermal conductivity, resulting in a large figure of merit. We also discuss metal/semiconductor superlattices made of lattice-matched nitride materials for electron filtering and the prospects of these materials for efficient thermoelectrics, especially at high temperatures. Finally, we will discuss both various synthesis techniques for these materials, including the prospects for bulk growth, and also devices fabricated from these materials.

Abstract:Bulk thermoelectric materials are of interest for commercial application in both power generation and Peltier refrigeration. Various synthesis approaches have been developed by our group for high performance bulk thermoelectric materials, such as solvo- or hydrothermal synthesis for nanopowders, hot-pressing, and spark plasma sintering for nanostructured bulk materials, and rapid solidification for metal silicides. In this article we report some of our recent results in the development of high ZT thermoelectric materials, including Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 nanocomposites and CoSb 3 micro/nanocomposites prepared by a powder blending route, and GeTe-AgSbTe 2 and Mg 2 Si-Mg 2 Sn nanocomposites prepared by an in situ route. The results show various possibilities for improved microstructures and therefore enhanced properties of bulk thermoelectric materials through optimization of the preparation processing based on simple synthesis routes. A high ZT of approximately 1.5 has been obtained in both Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 and GeTe-AgSbTe 2 nanocomposites. Further ZT enhancement of the materials should be possible through the control of the nanopowder morphology during synthesis and the hindering of␣grain growth during sintering, as well as through the optimization of composition and doping.

Abstract:In recent years, application of nanostructured thermoelectric materials got a significant research interest. Earlier nanostructure materials like superlattice or quantum dot are available as a thin film or in minute quantity, but current research on bulk nanostructured compound provides a large number of thermoelectric materials. The synthesis of bulk nanocomposite is an efficient way of lowering thermal conductivity for the enhancement of thermoelectric performance. In this review, we will discuss the concept of bulk nanocomposites by extrinsic phase mixing and how it can affect thermoelectric energy conversion. A structural phase transition near 420 K in Ag 2 Te raises the interface potential effect, which implies its dispersion in the Bi 2 Te 3 , Sb 2 Te 3 , and PbTe-based matrices. The enhancement of the thermoelectric properties also discussed by the charge-selective Anderson localization while preserving the extended electronic state. For nanostructure bulk composite a very high thermoelectric figure-of-merit, ZT > 2.0 has been achieved, suggesting this may be a versatile approach for power generation from waste heat. In this review, we emphasized the thermoelectric properties of extrinsic phase mixed bulk nanostructured composites and the future outlook of how the ZT value can be improved for these nanocomposites are also discussed.

Abstract:The thermal properties of interfaces in nanomaterials are critical for various technological applications, including thermal management in electronic and photonic devices, thermoelectric conversion and thermal insulation. Recent advancements in numerical simulation tools (the non-equilibrium Green's approach, the Boltzmann transport equation and the Monte Carlo method, molecular dynamics simulations) have significantly enhanced our understanding of phonon transport and scattering processes in nanomaterials. These advances have led to the discovery of new thermal interfacial materials and enabled precise modulation of phonon thermal conductance to achieve desired thermal performance. This review summarizes recent research progress in interface thermal transport, focusing on intriguing heat phenomena such as finite size effect and phonon coherent property. Additionally, it discusses strategies for modulating thermal conductance through disorder and roughness. Finally, the review proposes the opportunities and challenges associated with modulating interface thermal transport.
Electronic transport computation in thermoelectric materials: From ab initio scattering rates to nanostructures

Abstract:Over the last two decades a plethora of new thermoelectric materials, their alloys, and their nanostructures were synthesized. The ZT figure of merit, which quantifies the thermoelectric efficiency of these materials increased from values of unity to values consistently beyond two across material families. At the same time, the ability to identify and optimize such materials, has stressed the need for advanced numerical tools for computing electronic transport in materials with arbitrary bandstructure complexity, multiple scattering mechanisms, and a large degree of nanostructuring. Many computational methods have been developed, the majority of which utilize the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) formalism, spanning from fully ab initio to empirical treatment, with varying degree of computational expense and accuracy. In this paper we describe a suitable computational process that we have recently developed specifically for thermoelectric materials. The method consists of three independent software packages that we have developed and: 1) begins from ab initio calculation of the electron-phonon scattering rates, 2) to then be used within a Boltzmann transport simulator, and 3) calculated quantities from BTE are then passed on to a Monte Carlo simulator to examine electronic transport in highly nanostructured material configurations. The method we describe is computationally significantly advantageous compared to current fully ab initio and existing Monte Carlo methods, but with a similar degree of accuracy, thus making it truly enabling in understanding and assessing thermoelectric transport in complex band, nanostructured materials.

