Abstract:An aromatic isocynide-substituted diiron complex 5 has been synthesized as amimic for the active site of Fe-only hydrogenases. Its structure has been fully characterised by X-ray crystallography. The 4-iodophenylisocyanide ligands in 5 are in the basal positions and are nearly parallel to each other, with pi-pi stacking interactions. Four isomeric geometries of complex 5 have been optimized by DFT calculations, and the electrochemical properties of 5 have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry in the absence and presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (HOTs). Analysis of the cyclic voltammetric curve indicates that the reduction event at about -1.43 V is electrocatalytically active to proton reduction. Abstract:A model catalysis reaction for a C 2 + N 1 type aziridination and imination of p -tolyl azide with cis -cyclooctene in toluene is reported. Applying 10 equivalents related to the azide, cis -cyclooctene is consumed within 24 h. A reaction temperature of 90°C is chosen for solubility and activity reasons. A variety of Fe(II) N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes ( 1 - 5 ) are tested as additives. All show promising formation of aziridine and its imine isomer in the benchmark reaction. However, similar activities are also achieved by a metal-free control reaction together with a similar product distribution of A (aziridine), B (imine) and C (aziridine), so that the metal compounds cannot be considered as catalysts, but they do indeed influence the isomeric distribution of the reaction. To contextualize the conceivable product isomers, density functional theory calculations were performed (B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) to determine the minimum ground state energies. As expected, these are nearly identical. However, the backbone modification of the open-chain NHC ligated iron(II) complex ( 5 ) allows switching of the predominant reaction, favoring imine ( B ) as main product.

Theoretical study of the mechanism of oxoiron(IV) formation from H2O2 and a nonheme iron(II) complex: O-O cleavage involving proton-coupled electron transfer

Abstract:It has recently been shown that the nonheme oxoiron(IV) species supported by the 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane ligand (TMC) can be generated in near-quantitative yield by reacting [Fe(II)(TMC)(OTf)(2)] with a stoichiometric amount of H(2)O(2) in CH(3)CN in the presence of 2,6-lutidine (Li, F.; England, J.; Que, L., Jr. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 2134-2135). This finding has major implications for O-O bond cleavage events in both Fenton chemistry and nonheme iron enzymes. To understand the mechanism of this process, especially the intimate details of the O-O bond cleavage step, a series of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and analyses have been carried out. Two distinct reaction paths (A and B) were identified. Path A consists of two principal steps: (1) coordination of H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) and (2) a combination of partial homolytic O-O bond cleavage and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). The latter combination renders the rate-limiting O-O cleavage effectively a heterolytic process. Path B proceeds via a simultaneous homolytic O-O bond cleavage of H(2)O(2) and Fe-O bond formation. This is followed by H abstraction from the resultant Fe(III)-OH species by an •OH radical. Calculations suggest that path B is plausible in the absence of base. However, once 2,6-lutidine is added to the reacting system, the reaction barrier is lowered and more importantly the mechanistic path switches to path A, where 2,6-lutidine plays an essential role as an acid-base catalyst in a manner similar to how the distal histidine or glutamate residue assists in compound I formation in heme peroxidases. The reaction was found to proceed predominantly on the quintet spin state surface, and a transition to the triplet state, the experimentally known ground state for the TMC-oxoiron(IV) species, occurs in the last stage of the oxoiron(IV) formation process.
A Density Functional Theory Analysis of the C-H Activation Reactivity of Iron(IV)-Oxo complexes with 'O' Substituted Tetramethyl-cyclam Macrocycle

Abstract:In this article, we present a meticulous computational study to foresee the effect of an oxygen-rich macrocycle on the reactivity of C-H activation. For this study, a widely studied nonheme Fe(IV)O molecule with a TMC (1,4,8,11-tetramethyl 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) macrocycle that is equatorially attached to four nitrogen atoms (designated as N4) and acetonitrile as an axial ligand has been taken into account. For the goal of hetero-substitution, the step-by-step replacement of the N4 framework by O atoms, i.e., N4, N3O1, N2O2, N1O3, and O4 systems, has been considered, and dihydroanthracene (DHA) has been used as the substrate. In order to neutralise the system and prevent the self-interaction error in DFT, counterions called triflates have also been included in the calculations. Studying the energetics of these C-H bond activation reactions and the potential energy surfaces mapped therefore reveals that the initial hydrogen abstraction, which is the rate-determining step, follows the two-state reactivity (TSR) patterns, which means that the originally excited quintet state falls lower in the transition state and product. The reaction follows the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, as indicated by the spin density studies. The results revealed a fascinating reactivity order, in which the reactivity increases with the enrichment of the oxygen atom in the equatorial position, namely, the order follows N4 < N3O1 < N2O2 < N1O3 < O4. The impact of oxygen substitution on quantum mechanical tunneling and H/D kinetic isotope effect studies have also been investigated. When analysing the causes of this reactivity pattern, a number of variables have been identified, including the reactant like transition structure, spin density distribution, the distortion energy, and the energies of the electron acceptor orbital, i.e., the energy of LUMO (σ*z2), which validate the obtained outcome. Our results also show very good agreement with earlier combined experimental and theoretical studies considering TMC and TMCO-type complexes. The DFT predictions reported here will undoubtedly encourage experimental research in this biomimetic field, as they provide an alternative with higher reactivity in which heteroatoms can be substituted for traditional nitrogen atoms.