Abstract:High‐performance thermoelectric materials have attracted immense interest due to the capability of directly converting thermal energy into electrical energy. The correlation and inherent complexity between the thermoelectric parameters pose serious challenges to improving the materials’ thermoelectric performance. Herein, the emerging novel theories in the field of thermoelectrics are summarized, such as the coherent phonon, nanophononic metamaterial, rattling effect, topological phonon, and topological electron. The impacts of these new concepts on thermoelectric performance are then reviewed. Finally, a number of promising thermoelectric materials such as one‐dimensional nanowires, two‐dimensional layered materials, and nanomesh structures are discussed. The advanced understanding of thermal and electrical transport properties in thermoelectric materials is presented herein, providing new opportunities for improving thermoelectric performance.
Decouple Electronic and Phononic Transport in Nanotwinned Structures: a New Strategy for Enhancing the Figure-of-merit of Thermoelectrics.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials manifest themselves to enable direct conversion of temperature differences to electric power and vice versa. Though remarkable advances have been achieved in the past decades for various TE systems, the energy conversion efficiency of TE devices, which is characterized by a dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT = S2σT/(κel + κph)), generally remains a poor factor that severely limits TE devices' competitiveness and range of employment. The bottleneck for substantially boosting the ZT coefficient lies in the strong interdependence of the physical parameters involved in electronic (S and σ, and κel) and phononic (κph) transport. Herein, we propose a new strategy of incorporating nanotwinned structures to decouple electronic and phononic transport. Combining the new concept of nanotwinned structures with the previously widely used nanocrystalline approach, the power factor of the nanotwin-nanocrystalline Si heterostructures is enhanced by 120% compared to that of bulk crystalline Si, while the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced to a level well below the amorphous limit, yielding a theoretical limit of 0.52 and 0.9 for ZT coefficient at room temperature and 1100 K, respectively. This value is almost two orders of magnitude larger than that for bulk Si and twice that for polycrystalline Si. Even for the experimentally obtained nanotwin-nanocrystalline heterostructures (e.g. grain size of 5 nm), the ZT coefficient can be as high as 0.26 at room temperature and 0.7 at 1100 K, which is the highest ZT value among all Si-based bulk nanostructures found thus far. Such substantial improvement stems from two aspects: (1) the improvement in the power factor is caused due to an increase in the Seebeck coefficient (degeneracy of the band valley) and the enhancement of electrical conductivity (the reduction of the effective band mass) and (2) the significant reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity is mainly caused due to the extremely strong phonon-grain boundary and phonon-twin boundary scattering. Our results suggest that nanotwinned structures are excellent building blocks for enhancing TE performance in diamond-like semiconductors, and our study provides a new strategy for the innovative development of other TE materials.

Abstract:The effect of interface scattering on the performance of disordered, nanocomposite thermoelectric materials is studied theoretically using effective medium theory and direct numerics. The interfacial electronic and phonon scattering properties which lead to an enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ are described. Generally, $ZT$ enhancement requires the interfacial electrical conductance to be within a range of values, and the thermal phonon conductance to be below a critical value. For the systems considered, these requirements on interface scattering for $ZT$ enhancement are expressed in terms of the bulk properties of the high-$ZT$ material, and the ratio of the constituent bulk $Z$ values.