Abstract:The oxidation of substrates via the cleavage of thermodynamically strong C-H bonds is an essential part of mammalian metabolism. These reactions are predominantly carried out by enzymes that produce high-valent metal-oxido species, which are directly responsible for cleaving the C-H bonds. While much is known about the identity of these transient intermediates, the mechanistic factors that enable metal-oxido species to accomplish such difficult reactions are still incomplete. For synthetic metal-oxido species, C-H bond cleavage is often mechanistically described as synchronous, proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). However, data have emerged that suggest that the basicity of the M-oxido unit is the key determinant in achieving enzymatic function, thus requiring alternative mechanisms whereby proton transfer (PT) has a more dominant role than electron transfer (ET). To bridge this knowledge gap, the reactivity of a monomeric MnIV-oxido complex with a series of external substrates was studied, resulting in a spread of over 104 in their second-order rate constants that tracked with the acidity of the C-H bonds. Mechanisms that included either synchronous PCET or rate-limiting PT, followed by ET, did not explain our results, which led to a proposed PCET mechanism with asynchronous transition states that are dominated by PT. To support this premise, we report a semiempirical free energy analysis that can predict the relative contributions of PT and ET for a given set of substrates. These findings underscore why the basicity of M-oxido units needs to be considered in C-H functionalization.
A General Iron‐Catalyzed Decarboxylative Oxygenation of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids

Abstract:We report an iron-catalyzed decarboxylative C(sp3)–O bond-forming reaction under mild, base-free conditions with visible light irradiation. The transformation uses readily available and structurally diverse carboxylic acids, iron photocatalyst, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives as oxygenation reagents. The process exhibits a broad scope in acids possessing a wide range of stereoelectronic properties and functional groups. The developed reaction was applied to late-stage oxygenation of a series of bio-active molecules. The reaction leverages the ability of iron complexes to generate carbon-centered radicals directly from carboxylic acids by photoinduced carboxylate-to-iron charge transfer. Kinetic, electrochemical, EPR, UV-Vis, HRMS and DFT studies revealed that TEMPO has a triple role in the reaction: as an oxygenation reagent, an oxidant to turn over the Fe-catalyst, and an internal base for the carboxylic acid deprotonation. The obtained TEMPO adducts represent versatile synthetic intermediates that were further engaged in C–C and C–heteroatom bond-forming reactions using commercial organo-photocatalysts and nucleophilic reagents

Abstract:The activation of dioxygen at haem and non-haem metal centres, and subsequent functionalization of unactivated C‒H bonds, has been a focal point of much research. In iron-mediated oxidation reactions, O 2 binding at an iron(II) centre is often accompanied by an oxidation of the iron centre. Here we demonstrate dioxygen activation by sodium tetraphenylborate and protons in the presence of an iron(II) complex to form a reactive radical species, whereby the iron oxidation state remains unaltered in the presence of a highly oxidizing phenoxyl radical and O 2 . This complex, containing an unusual iron(II)-phenoxyl radical motif, represents an elusive example of a spectroscopically characterized oxygen-derived iron(II)-reactive intermediate during chemical and biological dioxygen activation at haem and non-haem iron active centres. The present report opens up strategies for the stabilization of a phenoxyl radical cofactor, with its full oxidizing capabilities, to act as an independent redox centre next to an iron(II) site during substrate oxidation reactions.

The influence of processing corn grain on glucose metabolism in ewes.