Abstract:The past two decades have witnessed the rapid growth of thermoelectric (TE) research. Novel concepts and paradigms are described here that have emerged, targeting superior TE materials and higher TE performance. These superior aspects include band convergence, "phonon-glass electron-crystal", multiscale phonon scattering, resonant states, anharmonicity, etc. Based on these concepts, some new TE materials with distinct features have been identified, including solids with high band degeneracy, with cages in which atoms rattle, with nanostructures at various length scales, etc. In addition, the performance of classical materials has been improved remarkably. However, the figure of merit zT of most TE materials is still lower than 2.0, generally around 1.0, due to interrelated TE properties. In order to realize an "overall zT > 2.0," it is imperative that the interrelated properties are decoupled more thoroughly, or new degrees of freedom are added to the overall optimization problem. The electrical and thermal transport must be synergistically optimized. Here, a detailed discussion about the commonly adopted strategies to optimize individual TE properties is presented. Then, four main compromises between the TE properties are elaborated from the point of view of the underlying mechanisms and decoupling strategies. Finally, some representative systems of synergistic optimization are also presented, which can serve as references for other TE materials. In conclusion, some of the newest ideas for the future are discussed.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in recent studies of thermal and thermoelectric transport phenomena in nanostructures and low-dimensional systems. This article reviews several intriguing quantum and classical size effects on thermal and thermoelectric properties that have been predicted by theoretical calculations or observed in experiments. Attention is focused on the Casimir limit in phonon boundary scattering and the effect of phonon confinement on the lattice thermal conductivity of semiconductor nanowires (NWs) and nanomeshes; the effects of thickness, lateral size, and interface interaction on the lattice thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene; and the phonon-drag thermopower and quantum size effects on the thermoelectric power factor in semiconductor NWs. Further experimental and theoretical investigations are suggested for better understanding of some of these nanoscale transport phenomena.

Abstract:Tuning the electron and phonon transport properties of thermoelectric materials to partially decouple electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity is the core issue to improve the conversion efficiency. Herein, Bi2Te2.7Se0.3/SnS2 nanocomposites with a unique hetero-structure that the 2D atomically thin SnS2 nanosheets (2–15nm) homogeneously assembled on BTS grain boundaries have been successfully synthesized to explore the size-dependent electron and phonon regulating effects. The atomically thin Bi2Te2.7Se0.3/SnS2 interfaces allow for effective phonon scattering and decreased thermal conductivity, while the energy filtering effect increase the power factor, resulting an improved figure of merit (ZT). By controlling the thickness of the interfaces SnS2 layers, simultaneously optimized the electron transporting and phonon scattering properties has been achieved, a high ZT = 0.93 at 450K is obtained. The designed Bi2Te2.7Se0.3/SnS2 nanocomposites give us opportunities to systematically study the size-dependent electron tuning effect (energy filtering effect) and phonon scattering (classical size effect), which finally give rise to the enhancement of ZT.
Quantum transport simulations for the thermoelectric power factor in two dimensional nanocomposites

Abstract:Some of the most promising candidates for next generation thermoelectrics are nanocomposites due to their low thermal conductivities that result from phonon scattering on the boundaries of the various material phases. However, in order to maximize the figure of merit ZT, it is important to understand the impact of such features on the thermoelectric power factor. In this work we consider the effect that nanoinclusions and voids have on the electronic and thermoelectric coefficients of two dimensional geometries using the fully quantum mechanical Non Equilibrium Greens Function method. This method combines in a unified approach the details of geometry, electron phonon interactions, quantisation, tunnelling, and the ballistic to diffusive nature of transport. We show that as long as the barrier height is low nanoinclusions can have a positive impact on the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor is not severely impacted by a reduction in conductance. The power factor is also shown to be approximately independent of nanoinclusion and void density in the ballistic case. On the other hand, in the presence of phonon scattering voids degrade the power factor and their influence increases with density.

Abstract:Recent advances in n-type organic–inorganic thermoelectric nanocomposites (TENCs) based on carbon nanotubes and inorganic nanocrystals are reviewed by Lidong Chen, Guillermo C. Bazan. Ziqi Liang, and co-workers in article number 1800943. A variety of effective strategies for enhancing thermoelectric performance in n-type TENCs are highlighted. An outlook on further improvement is given, along with methods to enhance their ambient stability, towards the fabrication of flexible TE devices.

Abstract:Performance of thermoelectric materials and devices depends upon various features on different levels from microscopic to macroscopic scales. On the atomic scale, to find new multi-component compounds with complex electronic and crystal structures is a way to high-Z thermoelectric materials. On the nano-scale, quantum wells, wires and dots are considered to be the dawn for breaking the traditional barrier of ZT/spl sim/1 existing for several decades. From the point of view of microstructure, inhomogeneities in thermoelectric materials, such as interfaces/grain-boundaries and inclusions, have significant influences on their thermoelectric properties. On the macroscopic scale, the thermoelectric device functions depend on thermoelectric materials used for building the device and device configuration (such as multistage or segmented devices). This review briefly presents the state-of-the-art and perspectives in the multiscale understanding of thermoelectric materials and devices.

Abstract:Miniaturization of electronic devices aims at manufacturing ever smaller products, from mesoscopic to nanoscopic sizes. This trend is challenging because the increased levels of dissipated power demands a better understanding of heat transport in small volumes. A significant amount of the consumed energy is transformed into heat and dissipated to the environment. Thermoelectric materials offer the possibility to harness dissipated energy and make devices less energy-demanding. Heat-to-electricity conversion requires materials with a strongly suppressed thermal conductivity but still high electronic conduction. Nanowires can meet nicely these two requirements because enhanced phonon scattering at the surface and defects reduces the lattice thermal conductivity while electric conductivity is not deteriorated, leading to an overall remarkable thermoelectric efficiency. Therefore, nanowires are regarded as a promising route to achieving valuable thermoelectric materials at the nanoscale. In this paper, we present an overview of key experimental and theoretical results concerning the thermoelectric properties of nanowires. The focus of this review is put on the physical mechanisms by which the efficiency of nanowires can be improved. Phonon scattering at surfaces and interfaces, enhancement of the power factor by quantum effects and topological protection of electron states to prevent the degradation of electrical conductivity in nanowires are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent studies of thermal transport in nanoscaled semiconductors. Different from bulk materials, new physics and novel thermal properties arise in low dimensional nanostructures, such as the abnormal heat conduction, the size dependence of thermal conductivity, phonon boundary/edge scatterings. It is also demonstrated that phonons transport super-diffusively in low dimensional structures, in other words, Fourier's law is not applicable. Based on manipulating phonons, we also discuss envisioned applications of nanostructures in a broad area, ranging from thermoelectrics, heat dissipation to phononic devices.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials facilitate direct heat-to-electricity conversion. The performance of a TE material is characterised by its figure of merit zT (=S2 σT/κ) that depends on both electronic transport properties, i.e. the Seebeck coefficient S and the electrical conductivity σ, and on thermal transport properties, i.e. the thermal conductivity κ of a material. The intrinsically counter-correlated behaviour between electronic and thermal transport properties makes the enhancement of zT a very challenging task. In the past 10 years, the zTs in bulk TE materials have been significantly enhanced due to intensive exploratory efforts, the discovery of new physical phenomena and effects, and applications of advanced synthesis methods. In this review, we summarise the recent progress in bulk TE materials. After the introduction of fundamental principles of thermoelectricity, the recently achieved enhancements in the TE performance encompassing the use of electronic band structure engineering, lattice phonon engineering and nanostructure tailoring will be emphasised. Next, the highlights of typical TE materials will be presented, focusing especially on the great progress achieved during the past decade. Finally, new techniques and approaches developed to fabricate TE materials will be outlined and their impact on the performance and economic viability of large-scale TE applications will be considered. The progress made during the past dozen or so years provides great opportunities for the use of bulk TE materials in a much broader range of applications and bodes well for a more efficient utilisation of energy.

Abstract:Thermoelectrics is attractive as a green and sustainable way for harnessing waste heat and cooling applications. Designing high performance thermoelectrics involves navigating the complex interplay between electronic and heat transports. This fundamentally involves understanding the scattering physics of both electrons and phonons, as well as maximizing symmetry-breaking in entropy and electronic transports. In the last two decades, thermoelectrics have progressed in leaps and bounds thanks to parallel advancements in scientific technologies and physical understandings. Figure of merit zT of 2 and above have been consistently reported in various materials, especially Chalcogenides. In this review, we provide a broad picture of physically driven optimization strategies for thermoelectric materials, with emphasis on electronic transport aspect of inorganic materials. We also discuss and analyzes various newly coined metrics such as quality factors, electronics quality factor, electronic fitness function, weighted mobility, and Fermi surface complexity factor. More importantly, we look at the non-trivial interdependencies between various physical parameters even at a very fundamental level. Moving forward, we discuss the outlook for the potential of 3D printing and device oriented research in thermoelectrics. The intuition derived from this review will be useful not only to guide materials selection, but also research directions in the coming years.