Abstract:Glucose metabolism was studied in ewes fed 800 g chopped alfalfa hay (H) or 400 g alfalfa hay and 400 g corn grain given in whole (HWC), ground (HGC) or extruded (HEC) form. Daily intake of metabolisable energy and crude protein were: 5.8 MJ, 109 g; 9.0 MJ, 84 g; 9.5 MJ, 84 g and 8.5 MJ, 88 g in H, HWC, HGC and HEC, respectively. In situ ruminal degradability ranked whole, ground, and extruded corn in ascending order. Ruminal pH and concentration of acetic acid were lower and of propionic acid higher (P less than 0.05) in HEC than in HGC and HWC groups. Plasma level of glucose (P less than 0.10), insulin (P less than 0.05), and the ratio of insulin to non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) (P less than 0.01) were higher in HEC than in other groups. Glucose irreversible loss (GILR) and entry rate (GER), recycling (GRec) and reentry (GRee) were determined by double isotope dilution procedure. GER, but not GILR, was higher in HWC than in H and HGC (6.98 mg/min/kg BW0.75 vs 3.97 and 4.24 mg/min/kg BW0.75, respectively; P less than 0.05) and than in HEC (4.84 mg/min/kg BW0.75; P less than 0.10). GRec and GRee were higher in HWC than in the other treatments. Grinding or extruding the grain increased ruminal degradability and decreased glucose entry rate.
Oxidatively-induced C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bond formation at a tucked-in iron(iii) complex

Abstract:Carbon–carbon (C–C) bond formation is a cornerstone of synthetic chemistry, relying on routes such as transition-metal mediated cross-coupling for the introduction of new carbon-based functionality. For {[M] n + –C} (M = metal) structural units, studies that offer well-defined relationships between metal oxidation state, hydrocarbon strain, and {[M] n + –C} bond thermochemistry are thus informative, providing a means to reliably access new product classes. Here, we show that one-electron oxidation of the iron tucked-in complex [(η 6 -C 5 Me 4 CH 2 )Fe(d n ppe)] (d n ppe = 1,2-bis(di- n -propylphosphino)ethane) results in C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bond formation giving unique {Fe 2 } dimers. Freeze-quenched CW X-band EPR spectroscopy allowed for spectroscopic identification of the reactive [(η 6 -C 5 Me 4 CH 2 )Fe(d n ppe)] + intermediate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a primarily Fe-centered radical and a weak {[Fe]–C} bond (BDE [Fe]–C = 24.5 kcal mol −1 , c.f. BDE C–C(ethane) = 90 kcal mol −1 ). For comparison, a structurally analogous Fe( III ) methyl complex was prepared, [Cp*Fe(d n ppe)(CH 3 )] + (Cp* = C 5 Me 5 − ), where C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) coupling was not observed, consistent with a larger calculated BDE [Fe]–C value of 47.8 kcal mol −1 . These data are analogized to the simple hydrocarbons ethane and cyclopropane, where a strain-induced BDE C–C decrease of 33 kcal mol −1 is witnessed on cyclization.

Iron‐Catalyzed Water Oxidation: O–O Bond Formation Via Intramolecular Oxo–Oxo Interaction

Abstract:AbstractHerein, we report the importance of structure regulation on the O−O bond formation process in binuclear iron catalysts. Three complexes, [Fe2(μ‐O)(OH2)2(TPA)2]4+(1), [Fe2(μ‐O)(OH2)2(6‐HPA)]4+(2) and [Fe2(μ‐O)(OH2)2(BPMAN)]4+(3), have been designed as electrocatalysts for water oxidation in 0.1 M NaHCO3solution (pH 8.4). We found that1and2are molecular catalysts and that O−O bond formation proceeds via oxo–oxo coupling rather than by the water nucleophilic attack (WNA) pathway. In contrast, complex3displays negligible catalytic activity. DFT calculations suggested that theantitosynisomerization of the two high‐valent Fe=O moieties in these catalysts takes place via the axial rotation of one Fe=O unit around the Fe‐O‐Fe center. This is followed by the O−O bond formation via an oxo–oxo coupling pathway at the FeIVFeIVstate or via oxo–oxyl coupling pathway at the FeIVFeVstate. Importantly, the rigid BPMAN ligand in complex3limits theantitosynisomerization and axial rotation of the Fe=O moiety, which accounts for the negligible catalytic activity.

Abstract:Laser-ablated iron atoms react with CO and NO during condensation in excess argon to produce a series of iron carbonyl nitrosyl complexes. The Fe(CO)(NO), Fe(CO)2(NO), Fe(CO)(NO)2, and Fe(CO)2(NO)2 complexes are formed as reaction products during sample deposition and further annealing, which leads to dominance for the saturated Fe(CO)2(NO)2 complex. The Fe(CO)(NO) complex isomerizes to Fe(CO)(η2-NO) on visible photolysis and to the isocyanate species OFeNCO on ultraviolet irradiation. The observed absorption bands were identified by isotopic substitution (13C16O, 15N16O, 15N18O, and mixtures) and reproduced by DFT calculations of vibrational fundamentals. The FeCO subunit observed here in different nitrosyl environments appears to distort and stiffen with an increase in positive charge on iron, which may relate to the deformability of the FeCO subunit in heme proteins. The nature of bonding and reaction mechanism are discussed.
Proximity Effects on the Reactivity of a Nonheme Iron (IV) Oxo Complex in C‐H Oxidation

Abstract:Precise control of substrate positioning and orientation (its proximity to the reactive unit) is often invoked to rationalize the superior enzymatic reaction rates and selectivities when compared to synthetic models. Artificial nonheme iron (IV) oxo (Fe(IV)=O) complexes react with C(sp3)-H bonds via a biomimetic Hydrogen Atom Transfer/Hydroxyl Rebound mechanism, but rates, site-selectivity and even hydroxyl rebound efficiency (ligand rebound versus substrate radical diffusion) are smaller than in oxygenases. Herein, we quantitatively analyze how substrate binding modulates nonheme Fe(IV)=O reactivity by comparing rates and outcomes of C-H oxidation by a pair of Fe(IV)=O complexes that share the same first coordination sphere but only one contains a crown ether receptor that recognizes the substrate. Substrate binding makes the reaction intramolecular, exhibiting Michaelis-Menten kinetics and increased reaction rates. In addition, C-H oxidation occurs with high site selectivity for remote sites. Analysis of Effective Molarity reveals that the system operates at its maximal theoretical capability for the oxidation of these remote sites. Remarkably, substrate positioning also affects Hydroxyl Rebound, whose efficiency increases only on the sites placed in proximity by recognition. Overall, these observations provide evidence that supramolecular control of substrate positioning can effectively modulate the reactivity of oxygenases and its models.

Abstract:A diversified reactivity of the mononuclear bis(amidinato)iron(II) complex [Fe(MesC(NPri)(2))(2)] (1) toward oxidizing reagents has been disclosed. The bis(amidinato)iron(II) complex was synthesized from the reaction of [Fe(Mes)(2)](2) with 4 equiv of diisopropyl carbodiimide in good yield. Treatment of 1 with 1 equiv of benzyl chloride gives the high-spin ferric complex [FeCl(MesC(NPri)(2))(2)] (2), with 0.25 equiv of S-8 affords the sulfur-insertion product [Fe(MesC(NPri)((NPrS)-S-i))(2)] (3), with 1 equiv of 3,5-dimethylphenyl azide or phenyl azide yields nitrene-insertion product [Fe(MesC(NPri)(2))((PrNC)-N-i(Mes)N(Pr-i)NAr)] (Ar = 3,5-dimethylphenyl, 4a; phenyl, 4b), and with 1 equiv of oxo-transfer reagent, trimethylamine oxide or 2,6-dichloropyridine oxide, generates the oxo-bridged diferric complex [(MesC(NPri)(2))(2)FeOFe(MesC(NPri)(2))(2)] (5). Complexes 1-3, 4a, and 5 have been characterized by H-1 NMR, UV-vis, IR, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The formations of these unusual sulfur- and nitrene-insertion products 3, 4a, and 4b, can be explained by the sequential redox reaction between 1 and the oxidants, followed by migratory insertion steps.

Abstract:S=2 oxoiron(IV) species act as reactive intermediates in the catalytic cycle of nonheme iron oxygenases. The few available synthetic S =2 Fe IV ═O complexes known to date are often limited to trigonal bipyramidal and very rarely to octahedral geometries. Herein we describe the generation and characterization of an S =2 pseudotetrahedral Fe IV ═O complex 2 supported by the sterically demanding 1,4,7‐tri‐ tert ‐butyl‐1,4,7‐triazacyclononane ligand. 2 is a very potent oxidant in hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactions with large non‐classical deuterium kinetic isotope effects, suggesting hydrogen tunneling contributions. For sterically encumbered substrates, direct HAA is impeded and an alternative oxidative asynchronous proton‐coupled electron transfer mechanism prevails, which is unique within the nonheme oxoiron community. The high reactivity and the similar spectroscopic parameters make 2 one of the best electronic and functional models for a biological oxoiron(IV) intermediate of taurine dioxygenase (TauD‐ J ).

Tailoring C-H amination activity via modification of the triazole-derived carbene ligand

Abstract:Two new C,O-bidentate chelating triazolylidene-phenolate ligands were synthesized that feature a diisopropylphenyl (dipp) and an adamantyl (Ad) substituent respectively on the triazole scaffold. Subsequent metalation afforded iron(II) complexes [Fe(C^O)2] that are active catalysts for the intramolecular C-H amination of organic azides. When compared to the parent complex containing a triazolylidene with a mesityl substituent (Mes) the increased steric bulk led to slightly lower activity (TOFmax = 23 h-1vs. 30 h-1), however selectivity towards pyrrolidine formation increases from 92% up to >99%. Kinetic studies indicate that the mechanism is similar in all three complexes and includes a half-order dependence in [Fe(C^O)2], congruent with the involvement of a dimetallic catalyst resting state within this catalyst class. Structural analysis suggests that enhanced bulkiness disfavors N2 loss and nitrene formation, yet shields the nitrene from intermolecular processes and thus favors intramolecular nitrene insertion into the C-H bond. This model rationalizes the high selectivity and the lower reaction rate observed with dipp and with Ad substituents on the ligand.
Dioxygen Reduction and Bioinspired Oxidations by Non-heme Iron(II)-α-Hydroxy Acid Complexes

Abstract:Aerobic organisms involve dioxygen-activating iron enzymes to perform various metabolically relevant chemical transformations. Among these enzymes, mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes reductively activate dioxygen to catalyze diverse biological oxidations, including oxygenation of C-H and C═C bonds and C-C bond cleavage with amazing selectivity. Several non-heme enzymes utilize organic cofactors as electron sources for dioxygen reduction, leading to the generation of iron-oxygen intermediates that act as active oxidants in the catalytic cycle. These unique enzymatic reactions influence the design of small molecule synthetic compounds to emulate enzyme functions and to develop bioinspired catalysts for performing selective oxidation of organic substrates with dioxygen. Selective electron transfer during dioxygen reduction on iron centers of synthetic models by a sacrificial reductant requires appropriate design strategies. Taking lessons from the role of enzyme-cofactor complexes in the selective electron transfer process, our group utilized ternary iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes supported by polydentate ligands for dioxygen reduction and bioinspired oxidations. This Account focuses on the role of coordinated sacrificial reductants in the selective electron transfer for dioxygen reduction by iron complexes and highlights the versatility of iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes in affecting dioxygen-dependent oxidation/oxygenation reactions. The iron(II)-coordinated α-hydroxy acid anions undergo two-electron oxidative decarboxylation concomitant with the generation of reactive iron-oxygen oxidants. A nucleophilic iron(II)-hydroperoxo species was intercepted in the decarboxylation pathway. In the presence of a Lewis acid, the O-O bond of the nucleophilic oxidant is heterolytically cleaved to generate an electrophilic iron(IV)-oxo-hydroxo oxidant. Most importantly, the oxidants generated with or without Lewis acid can carry out cis-dihydroxylation of alkenes. Furthermore, the electrophilic iron-oxygen oxidant selectively hydroxylates strong C-H bonds. Another electrophilic iron(IV)-oxo oxidant, generated from the iron(II)-α-hydroxy acid complexes in the presence of a protic acid, carries out C-H bond halogenation by using a halide anion.Thus, different metal-oxygen intermediates could be generated from dioxygen using a single reductant, and the reactivity of the ternary complexes can be tuned using external additives (Lewis/protic acid). The catalytic potential of the iron(II)-α-hydroxy complexes in performing O2-dependent oxygenations has been demonstrated. Different factors that govern the reactivity of iron-oxygen oxidants from ternary iron(II) complexes are presented. The versatile reactivity of the oxidants provides useful insights into developing catalytic methods for the selective incorporation of oxidized functionalities under environmentally benign conditions using aerial oxygen as the terminal oxidant.

Abstract:We show that highly efficient acetaldehyde-to-acetic acid oxidation is achieved in a diluted FeCl3-acetonitrile solution (5-100 mu M), which proceeds rather rapidly and follows the enzymatic-like Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Interestingly, by adjusting the concentration of FeCl3, we are able to accelerate or shut down the oxidation process conveniently. Based on the catalytic results, spectroscopic evidences and successive DFT calculations, a reactant-initiated, putative mononuclear non-heme iron-oxygen complex, [FeCl(MeCN)(4)(O)](2+), is proposed as the active oxidizing species to conduct the room temperature reaction with relatively high TOF values (similar to 1.2 s(-1)). Finally, the putative iron-oxygen complexes are employed to the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under ambient conditions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
